MEMBERS from the Foster and District Probus Club - together with those from Horsham Combined Probus Club, Mount Waverly Central Ladies Probus Club, Stawell Gold Reef Probus Club and Syndal Combined Probus Club - recently returned from a Canada and Alaska trip and cruise.

A total of 20 dedicated members including Sue and Glen from Trade Travel enjoyed a two-week tour of the Canadian Rockies followed with a seven-day cruise aboard the Royal Caribbean ‘Explorer of the Seas’ visiting the southern Alaskan peninsula.

The scenery was magnificent, the lodgings and food were excellent and the company was sociable and pleasant.

RECENTLY 51 hardy members from the Traralgon Combined Probus Club travelled through beautiful countryside admiring the stunning late autumn colours on the various trees to the lovely little town of Dargo. For many in the group, this was the first time travelling to this part of Gippsland, an exciting experience.

Dargo is one of Victoria’s most remote communities nestling in the foothills of the Dargo high plains, and has a population of about 150.

It is the entry point for the Alpine National Park the Avon Wilderness Park and the Mitchell River National Park; it is also well known for the Walnut Festival.

Arriving in Dargo, the group spent some time having a quick look around before heading to the historic old pub which was built in 1898 for a very enjoyable lunch, after lunch members had more time to take in the sights of what is a very pretty little town.

A must was a visit to an old museum where members spent some time looking at the many photos, machinery and tools from a bygone era. They were then given a most interesting talk on the local area and the history on the surrounding high country.

It was a tired and well satisfied group that returned to Traralgon later that evening.

They’re as friendly as it gets “YOU couldn’t find a friendlier club.” That’s the assessement of long-serving member of the Combined Probus Club of Sandown, Shirley Constantine.

The club recently celebrated two very special events - Joan and Norm Carroll’s 70th wedding anniversary and, shortly after, Joan’s 90th birthday.

The club is coming up for its quarter of a century milestone next year, and Shirley has been a member for all but one of those 25 years.

The Carrolls were married on 21 June, 1947 at All Saints Church in Clayton.

They met when they both worked at Kayser Hosiery. Norm was a mechanic and Joan’s job was to dry to the freshly dyed stockings on hot iron 'legs’.

Shirley worked as a research assistant to a professor of Australian history at Monash University, until ill-health forced her to retire.

Their first date was a movie in the city on Christmas Eve. Joan was 15 and Norm was 17.

She saw an advertisement in the local press advertising Probus and joined with a friend.

They lived in Clayton before moving to Springvale 62 years ago, where they brought up their five children.

“When I had to stay away a few months, the thing that got me going back again was that the welfare officer was so good.

They kept ringing me up to see if I needed anything. She was so caring I made up my mind I was definitely going back."

And the secret to a happy marriage?

“How have we stuck together so long?"

Joan calls out to Norm.

Shirley and her friend decided that because they were active in other organisations they would “sit back and do nothing" in an official capacity with Probus.

“He said keep each other warm," she said, laughing.

Before the end of the year the vicepresident had asked Shirley to be his VP the next year.

The couple joined Probus in September 2003.

She has been on the committee ever since.

“I guess we consider each other’s feelings. We share. We just get along."

Shirley likes the social aspect of Probus and the varied activities and trips.

Sandown broke away from the Noble Park Probus Club, to help alleviate a lengthy waiting list.

“We’ve had some great times over the years. It’s an opportunity to get together and have some fun.

“I’d say if you are thinking about doing something in your spare time, try Probus.

If you do try it, then try all the activities.

Give it a go. Before you know if you are caught up in the swing of it."

“We thought it would be company and we had friends who were in it. We thoroughly enjoy it. We used to go on all the trips and loved all their outings. People are marvellous, very friendly."

The Combined Probus Club of Sandown meets at 10am on the second Monday of the month at the Noble Park Football Club.

THE members of the Drouin Lions Club are now busy organising their 17th annual Gippsland Garden and Home Expo to be held at Lardner Park Events site on 14-15 October.

This year promises to be an even more exciting event. The three huge pavilions promise to be packed full with some magnificent displays ranging from the smallest of flowers to large trees from 20 nurseries as well as over 60 home-related products such as spas, beds, furniture, furnishing, decor, building ideas, etc.

The surrounding outside area will have 12 caterers, entertainment, childrens activites, and another 60 great exhibits which include more plants, outdoor furniture, garden features, mowers, caravans, hot houses, tools, and a myriad of other products and ideas.

Tino Carnevale and other experts will be giving great gardening advice up on stage each day. All this adds up to a great day out for $10 for adults with children under 16 free and all the money raised will be donated back to good causes in the community.

MEMBERS of the Rosebud Ladies Probus Club recently celebrated the 100th birthday of long-time member Nancy Bullas.

Sadly, 10 members also attended the funeral of another member Roberta Hedger.

Both ladies had held the position of club president.

The Rosebud Ladies have been busy of late, having an outing to the Eagle at Dromana.

They travelled to the Cottage by the Sea by ferry and had two Christmas in July celebrations, one at the Bridge Hotel in Hurstbridge and the others at Steeples in Mornington.

Inland from Sydney, it gets historic IN MARCH, 39 Probians from Monash Central enjoyed a great tour of the historic and beautiful area just inland from Sydney.

After a very early start and a smooth flight to Sydney, they visited the colonial homesteads Hambledon Cottage, Elizabeth Farm, Parramatta Experimental Farm and Rouse Hill House and Farm. The quality of the convict constructions was very good, although parts of the properties looked more like renovators’ delights!

The Retreat at Wisemans Ferry Resort was beautifully situated next to verdant green gardens and a golf course on the banks of the Hawkesbury River. From there it was off to see the Great North Road, which was hewn into the mountainside by convicts using only manpower and gunpowder.

into the sandstone could still be clearly seen, as could their sturdy buttresses and retaining walls. After viewing the hard work of others, there was sustenance at the Settlers Arms Inn, built in 1836 on the banks of the Hawkesbury.

More sustenance and a little alcohol were soon at hand at Tizzana Winery, established by the amazing Dr Thomas Fiaschi in 1889. Ebenezer Church, the oldest existing church in Australia was also very interesting.

These charming backwaters are really living history! In the evening, The Bellbird Bush Band entertained at a Convict Dinner.

In something of an inside job, the president elect and his wife were plucked from the crowd as best-dressed!

