“As we travel around the world, we constantly look at small organisations that have certain qualities,” he said.

“They need to be ethical, caring for the community, and they need to care for the health of their community- after spending time with them, I discovered they had all three qualities.”

Tania Bevan, manager at DRERS said they were ‘honoured’ to receive the donation and to have him as patron and that the donation would be a big help in improving and delivering services.

“We feel very honoured and extremely pleased ... it will certainly help us in providing resources we need to help those people at risk or who are homeless.”

“We aim to help people to become self-reliant, reducing their financial and emotional stress so that our community can become healthier and stronger,” Ms Bevan said.

Homeless week that highlights the need for homeless support ended on Sunday 13 August, and Mr Wollen’s donation was a timely reminder that these organisations need the help of the community.

Mr Wollen said that it was a community responsibility to support an organisation that helped disadvantaged members of the community.

“No business or organisation succeeds in a big theatre, unless it succeeds in its local area; I really call on everyone in the Dandenong Ranges to get behind this organisation which I’m going to be very proud to represent.”

An emergency relief centre is just as its name suggests - a place established to provide support and essential needs to persons affected by an emergency.

One of those relief centres which certainly lives up to its name has been duly recognised for their ongoing commitment to helping the wider community in the Dandenong Ranges, and on 2 August Australian philanthropist Philip Wollen, OAM, visited the Dandenong Ranges Emergency Relief Service (DRERS) to commend them on their amazing work.

Not only Did Mr Woolen praise DRERS for their work helping the community, but also he accepted the position of patron and donated $10,000 to the not-for-profit organisation.

Located in Belgrave, DRERS offers support to people who are homeless and disadvantaged. That support comes in the form of food, food vouchers, payment of prescriptions, clothing vouchers, assistance with paying bills, advocacy, referrals and crisis counselling.

Mr Wollen, a previous Australian of the Year winner said “DRERS was the best way” to help the hundreds of people in the hills area who do not have enough to eat, and hoped the hill community would support the organisation and the important work they did.

“I am profoundly impressed by the work of DRERS, a small and vibrant organisation which punches above its weight,” he said.

“Their compassion and commitment to the most vulnerable members of our community is astonishing.”

Mr Wollen supports some 500 humanitarian projects in over 40 countries and heard of the charitable work that DRERS was undertaking through a close friend.

He said he felt honoured to have been offered the position of patron, and said that he and his wife Trix would continue to offer support to the organ-

Keep on recycling - please

By Kath Gannaway Yarra Ranges Council has moved to reassure residents that their efforts to recyle are not in vain, and is urging them to keep recycling.

In the meantime, O’Shannassy Ward Councillor Jim Child says the issue is about more than glass and there needs to be more investigation into the State Government’s landfill levy and how that is spent.

The council’s message on recycling followed a shocking ABC Four Corners report on Monday, 7 August, that revealed hundreds of thousands of tonnes of recycled glass was being stockpiled, and some dumped in landfill.

The council then made inquiries of its recycle provider, Visy.

At its meeting the next night (8 Au-

gust) they issued a press release stating: “Recyclable materials collected from bins across Yarra Ranges do not end up in landfill with other rubbish, due to the strict processes by council’s recycling provider, Visy."

Information provided included that glass from recycling bins was sorted by colour and sent to glass and bottle manufacturers and broken glass found in bins, classified as ‘fine material’ was separated in that process.

Of the 17,000 tonnes of recyclable materials placed in Yarra Ranges Council bins, more than 5200 was glass material.

The council report said that about 40 per cent of Visy’s glass collection was sorted as fine material and, due to supply exceeding current demand, this material was stockpiled until appropri-

ate markets were found.

Director Environment and Engineering, Mark Varmalis, said council would continue to work with Visy to advocate for new ways of utilising this glass, to reduce the amount held onsite and ensure no recyclable materials end up in landfill.

Cr Jim Child is council’s representative on the Metropolitan Waste Local Government Forum.

