A bureaucratic blame game has denied an eight-year-old with cerebral palsy vital household items, according to her distraught Whittington mother, Amy Karlberg.

Recycled water ‘nearing 30%’ as $42m plant idle Creek and Torquay areas would not be cost efficient until the two growth areas reached 5800 homes, he said.

“This is expected to be reached in time for next summer.”

The areas now had about 3600 homes connected to the system, Mr Northey said.

“Barwon Water will continue to monitor demand and weather conditions and may bring the plant online earlier.”

Under the relevant planning schemes for Armstrong Creek and Torquay north new-home builders must pay an extra $1215.54 to install purple pipes for Class A water.

“Purple pipe schemes will ensure communities such as Armstrong Creek and Torquay north are well-placed to respond to times of dry conditions when drinking water may be scarce,” Mr Northey said.

Barwon Water was supplying drinking water through the Class A system to the homes connected at Armstrong Creek and Torquay, he said.

The authority was charging customers the Class A price of $1.81 per kilolitre for the drinking water, which normally cost $2.26.

The cost of producing Class A was higher than drinking water, Mr Northey said.

The State Government was undertaking a review of pricing policy to “incentivise” the use of recycled water, he said.

“All final pricing is determined by the independent Essential Services Commission to ensure prices are what communities are willing and able to pay.”

The Class A plant was producing about 250 million litres a year which Barwon Water was blending with other recycled water for local farms, golf courses and large scale agriculture customers, Mr Northey said.

Rangers recognise ‘legend’ Lyn’s pride and dedication

By Luke Voogt For 40 years Lyn Toll has been the “heart and soul” of the Geelong Rangers, driving refugee children to training and volunteering at the soccer club.

“I’ll almost probably die there,” the 72-year-old told the Indy.

“I love seeing them go out in their uniforms, I’m very proud of them. That’s what motivates me.”

Lyn is one of dozens of nominees for Viva Energy’s Club Legend competition, in which an unsung volunteer and their club can win $5000 each.

Nominations are flooding in with entries closing on 10 September.

The Bell Post Hill pensioner was surprised and thrilled to receive a nomination, but admitted calling her nominee Kylie Chapman a “cheeky bugger”.

She cleans the clubrooms, runs the kitchen and has served on the club’s committee for years “to see the look on the kids’ faces”.

“I go to as many of the games as a possibly can,” Lyn said.

“You learn all their different cultures and their different beliefs.”

Kylie Chapman described Lyn as the “most loyal kind-hearted and trustworthy person”.

“You would struggle to find someone as dedicated, caring and loving as our Lyn,” she said.

“She helps anyone in need, finding boots for kids when they haven’t got a pair to putting her own hand in her pocket to help when needed.

“This woman is the heart and soul of Geelong Rangers, always there to open up the club rooms, there till the end to turn off lights and lock up.”

Viva’s Geelong Refinery will also give away thousands of additional dollars to the clubs of 21 other finalists in its Club Legends competition.

The company will host a Club Legend Awards Dinner to honour all the finalists and winners at Simonds Stadium on 16 October. Nominations are now open at clublegend.com.au.

Marcel Brundler told AAP he punched and kicked the four-metre shark before escaping on Tuesday morning with damage only to his wetsuit and board.

Barwon Water is on track to achieve its 30 per cent recycling target by 2020 despite a $42 million recycled-water plant sitting idle at Black Rock for the past four years.

The authority reached 23 per cent recycled water use in 2015/2016, said general manager infrastructure services Paul Northey.

“We were tracking well against that target and are continuing to identify opportunities to maximise recycled water use.”

The authority was now updating the targets for its 2018-2023 Price Submission, Mr Northey said.

Barwon Water built the $42 million plant at Black Rock in 2013 to provide Class A water for residents in Armstrong Creek and northern Torquay.

But the plant was yet to produce any water for homes, Mr Northey said.

