Win on fencing fail A Grovedale woman has won a two-year legal battle with a local company after it built a “defective” fence around her property.

The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal last week ordered Nitabow Holdings Pty Ltd,

trading as Belmont Fencing, to pay $9455.70 to Katrina Alford.

“I’m just exhausted and drained - there are no celebrations,” Ms Alford told the Indy this week.

“All that money will go to rectification.”

Call to bring finals home

By Mandy Oakham Geelong football fans are manning up to prove they will bleed blue and white for their beloved cats.

Supporters are angry with a claim from the AFL Fans Association (AFLFA) that all finals should be played at venues that are large enough to cater for all fans who want to attend.

The AFLFA believes that if Geelong plays Richmond, the game must be held at the MCG. “It is imperative that as many fans as possible get to see their teams play in the finals,” association president Gerry Eeman said.

Cat Man, aka Troy West, was leading the charge for a home final.

“It is our bloody home ground, it is our bloody fans and where is the incentive to achieve second on the ladder if we can’t get a home ground final,” Cat Man hissed.

“If we happen to win on Saturday then whoever we are playing will just have to suck it up like Richmond did.

“Do they make Adelaide come over and play at the MCG? What about the teams in the West do we make them come over and play at the MCG?” The president of the Geelong Football Club cheer squad John Van Lith told the Indy that fans were 100 per cent behind their club and their players in their calls for the right to a home

Other fans are not so sure about a home final.

Fan Stephanie King posted on the Indy Facebook page: “I’m a Geelong fan, but for both teams fans it should be at the MCG.” Another supporter Sarah Rakusz posted: “Of course it should be at the MCG - the crowd will be electric.”

Cats coach Chris Scott has said his club will be OK with playing a home final at the MCG as long as the AFL concedes it “is putting cash ahead of fairness and integrity”.

Club president Colin Carter has slammed the AFL’s efforts to take home games away from the Cats.

“We think (come finals) the AFL is in a position where there are, basically, two rules - one set of rules that apply to some teams in the competition and another set of rules that apply to others.”

Hundreds of Geelong fans have responded to a local online campaign to “bring Gazza back home” by leaving their headlights on all day this Saturday as a show of support for the potential return of Ablett to the club in 2018.

Number one Cat fan Troy West has joined the campaign which has been launched by Drysdale shop Surf Junction.

Owner of the shop Naomi Pattern, who credits her partner Gavin with the idea for the head lights campaign, is a passionate Cats supporter.

Cat Man said he, like many Geelong fans, was torn as to whether Gaz should return home.

“Of course I am like all the other romantics who would love to see Gazza back home and lining up with Dangerfield and Selwood and then there is the other side of the story like is he too old, is he too injured?”

Plans firm as State, City become partners in pedalling

By Mandy Oakham Geelong cyclists are wheely, wheely happy about a new $1.4 million facility which will provide a new home base for the region’s cycling activities.

Construction is about to start on a two-storey, cycling pavilion at the Geelong Criterium Circuit site in Barwon Heads Road, Belmont.

The Home for Cycling Regional Pavilion is being developed by the City of Greater Geelong and the Geelong Cycling Club, in partnership with the Victorian Government.

Geelong Cycling Club President John Burtt said that the new facility would bring Geelong cycling into the 21st century.

“We believe completion of the facility will signal a further surge in regional interest in cycling, both competitively and recreationally,” Mr Burtt said.

“We believe the provision of toilets, showers and new changing rooms within the pavilion will also signal a dramatic rise of female participation in the sport, competitively and recreationally.”

Mr Burtt said that the pavilion could become a perfect site to showcase the club’s extensive collection of memorabilia.

“The Geelong Cycling Club has a fascinating history going back well over 100 years and I think the exhibition of this collection will become a major attraction in itself,” he said.

“Further down the track, the club will be looking to develop a new velodrome - something the Geelong region sorely needs.”

Funding for the $1.4 million project is coming from the City of Greater Geelong ($934,000) and the Victorian Government ($466,000), with completion scheduled for January 2018.

In Brief Citizens step in A registered sex offender was returned to police custody in a dramatic citizen’s arrest in Norlane on Wednesday.

The citizens arrested and held the wanted sex offender on Forster Street until police arrived soon after 9am.

Police thanked the locals for their assistance in arresting the 25-year-old.

Police released images of the man on Tuesday after he failed to disclose his new address.

Police believed he may have been living under a false identity and did not have access to a phone or car.

Fired Up Norlane pensioner Ivan Edwards has pleaded guilty to arson in Geelong County Court after torching a Pakington Street ATM last year.

Security footage showed the then-72-yearold dousing the ANZ ATM with petrol before setting it on fire at 2.30am on 28 March 2016.

