Faith in firepower

By Cam Lucadou-Wells The works of ‘Machine Gun Preacher’ Sam Childers have been unorthodox and violent. But his rescuing of countless children is a source of inspiration for local church leaders.

The US-born Childers, who leads the Angels of East Africa aid organisation, is spreading his message in churches and schools in Hallam, Cranbourne and Cranbourne East in August.

His life is undoubtedly chequered, as a former bikie and drug dealer.

He turned his life around in church, building the largest orphanage in South Sudan and leading armed missions to rescue children from a rebel militia.

As he built the orphanage amidst a death zone

of murders and kidnappings, he famously slept under a mosquito net with a Bible in one hand and an AK-47 machine gun in the other.

Despite the perils, Childers’s orphanage blossomed, feeding and housing more than 1000 children.

He has since been the subject of the Hollywood film Machine Gun Preacher, and received the Mother Teresa Memorial International Award for Social Justice.

His latest tour was held up for 20 months due to Childers’ visa being withheld by Australian immigration authorities.

Among his stops will be Catch the Fire church in Hallam.

who “lays down his life to save children”. “It’s interesting that some of the churches had to stand up for and defend themselves with arms, otherwise they’d be killed.

“How many times did God protect him and save so many children?”

Mr Nalliah said he’d encountered persecution of Christians in Saudi Arabia and Indonesia. He at first was affronted by Indonesian Christians not “turning the other cheek” but arming themselves.

“It’s a different environment.

They were not going to stand back and let them rape their wife and daughter and kill them.”

Joel Cayzer, a senior minister at Turning Point church in Cranbourne, said he hoped Childers’ visit would encourage his church to be more missionary-minded.

He said he’d have to think “very deeply” if he was in Childers’ situation in South Sudan and needed to resort to military tactics to protect others.

“I admire the man for going over and helping the best he can.

“He does more than pick up machine-guns.”

Mr Cayzer said he was looking forward to hearing Childers’ heart as he spoke of helping “the broken, the hurt and the poor”.

It would be a preview glimpse for Turning Point’s youth mission to Uganda in December.

Childers will speak at Catch the Fire church on 20 August, Lighthouse Christian School in Cranbourne on 24 August, 7pm and Turning Point church on 25 August, 6.30pm.

Trafficking bail declined

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Narre Warren man accused of drug trafficking days after being released on a community corrections order has been refused bail.

William Quoch, 39, was allegedly intercepted with 18.3 grams of heroin in a car outside a known Dandenong drug-dealing den by police on 6 August, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court was told.

The unemployed man was found with $8870 cash, as well as garden scissors that he admitted was used to cut drugs, police informant Sergeant Kerry Burke told the court on 7 August.

Also in the car was about five grams of prescription tablets and a bottle of suspected GHB, the court heard.

Quoch had allegedly told police he was using

up to 4.8 grams of heroin daily - a habit costing up to $250 a day.

With a 15-page criminal history, he had been placed on an 18-month community corrections order for drug offences at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court just over a fortnight earlier.

He was also on bail at the time for a range of allegations including trafficking methamphetamine.

Quoch was allegedly in breach of bail conditions by associating with a named drug offender, who was at the Dandenong drug den where he was arrested, Sgt Burke said.

Quoch, who represented himself, told the court he went to the address to retrieve his car and didn’t know the offender was there at the time.

Magistrate Jack Vandersteen noted Quoch was on bail for exactly the same type of offences.

The accused had five prior convictions for drug trafficking over the past 19 years and had recently been released from prison for drug offences, Mr Vandersteen said.

“I’m not confident you will comply with any condition of bail.”

As Quoch was led back into police cells, he asked Mr Vandersteen if there was any chance of getting bail with a surety.

“Not a chance,” Mr Vandersteen replied.

Quoch was remanded in custody for a later hearing.

Greater Dandenong students are proving that anything is possible.

They’re taking to the Hisense Arena stage in this year’s Victorian State Schools Spectacular on Saturday 16 September.

They’ll join 3000 young performers from more than 200 schools in Anything is Possible, which explores creativity, freedom of expression and self-empowerment, taking inspiration from the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory tune Pure Imagination.

Carwatha College Year 10 student Allison Hughes scored a role as a dancer in the ensemble.

This will be her third time in the spectacular.

Keysborough resident Oliver Scholast will work behind the scenes in stage management as part of the production crew. It’s the Year 12 student’s first time in the spectacular.

Students start rehearsals up to six months out from the event.

Athol Road Primary School will return to the mass choir for the fourth time while the Chandler Park and Dandenong West primary schools will make their debut.

All the schools involved in the mass choir rehearse individually and come together twice at Melbourne Town Hall in the lead up to the event to consolidate what they have learnt.

They have songs to learn plus choreography.

Lyndale Greens Primary School will return as part of the mass dance for the seventh time and Silverton Primary School is taking part for the fourth time.

