Mr Nolan said that rather than making a decision himself, each class could vote on what they thought was worth the investment. “Everything on the list is stuff that the kids came up with,” he said. “I expected it to be wacky stuff but it was all cutting-edge.” He set up a voting system online using blockchain, which is the premise behind bitcoin. Mr Nolan said it distributed secure pieces of information to different computers rather than relying on centralised data storage. “That data belongs to someone else and they can delete it at any time,” he said. “This technology means that can’t happen.” A 3D printer was in the lead, ahead of virtual reality, drones and robotics.

An online search for the world’s best school led a Singapore father to bring his son to Dandenong North. Now eight-year-old Seth is not only excelling in his studies at Wooranna Park Primary School, he’s teaching other students. Principal Ray Trotter said people remembered only a small portion of what they saw and heard. “We remember 95 per cent of what we teach,” he said. “You need to activate for it to stick. “If I tell you that you know things that other people want to know, it builds your self-esteem.” He said teaching coding to other students many older than him - was building Seth’s confidence and social skills. “And to introduce all of our children to the digital world is absolutely crucial now,” Mr Trotter said. “What Kieran is doing is way out there.” Teacher Kieran Nolan started his working life in network engineering, which took him into schools about 10 years ago. Then Wooranna Park was looking for “a computer geek”. His role really took off after he provided a gifted student with books in CISCO - networking - to learn from at home. “The other kids wanted to do it, too,” Mr Nolan said. “They started building virtual networks and then physical networks.” He’d provided them with an old switch and server. They wanted to add a router to the mix but there was no budget for it. Mr Nolan had a family friend who needed help with a virus on his computer. “I had no time but I told him I had some really smart kids,” he said. “They got his data back and got paid $100 for it and bought a router. “It’s sort of been organic from there.” Andrew Kwan is a US-based software developer who mined online currency bitcoin in the early days. He’s been to 200 schools across America, Mr Nolan said, and someone from the Blockchain Centre suggested he check out Wooranna Park. About eight months ago he did just that and told Mr Nolan it was the best school he’d ever seen. He gifted 21 bitcoins, worth about $30,000 at the time, to further boost the school’s technology offering. When the Journal visited, the school was conducting an immutable vote on how to spend some

Rock climbing walls to replace level crossings

Dandenong RSL

By Casey Neill An off-leash dog park, a rock-climbing wall and picnic tables could fill the space created when Noble Park’s level crossings are removed. But river red gums weren’t on the list of recommendations from an expert panel that was enlisted to shape the open space formed by the Level Crossing Removal Project. Their report released on Tuesday 22 August said the Noble Park open space would mainly be linear parkland dedicated to grass, trees and a walking and cycling path. The path will run 17 kilometres between Caulfield and the Yarraman Trail. Removing the Heatherton, Chandler and Corrigan road crossings will also create three recreation spaces, at Ross Reserve, Heatherton Road and Chandler Road. The panel wants to build on the world-class skate facilities at Ross Reserve through outdoor gym equipment, a mini rock climbing wall, picnic tables, a playground and table tennis. The panel recommended a dedicated off-leash dog park area near Ross Reserve. In response to 92 per cent of community survey respondents saying they planned to use the shared path for recreation and exercise, the panel recommended exercise pit-stops, rest areas, bike repair stands and drink fountains alongside it. The panel said planting new river red gums was an important discussion topic. The Journal reported in August last year that the community was reeling following shock news that dozens of decades-old river red gums and several other trees on Mons Parade, between Heatherton Road and Briggs Crescent, would be removed.

Progress on the Noble Park level crossing removals. “The trees are prone to dropping branches, hence the panel’s recommendation to plant similar species such as manna gums,” the panel report said. The panel also recommended that an art curator be brought on, but existing art work underneath Noble Park Station and plaza should be retained. The State Government will now consider the expert panel’s recommendations in conjunction with Level Crossing Removal Authority as work progresses towards final designs which are set to be released later this year.

It’s the colour that cares for daffodil school fundraiser Dandenong Primary School raised cash for cancer research while building community connectedness. Principal Daniel Riley said children were invited to dress in yellow on Thursday 24 August for a donation to the Cancer Council’s Daffodil Day fund-raising effort. The school raised $440. “Most importantly for us it was great community-building event,” Mr Riley said. “We also held a morning tea for parents and staff. “We threw the staff room door open and everyone brought a plate to share. “It was a great way for parents to engage with teachers in a fun, relaxed way.”