It’s a date Geelong City will be sticking to 26 January as the date for its Australia Day citizenship ceremonies.

City of Greater Geelong chief executive officer Kelvin Spiller confirmed this week that the council would continue to observe the holiday.

The lions, the guardians of our local democracy on the footsteps of City Hall, have had a spruce up.

That’s good news for the lions but what Double Take wants to know is where are these lions from?

If we have learnt nothing from the past few months from watching the antics in the Big House in Canberra is that we have to check the origins of everything, and everyone, who comes in contact with our sacred democratic institutions.

We are facing upcoming elections in Geelong.

What steps are we going to take to stop incomers, scheming foreign legionnaires, from taking up positions in our very own little slice of democracy here in our city by the bay?

We need to play our part in the Great Ineligibility War unless we want to end up with our very own Nick XenaPoms and Baaarnaby Joyces.

And just in case anyone was thinking that it is a difficult form to fill in before you run for a

seat in the Big House just a reminder it consists of seven questions and a declaration that one has absolutely no allegiance or adherence to a foreign power. Not rocket science, me thinks!

They are running local workshops for would-be councillors and these should be the forums in which we starting the big Vet, that is, the big checking process.

The hard questions must be asked in these workshops. Where were any potential councillors born? Where were their parents born? Where were their grandparents born?

Were they all safely born within the 3220 postcode?

Have any of these people every passed through the rival Borough of Queenscliffe? Is it possible that the mother of a future councillor was so entranced with the seaside ambience and Victorian architecture of the borough that their loyalties may have been swayed?

Is it possible that this mother may have tarried too long at the Espy pub and decided to

take out residency, ensuring that the first allegiance of any future offspring would be to that local’s front bar?

Let’s not forget that Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark was actually denied entry to a Brisbane pub because he didn’t have a copy of the piece of paper that verified he was married to an authentic, bonza, ripper, true blue, dinky di, Aussie sheila.

Never thought I would agree with anything coming out of North Korea but the words of the foreign ministry seem apt when referring to the “political immaturity” of the Australian political scene.

This week we also heard that it was time that this “politically immature” country started a space program. Maybe that’s the answer. If we could manage to get it up as it were and shoot a full parliamentary load of our pollie plonkers into space, then they would all be aliens and problem solved.

VCAT orders repairs and repayment over failed fencing From page 1 A VBA building inspector investigated the site in April 2016 and found twisted and warped pickets and that the builder did not use appropriate nails.

The report also found faults to the front sliding gate, loose palings, poor fencing structure and that the builder attached the fence to an existing fence, which had loose or rotten posts.

Ms Alford encouraged residents to take on building companies if they suspected faulty work.

“The building boom is so strong in Geelong that it enables companies to just move on to the

next job. They assume most people won’t seek legal redress.”

In February VCAT ordered the company to repair the defects listed in the VBA report, to install a 1.4m front pedestrian gate detailed in the fence plan, and to refund $495 that Ms Alford erroneously overpaid.

In its latest judgement, VCAT found that the company failed to comply with the order and ordered it to pay Ms Alford $9455.

Ms Alford said her position as a senior researcher at the University of Melbourne helped her navigate the “stringent and protracted” legal process.

“One still needs a very high order of skill

against companies to get up an application to VCAT. Most people would need help but you shouldn’t need extensive tertiary qualifications.”

Belmont Fencing owner Tony Kelly said his company would abide by the ruling.

“We didn’t agree with all of the outcomes of the VBA report,” he said.

Mr Kelly described the judgement as rare for the company.

“This one outcome doesn’t define what we do,” he said.

“We’ve been in business a long time for a reason. I’ve been in small business in Geelong for 28 years and this would be the first result of this kind in that time for us.”

State warns: ‘We'll keep an eye on elected council’

By Luke Voogt The State Government plans to monitor Geelong’s new council are “a massive vote of no confidence” in the city’s residents, according to local MP Simon Ramsay.

“It shows total disrespect for both those who will be elected to the council and to the citizens of Greater Geelong,” the Western Victoria MP said.

Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins announced on Wednesday that the government would appoint two “municipal monitors” to assist Geelong’s “transition” to a new council following the October elections.

“Ultimately the people of Geelong have the power to elect their new council and the monitors will be in place to help ensure the council remains on track,” she said.

But Mr Ramsay said the plans unfairly targeted the “unsuspecting” Geelong residents “who will bravely dare to put (themselves) up for election”.

Ms Hutchins “pre-empting the lawful outcome of elections” by appointing monitors to oversee the conduct of councillors was “bizarre”, he said.

“This threatens to be back-door external administration of the council until 2020.”

