Woody weed control Cactus: Using Grazon Extra at 500 mL/100 L of water as a foliar spray will give slow burn down and regrowth may occur, so follow-up application may be necessary.

Tordon Regrowth Master at 2.5 L/100 L of water will give effective control of harrisia cactus.

African boxthorn often forms dense shrubs and it will shoot readily from broken roots.

It is extremely invasive and can seriously reduce stockcarrying capacity.

The sharp thorns pose a threat to the eyes of grazing animals, especially during dry times when animals chase feed under the plants.

How to control it In all situations, use Access

African boxthorn.

Herbicide at 1 L/60 L of diesel as a basal bark application to obtain optimum results.

Do not treat during periods of drought stress or when plants are not actively growing.

In situations where foliar application is used, always treat actively growing plants.

For best results use Grazon Extra Herbicide at 500 mL/100 L of water. Do not treat when leaves drop from the plant when spraying.

Broadleaf weeds in lawn Kamba M- controls certain

broadleaf weeds in winter cereals, pastures, turf and noncrop areas.

Roundup- Howl (Glyphosate 360) - A non-selective herbicide for the control of a broad range of annual, perennial and aquatic weeds.

Howl 360 is great for weeds around the garden and spot spraying around lawns.

Grains Research 2016’ publication provided regionally relevant trial data in an easy-tounderstand format.

“The Queensland Grains Research 2016 publication provides valuable insights to growers and agronomists focusing on cereal agronomy, pulse agronomy, nutrition, soils, farming systems, weeds and pathology,” Mr Fullelove said.

“Findings from research conducted by peers in conjunction with industry and researchers include what benefits deep placement

nutrients are having in a modern farming system. Other research in the report includes a difficultto-control weed project that found mixing different groups of preemergent herbicides were most effective in controlling certain weeds. This work was done in collaboration with another project to detect the impact these residual herbicides had on soil biota and the following crop.

Around 600 rural producers and landholders last week at Freestone sent a clear message to the council over the Warwick Saleyards.

‘NO FREE RIDE’ AT SALEYARDS

By JEREMY SOLLARS THE Southern Downs Regional Council says it is strictly enforcing fees for transhipping and holding of livestock at the Warwick Saleyards outside of regular selling days.

Local producers have voiced concern that some livestock owners are being allowed access to the saleyards on non-selling days and after hours and on weekends and may be avoiding fees for use of the facility to transfer livestock from their own vehicles to other carriers.

A council spokeswoman said there were “a range of operational activities undertaken at the Warwick Saleyards with associated fees and charges applied”.

“These are outlined in the council’s Schedule of General Fees and Charges for 2017/18, which is available on the website www.sdrc.qld.gov.au “In this case, there are transhipping fees for livestock left in the saleyards for shipping to other saleyards, abattoirs, etc., and holding fees, and these apply per head in the council’s fees and charges.

“The Infrastructure Replacement Levy is also charged per head when these fees are incurred.

“From 1 July 2017 these fees have been strictly charged.”

The Free Times asked the council if the charges had been strictly enforced prior to 1 July this year but did not receive a response by time of printing of this month’s Rural Links.

The topic of the potential leasing out of the Warwick Saleyards was discussed at a public meeting of rural producers and landholders held at the Freestone Memorial Hall last Thursday.

The overwhelming consensus of the meeting - which drew a crowd of around 600 was that the council must continue to directly manage the Warwick Saleyards.

Earlier this year the council called for Expressions of Interest (EOIs) for the potential leasing out of the saleyards to a private operator but many in the rural sector

The council says the saleyards are “not for sale” but the leasing-out option is on the table. fear this would see selling and other fees increased, and that the only financial benefit of outside management would be to the operator and not the community.

The meeting was organised by former deputy mayor Ross Bartley and chaired by former mayor Ron Bellingham.

Mr Bellingham told those in attendance it was his view, shared by many others, that the “status quo” of council running the saleyards be maintained.

Mayor Tracy Dobie was at the meeting and made it clear to the crowd that the Warwick Saleyards was definitely “not for sale”.

“We have sought expressions of interest from people who run saleyards for a living to see if there is the potential for the facility to be run better and more efficiently,” Cr Dobie said.