20 years ago 1 September 1997 Designing women Talented dressmaker Mrs Pat McDonald, 69, has been plying her trade for 50 years in Dandenong. Two articles in the Journal have prompted Mrs McDonald to turn back the clock. One was of Mrs Vera Edwards in the bouffant pink tulle ball gown with she wore many years ago in the Dandenong Town Hall when

she took out the coveted Belle Of Belles title. The other was about the 93rd birthday of Mrs Marie Prendergast. “I helped make Vera’s gown which we literally all worked on at the time,” she said. “We worked at the shop in Vanity Fair and Mrs Prendergast, who owned the shop, was my boss. “Mr Stan Prendergast built Vanity Court and Mrs Prendergast’s boutique and dress making salon was opposite the town hall at the front of the arcade in Lonsdale Street. “That is why Vera literally stitched into her gown, had such a short distances to go to face the judges. “Mrs Prendergast used to design and cut out all her gowns with, their eye catching grace and style.” Over the decades Mrs McDonald made hundreds of debutante gowns, evening gowns, cocktail gowns, wedding gowns, and

bridesmaid gowns. Her bridal album is a mannequin parade of fashions through the eras that reveals “nothing in the fashion world is really new under the sun”. She made gowns for many of Dandenong’s elite, including the wives of MPs, doctors and pharmacists and mayoresses. Mrs McDonald did her training at the Emily McPherson College of Domestic Economy and started making dresses for dolls at the age of 10.

Chipping away Freemason history What’s in a Name delves into the fascinating stories and personalities behind some of the city’s bestknown street names and locations. This week the Journal looks at the new Freemasons Lane. Freemasons Lane came to be through the Revitalising Central Dandenong project. It runs off Mason Street, near the Masonic Hall. Greater Dandenong councillors gave the green light to its name in February after receiving positive community feedback on the idea, including a 117-signature petition. It recognises the 1923-built Masonic Hall’s community, social and architectural significance and strong links to Dandenong’s history. Freemasons Victoria Grand Master Don Reynolds said markers that acknowledged the past in a changing urban environment provided future generations with an opportunity to gain knowledge of a local area’s history, adding to the quality of the social environment.

WHAT’S IN A

NAME The 1919 Dandenong township plan shows a cottage on Lot 12, the site where the Masonic Hall is now built. No documentation could be located on the date of its demolition. The history of the Masonic Lodge started in 1876 when the Lodge of Sincerity was consecrated. The first meeting to consider forming the Lodge of Free and Acceptable Masons was held on 3 September 1876 but the lodge was closed in 1881.

It wasn’t until 1896 that re-opening the lodge was considered. Members from the original lodge joined this new Lodge of Sincerity and brought with them regalia, furniture and money. It was consecrated on 24 August 1896 and meetings were held monthly at the lodge room of the Mechanics Institute at the Shire Offices. In December 1907 members decided to set aside part of the membership dues and initiation fees to build a Masonic Temple. In the 1920s the lodge was struggling for space due to a large increase in memberships and on 7 September 1922 the lodge held a meeting to discuss the possibility of building. A contract was entered with Brother G Snell to have plans and specifications drawn up for the cost of £2800. Tenders were called and a building contract was signed with Brother N A Taylor for the total sum of £2530. The building was completed in 1923, with all

furniture and fittings for the supper and lodge room donated by members. The lodge held its first meeting in the new building on 22 December 1923. On 16 August 1924 a ceremony of dedication was held and the foundation stone was unveiled. In 1991 the Dandenong Masonic Temple as well as those in Springvale, Mordialloc and Chelsea closed and amalgamated to use a new building in Keysborough. In 1992 the building was used by the Recycle Workshop and by September 1996, Mick and Rosa Valenti had acquired the building. In December 1996 they leased the building to the Spanish Christian Church for three years with Guillermo Esquivell as the Senior Minister. The building is now vacant. Greater Dandenong Council will transform the space into an art gallery. - Information courtesy Greater Dandenong Heritage Study

Cafe culture takes a hit

In Brief Feedback call for bypass

By Casey Neill Keysborough hasn’t got the services to cater for all of its residents, says one frustrated local. Amelia Morrison used to live in Dandenong North and moved to Somerfield a year ago. She said there was a lack of infrastructure, with no cafes other than Parkmore and more land opening at the Dandenong Bypass and Chandler Road intersection. “There’s really nothing here,” she said. “Greater Dandenong Council don’t seem to be interested. “This development didn’t happen overnight. “I just feel the council didn’t do enough.” Ms Morrison said supermarkets were “flat out” and she had to travel to Dandenong, Springvale or further to get a coffee.