Despite huffing and puffing in some media quarters, Cats fans this week displayed greater common sense on their team’s socalled “home” final against Richmond at the MCG rather than Simonds Stadium.

The supposed affront to Geelong washed over the fans queuing for tickets like red wine over the pants of a spiv in the President’s Lunch when TV crews tried pushing the issue for the nightly news.

Fans interviewed mostly resisted the parochial bait, noting the bleeding obvious: Simonds Stadium - capacity 36,000 compared to the MCG’s 100,000 - could never cater for an all-Victorian final.

And so their argument was justified the next day when the Cats V Tigers match was declared a sell-out.

A marginally weakened home advantage, yes, but that’s 64,000 extra heads able to attend the footy.

Further down the coast, the next tenants of one of Victoria’s rarest lease properties will have to remember not to turn out the light at night.

Parks Victoria has called for expressions of interest to operate Cape Otway Lightstation, with a tenancy of up to 21 years available.

The facility includes a number of features including a weather station and a souvenir shop, says Park Victoria, but the real centrepiece is clearly the towering lighthouse which was built in 1848 and is the oldest on mainland Australia.

Parks Victoria rightfully promotes the lease as “one of Victoria’s rarest lifestyle and business opportunities”.

Well, maybe so, but good luck with the electricity bill for that whopping light!

By Luke Voogt Geelong’s administrators have tightened controls on future councillors commenting publically.

Administrator chair Kathy Alexander said the council’s updated media policy removed “the notion” of any councillor other than the mayor being a spokesperson.

The policy prohibited councillors commenting on “key City announcements”, “controversial” matters or council “outcomes” without mayoral approval.

“Without this delegation, no other councillor can engage with media on behalf of council,” the policy reads.

The administrators also scrapped councillor portfolios while adopting the revised policy, effectively limiting councillors to commenting publically only on non-controversial ward matters.

Dr Alexander said portfolios provided councillors “too much opportunity” to challenge the mayor’s spokesperson right, in breach of the Local Government Act. Councillors could express differences with a council position only if they first made clear it was their personal opinion.

The media policy followed Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins appointing two monitors to watch over councillors following the October elections.

Former mayor Darryn Lyons laughed as he described the new media policy as bearing hallmarks of the “socialist” Andrews Government.

“Are we in North Korea or Geelong?” he said.

“People should be able to comment on whatever they want to comment about except if it’s to the detriment of Geelong and its people.”

Mr Lyons agreed the mayor should be council’s primary spokesperson but described the media policy as “toothless b*****t”.

“They can gag people as much as they like but they’ll just go to the media behind the mayor’s back and the media department’s back.”

Council hopeful Michael King described the policy as reasonable but said the new council should approve it, rather than the administrators.

“I don’t think it gags councillors. As long the media covers council meetings in an open arena those issues will be reported.”

Fellow candidate and sacked councillor Ron Nelson questioned the “unelected” administrators’ decision to scrap portfolios.

The former major events portfolio holder said he would take up the matter with the Local Government Minister if elected.

“It was never a problem for me in the past, so I’m not sure where they’re coming from with that.”

Ms Karlberg woke up 4am one morning in July in a daze surrounded by smoke.

She carried her daughter Nalah from their home and rescued two cats they had adopted.

Nalah, who was born premature at 25 weeks, has cerebral palsy, a movement disorder called dystonia and hip dislocation problems.

She underwent major surgery to prevent falls which could paralyse her for life at the Royal Children’s Hospital in February.

“They broke both her femurs, realigned them and placed rods into her joints and pins down her thighs,” Ms Karlberg said.

When the family returned home in late March Ms Karlberg used the spa to manage Nalah’s pain as she came off medication.

“Since (the fire) she has been very sore and not able to sleep very well,” she said.

“I don’t want to have my child on painkillers she’s eight years old.”

