By Casey Neill A broken window. A broken finger. A broken skull.

But not a broken community.

Dandenong North is rallying around a Victor Avenue family of five that’s reeling following a terrifying home invasion.

Silverton Cricket Club is leading a stand against violence in the community and a fundraising campaign to support Radmila and Pero.

The couple, who did not want their surname published, were watching television about 10pm on Sunday 20 August when they heard a window break.

“We just jumped and I opened the door. They were already at the door and pushing the door in,” Radmila said.

“We tried to push them out.”

There were four men, all perceived to be of African appearance and wearing hooded tops and face coverings.

During the struggle, Pero was struck to the head and fell unconscious to the floor.

He has a fractured skull.

“I started to hit them,” Radmila said.

One of her three daughters heard the commotion, found Pero surrounded by blood and started screaming.

“The tallest one jumped in and hit me with a baseball bat,” Radmila said.

They’d broken her finger.

“I got really mad. I was just hitting them.”

Pero came to and instinctively grabbed a candle holder and headed for the door.

He said his first thought as he regained consciousness was that his family had been killed while he lay on the floor.

Police arrived at the home within minutes.

“It’s always been quiet, a good neighbourhood,” Pero said.

But now they worry about their daughters.

“Sometimes I think I’m going to sell this house,” Radmila said.

“I don’t know what is going on.”

Students are suspended over Facebook bullying

By Casey Neill A Springvale school suspended four students over a bathroom bullying incident live-streamed on Facebook.

Killester College principal Leanne Di Stefano published a letter to parents on the Catholic girls school’s Facebook page on Wednesday 23 August “to inform them of an incident” that occurred the previous day.

“Misinformation has gone out suggesting that girls were barricaded by a mob of 50 students in the toilets,” she said.

Ms Di Stefano clarified that two small groups of Year 12 girls clashed on social media over the weekend and on Monday night, two girls organised a meeting with their year level co-ordinator.

“When the girls arrived at school they decided

to wait in the Year 12 toilets until the co-ordinator came to her office,” she said.

But the four other students involved realised the girls were in the toilets and went to confront them.

“Disappointingly, about 15 other Year 12 girls decided to go into the toilets to watch, one of whom decided to live stream the incident,” Ms Di Stefano said.

She said the crowd dispersed after a few minutes and the two girls under siege walked to the administration building with a staff member.

“We are very disappointed by the behaviour of the girls who were involved in the incident,” she said.

Ms Di Stefano said a number of girls were on suspension while the school worked through the issues with them and their parents.

“Furthermore, we are disappointed by the girls

who, as bystanders, failed to recognise how their behaviour contributed to the tension of the situation,” she said.

“We always tell the girls that they have a right to feel safe, happy and learn.

“Yesterday these rights were breached and two students did not feel safe.”

She said no school was immune to problems brought in by inappropriate social media use.

“Cyber and personal safety are issues that we address at school and regularly revisit,” Ms Di Stefano said.

“We acknowledge that sometimes there will be a need to educate our young people about correct behaviour and how we live out our values.

“Yesterday’s behaviour was absolutely unacceptable but it will be worked through with the students and their families.”

Aladdin’s cave of stolen property

By Casey Neill Police intercepted a Keysborough man with “an Aladdin’s cave of stolen items” inside a stolen van, a court has heard.

Nicholas Angelopoulos, 26, appeared before Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 24 August.

He’d been on a drug treatment order since last November following previous criminal activity.

Magistrate Gerard Bryant cancelled it and sentenced Angelopoulos to serve the remaining 222 days of the order in custody.

He also handed down a 12-month parole period.

He told Angelopoulos that he hoped he’d remain drug-free while in prison and complete programs to demonstrate he was “fair dinkum” about addressing his drug problems.

Magistrate Bryant heard that police intercepted Angelopoulos and two passengers in a stolen van in Dandenong North on Monday 12 May. He told police he’d borrowed the vehicle from a friend, the court heard, but it was stolen from Parkmore Shopping Centre in Keysborough on 8 May. Inside the van police found a lengthy list of items that the prosecution attempted to read out in full.

“Perhaps ‘items to the value of ’ would be more expeditious?” Magistrate Bryant interrupted.

A value was unable to be determined.

“I’m prepared to assume there was an Aladdin’s cave of stolen items found in the van,” he said.

The court also heard that Angelopoulos had burgled a home in Croydon on 10 May and another in Hampton Park the following day.

