In the piece Hannah depicted beautiful native trees and a river, which she titled ‘Restoring Hope.’ “My thinking behind this small act was for the children to feel valued, inspired and encouraged to come to school, to use their creativity and to

imagine things different from their immediate surroundings and circumstances,” Hannah said. “The painting itself took two full days’ work and a morning, where the kids were able to see how a work is planned and carried out step by step to create an image. “We spoke a lot about mixing colours and they learnt the primary colours and secondary colours by heart. “On the afternoon of the first day of painting I got the kids to sit down and draw their own version of the mural.”

“At times while I was painting the kids would sing a lot of songs which was very funny,” Hannah said. When she returned home, Hannah painted a portrait of one of the Ugandan students she worked alongside. “Through the delicate brush strokes I hoped to convey a glimpse of the joy, excitement and wonder of the children of Katwe slum,” Hannah added. The recent trip has inspired Hannah to continue working with the community through her art. “The trip to Uganda has cemented

my love for community-based art projects. “It brings everything I love together: children, teaching, art and even music. Hannah is currently studying towards a Bachelor of Visual Arts and Design at Australian Catholic University and works as a children’s art tutor in a Neighbourhood House. “I will continue to do community based art projects. “I believe that through art I can make a change.”

Sophie’s high in the saddle By Kyra Gillespie Tynong North resident Sophie Bennett, 14, has just become the youngest rider to win Eventing Victoria’s Amateur Event Rider of the Year award. This coveted award is performance-based, with the results of riders being collated over a 12-month period. At such a young age, Sophie’s results have surpassed every other Victorian amateur event rider, including adults. “It’s a bit surreal, to be honest - it hasn’t exactly sunk in,” Sophie said. “I just can’t believe Connie and I were able to achieve that together.” The awards were announced at the 2017 Victorian Eventers Ball at Moonee Valley Racecourse. As Sophie is underage, the organisers gave special permission for her to attend the presentation ceremony part of the evening. Sophie’s mare Branigans Irish Connection, affectionately called ‘Connie’, also placed fifth in the Event Horse of the Year which is an incredible achievement, as this is an open award normally won by horses ridden by professionals. Sophie is only in Year 9 and is part of the Elite Sports Performers (ESP) program St Paul’s Anglican Grammar School, where she juggles her schooling and sporting responsibilities.

Sophie and Connie have won many competitions together. Sophie has had some outstanding achievements these last 12 months. Last September Sophie competed in Cross Country at the Australian Interschool Equestrian Championships at which she won the Eventer’s Award across all levels. In November she was the overall series winner in her class at the Interschool Dressage Championships and in April at the Interschool Equestrian State Championships at Werribee she was the Division winner in the Intermediate Novice Dressage and overall Reserve Champion in the Secondary Working Hunter class. In April she also placed first overall at the Tintern Horse Trials, in the highest level possible for in-

terschool eventing competitions. In June Sophie competed in the Melbourne International Three Day Eventing competition against the best junior riders (up to 18 years of age) from all over Australia, finishing second overall and was also in the winning team with her horse, again as the youngest competitor. “We are so proud of Sophie as she has worked so hard to achieve outstanding results capped off by this amazing award,” Sophie’s mum Julie Bennett said. Sophie has been riding since she was five years old. “What I love most about riding is the freedom,” Sophie said. “It’s amazing how much trust horses have in us.”

Stitches in time help out By Kyra Gillespie The Beacy Girls patchwork, quilting and craft group has donated eight handmade quilts to the Tattersalls Palliative Care Unit. Hours of meticulous attention and care have gone into the colourful creations for the 15-bed unit. “We wanted to make their lives brighter,” patchwork group teacher Sue Davidson said. The patchwork group meet up each Thursday from 9:30am-midday at the Beaconsfield Neighbourhood Centre, where Sue teaches them an ar-

ray of skills and techniques to put towards their creative projects. “It’s not just a craft group - it’s a friendship group. “Everybody is welcome,” Sue said. Each quilt is made collaboratively; while one person might do the assembling, the material often comes from another person in the group. “It’s a combined effort.” Sue said. Each quilt has its own unique colour scheme and pattern that has been carefully thought out by its maker.