Ms Karlberg, who looks after Nalah on a carer’s pension, set up a Gofundme page as a last resort after “trying everything” to find funds to fix the spa.

The Royal Children’s Hospital requested Ms Karlberg get quotes for door ramps, rails and a bath hoist after the surgery, she said.

But six months later the hospital and the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) were at odds over funding the items, she said.

“I don’t know how many hours I’ve sat (at the NDIA) over the last couple of months.”

She hoped Geelong residents could donate to her “beautiful angel” who is currently wheelchairbound. “It would mean the world to us.”

Both an NDIA and a hospital spokesperson declined to comment on individual cases due to privacy reasons.

“The Royal Children’s Hospital provides clinical equipment for 30 days post discharge,” the hospital spokesperson said.

“After this point equipment is managed by the NDIA with the family.”

Another 100 construction jobs are about to begin in central Geelong after a Melbourne firm won a contract to redevelop the city’s performing arts centre.

Kane Constructions won the $38.5 million contract for works including a “striking” entrance and new studios at Geelong Performing Arts Centre (GPAC), State Government announced.

Kane has completed other high-profile projects around the city, including rebuilding GPAC’s Playhouse Theatre as well as the development of Simon Stadium and Geelong Library and Heritage Centre.

The latest project, beginning in September, would “reinvigorate” Geelong’s premier venue for the performing arts, said GPAC trust chair Michelle Quigley.

“Our centre is truly unique - one minute we’re hosting the best productions from around the

world and the next our theatres are filled with student productions and dance concerts.

“This project will ensure our centre keeps pace with the growing needs of our community; provide improved access to the Playhouse and muchneeded facilities including purpose-built dance and rehearsal studios.”

The revitalised GPAC would become a “landmark cultural facility for the region”, Ms Quigley said.

“In the provision of arts facilities, Geelong must make up ground, and we are delighted that this project is now underway.”

The government also announced up to $500,000 for a “large-scale artwork” on the redeveloped centre’s eastern wall.

The government had invited submissions from “local, national and international artists”, Creative Industries Minister Martin Foley said.

Shy lad, big role and time to shine

By Luke Voogt Geelong’s Robert Tripolino battled bullies and rejection to pursue his childhood love of dance.

But his persistence would instead see him become an actor and, recently, land his first principal role in a major Melbourne theatre production.

“Don’t let anyone push you down for something that makes you happy,” he told Indy Tuesday.

The 27-year-old comes from a musical family, who enrolled him in a ballet class at age four.

“They were always happy to take on a dance floor at a family wedding,” he said.

“I’m probably one of the shyer ones which is ironic given that I’m the one who’s pursued a theatre career.”

Robert, who was the only male dancer in his class, was forever grateful to his family for enrolling him.

“That really helped in getting to know other people around Geelong who were dancers,” he said.

Robert admits he was bullied and said it was worst when he went from primary to high school.

Although some of the nasty comments were more “hurtful” to look back on than they were at the time, he said.

Luckily, he met a bigger boy, a dancer from a ballet family, who became his best friend and “body guard”.

“There’s always going to be people there that will back you up and be at your side,” Robert said.

“Although I never told anybody that I was

jumping over to Sacred Heart to do ballet classes after school.

“Nowadays, there’s a lot more comfort for male dancers to be safe and enjoy it.”

Robert auditioned three times for the Australian Ballet School during Year 12 before they told him he lacked “the faculties to be a ballet dancer”.

He applied successfully for musical theatre at the Victorian Academy of Arts following a teacher’s suggestion.

“And I’ve never looked back,” he said.

Robert went on to work with legendary actor Geoffrey Rush and appear on shows like Upper Middle Bogan.

“I struggled to watch it because I was really nervous and thought I was the worst thing ever,” he said.

But later texts flooded in to congratulate him on the role. “It’s an incredible feeling,” he said.

Robert now plays ‘Omar’ in the Broadway musical Aladdin, which is running at Her Majesty’s Theatre in Melbourne.