There are four rounds of rehearsals throughout the year in metro and regional hubs across Victoria.

There’ll be two three-hour performances on Saturday 16 September at 1pm and 6.30pm.

School bench looks forward to meeting new buddies A bright yellow bench is bringing friendship to the fore at Mossgiel Park Primary School.

The Endeavour Hills school unveiled a Buddy Bench in the senior playground on Monday 7 August.

Grade 5 and 6 students initiated the project as a way to support students who were looking for a buddy for the day, and the Dandenong Lions Club donated it.

“The partnership between the Lions Club and Mossgiel Park has been a wonderful bonus for the school community over the past three years,” principal Jennifer Scott said.

“The members of the club have been very generous in their support for individual students and for special projects such as the colourful Buddy Bench.

“The hard-work and generosity of this community-based club is indeed a valuable investment in the young leaders of today and the future leaders of our community.”

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A conservative Casey councillor rift has been laid bare, with Casey mayor Sam Aziz imploring his councillor Rosalie Crestani to “grow up” after a planning meeting on 8 August.

During debate on a proposed Berwick Springs roundabout, Cr Crestani appeared to round on mayor Sam Aziz before he successfully struck down her comments on a point-of-order for irrelevance.

Cr Crestani was the only councillor to abstain from the vote, although stating the planning process was commendable and that there was a need for more road infrastructure.

Her dissent was based on “something that needed to be said”.

Cr Crestani said that she had been sent to a councillor code-of-conduct panel for calling “someone a bully” three years ago.

She said she recently apologised to a Berwick Springs resident for behaviour that “put City of Casey at great reputational risk”.

She told Star News that she was referring to Cr Aziz’s “disappointing” comments against opposing residents, despite demeaning protest signs depicting the mayor being planted around Berwick Springs.

“I removed myself out of the vote in protest.

We have to behave and treat our residents better.”

Cr Aziz later said that Cr Crestani had not forgiven him for abstaining from support for her “ridiculous” motion for the council to oppose marriage equality the previous week.

It was dangerous territory for Casey to steer into issues that had nothing to do with local government, he said.

“We can’t be distracted by personal, ideologically-driven agendas.”

He said it was “irresponsible” and “appalling” of Cr Crestani to use a planning matter to serve as “payback”.

Cr Crestani told Star News that she was “gobsmacked” by Cr Aziz’s comparison of her motion to taking issue with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and missions to Mars.

This ignored the voice of 700 Casey residents who signed to a petition calling for no change to the Marriage Act, she said.

“I don’t know if I consider (my abstaining) was payback. We talk about playing as a team and the conservatives that say one thing behind closed doors and then when it comes to the vote they abstain.

“I’m hoping people know it’s not being dropped now. There’s going to be more movement because I can’t ignore it.”

The council chambers have often been the scene of excitable debate.

Casey Hospital will benefit from a statewide funding boost for Victorian hospitals, says Narre Warren South MP Judith Couacaud Graley.

Monash Health, which manages Casey and Dandenong hospitals and Monash Medical Centre, will receive $1.324 billion in 2017-’18 - up more than $79 million.

It is a 20.5 per cent boost on its allocation in the last Liberal budget in 2014, the State Government claims.

Under the statewide boost, hospitals will receive an extra $1.67 billion in the State Budget in the next four years.

Ms Graley said the boost would ensure local residents had access to the highest quality care close to home.

“We know that our hard-working and dedicated doctors and nurses do a remarkable job at Casey Hospital and this record funding boost will ensure they can continue to save lives and keep people healthy.”

Boom gate fail in report spotlight VLocity trains, causing V/Line to immediately remove 27 trains from service.

Then, just a week later on 15 January, a VLocity train on the Pakenham line failed to trigger boom gates at the Progress Street level crossing in Dandenong. As a result, the entire fleet was banned from the metropolitan network, and it wasn’t until June last year that all services resumed on the Gippsland line.

The report found V/Line failed to deal with the challenges it has faced over the past decade, including the Dandenong boom gate incident, and had fallen short of its targets.

It also highlighted issues with its performance measurement system.

The organisation measures and reports train punctuality and reliability against the timetable communicated to passengers in PTV’s journey planner, rather than the master timetable.

V/Line’s chief executive James Pinder took over in November last year and said work was already underway to address many of the network’s issues.

A boom gate failure on the Pakenham train line in January 2016 has been cited as an example of V/ Line’s “concurrent issues” in its passenger services audit.

The Auditor-General’s report, tabled on 9 August, is a service review of the public transport service’s operation over the past 10 years, and includes eight recommendations for V/Line to implement moving forward.

According to the document, V/Line’s performance over the past decade has “mostly fallen short” of its targets and community expectations, despite infrastructure improvements and timetable changes.