No two are the same. “You sort of have to audition your fabrics and choose the best ones,” group member Shirley Bell explained. Former nurse at the palliative care unit Helen Burns was blown away by the work of the Beaconsfield group. “The quilts that these ladies have made are amazing. “They are so beautiful and so special,” Helen said. “This is one of the biggest donations we’ve had - there’s almost enough for every bed to have

a new quilt.” Although Helen has retired from nursing, she now donates her time to managing the quilts for the unit. Helen’s mission is to make the ward feel like a home, rather than a hospital. “The quilts promote a homely, family environment. “The colours and patterns give the patients something interesting to look at. “And it’s not just for the patients to feel comfortable, but for the families too.”

Police are appealing for public assistance to help locate missing teen Allysia Hayes. The 14-year-old Pakenham girl was last seen at a school on Princes Highway Allysia Hayes. about 9am on Monday, 21 August. Police and family members hold concerns for Allysia’s welfare due to her age and the length of time she has been missing. She was last seen wearing a school uniform consisting of a white shirt, black pants and black shoes, and was also wearing a black jacket with ‘Von Dutch’ written on the front in white writing. Allysia was carrying a black/brown backpack with her. Police have released an image of Allysia in the hope someone can provide information on her current whereabouts. She is known to use the train network and frequents the Melbourne CBD. Anyone who sights Allysia or has information on her whereabouts is urged to contact the Pakenham Police Station on 5945 2500.

Their bit for daily bread By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Narre Warren soup kitchen has a unique perspective on life on the fringes of the world’s most liveable city. While Melbourne basks in the sought-after honour bestowed by The Economist magazine, Transit Soup Kitchen’s Keith Vethaak says life isn’t so liveable for many families hit by soaring rents and power costs. “If mortgage rates go up, it will be disastrous for a lot of families. “People are right on the limit.” He tells of a single mum living with seven kids in a van for the past 12 months. “She was told (by Department of Housing) they didn’t have a house big enough for them,” Mr Vethaak says. “You’d think a three-bedroom house would be better than living in a car.” Mr Vethaak has referred several recent families who’ve fled their homes due to domestic violence. They have also been living in cars for weeks. Mr Vethaak and his tireless, cheery band of 100 volunteers help feed more than 1100 registered families with hot meals as well as fresh groceries. That equates to about 3000 people seeking help, Mr Vethaak says. More than 40 new families strapped by living costs have joined that list in the past month. They include refugees and migrants from a diverse range of religions and nations. “The demand is enormous,” Mr Vethaak says. “And I’m expecting that will keep on growing.” There is a growing cohort of working families feeling the pinch, including contractors whose work dries up. Mr Vethaak hears of the shame of a

They get referred to him by Centrelink, doctors, police as well as schools with students skipping essential meals. “There’s a huge number who don’t have breakfast and lunch. “We later find out the family has to pay the rent, mortgage or electricity bills and there’s just no money for food.” It cooks or gives away about three tonnes of food a week, sourced from the charities Second Bite and Avocare as well as generous local supermarkets, market gardens and bakeries.

On Thursdays, the hall turns into a food market stocked with tonnes of fruit, vegetables, canned food, cereals and dairy. About 80 families are greeted heartily and made to feel welcome as they collect a week’s worth of food. It makes you wonder what would happen if Transit Soup Kitchen wasn’t their safety net. Mr Vethaak doesn’t have an answer. “It’s really, really tough especially in this area.” Donations and volunteers are welcome to Transit Soup Kitchen. If you can help, call 0438 398 594.

I refer to the article “Blizzard of tickets" (page 5, Berwick News, 17 August). The Casey Council owns three, if not four blocks of land immediately to the south of the Narre Warren Station - lots 1 and 2 Shrives Road and lot 3 (and possibly 5) in Austin Road, Narre Warren. These blocks are just grass and are not used for any worthwhile purpose. Shouldn’t the council be selling these to VicTrack and thereby allowing them to be turned into additional car parking spaces for use by railway commuters? Terry Walsh, Narre Warren South.