Lyle Grayson - who sold the first beast in the first cattle sale at the Saleyards back in 1962 - gave the meeting a brief history of the facility, reminding those there it was a joint initiative of the former Warwick City Council and the Glengallan and Rosenthal Shire Councils to construct a municipal saleyards.

Prior to 1962 livestock sales in Warwick were carried out at private yards owned and operated by local agents.

Many at last Thursday’s meeting expressed concern and anger at what they claim is a lack of transparency about the saleyards EOI process, with most of the discussion held in confidential meetings of the Saleyards Advisory Committee.

The first meeting of the committee last December considered the option of demolishing the existing saleyards and building a new facility nearby, potentially on land owned by Frasers Livestock Transport on Kenilworth Street near their depot.

Les Fraser told the Free Times last week the Fraser family had not submitted an EOI and had “no interest in building or running saleyards”.

But he was also adamant the current saleyards were too small and there was insufficient room on the present site for expansion.

Last Thursday’s meeting at Freestone Memorial Hall also discussed the council’s controversial ‘Invasive Pest Control Scheme’ (IPCS) and a petition to Local Government Minister and Deputy Premier Jackie Trad was circulated, along with a petition to the council on the Saleyards.

EKKA SEES THE BEST OF BREED

By JEREMY SOLLARS IT’S Ekka time and Southern Downs and Granite Belt producers were right in the thick of livestock competition at the 2017 Royal Queensland Show as Rural Links went to print this month.

Among them was Carabeen Beef Bazadais and Angus Stud, above Killarney at The Falls.

Owners Tony Lomax and Anna Fearnley were at the Ekka this year showing a Bazadais bull and a cow with her nine-week old calf.

The 28-month-old bull weighed in at 912 kilos and had an eye muscle area (EMA) of 138 cm2.

Tony and Anna produce premium grass-fed cattle for their own branded beef which supplies private customers and bespoke restaurants.

Their cattle are processed at 14 to 16 months and weigh between 450kg to 500kg on pasture. Tony and Anna say experience has shown them the financial benefits of crossbreeding Bazadais over their commercial Angus herd.

In other Ekka news Carey Brothers abattoir at Yangan processed this year’s prime lambs with judging having taken place last Tuesday 8 August.

From 1994, when the virus was first identified, to August 2017, there have been 60 known Hendra incidents resulting in the death of 102 horses. During this period, Queensland has recorded 40 incidents and NSW has had 20.

SHEEP STILL RUNNING STRONG

By JEREMY SOLLARS YOU can’t keep good sheep producers down - despite the scourge of wild dogs, the health police animal liberationists, Australia’s sheep and lamb sector continues to go from strength to strength.

It’s off the back of increased prices, production and exports, according to Rural Bank’s 2017 Australian Sheep Annual Review released this month.

Strong demand and tight supply in the first half of 2017 has caused the National Trade Lamb Indicator (NTLI) to continue to average higher for the fourth year in a row, averaging 639c/kg cwt for the first half of 2017, 14 per cent higher than the same period last year.

National mutton prices are also averaging 38 per cent higher than 2016, as producers held onto their breeding stock and capitalised on strong wool prices.

And local conditions back up Rural Bank’s findings.

Warwick is Queensland’s only sheep and lamb selling centre and while farmers are always a cautious lot, the mood around the sheep pens at the Warwick Saleyards right now is decidedly upbeat.

Last week’s Wednesday sale saw 1267 lambs and hoggets yarded at Warwick and while prices eased marginally on the first week in August the top lambs account belonging to GG and AI Dempsey, of Dalby - sold for $160.

And recent sale-toppers have consistently been in the $160 to $170 bracket, with total yardings either nudging close to 2000 or more in some instances.

Local buyer Joe Browne says the only problem right now is a lack of butcher’s lambs for the local domestic market, with most producers taking advantage of strong export values in recent months.

“With export prices talked up a lot of people concentrated on big, heavy lambs for export,” he told Rural Links.

“So right now there’s what we could call an acute shortage of good butcher’s lambs, which is pretty well what we expected would happen.

“But we’ve had a good season here since (Cyclone) Debbie, some very useful rainfall.