“It’s just the inconvenience for people,” she said. She said the council focused on Springvale and “making ridiculously ugly arches” and on Dandenong, “making that pretty”. “They charge people the earth for their rates and do not give them anything for it,” she said. In a statement, Greater Dandenong Council said it had an obligation to the entire municipality and each year carefully deliberated on how it spent operational and capital funds. “There has been substantial investment in that area and the success of investment, both public and private sector, is evidenced by the rapid growth of the area and the significant value of properties.” The statement said the council would continue to invest in infrastructure in the area and, where necessary and appropriate, do so in partnership

and collaboration with other public sector agencies or private sector entities. “The City of Greater Dandenong has a strong history of advocating for additional infrastructure in the Keysborough South area and this has been further evidenced by council, together with key community stakeholders, lobbying for accessible education in the area.” Intrapac Property chief operating officer Max Shifman said an additional cafe for the Somerfield estate and local area was a great idea and one that his company would support. “The Keysborough South Shopping Centre offers an Italian-style cafe in addition to a Woolworths supermarket and specialty retailers including a medical centre and pharmacy, all of which are much needed and important amenities to the local residents,” he said.

In the running marathon team looks for members A Dandenong charity isn’t just walking the walk to support refugees and asylum seekers. The Friends of Refugees team will run to raise cash to help people find a better future. The runners are hoping to raise $50,000 for their participation in the Melbourne Marathon which will be held on Sunday 15 October. The team is looking for more members as well as sponsors. Participants can choose from 3 kilometre, 5.7km, 10km, 21.1km and 42.195km courses at www.melbournemarathon.com.au and should select Friends of Refugees as their team to lace up their runners alongside the charity crew. Visit friendsofrefugeesmelbournemarathon2017.gofundraise.com.au to donate. Friends of Refugees was founded in early 2013 to fill service gaps for people seeking asylum and refugees. It has become a central source of first-line relief for people seeking asylum in Melbourne’s South-East. The group provides food, education support, job training, resettlement programs and a drop-in centre as a welcoming and safe environment for people in desperate need.

By Casey Neill Girl Guides at Dandenong West Primary School need help to continue their Victorian-first project. Seven girls made their Girl Guide Promise at the school on Thursday 17 August to become one of the 10 million Girl Guides throughout the world. The program has been running for just over two years with support from Girl Guides Victoria and school principal Bev Hansen. “The school was the first school to trial Guiding in Schools as a lunchtime program,” Jeanette Cox said. But the Girl Guides Victoria funding will stop at the end of the year. “So we are looking for sponsorship to maintain

Lunch money for Girl Guides the program into 2018 and beyond,” Ms Cox said. She said 14 girls from Grades 4, 5 and 6 met at lunchtime on Thursdays and learnt leadership skills, communication skills and team work. “They are also involved with outdoor activities and service projects in our community,” she said. Projects have this year included Clean Up Australia Day, Tree Day and a Reconciliation Week ceremony at Greater Dandenong Council. “We had seven girls go on an overnight camp last term which was run by Girl Guides Victoria,” Ms Cox said. “This was an amazing opportunity for our girls as four of them had never been away from home and many had never seen the Australian bush. “They also met other Girl Guides and formed very close bonds with each other.”

Waste scheme defended

In Brief Hospital attack video sought

By Casey Neill Greater Dandenong’s recycling waste is on track for a productive future. The council’s engineering services director Julie Reid spoke to the Journal following a report from ABC program Four Corners highlighting huge stockpiles of glass intended for recycling. “Polytrade was a big focus in that report. Polytrade was under a fair amount of scrutiny in that report,” she said. The company has the council’s recycling contract. “We just considered whether Polytrade had moved on since that time,” Ms Reid said. “A lot has happened in the past few months. “They introduced some advanced technology to sort glass. “That certainly is in our Ordish Road municipal recycling facility at the moment. “There was a flood of glass in the market and they weren’t getting as much for it, I believe. “The new technology does something with the glass that allows it to be more palatable to overseas markets.” Ms Reid said the council was watching the recycling space all the time so did not hold a special investigation following the program. “The recycled market has been through lots of fluctuations,” she said.

