Lives on the line By Victoria Stone-Meadows Council has vowed to do everything it can to protect people on the roads in the City of Casey following the death of a teenage girl and her mother in Cranbourne last week. Xinyu Yuan, 14, and her mother, Ma Li Dai, 44, were killed when a car smashed into theirs on the South Gippsland Highway at 7.30pm on Wednesday, 9 August, as they were leaving Lighthouse Christian College. While the 100km/h zone of the South Gippsland Highway between Bullarto Road and Baxter-Tooradin Road in Cranbourne is not deemed a blackspot by VicRoads, there has been a number of traffic accidents there over the years. Data from VicRoads show that between January 2014 and February this year, there has been 27 crashes on that stretch of the highway that has resulted in 40 people injured. Councillor Geoff Ablett raised an item of urgent business at a council meeting on Tuesday 15 August that will see council strongly advocate for changes to the road conditions around the school. The motion, which was passed unanimously, will see council writing to VicRoads and Victoria Police to take action on improving safety on the South Gippsland Highway. Cr Ablett said the urgent recommendation was written in conjunction with mayor Sam Aziz and Casey’s manager of City Design and Construction Trevor Griffin. “The loss of these two lives is a very tragic situation, and it is important we get together to do everything we can as soon as we can to improve this very difficult turn,” he said. “The police are still investigating the exact circumstances of the accident, but this gives an opportunity for

the school to talk about how fast the traffic is and for us to talk to VicRoads to reduce the speed limit.” Cr Ablett said the stretch of the South Gippsland Highway outside the school desperately needed a reduced speed limit school zone. “In our discussions, we will be talking about a school zone,” he said. “There should be lights like we have for Tooradin which has made a huge difference to the traffic speed in the town.” Following the fatal collision, VicRoads CEO John Merritt said VicRoads would be looking at ways to
improve safety on the road outside the school. “I am deeply saddened by this tragic loss of life, and my heart goes out to those involved, their family and friends,” he said. “Following every death on our roads, VicRoads inspects the site and works with Victoria Police through their investigation.” “VicRoads will look at what can be done to improve safety for drivers exiting the school’s driveway and continue to monitor traffic conditions.” Mayor Sam Aziz said while council would advocate for residents' safety, he
advised the people of Casey to take action as well. “Residents should be contacting their local member of parliament as VicRoads is an instrument of the parliament and members would have jurisdiction over that,” he said. “Our hands are tied because it is not our road but our role in this instance is advocacy on behalf of the residents.” Part of the council recommendation involves writing to Victoria Police to increase traffic monitoring operations on this particular part of the South Gippsland Highway. Victoria Police Acting Area Com-
mander Tim Hansen revealed in a press conference following the accident that the offending driver had been in an argument at a nearby pub before the crash. “It is an important time to take stock and remember these two victims are not going home to their family, and there is a broader network who are significantly impacted by this,” Acting Commander Hansen said. “We have had 150 people die on Victorian roads this year, and in over 10 per cent of those it was found the driver experienced a traumatic event before getting in their car and having a fatal collision.” “While police are focused on distractions inside the car, there is a trend where distractions are external and people are jumping in cars in highly emotive states and driving dangerously; taking out frustrations and putting others a risk,” he said. Mr Hansen urged everyone to take responsibility for themselves and their families on the roads by speaking with loved ones about the dangers of driving in a distracted state. “The time for justifying and blaming others had ended; we all need to take responsibility for our own actions,” he said. “None of us are perfect drivers, we all get frustrated, we all hate congestion, we all have relationship issues, but this doesn’t justify driving like a hoon and endangering lives.” “It is not fair to those people who don’t get to go home.” At the council meeting on Tuesday, Cr Ablett said council had a duty of care to residents to ensure incidents like this were less likely in the future. “It could happen again and we will be going all out to get a school zone in place,” he said.