He said he moved a motion over a month ago that the Environment Minister, Lily D’Ambrosio provide an explanation of what the funds raised through the landfill levy were being used for.

“There is close to $500 million sitting in there and in the last budget papers money was coming out of that fund to buy trams and do all sorts of

things that has nothing to do with waste.

The Four Corners program also revealed concerns about general garbage going into landfill.

“When we see the things that we saw on Four Corners last night, it starts to make you wonder what is our levy being spent on,” Cr Child told the Mail.

The Victorian Auditor General’s Office is currently undertaking an audit of the landfill levy.

The objective of the report, which will cover the 2017-'18 financial year, is to determine whether Victoria’s landfill levy system, including the Sustainability Fund, is reducing waste impacts on the environment, influencing investment in infrastructure for resource recovery, and encouraging innovative alternatives for waste treatment.

Career comes back to the beginning

By Bonny Burrows Cockatoo Primary School principal Darrelyn Boucher says she never had a calling to be a teacher.

But when she was granted a studentship by the government, which paid her to go to teacher’s college, she decided to give it a go.

“And from the minute I had my first teaching practicum, I knew it was the job for me,” Ms Boucher said.

Ms Boucher’s 40-year career has come full circle, starting and ending at Cockatoo Primary School.

She began at the school in the 1970s as a fresh faced teacher who shared a love of ABBA and a class cat with her students.

“I didn’t even know where Cockatoo was, but here I was starting at this very, very tiny school of 120 students,” Ms Boucher said.

“It was a very rural community and the kids were real country kids.

They’d come to school with mud on their boots.”

She described her first year teaching as “a really good year” in a fun school with young staff members.

Despite her love of Cockatoo Primary School, the next year saw Ms Boucher move to Croydon Primary School after purchasing land in the area.

She taught at the Croydon and Silverton Primary School in Noble Park until 1986, when “fate” drew her back to Cockatoo.

“We had bought land in Emerald so I applied to all the local schools but got the job here,” Ms Boucher said.

“It must have been meant to be.

I’m a great believer in fate.”

Since her return to Cockatoo Primary School, and despite a six-year hiatus during which she took family leave, Ms Boucher has risen up the ranks from teacher to assistant principal to now-principal.

However, Ms Boucher said the move from teaching to leading required a big push from her colleagues.

“Two years after returning from family leave, the assistant principal retired and I stepped up,” she said.

“I had a lot of pressure from staff to apply, but I didn’t want to leave the classroom.”

She eventually “gave in” and took the job, but the school had other plans.

Shortly after commencing her assistant principal role her boss came in and said he was having a hip replacement, followed by six months off and then he was retiring.

“He said ‘you’re going to be acting principal’. I laughed,” Ms Boucher said.

But aware Ms Boucher would likely decline the position, he had made prior arrangements.

“He pulled out a letter from behind his back and said ‘too late, I’ve got the region’s approval’,” Ms Boucher said.

“Twenty-one years later and I’m still here.”

Despite her apprehension in making the move from the classroom to the top job, Ms Boucher wouldn’t have it any other way.

She’s found a way to balance her love of both roles, thanks in part to the school’s close knit community and supportive teaching staff.

“I love getting into the classroom, but I also love the work I do,”

“There have been ongoing issues with the landfill levy system, namely, its transparency and management and whether the funds expenditure is meeting the system’s intended legislative purposes,” the VAGO says of the issues it will look at.

Cr Child said there were numerous and serious issues revealed on the Four Corners program which were worrying in the extreme.

“It worried me ... of course it worried me, and that’s why I believe there should be a full investigation.

“This (VAGO audit) is something I’ve been asking for for ages and I’m glad it’s in place in Victoria,” he said.

Firearm amnesty

Darrelyn Boucher, Cockatoo Primary School principal, receives her 40 years of service certificate from Education Minister James Merlino.

Ms Boucher said.

“I still have a great connection to the kids. I make an effort to make sure I know who my kids are. I really value that, having that connection with our kids.”