The day in the Blue Mountains was just beautiful. After being regaled with a

few honeymoon stories, which are not to be repeated off-tour, came a visit to the beautiful Mt Tomah Cool Climate Botanic Gardens.

On a clear day you could almost see forever. At Katoomba, the majesty of the mountains and the depths of the Jamison Valley were seen. Rides ensued on the scenic railway, cableway and skyway before more photos in front of the iconic Three Sisters. Another 50 coachloads of tourists reinforced the feeling that this is truly a World Heritage area.

On Thursday the tour turned a little pearshaped. The group boarded The Riverboat Postman on the Hawkesbury at the same time that the tail of Cyclone Debbie came visiting.

All those up north were severely impacted by Debbie, while the visitors

merely had to view the riverside through two inches of rain.

The bus sensed the mood, and often refused to get into gear. Mature members who also have trouble getting into gear in the morning sympathised with the bus. The wonderful driver Les remained remarkably cool, and the tour was completed without incident.

On the last day, came lunch at The Fiddler, truly Australia’s largest and most extended historic pub. Then came the news that that Probus was an acronym for ‘Prostate Removed Other Bits Under Scrutiny’!

The blokes agreed that all were in the same boat to a greater or lesser degree!

The best antidote is to keep on travelling and enjoying ourselves, and that was certainly the story of the Hawkesbury Tour.

Four nights at chalet TATURA Probus Club members had an enjoyable four-night stay at The Chalet in Bright, meeting up with Probus club members from the Pascoe Vale, Robinvale and Traralgon clubs.

Each day they set off on the chalet bus to visit interesting places around the area - and bumped into a few old miners at a park in Harrietville.

The thrill of a racing revival

BY STEPHEN BELL, GENERAL MANAGER OF MORNINGTON RACING CLUB THE Mornington Racing Club was born on 3 August, 1947.

Sir Reginald Ansett was the driving force in reviving racing at the picturesque Mornington course and chaired the first race day after a six-year break while the racecourse was used to aid in the war efforts. Ansett was adamant that racing needed to resume in order to create a sense of excitement and celebration in the town and recruited a group of shareholders to bring racing back to Mornington. The Mornington Post front page was headed “Mornington Racing Club’s Great Revival”.

2017, racing dignitaries, historians and members of Mornington Racing Club will join to commemorate the 70th anniversary as the premier racing and events location on the Peninsula. Be sure to secure your place at this prestigious event and book your seat today at mrc.racing.com or call 5975 3310.

It will be 70 years since the great R.M. Sweeping views across Japan Armchair Travel Kathy Rivett FLYING into Tokyo I happened to glance out the window of the plane, and to my surprise there was the tip of Mt Fuji looming above the bank of fluffy clouds.

I knew then that this tour would live up to everything it offered as Mt Fuji is a relatively shy mountain and seeing it even before we landed was a sign of great things to come.

Japan is an island that offers so many wonderful different experiences that no other country can.

Choosing autumn to visit is fabulous for touring, as the hills are covered in beautiful orange, red and yellow trees and the weather isn’t too hot. From the colour of the autumn leaves and the magnificent shrines, to the history of Kyoto and the ancient castles, there is something for everyone to capture with their camera.

We start our tour in Tokyo where we journey through this amazing city taking in highlights such as the Emperor’s Palace Gardens, the huge Tsukiji Fish Market, Asakusa, the old town of Tokyo, ancient shrines, and then wonder at the city from the Tokyo Skytree before experiencing the vibrant action-filled Shinjuku’s Robot Restaurant.

The tour takes in Kegon waterfall, one of Japan’s three greatest waterfalls, located in the natural beauty of the Nikko National Park, where the colours subtly change with the altitude.

Japan is an island that offers many wonderful experiences.

Heading towards the stunning snowcapped Japanese Alps, you will travel to the Jigokudani Monkey Park where you will witness these amazing animals bathing in natural hot springs, before heading to the Matsumoto Castle, a striking black and white structure with blazing red leaves all around.

Takayama, a beautifully preserved old town that was cut off from the rest of Japan and allowed to develop its own culture is next on our tour. While there, we visit the local Takayama Jinya, the former government house from the 1600s and the Hida No Sato folk village, an open air museum with houses from the Edo period (1603-1867).

The following day we head to the

Omi-Cho Market which was established about the middle of the 18th century, and the stunning Kenrokuen gardens, one of Japan’s “Three Most Beautiful Gardens”.

We then visit the restored Kanazawa Castle and conclude our day at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art. We learn just how amazing the Japanese gardens are as we stop at the very traditional Tokugawa-en gardens in Nagoya, and the Shirotori Gardens. We stop at the Atsuta Shrine, which dates back almost 2000 years before heading to beautiful Kyoto.

During our time in Kyoto, we visit World Heritage sites including Nijo Castle, the beautiful Fushimi Inari Shrine and walk under thousands of Vermillion tori gates

before journeying to the Arashiyama district.

Here we can view the great example of autumn colours in the surrounding hills and notice the large display of locals dressed in traditional Japanese dress.

From Kyoto we head to Nara for the day to visit the world’s largest wooden building, Todaiji Temple, Japan’s largest sitting Buddha statue, and Nara’s most celebrated shrine, Kasuga Taisha, where we wander through Nara Park to encounter the large population of tame deer living there.

We then head to Kawaguchiko Maples Corridor where we view the amazing Mt Fuji before heading up to the 5th station to take in the breath-taking panorama from 2300 metres above sea level. Later in the day, we enjoy a cruise across Lake Ashinoko accompanied by the views of Mt Fuji.

From here we head back to Tokyo via the ancient capital of Kamakura, where we will visit the giant bronze statue of Buddha before taking in the stunning autumn foliage in the Rikugien Gardens.

Before heading back to Australia, we have the opportunity to cross to the large artificial island of Odaiba for free time to visit the high tech shopping precinct, restaurants and entertainment complexes.

After taking in all the highlights, tastes and experiences accompanied by the autumn brilliance of this beautiful country, we head off to the airport for our journey home with a suitcase full of wonderful memories!

ON Friday 14 July, Wheelers Hill Probus members and their partners celebrated the club’s 30th anniversary.

They were joined by the mayor of the City of Monash, Rebecca Paterson, president of the Rotary Club of Glen Waverley Louis Jashan and his wife Elisabeth and Leon Ross, president of the Mulgrave Country Club).

The club commenced operation on 10 July 1987 with 35 members. The first meeting was held at the Mulgrave Country Club, at which venue the club has continued to meet for the last 30 years.