But Ms Hutchins said the monitors would help the new council “get on its feet and give ratepayers greater confidence in its future direction”.

“It’s just another way that we’re working to give Geelong the council it needs and deserves.”

She added that monitors would ensure the new council would improve governance processes - recommended by the Commission of Inquiry.

The Commission of Inquiry labelled City Hall “dysfunctional” and noted “an entrenched

The Indy reported in January that the State -appointed Complaint Review Panel, led by Susan Halliday, had resolved 55 complaints resulting in four substantiated cases of bullying in an organisation of 2700 people.

The panel had resolved no further cases since, the Indy revealed last week.

Council hopeful and sacked councillor Ron Nelson described the appointment of as a waste of money.

“I’m not sure why she’s assuming the new council needs monitoring,” he said.

SCATHING: Local MP Simon Ramsay has described plans to appoint two monitors as a vote of no confidence.

“They are pre-empting something that hasn’t happened.”

Mr Nelson said he had not been investigated for bullying and would be happy for the monitors to investigate him.

But he was unsure if the monitors would be “keeping an eye” on councillors or council employees.

“Are they saying the City employees aren’t doing their job?” he said.

“The CEO is there being paid $400,000 to ensure the employees at Geelong council are doing what they’re supposed to do.”

Deakin’s warning on robot invasion

By Mandy Oakham Danger Will Robinson: an emergency warning has been issued that a rogue robot will be rampaging in the Geelong area this coming Sunday.

Anyone planning to visit the Waurn Ponds campus of Deakin for their upcoming open day should be alert and alarmed.

Forensic scientists of the future are being called on to save the Deakin campus from the grips of the rogue robot, Pixel, who will be intent on destroying the university’s technology and innovation laboratories this weekend.

Pixel’s dastardly ROGUE: Pixel the robot set to invade open day 172092 plot involves locking himself in the high-voltage laboratory at Deakin’s Centre for Advanced Design in Engineering Training at the Waurn Ponds campus, and then wreaking carnage.

The challenge for budding scientists will be available to all prospective students at Deakin’s Open Day this Sunday, and they will have three minutes only to save the campus, if not the world.

Using virtual reality, the Pixel’s Escape Challenge, requires participants to wear headsets while following the robot around the campus, in an attempt to catch him and return him to the School of IT. Pixel’s whereabouts will be shown via a series of CCTV images of him in various Deakin facilities including the Deakin Newsroom, Deakin Telstra Trading Room and finally cracking his head in the Deakin Clinical Simulation Centre.

Open day at Geelong’s Waurn Ponds and Waterfront campuses will be underway this Sunday 27 August, from 9am to 4pm.

The old agonies of alcohol abuse

By Luke Voogt When Mary* stabbed her husband in a drunken blackout in 1982, it ended her drinking for good.

“I’m very lucky that I didn’t kill him,” the 78-year-old said.

The Bellarine woman joined two other recovered addicts calling for affordable rehabilitation in Geelong.

In the mid-’80s she was a national manager of large retail organisation and “daily drunk” who was “containing” her life.

“All of a sudden... alcohol turned on me when I wasn’t looking and I became very violent.”

Mary lasted six months in Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) before succumbing again. Eighteen months later she stabbed her then-husband in the shoulder.

She returned to AA and after 12 months of sobriety attempted suicide “stone cold sober”.

But when she entered an intensive private rehab in Melbourne she found out “who I was”. She now helps released prisoners.

“I’ve had a life beyond my wildest dreams and I want to give it back,” the great grandmother said.

Mary said many rehabs in Geelong from her “early days of sobriety” were “gone”.

Ocean Grove’s Crystal*, 41, saved herself by entering a Melbourne rehab clinic four years ago.

She had lost nearly every job she had but was still holding onto her partner and her life. Serious assault charges when she was younger didn’t stop her binge drinking.

“That’s the insanity of the disease, I guess,” she said.

But a month after she started taking ice she decided she “didn’t want to die”.

For Crystal only abstinence worked, not controlled drinking or harm minimisation.

“Those things don’t work if you’re a true alcoholic or addict,” she said.

A counsellor at the centre, another former alcoholic, “broke” her when she “badly needed it”. She now has an 18-month-old daughter and

A rehab business has failed to win funding for an “innovative” private-public clinic from the State Government.

Habitat Therapeutics director Jim Tatlock met with representatives from the Department of Health and Human Services to discuss the “desperate” need for another local clinic.

“They said there is no money for it at the moment,” he said.

Mr Tatlock proposed a private venture subsidised by the government, following a model similar to some aged care homes.

Earlier this year the State Government announced $9.7 million for three rehabilitation facilities, including one in the Barwon region.