Janine Greening and Amanda Stapledon are giving a voice to victims of crime. 171949 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS “There’s all these people talking about crime but they’re not educated. “How are you going to know what it’s like to have a loved one murdered if you haven’t gone through it?” Ms Greening also founded the volunteer charity Forget Me Not Foundation for victims of crime, and has pushed for a National Victims of Crime Awareness Week. She receives no government funding. Since 2000, she feels there’s been little headway on victims’ rights, particularly with suppression orders. She takes issue with the recent Children’s Court Victoria warning for media not to identify victims, so as not stigmatise or embarrass juvenile offenders .

It’s a move to further silence victims, Ms Greening says. “You can’t even say you were bashed by this 14 or 15-year-old who lives in Casey. Look at my bruises. “The laws have crept even a step further. “It’s all about the perpetrator and nothing about the victim.” Victoria was “Suppression City”, handing out two blanket orders a day, she says. “They have got suppression orders on sex offenders and murderers in the community. “If they’re in the community near kids and vulnerable places like schools and disability homes, the places should know where the offenders are. “They should at least start with that.”

Cr Amanda Stapledon said the forum reprised a successful event staged at Casey three years ago. The aim was to bring people together, to ensure their experiences were validated and understood. It was also a chance to raise “how we can do things better”, and to acknowledge their ongoing advocacy and support of other victims. Cr Stapledon said it was also important to acknowledge the work of police. “They get to see (confronting) things every day and this must have a big impact on their lives and mental health.” The public event will welcome all comers, including victims, Victoria Police and interested community members. It will be hosted at Casey Civic Centre in October.

Victims of crime - so often said to be the forgotten voices in criminal justice - are set to be honoured at a forum hosted by City of Casey. Its organiser Janine Greening, of Cranbourne, is a victim - but also a leader. It still galls her that the two boys who bashed and strangled her mother to death in Rosebud 17 years ago may never be identified. They were never added to the sex offenders’ register, though they sexually assaulted 75-year-old Marie Greening Zidan and killed her in front of her disabled son. They phoned Ms Greening from a juvenile detention centre to taunt her about her mother’s death. Now, those killers would be in their thirties. They cannot be legally identified due to a court suppression order. Three trial judges said the thenteenagers were beyond rehabilitation, she says. “Rehabilitation doesn’t start until you are sorry for what you’ve done. “If they were sorry that’s fine. I don’t have a hatred for them - it’s a waste of energy.” Ms Greening’s forum will honour victims of crime and police officers in October. It will host speakers from Crime Stoppers, Adult Survivors of Child Sexual Abuse as well as speakers on the One Punch Can Kill campaign. There will also be talks on domestic violence, community safety and missing persons. Her forums have toured across Melbourne. “It’s all about education and awareness, and informing the public,” she says.

Casey’s hidden cruelty By Victoria Stone-Meadows Casey has an animal abuse problem according to the RSPCA, whose statistics show the area is the second-highest in the state for animal cruelty reports. In the 2016-’17 financial year, 435 reports of animal cruelty were made to the RSPCA in the City of Casey out of the 10,180 across the state. The only local government area with more reports of animal cruelty in the 2016-’17 financial year was Greater Geelong with 584 reports. Included in the reports from the Casey area were 199 reports of animals with insufficient food, water or shelter and 136 concerns about hygiene, grooming and housing conditions. Other reports made to the RSPCA about animals in Casey were about underweight animals, sick or injured animals not receiving vet treatment, animals being beaten or wounded and abandoned animals. According to the RSPCA both the City of Casey and Greater Geelong had 69 reports of animals being beaten, wounded, tormented or otherwise terrified. Dogs, cats and horses were found to be the animals most likely to be abused or mistreated in the Casey area. 2016-’17 statistics show 255 of the reports from Casey involved dogs and puppies, 64 involved cats and kittens and 67 involved horses. The City of Casey had only marginally improved in animal welfare from the 2015-’16 financial year, when the region had the highest number of reports in the state. CEO of RSPCA Victoria Dr Liz Walker said more owners were reported to the RSPCA for not meeting their animals’ basic needs than any other concern.