“The market has been a little bit slacker in the last couple of weeks but it’s still very strong overall.”

Joe bought one of the few pens of good light lambs for local slaughter last week for $134 a head, noting that on the dollars

It’s a buoyant market. side it’s around the same money the heavier lambs are fetching right now, a sure sign of domestic supply being down.

And another sure sign is the present interest in young store lambs to get ready for fattening, which are also making good money.

Good heavy lambs were snapped up last week by buyers on behalf of Fletcher International Exports for slaughter at their Dubbo works.

Another regular presence at the Warwick sale is Thomas Foods International (TFI), whose purchases also head south over the border to be processed at Tamworth.

Australian sheep industry in “rude health”, says Rural Bank The Rural Bank report, launched by specialist insights team ‘Ag Answers’, provides producers and industry with a concise analysis on sheep flock, lamb and mutton production, seasonal conditions, prices and demand in Australia and the global market.

Andrew Smith, general manager of agribusiness for Rural Bank, said the Australian sheep industry is in “rude health”.

“It’s quite remarkable to have prices and production increasing for so long, showing the consistent, strong growth in demand,” he said.

“Given domestic lamb consumption has remained relatively steady since the mid-1990s, it’s clear export markets have underpinned the sector’s growth.

“The quantity of lamb exported has

increased for six consecutive years and was 62 per cent higher in 2016 than 2010.

“At the same time, the price paid for Australian lamb has also risen, increasing the value of Australian sheep exports.

“Declining production in New Zealand the largest exporter of lamb to China - has created more opportunities for Australian lamb in the Chinese market, resulting in export volumes increasing 39 per cent compared to 2016.

“When this is combined with continued growth in Australian lamb’s most valuable export market, the USA, long-term demand and prices are set to continue their upward trajectory.”

He said the only negative to the buoyant conditions is the forecast for a drier and warmer winter and early spring.

I confess - I am a bit of a foodie. And writing a story about lamb this month I found my thoughts and my taste buds wandering. I fancy myself as being a bit handy in the kitchen - I’ve certainly never had any complaints about this ridiculously simple way with lamb shoulder. A leg works just as well. As you’ll see I’m big on precise measurements ...

INGREDIENTS 1 boned and butterflied shoulder of locally-grown lamb - ask your butcher to do this for you.

Soy sauce, lots of it.

Ginger (lots of it, grated, or just spoon it out of a jar like I do).

Garlic (lots of it, crushed, or from a jar).

Olive oil and some sesame oil.

METHOD Mix all the above ingredients together in a bowl and massage the mixture well into the lamb with your hands. Marinate the lamb for a long time (ie, overnight), place on a roasting rack over a suitable tray, stick a meat thermometer in it and roast in either a covered barbecue or in the oven for an hour and a half or so, or until desired doneness (I like my lamb a little on the pink side inside). Rest for 10 minutes before slicing, and serve with some microwaved new potatoes with a little sesame oil and coriander and some steamed Asian greens.

MICK TAPS INTO DEEP MYSTERIES

By JEREMY SOLLARS MICK Glasby’s services as a water diviner are in demand from Longreach to Townsville as well as in our own backyard on the Southern Downs and Granite Belt.

The ability to divine underground water sources - also known as having “the touch” - is vested in but a few lucky individuals and Mick Glasby is one of them.

Divining continues to stump the scientific community and the so-called experts but spend a bit of time with Mick as Rural Links did recently and even the most hardened sceptic would be hard-pressed to question his rare talent.

Mick discovered his divining ability in his early twenties on the original Glasby family property at Emu Vale, where legendary local diviner Noel Hildred was once engaged to find water.

Mick decided to pick up Noel’s willow stick for a bit of a laugh and both got the surprise of their lives when it started bending in Mick’s hands out in the paddock.

“He said to me, ‘Young fella, you’ve got it - you’ve got the touch',” Mick recalls with a grin.

“He told me I probably had even more of the touch than he did.

“But I’ve learned a lot over the years - it’s like anything, practice makes perfect.”

It’s a fact that different materials work for different diviners - while some swear

by L-shaped metal rods, Mick’s preferred instrument is a forked willow twig, but he’ll also employ a copper rod which helps to determine salinity levels, and a length of plain fencing wire to indicate water level depth underground.