Omar is one of three of Aladdin’s friends, which the writers of the original film cut in favour of the monkey Abu. “We’re gladly one third of the monkey. It’s written very well - we don’t have to work too hard to be funny," he said.

“You hear the crowd gasping when they see the magic carpet - it’s such a fun show."

The young Geelong actor has an Orlando Bloomesque appearance which he joked could help with his career.

“I do get that a lot. If he ever needs a bad stunt double, I’m the man.”

A will for stroke answers

High school students in Geelong are reaching out to help children on the islands of East Timor.

A Geelong community project involving the local secondary students is aimed at helping East Timorese children stay longer at all levels of schooling.

The project connects educational research between Geelong and East Timor, helping the developing nation improve its education systems with help from students and researchers from Deakin university.

Project leader Professor John Toumbourou, Chair in Health Psychology at Deakin, said the beauty of the project was that it was also connecting with students in the Geelong region too.

He said the Geelong-Viqueque Friendship Schools Network had a program that sent Year 10 and 11 students to East Timor in a partnership with village schools, to help teach English skills and provide teaching resources.

Professor Toumbourou said the Deakin project would partner with this program to help drive the goal of increased primary school attendance.

“Research shows that secondary students who have more volunteering experiences than their peers go on to have significantly higher rates of school completion and improved health, social and psychological adjustment in the post-school years,” Professor Toumbourou said.

“That means Australian communities like Geelong that encourage more students to volunteer and assist in places like East Timor will measurably improve young adult health and social adjustment.”

Members of East Timor’s Ministry of Education, Afonso Soares and Simao do Rosario, are enrolled in the Deakin Masters Research program to co-ordinate and evaluate the project.

“Most adults in East Timor never attended school, which makes it challenging to achieve our national goal to have all children complete primary school,” Mr do Rosario said.

“We have studied primary school enrolments and found that six of the 13 East Timor districts had very low levels of primary school completion.”

Belmont’s Nancy Jagger hopes her bequest to the Stroke Foundation will one day get lifesaving research over the line.

Nancy made the bequest after her sister-in-law Doreen suffered a stroke on the way to work in Horsham during 1994.

“Nothing can prepare you for the shock seeing a loved one in that way,” Nancy said.

The stroke paralysed Doreen on the right side of her body, and she remained in 24-hour care until she died five years ago.

“I don’t think anybody realises the impact a stroke has on a family until they experience it,” she said.

“You struggle to come to grips with it.”

Nancy donated a percentage of her estate to the Stroke Foundation in the hope it could fund regional care, education or prevention research.

“The Stroke Foundation doesn’t have the same prominence that other charities do,” she said.

“That’s why I got involved - I feel quite comfortable about leaving a legacy to them.”

The retiree encouraged Geelong locals to do the same after they had thought about their family in their will.

“I’m just making people aware that there are some very needy charities,” she said.

“It can be any amount. Decide on a charity and then actually approach them.”

Nancy’s mother was dying of cancer when Doreen had her stroke. Her father also died of cancer, which prompted her to volunteer at a Geelong community hospice.

Stroke Foundation’s Ross Anderson was grateful for “wonderful people” like Nancy leaving bequests.

“It funds a lot of our work,” he said.

A nation-wide study of charities found 29 per cent of Australians would like to leave a gift in their will, but only 7.5 per cent do so.

Police launched an Australia-first burglary prevention trial - the brainchild of Geelong’s top cop - in Norlane on Tuesday.

Victoria Police Assistant Commissioner Tess Walsh launched the six-month trial of a property marking-liquid, which begins in 1000 homes across Geelong and Whittlesea on Friday.

Residents can apply the liquid to up to 50 valuable items and it is near impossible to remove.

The liquid contains a unique synthetic DNA code, which police can identify with a UV lamp, allowing them to return stolen items to the registered owner.