This underweight greyhound was seized from a property in Casey in August 2015. “It’s disappointing to see that, for the second year in a row, too many Victorian animals were reported to us because of concerns about very basic issues,” she said. “Food, water, shelter and vet care

when they’re sick or injured; these kinds of problems are so preventable.” However, Dr Walker said a majority of the cases bought to the RSPCA are quickly resolved after a visit from their inspectors.

“Concerns reported to us are quickly resolved by our Inspectors educating the owner or person in charge of the animals involved, and reminding them of their legal obligations to care for their animals,” she said.

“This year, RSPCA Victoria has started working more closely with local councils to understand local animal welfare issues, and to put in place tailored local initiatives to educate owners and better protect animals.”

At their limit on parking By Cam Lucadou-Wells Casey Council and Public Transport Victoria have no plans to expand Narre Warren railway station’s car park into a neighbouring vacant block. The grassy council-owned block, on the corner of Austin Avenue and Shrives Road, runs the length of the station’s southern flank. Its vacancy has come into focus during a period of high parking shortages around the station during Level Crossing Removal Authority power and signalling works since late July. Stung commuters, given no alternatives for the loss of up to 150 allday spaces, have since been booked in a council parking officer blitz in

surrounding streets. Nash Crawford was one who pointed out the unused neighbouring field as a temporary solution during the works up until 3 September. His voice was echoed by SouthEastern Metropolitan MP Gordon Rich-Phillips, who called on PTV to “urgently work with” the City of Casey to create temporary all day parking during the works. Public Transport Victoria indicated it had no plans to expand car parking at the station. “Narre Warren station has one of the larger car parks on our train network, with around 680 spaces. “There is also secure bike storage and four local bus routes to help people

access the station." Casey senior strategic planner Alistair Noble said “at this stage” there was no direction from the council to use the land for commuter parking. He said assessments were being made on the future use of the land, as well as other council assets in the Narre Warren Village precinct. Mr Noble said Public Transport Victoria was responsible for delivering and maintaining commuter car parking around the station. “Council is advocating to the State Government to improve transport options including bus connections within the Narre Warren area.” During the works, the Level Crossing Removal Authority has not provid-

ed any extra parking. The closest extra parking has been offered at Sandown Park station as well as East Malvern, Holmesglen, Huntingdale and Clayton for nine other car park closures in the Dandenong rail corridor. Meanwhile, Casey Council issued 63 parking tickets in the Rebound Court precinct during the works in the first two weeks of August. It’s more than double the 30 issued for the entirety of August 2016. Casey transport strategic advisor Paul Hamilton recently said the council had a difficult task in balancing the needs of commuters with the impact on the adjoining business and residential areas.

Public Transport Users Association spokesman Daniel Bowen said authorities should do all they could to accommodate commuters during the closures. “We know they have created new spaces at other stations, but these are some distance from Narre Warren, Hallam and Berwick. “By the time you’ve driven to Clayton or Sandown Park to find a space, you’re halfway to the city. “Improvements to pedestrian, cycling and bus services would help more people get to the station without having to drive, and should be provided not just while works are happening, but on a permanent basis.”