Prominent police response By Cam Lucadou-Wells Police have launched a major traffic blitz to counter the high number of lives lost on roads in Melbourne’s south-east. Since 11 August, police have pooled highway patrol resources into Greater Dandenong, Casey and Cardinia as part of Operation Prominent. They have also sent a salvo of road safety video posts out on local EyeWatch Facebook pages. The operation comes in the wake of a tragic two-car crash outside Lighthouse Christian College in Cranbourne East on 10 August in which a mother and her teenage daughter were killed.
“On a human level, it’s desperately sad,” police southern metro region division 3’s Inspector Tom Nairn said. “You can’t go away from those events without being affected by them. “Professionally it reinforces the importance of what we do in terms of traffic enforcement. “It’s these type of events that we’re working very hard to prevent.” In its first days, the operation has netted three drink drivers, four drug drivers and 15 unlicensed and disqualified drivers. Officers have also detected 157 speeding drivers, including a male
P-plate driver allegedly travelling at 179km/h in a 100km/h zone on Ballarto Road, Cardinia, about 4.58pm on 14 August. He is expected to be charged on summons with driving at a dangerous speed, failing to display P-plates and driving a prohibited probationary vehicle. His car was impounded for 30 days, costing him $972. A female driver was also fined $595 and lost six demerit points when caught speeding at 110km/h in a 70km/h zone on Beaconsfield-Emerald Road, Dewhurst, about 5pm on 12 August. During the operation, police booked four drivers illegally using a mobile
phone, four for not wearing seat belts and detected 18 unregistered vehicles. In the region, 18 people have died on the road this year - the highest of any police division in Victoria. Eleven of those fatalities could be attributed to poor decision making and driver behaviour, Inspector Nairn said. Police would use every measure such as impoundment and dragging people to the courts to crack down on these highrisk drivers, he said. They are a different cohort than the organised hoon drivers who are also under ongoing investigation in the southeast.
“We’re more targeting the person who leaves a licenced premises after having a couple of drinks and then rolls off down the road.” It came down to choices that lead to fatal consequences, he said. “People in this area are making a choice to drive while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, they’re making a choice to speed or drive when they’re not authorised to do so. Tragically these choices can result in people losing their lives and leaving families and friends without their loved ones.” The highly-visible police operation continues until Saturday 19 August.
All abuzz over roadside proposal on the highway of love By Victoria Stone-Meadows It was the marriage proposal that had many in Casey buzzing. In June this year, Adam Kondarios used handmade signs posted along Fisheries Road in Cranbourne South to ask his partner Loren Fuccio for her hand in marriage. However, the Narre Warren couple behind the roadside proposal took a few days to track down as they had jetted off on a European adventure just days after Mr Kondarios popped the question. Now that the couple are back in the country and back to their usual lives, they have agreed to tell the story of their love and of the very public proposal. Mr Kondarios said he first toyed with the idea of proposing to Ms Fuccio while on holidays, but quickly decided against it. “I thought to myself, ‘do I put it in our luggage bag and spring it on her by asking her to grab something from my bag’ but I thought that was a bit slack,” he said. “I thought about doing it overseas, but you have to declare valuable things, and her finding out about it deterred me from doing it.” “I also didn’t want the possibility of a proposal hanging over our heads; I wanted us to have a good time while over there.” With an overseas proposal out of the question, Mr Kondarios had to do a bit of sneaking around to get his signs organised for Ms Fuccio’s drive home from work in Sommerville. “On the Monday, I lied and I said I was going to see a mate, and she was going to dads for dinner, so I made the signs that night,” he said. “On Tuesday, I spoke to her mum and dad and I said I was working late and she still had no idea.” “I’m not a liar by any means, so to lie to her was something different.” While Mr Kondarios said he really didn’t like sneaking around and lying to his partner, it was all worth it for the look on her face when she saw the signs. at the end.” When she came to the end of the signs and spotted Mr Kondarios’ car, she pulled over still in a state of disbelief. “I kept saying, ‘What the f***?’ over and over again, and it took him actually prompting me for an answer before I said, 'yes',” she said. “We were laughing, giggling and hugging, then it was noisy with all the cars, so we sat in his car and he had a
bottle of champagne and glasses, so we could let it sink in.” The couple then left for Europe on 1 July, but the signs remained in place, leaving the Casey community guessing who Loren was and if she said yes. “It has caused a bit of a stir, but I didn’t think it was anything when I was banging in the signs,” Mr Kondarios said. “We were lying in bed when my sister tagged me and it was so weird, we
didn’t expect people to be so interested,” Ms Fuccio said. “What really blows my mind is that there are other Lorens spelled my way.” The couple were thrilled people had taken such an interest in their proposal, but are now looking forward to planning their wedding and getting back to their lives. “We are just excited to start this new chapter of our lives.”