It stated that the most impacts on the service’s performance have been ongoing financial pressures, congestion on the shared metro networks, network limitations, a lack of punctuality and excessive wheel wear in VLocity trains and the failure of these trains to activate boom gates on time.

The latter two issues came to the forefront in January last year when higher than normal wear and tear was identified on the wheel flanges of

100 years ago 9 August 1917 Councillors criticised To the editor Sir, The Dandenong shire councillors were very conspicuous by their absence from the very important function held in the town hall on Saturday last.

The function, which was held under the auspices of the State Recruiting Committee was for a threefold purpose.

To get recruits, to mark the third anniversary of the war, and to put before the people the premier’s resolution.

Cr Pearson’s absence was through illness but there was no reason why Crs Abbott, Keys or Burden should not have put in an appearance.

At all events that the Dandenong people were not represented through any part of the proceedings, by at least one of their councillors, does not reflect that national spirit

which should at all times of national stress be the predominant element in public bodies.

50 years ago 15 August 1967 The choice of a lifetime The opportunities available in almost all trades and professions in Australia will be highlighted at the 1967 Dandenong Careers Exhibition to be held in Dandenong Town Hall from 22 to 24 August.

By Victoria Stone-Meadows Casey councillor Geoff Ablett has distanced himself from accusations he was involved in the ‘lobster with a mobster’ dinner with Victorian Liberal Party leader Matthew Guy. Last week media reports said that a recording was made of Liberal Party official Barrie Macmillan speaking with members of the Madafferi family.

The recording allegedly indicates that the Madafferi family was interested in making a donation to Mr Guy’s 2018 state election campaign in small quantities to mask the origin of the donations.

The dinner at The Lobster Cave in Beaumaris was organised by Mr Madafferi’s cousin and Clyde vegetable grower Frank Lamattina.

The dinner was attended by Mr Guy, Mr Madafferi, Cr Ablett and Mr Lamattina.

While Cr Ablett admitted he was at the dinner he said he knew nothing about political donations and was only there in his capacity as a councillor for the City of Casey.

“I was in attendance; I was invited by Frank Lamattina to talk about issues in relation to vegetable growing, transport and problems with the markets,” he said.

“That’s why I was there, as a councillor, I didn’t know who else was going and I wasn’t introduced to anyone else, I wouldn’t know them if I fell over them.”

Police have alleged in the past that Tony Madafferi was a senior figure of Melbourne’s L’Onorata Societa, the Calabrian mafia.

Mr Madafferi has consistently denied wrongdoings and accusations he is a Mafia figure and points out that he has never been charged with any criminal offence and has no criminal convictions.

Frank Lamattina ran for the Balla Balla Ward in the 2016 Casey Council elections and is an executive member of AUSVEG Victoria.

Cr Ablett is a member of the Liberal Party of Victoria and has previously run for the state seat of Cranbourne but said he has nothing to do with the workings of the party.

The Journal reported in May that the Department of Immigration and Border Protection confirmed rumours it would close the Foster Street building with an October deadline.

Isaacs MP Mark Dreyfus and Bruce MP Julian Hill revealed the shortened deadline last week and condemned the Federal Government move.

“The government ran no consultation with the Greater Dandenong community and is now closing this office with no real explanation,” Mr Dreyfus said.

“It really shows that this government’s priorities have never been supporting Greater Dandenong.”

Mr Hill thanked Department of Immigration staff for their service to the Greater Dandenong community.

“Not once in this sorry saga did Minister Peter Dutton listen to the views of his own staff or the community,” he said.

A department spokesperson said it consulted with key stakeholders, including 15 staff and their representatives, before decided not to renew the lease beyond October.

“All affected staff will have the opportunity to remain with the department and will be provided appropriate assistance throughout the transition period,” they said.

The spokesperson said the department already provided a number of its services online, “providing clients with the convenience of accessing information, submitting applications and updating their personal details anywhere, any time and on any device”.

“We are continuing to expand online services, meaning clients do not need to come into an office,” they said.

“Where a client needs to attend an office in-person, they are able to attend our recently refurbished Melbourne CBD office which provides services to clients across the greater Melbourne area.”

By Victoria Stone-Meadows The newest Casey Youth Action Committee (CYAC) has been announced, with 24 young residents taking on the issues that affect the wider community.

Council held a ceremony at the City of Casey Civic Centre on Monday 31 July to welcome the members onto the committee.

The CYAC allows young people in the Casey community a say in what matters to them and helps to direct and inform council policy.

Members will take the lead role in identifying issues of importance and developing relevant strategies for the 12 months they serve on the committee.

City of Casey Mayor Sam Aziz presented the 2017-’18 CYAC members with their badges and congratulated them on their appointment.

“You should each feel incredibly proud tonight,” he said.

“Your leadership, passion and insight are highly valued and council is looking forward to work-

ing with you all.” Cr Aziz said being part of CYAC allowed young people a chance to develop critical skills and gain knowledge that would help them in the future.