“You need to make changes to avoid spending the next decade in and out of prison,” Magistrate Bryant said.

Mr King wants the club to be a safe haven and positive influence for kids in the area.

“It’s like something’s broken and I think a positive early influence in their life is a way of fixing it,” he said.

He said he was taught respect as he was growing up. “Now the sense of community is going,” he said.

“How many people know their neighbours?

“The biggest thing is to be proactive about it, as a cricket club as a person of the community.

“If you don’t do something, nothing happens.”

The club has also been instrumental in establishing an online GoFundMe page to raise money for Pero and Radmila.

Pero won’t be able to work as a truck driver for at least a month while his skull heals.

Firefighters watch the smoldering rubbish.

Rubbish fire halts garbage truck Rubbish inside a garbage truck caught fire in Dandenong North.

The CFA has been unable to determine exactly what sparked the blaze just after 8am on Tuesday 22 August.

The driver pulled into the Dandenong Oasis pool’s car park and fire crews attended.

Two fire crews remained on the scene more than two hours later and the CFA issued a community information message stating there was

visible smoke but no immediate threat to neighbours.

Greater Dandenong Council’s Engineering Services Director Julie Reid said contractor JJ Richards owned the truck involved.

“The quick thinking actions of the driver ensured that the fire brigade were in attendance soon after and the fire was extinguished,” she said.

“There was no injury to the driver or damage to the truck.”

Correction Firefighters work to put out the blaze.

23 August 1917 Britain’s food supply Copy of handbill circulated amongst householders in Great Britain On His Majesty’s Service I wish to appeal for the immediate help of every man, woman and child in my effort to reduce the consumption of bread.

We must all eat less food, especially bread, and not be wasteful.

The enemy is trying to take our daily bread.

He is sinking our wheat ships.

If he succeeds in starving us, our soldiers will have died in vain.

In the interest of this country I call upon all to deny yourselves and loyally bridge over the anxious days between now and harvest. By strict care we can best help the men who are gallantly fighting on sea and land to achieve victory and so share the joys of peace that will follow.

29 August 1967 Life behind wattle and daub Devon Meadows - The Journal recently published a picture of a wattle and daub house at Harkaway being offered for sale by public auction, believed to be more than 100 years old and in reasonably good repair, one of the few remaining.

The Journal has now discovered another relic of the ancient at Devon Meadows built by the owners from local materials including mud and tea tree.

20 years ago 25 August 1997 Parents’ fee fight Students whose parents refuse to pay “voluntary contributions fees” at Dandenong High School will be excluded from some activities.

That was the warning in the school council circular to parents recently.

School council president, Mrs Christine Ware, said parents who did not pay the fee were disadvantaging everyone else.

“Contribution fees are not new and you will find ours compares very favourably to other schools in the region. Annual fees are kept to less than $100 a student,” she said.

“We need parents’ contributions to help pay for photocopying, extra-curricular activities and excursions.

“No-one is ever excluded from a core education activity and we are always prepared to make exceptions for families experiencing genuine hardship.”

5 years ago 27 August 2012 In review: the first episode Go Back to Where You Came From isn’t meant to be a cosy sightseeing tour.

The tension is palpable when six participants including former defence mi nister Peter Reith are dropped into two of the world’s most dangerous hot spots - Kabul in Afghanistan and Mogadishu in Somali.

In a dramatic set-up, Reith meets Rezai, an asylum seeker rescued by the Norwegian vessel Tampa.

Reith as defence minister ordered Special Forces operatives to board the Tampa.

Rezai was handcuffed and taken to Nauru.

After 13 months his application for asylum was rejected.

Ten years on Rezai has changed his name and lives at no fixed address in Kabul.

A stirred Reith says: “He’s bitterly disappointed but we don’t know all the circumstances. A lot of people were going through the system. Mistakes are made... these things happened.”

Little monkeys’ horseback route The late Jack Johnson was the author of When The Clock Strikes, a fascinating account of growing up in Dandenong, his years tending to the city’s pipes and drains as a plumber and bringing up a family with wife Frances in their beloved home in Macpherson Street.

On school holidays and Saturday mornings we would go with Murph’s dad to do the deliveries for Old Patto’s Hay and Grain Store.

We went as far as Cranbourne and Clyde and with the two-horse wagon with its iron rim wheels and a huge load it was almost a full day trip.

The single-horse pneumatic-tyred wagon pulled by Nugget, the medium draft horse, was much quicker as Nugget could get along at a steady trot.