AC Walsh hoped the technology would “go a long way in deterring thieves and driving down the number of residential burglaries.”

Police would accompany the trial with house signage to further deter potential offenders, she said.

Geelong Superintendent Craig Gillard came across the technology two years ago during a study trip to the UK and USA. “As I talked to my colleagues in these countries I learnt how widespread this technology was,” Supt Gillard told the Indy recently.

“Having read the evaluation reports I knew that this technology was having a real impact on lowering crime rates and I thought we really need to try this out in Australia.”

Supt Gillard hoped the technology would further reduce burglary rates, which decreased slightly between April 2016 and March 2017, following an increase of 25 per cent the previous year.

“This pilot represents 18 months of hard work getting it up,” he said.

“I’m always ready to try new things because, when it comes to crime prevention, if you keep on doing the same things you keep having the same results.

“There are going to be a lot of eyes on the results of this pilot so we are all going to be working very hard to make it a success.”

Police Minister Lisa Neville joined the assistant commissioner for the launch at Norlane’s Centenary Hall.

“This will be a major deterrent for thieves and is just one of many crime prevention initiatives Safety Alliance Victoria will trial in an effort to reduce residential burglaries,” she said.

AC Walsh reminded residents to “play their part” in preventing burglaries by securing homes, removing valuables from sight and making their homes look occupied.

“Our intelligence shows that one third of all homes broken into have no sign of forced entry,” AC Walsh said.

Letters Fired up for Australia Day Regarding Geelong council CEO Kelvin Spiller stating in last week’s Indy that Geelong’s Australia Day would remain on 26 January, was there any community discussion and consultation for this decision?

Geelong One Fire Committee has been part of recent enthusiastic discussions about 26 January and a potential change of date for Australia Day. The committee considers the issue an opportunity to discuss our history and for further reconciliation locally with First Nations people.

Brushing these issues under the carpet seems detrimental.

New council’s tight leash With council monitors (Geelong Indy, 25 August) now combined with a probable devil-in-the-detail Our Future vision template, what wriggle room will be afforded to Geelong’s reinstated council after the October poll?

Local MPs Simon Ramsay and Andrew Katos have already expressed concerns over what is tantamount to short-leash purported local governance.

Council administrators chair Kathy Alexander, in spruiking the administrators’ vision statement, said: “It would be very unwise for a politician who did not take note ... from a community who achieved a high degree of consensus”.

So from where will the progressive, teamed grunt and traction emanate?

Call it pedantic but this is a university city. It has a university hospital and the duo of Deakin University and Barwon Health provide the jobs and far outweigh any other entity, aside from a dormant Avalon Airport, in terms of public/ private partnerships and allied funding.

At least two of the region’s three main lobby groups support a continuation of the administration to 2020, thereby making a fair fall of Simon Ramsay’s concerns that the monitors threaten “to be a backdoor external administration of the council until 2020”.

Ratepayers are entitled to hear from ward councillor aspirants what their specific local, city and regional unambiguous priorities would be in what more likely than not will remain predetermined circumstances.

I do not suggest any community of interest between the administrators and Committee for Geelong. My only observation is that nature abhors a vacuum and power will be exercised.

The real question is whose interests are being served.

The unelected, unaccountable administrators might feel constrained by their lack of a democratic mandate, unlike the former councillors, but appearances are important.

No one wants a return to the former useless and dysfunctional elected council model, so maybe a solution is to appoint council at random from all the electors in the City of Greater Geelong.

I’m not surprised that Rebecca Casson called for the elections for Geelong council to be postponed (Geelong Indy, 11 August).

It’s probably simple coincidence that previous Committee of Geelong executive director Peter Dorling is one of the three administrators now running the city.

Geelong Gaol ended up in the hands of City of Greater Geelong after Kennett Government-appointed commissioners bought the building in 1994 in a strange deal without money changing hands.