kids get a dose of book magic By Victoria Stone-Meadows As primary schools around the state celebrate Book Week, students from all over are dressing up as their favourite characters for the annual parades. Tooradin Primary School was no exception as students came to school dressed as everything from Harry Potter, to Minions, to The Cat in the Hat. Families of the students came along to the Book Week parade and will be sticking around for the week to hear students read from their favourite stories. Grandparents of students are invited on Thursday 17 August to share in classroom activities and the school Book Fair. Each day during Book Week at Tooradin a passage from a mystery book will be read and the classes have to try to guess together the title and author - book prizes will be awarded to one winning class each day. Well-being co-ordinator at the school, Rachel Davis, said Book Week was always a magical time for the students. “It is always a wonderful atmosphere to have the whole school immersed in a love of such a wide variety of literature - amazing books never lose their magic,” she said.

Focus on Cannons Creek By Victoria Stone-Meadows Cannons Creek residents had their concerns raised in a Casey Council meeting by Councillor Geoff Ablett. Cr Ablett raised a notice of motion that would see the concerns of the Cannons Creek Residents’ Association specifically addressed when the council developed the Cannons Creek town plan. Residents raised a number of concerns in their township that they feel have been overlooked by planning and statutory authorities. Concerns include a lack of regular cleaning of roadside rubbish, road maintenance, weed management on Parks Victoria and DELWP land and roaming cats and dogs. When raising the motion at the 15 August council meeting, Cr Ablett said meeting with residents of Cannons Creek gave him a good insight into the issues the small community was facing.
“It was great to get down there and look through those things,” he said. “The main problem is the Parks Victoria land; they don’t do a good job of spraying the weeds and that is causing huge issues.” Cr Ablett did say however that many of the concerns residents had could be addressed by council directly. “Then the camping signs and other things we can do to is a task for the town plan that fits in with the Green Wedge strategy,” he said. “Cannons Creek should have a town plan that makes it better for the future of the town.” “They are very energetic people who want to get these things done, and we have a responsibility to plan a great township for the future.” The council unanimously passed a resolution that will see council officers meet with the residents' association to further discuss the issues raised and find Residents of the coastal Casey village Cannons Creek will have the concerns about their town directly addressed by Picture: GARY SISSONS Casey Council. 149778 the best ways to address them.

‘Cat burglar’ back to earth By Victoria Stone-Meadows A 41-year-old man from Cranbourne has been arrested after he woke a family in the dead of night by crawling around in their roof. Dubbed a ‘cat burglar’ the man woke the family at about midnight on Tuesday 15 August. The family then ran onto the road on Averne Street to flag down police. Narre Warren police officers were on patrol on the area when the distressed family caught their attention. The alleged offender attempted to flee the scene, but was arrested by police nearby a short time later. He is expected to face the Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 16 August.

Woman hits the jackpot! A Hampton Park woman has hit the jackpot, taking home almost $750,000 in a recent TattsLotto draw. The retiree, who chose to remain anonymous, took home a whopping total of $723,182 when her ticket struck in two separate draws. Woman hospitalised after crash By Victoria Stone-Meadows A woman in her fifties has been hospitalised following a smash in Lynbrook, where a small truck ran into the back of her car. Police believe a white tippertrailer truck was travelling northwest on the South Gippsland Highway about 4.30pm on Wednesday 9 August when the
crash happened. The small truck ran into the back of a stationary Toyota Corolla, pushing in turn into another truck near the intersection of the highway and Lynbrook Boulevard. The sole occupant of the Corolla, a 58-year-old woman from Hampton, suffered minor inju-

Casey Councillor Geoff Ablett has distanced himself from accusations he was involved in the ’lobster with a mobster’ dinner with Victorian Liberal Party leader Matthew Guy. Earlier this week, media reported that a recording was made of Liberal Party official Barrie Macmillan speaking with members of the Madafferi family. The recording allegedly indicates that the Madafferi family were interested in making a donation to Mr Guy’s 2018 State Election campaign in small quantities to mask the origin of the donations. The dinner at The Lobster Cave in Beaumaris was organised by Mr Madafferi’s cousin and Clyde vegetable grower Frank Lamattina. The dinner was attended by Mr Guy, Mr Madafferi, Cr Ablett and Mr Lamattina. While Cr Ablett admitted he was at the dinner he said he knew nothing about political donations and was only there in his capacity as a councillor for the City of Casey. “I was in attendance; I was invited by Frank Lamattina to talk about issues in relation to vegetable growing, transport and problems with the markets,” he said. “That’s why I was there, as a councillor, I didn’t know who else was going and I wasn’t introduced to anyone else, I wouldn’t know them if I fell over them.” Police have alleged in the