Police are appealing for video footage from the public following an assault on a Pakenham man outside Dandenong Hospital. Greater Dandenong CIU investigators are looking into the circumstances of an affray outside the David Street hospital about 3.30pm on Tuesday 22 August. A 47-year-old man suffered minor injuries during the incident and was released from hospital after observation. Police declined to speak further on what exactly took place. Investigators are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident or has CCTV or mobile phone footage to come forward. A Monash Health spokeswoman said the incident occurred outside the hospital, and police were handling the matter. Call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 with any information.

Pair in robbery spree Greater Dandenong engineering services director Julie Reid. 172012 “We watch it really carefully to make sure we’re still getting good value for money. “Our contract does have a requirement for any of our contractors to meet industry standards.” She said that people placing unrecyclable materials into their recycling bins did create

problems for recyclers. “We will always have a proportion that goes to landfill because it’s not recyclable,” she said. “There’s always going to be people who do the wrong thing, or who don’t quite understand what they need to do.”

Students back their school upgrade Lyndale Secondary College’s rebuild drew attention from Education Minister James Merlino. He visited the Dandenong North school with Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams on Wednesday 16 August. The State Government has so far invested $13 million to rebuild Lyndale. Work is well underway on the school’s new STEM centre and performing arts space, with more to come. Student leaders told Mr Merlino how important the upgrade was to them and their education. Mr Merlino and Ms Williams also stopped

by Dandenong’s Emerson School to discuss the school’s plans for the future. They met principal John Mooney to learn about Emerson’s programs for students with intellectual processing difficulties. Emerson School is the largest specialist school of its type in Victoria and provides a wide range of educational, therapeutic and developmental programs for students. “Whether it be a mainstream setting or a tailored educational environment, our priority is to create opportunity for every student, and our schools are at the heart of that,” Ms Williams said.

Police are searching for two men behind robberies in Dandenong, Rowville and Wheelers Hill back in May. Two men drove a stolen vehicle to a Wheelers Hill pizza shop about 8.20pm on Thursday 4 May. They were armed with a metal pole and kitchen knife and stole the cash register. About 8.30pm, the two men drove to a Dandenong milk bar on David Street, produced weapons and stole cigarette lighters and tobacco pouches. Police said that about 8.40pm the duo drove to a service station on Stud Road, Rowville, and forced their way through the front doors armed with a metal pole and a box cutter. They stole several items from the counter while a service station attendant locked himself in the staff office. They were wearing dark clothing and one wore a balaclava and the other a bandana. They are described as about 180 to 185 centimetres tall and of thin build.

Greater Dandenong’s five Community Hubs will share a $10,000 boost. Intrapac Property presented the grant to Community Hubs Australia (CHA) at Dandenong West Primary School on Monday 21 August. The cash will go towards child-minding and playgroups so migrant and refugee women can study. The Greater Dandenong hubs are at the Dandenong South, Dandenong, Dandenong West, Springvale Rise and St Anthony’s primary schools and engaged 1600 families last year. CHA chief operating officer Luke Atkin said the whole community hub model was predicated on partnerships. “Every benefit that comes of these partnerships really does make a difference to the community,” he said. He said supporting migrant women as they transitioned to life in Australia helped to embed them into their new community.

Intrapac Property chief operating officer Max Shifman said the developers Somerfield in Keysborough was an ethnically diverse community much like Dandenong West Primary, with residents from about 36 nationalities. He said he was a first generation Australian migrant, and he hoped the grant would help migrant women to participate in everything that makes Australia such a great place to live. Four women who use the hub thanked Mr Shifman, telling him that the money would enable them to learn while their children had fun and prepared for kindergarten. Dandenong West Primary principal Bev Hansen said the school’s hub opened in about 2014. One third of her students are refugees. She said schools were often the first point of contact for new arrivals to Australia. Through its community hub, Dandenong West can connect parents to other services and reduce social isolation. Visit www.communityhubs.org.au for more information.

BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST In Brief Auto supply chain moves on

Laiba and Zoann from Noble Park Secondary College with South East Water graduate engineer Marzieh Lotfollahi at South East Water’s Frankston headquarters as part of the Women in the Pipeline work experience program.