Some Sundays we went on this wagon with Mr Murphy and a couple of his mates on rabbiting

trips with ferrets and nets, one of which to Five Ways was the most amusing.

On Saturday mornings, if by about 11.30am no deliveries had been requested, Murph and I would take the three horses up to a vast paddock at the unmade section of Anne Street, between Cleeland and Herbert streets at the back of the Dandenong High School.

This paddock was entered through a Mallee gate from the Anne Street paddock and extended to a similar section of David Street and beyond

where the Dandy North primary school is today.

There were a number of large red gums and other gums still dotted throughout the paddocks, and a number of marsh-like soaks, from which the horses drank pure water.

In later years, if we were on horseback in these areas with our cousin and one of our other mates herding and grazing cattle along these unmade roads of central Dandenong, we could always call in to the Anne Street paddock to get a drink, for us as well as for the cattle and horses.

Murph’s dad would take the lead ropes on the halter of Nugget and Charlie and tie it to the other side of the headstall like a bridle.

He would then let each of us up onto the bare, broad backs of these beautiful carthorses, where we looked about the size of a couple of monkeys.

Whichever of us was riding Nugget he would hand the lead rope of Bess.

We would head out along the driveway and

through the double timber and corrugated iron gates of what today is McLennan Lane, and along the side of the highway.

Then we’d head across Clow Street and into Cleeland Street up past the produce market.

Once we got past the bull pens of the stock market on the King Street corner, where the bitumen road became gravel, we would urge these mighty horses into a gallop.

It was just as well they knew they were going to the paddock, for with these rope halters for bridles and our size, we had about as much control over them as we would have trying to lead a large bull with a piece of Grandma’s crochet wool tied to the ring in its nose.

We must have had the balance of monkeys for we never fell or got chucked off.

The paddock we took the horses to now contains the Cleeland Secondary College and the Dandenong North Primary School.

Public success A Greater Dandenong Council officer is among the Top 50 Public Sector Women in the state.

Engineering Services Director Julie Reid said she felt “very privileged” to be included in the inaugural list.

“I think, for me, it’s an opportunity to be recognised after many years of commitment to local government,” she said.

“I’m clocking up 30 years next year.

“Local government’s been good to me and I’ve worked really hard in my career to progress up the ladder.

“I’ve put a lot into it because I’m really committed to helping the community.”

Ms Reid is responsible for delivering Greater Dandenong’s $50 million capital works program, was the project leader for the Springvale City Hall’s $7 million refurbishment and is an active member of the council’s Preventing Family Violence and Gender Equity Committee.

She said that believing in herself and being confident had been the key to success in the sector.

“Women are very capable of being able to do

these kind of roles,” she said. “I think you’ve just got to believe in yourself.

“There’s still an unconscious bias in society.

“You’ve just got to try to break through that.

“Women who do put their hand up and go for opportunities are very often successful in what they want to do.”

Ms Reid has worked in local government in the United Kingdom as well as Australia.

Davidson Recruitment produced the Top 50 Public Sector Women (Victoria) list to recognise outstanding women in leadership roles.

Ms Reid was also one of only six women to receive a scholarship for Davidson’s Leadership Acceleration Program.

She said she was looking forward to connecting with other women on the list to share ideas and opportunities.

“And I can, maybe, have a profile to give back to some of the sector as well,” she said.

She’s already been contacted about speaking engagements and wants to promote what local government has to offer and women in senior roles.

“It’s an honour to be in a group of women who are very inspirational,” she said.

Good move for free cash

Dandenong’s Good Money store celebrated its fifth anniversary on Monday 21 August.

Since opening in 2012, the Lonsdale Street site has provided nearly $3 million in safe and affordable loans to people on low incomes.

Good Shepherd Microfinance CEO Adam Mooney said a partnership between Good Shepherd Microfinance, the State Government and National Australia Bank (NAB) brought the concept to life.

“We know around 35,000 people in the Greater Dandenong area would be eligible to access the No Interest Loan Scheme (NILS) through Good Money,” he said.

“That loan could be used for vital whitegoods, medical treatment, a computer or school supplies which can make a significant difference to a person’s life.

“Good Money is a better alternative for people who are struggling to pay for things like furniture, washing machines and fridges.”

Mr Mooney said a rental contract for a $550 washing machine could cost more than $2000 over four years of repayments.

“But through NILS you don’t pay a single cent more than the purchase price,” he said.

Dandenong woman Rachel Adams is a single mother on a disability pension.

“There’s no savings,” she said.