“We hope that the CYAC will empower you to take your place in the community,” he said at the ceremony.

“Through the committee, council seeks to develop your social and political awareness and your understanding of the context in which council decisions are made.”

An indoor playground is going for a steal in Mulgrave - it’s free.

Waverley Gardens Shopping Centre’s managers are searching for a new community home for one of its much-loved children’s playgrounds.

It features two slides, a tic-tac-toe panel, a foam climbing ramp, protective netting and a stationary car with an interactive steering wheel.

Centre manager Belinda Donnelly and marketing manager Jodie-Lee Murphy hope a charity or community group will take it off their hands.

“It’s in good working use so we’d just rather see somebody from our community get enjoyment out of it,” Ms Donnelly said.

It was installed in the food court four years ago and was a hit among children aged four and under.

“Commercial playground and play equipment itself is really very expensive, which is why a lot of groups or charities don’t have playgrounds,” Ms Murphy said.

The playground was removed last year to make way for a custom-built kids’ play space.

Children’s art from a hard place

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Casey author Wida Tausif ’s inspiring works were born from a difficult place.

Ms Tausif, 25, is about to release her second children’s book, Aliens Don’t Belong On Earth - a chapter book on two boys’ special mission from aliens to move humans to Chocolate World.

The story touches on trust, loyalty, honesty and friendship, the Narre Warren South resident says.

Those values seem galaxies away from the cruel schoolyard taunts she endured as a nine-yearold in New Zealand.

The Afghan-born student was told she was a terrorist, Al Queda ringleader Osama Bin Laden and that she didn’t belong “here”.

After school, she was chased and tomatoes and eggs were thrown at her. She was threatened if she reported her torments to teachers.

“I didn’t have any friends for a few months, except an Afghan friend who was going through the same thing.

“I was weak and couldn’t do anything about it.”

Ms Tausif is also concerned about children enduring corporal punishment in overseas countries such as Pakistan.

“As a child you don’t want to go through these experiences. You want to grow up in a happy and safe environment.”

As she grew up, she also wanted to become a role-model and inspiration.

Her works are affirming - a suite of poems and articles on peace and human rights. She has taken to studying the history of Islam and speaking out for women’s rights and against extremist Islamic groups.

Those who read the Koran should also study the contextual history behind the scriptures, she says.

Her third book, yet to be published, is about the lives of herself and other Muslim women. It tackles women’s rights, Islam, how culture and religion is mixed and confused in the Middle East but its audience is everyone.

There’s a common view that Muslim women are required to “cover up” with a head scarf. How-

Casey enjoys youth crime drop

By Victoria Stone-Meadows Youth crime is down in the City of Casey, along with the rest of the state, latest figures from the Crime Statistics Agency (CSA) show.

There were 231 first-time offenders between the ages of 10 and 17 in the City of Casey during the 2016 calendar year, compared to 343 in the 2012 calendar year.

The statistics show that year on year there are has been a decrease in the number of young firsttime offenders in the City of Casey.

There were 21 fewer young offenders in 2013

compared to 2012, 82 fewer in 2014 compared to 2013 and one fewer in 2015 compared to 2014.

The trend in Casey follows a wider trend in Victoria that has seen a 10 percent decrease in youth crime in the last decade.

The research found that 56 per cent of young offenders committed at least one offence with another person in 2016, down from 63 per cent in 2007.

Crime Statistics Agency Chief Statistician Fiona Dowsley said young people were more likely to commit a crime when in the presence of someone else as opposed to acting alone.

‘More than half (56 per cent) of all young of-

fenders committed at least one crime in the company of others, compared to 30 per cent of offenders aged 18 to 24,” she said.

"Our research shows that the crime type most likely to be committed in company is robbery.

"Young people were less likely to commit serious assaults and motor vehicle thefts in company, and co-offending for these crimes have both decreased compared to 2007.”

Specific types of crimes committed by young people have also shown downward trends.

The CSA statistics show that the number of first-time young offenders committing crimes against the person remained stable over time but

property and deception offences decreased by an average of nearly nine per cent per year.

Ms Dowsley said the decrease in property offices is driven by less shoplifting among young people.

“The decrease in recorded property offences committed by young people was driven by a drop in retail theft offences,” she said.

“We’ve also seen a reduction in the number of young people committing serious assaults in the last five years, and this reflects the broader trends highlighted in our quarterly crime statistics.”

Casey Stadium opens up after $18 million in first stage renovations

By Victoria Stone-Meadows The first stage of the revamped Casey Stadium was officially opened by City of Casey Mayor Sam Aziz on Sunday 6 August.

The renovations to the formerly named Casey Indoor Leisure Centre have cost the City of Casey just under $18 million.

by Terry Vickerman, State Member for Narre Warren South Judith Graley MP and Anthony Neal from YMCA Victoria to officially open stage one of the redevelopment.