Highlights from the function included: An address from Robert Maslen, the Rotary

Club of Glen Waverley president when the Probus Club commenced, and a life member of the Wheelers Hill Probus Club.

· An address from Peter Jeffreys, a foundation member of the club.

· Presentation by Rotary President Louis Jashan of a 30-year certificate to the club and 30-year pins to two of the remaining foundation members, John Douglas and Peter Jeffreys.

· An address from the mayor, Rebecca Paterson.

There's gold in them thar hills IT IS certain that young Ned Kelly never thought of himself as a marketing icon, but that’s what he has turned out to be for the Victorian North East.

He seemed to have been near almost every town up that way, or robbed a bank there or shot at something else somewhere else. There are approximately a dozen points all claiming special relationships with the outlaw.

Bright, where Waverley Women’s Probus Club members stayed during a recent visit, seems to be the centre of his activity and he features in the local information centre.

The other major distinction of the area is that 55 gold dredges dug up every valley in their search for the elusive golden metal.

Hundreds of thousands of ounces here and more hundreds in the next valley.

Apart from several very deep holes filled with water, there was only one remaining dredge at El Dorado. What a sight, an enormous corrugated galvanised iron shed filled with rusty cables, buckets, electric motors and structural steel beams rusting away into the future.

Of course the reason to stay at Bright is the autumn foliage - the claret, yellow, brown and gold of the deciduous exotic trees that are such a feature of this milder mountainous region of valleys.

Mount Buffalo with its magnificent lookouts across the valleys, the enormous boulders and the famous and almost forgotten no longer operating Mount Buffalo Chalet. It is undergoing major repairs but no-one else appears willing to try and make a profit, apparently because the cost of heating and electricity is astronomical.

What a waste of an iconic structure.

Waverley club members were guests of Murray and Wendy at the Hume Weir.

Beechworth with its golden past and its memories of Ned is very picturesque at this time of the year when the sun shines and of course it has its museum, devoted mainly to the exploits of Burke of the disastrous Burke and Wills expedition.

He had played a major part in policing the town before setting out on that expedition. One cannot visit the town without at least investigating the famous bakery, another marvel of marketing, with branches now in other cities around the state. The crowds and service was excellent, as usual.

Another port of call was the Bonegilla migrant camp on the banks of the Hume reservoir. This was a really massive

settlement in its day, with reportedly over five per cent of Australia’s population in some way related to the 300,000 migrants that came here immediately after the war. Most had a few months to get some understanding of the new land they had come to live in. It is a place full of stories and memories.

The last day on the tour of the North East was mainly concerned with the visit to hosts Wendy and Murray at their holiday home on the bank of the Hume reservoir.

It was a very fitting finale with good food, good company and beautiful sunny day among the claret grape leaves about to moult.

Strategy on grass IN A matter of less than 10 years, golf croquet has developed a following in the Probus community in the southern suburbs and Mornington Peninsula.

Several clubs have developed their own enthusiastic groups that usually play on a set day each month.

Golf croquet is a form of the game that has developed a huge following in recent years, because a beginner can gain an ability to understand the form and basic rules in just a few games.

Played in groups of two, three or four players, the game uses mallets and coloured balls to run the latter through a series of hoops.

It also has a strong appeal to people whose physical abilities no longer enable them to play sports such as golf or lawn bowls as croquet involves gentle walking over flat lawns, but at the same time requires a player to engage in some ‘strategic thinking’.

Frankston Croquet Club has hosted an

annual tournament for Probians for several years and the next scheduled tournament will be held on Sunday 29 October at that club.

Each group will play two games in the morning and one in the afternoon and the club will offer a delicious home-cooked lunch.

Players with limited experience are welcome, or even come as a spectator to find out more about croquet. A range of croquet mallets are available at the club, and flat footwear is essential.

Daylesford Probus turns 30 THE Probus Club of Daylesford recently celebrated its 30th birthday at the Daylesford Bowling Club.

Some 65 members and invited guests enjoyed a varied program, which included an outline of the history of the club and live music by Ricky Lee. The club history, written by Susan Priest, was handed to club president Lois Voterakis.

The cutting of the birthday cake was performed by two honorary members, Myrna and Arthur Brereton.

Also present was one of the club’s two life members, Ian Seeley.

Bendigo’s insight

to glamour EDITH Head is recognised as the most significant costumer designer in the history of cinema.

Over 50 years, she forged a successful career in Hollywood applying a diplomatic approach and an astute skill for disguising apparent physical ‘flaws’ and accentuating the ‘assets’ of those she dressed. First at Paramount Pictures and then Universal Studios, Head designed costumes for close to 1000 films starring many of Hollywood’s brightest stars including Dorothy Lamour, Shirley Temple, Bob Hope and Gloria Swanson.

In recognition of her talent, Head received 27 nominations and won eight Academy Awards - the most awards won by a woman.

While she was not known for the flamboyance that defined the work of other costume designers of her time, Head’s virtuosity and dedication to her craft cannot be denied.

Throughout her career, she designed everything from classic tailored suits, to period costumes, evening gowns and dazzling performance costumes all with a focus, not only on aesthetics, but the power of the costume to define the character who wore it.

costumes she designed for Hollywood, Head’s personal wardrobe was notably demure, consisting primarily of clothes in black, white and beige. This restricted palette ensured that when dressing the stars she would simply fade into the background so the star could be the focus. Despite her conservative style, at the height of her career, Head built a popular and approachable personal brand offering shrewd fashion advice to everyday woman through TV appearances, in advice columns and, a best-selling book titled The dress doctor.

The exhibition, The Costume Designer: Edith Head and Hollywood at the Bendigo Art Gallery honors the life and work of this award-winning costume designer, showcasing more than 70 costumes designed by Head between the 1930s and the 1960s.

These costumes, worn by Shirley Temple, Gloria Swanson, Veronica Lake, Olivia de Havilland, Hedy Lamarr, Fred Astaire and Yul Brynner, to name a few, are gleaned from the archives of Paramount Pictures, The Collection of Motion Picture Costume Design and other private collections. Films highlights include: The Ten Commandments, Samson and Delilah, The Emperor Waltz, Sunset Boulevard, Vertigo and The Heiress.

Rare honours in double win ON 6 June, 2017, District Governor of Rotary District 9800, Neville John and assistant District Governor Colin Styles attended the Rotary Club of Essendon luncheon and presented Jack Honson with a Double Sapphire recognition as well as a Royce Abbey Award for 50 Years of Rotary and service to the community and for having a 100 per cent attendance record.