But through Good Money she’s bought two couches, a bed, a computer, a fridge and a washing machine.

“It’s just fantastic and I hope they stay around forever,” she said.

Ms Adams said using credit cards to buy such items could land people in a debt cycle.

“I had to declare bankruptcy because I got credit cards,” she said.

“That’s how I discovered the NILS program.

“I couldn’t get any credit because I’d declared bankruptcy.

“Even to buy a second-hand washing machine it was like $250, but they break down so fast you

Police issued 1103 penalty notices during Operation Prominent, a major traffic blitz to tackle road fatalities in Greater Dandenong, Casey and Cardinia from Thursday 10 to Saturday 19 August.

Police conducted 4388 preliminary breath tests and the penalty notices issued related to speeding, alcohol, drugs, distraction, seatbelts and fatigue.

An alleged drug-driver crashed into a parked car in Noble Park during the operation on Thursday 17 August.

The driver allegedly failed a drug impairment assessment and will be charged on summons.

“We make no excuses for challenging this behaviour, pulling people over who are speeding, intercepting people who are under the influence of drugs or alcohol and prosecuting them to the full extent of the law,” Inspector Tom Nairn said.

In the region, 18 people have died on the road this year - the highest of any police division in Victoria.

Eleven of those fatalities could be attributed to poor decision making and driver behaviour, Inspector Nairn said.

“Sometimes it’s hard to talk about money but I’ve found the team really friendly.

“They provide information and referrals without any judgement.”

Police have asked for witnesses to remain at crime scenes so they can provide information to investigators.

The appeal comes as detectives call for information about an attempted robbery in Cheam Street, Dandenong North, about 7.45am on Sunday 13 August during which a 19-year-old man suffered cuts and a chipped tooth.

Dandenong Detective Sergeant Nick Lamb said a member of the public stopped to help but didn’t leave their details.

“We’re appealing for that person to come forward with any information they might have.

“If people are witnesses to these sorts of incidents and they are available to wait for police to arrive to give them their details it can help in circumstances such as this,” he said.

“One day it could be them who is the victim.”

Mt Hira College celebrated the turning of the sod for the new buildings on Monday 14 August.

The building will be two storeys high, the ground floor with two senior science rooms with separate spaces for theory and practical work, including a presentation room and staff spaces.

The first floor will get learning spaces, several group spaces for collaborative learning, two lecture rooms, staff space and amenities.

The Waverley Gardens playground has found a new home. The Mulgrave shopping centre will donate the disused equipment to the Friends of Refugees.

The Dandenong charity has become a central source of first-line relief for people seeking asylum in Melbourne’s South-East.

The playground is only four years old but made way for a custom-built kids’ play space,

so the centre offered it free of charge to a charity or community group.

Holocaust saviour author to visit

By Casey Neill “It‘s not from Toorak that the writers come. It’s from places like Dandenong.”

Tom Keneally, the award-winning author of the book behind the film Schindler’s List, should know.

He grew up in an area of Sydney not dissimilar to multicultural Greater Dandenong.

“I know that Dandenong city is a sort of cutting-edge place in Melbourne with social problems of the kind that it, in many ways, creates a creative environment for those who live there,” he said.

“I’m interested in going there for that reason.”

Tom will visit with his daughter Meg Keneally as part of the Melbourne Writers’ Festival for a free literary lunch at Dandenong Library at 12.30pm on 2 September.

“I’d just like them to see that we’re ordinary people and that it’s ordinary people who write books,” he said.

“Any mug can do it, and I’m proof of that.”

The father-daughter duo are working together on novels - and a television series - following gentleman convict detective Hugh Monsarrat and his housekeeper Hannah Mulrooney.

“When you’re writing these books ... it seems impossible that someone will pay their hardearned money to read what you wrote,” Meg said.

“I’m very grateful for all of them.

“It’s wonderful to actually meet these crazy people who buy our books face to face.

“I would love if people took away a realisation that history is more fascinating and has more juice and blood in it that, perhaps, what they were taught in school.”

She hopes they develop a desire to dig a bit deeper.

“We both feel that Australian history hasn’t yet taken the position it deserve to have in popular culture,” she said.

Meg gave America’s Wild West as an example.

“There’s no reason why our convict history couldn’t have the same resonance,” she said.

Tom said Meg and her mother were descendants from a female factory convict.

“It’s a great part of our history,” he said.

“Convicts who got a ticket of leave would ride by the female factory and choose a bride.