The facility has had five new basketball and netball courts built, including a centre court for up to 1500 spectators, a cafe, piazza, and function space.

However, the new stadium hasn’t been entirely without controversy.

In June this year, Star News revealed that some sports such as beach volleyball and indoor soccer would not be offered at the new stadium.

Former sports co-ordinator at the centre Adrian Vella, who ran the indoor AFL, soccer and beach volleyball for eight years, said it was made clear to him there was no room for these sports at the new centre.

“They have re-purposed the use of all the areas we used in the centre,” he said.

“When I rang they said the problem was they

would have to re-do the lease and they didn’t want to do that, even short-term.”

However, group manager of active communities at Casey Council James Rouse said the second part of the development would allow for different sports to be based there.

“Part two is the indoor sports component, which is about to undergo a redevelopment,” he said.

“That will see it re-purposed as a regional gymnastics, indoor cricket (capable of hosting state and national tournaments) and multi-sport venue with capacity for volleyball, badminton, wheelchair sports and more.”

The newly renovated stadium forms part of the City of Casey’s sporting precinct along with Casey RACE and Casey Fields just down the road.

Council will start stage two of the redevelopment at Casey Stadium straight away.

“One of the key objectives of our new 2017’21 Council Plan is to be the destination for arts, culture, sport and leisure that attracts visitors and brings communities together, and our continued investment in Casey Stadium is a shining example of how we’re working to achieve that,” Cr Aziz said.

The $4.73 million stage two of the project will be mainly funded by council with a $781,000 contribution from YMCA and a $650,000 contribution from the Victorian Government.

Dandenong High School.

School upgrade A $3 million upgrade will soon start at Dandenong High School.

Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams announced that HLC Constructions was awarded the construction contract and work was now due to get underway.

The project will complete stage four works at the school, including refurbishing the library and senior study spaces. “The Dandenong community will finally have the modern facilities they deserve to better meet the needs of students and teachers,” Ms Williams said.

Today it employs hundreds of people and is growing rapidly, and son Todd is at the helm.

The company earned an induction into the Victorian Manufacturing Hall of Fame in 2008.

In 2014 Mr Hartley joined the Victorian Manufacturing Hall of Fame Honour Roll, a nod reserved for individuals or organisations that have made an outstanding contribution to manufacturing excellence in Victoria.

Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce inducted Mr Hartley into its Hall of Fame in 2015.

Mr Hartley is survived by wife Margo, sons Mark and Todd, daughter-in-law Michelle and granddaughters Leni and Zara.

Manufacturing, Scouting and the wider Greater Dandenong community have lost a leading figure in Tom Hartley.

The Endeavour Hills resident died on Tuesday 8 August at age 80 following a long health battle.

He received a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in June.

“A truly inspirational man with a lifetime commitment to family, Scouting, church and business,” a tribute from his family read.

“He has left an amazing legacy.”

A tribute from Scouts Victoria described Mr Hartley, its vice president, as “a great Victorian who inspired all with his generous contribution to helping build a better world”.

“From local Scout Leader to Chairman of Scouts Victoria, Vice-President and life member, Tom gave 60 years’ service to Scouting,” it read.

“We were honoured to share him with his family, business and church, and we’ll miss him greatly.”

Mr Hartley was “absolutely thrilled” to receive the OAM nod, he told the Journal, and described the moment that started it all.

He grew up in Leeds, England, and had a runin with a vicar over some mischief-making.

The ultimatum - join the choir or the vicar would take him home to his mum.

“Being a coward, I joined the choir,” Mr Hartley said.

Through the singing group he met children that he’d seen tending a fire in a park.

They told him they were Scouts and he was welcome to join.

“I suppose it changed my life,” he said.

“It taught me leadership and teamship, to be resilient, to care for other people and the will to succeed.

“That put me in good stead to run a business.”

Mr Hartley arrived in Australia in 1956 as a third-year apprentice toolmaker.

He met wife Margo through the youth group at St James Anglican Church in Dandenong.

Walking into a display home can be daunting.

There is a very small percentage of builders out there (and by small, I can only think of one!) that actually include everything in a home. And by everything, I mean inside the home and outside the home!

If you are hunting for a price point because you need to meet a specific budget, it is important to know what is going to cost you big money.

For example, a driveway can cost upwards of $4000 for a simple plain concrete driveway. A fence can be the most expensive per lineal meter item!

Right now bank finance is “cheap” interest rates are low which means, based on historical standards, repayments are quite low.

While changes have occurred they are good ones - forcing people to pay off the principal of their loan while also managing interest is a positive thing.

So, keeping this in mind, it is much easier and more affordable to include the items which will be very expensive for you later.

Be mindful, however, that builders who choose to sell you a shell will charge you significantly more to add in these items later. This is where they make most of their money.