Cr Ablett is a member of the Liberal Party of Victoria and has previously run for the state seat of Cranbourne but said he has nothing to do with the workings of the party. “For me it was just another meeting to learn more about people in my area,” Cr Ablett said. “I don’t know anyone connected to the mafia and I don’t appreciate papers trying to create a link between me and the mob; it’s just absurd. “I went along in my role as councillor, trying to be the best councillor I can be, that’s where it finishes.

“There is no connection with me or other people that were there ... I am not involved with state or federal politics anymore.” It is believed while at the dinner, Mr Guy and Mr Madafferi dined on lobster and expensive bottles of Penfolds Grange, Cr Ablett said he did not partake in any dining decadence. “I didn’t have a conversation about anything other than vegetable markets and certainly didn’t hear anything about money mentioned,” he said. “I didn’t have a drink or a meal and was feeling a bit crook so I told Frank, then sat at the other end of the table and then went home.” Barrie Macmillan has since stepped down from his role as Dunkley electorate conference secretary and Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has said the claims made about the dinner will be investigated by federal authorities.

In the club at Delray By Narelle Coulter Villawood Properties launched construction of a $5 million residents' club at its Delaray estate in Clyde North on Wednesday 9 August. Club Delaray is the fifth residents’ club financed by the development giant. When completed the club will include a cafe, swimming pools, function space, tennis court, gymnasium, community garden and parents’ room. Villawood executive director Rory Costelloe said the club would ultimately become the property of those living at the estate and managed through an owners’ corporation. He hoped the club would help foster a sense of community among Delaray residents. “The belief at Villawood Properties has always been that there’s more to creating a living, breathing community than housing allotments there must be opportunities for people to get to know their neighbours and build a sense of connection," Mr Costelloe said. “People come from from all different suburbs and many from overseas to this community. They don’t know their neighbours. Our job is to form that community. “One in five residents in Casey are immigrants. That they can belong to a community is a real drawcard to these buyers." Among those looking forward to the completion of the club are Max and Pat Janssen. The Janssens moved into their new home at Delaray in January. They were the sixth residents to move into Delaray. “We saw the land from the highway and knew we wanted to live here," Max said. “When they told us about the club and what we would be getting we thought it was fantastic.“ “We are looking forward to the completion of the club with a real sense of anticipation and excitement," Pat added. The couple said they would definitely use the gymnasium and were looking forward to enjoying a cup of coffee in the cafe. Max has already thrown himself into the Clyde community as a new recruit to the town’s fire brigade. He said a sense of community was already forming at Delaray as more and more residents moved into the estate. “People are already helping each other and making contact through the Delaray website." Pat said she and Max also enjoyed getting to know new neighbours at “slab parties" which were held whenever a slab was poured. “It is a nice community and a new page in our lives," Pat said. Club Delaray is expected to be completed by the middle of next year.
Police car rammed By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Narre Warren man is facing a string of charges after allegedly throwing a beer can at police and ramming a police car while evading an intercept in Mulgrave. The 20-year-old was observed by police driving erratically in a Magna on Princes Highway, Mulgrave about 9.50pm on 14 August. He then evaded police attempts to intercept him and threw the can at the police vehicle. A police officer received a minor injury when the Magna allegedly side-swiped a police car stopped in the Magna’s path on a service slip road on the highway. The vehicle was again spotted travelling in erratic fashion and entering a take-away drivethrough at Springvale Junction about 10.10pm, police say. When police tried to speak to the driver, he allegedly tried to drive off and struck part of the food outlet and a stationary car. The man is expected to be charged with offences including evading police, dangerous driving, reckless conduct endangering a person, assaulting police and possessing cannabis. He is also expected to be charged with refusing a breath test, handling stolen goods and discharging a beer can.