“They’d see all these girls paraded before them.”

Meg has her own book coming out next July, a fiction story called Fled based on First Fleet convict Mary Bryant.

On writing together, Tom said they were “temperamentally similar”.

“Neither of us are the kind that would die in a ditch for our favourite sentence,” he said.

“We out the plot together, then Meg does most of the writing of the first draft using the charac-

ters I invented some time ago. Then we collaborate from then on.”

Meg said: “Initially we thought we’d write alternating chapters and dad had done a few chapters when he broached the idea with me.”

Tom handed them to Meg so she could inject her voice into them.

“I didn’t do that because I didn’t feel I had the right,” she said.

“I felt I was finger-painting over a Da Vinci.”

Their agent said the chapters featured Tom’s distinct voice with something else humming away underneath.

“She suggested I write from scratch and bring

dad back in later in the process,” she said.

Iraq-born writer, director, comedian and spoken word artist Osamah Sami will share his life experience and love of writing at Dandenong Library at 11am on Friday 1 September as part of the Melbourne Writers’ Festival.

Several artists will share their thoughts, ideas and stories on what comes after today at an evening of spoken word at Dandenong’s Walker Street Gallery and Arts Centre at 6.30pm on Saturday 2 September.

Children speak out to shape the city’s future

By Casey Neill Greater Dandenong students relished the chance to shape their community and collaborate with other kids.

About 13 schools participated in the Greater Dandenong Children’s Forum at the Dandenong Civic Centre on Wednesday 23 August.

Yarraman Oaks Primary School student wellbeing co-ordinator Elissa Sewell said a facilitator rolled in on roller skates to start the day.

“When the kids saw her...” she said, “she had glitter on her face. Straight away the kids were engaged.”

Ms Sewell said students spoke about which playgrounds they used, which ones they didn’t, and what they’d like to see in them.

They suggested extra lighting on some of the bike paths “because in winter when it gets dark so early they feel like they can’t use those facilities”.

“They loved the fact that the council wanted to hear what they thought,” Ms Sewell said.

The students told the council that they’d like to see more activities in Keysborough and Noble Park and got their picture taken with Mayor Jim Memeti.

“One of the activities was with bubbles.

From straws and pipe cleaners they made these prisms and cubes and put them in bubbles,” she said.

Student Kayla said she got to express her ideas and make friends while working together to make a map and 3D structures.

“It was amazing that my voice got to be heard and be shaped into ideas,” she said.

“The Children’s Forum was a meeting that allowed children’s voices to be heard and have an impact.”

Marching to a different Confederate drum I have been interested in the recent upheaval in the southern states of America and especially the attempts to erase history.

As a tutor of history, I am rather amazed at comments by the ABC when the question of the removal of statues depicting Confederate soldiers be removed and their statement that individuals like General E. Lee were rebels and therefore had no right to be recognized when compared to the founding fathers.

Now in that case were not these founding fathers also rebels in that they broke from England. The rhetoric coming from those, including the ABC, is that Lee and his fellow generals were some sort of monsters.

Interesting to note that the Union commander Ulysses S. Grant had great respect for Lee and in the surrender of the Confederate forces told Lee to keep his sword because he considered him a ‘gallant and noble opponent’.

It is interesting to note that those who want to erase history, firstly by the removal and possible destruction of statues they disagree with, are doing the same as the very symbol they loath.

What will be next, the burning of every book that features the history of the Civil War, the removal of any museum that features any display of Confederate literature or exhibits or perhaps going further and seeking any individual whose distant relatives fought for the South for there would be no doubt that many in this area would have had relatives in the past that would have marched with Lee. Too often do we step aside and let screaming minorities push their agenda onto the majority and anybody that refuses to worship them is immediately called a racists.

The American Civil War is part of American history and to render it as a myth or to erase it from history to please a few turns a country that claims to be a democracy into a minority dictatorship.

Shoppers pay for school studio

By Casey Neill Keysborough shoppers helped Emerson School to set up its own television studio.

Parkmore Shopping Centre manager Olga Lekovic presented $2000 to Emerson School in Dandenong on Friday 18 August.

The grant was part of the $10,000 School Rewards competition, which ran at Parkmore for five weeks.

Customers collected points for a local school each time they made a purchase in the centre.

Keysborough’s Resurrection Primary School collected the most points and received $5000 and $3000 went to second-placed Dingley Primary School.

Emerson was in third place.

Principal Dianne Wright said the money would set up a television studio to broadcast between the school’s two campuses shows that students design and present.