A golden badge was specially made for Jack.

President Maria Kouppas said Jack was renowned for his hard work and a willingness to assist whenever asked.

Jack was the only member in the club’s history to achieve a 50-year perfect attendance record.

David Abbey wrote Jack a letter thanking him for the valuable contribution and for his attitude of service above self.

On 6 June, 1967, past president Ian Muir inducted Jack into the club. Past president Harry Winbush had nominated Jack.

Jack Gock Honson was born in Suva, Fiji Islands, to Ching Hoo Gock Honson and Low Sook Yee on 29 April, 1937.

After completing his primary schooling at the Suva Chinese Primary school and commencing secondary at Marist Brothers High School, Jack came to Australia in 1954 to boarding school to complete his secondary education at All Saints College in Bathurst, NSW, and Trinity Grammar in Sydney.

He then commence an architectural degree firstly at the University of NSW then at RMIT and finishing his architectural degree at Melbourne University in 1965.

After graduating, Harry Winbush, head of architecture at RMIT, approached Jack to be his associate with his firm. They designed the Essendon Ten Pin Bowls, Essendon and Glenroy Libraries.

In 1967, Harry Winbush nominated Jack to the Essendon Rotary Club.

In 1971, Jack ventured out to start his own practice at 126 Pascoe Vale Road, Moonee Ponds.

Brunswick Council appointed Jack to design its five-storey municipal offices, including library, council chambers and engineering department.

Assistant District Governor Colin Styles, Jack Honson, District Governor Neville John and club president Maria Kouppas.

Essendon Council approach Jack to design the Ascot Vale Leisure Centre, the Essendon Community Centre and the Ascot Vale Library.

Rotary was good to Jack and has given him 43 jobs, especially Ian Muir of the Good Guys, who asked him to design their head office for 225 staff. Jack also designed showroom stores at Dandenong, Ballarat and Bendigo. Besides doing all these projects, he also designed medical and dental centres, pharmacies, restaurants, shops, clubs, bowling and pokies venues and houses.

All of his work was challenging, inspiring and interesting.

Jack was nominated as the 48th president of the Rotary Club of Essendon with 83 members in his 1982/83 year.

During his year he designed and members of the club built the sound shell and presented it to the Essendon Council for public use in Queens Park.

Victoria had a disastrous bushfire (Ash Wednesday). The Essendon Rotary Club was asked by the Scouts and Guides to restore the art burnt out building at Riddell Creek. This original project was donated by the club to the Scouts and Guides.

Jack approached District Governor Graeme Allison to contribute $13,000 while the club contributed $7000.

In March, 1983, the Essendon Rotary Club had a busy time organising the Rotary District 9800 Conference in Adelaide 1200 members from the 9800 district attended.

Since Jack’s retirement eight years ago (in 2009) he still attends his weekly Rotary meeting. He now joins the Manningham Elderly Chinese Citizen club at Bulleen where he does his weekly Yin Ji Wo (a form of Tai Chi), table tennis and line dancing.

He also joined the U3A Pine Centre at East Doncaster where he does strength training, learning Mandarin, ballroom dancing and another lot of line dancing.

History revealed in trip

They're running with zithers IN July, Angie Smales from the Birregurra music group Running With Zithers entertained Colac Otway Probus Club members with an interesting talk and some zither music.

She brought along several zithers for members to try and promised that even

without the ability to read music they would be able to just play, hitting the musical floor running so to speak.

Although somewhat skeptical, many members tried it and were delighted to find themselves playing simple, but well known, melodies.

A popular day tour by community clubs to Creswick was for the Werribee Probus Club their first venture since their recent 30th anniversary and brought back enlightening memories to some members of previous visits.

The first port of call was the Creswick Woollen Mills where they now specialise in garments made from alpaca fibre.

A tour of the mill demonstrated the techniques of weaving the soft fibres into wonderful products available at reasonable prices.

It is listed to be one of the oldest mills still operating in Australia and was originally founded by a Polish escapee of World War II, Paul Ryowzy (and his family), commencing production in 1947.

In later years he made the switch to using alpaca wool for quality garments and other products which include fire retardant blankets which played a role in the safety procedures of the Black Friday fires.

An enjoyable lunch and a stroll around the town was another feature, and to one member a visit to the local Catholic church was put on the agenda to photograph a stained glass window commemorating the

memory of his grandparents back in the 1800s.

The weather was a bit on the chilly side but the day was enjoyed by all.

CATHOLIC College Bendigo teacher Kate Watts and students Tahlia and Ainslee spoke to the Probus Club of White Hills about a recent trip to Bantang Island in the Phillipines.

Kate told of the background to how the trip came about. Three young men (Sam, Dan and Will) identified the need for a library at Saboo, Bantang Island.

On further investigation into the project it identified that what they really needed was a ‘village’ - not just a library. On return to Australia the boys worked in the Albury Wodonga district to raise funds for the project.

In 2017 four teachers and 16 students made the long and difficult trip to just get to Bantang Island.

Families who were to be recipients of the houses, are not just given the house once built, they had to work alongside the students and volunteers contributing to the build.

Tahlia said she wanted to go on the ‘trip of a lifetime’ to help with the project, meet and learn about the culture, and still build a house. She found the whole experience ‘enriching’. They had to raise the funds to get to the Philippines, which was achieved by ‘bake sales’ which raised $9000; the balance for the money raised went to the building of a ‘commercial chook shed” for the whole community.

Ainslie revealed her journey from Year 8, when her sister went on a trip a year before her. Even the plane journey felt unreal. The children were so welcoming.

To build a house you had to chop trees, dig trenches as well as help with the planting of agricultural crops. Then there

Building regulations are very different in the Philippines, not quite to Australian standards. The weather is hot and very humid, 20-26 degrees. The work is hard, with two broken shovels and a crowbar, no wheelbarrows or modern building equipment or agricultural tools.

The afternoon activities were bike riding, a trip to the market to purchase food and to cook with the families.

For these poor families the parents go away to work and grandparents raise the children. Education is not an option, though there is a plan to set up a ‘scholarship process’ for the village children, in the hope that same may get to go to university.

Health services in the village are also non-existent. There is no running water, and toilet facilities very primitive.

The highlight of the trip was the last night in a four-star hotel.