Cash for the homeless Casey housing support organisations Windermere, WAYSS and the Victorian Aboriginal Child Care Agency will receive a cash injection thanks to the State Government’s Accommodation for Homeless program. The $27 million program will see housing relief and support organisations all over the state receive a boost to their funding from the government. Windermere, WAYSS and the Victorian Aboriginal Child Care Agency are all partners in Community Housing Limited which will get $1,375,647 under the program. The aim of the program is to encourage closer partnerships and to have organisations working together to ease some of the pressures on housing vulnerable people in Victoria. In addition to this program, $6.7 million will also be provided for critical upgrades of three rooming houses through the Labor Government’s Community Housing Rooming House Upgrades program. Cranbourne MP Jude Perera said this support would help those people in the Casey Community find longer-term housing solutions and help them get their lives back on track. “Unfortunately there are residents in our local area doing it tough, some are doing it tougher than others - through no fault of their own,” he said. “This support will ensure that local residents in need are assisted with safe, stable housing as they get back on their feet.” Minister for Housing, Disability and

A Hampton Park man and a young woman have been arrested after police raided a property on Waverley Park Drive in Cranbourne on Friday 18 August. Detectives from the Dandenong Divisional Response Unit executed a search warrant on the property at about 6am. The 20-year-old man was arrested at the scene and charged with a number of offences including trafficking methamphetamine as well as possessing methamphetamine, ecstasy and cannabis, He is also facing two charges of theft of a motor vehicle, three counts of possessing proceeds of crime and committing an indictable offence while on bail. A 17-year-old girl was also arrested at property and has been charged on summons for drug possession. Police seized items from the property in the course of the raid including a trail motorbike and a road motorbike. Police also removed quantities of illicit drugs from the property including methamphetamine, ecstasy, cannabis as well as an amount of cash. The man faced the Dandenong Magistrate’s Court the same afternoon as the raid.

The ATO is helping teachers add tax and super to their classes this year with dedicated educational resources. Dancing muscles are flexed By Cam Lucadou-Wells Students at Hillsmeade Primary School are flexing their dancing muscles ahead of their debut in the Victorian State Schools Spectacular.

The 15 children have been rehearsing new and complex routines for the past six months. Under the theme of “Anything is possible”, they will join hundreds of other students from across the state for the mass

dance section of the event. The Victorian State Schools Spectacular involves more than 200 schools performing dance, song, puppetry and magic. It will be held on 16 September at Hisense Arena.

Creativity comes to Berwick artist Glo Edkins in sweeping, colourful brush strokes. But the energetic painter, who has entered six portraits into the prestigious Archibald Prize, says creativity seems to be a dying art. Ms Edkins has had her third portrait accepted at a state-based Salon des Refuses - a select exhibition of paintings that didn’t make the Archibald final cut of 42. Or also known as the ones that got away. This year’s painting was of a treasured friend and arts volunteer Jill Page, who recently received an Order of Australia Medal. “I tell all my friends they should do something special, and I can put them in the Archibald,” Ms Edkins jokes. “I drew (Jill) as if she’s on stage holding a sheet of music in her hand. “She’s sort of smiling at us like Mona Lisa.” It’s what Ms Edkins calls a traditional portrait, something different to this year’s controversial Archibald winner. “I thought the aim of the Archibald was to get a likeness of a person,” she says of the winner. “If that’s what they want, next time I won’t make the effort!” Ms Edkins says the skill of portraiture - which requires studying human beings - is being overwhelmed by photo realism. Even among Archibald works. “People are tracing and colouring in their photos. It’s all the rage and look lovely.” It points to a dying in creativity, she says. “It’s extremely important that people have their own thinking and tell their own stories in painting or in writing. “Now they’re just referring to Google!”

Warriors win for the ages By Russell Bennett The Pakenham Warriors have booked their date with destiny their place in their first ever Big V basketball grand final series - and they did it with another win for the ages in hostile territory against the top side in the Division 2 men’s competition, Craigieburn, on Saturday night. Pakenham went ahead 1-0 in their best of three semi-final series against the Eagles on 12 August, and on Saturday night the Warriors cut through a seemingly impenetrable wall of crowd noise to let their self-belief and belief in each other shine through. From even before the opening tip at a packed Craigieburn Leisure Centre, the Warriors’ confidence in delivering the Eagles a decisive knockout blow was evident. It wasn’t baseless arrogance - it was legitimate confidence stemming from their incredible Game 1 turnaround, where in the final 5:50 of game time they transformed a 13-point deficit into an astonishing eight-point win, 73-65. That confidence on Saturday night was evident from the look on