The principal was one of three local educators recently acknowledge by the Department of Education for four decades of service.

While Ms Boucher “doesn’t like fuss”, she said she was pleased with the recognition of her hard work.

“It was nice to be recognised

and my family was very proud,” she said.

Despite reaching the milestone, Ms Boucher shows no signs of slowing down.

When asked if retirement was on the cards, Ms Boucher said it was not something she had planned.

“I’m not thinking in that way because I’m always thinking about what I can do next for the school,” Ms Boucher said.

“This place is the blood that courses through my veins.”

Hundreds of firearms have been handed in for registration, sale or destruction in Victoria in the first month of the National Firearms Amnesty.

As of the end of July, 751 firearms had been surrendered in Victoria.

Superintendent Paul Millett of the Licensing and Regulation Division said this was 751 fewer firearms that would otherwise be at risk of ending up in the wrong hands.

“We have seen a good response to the amnesty so far,” he said.

“Every unwanted or unregistered firearm or weapon that we can destroy or register is another step towards a safer Victoria.

“We encourage everyone to think about any firearms or weapons that they have around the house or in storage and to take action by surrendering them to a licensed firearm dealer.

In addition to firearms, a number of other items have been surrendered including swords, a crossbow, ammunition and imitation firearms.

Victorians have until 30 September to surrender unregistered and unwanted firearms, ammunition and weapons to licensed firearms dealers without fear of prosecution.

Anyone surrendering firearms, weapons or ammunition during the amnesty should surrender to a licensed firearms dealer and not directly to local police.

The clean-up crew

By Derek Schlennstedt The Dandenong Ranges has always been known for its beauty and close vicinity to lush forests, but like any location where nature and humans co-exist, the natural surroundings are often impacted upon.

That impact comes in the form of litter and rubbish, which can often be seen floating around Dandenong Ranges townships but two Belgrave residents are doing their best to mitigate the amount of rubbish left on the streets in their hometown.

Mike and Jan Muller have lived in Belgrave since 1985 and in the last six months have spent five days of each week cleaning up the area surrounding Belgrave.

Speaking to The Mail, Jan said they were dedicated to clean-up Belgrave, which had become an eyesore for them on their regular walks.

“We started out on a smaller scale, with just a bag and a stick, and did between our home and Belgrave and then back - just cleaning up our walk,” Jan said.

“Eventually there was too much and it was overflowing and we had to empty it two or three times so we got a little shopping trolley.”

“We just found it offensive to see the place being trashed with rubbish everywhere.”

The couple volunteer their time and use a shopping trolley which is emptied two or three times on their daily round.

Trek was a tough one

“90 per cent of it is cans and bottles, the rest is receipts and an awful lot of cigarette butts,” they said.

Their two-hour trip around Belgrave sees them cleaning up areas around the Cameo, the Cameo car park, the Safeway car park, both sides of Belgrave main street and finally also parts of Blacksmith Way - an urban street with artwork which

they said is now overflowing with trash.

“They have the lovely wall art and mural, and I’ve seen people come off the train to come and look at it but there’s trash everywhere and the bins are overflowing so they go up to the main street instead,” said Jan. “It’s quite disappointing as it really could be a feature for Belgrave.”

The dedicated duo have no plans to stop and have urged people to

think before throwing items onto the street, including in Belgrave which has bins every 50 metres.

“At the very least our community is cleaner and maybe people will take a bit of notice and stop littering or think twice before dropping rubbish and perhaps even pick-up a bit of rubbish.”

“If everyone picked up a bit of rubbish then there wouldn’t be this problem.”

10-year wait for the lights to change

By Derek Schlennstedt It’s been 10 years since Karen Dettmann first began campaigning for a pedestrian crossing to be placed at York Road, Mt Evelyn between Karen Court and Hawking Road. Finally, at midday on 11 August, Karen took her first safe steps across the pedestrian crossing which she had campaigned so hard to get.