July simply the best

for Christmas WHAT better way to spend a cold winter’s day than to hop on a Simcocks’ Bus Services coach with driver Ben and your Probus friends from Pakenham East Probus Club?

Fifty-five members journeyed up through the misty rolling hills of Noojee for a Christmas in July celebration at The Outpost Retreat in Noojee.

A welcome cuppa in the rustic surrounds of the adjacent Toolshed Bar Bistro put everyone’s mood into a festive mode.

Relaxing among the display of historic photos, tools of a bygone logging era and warmth from the huge open fireplace was so inviting that it was difficult to move on for Christmas lunch.

The restaurant had been given a Christmas transformation complete with a decorated tree, strands of twinkling lights across the ceiling, and a fireplace with stockings and tables set for the Christmas meal. Members remarked that they even suspected an “incognito” Father Christmas had taken the time to make an appearance.

Hosts David and Michelle Peterson and their most obliging staff made sure that refreshments were quickly dispensed, all were seated and ready to be served a generous plate of roast meats and vegetables.

Plum pudding with custard and cream accompaniments finished the meal and fully satisfied appetites.

Attention turned from eating to entertainment prepared and presented by outings extraordinaire Laurie Hudgson, who set about selecting “victims” for his production of Cinderella.

With a little persuasion and the aid of a few props, Barry Hoghton, Lindsay Board and Barry Hodge were transformed into the ugly step-sisters, Carol Porter as the magical fairy God-mother, Joan Vogels as the beguiling Cinderella and Roel Knaap as her dashing Prince Charming to be.

What followed was an uproarious performance that very loosely followed the old-time favorite fairytale.

Enjoying the Christmas in July lunch at The Outpost are, left side of the table from back, Margaret Perkins, Cecilia Martin, Joan Cooper and Gaye Montagu and, right side, Faye Fidone, Robert Fidone and Mary Ballard.

The production was well scripted but the actors struggled to maintain their composure which of course, made the skit even funnier.

It ended well, with the prince “getting his girl” and the audience left with aching jaws from so much laughter. Well done Laurie.

Laurie’s stand-in, Kevin Mayo, was responsible for all the behind the scenes organisation and members were most appreciative of his efforts.

Lucky tickets rewarded many members with a box of chocolates making a very “sweet” finish to a wonderful day of fun and friendship.

A huge thankyou to David and Michelle for their hospitality. They went above and beyond to ensure that this Christmas in July was an occasion to be well remembered.

Twin Rivers Probus Club Commonwealth Games medal winners

Fun and games PROBIAN Mary Marwood called contestants to gather at the Bamawm Extension hall on Thursday 20 July to compete in the Twin Rivers Probus Club Commonwealth Games.

Some 30 rivals and officials sang a resounding rendition of ‘Advance Australia Fair’ which reverberated around the hall, followed by the official opening ceremony conducted by club president Keith Robertson.

Points from nine events were keenly strived for, not least of all being the mind bending ‘timed card placement memory test’. As the nearby Olympic size pool was not entirely ready, the swimming event was cancelled; besides it was too cold.

As the hive of activity abated and events were completed, aggregate scores were compiled revelling several ladies well ahead of the men.

On a Snowy Mountains high THIRTY members of the Probus Club of Safety Beach enjoyed a five-day coach trip to the Snowy Mountains in mid-November 2016.

On day one, they drove from Dromana to their motel in Cooma, via stops for morning tea at Yarragon in drizzly rain, lunch at Lakes Entrance and Cann River.

By lunchtime on day one the skies had cleared and it was perfect weather for the rest of the week.

Day two was spent in Cooma, visiting the impressive Hydro-electric Visitors Centre, the Birdsnest online shopping store and the Cooma Jail museum. Late in the afternoon, members drove out to the nearby Mt Gladstone Park lookout.

Day three was a drive via Jindabyne to a tour of the Gaden Trout Hatchery. After lunch back in Jindabyne, it was off to Charlotte Pass for a distant view of snow covered Mt Kosciuszko and a snowball fight.

The group said farewell to Cooma on day four and travelled via Adaminaby to a morning tea break - a reserve overlooking the village at Cabramurra. From there they proceeded via magficient scenery and the various Snowy Hydro lakes to Corryong for lunch, then drove via Yackandandah to an overnight stop at a motel on the outskirts of Bright.

Day five was an early start, as there was a long day ahead. Travelling via the scenic Ovens and King River valleys to Mansfield for lunch (and some retail therapy), they arrived back in Dromana late that afternoon, having covered some 1750 kilometres.

news THIRTY-EIGHT members of the Probus Club of Ballarat South enjoyed a twoday getaway to Phillip Island in May. Travelling by coach they visited the Wonthaggi State Coal Mine and enjoyed a scrumptious lunch before being taken on an extremely interesting tour of the mine and the museum.

Operating from 1909 to 1968, the State Coal Mine offered a journey back in time to discover what life working in a coal mine was like in the 1900s.

Members ventured underground through the dark network of tunnels to get hands-on at the coal face and learn how Victoria’s hardworking men extracted the black gold.

They then journeyed onto Cowes at Phillip Island where they were greeted with a warm welcome to the beautiful Seahorse Motel where they stayed the night.

Several of the members took the opportunity to visit the penguins at dusk before joining the rest of the group and dining out at Sherwoods Restaurant.

Next day on arrival at the Vietnam Veterans War Museum they were greeted with a Devonshire morning tea of hot scones, jam and cream.

The Sound and Light Show and also the tour was a sight not to be missed and the museum itself was amazing.

One of the members Ruth Feeney was very happy to find a photo of her late husband 3788730 Private James (Jim) Feeney from 7RAR, displayed on a wall at the museum.

Before departing for home members enjoyed a refreshing lunch at the Rusty Waters Brewery and celebrated three members’ birthdays.

Film, wine and popcorn THE East Malvern Combined Probus Club held another one of their twice-yearly Flicks Night at their clubrooms.

Despite the chilly weather, more than 50 members rolled up for the night film, Shirley Valentine, straight after another episode from the Batman serial of the ‘50s.

How he survived again one would never know, but he is Batman after all.

On arrival a warming sherry was served and at interval wine and popcorn followed by coffee and tea brought satisfaction to the members.

Due thanks must go the organisers Ernie and Sandy Brigham, and with help from their committee these nights are thoroughly enjoyed for very little cost.

Oldies behaving like little kids SIXTY East Malvern Combined Probus Club members dressed up in their best country outfits for an entertaining night of dance and laughs after a delicious spit roast catered by Spitting Image Catering.