So, when you get seduced by a low ball base price for a 20+ square design,

keep in mind that the slab grade they have included in their advertised price is going to need to be upgraded on your site.

If you thought you were getting stone bench tops, think again. And if you want them you will know you are paying for them.

So, where can we avoid all this inclusion heartbreak?

Let’s go back to the start - in the display.

When you sit down with whichever builder after walking through their house, you need to ask a very important question - what is the ‘as displayed’ price?

When they give you the price, ask them if a driveway, a fence, the façade and the slab are included in that base price.

Ask the builder if they put noggins behind their toilet and towel rail holders.

Ask them how many coats of paint are included internally.

If you expect to pay peanuts for a house, chances are you’ll get one fit for a monkey.

Ask the right questions at the start and you’ll get all the information you need to make a smart decision later.

The Dandenong South business was among three nominees for this year’s Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce Business Awards which were announced at a breakfast at Sandhurst Club on Wednesday 9 August.

Buildsafe and Skillinvest also entered the running for the awards, to be presented in November.

The Rato and Sousa families started Jurgen’s in a small bakery in Cheltenham in 1995.

It now employs close to 100 people and its clients include Goodman Fielder, Nando’s, Etihad Stadium and the ALH Group.

Business development manager Kon Bangtragoulas said Jurgen’s recently added an organic burger bun to its product offering and received the “best milk bun” title from Goodman Fielder following a sample of 50 bakeries.

“A lot of factors contribute to good bread,” he said, providing climate as an example.

“Our facility allows us to control that.

“Our bread passes the squeeze test, it pops back.”

Back in 2001, the Buildsafe team was calling 10 builders a day, staying up all night building equipment, and delivering it to sites the following day.

Its founders wanted to bring professionalism to the scaffolding industry, and to increase both safety and productivity.

The Keysborough-headquartered company also has a focus on mental health after losing a worker a few years ago.

“We’ve designed most of our products if not all of them,” he said.

“One of the key factors has been the ability of our staff to put it up safely.”

He said builders from across Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland came to the company for solutions.

Skillinvest is a non-profit group training organisation (GTO) and registered training organising (RTO) and has its head office in Thomas Street, Dandenong.

It also has a training facility on Cheltenham Road, Dandenong, and a hairdressing salon on Thomas Street.

It employs more than 110 people, trains more than 1300 people across Victoria annually, and recruits more than 450 apprentices and trainees for businesses.

Skillinvest also provides ongoing pastoral care and support to the trainees.

Operations manager Paul Konig said the company had rebranded from Link Employment and Trading.

He said there’d been a downturn in the uptake of apprenticeships and traineeships over past five years of about 30 per cent.

“We’ve had to look outside the box and diversify to keep going,” he said.

Skillinvest works particularly with culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) workers and mature-aged workers from the car industry.

It’s also placing Aboriginal students in police stations to complete a certificate three in business administration, and delivering a young parents education program with the South East Local Learning and Employment Network (SELLEN).

Breakfast muesli’s growth plan is food for thought

The Carman’s founder was the guest speaker at the Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce Business Awards breakfast at Sandhurst Club on Wednesday 9 August.

The 43-year-old sits on the Human Rights Law Centre board, is an ambassador for the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre and The Australian Childhood Foundation, and is a St Kilda Gatehouse patron.

She was a judge on Channel 10 television show Recipe to Riches and has four children aged 13 and under with husband Peter.

Six months later the owners decided to sell. Ms Creswell and her co-worker Manya van Aken decided to chip in $1000 each to buy it.

The owners hoped to sell for $10,000 but after three months of scaring off potential buyers by exaggerating the hard work involved, Ms Creswell and Ms van Aken got their wish.

They took the first three letters of each of their

names and Carmen’s was born.

Ms Creswell bought the business outright two years later, able to devote more time and take more risk than her partner.

Desperate to get into supermarkets, she secured a six-month trial in 20 stores.

“This was the break,” she said.

She’d deliver the muesli in her Daewoo hatchback, leave samples in staff break rooms and set up displays.

Ms Creswell bought her own products off the shelves to boost sales and used friends and family to promote the brand at trade shows.

She sent samples to everyone in the phone book with the surname Carman and got her products onto airlines to build brand recognition.

“Now someone in the world buys a Carman’s product every two seconds,” she said.

The product range has expanded from muesli to nut bars, crackers and more and is sold in 32 countries. China is the next frontier.

Jason Edtmaier is determined to succeed in life and in business.

The 20-year-old from Rowville is well on his way, named a Youth Enterprise Award nominee at the Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce Business Awards breakfast at Sandhurst Club on Wednesday 9 August.

Chisholm Institute’s Mike Barrett nominated the electrical apprentice, selecting him from 33,000 students across the TAFE and about 300 eligible electrical apprentices.