“Unfortunately, we sometimes have to cancel our Friday assemblies due to poor weather,” she said.

“A facility like this will enable us to broadcast the assembly to staff and students on the other campus.”

Ms Wright said the school’s VCAL performing arts and digital studies classes would also benefit from the facilities.

“It is an exciting opportunity to further de-

The ATO is reminding taxpayers that it’s paying close attention to rental properties located in popular holiday destinations around Australia.

Assistant Commissioner Kath Anderson said that last year the ATO identified a large number of mistakes with deductions for rental properties, particularly with regards to holiday homes.

“We’ve noticed some people are claiming deductions for holiday homes even where the property is not genuinely being rented out, or genuinely available for rent,” Ms Anderson said.

“There’s no problem with people using their rental property for their holiday, but holiday home owners need to remember they can only claim tax deductions for expenses made during a period when the home is rented out or genuinely available for rent.”

Property owners also need to understand that if they rent their property at a discounted rate, or ‘mates’ rates’ they can only claim deductions equal to the amount of rent charged.

Ms Anderson said the ATO is focused on using data to identify errors.

“Property owners should be aware that incorrect rental property claims will not go unnoticed.

Technology enhancements and extensive use of data is allowing us to identify incorrect or suspicious claims. We also have a good idea of the locations likely to be used for holiday homes.”

Ms Anderson said that all rental property owners, particular those who rent out holiday homes, should always double-check their claims before lodging their tax return, and follow a couple of simple rules.

“Firstly, make sure that you declare all rental income and only claim deductions for periods that the property is rented or was genuinely available for rent.”

“Secondly, make sure you have accurate records of expenses, and strong evidence of the property being rented or genuinely available for rent at market rates.

“Advertising through a real-estate agent or an online site is not always enough evidence to demonstrate that a property is genuinely available for rent.”

Sensory aid to calm students

By Casey Neill A multi-sensory room is easing anxiety and lifting learning at Wallarano Primary School.

The Noble Park school officially opened the space on Friday 18 August with representatives from Club Noble and Dingley Village Bendigo Bank.

Both donated $10,000 towards the $70,000 room late last year.

“We’re very thankful for the support,” principal Gail Doney said.

“The school put a lot of money towards it as well.

“Children who have gone in there who have been feeling stressed and anxious have returned to the classroom much more settled and got on with their work.”

Ms Doney said the room was the idea of assistant principal and integration leader Carolyn Frank.

It features lighting and textures designed to calm and focus children.

“In this day and age where depression and anxiety is such a big thing and leading to terrible stats for young people, it’s really important that they learn to deal with difficult times and face challenges,” Ms Doney said.

“It’s about knowing when you need to calm down and how to do it.

“I think it’s a really important life skill.”

Ms Doney said the school had about 43 students with disabilities.

“The whole school has a passion for making sure children with disabilities are included in schools,” she said.

She said one child with special needs would have a meltdown when they got home from school.

Spending the last 10 minutes of each school day in the room has eliminated the outbursts.

“It’s not used for huge lengths of time,” she said.

“It’s meant to calm children who are feeling anxious.”

Some of the school’s therapists hold sessions in there, too.

“It’s getting quite a lot of use,” Ms Doney said.

SPORT Amy rides rising tide of talent

By Nick Creely When discussing the emerging basketball talent coming out of Victoria, chances are Narre Warren South and Dandenong Rangers rising star Amy Baum’s name will pop up.

The 17-year-old, who attends the highly regarded Rowville Sports Academy and has been around the Dandenong Rangers’ junior sides for almost a decade, is starting to make waves as she continues her emergence into the professional ranks.

In what has been a strong 2017 - which has also included representing the School Sports Victoria team in the recent National Champions in Canberra - Baum has knocked every challenge out of the park.

“I’ve just come back from Nationals and that was a big one but really enjoyable, and throughout the season I’ve been playing Big V with Dandenong Rangers and that season finished in the semis when we got beat,” she said.

“It was good representing Victoria for the first time - it was a new experience but the girls were all great - we finished fourth which is a bit disappointing but it was good for us.”

Her Big V season for Dandenong’s Youth Championship Women side was simply stunning, earning her both internal and external recognition from around the state.

She was nominated for three awards - the Rising Star, the MVP and the Defensive Player of the Year - in a season where she finished fifth in assists (70) and shot at an incredible three point percentage of 40.58 per cent (second in the competition), meaning she is well rounded around the court and able to play with consistency and efficiency.