Moonlight Shadow played all the right music and the “oldies” who formed more than half the crowd took part in line dancing, the nutbush, running bear and, of course, the hokey pokey.

You’re never too old to behave like kids - that’s our motto!

The collection is housed in a factory in an industrial area of Bulleen.

The building, original designed for the manufacture of computer electronics, works well for the preservation and storage of over 10,000 items of costumes, jewellery and accessories.

The collection is the work of Loel Thomson who has been collecting for over 30 years. The collection was originally housed at Noorilim, an Italianate mansion in Murchison that was for many years the home of Loel and her husband.

Loel made a point of telling all present the collection is of clothes which have been worn in Australia from 1778 until today, although many were not made in Australia.

The museum includes many forms of clothing over the years, but does not include theatre costumes or military uniforms.

Loel changes the exhibition regularly.

The current exhibition is set up as a series of rooms, each for a particular era.

Easily recognised were the suspender belts worn by many to hold up their school stockings.

Beautifully smocked children’s clothes, dresses very similar to those worn by our mothers and grandmothers were also on display

“LAYING of the Keel” an exhibition celebrating 50 years of shipbuilding and cruising on the Murray River by the Veenstra family, will be on display at Signal Point Gallery, Goolwa, SA, during September 2017.

The 50 year journey of the Veenstra family’s involvement in boat building and cruising started post World War II in Holland. Kornelis (Keith) was conscripted into the Dutch Navy and began serving his time as a shipwright. Marrying Maartje (Miep) and with child Kees (Jock) migrated to Australia in 1951.

In 1965, Keith and Miep purchased the old paddlesteamer “PS Captain Sturt”, the boat yard and slipway where she was moored on the water front at Goolwa. This became the family home and later the office for Murray River Developments and Goolwa Ship Constructions.

Keith saw an opportunity to operate cruises to the Murray Mouth, and in 1967, he designed and built a vessel capable of carrying 50 passengers – MV Aroona.

Keith skippered the boat himself and Miep made and served morning/afternoon tea to passengers.

It was Keith’s dream to build and operate a boat able to accommodate passengers in cabins, while cruising the river. In December 1972, it became a reality when construction of the Murray River Queen commenced. The MRQ was to be a side wheel paddle-steamer for 64 passengers in 32 cabins.

On 26 March 1974, the maiden voyage with passengers set off. A cruise program quickly became successful, achieving a 98 per cent cruise occupancy. An extra eight cabins were added, taking capacity to 80 – these were built by Keith’s son, Jock, while cruising with passengers.

The Veenstra family went on to build many other vessels including the Murray River Explorer, a new Aroona, and Murray Princess (the largest vessel ever to ply the Murray River at 67 metres long, beam 15 metres, over 1500 gross tons, five decks, and capacity of 120 passengers).

In the late ‘80s, the business was sold; Keith retired, and later passed away in 1989. Jock retained the Murray Mouth cruise business, expanded the operation, and upgraded the boats. The business name became Spirit Australia Cruises.

The business still operates day cruises under the “Spirit of the Coorong” umbrella, to the mouth of the Murray River and into the Coorong National Park. Visitors may even catch Jock captaining “Spirit of the Murray” or “Spirit II” on one of the many extended, one way, cruises along the length of the Murray River, between Albury NSW and Goolwa SA.

Those teenage holidays CAN you remember where you holidayed as a teenager?

It’s easy for multi award-winning BIG4 Deniliquin Holiday Park owners Frank and Lynda White to remember, as they bought the place they first met at!

As teenagers both Frank and Lynda holidayed with their friends in the park (then called Paringa Caravan Park) every summer enjoying their passion of water skiing and fishing. AS A GP for over 30 years, I have watched many long-time patients become older aged. In fact, I am reminded that I am approaching the older bracket myself by my deteriorating joints! However, the much more confronting issue for many of my patients as they age, are fears of loss of intellectual capacity, physical capacity and of loss of independence.

As for all health issues, it is better to discuss these fears openly with your GP rather than become increasingly anxious or sad about them. There is so much more understanding nowadays of the capacity of older people to still make improvements in physical strength, improve balance (which minimises risk of falls) and in mental health and wellbeing.

Changes in memory are the most challenging for all. Some decline in intellectual function with age particularly in the speed of processing information - is normal. Losing track of items, difficulty seeing through a task to completion, difficulty following recipes or other complex instructions can be early clues to real memory impairment.

It’s a good idea if you are 75 years old or older to discuss with your GP having an annual health assessment (the Medicare system has a special item for this) which includes a simple test of cognitive ability (intellect and memory).

You do not need to wait until you are 75 to undergo the screening test - it

can be incorporated into a consultation with your GP. However, if you are keen for that more comprehensive checkup, remember to ask for a longer appointment.

When joints are damaged by ageing, many people respond by restricting exercise and becoming very protective of themselves, limiting their social and community activities. However, careful and consistent exercise regimes designed around an individual’s own physical limitations can be safely undertaken.

Again, discussing options with your GP for referral to appropriate physical therapy for the right advice and supervision, can result in not only preservation of current physical capacity - but even substantial improvement. Retaining physical fitness and strength also assists with retaining good intellectual function - an added bonus.

Many of my older patients are an inspiration. Classes at University for the Third Age (U3A), CAE or in the community provide both intellectual engagement and a social connection, while many embrace information technology as an exciting tool to connect them to experiences, friends and family.

So, if you are beginning to feel despondent that there is nothing you can do, please see your GP and discuss your current physical and mental health, and work together to assess what interventions will preserve your independence for as long as possible. There is no need to place limitations on enjoyment of life, even as some capacities decline.

Apt, ept and ineptocracy…

I WAS at the bowling club when a fellow walked up to me and shoved a piece of paper in my hand. The heading said ineptoracy. It had a spelling mistake.

The heading should have been ineptocracy. But who was I to judge? After all, the word was unusual, so maybe it was a new word.

He might even have made up the word.

As I looked closer the word, allegedly from the Department of Defence, had an explanation that led me to believe it was a made-up word, similar to ones that cross my desk on a daily basis.

The explanation said: “A system of government where the least capable to lead are elected by the least capable of producing, and where the members of society are least likely to sustain themselves or succeed, are rewarded with goods and services paid for by the confiscated wealth of a diminishing number of producers.”

Now, there are enough clues there to convince you that it is a made-up word.

But peopled are making up words every day.