“Even if the whole amount was allocated to Geelong, that would be stretching it,” Mr Tatlock said.

“This proposal will deliver very little to the Geelong and Melbourne communities and not for several years.”

The State Government was committed to rolling out its “record investment” in harm minimisation throughout Victoria, a spokesperson said.

But Mr Tatlock said harm minimisation was ineffective for the majority of addicts in his experience.

“It might buy them some time. At times it can be ‘harm min to the max’.”

The Indy spoke to three recovered addicts this week who all stressed the effectiveness of intense, abstinence-based rehab compared to harm minimisation.

Rehab manager Warren Holland added that many of Habitat’s clients had contacted the company after participating in harm minimisation programs.

THE GATE FEE DEPENDS ON THE CONTENT OF THE LOAD For example, scrap metal and excess recyclables can be dropped off free of charge, so if whitegoods and cardboard are separated in the load and unloaded at the appropriate recycling area – these are not included in the fee.

THE WEIGHT OF THE LOAD ALSO AFFECTS THE FEE The Geelong Resource Recovery Centre has a three tonne gross limit for access to the site.

At the Drysdale Resource Recovery Centre the amount charged for a small truckload of waste is determined by its weight. So a truckload of bricks and rubble is going to weigh – and therefore cost – much more than a truckload of tree branches.

LOCAL GOVERNMENT ACT 1989 The Council of the City of Greater Geelong (“the Council”), acting under Clause 3 of Schedule 10 to the Local Government Act 1989 (“the Act”), proposes to discontinue parts of unmade roads comprising an area of approximately 2,750m2 being parts of those roads set out on LP 13379 known as Bedford, Farnborough, Aberdare, Halifax, Luton, Leeds and Stockton Streets. PUBLIC NOTICE MOSQUITO MANAGEMENT BEGINS FOR 2017-18 The City has begun monitoring mosquito activity for the 2017-18 breeding season. Due to recent mild temperatures and winter rains, higher than average mosquito levels are expected this spring. Geelong has the largest mosquito management program in Victoria.

Our program includes extensive monitoring and treatment of mosquito breeding areas, including the coastal wetlands on the Bellarine Peninsula.

Mosquitoes are targeted in their larval stage to prevent adult mosquitoes from emerging.

Ground and aerial based treatments occur as new larvae develop in the breeding sites.

Mosquito levels are also monitored by setting traps in residential areas. The products we use to control mosquitoes are larvicides called Bacillus thuringiensis isralensis (Bti) and s-Methoprene. These products only affect mosquito larvae. People, other animals, and the general environment are not adversely affected by the aerial treatments.

The search is on for the mystery lotto winner who snared $830,431.50 after buying a ticket in Corio.

Officials have yet to track down the division one winner who purchased their winning ticket from Corio Village Lotto.

The division one winning ticket was registered to a Tatts Card but the contact details of the winner were incomplete meaning officials had no way of contacting them.

COUP: The Royal Geelong Yacht Club has secured another championship which will see Fireball class yachts return to Corio Bay.

The Royal Geelong Yacht Club has won its bid to host the prestigious Fireball World Titles in 2022, bringing a potential $1 million to the city.

Immediate past commodore Chris Williams said the championship would attract 150 competitors to Geelong and “deliver almost $1m” in economic benefits.

“This is another great win for the club and another event that will put Geelong on the world stage.”

As many as 50 international sailors would join competitors from across Australia for the Geelong event in February 2022, Mr Williams announced this week.

The two-person ‘off the beach’ racing series has only run in Australia six times since inception in 1966 and last came to the country in 2012.

The club had already secured the Fireball National Championships in 2019. It was in the running to win the 49er/NACRA World Titles in

January, 2020, and the Laser Masters World Titles in March, 2020.

If the yacht club won all three international championships, they could bring more than 700 visitors and an estimated $3.7m to Geelong, Mr Williams said.

“We’ve recently been awarded the title of Victoria’s Yacht Club of the Year.

“Winning the Fireball Worlds will certainly help to cement Geelong’s strong reputation as a top destination for world-class sailing action.

“We are genuinely delighted that we’ve edged out bidders from across the globe to bring this event to Geelong.”

Chris Payne of the Australian Fireballs Association welcomed the win as a coup for Geelong.

“There’s no doubt that the Fireball sailors love racing at Geelong and we know that unique sailing conditions there very much contributed to it winning the bid,” he said.

‘Shelter’ needed for older women

By Luke Voogt A north Geelong club is searching “as quickly as possible” for shelter for the fastest-growing group of homeless people - older women.

But after six months the Corio Norlane Lions Club has yet to find property to fill the “desperate” need, secretary Richard Walter said.