The commissioners agreed to take the gaol off the State Government’s hands in return for the

At the time the gaol had been closed for three years.

So what was the benefit to the community of transferring ownership of the gaol to the council?

Frankly, nothing.

This has never been a good deal for Geelong.

Over the past 23 years the City of Greater Geelong has paid hundreds of thousands of dollars in basic maintenance on the ageing facility.

Some would argue this has been offset by lease fees but the hidden cost of holding this asset has been the hundreds of hours of council officer and councillor time spent reviewing the needs of a decaying site and attempting to improve the situation.

This has distracted from spending time on projects that benefit the community.

In a rate-capped environment, hard decisions need to be made about how to best allocate ratepayer dollars.

If the current expressions of interest process to sell Geelong Gaol is unsuccessful, the City of Greater Geelong should hand it back to the State Government.

The performers' authentic take on the trio’s clothes, style and moves showcase five decades of the Gibb brothers success as rock and disco legends, while audiences groove to their memorable music and are immersed in the disco era.

The Australian Bee Gees Show has formed a massive following worldwide and plays to packed out shows in Las Vegas.

Michael Clift plays the role of Barry Gibb, and is looking forward to hitting G-Town with the band, which formed 21 years ago “The show started in Geelong,” he said.

“We’ve been there heaps of times, and we love it. We have always thought it was important to continue coming back to play in Australia.”

Clift said while the show had enjoyed success on an international stage, they still enjoyed bringing it back to Australia.

“We want to keep coming back to Australia, and sometimes we play at a 5000-seat stadium or a 500-seat venue and it doesn’t really matter because it’s such a fun show to do,” he said.

Most tribute bands face the dilemma of a loyal, but ageing audience. Not so for these guys.

“I think in the last seven years, our audience is actually getting younger,” he said.

“We are now getting groups of 20-something women and we think ‘hang on, they’re in the wrong showroom’. They know all the words.”

Concertgoers at GPAC on Sunday are in for a treat.

“We’ve dragged the white suits out of retirement and having a bit of fun with it,” Clift said.

Clift said it was never a goal to play in the band.

JIVE TALKING: The Australian Bee Gees Show is coming to Geelong.

“It was more that we thought it would be a great show to do,” he said.

“The main motivation at first was to see if we could cover it musically first and then get the look after that.”

Clift said people didn’t embrace the show at first, more than two decades ago.

“At the start they didn’t really warm to us,” he said.

“It took a while for them to work out that we were doing a heartfelt show, and it did eventually build over time.”

Geelong is the last stop for the band on its Australian tour. After that, they head to the US for three shows and then back to the Excalibur in Las Vegas.

Incidentally, today (1 September) is the real Barry Gibb’s birthday.

Sunday’s show is at Geelong Performing Arts Centre at 8pm.

This Girl’s a familiar face

By Luke Voogt Veteran Australian performer Rachael Beck will celebrate her career and new album This Girl with her latest solo show in Geelong next week.

Beck will share her story with locals through songs from her long list of theatre credits, which include classics like Cabaret and Les Miserables.

“It’s full of great stories that people have never heard,” the 46-year-old told the Indy Monday.

“Be prepared to be surprised.”

Beck performed alongside Hugh Jackman in Beauty and the Beast, which won the 1996 ARIA Award for the Best Australian Soundtrack, Cast, or Show Release.

“He’s just a gorgeous guy,” she said. “Just like a puppy dog - he’s so full of energy. I think that’s why he’s successful.”

The three-time Green Room Award winner said her new show was a tribute to the people who followed her career.

Beck won best leading actress in the awards for her performances in Les Miserables, Singing in the Rain and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

She plays Lisa Parker in Home and Away and has appeared on a number of iconic Australian shows including Stingers, Flying Doctors and Hey Dad. Beck will also belt out rock anthems by artists such as Kate Bush, Bob Dylan and KD Lang, as well her own tune - Perfect Day. She wrote the heartfelt tune about waking up next to the “perfect” person every day.