Several people are are making up definitions for inept every day. I qualify for most of them, although I hesitate at stupid, screwball, witless and a few other words.

So I checked.

I consulted Collins, Heinemann, Macquarie, Webster, and Readers Digest (Readers Digest said “an inept cook” but I by-passed that). I checked Johnson and the First Real Dictionary from 1604.

Another Readers Digest dictionary in my possession said inept meant ”inefficient, incompetent, unskilled untrained, unqualified, without dexterity, bungling, ineffective, ineffectual, awkward, clumsy, maladroit”. I would question unskilled. The

most ept person in the world (yes, there is such a word) has to get a skill somewhere.

Maybe, he should have gone somewhere else to get his skills.

My 20-volume Oxford English Dictionary didn’t also include ineptocracy, so I confidently expected it was a made-up word.

My big dictionary listed several words that included inept.

They included inept, inepticality, ineptitude, ineptly and ineptness, but no ineptocracy.

The word came from middle French, if you forget the Latin.

The earliest use of the word inept, that I could find, was in 1603. In that year, Body of Man said: “A ineptitude to learn sheweth a drie and different braine”. In the same year, Leviath talked about the differences between apt and inept.

In October 1895, Cornhill Magazine said “the lawyers of the land were singularly inept when our soldiers and sailors were at their best”.

Under inepticality, the big dictionary said somebody who was a very pleasant person showed attacks of total inepticality.

Ineptitude meant the quality of being totally inept.

Ineptly meant in a totally inept manner, even the quality of being inept.

Ept came into the language very late, would you believe 1938, as an antonym for inept. It meant, according to my big dictionary, adroit, appropriate, effective.

In that year, EB White in a letter said, “I am much obliged to you for your warm, courteous and ept treatment of a rather week, skinny subject”. Several other people started using ept from that date.

But I wonder if ept came from the word apt.

Apt, according to my big dictionary, started life in 1791 to mean fitting. It gradually changed to “to make fit” and then to suit.

Probably not, although some dictionaries say yes.

Detox dieting for your pets Russell Harrison, Head of Hospital Services Lort Smith CEO IT SEEMS there are a thousand health and wellness regimes these days, whether it’s a cleanse, detox or a diet.

But ignoring the fads and trends, we all know it’s important to maintain a healthy, balanced diet - and the same is true for our animal companions.

Estimates vary, but as many as 40 per cent of pets in Australia are overweight. We all like to treat our special friends to a little something special from time to time.

But consider this: a cat eating 25 grams of cheese is equivalent to a human eating three and a half hamburgers!

Animals who are overweight are prone to a number of health issues – including diabetes mellitus and pancreatitis, while they are also putting more pressure on their hearts and joints which can often worsen clinical signs of arthritis and heart disease.

So what can we do to help our pets maintain a healthy weight? Just like for humans, the key is exercise and balanced eating.

There are a vast variety of pet foods available - provide your pet with one that is completely balanced and contains all the right amounts of fats, proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals required.

The amount you feed may vary from the guidelines due to the health, weight, activity level and age of the pet: puppies and kittens less than three months need three

to four meals daily, while senior pets may need multiple smaller feeds each day.

It’s important to always provide plenty of fresh water, but milk is not essential – even for cats. In fact, a cup of milk might seem like a small treat for a cat, but it would be like you or I snacking on half a dozen large blueberry muffins.

Also, it’s important to only ever give your dog raw bones and never feed your pets chocolate, onions, macadamia nuts, sultanas or grapes. Table scraps can be high in fat and cause obesity or pancreatitis – so they should be off your pet’s menu too.

We all lead busy lives, and often it can be tempting to skip walking your dog after a long day. But it is important to exercise your pet regularly – especially if they are larger and have a lot of energy. It doesn’t have to be a long walk, you can play games like fetch if you are unable to take you dog out or you could got to a pet-friendly beach for a swim.

Don’t forget, cats need plenty of exercise too. You can encourage your feline friend to play with toys or chase a piece of string. Not only will it help keep them fit, it’s also an entertaining way to spend time with your cat.

There are also some additional specific requirements to consider if you have a different type of animal as a pet.

Despite what Bugs Bunny cartoons may have taught us, a rabbit’s diet should not be exclusively made up of carrots. Like fruit, they should only be a special treat (a small slice a day is OK).

Rabbits and guinea pigs require a high-fibre, moderate protein and lowcarbohydrate diet. Three quarters of their food intake should be hay, with the rest mainly greens and some good quality feeding pellets.

Birds should also regularly tuck into leafy greens, along with good quality well balanced pellets. Again, it is a misconception that birds should eat lots of seeds. They can have minimal amounts, as long as they are not sunflower seeds.

If you’re unsure about exactly what to feed your pet, or what to do if you’re worried they may be overweight, definitely speak with your vet. This way you will get the best advice to help your pet have a long, healthy and happy life.

Footy tipping results are eagerly awaited at each month and at a recent meeting members came wearing their teams colours.

FINE DINING, SAMPLING WINE CARAVANERS IN FESTIVE On a cold and wet winter’s day, Mooroolbark MODE Combined’s wine appreciation group members took the opportunity to warm up by the large open fireplace at the Fergusson Winery in Yarra Glen. After sampling a number of the local wines, members then proceeded to the dining room for a two-course lunch.

The Ladies Probus Club of Numurkah will host a meet and greet morning tea for the caravaners/cabiners who have been staying at the RACV resort, Cobram.

The venue is the Masonic Centre, Numurkah, between 10.30am and 11.30am on Saturday 21 October.

The town will be a hive of activities as this is the weekend of the town’s Food Bowl Festival. There will be a Lions Club Market along the creek, food vans, music along the main street and a street parade to close off the morning.

Musicians will be playing at venues around the town; guided tours of the Kinnairds Wetlands will take place throughout the day and easy walking tracks follow the Broken

Creek between the lake and golf course.

There are cabins at the caravan park and golf club. Also short stay accommodation is also available (check websites).

A long lunch will be held on the banks of the Broken Creek on Sunday to wind up the weekend’s festivities.

Preparations for Numurkah’s longest running community event, the 130th annual show, will also be taking place from Saturday afternoon 21 October at the showgrounds. The show, which will be held on Wednesday 25 October, caters for all ages from two through to 102.

Attractions include a championship dog show with 400 plus dogs, show jumping, arena horse and harness classes, sheep, poultry, dairy and beef cattle. There will be pavilions full of cookery, craft, art and flowers.