Now, having retired from the position of disability manager at the Yarra View Nursery, she said she could retire in peace knowing that employees from Yarra View, and students from Mount Evelyn Christian School (MECS) could cross the road safely.

“I’ve have been lobbying for approximately 10 years to the different politicians who were in power at the time and whoever I could talk to and it just took an awful long time,” she said, “So now I’m just so grateful ... I

can rest in my retirement knowing that the people I work with and the students close by can cross the road and go to school and work safely.”

The pedestrian crossing with lights was implemented following stats that showed 25,000 vehicles using York Road daily and various close calls and accidents taking place near the location.

The Victorian Government allocated $490,000 worth of upgrades including replacing the existing flagged crossing outside Mount Evelyn Christian School with new pedestrian operated signals, and the replacement and upgrade of the bus shelter on the northern side near the nursery, as well as relocating it to ensure pedestrians crossing York Road will have more direct and safer access to bus services.

“This is a really, really busy street and it’s quite dangerous for people to cross this road, and that’s

why Karen had been advocating for so long to get a pedestrian crossing here so we could get the Yarra View workers safely across the road and also students attending MECS safely onto the school grounds.”

Montrose Health couple, Alison Bowen and Brenton Jukes completed a mountainous 150-kilometre coast-to-coast trek across East Timor this month, to raise awareness and funds for heart disease.

The couple raised more than $3000 toward the trek’s goal of $20,000, which will allow the charity East Timor Hearts Fund to provide a young patient with life-saving heart surgery in Australia.

Alison Bowen, a paramedic stationed at Healesville, and her partner Brenton Jukes, a patient transport officer with Wilson Medic One were just a few doctors and medics from around Australia who took part in the trek.

Alison had previously hiked Mt Kilimanjaro in Tanzania and Everest Base Camp in Nepal, but described the expedition as one of the toughest she had faced.

She was thrilled to have completed the challenge with her partner, and said the trek was also a bit of a ‘reality check’ for the both of them ...

“Australia is blessed with a first-class health care system, but things are very different for our neighbours in Timor-Leste, with children and young people suffering and dying prematurely from preventable and treatable conditions, such as rheumatic heart disease,” Alison said.

“As a paramedic, it was quite confronting to see first-hand some of the significant health and social challenges facing Timor-Leste, but I’m so glad to have had the opportunity, in a small way, to be part of the solution.”

The duo were supported by local guides, and endured walking 10 hours a day with full 20-kilogram packs, from the capital of Dili on the north coast, to the small fishing village of Betano on the south coast.

During the trek they endured freezing conditions on Mt Ramelau - over 3000 metres above seas level; and heat and humidity in the lowlands.

The trek has raised nearly $17,000 of its $20,000 target to help bring a rheumatic heart disease sufferer to Australia for life-saving treatment .

At the last election, the Turnbull Government made a clear commitment to give all Australians a say on the matter of same sex marriage by way of a plebiscite.

Same sex marriage is no ordinary legislative issue, and that is why it is the right thing to give the nation a chance to have its say. Nothing could be more democratic.

After the election the Prime Minister introduced the legislation into the House of Representatives to enable the plebiscite to be held in February of this year.

But it wasn’t, because Labor and the Greens combined to defeat it in the Senate.

They both did so despite supporting just such a compulsory attendance plebiscite in the past.

This week the government again sought to pass its legislation for a plebiscite in the Senate. Again, Labor and the Greens voted to prevent the Australian people having their say.

By Derek Schlennstedt Puffing Billy continues to attract local and international visitors alike, with more than 487,000 passengers flocking to the iconic steam engine for the 2016’17 period.

This marks the fifth consecutive record year for the popular tourist attraction with 487,237 passengers recorded in the 2016-’17 financial year - an increase of 17 per cent on the previous year.

In another record-breaking milestone Puffing Billy is now the highest patronage of any narrow gauge steam heritage railway in the world that is a volunteerbased, not for profit operation.