Girls get into the flow of water career options By Casey Neill Noble Park students are partnering with South East Water to guide a steady stream of girls into STEM careers. The Women in the Pipeline program is a first for the water authority and is encouraging female students at Noble Park Secondary College to consider jobs in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM). Two students from the college completed a work experience program. “The girls thoroughly enjoyed their time there and will reflect on it as a positive experience to help them make decisions towards their future careers,” Noble Park Secondary College careers and VET co-ordinator Sandra Vaina said. She said South East Water’s Shellie Watkins was one of the speakers who were invited to the school’s Future Pathways Expo. “The students were totally captivated by her honesty and sincerity about her journey towards her current career,” she said.

South East Water education officer Mandy McDonald said a group of VCE chemistry students toured the Mount Martha Water Recycling Plant. She said more than 40 per cent of the organisation’s employees worked in engineering, science and technical roles. “STEM skills are crucial to our ability to deliver safe, reliable water and wastewater services,” she said. “South East Water’s Women in the Pipeline program enables us to take traditionally male careers into secondary schools and promote them to female students.” Ms McDonald said two thirds of children aged nine to 11 who were asked to draw a scientist drew a man. “We need to remove the bias and stereotyping, and show that it’s fine to see a woman with steel cap boots, a hard hat, overalls and a high-vis vest taking water samples at water treatment plant, and providing analytical data to our teams,” she said. “We want to demonstrate that the water in-

dustry provides excellent career opportunities for females as well as males. “Noble Park Secondary College is similarly committed to getting girls excited about roles that may be traditionally thought of as male, so we naturally wanted to work with them.” Ms McDonald hopes the students will develop a deeper understanding about particular STEM careers and appreciate that opportunities in these fields are inclusive to all, irrespective of gender. “It’s also about thinking anything is possible. Career pathways are rarely linear so if you really want a career in something, consider both traditional and non-traditional ways to get there,” she said. “It’s ultimately about widening our talent pool to ensure that we are securing the absolute best talent to work in our industry. “We want to employ high performing people - regardless of gender or culture - who are truly passionate about our vision of healthy water for life so that we can deliver the best outcomes for our customers and community.”

There’ll be a morning of case study presentations followed by an afternoon of workshops on future trends in manufacturing. Registration starts at 8.30am and the event concludes at 5.30pm following a networking function. Industry and Employment Minister Wade Noonan will provide the opening address. There’ll be question and answer panel sessions with these speakers. South East Melbourne Manufacturers Alliance (SEMMA) executive officer Adrian Boden will launch the afternoon sessions, which will feature speakers from CSIRO, Swinburne, Industry Capability Network (Victoria) and more. Connecting with job seekers Dandenong companies took part in a fair to connect jobseekers with job opportunities. Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams launched the Melbourne South-East Jobs Fair in Caulfield on Friday 17 August. Among the 47 companies involved were 10 from Dandenong - Adecco, Mission Australia, Skilinvest, Skills Plus/AMES, The Bridge Employment, Ventura Bus, Bar Crusher Boats, Chromaflo Technologies, Extrusion Profiles Australia and Jayco. About 4100 jobseekers, including auto industry workers, attended to hear about 1900 job vacancies. They got to speak to exhibitors, including Victoria Police, Department of Human Services and the Level Crossing Removal Authority to learn about local job and training opportunities. Participants also received information and attended sessions on resume writing and developing strategies for finding a job that suits their skills. “Dandenong is proudly one of the nation’s biggest manufacturing hubs. “There are jobs out there.”

SPORT Stingrays set for showdown

Last years grand finalists Mordialloc and HSD will face off in Round 8. 166486

Picture: ROB CAREW

DDCA season closing in fast after fixtures released By Nick Creely The Dandenong District Cricket Association has announced the turf fixtures for 2017/18 with cricket season just a month away from commencement. Much like the 2016/17 Turf 1 season, there will be 11 rounds of the home-and-away season. In total, there will be eight two-dayers and three one-dayers in a similar home-and-away format to last year. Reigning premiers Mordialloc will tackle North Dandenong in the opening round, while new Turf 1 club St Mary’s has a tough task against grand finalists HSD at Carroll Reserve. In the other opening round matches, Dingley hosts Berwick, Cranbourne travels to face Dandenong West, Hallam Kalora Park hosts Springvale South and Buckley Ridges faces Narre Warren at Park Oval. Last year’s grand finalists don’t play each other un-