Casey goes Funds’ full bloom philharmonic from Daffodil Day Business profiles
A new philharmonic orchestra has launched in the city of Casey and is looking for new members to help them bring music to the people. Casey Philharmonic Orchestra has just commenced rehearsals in Berwick, and aims to fill a gap in orchestral music opportunities for people living in the outer South-East of Melbourne. Orchestra president and founder, Belinda Bolger said while the region had many talented musicians, a full orchestra meant offering something new. “Casey and surrounds have several established concert
bands, but a symphony orchestra has been missing for many years,” she said. “It seems a fitting time with the opening of Bunjil Place to give our professional musicians, advanced amateurs and aspiring students an ensemble to grow with.” The group is hoping to give emerging and established musicians a new outlet and offer both orchestral and chamber music to the Casey-Cardinia community. “It’s a once in a lifetime experience and I feel honoured to have this opportunity,” principal flautist, Cassandra Cooper said.
Kent Ross is one of the conductors of the new orchestra and said he was looking forward to bringing musicians from all over Casey together in one place. “What makes this experience so special is the people that put it all together,” he said. The Casey Community Orchestra meets weekly during school terms on Thursdays from 7.30 to 10.15pm in the Jean Russell Centre at Nossal High School. Marjorie offers mobile mammogram By Victoria Stone-Meadows Cranbourne women are being urged to take advantage of BreastScreen Victoria’s mobile mammogram vehicle. The bright pink van, Marjorie, will be parked out the front of the Cranbourne Library until Friday 25 August, offering free breast checks to women in the area.

BreastScreen Victoria CEO Vicki Pridmore said Marjorie was one of only two vans that travelled the country and offered a convenient option for women in Casey to have their breasts checked. “This visit to Cranbourne has been organised to ensure women in this part of Melbourne have access to a potentially life-saving mammogram,”

There is a very small percentage of builders out there (and by small, I can only think of one!) that actually include everything in a home. And by everything, I mean inside the home and outside the home! If you are hunting for a price point because you need to meet a specific budget, it is important to know what is going to cost you big money. For example, a driveway can cost upwards of $4000 for a simple plain concrete driveway. A fence can be the most expensive per lineal meter item! Right now bank finance is “cheap” interest rates are low which means, based on historical standards, repayments are quite low. While changes have occurred they are good ones - forcing people to pay off the principal of their loan while also managing interest is a positive thing. So, keeping this in mind, it is much easier and more affordable to include the items which will be very expensive for you later. Be mindful, however, that builders who choose to sell you a shell will charge you significantly more to add in these items later. This is where they make most of their money. So, when you get seduced by a low ball base price for a 20+ square design, keep in mind that the slab grade they have included in their advertised price is going to need to be upgraded on your site.
If you thought you were getting stone bench tops, think again. And if you want them you will know you are paying for them. So, where can we avoid all this inclusion heartbreak? Let’s go back to the start - in the display. When you sit down with whichever builder after walking through their house, you need to ask a very important question what is the ‘as displayed’ price? When they give you the price, ask them if a driveway, a fence, the façade and the slab are included in that base price. Ask the builder if they put noggins behind their toilet and towel rail holders. Ask them how many coats of paint are included internally. If you expect to pay peanuts for a house, chances are you’ll get one fit for a monkey. Ask the right questions at the start and you’ll get all the information you need to make a smart decision later.

Waste under new management As residents become more and more conscious of their personal impact on the environment, it’s important people have confidence in local waste management services. Operated for more than a decade by the local Atkins family, the Cardinia Waste and Recyclers transfer station, located just off the Princes Highway in Pakenham, has been acquired by leading Victorian scrap metal company Future Metals Recycling. With depots in Dandenong, Hallam and Shepparton, privately owned Future Metals Recycling is committed to reduc-
ing its environmental impact throughout its comprehensive waste management activities. It is also an accredited carbon neutral business. Managing director Tyrone Landsman said that since taking over the Cardinia Waste and Recyclers transfer station and Pak Bin Hire in late 2016, Future Metals Recycling had modernised all operating equipment and made substantial efficiency improvements to bring it into line with its sustainability policy. In exciting news for the region, the company has plans to significantly improve the infra-
structure of the transfer station over the next 12 months. “We will be spending more than $3 million on the project and, importantly, it will create local jobs during the construction phase,” Mr Landsman said. “The Atkins family was very involved in the community and we’re committed to keeping that local involvement going.” Future Metals Recycling currently recovers and recycles a large proportion of waste coming on site and the planned Cardinia Waste and Recyclers project will further increase its recycling ability to reduce waste going to landfill.