“In the time I spent researching all of these guys I could see that Jason was a standout,” he said.

“What impressed me was at such a young age, he’s got a plan. We don’t see that in a lot of our students these days.”

“I can see he’s committed to his school work,” he said.

“He’s somewhat gifted and he uses that gift to work hard in his studies. He also uses his time to help his mates along. I think that’s particularly honourable these days when people try to climb over one another. He’s helped a few guys who otherwise might not have made it to get over the line.”

Jason said he’d always wanted to do a trade.

“It’s always been in the family,” he said.

In high school at Hallam Senior College he completed a certificate two in building and construction.

He sat down with a teacher at the end of Year 12 and went through the pros and cons of each trade.

They decided electrical was the right path for him.

He started at Chisholm last year and has an apprenticeship with L and O Technologies in Dandenong South.

“I love showing up for work each day,” he said.

“There’s always new things to learn and new challenges.

“I’m really excited for what the trade has to offer.”

Jason said he used to play a high level of footy but “gave the flick to knuckle down with my studies”.

He’s finished a certificate in telecommunications at night school and over the next 12 months wants to get his certificate three out of the way and get his electrical licence.

Jason wants to continue with L and O and take on more responsibility, and to eventually complete a building diploma and go out on his own.

“It would also be good to take on others and really bring them along with me,” he said.

“I get a lot of satisfaction out of helping others.

“To me, knowledge is power. I enjoy learning new things and taking it back to work and teaching others.”

SPORT Rays star rates his team mates

By Nick Creely Winning premierships with his mates is what Dandenong Stingray and Haileybury College star Mitchell Riordan values the most.

It’s not the individual accolades he is after either - he is team orientated and plays for the genuine love of the game.

The 17-year-old is expected to become a crucial cog in the Stingrays’ finals assault over the next month as he eyes his second flag of the season.

His first premiership of 2017 - an extraordinary undefeated season with private school powerhouse Haileybury - was monumental, and something that will inspire him desperately to taste that success again.

“When it comes to school football it’s just a bit closer and in tight with all of your mates you go to school with,” he said when reflecting on the school season.

“It was pleasing and one of the big moments of my life so far, and especially just to get the premiership undefeated with all my mates was really special.”

With his fellow Stingray teammates Luke Davies-Uniacke, Oscar Clavarino and Aiden Bonar in the side, as well as many prospective AFL draftees, Haileybury completed a rare feat - going through the season undefeated in an almost unprecedented APS feat.

Riordan still has to pinch himself to think he has been running alongside some of the most promising names in the country.

“It’s pretty special to think you’re mates with some of these guys - it’s pretty cool,” he said.

“Just to hang out with them and have a laugh at training and throughout the week is awesome and

And with a band of elite coaches, none more prominent than Essendon legend Matthew Lloyd,

Haileybury produced one of the finest school sides of memory.

“All of the coaches at Haileybury and the Stingrays for that matter are all great, and if

you ask for feedback they’ll just give it to you straight,” Riordan explained.

“Lloydy (Matthew Lloyd) especially is just so helpful, I went to him for some goal kicking help and he was really open with me but all of the coaches are just down to earth and great blokes.”

The former under-16 Vic Country representative midfielder, who will be eyeing off a place in next year’s Under-18 National Championships, has changed up his role slightly both with the ‘Rays and Haileybury as he evolves his game.

“This year I’ve moved up forward in school more just to get that aspect of my game improving, and even in the Stingrays in the early parts of the year I was also moved forward a bit - I just want to build up all aspects of my game,” he said.

“I just want to keep working harder in the midfield too, but I’m happy to play wherever and try my best for the team.”

In his six TAC Cup games this season in what has been another step in his development, Riordan has shown he has what it takes, and was terrific recently in a win over Northern Knights.

“With the TAC Cup footy it takes a while to get used to, but after a couple of games you get used to the pace and you start to gain some confidence to take the game on and especially last year getting a game really has helped me into the latter part of this year and next year too,” he said.

As for his finals bounds ‘Rays, Riordan is confident the group has learnt from last year and won’t make the same mistakes.

“At the start of the season we believed our depth would be the strong point going all the way through and especially last year we did well and finished on top but we quickly realized it’s not what happens during the season but what happens during the finals that matters the most,” he said.

Success threat fulfilled Seona Thompson made a clean sweep of the Victoria leg of the National Championships after Aston Dee Bee and Bewlidering brilliantly quinellaed the state final at Sandown Park last Thursday night.

Beginning well from box two, Aston Dee Bee railed powerfully beneath early leader and kennel mate Extreme Magic to lead out of the straight the first time.

He held off the well supported favourite Black Mumbo down the back straight, then survived a late challenge from Bewlidering to score by 1.75 lengths in 29.172 - the second fastest time recorded in 2017.

It was Aston Dee Bee’s third consecutive win and a welcome return to his brilliant best.