“I don’t need anything else to be happy,” she said.

This Girl runs in Geelong next Wednesday and Thursday as part of Geelong Performing Arts Centre’s Musical Mornings.

Miniature trains are free for dads Portarlington Miniature Railway is open for business.

The ongoing re-development at the Point Richards Precinct being carried out by Bellarine Bayside has advanced enough to allow the railway to recommence passenger services starting this weekend.

The railway will re-open on Sunday 3 September and every Sunday thereafter from 11am to 4pm.

“This project commenced on 17 July and involved the complete re-development of the boat ramp car park and facilities adjoining the miniature railway area," railway secretary Brian Coleman said.

“When finally completed around mid-September, access to the railway will be by a dedicated foreshore access road with adjacent car parking and picnic facilities nearby.

"As it is also Father’s Day this Sunday, better bring Dad down to the railway with the great news that dads will ride free all day. Now that’s not going to break the family budget. Let’s get everyone outside in the sun and have some playtime."

The miniature railway is situated within the grounds of the Portarlington Bayside Family Park, corner of Point Richards and Boat roads, Portarlington.

Coast-inspired art Amanda Holmes Tzafrir has captured seven years of Torquay life in paint in her latest exhibition Corridors of Light.

The long-time artist moved to the town in 2010 in search of the “drama of the natural world”.

“Moving my family to Torquay has been exhilarating,” she said.

“The coast is right there. I can go out and sketch and get my inspiration instantly.”

Amanda worked in television and film in Sydney for more than two decades, editing documentaries on topics such as tribal Aborigines.

She has painted her “whole life” but dedicated herself to her art 15 years ago after becoming a full-time carer for her mother and giving birth to her child.

“The hope and impulse for my art is to gift the viewer with a moment as I experienced a scene that stirred my emotion and imagination,” she said.

“Beauty surrounds us if we care to see, offering hope that exists for us all.”

Amanda moved to a property on the beach to inspire her work and provide a better life for her family.

“The southern light here is not like any others I’ve ever seen in Australia and the world,” she said.

“I often paint eight to 12 hours a day, so I have a huge body of works.

“Living in cities I could never get inspiration.

People take an interest in each other here.”

Amanda’s husband runs a surfing company and her artwork features on a wet suit at the National Surf Museum.

Her exhibition of oil paints, pastels and charcoals features at the Qdos Gallery in Lorne for all of September.

SPORT Captain’s chance as Cats regroup for big Tiger fight

By Justin Flynn Geelong will use the pre-finals bye weekend to refresh with captain Joel Selwood a huge chance to line up in the qualifying final against Richmond.

Selwood injured his ankle during the round 20 loss to Sydney and had surgery days later.

Selwood has been given the green light to resume training and could be a miraculous inclusion for the final on 8 September.

The Cats will need to weigh up whether to risk Selwood for the Richmond game or to give him an extra one or two weeks rest depending on the result. The loser of the qualifying final gets another chance the following weekend.

Geelong director of coaching Simon Lloyd said the side would use the week off to refresh and recharge.

“It’s as much about getting all their bodies right and we’ll have a couple of solid sessions throughout the week,” Lloyd said this week. “(We’ll be) trying to simulate what Richmond will do on Friday week and also work on our

Geelong has won its past 13 encounters against the Tigers, including a round 21 victory at Simonds Stadium with a depleted side.

Geelong has also requested a match against Carlton at home next season for the first time in 21 years.

Geelong’s formal submission to the league asked for a clash against the Blues in a prime Saturday timeslot in the early part of the season at Simonds Stadium.

Premiership pressure pays off as Standfield wins best The Geelong Netball Club celebrated its best Sunday following its dual-premiership-winning season.

Goal defender Jessica Standfield won the Meany Medal for the club’s overall best and fairest.