Puffing Billy Railway CEO, John Robinson, said the continued growth could be attributed to the increase in visitors from the Asian market, as well as regular repeat visitation from passengers who he said loved the local icon.

“The Asian market now represents over half of overall visitors, and we are working really hard to ensure they have an enjoyable experience at Puffing Billy,” Mr Robinson said.

The Treasurer has directed the Australian Bureau of Statistics to ask, on a voluntary basis, all Australians on the electoral roll their view on whether or not the law should be changed to allow same sex couples to marry.

Indigenous take on celestial landscape

By Derek Schlennstedt Emerald Secondary College will host astronomer extraordinaire Javier Mejuto from South America and Duane Hamacher from Australia as part of Science Week on Friday 18 August.

Astronomers Dr Hamacher and Dr Mejuto specialise in historical indigenous astronomy, and will take part in a presentation around the importance of astronomy in linking how ancient indigenous societies interpreted the celestial landscape.

Brad Gibbs, science domain leader and Year 12 physics teacher at Emerald Secondary College, said the school had been working with the Mount Burnett Observatory, and had a popular astronomy club at the school.

“A lot of this is because of the Mount Burnett Observatory, and we’ve gotten a lot of support from them ... they’ve really given the students opportunities they would normally never get.”

The astronomy club is also attracting all students to the sciences, and Brad said astronomy was one of the few sciences that attracted both boys and girls.

“One of the biggest pushes is to get girls interested in science.”

“In my physics class, we have two girls and 15 boys in physics, whereas with the astronomy club it’s a 50/50 split,” he said.

Dr Mejuto will present a talk on Mayan astronomy.

Dr Hamacher told the Mail that astronomy garners interest, and is becoming more popular due to its ability to mix theoretical with handson learning.

“If we are to look to our future,

it’s important we look at our past and so this is why we look at Aboriginal and Mayan cultures to find out how they looked at and understood the stars,” Dr Hamacher said.

Funding is halved

By Wendy Williamson Yarra Ranges Council endorsed 10 projects for submission to the State Government’s 2017/'19 Growing Suburbs Fund, on Tuesday 8 August.

Through this fund, the government is making available $50 million for the 10 councils on the rural/metropolitan interface to help deliver important community projects.

In previous years, the government allocated $50 million for one year.

This sum has effectively been halved, with $50 million now available over two years, so the competition for funding is likely to be intense.

The guidelines indicate that preference will be given to larger projects, community partnerships and co-contributions which demonstrate local need, including social disadvantage.

Council endorsed several projects for submission to the 2017/'19 Growing Suburbs Fund. They include Monbulk community and sports pavilion; Warburton Community Recreation Precinct; Burrinja Cultural Centre Redevelopment, Upwey; all-weather redevelopment of Pinks Reserve netball courts at Kilsyth; Warburton Mountain Bike Destination; Queens Park, Healesville District Playspace; Yarra Valley Trail; Ridgewalk; Central Park, Belgrave Heights Playspace and Belgrave Lake Park District Playspace.

The successful projects are expected to be announced from November 2017, with an understanding that councils will match the funding dollar for dollar.

At the meeting, council gave in principle support and approval for matching funding from the Capital Expenditure Program in future years for the delivery of each of those projects that are successful in submission to the Growing Suburbs Fund.

Construction is required to commence no later than September 2018, with projects to be completed within three years.

They should be told that in their suffering, we suffer also, and are determined to give them the best care possible. And that their loneliness can be combatted by our friendship and solidarity.

The Herald Sun reported (1 August) that the Victorian Government has approved rate increases for several local councils above the two per cent set by the Andrews Government.

Towong Shire has been granted permission for a 5.5 per cent increase. This is ridiculous, it implies that they cannot manage their finances. Surely in this day and age this should be a simple task.

Many local councils live beyond their means and Yarra Ranges Council is no different by building very expensive community facilities year in, year out.