each of the Warriors’ faces - from coach Brent Russell down. It was a sheer refusal to let their opportunity slip. Though the Eagles diehards turned out in full voice to try and lift their side into a third and deciding game, Pakenham’s extremely loyal supporter base made trek in droves. By the opening tip, it seemed each group was trying to desperately out-do the other’s war-cry. A corner three at the quarter-time buzzer had the Eagles up 18-16 and Russell used the break before the second to remind his side of the importance of eliminating costly defensive lapses. But the visitors bounced back with a 23-15 second period to take a 39-33 lead into the half. They’d done a superb job in getting the Eagles into foul trouble right from the outset, and Russell urged his charges to keep attacking - to keep that foot on the throat. “We’re not coming back tomorrow (for a Game 3 on Sunday),” he said in the rooms. “Let’s get this done. “All we have to do is play an-

Big man Josh Bjelan was once again dominant, showing his unbelievable array of low-post moves - both offensive and defensive - in addition to his trusty mid-range jumper. He finished with a 17-point, 13-rebound double-double while Brad Bridgewater - embracing his role off the bench - finished with 10

points and 8 boards in less than 12 minutes of action. The pair would surely have to be considered the best big man combo in the division. The likes of Trent Lee, James Topp, Rob Maartens, Szalek and Ross also played their roles perfectly on Saturday in a performance that could only give them even more confidence for the grand final series. “Congratulations on making history as the first Big V Warriors team to make a grand final series,” Russell told his players in the rooms after the game. “You executed to perfection particularly defensively (on the likes of Dexter Graham, Robert Toller-Bond, and Eagles captain Liam Watt) - and we have two wins to go now. Two more times to sing that song.” The Warriors’ grand final series against the Collingwood All-Stars begins this Sunday, 27 August from 1pm at ‘The Colosseum’ at Cardinia Life in Pakenham. Game two is the following Saturday night from 7pm at Collingwood College, with the third game - if necessary - scheduled for the same venue on 3 September from noon.

For the Nar Nar Goon Maryknoll Cricket Club, building its junior program from the ground up will aid its quest to be a senior powerhouse in the years to come. With a 33-game losing streak for the club’s first XI, the Marygoons have set their sights on winning its first game since the 2014/15 season. But the club is also mindful of nurturing talent within the club and building its depth through the junior program, which has improved drastically since last season under Junior Coordinator Rick Bowman. “We run a fee-free junior club, meaning no juniors will have to pay any fees this season - it’s pretty exciting,” he said. After having just one junior side last season - an Under 12 Green team that finished last season in sixth spot - that is all set to change in a new era for the Spencer Street club. “With the juniors, we’re open to 10s, 12s, 14s and 16s - we’re building back up - we only had one junior side last year and I’ve done a lot of work in the off-season to get at the moment three sides - including an Under 10s side already full before rego day, but we’re building and there is a lot of interest around,” Bowman said. “We acknowledge we’ve been a struggling club over the last few years, but we’ve managed to turn things around and we’re looking quite strong - two of our junior boys played se-