“We’ve looked at some rental properties, one in Corio and three in Norlane,” he said.

“They got snapped up pretty quickly.”

The club was seeking a property to house five homeless women aged over 50, Mr Walter said.

“We’ve got funds set aside that will definitely cover (the lease for) nine months.”

The latest Australian Institute of Health and Welfare data in 2016 showed older women was the fastest-growing demographic of homeless people during the past five years.

“There is nothing in Geelong for that age group,” Mr Walter said.

The club had approached UnitingCare and Salvos Connect with the proposal, but neither organisation had properties to spare, he said.

“They think what we’re trying to do is a fantastic idea but they don’t have anything to offer us.

“If you talk with Salvos Connect they will tell you that a lot of people are turned away each week.”

The lack of availability in the north Geelong rental market made finding suitable property difficult, Mr Walter said.

The club required an approval from a majority of members before signing a lease which delayed its ability to find a property quickly, he added.

“It’s a matter of finding an owner who is community-minded and understands what we are trying to do.”

But Mr Walter said the club needed to expand its efforts.

“We’ve seen the amount of people in need.”

Mr Walter said the club would cover insurance for the property and would station volunteers there at all times.

He understood the stigma surrounding the homeless could discourage landlords.

“But they’re pretty much the same as you and me,” he said.

“They’ve just fallen on tough times.”

The club’s recent purchase of its Norlane op shop gave Mr Walter hope for the project.

“If it works out we would look at possibly buying a property of our own to support this,” he said.

Smart material is so damned tough

By Mandy Oakham Imagine a dam built of a material 200 times stronger than steel which would also be able to tell a computer if a crack could soon appear.

This magical new material, graphene, will be manufactured at a new site in North Geelong by Imagine Intelligent Materials (IIM) which was opened this week by Assistant Industry Minister Craig Laundy.

The minister said the new site would manufacture a range of products using graphene and gave Geelong the opportunity to make its mark as an international manufacturing base.

Graphene is not only 200 times stronger than steel, but it is also 300 more times conductive than copper and has the potential to turn manufacturing materials into “smart materials” able to com-

municate with computers, according to its manufacturers.

Advanced Manufacturing Growth Centre managing director Dr Jens Goennemann said that Geelong was a region of “industrial transformation”.

Dr Goennemann said that Geelong could lead the way not only in high tech research, but also in the commercialisation of that research.

“What we are developing here is the first commercial application of graphene and this means Geelong is now ahead of the world,” he said.

The new site has been made possible by a $250,000 investment from the Federal Government, in addition to $500,000 already invested into the Advanced Fibre Cluster located at Deakin University’s Waurn Ponds campus.

Letters Close to the end Why is the City of Greater Geelong closing the Geelong Saleyards?

The Geelong Saleyards has served the Geelong Agricultural Community for 148 years. Closing the Geelong Saleyards is going to cost money for farmers to cart their sheep and cattle to Colac Saleyard.

Small livestock farmers might have three to five sheep on a five-acre farm. They will only need the sheep for a year and that will cut the grass.

They can’t use a ride-on mower because the rideon mower is not made for farms.

There is no point buying a tractor and using the slasher. If the small farmers don’t have sheep eating the grass, the property will become a fire hazard.

Then the City of Greater Geelong is going to give a fine for not cutting their grass.

The small farmers can put the sheep on the trailer and take the sheep to the saleyards. There is no point taking three sheep on a livestock transportation truck - the man driving the truck is losing money because the big farmers that have the whole truck full is worth the drive to Ballarat or Colac.

The Ballarat and Colac saleyards only want farmers that have a large number of cattle or sheep. The Geelong Saleyards are made for the small farmers.

The City of Greater Geelong spent $5 million to the site for the sheepyards and now they are going to shut down the yards. What is the point of spending $5 million where you could just open the cattle yards as well and that will help our local economy.

Farmers need so much support at this time of year and closing the saleyards isn’t going to help.

It is a shame that the “City” administrators are going to close the saleyards because three quarters of Geelong is the country. The Surf Coast Shire and Golden Plains Shire are farming communities and they use the saleyards as well. What is the point of putting a community space where the saleyards is located?

Married with children One aspect of the same-sex marriage discussion apparently overlooked is how married people feel about redefining marriage.

Around 71 per cent of the population is or has been married. Many married people seem to feel that extending the concept of marriage to homosexuals would redefine, even devalue, the institution of marriage.

Even within the gay community, support for same-sex marriage is divided.

So what is marriage? Historically, marriage has not been primarily about love but procreation, parenting and progeny considerations.

If the traditional understanding of marriage is still valid then marrying a person of the same sex would not meet the requirements.