til the new year in what will be a fascinating contest. In Turf 2, Parkmore Pirates and St Brigid’s/ St Louis will clash in what will be the marquee game of the opening round, while Narre South get the chance to wrong the rights of last year’s disappointment when they travel to face Lyndale at Barry Powell Reserve. For the full turf fixtures from Turf 1 to Turf 7, log on to My Cricket. The synthetic fixtures are set to be released in the coming days or weeks. In other news, the Dandenong District Cricket Umpires Association is again putting out a call for new umpires for the coming summer season. Umpires Association President Rory Ludowyk said it’s a great way for players who may have recently retired to stay involved in the game. And dads who enjoy umpiring their son’s junior games might want to step up and officiate at a higher level.

The association offers training and ongoing guidance for new members, and there is good remuneration paid in all turf grades. “Our Umpires Association has great social facilities based at Shepley Oval in Dandenong, and it’s a really welcoming group,” Ludowyk said. Most matches are on Saturday afternoons with some Sunday fixtures as well. Own transport is a must as the competition covers the cities of Casey and Greater Dandenong and also spreads into Kingston and Cardinia. Although a senior competition, a Working with Children’s card is also required for the role. The Dandenong District Cricket Umpires Association is holding its annual Rules for Rookies Night at Shepley Oval on Thursday 6 September starting at 7pm. For further information contact secretary Graham Allen on 0402 881 042 or email details to secretaryddcua@gmail.com.

The Dandenong Stingrays are bouncing into September and raring to get cracking into what is set to be a fascinating TAC Cup finals series. With the ’Rays finishing the home-andaway season in third spot after rounding out the regular season matches against Geelong Falcons on Sunday, they will meet the Eastern Ranges in what will be a truly tantalizing elimination final to be played on Sunday 10 September at MARS Stadium in Ballarat. Back in Round 8, the Stingrays comfortably knocked off the Ranges by 63 points in their only clash this season, with Mitch Cotter dominating through the middle and Tom De Koning and Jai Nanscawen bagging four majors. However, Eastern is glittered with talent, with such kids as Jaidyn Stephenson, Adam Cerra, Sam Hayes, Jackson Ross and Dylan Moore making for a formidable line-up. But the ’Rays are no shortage of stars either with AFL-bound talent Luke DaviesUniacke, Aiden Bonar and Hunter Clark in pristine form, while the likes of Mason De Wit, Nanscawen, Will Hamill, Angus Paterson and Bailey Williams are all entering the most important month of the season in pristine form. Their co-skipper Oscar Clavarino, who has already enjoyed stunning success with Haileybury College and Vic Country this season, has confidence that his side is peaking at the right time. “It’s great to see the boys come together at this time of the season and continue to play some good footy,” he said. “It reassures us that what we’ve done preseason and during the early stages of the season is really paying off. “However the hard work is yet to come.” Clavarino - who patrols the backline has had plenty of opportunity to watch how his side moves the ball, and identify the areas that make the ’Rays so strong. “I think the most impressive part of the team’s play in the last month or so is our ability to get the game on our terms and play to our strengths,” he said. “With a lot of running players we’ve become a great handball receiving team and have found a way to use that as a weapon to create attack off the half back line.”

Big dance just one step away By Nick Creely JOURNAL FOOTBALL REVIEW SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 2 - QUALIFYING FINAL Keysborough is inching one step closer to an inspired first premiership in the Southern Football League after dispatching Caulfield to the tune of 28-points at Meade Reserve on Saturday, 13.7(85) to 8.9(57). Coming in as warm favorites, with a host of stars in top touch, the Burra wasted no time in stamping their very powerful authority, putting the game away with an absolute clinical first quarter. After the Bears kicked the game’s opening major, only minutes into the contest, a bag of Timmy Werner goals within just two minutes of eachother got the ball rolling, with the Burras slamming on another four unanswered goals to hold a lead of 32-points at quarter time. With young Sandringham Dragon star Jacob Bakes (two goals), Jake D’Atri and Daniel Morland helping fill the void left by champion midfielder Ryan Goodes (jaw), the Bears couldn’t close in on the deficit in the second and third quarters, with the Burra kicking seven goals to four to further stamp its dominance, before taking the foot off the pedal in a lackluster final term. But it was the brilliant Werner who once again turned heads, pulling out yet another brilliant best afield performance in a win even more impressive considering Chris Bryan missed for personal reasons. Burras coach Matt Ferguson was thrilled with the brilliant first quarter from his side, but said the focus is now well and truly on their next opponents, a red-hot Chelsea Heights who have tasted defeat just three times this season. “We really built ourselves up for a strong start, we have been the best first-quarter side this year so we focused on doing what had worked throughout the year,” he said. “We are confident our best footy is good