Titans battle it out By David Nagel Step aside Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather Jr - the real heavyweight clash this weekend takes place at Holm Park Reserve on Saturday where Cranbourne and Narre Warren square off in the South East Football Netball League qualifying final. The perennial powerhouses return to the scene of their most recent finals engagement, the 2014 preliminary final - still spoken about in revered tones around these parts. The Magpies were 41 points ahead, 10 minutes into the third term, before Cranbourne champion Marc Holt cut loose. Hobbling on one leg, Holt conjured up a miracle, kicking eight goals to lead his side to a famous victory. Who would have thought it would take three years for these two teams to meet again in the post-season - ironically at the same ground ... and with Holt once again far from peak physical shape. Holt played his first game in two months and just his fifth since breaking his leg on 30 July last year, against Doveton last week and kicked six goals, clearly the difference in a six-point margin between the two sides at the final siren. But the Eagles have far more going for them than just the great man. The reigning champs are the most resilient team in the competition, a reputation thoroughly deserved after playing in the last six grand finals. The Magpies have lost just seven of 72 games since the beginning of 2014, the most recent a 43-47 loss to the Seagulls in round four, which followed a loss to Beaconsfield, which hurt badly. But the proud Magpies have regrouped, and completed a startling transformation, making it 13 consecutive wins with a dominant victory that confirms them as the team to beat for this year’s flag. “Losing those games was the kick up the bum we needed, we weren’t invincible and we needed to get back to training and work as hard as we ever had,” proud coach Jade Heinrich said. “We knew we had improved since then, but to have a win like that- just before finals- that’s going to give us a lot of mental confidence going forward. Credit to the girls, they played really good netball for four quarters and never took anything for granted.” The Magpies hovered over the Seagulls with an 11-7 first quarter before swooping like potential champions in the second term. Force to be reckoned with By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring The new BMW 5 Series, the seventh generation of the midsize range from the German specialist in sporting vehicles, is a technological tour de force. It’s as sporty as ever, though there’s a slight leaning to the luxurious side as the ‘5 is almost being seen as a smaller version of the super-luxury 7 Series. New drive modes alter steering, suspension, gearshift and throttle settings to suit the driver’s mood. The previous Eco Pro, Comfort and Sport modes on offer are now joined by a new Adaptive Mode. This system uses sensor inputs and navigation data and varies the vehicle’s responses to fit. To permit new owners to come to grips with the intricacies of what’s on offer in their new car, each BMW dealer now employs a BMW Genius to run through the various systems. The stylists have worked hard to present the new 5 Series as a luxury sports sedan, with relatively restrained lines and high quality details. Radiator grilles are very much back in vogue with most car marques these days and the BMW’s latest unit is pretty imposing. BMW’s distinctive ‘Hofmeister’ kink in the C-pillar is obviously part of the package, however the side bead line has been linked for the first time to

We particularly enjoyed the various ways the interior lighting can be tailored to suit our moods and the ex-

ternal conditions. The top-of-the-range BMW 540i sedan has a new-design 3.0-litre sixcylinder turbo-petrol unit that pumps out 250 kW and 450 Nm. BMW says this allows the sprint from zero to 100 km/h in just 5.1 seconds. The well-selected ratios on the sports version of the eight-speed automatic transmissions certainly play their part. There are also four- and six-cylinder petrol engines and a lower power diesel. As is becoming increasingly common in European cars these days, all

engines are turbocharged. The iDrive 6 infotainment system makes the new 5 Series the most connected BMW ever. Access is via a 10.25-inch colour touchscreen and the once-infamous BMW iDrive controller. The latter has been greatly improved since its early years and even features a touchpad to handwrite commands, and also has console-mounted buttons. It can also be used with a voice system that uses natural language recognition software that, while better than many of its type, still has a fair way to go in practicality. Wireless phone charging and wireless connectivity to Apple CarPlay works well and the extended Bluetooth system can connect to two smartphones at the same time. BMW 540i has a 12.3-inch multifunctional screen. The screen adapts to the selected drive mode. Eco Pro, for example, offers blue-lit displays that focus on efficient driving, while Sport brings in red dials and a focus on revs and speed. Safety systems include standard stability control, dynamic stability control, anti-lock braking with brake assist, cornering brake control and dynamic traction control. Fully autonomous driving is getting closer by the day. In something like

The Driving Assistant Plus package brings next-generation driving assistance to today’s Bimmers. Four side-mounted radar systems work with the front one to give a continuous picture of what’s going on all around the vehicle. The Active Cruise Control, with stop-go function, brakes and accelerates according to traffic flow, a relaxing way to survive major traffic jams. It works right down to zero km/h. Parking Assistant Plus offers Active Park Distance Control to the rear, with Surround View and Panorama View providing virtual imaging of the vehicle’s surroundings. BMW’s latest 5 Series is a hightech luxury-sports sedan that cries out for drivers who want to get the best from it.