New Ligt dawning By Nick Creely Losing two of the great club cricketers that Victoria has to offer in the offseason is sure to cause inevitable short term pain for Cranbourne. The shock defections of premiership skipper Steven Spoljaric (Springvale South) and Matt Chasemore (Berwick) has left a gaping hole of over 1000 runs and 40 wickets for the 2017/18 season. But under the guidance of the club’s new Turf 1 skipper Lucas Ligt, the club will turn to the future and rebuild the culture from the lowest to the highest grades. “The young guys are really excited about the idea of the club being up to them - a lot of the kids were nervous when we heard the announcement (Spoljaric and Chasemore leaving) because they thought the club might be chasing more players again,” he said. “Since they’ve learnt that the club is backing them in and rebuilding over a few years - similar to what Hallam’s done - there has been genuine excitement. “Pre-season attendance has been up there with the best I’ve seen in four years - we’ve had three nets at Icon full and people haven’t been able to bowl because we’ve had too many people - there is a great feeling around the place.” But he admits the loss of the gun duo, as well as keeper Jordan Cleland to Berwick came as a bit of a shock. “Losing Jordan (Cleland) as well wasn’t ideal but honestly, that’s fine if he wants to go, but Chasemore and Spoljaric are a bit different obviously,” he said. And while Ligt, 25, expects there to be growing pains for his young side, the club has set goals for what it expects to achieve in 2017/18. “We don’t want to get relegated obviously, and we’ve picked about five sides that we feel we can beat if we play properly - the core group has already spoken about the goals this season, and we just want to play a really basic and smart brand of cricket,” he said. “We haven’t got a guy like Spoljaric who swings it both ways anymore,
Lucas Ligt is ready to lead Cranbourne into a new era. 163598 so it’s just about being smart with the ball and batting out our overs.” While there are plenty of youngsters across the grades looking to make their mark, Ligt identified a few players he expects to step up to the top level this season. “Nivin Sathyajith is one who really excites us and we’re looking forward to seeing what he can do - he’ll be given a real shot this year and is aware of

that and working really hard at training,” he said. “Jake Harrington had an awesome final game last year against Springy South, and that’s what we’ve seen he is capable of - he is also aware he has a real senior role this season and will need to bat more. “Tim Fathers is a really good bowler but was unlucky we had some big names, and the same with Paddy Boyle
as well - they will be our main bowling attack.” And Ligt himself is ready to evolve into a leader he believes the club needs in its rebuild. “I’m going to be a lot more approachable and let them have a lot more of a say, but it just means I will be a lot harsher at the same time - if you want to make your own plans, you have to follow through with it,“
he said. Ligt also believes Spoljaric’s Springvale South and Chasemore’s Berwick are likely to be battling it out for this year’s Turf 1 premiership. “I think everyone knows Springy South and Berwick will be in the grand final, unless one of them knocks the other out earlier,” he said.
Grand final victory to Cavaliers By Nick Creely BIG V REVIEW - GRAND FINAL YOUTH LEAGUE MEN TWO After a lacklustre performance on Saturday night in game two of the grand final series with Collingwood, the Casey Cavaliers bounced back stunningly on Sunday to be titled the champions of 2017. After taking out the first of three grand final matches by six-points, Collingwood destroyed the Cavs on Saturday night 68-95 to square the ledger with one match left to decide the champions. In front of a packed home crowd
at Casey Stadium on Sunday afternoon, both sides were desperate to get off to a good start. Some hot shooting by Collingwood allowed them to take a slender two-point lead at the first break, and warning bells were ringing when they extended the lead out to seven at half time. But another momentum shift allowed the Cavs to get the game on their terms in the third quarter, stealing back the lead via some strong work by Jordan Gooiker (17 points and seven boards) and Hunter Marks (13 points and 15 boards). The Cavs kept pushing and hitting their threes and eventually extended
the margin to eight, before the All Stars rallied to have one last effort at stealing back the lead. With just 39 seconds left on the clock, the Cavs led by just a point and were obviously worried of being overrun by the team carrying the momentum. The Cavs attempted to ice the game on the three-point line with 27 seconds to go but missed, allowing the All Stars to have one last chance. But holding firm and with the crowd behind them, the Cavs held on and when the siren rang, the crowd erupted to the stunning realisation they were Youth League Two Men premiers of 2017.