Now after the $28 million council offices redevelopment there should be a break on all projects worth more than $1 million for three years so council reserves can be built up.

My advice to Mr Andrews before he allows any other councils to increase their rates, he needs to do a financial audit on councils wanting rate increases and if the CEO is paid more than $ 250,000 a year refuse the request for additional rate income.

As chief executive officer of Fernlea House, Sue Mclvor explained, the staff and volunteers of Fernlea provide a welcoming and compassionate environment for those faced with the challenges of living with dying.

“What sets Fernlea apart is the absolute focus on the individual and their changing needs,” Sue said.

“Within a home-like setting, Fernlea offers activities tailored to the client’s interests and abilities, a home-cooked morning tea and lunch, as well as complementary therapies such as reiki and massage.”

Although Fernlea employs clinical staff, the focus is not on guest’s medical conditions, but on improving their quality of life.

Away from a medical setting, Fernlea House gives guests back some of the control over their lives they have lost through illness.

“Fernlea gives guests a break from being defined by their illness, as well as giving their carers a break from the often relentless and emotional task of looking after a l oved one who is seriously ill,” Sue said.

Fernlea House was opened in 2003 after a long community campaign for accessible palliative care in the hills. That need has now spread, and Fernlea also offers a centre-based service in Berwick on Fridays, as well as caring for people in their own home through its Fernlea Life Care business.

Together, these services enable people with life limiting illness to stay independent and in their own homes for longer.

“Engaging with the community has always been key to Fernlea’s success,” Sue explained.

“More than 60 local volunteers give their time to Fernlea each week, driving guests to and from the centres, providing support to guests or working in the op shop - in fact, Fernlea couldn’t do the work it does without its volunteers!”

Healing the Earth

By Derek Schlennstedt From Warburton’s Peter Downey, the director of Surviving Earth and Animal Mundi, comes Esteem, a documentary about the relationship between our inner psyche and the state of the environment.

The profound documentary, which was hailed as a powerful healing cinema when it featured at the Sustainable Living Centre in Melbourne, will play at the Selby Community House on August 23.

The documentary explores the fundamental reason behind the environmental crisis and furthermore suggests that our destruction of the Earth is a reflection of our psychological and emotional state, and suggests that we can heal this wound.

Downey said it was a regular occurrence at the screening to see various audience members in tears, and described the documentary as eye-opening and raw.

“It’s a vulnerable film and is a bit about how we treat nature,” he said.

“The feedback I get is that it helps other people to express their vulnerability.”

“Our wounding of the Earth is a mirror of humanity’s psychological and emotional wounds, but we can heal this with vulnerability, compassion, love and mindfulness,” he said.

Screening organizer, Karl Williams, said all of Peter’s works were exceptionally vivid and real and that Esteem was no exception.

“His work is that powerful that noone can walk out of his documentaries the same person. And there’s never been a more urgent time to heal the Earth.”

It’s love - with a twist

By Derek Schlennstedt Love songs are generally expected to be all dramatic and emotional, but Sunshine Coast Roots gurus, Bearfoot have taken a different approach with their new single, “Crazy For You" - a knees-up skadriven track with twists and turns, celebrating their own rollercoaster love lives.

To celebrate the release of their new single, Bearfoot will be bringing their distinctive blend of So-Cal, hip hop and dub reggae to Sooki Lounge on 31 August.

Following on from last year’s EP, vocalist Asher Chapman said that they decided to release this favourite, older track, which had been written years before as they all felt now was the perfect time personally.

Vocalist Asher describes the track as a catchy love song spiced up with some epic flavours. It tells a sentimental tale about growing old with someone you love.

“All the guys are from different musical backgrounds such as metal and rock and that comes together to create a pretty distinct reggae sound,” Asher said.

“This track was written a long time ago, back when I met a girl who changed my world, and six years later turns out to be an amazing wife.”

It’s a song about the challenges we all face on the road to growing old together.”