Standfield polled 23 votes, including six best on court performances during the 18 round season while Kate Thompson came a close second on 21.

The super competitive defender applied relentless pressure to her opponents, said Netball Victoria Barwon region manager Mel Taylor.

“She reads the play extremely well which enables her to take a lot of intercepts and affect many deflections.”

Jess returned to the Victorian Netball League competition after 10 years playing domestic level competition.

She represented the Melbourne Phoenix through the 2005 and 2006 Commonwealth Bank Trophy seasons and now coaches the Torquay Tigers Premier Division team.

Defender Allie Smith, who turned 17 this season, won the best and fairest in Division One after her promotion from the under 19s.

“Allie’s timing and her ability to read the play enabled her to intercept many attacking passes, which truly showcased her athleticism,” Taylor said.

Smith made the Victorian team and the Australian squad in the under 17 division in 2016 and this year.

She also made this year’s Victorian Netball League 2017 Team of the Year in Division One. Jaimee VanLeerdam and Ellen Doyle tied for the under 19s best and fairest.

It was the first season at the Cougars for both the goalkeeper and goal shooter.

VanLeerdam impressed with her defensive smarts, using her movement and vision to closely guard the opposition shooters.

The consummate team player partnered with her co-defenders for maximum impact, Taylor said.

The versatile Doyle showed the ability to swing forward or back, but spent the majority of the season at goal shooter.

Doyle stepped in for experienced goal shooter Gabby Reinets, who suffered a season-ending injury.

“Ellen showed great maturity stepping up and becoming the starting Goal Shooter in the under 19 team,” Taylor said.

“A magnificent effort for such a young and inexperienced player.”

Both made the Victorian Netball League 2017 Team of the Year for the under 19 division.

Well out of the wind and rain ON THE BITE Chris Pitman Anglers had to contend with strong winds again over the past week.

Peri Stavropoulos sought shelter for land-based fishing on Geelong’s waterfront.

Casting soft plastics, Peri landed Australian salmon to one kilogram that gave him a run for his money on light tackle.

When the wind settled, boat anglers also found great numbers of salmon on the inner-harbour along with pinkie snapper and the odd flathead.

Clifton Springs hosted salmon in large schools, betrayed by birds working the baitfish. Squid were a viable target when the water was clear and the wind backed off.

Nearby, the Point Richards channel produced gummy shark to 6kg on pilchards.

St Leonards saw a few whiting come on the chew for anglers fishing pippie as bait.

The Bourke St area was a great location because it held numbers of fish and was not too far from the ramp if the wind picked up.

Anglers chasing big squid got their fix again at Queenscliff, with the area from the grass beds to the bight giving up bag-limit captures.

Off Shore reports slowed due to the weather but anglers who braved the conditions boated gummies to 20kg. Fresh salmon baits did the trick.

Bluefin tuna to 120kg were encountered from Portland to Port Macdonald. Trolling Skirted lures was the most effective tactic.

Freshwater fishos tangled with some impressive brown trout over 4kg at Lake Purrumbete.

Casting or trolling lures along the weed banks was the way to go, especially with longer minnow-profiles.

Closer to home, Stony Creek Reservoir was a hot spot for brown trout to just on 1kg.

Casting pink, 13.5g Tassie Devils in colour #55 was by far the most effective method, with the odd redfin taken as a bycatch.

Wurdee Boluc Reservoir kept dedicated anglers busy in the hunt for trophy trout.

Rainbows and browns to 1.5kg were banked at first or last light, with the Reliable Norries Wasabi spoon working well.

Graeme Findlay put in plenty of time at Wurdee recently, landing a well-conditioned redfin of 45.5cm while casting a hard-body lure.

Next week, any breaks in the weather should be worth fishing offshore for gummy sharks, with and birds working the surface nearby possibly an indication of bluefin tuna hanging around.

Inside the bay, Queenscliff will hold large squid for anglers fishing baited jigs down deep.