Also, in 1990 Australia ratified the UN declaration on the rights of the child, which states that a child is entitled to be cared for by a mother and father.

Festive worlds well apart The Two Worlds Festival will showcase a variety of Indigenous and western performers, art, traditional and not so traditional activities, Indigenous and modern multicultural food offerings right here in Geelong.

It’s a true celebration of Australia, the old and the new.

While sharing the rich Indigenous culture of language, ceremony and customs, Two Worlds Festival will also celebrate all genres of music, art and culture from both Indigenous and western performers alike.

Two Worlds Festival is a not-for-profit event that aims to grow organically into a recognised major event that entertains, educates, stimulates and promotes interaction and understanding across two cultures.

The Marrma Rom Two Worlds Foundation is looking forward to the festival, which aims to bring our cultures together in a fun, entertaining and interactive festival atmosphere.

The headline acts include Archie Roach, Jeff Lang, Neil Murray, Shane Howard Trio, Chris Wilson and Yirrmal and the Miliyawutj, with at least another 15 local and national musicians performing across four stages. These include local talent Imogen Brough, Mdrn Love, Immy Owusu, Alice Skye, Zuma, Social Skills and emerging Indigenous talent Philly with many more acts on a separate buskers stage.

The event will also feature indigenous and modern art with a theme around the two worlds concept ‘Walking in two worlds’. In addition there will be a variety of workshops, activities for kids, interactive dance demonstrations and pop up performances from both cultures.

The importance of a culturally significant location to both indigenous and western culture has meant the ideal location for the event is The Old Paper Mills in Fyansford. With its recent evolution as a future arts and events hub, this location

TWO WORLDS: Yirrmal and the Miliwutji. will have long-term significance to culture in the Geelong region.

Similarly, the area is also culturally significant to the Wathaurong people as a ceremonial ground.

In addition, the Old Paper Mills is located at Buckley Falls, the incredible story of William Buckley is a tremendous example of a person crossing cultures and embracing a foreign world view.

The inspiration for the Two Worlds Festival

comes from the Marrma’ Rom Foundation.

‘Marrma’ Rom’ translates to ‘two worlds, two cultures or two belief systems’ in Yolngu Matha, the language of the people in Arnhem Land).

Sun descends on the Fringe International performer Nilaja Sun will return to Geelong next month direct from the Edinburgh Festival Fringe with her latest play, Pike St. Sun will bring to life a host of characters living in Manhattan’s lower east at Geelong Performing Arts Centre from 6 September.

Under the shadow of the Manhattan Bridge, a struggling family prepares to ride out the next big storm.

The story begins with Evelyn, who is unable to move her teenage daughter Candace out of their crumbling Nilaja Sun tenement.

Candace suffered a mysterious aneurysm which rendered her unable to move or breathe on her own. Soon Evelyn plans for more than just survival - she fights for healing and redemption.

Sun portrays characters from decorated a Puerto Rican war veteran Manny, to octogenarian downstairs neighbour Mrs Applebaum, to Candace herself.

Nilaja Sun is an actor, playwright and has taught theatre in New York City public schools since 1998.

Her solo piece No Child, which she also performed in Geelong, has 21 international awards including a Theatre World Award.

Pike St runs in Geelong for five performances, from September 6 to 9, before Sun takes the show to Melbourne.

After more than two decades celebrating the life of Dusty Springfield, veteran performer Wendy Stapleton brings her long-running tribute to Geelong next month.

The 63-year-old has performed as the British pop legend at major theatres across Australia and the world since 1995.

“I’ve just modified it so I can do it at clubs,” Stapleton told the Indy Monday. “You can’t take an orchestra around."

Terence O’Connell had the brainchild of casting Stapleton as Springfield after directing her in controversial Australian musical Bad Boy Johnny and the Prophets of Doom.

“He had wanted to do a Dusty show for ages,” she said.

The plan to do a tribute show was “a bit odd" given Springfield was still alive at the time, Stapleton said.

“But (O’Connell) loved her so much he said ‘why wait until someone dies to tell them you love them’.”

O’Connell recognised the vocal and physical resemblance between the veteran Australian performer and the pop legend.

“If you see both of us with all of the make-up and wigs and stuff, you see a pretty close resemblance,” Stapleton said.

“I guess that’s why I was offered the job in the first place.”

Stapleton grew up on the sounds of Dusty before “dancing on telly as a kid” on the Tarax Show.

“I remember that as a kid,” she said. “My mother bought me the sheet music so I could sing it.”

“Back in the day, you used to have to go and get someone to play it on the piano for you. Now we all just go on computer and get the backing track.”

Stapleton performed the show for a stint in England during 1997 and 1998 just before Dusty died.