Their sun-soaked-yet-dark take on roots, reggae and dub has sent ripples through the country, and has even seen the eccentric band travel to New Zealand for the Illuminate festival.

Since its release on 4 August, the track has already become a big hit with reggae fanatics and has reached number five on the Triple J Unearthed roots chart.

Asher said the band was looking forward to the tour, especially visiting Melbourne as although this isn’t their first tour, it is their first time in Melbourne for a majority of the band members.

“I haven’t been to Melbourne and neither have a few of the boys from the band,” he said.

“We’re looking forward to coming down and checking out Sooki Lounge.”

Bearfoot is known for their highly energetic, sweat-drenched live performances, and their ability to create catchy melodies which they guarantee will have audiences dancing.

Burrinja is the best, officially

By Derek Schlennstedt Burrinja Cultural Centre was awarded the Best Small Museum at the 2017 Victorian Museum Awards on Wednesday 26 July.

The Archival Survival Award for Small Museums was awarded to Burrinja for their public programming and community engagement developed for their national exhibition ‘Black Mist Burnt Country’.

The exhibition commemorated the 1950 British atomic tests in Australia, through artworks collected from public and private collections.

It included over 30 Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists who used various different mediums of painting, printmaking, sculpture, photography, new media and music that spanned seven decades.

This marked the third time that Burr-

inja had won the award with the cultural centre winning the same award in 2010 and 2014.

Burrinja Executive Director, Ross Farnell said the award came as a surprise and was a credit to the hard work undertaken by staff and volunteers.

“This is a remarkable achievement for such a small organisation that does so much, and one of which everyone at Burrinja and in the region can be rightly proud,” he said.

“These outcomes can only be achieved when an organisation has a clear vision and a fabulous team of people from board to staff and volunteers all working hard to make goals become reality.”

Mr Farnell also passed on special congratulations to JD Mittmann, Burrinja’s curator and maanager of collec-

tions, for driving the project through three years of development and funding rounds.

Upon receiving the award, JD Mittmann said that it was authentication that exhibitions could be both engaging, visually appealing and historically stimulating.

“This award is a wonderful acknowledgement of the intent of this exhibition: where works of art, printed materials and interactive media can be put together to successfully tell a complex story,” Mr Mittman said.

“It is a validation that exhibitions can be both aesthetically pleasing while historically engaging.”

The Black Mist Burnt Country exhibition is currently moving its way across Australia, but is expected to exhibit at Burrinja in 2018.

Atomic Blonde and Valerian Rated MA15+ and M Atomic Blonde, a spy thriller following an undercover MI6 agent in Berlin during the final days of the Cold War, has many great pieces stuck in an underwhelming whole.

The performances are very natural, Charlize Theron is a stolidly compelling lead and the film has some visceral, superbly choreographed action sequences, including a brutal single-take fight scene in a stairwell.

But while Atomic Blonde is saturated with historical accuracy and neon ’80s style, the plot trudges along with a lack of urgency between the riveting action scenes.

The film repeatedly stresses the importance of retrieving ‘the list’, a record of every undercover agent in Berlin, but you can’t help but feel that the Berlin Wall coming down in the background would offer a much more interesting story.

Atomic Blonde is an entertaining film with an insubstantial plot, but Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is total garbage.

Dane DeHaan is a terribly wooden, aggressively masculine and thor-

oughly unpleasant hero, the leads (DeHaan and Cara Delevingne) have no chemistry, the characters are thinly-written and the plot is nonsensical.

There was a method and richlydetailed universe to the zany madness of Jupiter Ascending, but Valerian has barely any cohesion or clear goals from scene to scene. It even ruins what would have been an effective twist through illogical behaviour and the plot showing its cards too early.

Atomic Blonde is worth your time, but avoid Valerian at all costs.

A win can transcend borders USA hosted Papua New Guinea in the Divisional 1 AFL Men’s International Cup at Montrose Recreation Reserve, on Saturday 12 August, and it was nothing short of thrilling.