Amy Baum continues to take the basketball world by storm. 171956 included a fantastic 23-point, five rebound match against the Rush back in May as well as an 11-assist performance against the Tigers in early June.

And she is full of praise for the Rangers and their nurturing environment and hopes to one day be able to play some WNBL with Dandenong

“It’s a very good environment and the coaches, staff and players are all welcoming and it’s a very good culture,” she said.

Speaking out, Dandenong announces coach team

By Nick Creely The Dandenong Cricket Club has announced its completed coaching structure for season 2017/18.

The men’s panel remains unchanged with Head Coach Nick Speak excited to again take the reins for the Panthers.

Three of the four men’s grades saw finals action in 2016/17 and the club is confident that Speak can lead the group to an extension of this with the addition of some silverware - in 2017/18.

He is once again joined by assistants Paul Boraston, Brett Forsyth, Mark Boraston and Craig Hillard.

The 2017/18 season will be the first time that women don the blue and red at Shepley after the recent merger with the Dandenong Women’s Cricket Club.

The exciting new venture is matched with an equally exciting coaching panel which sees former Southern Stars player and coach Cathryn Fitzpatrick return alongside former VicSpirit selector and player Megan Pauwels and new recruit Vince Cameron.

Fitzpatrick will lead the panel as Director of Coaching - Female Programs while Cameron and Pauwels take on Assistant Coach roles.

The trio will rotate training and game-day duties ensuring that the playing group has access to the unique experience and insights that each of the panel offers.

Cameron, who is new to Premier Cricket, comes from a background in the health and wellness sector and has most recently been involved at St Paul’s Cricket Club in Melbourne’s South East.

“We are very excited at the breadth of knowledge and experience that this panel offers and the opportunity it will present for our players,” Female Cricket Manager Sarah Elliott said.

“We have a lot of young talent coming through our ranks and we believe we have the coaching mix right to ensure we give them the best opportunity to reach their potential.”

This follows news that the Panthers will also have five players in Cricket Victoria’s U19 trial squads.

Edward Newman, Lachy MacCorquodale and Matt Wetering form part of the Metro squad while Kim Drew and Koby Brann are in the Country squad.

and has taken elements of another sport she played as a junior into her game now.

“I want to be known as a player that works hard, fights for loose balls and being a one percenter player,” she said.

“My parents got me into it (basketball) - they played cricket and softball but got me into the sport.

“I used to play football with the Berwick juniors - the agility from footy and basketball probably clashed - it also helped my competiveness in basketball now.”

With her sights set firmly onto the future, Baum plans on experiencing life as a US College student, as she creeps one step closer to her basketball dreams.

“Hopefully that’s the plan - I’ve been offered a scholarship by Hawaii Pacific University so I’m thinking about it,” she said.

Amy explained that the lure of college life is exciting and the next phase of her impressive development.

“I want a new experience and playing a different style of basketball - getting to experience a new lifestyle and basketball’s allowing me to see other places around the world.

“I went in Year 10 with Rowville on a basketball trip to see some colleges and a play a few teams - it was absolutely amazing and the first time overseas for me, so would love to do it again.”

She credits her family, her coaches and in particular her school, Rowville, for her rise in the basketball ranks.

“Dean Kinsman’s (Rowville Sports Academy) had a massive part in helping me with my basketball and the school’s been great.

“Everyone is always supporting you there,” she said.

Junior cricket gets a new look

The Dandenong District Cricket Association (DDCA) has changed the way junior cricket will look in 2017/18 after adopting a number of changes for its Under-11 teams.

Based off the 2017 Junior Pathway by Cricket Australia, which aims to deliver a faster and more enjoyable game for juniors to keep engaged in cricket, the DDCA has decided now is the time to make the change.

Matches will now be limited to just 20 overs maximum per team to be completed within two hours, each team will field just seven players, the pitch will be shortened to 16 metres and the boundaries will be cut to a maximum of just 40 metres.

The radical changes have been made for a variety of reasons.

Firstly, it is believed that juniors will be able to learn the game and skills better and therefore be better equipped to learn the adult game.

Secondly, the shortening of the pitches and boundaries will ensure the game moves quicker but also allows them to learn techniques and develop their skills more proficiently when they enter the adult version.

Thirdly, it is believed kids will become more engaged with modified rules and actually find more enjoyment out of such things as hitting fours and sixes as opposed to a full length ground where they can’t.