“She was so unwell by then that she couldn’t get out of bed,” she said.

“She didn’t see the show, but her friends did.

They were happy with the way the story was portrayed.”

Stapleton will perform Springfield’s hits at Geelong RSL on 6 September with her two singer-dancers, pianist and two guitarists, albeit on a smaller stage than decades ago.

“I’ve still got the collection of wigs I can tell you that,” she said.

Stapleton has 35-year long performing career, which includes stints on Neighbours and singing with her band Wendy and the Rocketts in the 1980s.“The first gig for the Rocketts was always the pub right in the centre of Geelong,” she said.

“If we had a good night at the Eureka it would be a good tour - it was a wild little place that pub!”

Stapleton again looked forward to returning to Geelong.

“A lot of our friends live down there,” she said.

“The last two weekends we’ve spent down in Portarlington - it’s really nice down there. I’d like to see all the old faces from the Eureka.”

Murray’s ‘hip hop’ album to be heard in Geelong

Remember when Geelong’s waterfront was almost totally excavated to create our new tourist precinct - only for workmen to discover a forgotten statue of King Edward VII? Or when the city decided to bury its ‘Sleepy Hollow’ reputation by holding a New Orleansstyle Jazz Funeral on the waterfront? With the mayor, councillors and council officers as pallbearers?

Colin Mockett does, and he has pictures to prove it.

They’ll be part of a new stage show titled ‘Geelong - Pictures Worth 1,000 Words’ which opens next month.

The show features heritage images and old film clips of Geelong shown on a cinema-sized screen with updated 21st century hindsightful commentary as well as live music of the times.

It’s the latest in a series of original historydriven musical shows presented by Colin Mockett and Shirley Power as part of the City’s Morning Showtimes At The Potato Shed.

Colin and Shirley’s exhibition Geelong- Pictures Worth 1,000 Words opens at 10.30am at the Potato Shed on Tuesday 12 September.

By Luke Voogt Multiple Platinum artist Pete Murray will play in Geelong this weekend following the release of his new album Camacho.

The new album had more of a “hip hop” feel than his previous work, Murray told the Indy Monday.

“It’s a lot punchier - it’s got more of a groove.

There’s a bit more production than previous albums.

“I’m really looking forward to letting the Aussie crowds hear the difference.”

So far Murray has released two songs from the album, Take Me Down and Sold.

But even with a million record sales under his belt, Murray hesitated to pick the new album’s winners.

“When you think you’ve got a hit you don’t, and when you don’t think you’ve got a hit you do,” he said.

“Feeler was in the charts for 30 weeks before it went to number one. But I don’t think it’s going to be too long until this album takes off and people really get into it."

Murray said the new album had no “weak moments”.

“That’s why I took six years to write it - I want people to play it from start to finish.”

Murray will also play the hits that made him famous at the Wool Exchange Saturday, like Feeler, So Beautiful and Better Days.

“It’s kind of hard not to play those songs,” he said. “Next tour people will, hopefully, be singing all of the songs on the new album as well.”

A record 350 businesses nominated in this year’s Geelong Business Excellence Awards which took place last Thursday.

Geelong Chamber of Commerce chief executive officer Bernadette Uzelac was amazed by the excitement and enthusiasm for the awards in the local business community.

“Every year the awards just seem to get bigger and better,” she said. “It really reflects the depth and level of talent we have in Geelong.”

About 600 people watched Oishi-m win the top trophy, with two new awards, Business Leader of the Year and Young Entrepreneur of the Year, up for grabs.

“We ensure the awards are contemporary and that they reflect our contemporary business environment,” Ms Uzelac said.

The winners of new categories, Stephen Roberts and Jake Munday, will progress to the Victorian Finals of the Australian Leadership Excellence Awards on 21 September.

SPORT Nature helps good catch ON THE BITE Chris Pitman With more favourable weather last week, anglers jumped at the chance to get out on the water.

The Geelong waterfront saw some of the region’s best piscatorial action, with anglers casting soft plastics to land pinkie snapper to 50cm along with Australian salmon to 1.5kg.

The action for land-based ‘Fishos’ picked up at sunset, with anglers having no trouble in finding good numbers.

Peri Stavropoulos and I fished Saturday afternoon, casting Megabass Hazedong Shads which snared Australian salmon to 1.5kg along the wall of the Geelong Yacht Club.

At times, we found schools of fish just slightly hitting the surface, and casting into the commotion resulted in almost certain hook ups.

Further round the bay from Clifton Springs to St Leonards fishers boated numerous whiting and squid. Whiting came to those along the Curlewis Bank in five to six metres of water.