The PNG Mosquitoes were able to overcome the USA Revolution and have given themselves a new opportunity to make the 2017 International Cup final.

The PNG players showed a superb display of dexterity, athleticism and great football skills which allowed them to control much of the game.

USA Revolution came into the game brimming with confidence after two good wins in the first few rounds over Canada and South Africa. They had also developed a strong relationship with the Montrose Football Club and had trained with Montrose earlier in the week.

Both the Revolution and the Mosquitoes had a number of Australianbased/experienced players playing in match.

The first bounce set the mood for the day with the Americans winning the ruck taps consistently, but PNG able to control the stoppages.

USA started well with Clyde Simpson goaling from 45 metres out and Jason Wilhelm was producing great drive around the ground. But, the Mosquitoes rebounded with Emmaus Wartovo kicking to Amua Mizza Pirika for a mark and goal.

The first quarter saw USA kick two goals, but PNG’s accuracy proved too good with them kicking three goals and zero behinds.

In the second quarter, PNG began to pull away with quick and rapid movement at ground level which proved too much for USA, and PNG used quick chips around the boundary quickly kicked six goals to USA’s four.

The teams went into half time with USA on 26 points and PNG on 37 points.

The third and fourth quarters saw PNG streak away as they became more confident and the Mosquitoes began mixing up short chips around the boundary line with long torpedoes into the centre.

A last minute addition by the USA to the ruck did little to stem the tide and though new ruckman Tim Lindfelt was able to direct the ball away, PNG

The win has thrown open the race for grand final positions which is sure to create some exhilarating games.

Wool meet again ... baaa!

When Warburton resident Lachie Pitman heads north on the Variety Club Bash on Friday, 18 August, he will be in interesting company (apart from two sheep in gumboots)!

Lachie will head out on his 15th Bash with Mike Brady of ‘Up There Cazaly’ fame, former VFL champion footballer David Cloak and Sal Vitiello, project manager for Spotlight Group and team navigator and IT guru.

The 2017 Variety Bash starts in Melbourne on the 18th and finishes 3500 kilometres further on at Fraser Island on 26 August.

The Bash is renowned for its off-track/outback culture, but the first time in the history of Australia’s largest and longest-running charity motoring event, the Yarra Valley’s highways and byways are included in the adventure.

In another first, Mail journalist Derek Schlennstedt will sign on as a guest crew member for the Yarra Valley stage which starts in Toolangi around 10am where team “Sheep Assist Wool Save Ewe” will call in at Toolangi Primary School to make an early grant.

Lachie says the Variety Bash is the only motoring event in Australia that supports kids in need on the road, and this year the focus is on the ‘big give’ with teams stopping along with grants to schools and other organisations from their team fund-raising.

Team SAWSE will pass through Healesville, Yarra Junction, Wesburn, Millgrove and Warburton on their way to their next stop (eta 11am to 11.30am) at Millwarra Primary School, East Warburton, where they will make a second grant.

They will continue on (minus Derek) through Noojee and Neerim South on their way to their first overnight stop at Traralgon.

Cars must be over 30 years old to take part in the event and can be ‘themed’ to add to the interest, enjoyment and amusement of townspeople along the way.

The 1979 LTD is remarkable for the two sheep in gumboots adorning the roof, and the team who have adopted a sheepish persona to match.

Lachie was recruited to the Bash 15 years ago when as Brady’s bank manager he was invited to get involved in the iconic fund-raising event.

He says the Bash is not a race, rally or speed trial and the criteria is simple ... relax, have fun, enjoy the journey and raise funds for kids in need.

“You meet some wonderful people under a lot of different circumstances and there’s a great sense of achievement in meeting all these locals and putting a bit of a smile on their faces,” he said.

The Yarra Valley connection won’t be lost as they head north with the LTD sporting the slogan “Warburton where the grass is always green” and Burras football club stickers promoting Lachie’s local club.

Lachie and the team won’t be sheepish about returning a wave or posing for a photo during stops.