Enjoy demonstrations of sheep shearing, spinning and weaving. There will be side shows and show bags.

The Victorian Government Truck, aka Vicky the Truck, will be there. Visitors can go inside and view stories and pictures of regional Victoria through special glasses.

Drop in to the kiosk or dining room in the community pavilion to meet members of the Ladies Probus who are part of the band of volunteers happily cutting sandwiches and making cups of tea.

Circus Oz tour fun NOBLE Park Combined Probus Club had an outing to Circus Oz headquarters in Johnston Street in Collingwood on Wednesday 28 June.

The 17 members enjoyed a two-hour tour hosted by Sebastian, who took them on a conducted tour behind the scenes.

They also took in the sewing room, the costumes, the wigs and the workshop where all the props are made.

The rehearsals by the performers were also very interesting. It was the club’s best tour yet.

Good time behind bars for the old prison crew IN late July the Probus Club of Golden Square celebrated a ‘Boys’ Day Out’ with a visit to the old Bendigo prison.

The prison has now been converted into the Ulumbarra Theatre and holds many events each year.

The ‘boys’ and one girl – who missed an earlier tour – were given an impressive and informative tour of the place viewing some of the cells that have been retained as part of its history.

Their guide was ably assisted by one of the visitors who was previously a warder at the prison.

LOOKING closely at embroidery never fails to enthral the admirer, whether they are moved simply by the colour and imagery, or bemused by its technical complexity.

A gentle art it may be, but visitors to Ebb & Flow - the annual exhibition of members’ works at The Embroiderers Guild, Victoria in Malvern - will see just how modern day embroiderers employ traditional and contemporary techniques to create a stunning display of stitched works.

An intriguing additional feature to delight visitors is the Challenge section, where entries are restricted to 15x15x15cm maximum size. The theme for this year’s mini-works of art is “Take a Shell …”, judged by renowned artist Louise Saxton.

The Embroiderers Guild, Victoria, has 1500 members across Victoria and provides classes, workshops, and guidance groups to ensure embroidery continues to flourish. Catering for complete beginners through to advanced levels, the guild’s activities are not confined to Melbourne; branches and country groups throughout Victoria provide the same opportunity to meet, learn and share.

French lauded war veteran PAKENHAM man and the recipient of France’s highest accolade, the French Legion of Honour, Jack Kane has died on 16 June, aged 93.

He was a former Probus Club president.

The Englishman and World War II veteran was born on 16 February 1924 in London to Morris and Frances.

He had two much older sisters, Bessie by 11 years - and Freda - by 16 years.

As a child, he was a quick learner and soon joined the accelerated learning environment with other like-minded students.

The scholar was intelligent beyond his years, but when told he would be a prefect in sixth form, Jack asked to be excused as gate duty and detention supervision did not appeal to him.

Jack had a dream of attending university, but gave in to his parents’ constant pressures to find a job.

They didn’t believe in higher education, so at 18, he enlisted into the British Armed Forces.

He married Josephine, who he met at a youth club, in April 1944, and in June was sent to war.

It was 6 June 1944 when Jack landed in Normandy, aged 20, as a member of a specialised heavy weapons platoon in the Middlesex Regiment.

Wounded in July, he was sent back to Britain for treatment and sent back into the fray.

He served in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany before returning home in 1945, with some battle scars.

He then enrolled in an electrical course in a bid to avoid being posted to the Pacific.

About this time, he changed his name from Kopeloff to Kane to eliminate possible discrimination for the family a few months before his daughter Diane was born in December 1946.

Once he wrapped up his studies, he was sent to Egypt as an instructor for another year before being discharged in October 1947 to care for Jose, who was suffering from stress after living with his mother for three years.

Civilian life meant a move to Frinton in Essex and a job as an electrician at a power station.

His second child Richard was born in January 1949 at home, but tragically died in April 1950 after contracting a virulent bowel infection.

It was the discovery of nuclear power plants that saw Jack take charge of his post-war career and eventual immigration to Australia in January 1958, with Jose, Diane

Young Jack fought through Europe after landing on D-Day. and his two other children Allister (born 1952) and Nicholas (born 1956).

They arrived in Australia to a heatwave of 100 degrees wearing their best clothes.

Within two days of his arrival, Jack had gained employment as a boiler house

engineer with the promise that he would be given the job of operations engineer at the Spencer Street Power Station.

This upset his fellow Australian workers who didn’t want a Pommy taking a position that should have gone to one of their own, even though no-one had the experience to satisfy the requirements of the job.

Jack couldn’t work under those conditions and promptly resigned.

His next role was that as a contract engineer commissioning the first four boilers on the ‘D’ station at Yallourn.

This position saw him working in places from Bendigo to Tasmania.

Being away from home so much wasn’t fair on Jose and the kids, so he took a job at Dunlop Rubber as its power engineer in south Melbourne in 1959 but, as it turned out, the job required travelling from Bairnsdale to Abbotsford to Bundoora.

Jack built his little slice of paradise in North Clayton in 1961.

There he joined the parent teacher organisation of his children’s school and found himself elected president.

This was the start of his association with many community groups over the years including, later on, U3A. Jack studied business management which led him to be offered various managerial roles in a number of large Australian and international companies.

He retired aged 59 in 1982 after receiving a forced voluntary redundancy and became “a grey nomad” for a short period of time before being called upon to fill part-

time and short-term employment roles.

This was also the year he became an Australian citizen.

Finally at 60 he retired - almost.

He agreed to take on small consulting jobs, and joined numerous community groups including Probus.

Sadly, he lost Jose after an 18-year battle with cancer in 1993.

To take his mind off his devastating loss, Jack set up the Woodworkers of the Southern Peninsula Association which were used to make toys that were given away. He lobbied to have new premises built.

It was at a Scottish country dancing class that he met Irena, a widow 15 years younger than him, who was to be his companion for more than 20 years.

Jack moved to Pakenham in 2012, and once again became involved with his local community joining the Berwick Woodworkers club, Cardinia U3A and Cardinia Men’s Shed and was involved in breeding tropical fish.

It was on 7 July 2015 - 70 years after the war ended - that Jack was recognised for his efforts in World Word II. The veteran was awarded the decoration of the rank of chevalier of the French Legion of Honour for outstanding service in the liberation of France.

This was presented by the French ambassador at a ceremony at the Melbourne shrine, and was known as Jack’s proudest moment during a long, full life.

Jack would pass away two years later on 16 June 2017.