Indented Heads became the go to location for squid with reef sections with anglers reeling in on artificial jigs in size 3.

If its 2kg big squid you’re after, then Queenscliff is the place. Over the past week numerous anglers landed bag-limit of captures with baited jigs fished deep over kelp beds the most effective approach.

The grass beds to the east of the harbour were also another squid producing location.

Offshore from Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads, gummy sharks have made themselves known to anglers.

Reports of five to six gummy sharks being boated in a session has been almost common over the last few weeks.

Peri and Michael Stavropoulos along with myself, set out Sunday morning making the most of a welcomed break in the weather.

After setting anchor, it was not long before Peri boated a Gummy shark of about 8kg that snapped up a pilchard.

Fishing on, we boated snapper to just over 2kg along with an impressive-sized cuttlefish.

Heading west, anglers found Southern bluefin tuna from Portland to Port Mac on the Victoria-South Australian Boarder.

In the estuaries, bream kept those casting vibe style lures busy with the bream schooled up in deeper sections of the river.

Freshwater anglers found it hard to stay away from Wurdee Boluc with the chance of hooking a trophy fish too tempting.

Cats eye home final and second spot on ladder

By Justin Flynn Geelong will be eyeing off second spot on the ladder when it hosts Greater Western Sydney at Simonds Stadium tomorrow night.

The Giants are half a game clear of Geelong in second spot, and a win from either side will be enough to secure a home final - in theory at least. The AFL has stated that Geelong would play a ‘home’ final at the MCG against any side other than the Giants.

A Geelong win would see it leapfrog GWS into second spot, and if St Kilda beats Richmond, the Cats would host a qualifying final at Simonds Stadium against the Giants.

If the Tigers beat the Saints by plenty, then it’s likely the Cats would ‘host’ Richmond at the MCG. A Geelong loss would see it stay in third and probably travel to Sydney in the first week of the finals, but if Richmond also wins, the Cats would finish fourth and face a daunting trip to Adelaide to take on the Crows. If the Giants win and West Coast knocks off Adelaide, the Cats would travel

Juniors rise to fill seniors’ shoes with Warrior mojo

North Geelong Warriors’ 2017 campaign finished how it started - dominating a much-fancied opponent only to suffer two cruel late goals and go down 2-1.

Despite the bottom-of-the-table finish for the senior team, there were many rays of sunshine to warm the hearts of the Warriors.

Developing juniors, notably, a strong-performing under 20 team will provide selection headaches for the 2018 pre-season.

Led by Mick Svaljek for the past two seasons, the under-20s have developed and matured sig-

nificantly since their 2014 introduction to National Premier Leagues. In 2016, the squad finished third in NPL2.

With the senior team’s promotion to top tier football, the under-20 team continued to develop against Victoria’s best young footballers in NPL. Their season was remarkable, finishing second to eventual champions South Melbourne.

Throughout the entire season, the Warriors jostled with South, with the top spot changing hands several times, adding to the excitement each week.

Svaljek, assistant coach Ahmad Sulaimi and manager Jared Svaljek were glowing in praise of their charges.

“The boys have been fantastic all year, accepting the challenges and putting in a terrific pre-season where focus was on conditioning,” Svaljek said.

“The squad reaped the rewards, finishing runner-up against the best young footballers in the country, all credit goes to the side for their commitment, hard work and unity.”

With the senior and under-20 team back in NPL2 West in 2018, the club, like many, will be reviewing its lists and strategy to build a successful period.

The club will look to its up and coming youth and further regional players to add to its depth and rebuild to take on Victoria’s best again.

Cougars bask in double-flag glory, in winning style Geelong Netball Club finished its season in style, taking out two premierships in the Victorian Netball League Sunday.

The senior side defeated DC North East Blaze 60-55 in the Division 1 final.

The Cougars played one of their most consistent matches of the season, starting well and steadily extending their lead throughout the match.

Geelong stretched the lead out to 10 goals with 10 minutes remaining.

But DC North East Blaze refused to give up, rallying to get within three goals in the final minutes before the Cougars pulled away.

Most valuable player Zanna Woods shot 27 goals from 34 attempts. Hannah Van Gemst was also dominant in attack, shooting 33 from 36.

The under-19 Cougars team defeated City West Falcons by one goal, 55-54, to win back-toback premierships.

It was in a tight and tough contest between two

strong attacking teams, with MVP Ruby Barkmeyer shooting 32 goals from 44 attempts, many of them from long range.

Elie Leyden also had a terrific game at the centre, driving the ball into attack and applying pressure in defence.

Only two players from the 2016 premiership team played in Sunday’s game, which made the flag even more special for the club.

This is the first time the Geelong Netball Club has won two Premierships in one year.