“A peach twig will also work with me - it’s similar to willow in that they’re both trees that need constant water,” Mick explained.

Mick recently swapped his rural property at Emu Vale for the convenience of town living and demonstrated his abilities to Rural Links in his own front yard on Hudson Street, where he discovered an underground stream running down from nearby Locke Street.

Pacing over a short distance of several metres, the willow twig sharply bent and dipped at the central point of the stream, requiring considerable upward force from Mick’s arms to control it before it slackened off as he stepped off the stream, and he estimated the depth with the fencing wire at around 10 feet.

or north to south are usually the easiest to find and “anything east-west, well so much the better”.

He claims a success rate of 98 per cent and it’s that degree of accuracy which sees Mick Glasby in demand from the farming community and others, travelling around Queensland to help producers locate precious water on their properties and juggling divining with his full-time day job at the Department of Transport and Main Roads.

When he goes on a property for the first time, he makes a series of visual observations of the lay of the land, often based on existing water supply points such as bores, and even house supplies, before commencing the divining process itself in what he considers to be likely areas of previously-untapped streams and springs underground.

When he’s sure he’s on the spot - as he says, “when the pull’s right” - a driller, more often than not Warwick local and good mate Jack Gentle - will then move in and determine if Mick is on the money.

But it can take time - Mick recently spent five hours walking a 1000-acre property at fertile Cecil Plains before he was confident he’d found a good water source - and out west it can be a full day or even a weekend of walking.

Drilling can also be a lengthy process depending on the depth of the underground flow.

And it’s sometimes to Mick’s frustration - and to their considerable cost - that a property owner will choose to ignore the results of his divining, if they show water that’s not in the most convenient or accessible location, or “just where they’d like it to be”.

“I spend most of the weekends away divining, and a lot of my holidays and RDOs,” he said.

“You get to see a lot of beautiful country - a few weeks ago I was up near Gympie in the Mary Valley, it’s magnificent up there, and Ban Ban Springs in the North Burnett.

“I’ll be heading out to Longreach soon to a big property out there, a million acres - they’ll get me up in the chopper to have a look over the place first and get some bearings.

“The weekend after that I’ll jump on a plane and head up to Townsville.

“I do a fair bit around Ipswich as well and I get a few jobs around here - a lot of it these days is people who’ve come out from Brisbane or the coast and bought a block to retire on and they need water.”

When asked about what some - including the sceptics - describe as the ‘mystical’ properties of the water diviner, Mick just laughs.

“I don’t know where it comes from, I really don’t,” he said.

“I asked (Dr) Bryan Slattery about it once he said, ‘It’s a mystery to me as well’.”

The fact that camels are so well suited to Australian conditions and we have a large population of wild camels is also assisting with the growth of the industry. In fact, some dairies are domesticating wild female camels - also known as cows - to use as dairy camels.

The next challenge for the Australian camel milk industry is transitioning from cottage industry to commercial scale.

JUJUBES Another new and emerging agricultural industry for Australia is a fruit called jujubes.

While the tree has been grown successfully in Australia for the past 15 years, recent investments, research and increasing interest from farmers, especially in Western Australia,

has seen the production of the fruit expand rapidly in the past three years.

The jujube is an extremely popular fruit in China and target markets for Australian production include China, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

For thousands of years, it has been used in traditional Chinese medicine and as food it is eaten fresh or dried or in processed form, where it is often known as a Chinese date. The latter is used in confectionary and for compotes and jam.

The fruit itself has a thin, dark red skin which surrounds its sweet white flesh. They have a high nutritional value and when eaten fresh they are crisp like an apple. When dried they become chewy and sweet.

consumed by people for more than 6000 years, much longer than we have consumed cows milk. Currently, the global production and consumption of camel milk is dominated by countries in North and East Africa, the Middle East and parts of Asia, but that is changing.

While camel milk tastes and looks similar to cows milk, its promoters claim some impressive health properties that consumers in Australia and the US are starting to catch on to.