“He’s been threatening to do this for a while,” said handler Jason Thompson.

“He hadn’t been here for a while before last week. He got another good draw tonight and he made full use of the inside draw by pushing up beneath Extreme Magic, it was good to see him do everything right and still be strong at the end.

“He didn’t ping the lids but he mustered hard and pushed through like a good dog. He probably hasn’t shown that tenacity for a long while but he has been threatening to do it. He went really well.”

Aston Dee Bee will be joined in the National Sprint final by Bewildering, who reached the final as the AGRA wildcard by virtue of being the highest ranked greyhound to make its state final without winning it.

The run by Bewildering was simply brilliant.

A clear last after box rise, the Bill Collins Speed Star winner threaded a path through the field at the first turn to emerge in third place entering the back straight. With clear galloping room he unleashed his customary powerful finish to run second. His time in running second would have won any other race on the night by two lengths.

“The winner has run home in 10.52 and I reckon he was probably six or seven off him and he’s been beaten a length and three quarters,” Thompson continued.

Dolphins dive in for the season

Aston Dee Bee and Bewildering charged into the National Sprint Championship grand final.

“He’s hit the line hard but that’s what he does.

Box 5 was a little bit tricky for him but he went really well.”

The Thompsons have won just about every major race on the greyhound racing calendar but, remarkably, have never had a finalist in the National Championships.

Not only will they have two finalists in the Sprint final at Albion Park but they will also have

a runner in the National Distance Championship final with Burn One Down also set to fly the Victorian flag.

“It’s good, any of these sorts of races it’s just great to be in them and be involved and to make the final is a great achievement by the dogs.”

The National Championship grand finals will be run at Albion Park, Brisbane, on Friday 25 August.

Frankston Football Club will return to the Peter Jackson VFL in season 2018 after having its licence application granted by AFL Victoria.

The club presented a strong case for a return to the competition to AFL Victoria Board and Executive representatives on 24 July, with a focus not only on re-establishing the Dolphins’ important role in the talent pathway in the south-east region, but also a long-term management and financial strategy for the club.

AFL Victoria CEO Steven Reaper said Frankston FC has an important role to play in the region, with time away from the competition enabling the club to prioritise and focus on its off-field structures.

“AFL Victoria was always committed to continuing to work with key stakeholders in the region - including Frankston FC - to ensure there would be a state-league presence there into the future,” Reaper said.

The Dandenong Stingrays - who have been involved in a long and fruitful partnership with Frankston - are set to be the main TAC Cup club to benefit from the reinstatement of the Dolphins’ VFL licence.

Stingrays coach Craig Black said he was thrilled to have Frankston back in the VFL competition.

“One thing it does do is give our TAC Cup kids an option. A lot of our boys go to Casey and now there’s another opportunity for the kids who live down south,” he said.

“It’s exciting for our area and for our young men to get an opportunity if they don’t great drafted to go back and ply their trade for a couple of years.”

By Nick Creely SEABL REVIEW - SEMI-FINALS In a stunning result at Dandenong Stadium on Saturday night, the Rangers’ Men’s team is through to the preliminary final after a pulsating 92-91 victory over the North-West Thunder.

It was an electric game, with a capacity crowd being treated to some high quality basketball, and until the last moments no one knew who would walk away victorious.

With only moments to go in the match, Jorden Pege’s stepback fadeaway sealed the deal and saw the home side move one step further to the championship.

But in a tightly-fought contest, not much ever separated the two rivals.

At quarter time, the scores were level at 26-apiece, at half time the Thunder surged a point clear, and at three quarter time the Thunder were two points ahead.

Off the back of star big man Chris Bryan (seven goals), who completely dominated proceedings, the Burra kicked 10 goals in the second quarter to set up the win before slowing down in the final quarter, although they already sealed up the four points by half time.

There were others who also played strong games for the Burras, with Jay Pitto impressive and Bryce Sutton continuing his consistent season.

Meanwhile, Springvale Districts fell agonisingly short of a stunning upset over Caulfield, 10.16(76) to 11.9(75).

DIVISION 3 - ROUND 17 Hallam celebrated its 50-year anniversary in grand style, knocking off fellow premiership aspirant Doveton Eagles by nine-points, 16.7(103) to 15.4(94).

In a high quality contest - and potential grand final preview - it didn’t all go to plan for the Hawks, with the Eagles surging out to a 25-point quarter time lead.

With former AFL-forward Russell Robertson (eight goals) in fine form, the Eagles then led narrowly at both half and three quarter times as they looked to spoil the Hawks’ party.

But the top-of-the-ladder Hawks rose like quality sides do, booting 4.5 to 2.1 in the last to steal the four points and further cement their standing as the premiership favorites.

Manny Peresso was stellar in a stirring victory for the Hawks, while Todd Byers and Robertson both played huge roles for the Eagles.