With nothing less than a win being a failure for the middle-road Comets, The Barkers - who sit down the bottom and face relegation in 2018 - stunningly scored in just the third minute of the match via Maxim Solovyev. The Comets then found the equaliser through Velibor Mitrovic just before half time, then ran over the top, scoring two goals in the second half to walk away with the win. STATE LEAGUE 2 - SOUTH EAST The push for promotion continues for local sides Doveton and Berwick who both had wins at home on the weekend. Doveton easily accounted for Heatherton United 5-0, while Berwick City fought hard to run over the top of another promotion contender Mazenod United 3-1. Berwick were without several key players due to injury and suspension and went into the game with eight teenagers in what was skipper Orlando Mejias’ 200th club game. In what has been a bitterly disappointing season, the Eagles will be praying for its alignment in 2018 with the Casey Demons and Melbourne Football Club to begin sooner rather than later. With coach Sein Clearihan relinquishing himself of the role effectively immediately, the Eagles’ tough week ended with a 70-point loss to Melbourne Uni at the University Main Oval. The Mugars and Eagles fought out a fairly tight first quarter, with the hosts holding a slender 12-point advantage at quarter time. But the difference in class and experience shone through, as the Mugars slammed on six goals in the second quarter to break the game wide open. The Eagles also managed to hit the scoreboard with a goal to Jasmine Grierson, who continually provided a presence up forward. But there was no way back for the Eagles, who saw the margin extend out all the way out to 70-points before the visitors stemmed the bleeding with strong defensive work late. Star AFL forward Moana Hope (three goals) caused headaches all day, Louise Stephenson was best afield and kicked a couple of goals, while talented athlete Emma Kearney was a handful for Cranbourne. AFL-bound Eagle Darcy Guttridge was the best for the losing visitors, while Grierson (two goals) was the sole goal-scorer and Bianca Jakobsson continued on a late season flurry of form. The going doesn’t get any easier for the third last Eagles, who will finish off the season with clashes against Diamond Creek (second) and St Kilda (fourth).