At this stage, the Cricket Australia Junior Pathway is not mandatory for associations around the country, but it is believed that within three to four years most junior associations will adopt these rules to ensure children are getting the best possible chance to succeed in the sport.

Burras’ game face on for finals

By Nick Creely With a glint in their eyes for the past 10 months, Keysborough’s players will enter this weekend’s finals series off the culmination of perseverance, talent and a resolve to win at all costs.

The Burras - who became one of the dominant figures in Southern Footy’s Division 2 this season after an underwhelming 2016 - now have the chance to test their mettle in a qualifying final against Caulfield this Saturday at Meade Reserve, Clayton.

Burras coach Matt Ferguson is raring to get into the action and is confident his side can lift in the biggest month of the football calendar.

“It’s been a lot of hard work going back last October to now get to a point where we are ready to compete for a finals series,” he said.

“We’ve probably had quarters - not games - where we’ve been exceptional and put the opposition away - we are playing in patches at the moment and we’re hoping we can put together a more consistent four quarters when finals do come.”

The last time the Burras met the Bears was back in Round 16 when they won away from home by 19 points in harsh conditions - they also won narrowly back in Round 5.

Ferguson said his group had definitely learnt lessons about how the Bears play and hopes his side can replicate their recent successes against them.

“That was a tough day for everyone (the Round 16 win), it was a scrappy and windy day.

“We made some changes during that game - in particular putting Chris Bryan in the ruck, allowing us to get control of the middle - and I think we defended really well against a quality team.

“It’s always a hard and contested game against them (Caulfield) and that’s where it starts and ends in the clearances - whoever does better in the clearances will most likely win the game.

“They’ve got the number one defence in

“You need to prepare the players - particularly the guys that haven’t played finals - and ensure

they are fully aware of what to expect and make sure they don’t play the game before they run out there, which is always a danger.

“We’ve got a lot of experience in the club who have won premierships, so we think they’ll help with that.”

Endeavour runs through the Hills

By Nick Creely JOURNAL FOOTBALL REVIEW SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 2 - ROUND 20 An attacking masterclass by Keysborough against East Brighton on Saturday has the Burras primed for a tilt at the flag when this week’s finals begin.

In the final home-and-away clash of the season, the Burras gained some valuable momentum in the dominant 14.10(94) to 24.12(156) win.

With key lynchpins Timmy Werner (eight goals) and Chris Bryan putting on an absolute clinic, the Burras were never challenged when they burst out to a 19-point quarter time lead.

The Burras will face Caulfield in a massive qualifying final on Saturday at Clayton’s Meade Reserve.

Springvale Districts, meanwhile, ended their tough season on a high with a tight win over Skye, 8.12(60) to 10.7(67).

After leading comfortably for most of the day, the Demons almost squandered its handy lead in a tense last quarter but just held on to claim the consolation four points.

The Demons finished with a 6-12 record.

DIVISION 3 - QUALIFYING FINAL From the very beginning of Saturday’s match against Ashwood, Endeavour Hills seemed just that one step ahead.

In the tight 6.6(42) to 9.9(63) thriller at Keysborough Reserve, the Eagles have booked a semifinal berth.

After kicking the first goal of the match only a minute into the game, the Eagles’ tough and tenacious style meant it was never going to be threatened.

With the likes of star midfielder Daniel Batson and Shaun Richards looking ominous early, the Eagles set the game up with a brilliant four goal to one opening term, before ensuring defensively they would be impenetrable.

Ashwood refused to go away and were desperate to not go into their shells, but the Eagles never

looked like surrendering their precious lead - and they didn’t, running out comfortable winners and sending a warning to premiership favourite Hallam.

The Eagles will face the Hawks in this week’s semi at Jack Barker Oval, in what will be a tantalising match up.

SEABL REVIEW SOUTH CONFERENCE FINAL The Dandenong Rangers Men pulled off an incredible overtime win over Ballarat at MARS Stadium to claim the South Conference title on Saturday night.

In front of a packed crowd at Ballarat, a truly tight tussle between the two heavyweights saw nothing separate them 26 apiece at quarter time.

The Rangers got their shooting game up and going in the second quarter to jump ahead by four-points at the main break, as they looked to be stamping their dominance over the contest.

A hot-shooting Miners’ side then made life difficult for the Rangers, and with the home crowd spurring on every rebound and field goal made, the momentum was shifting drastically.

The Miners strode out to a commanding 62-52 lead at the final change, with the Rangers needing to defy the odds to claim the title.