Some of these include the capacity to alleviate food and seasonal allergies, usefulness in reducing insulin dependency, ease of digestion and assistance with gut allergies associated with the autism spectrum, Crohn’s Disease, ADD and ADHD. No doubt more research is required to validate some of these claims.

Sold in both pasteurised and unpasteurised form, demand for camel milk in Australia currently outweighs supply and the newfound popularity of the product is driving the expansion of existing camel dairies and development of new enterprises in Victoria and Queensland. Over the next five years, don’t be surprised to see a major increase in Australian camel milk production.

NEW GENERATION OF GROWERS

By JEREMY SOLLARS THERE’S a lot of talk around about the next generation of farming families taking a career path off the land, but thankfully there’s a good cohort of young people at Warwick State High School who are keen to earn a living with mud on the boots.

Rural Links recently caught up with students from the school’s agriculture program, who spend part of each week getting their boots and hands dirty learning the farming basics.

Under the watchful eye of teacher Alan Gamgee, the students - who number around 120 in a typical year - develop skills in areas such as animal husbandry, tractor operation and fencing, as well as the science of farming.

The school runs a small herd of stud Droughtmaster cattle, along with flocks of Texel sheep and Angora goats and plants crops on the Condamine River floodplain near the ‘ag block’ at the end of Guy Street, just over from the school oval.

Vegies grown by the students such as zucchini and broccoli are also sold within the school community.

All up the program involves farming over 18 hectares of ground, with five of those hectares at the Mount Gordon campus, which serves as a spare grazing block.

The Year 11 and 12 students achieve a practical outcome in the form of a Certificate II in Rural Operations - in partnership with Scott Bloomfield of the Warwick TAFE - while the younger grades get plenty of hands-on exposure as well.

And if you think it’s just a sideline to the general run of academic life, think again the farming’s done with a commercial intent behind it, with the program generating income for the school from sales of stud cattle and lot-fed steers and fat lambs, and mohair fleece from the Angoras goes to the overseas market via an auction centre.

is about and the students are under no illusions about it being an easy working life.

He said from a cropping point of view the program did “very well” out of the river plain flooding which followed Cyclone Debbie earlier this year, which also meant the students had to learn to act quickly when big weather pays a visit.

“We were very lucky - the lucerne was high and healthy at the time and the water fortunately receded within 24 hours,” he said.

“The students assisted in moving the

livestock to refuge on the Mount Gordon block - it was all hands on deck and without any loss.

“For me, I get a lot of personal satisfaction out of working with the students.

“You see them build their confidence to the point where you can say, ‘Here’s the key to the tractor - go and plough the bottom paddock’.

“They’re given responsibilities in line with their age and their experience.”

GET QUICK WITH A MOROCCAN THE BUSH COOK IT HAS come to the attention of the Bush Cook that many very tasty soups were served at the Gardening Extravaganza during the Jumpers and Jazz festival last month.

Quick Moroccan Lamb Soup (Harira) is just one of these.

Ingredients: 1 tab olive oil, 1 finely chopped brown onion, 2 crushed garlic cloves.

2 teaspoons each ground turmeric, sweet paprika and ground cumin and 1 teaspoon ground ginger.

500 gms lamb mince.

3 cups beef stock 1 400gm can each of chick peas and brown lentils, drained and rinsed.

1 400 gm tin of crushed tomatoes.

Method: Fry onion and garlic in olive oil until just starting to brown.

Add all spices and stir for about 30 seconds until fragrant.

Add the mince and stir with a wooden spoon to break up lumps until cooked.

Add the stock, plus 1 extra cup water, lentils, chick peas and tomatoes.

Simmer for about 15 mins to reduce a little and then serve.

To make this really look spectacular, steam and peel about 1 cup of frozen broad beans and stir these in just before serving. The bright green really adds a great contrast. Also a dollop of natural Greek yoghurt and some torn fresh coriander leaves is an additional garnish that really lifts the look and taste of this wonderfully tasty, filling, healthy soup.

It is good to be fairly heavy handed with the spices so adjust to taste. Also, any paprika will work Smokey paprika is often used if that is what is in the cupboard.

As with most soups, it only gets better if left in the fridge for at least a day to let the flavours develop and then rewarmed.

Serve with crusty bread for a complete meal.