Keysborough marched through to a second semi-final showdown against Chelsea Heights with an electric win over Caulfield on Saturday. enough but we respect Chelsea Heights strengths which are many,” Ferguson said. “We go in as underdogs but will give it a red hot crack.” DIVISION 3 - SECOND SEMI FINAL Finals always bring out the best in teams and Endeavour Hills may just be this year’s true contender in a wide open premiership race. Extraordinarily, the Eagles pulled off one of

their greatest wins in recent memory, knocking off dominant minor premier Hallam in a stunning performance that now sees them advance to the grand final, 7.5(47) to 9.9(63). The hot-starting Hawks banged through four first quarter goals to lead by nine-points at quarter time, before a brilliant team defensive unit held the competition’s most powerful attacking side to just 23-points in the final three quarters to

seal a huge momentum booster. Midfielder Daniel Batson was instrumental in yet another win for the Eagles, while Manny Peresso did all he could to revive a Hallam side that must now bounce back in next week’s preliminary final. The Doveton Eagles and Ashwood played off in the other semi final on Sunday, after the Journal went to print.

Golden boy’s got his boots on By Nick Creely If one thing is for certain, it’s that Dandenong Thunder striker Brandon Barnes is going to strive in the NPL’s top tier in 2018. There is perhaps no striker currently not at an A-League club who is having a more profound impact on the soccer landscape of the south-east. After an astonishing 40 goals in 25 matches last season, Barnes took out the NPL2 Victoria best-and-fairest last year as well as the Golden Boot as the competition’s leading scorer and the Player’s Player award in recognition of his fine work by opponents and teammates. And if all goes to script - and it should - he is likely to walk away with the same awards this season. With talk continually ramping up about the south-east obtaining an A-League licence, Barnes’ form continues to go to another level. He has scored another 35 goals this season making it 75 in his last 53 games - more than 30 goals ahead of the next best striker in any of the three NPL divisions. Despite perhaps not being as ruthless as previous seasons, Barnes’ consistency shone brightest with just nine scoreless matches. But the scary part of it all for opposition goalkeepers and defenders in the NPL is that Barnes believes he can only get better. “I look back on this season, and I’m probably a bit harsh on myself, but I’m not really happy with how I’ve done - I’ve had a bit of a target that I’ve kept to myself this year and I’m a little bit off at the minute,” Barnes told the Journal in a recent interview. “I feel like my form has not dropped, but I haven’t got to where I’d like it to be - I’ve obviously had a baby recently so I’ve had a few things on my mind there. “But I’m obviously the top goal scorer by about 10 goals even though I’m not in the best form which probably shows a lot, so I’m still doing what I can for the boys.”

Brandon Barnes (10) celebrates one of his many goals this season. 171304 Although his main focus is lifting the Thunder to glory in the club’s exciting push into the top tier in 2018, Barnes himself admits he would do anything to earn a professional contract if the south-east does indeed earn a licence to play in the A-League.

Picture: ROB CAREW

“If they tick all the criteria and get that licence, I’ll be banging on their door and try and be a part of it,” he said. “Around this area, football is constantly getting bigger and bigger - that’s why I reckon the A-League licence could sway towards this area,

just because of how many clubs are in the area - it would bring a lot of youth and a lot positive things to the area.” The Thunder - which is the 2017 NPL2 East champion - is set to put rest up in this off-season as it gears up for a tilt with the big boys.

The $10,000 grant will go towards the purchasing of food and food vouchers for some of the most vulnerable members of the community. “At the time there was a lot of migration from different parts of Europe so it was felt there was a need to start something to help along their settlement in the community,” said society president Joe Rechichi. “They probably didn’t think it would be something that would be going in the long term but, 55 years later, we’re still here. “There’s a group of around 20 of us, all volunteers, and we do our very best to serve the community. “It’s a tough job but I have a dedicated team of volunteers and we make a little bit of a difference.”