Demons won’t halt on march to finals By Nick Creely VICTORIAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE REVIEW - ROUND 17 Casey’s stunning charge towards a top four spot continues to gather momentum, and after knocking off the Northern Blues by 37-points on Saturday, remain percentage out of the four with just two rounds to play. At the Casey Fields fortress where they have still yet to lose a game this season, the Demons set the win up with a completely dominant first half. Off the back of a ruthless midfield group that denied the Blues any freedom with ball in hand, the Dees benefited in attack in the first quarter, kicking five unanswered goals to open up a 29-point quarter time lead. With Bayley Fritsch (four goals) and Yillber Zijai (three goals) electric in the forward half, the Demons extended the lead out to 46-points at half time. The damage had already been done by half time as the Blues started to find some more open football in the third quarter, but the Dees held firm in defence in the second half to slow the momentum down of the opposition and defy any potential comebacks. Porter on AFL State Combine list By Nick Creely Officer sensation and Gippsland Power midfielder Callum Porter’s AFL draft dream is still alive after being named in the AFL State Combine later this season. After missing out on the AFL Draft Combine, Porter - one of the favourites for the Morrish Medal in the TAC Cup - has been rewarded for a stunning season despite missing out on making the final Vic Country side. Porter has amassed some elite numbers in 2017 for the Power, averaging 21 disposals and 8.2 tackles in the midfield. Berwick boy and Dandenong Stingray forward Riley D’Arcy is another big name TAC Cup player to make the combine list. The 17-year-old power forward has been one of the TAC Cup’s most consistent sharpshooters, kicking 34 goals for the Rays (third in the competition). After dominating in the Vic Country trial matches earlier this season, D’Arcy was desperately unlucky not to make the final cut, but has gone back to the 'Rays to work on his craft. Local VFL forward Bayley Fritsch is the name most likely to be on an AFL list next season after an excellent season with the Demons. The medium-sized forward with one of the VFL’s most natural setshot techniques, Fritsch has managed to 32 goals from his 15 games so far, and was the VFL’s best in the state game against the WAFL earlier this season. Double chance for ’Pies By David Nagel Narre Warren is looming as a serious threat to claim its first premiership since 2013 after the Magpies continued their stellar run of form with a 42-point victory over Doveton. The Magpies’ first victory at Robinson Oval since 2014 secured a coveted double-chance and confirmed Heath Black’s team as the genuine article ahead of this year’s finals series. They have now won five on the trot, including victories over fellow finals contenders Beaconsfield (79 points), Cranbourne (19 points) and now the Doves. Only Berwick will take a winning feeling against the Magpies into September, but even the Wickers may have inadvertently helped with the impetus for this late-season surge. They thumped the Magpies by 49 points in a one-sided contest at Edwin Flack Reserve in round 12. “We had stern and open words after that game, the players were left in doubt as to my feelings,” Black said. “And, while we can’t quite put our finger on it, things have definitely turned around since then. Simon Goosey’s men found themselves 26-points adrift early in the second term before unleashing an unanswered six-goal burst to fight their way into the contest. Cranbourne led by a point at three-quarter time before kicking four goals to two in the final term to lock up second place on the ladder. Khaled Kandakji kicked three for the winners who had Jordy Bertrand and the Osborne brothers -Brandon and Glenn - play great games in defence. Kyle O’Sullivan and Daniel Galante tried hard for Beacy who had firstgamer Jackson Bramich kick a goal with his first kick in senior footy. By David Nagel FINALS fever has come a week early for this year’s premiership contenders with two magnificent games set to round out the South East home-and-away season this Saturday. Cranbourne and Doveton will slug it out at Casey Fields in a precursor to their elimination final at Berwick on 27 August - but even that clash pales into insignificance compared to the main event on the card. Narre Warren and TooradinDalmore, the two dominant teams of the season, level on points, going head to head at Kalora Park with the minor premiership and a week’s rest on the line. Tooradin coach Kelly Andrews knows there’s a huge pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. “We definitely want top spot, we want the week off to freshen up and to fine tune our set ups with an extra training session or two,” Andrews said.
The Seagulls rounded out their preparations by making light work of Hampton Park, winning 55-27 at the Tooradin Rec. Reserve. Alex Duff (goal shooter) and Alex Maher (goal attack) set the scene for the Seagulls in the first quarter, while Ebony Dolan (goal defence) and Jess Maher (goal keeper) were equally adept at the defensive end. The Redbacks were never in the hunt but Brooke Kiely (goal keeper) and Karli Foster (GD) can hold their heads high after limiting the potential damage. The remainder of round 17 produced some great action, with Cranbourne’s one-goal win over Beaconsfield the star attraction. Cranbourne started magnificently, scoring only 11 goals in the first quarter, but restricting their thirdplaced opponents to just five goals for the term. The gun-duo of Tara Cecil (GK) and Sharni Lambden (GD) was back in business, making life extremely difficult for the like

When talented Kangaroos youngster Jesse Longmuir converted from the top of the goal-square, at the 21-minute mark of the third term, an upset looked on the cards - the Kangas 10-points ahead, 5.6 to 2.14. But the Wickers responded in style with early last-quarter goals to Tom Brennan and Harry Money, breaking the game open and keeping their perfect season intact. Berwick’s backline really stood tall when the pressure was on in the second half with Luke Sheppard, Ash Smith and Will Arthurson providing plenty of drive from half back. James Canty and Luke Smaluch were best for the Kangas, who finish with six wins for the season. And Tooradin brushed aside a plucky Hampton Park by 156 points at Westernport Oval. Andrew Dean kicked eight and Kyle Van Der Pluym seven for the Gulls who had Nick Lang on fire with five of his own. The Redbacks kicked four goals in the second term, clearly their best output for the season, with Tim Ziegeler slotting two. Pakenham had the bye.

issue beyond doubt. Chloe Phillips (GS) and Gabby Dwyer (GA) were sensational for the winners, while Chelsea Imanisani (GA) held the Doves attacking end together in the absence of Rhani Samason. Coach Liz Edwards (WA) was also impressive for the Doves. And ROC has momentarily jumped into sixth place on the ladder after winning its third game from its last four starts, 48-45, against Berwick at Starling Road. The difference between the teams was the third quarter, where players like Georgie Douglas (wing defence), Ash Barnett (C) and Courtney Linhart (GS) played some of their best netball for the season. Linhart scored 10 goals in the third term, stretching the Kangas out to a five-goal lead at the final break. Berwick lifted, through Sarah Nash (C), Itagia Amataga (GS) and Olivia Macente (WA) ... but the damage had already been done. Pakenham had the bye.
