By Mandy Oakham A Drysdale man says he drove to hospital doubled over in agony after hearing he faced a “minimum“ four-hour wait for an ambulance.

Ross Brown’s ordeal prompted Ambulance Victoria to launch a review of the incident, the service confirmed to the Indy.

Mr Brown said a nurse on call told him he must go to hospital immediately after he found himself in agonising pain and unable to pass urine on 16 July.

But he was advised the wait for an ambulance would take at least four hours, Mr Brown said.

“I just don’t understand why it would take so long. After all, we’re only about 30 minutes from the city we’re not out in an isolated country area.

“I just couldn’t believe it when the guy said a minimum of four hours. I told him I had no way of getting in there unless I drove myself.“ Mr Brown decided on driving to hospital to avoid the wait but had to stop several times along the way for fear of passing out at the wheel, he said.

“It was hell,“ he told the Indy.

“I had to keep pulling over because I thought I was going to lose consciousness.

“My wife doesn’t drive and we’re new to the area, so there was no one around at that time of night who I could get to drive me in.”

Delay council election to keep admins, says lobby

By Luke Voogt A private lobby has made a last-ditch attempt to delay council elections an extra year just two months before the scheduled poll in October.

Committee for Geelong chief Rebecca Carson last night joined a “large delegation” of members requesting that the State Government extend Geelong’s administrators’ tenure until 2018.

“It’s probably time to have one last look at it,” she said.

The delegation comes after several council hopefuls, including five sacked councillors, publically declared their intent to run in October’s election.

City Hall also began holding Councillor Candidate Information Sessions this week.

But Ms Casson said the administrators required “important time” to implement changes to City Hall, which an Independent Commission of Inquiry described as “dysfunctional”.

The Andrews Government appointed the three administrators after sacking Geelong’s council in April 2016.

tion until 2020.

“The Committee for Geelong has never wavered from that,” Ms Casson said.

But the Coalition and the Greens teamed up to force the government to amend the date.

Ms Casson said the parties should take “responsibility if Geelong regresses again” if the election takes place as planned.

But Western Victoria MP Simon Ramsay labelled the comments “ludicrous”.

“It was the current government introduced the structure the government would be working un-

der,” the coalition MP said.

The Andrews Government scrapped the popularly elected mayor and returned the vote to council following the controversial recommendation of the state-commissioned Geelong Citizens’ Jury.

Mr Ramsay said the coalition would meet with the committee but Geelong was “ready for an election in October.”

Fellow coalition MP Andrew Katos said the opposition would not to waver on its position.

“We believe that democracy should be restored as soon as possible.”

The delegation came as Geelong’s administrators reported to Victorian Parliament on their progress to date.

Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins foreshadowed the election would go forward on 28 October 2017 as planned despite the committee delegation.

“The Andrews Labor Government is committed to fulfilling its promise to Geelong ratepayers and ensuring they get the council they deserve,” she said.

“The Geelong council legislation states that an election will proceed in October this year.”

In Brief Caravan disappears Thieves have cut through a wire front fence, a tow-ball lock and a security cable to steal a $35,000 caravan from Ocean Grove, according to police.

Sacking ‘political’ Another former councillor has described last year’s sacking of Geelong’s council as “politically motivated”.

Peter Murrihy, standing for re-lection in October, echoed former council colleagues including ex-mayor Darryn Lyons when told radio 94.7 The Pulse that politics influenced the Andrews Government’s decision to dismiss the 13 councillors.

‘Assault’ image Police have released an image of a man wanted for questioning over an “unlawful assault” at a taxi rank in Geelong.

Poultry reprieve Poultry sales could continue at Geelong Saleyards until early next year despite council administrators booting sheep and cattle from the crumbling facility ahead of a proposed site redevelopment.

City Hall confirmed this week that an auction licence for the saleyards’ Monday poultry sales expired in February, up to six months after this month’s deadline for sheep and cattle.

Learner boost A new sponsorship will expand opportunities for learner drivers without access to vehicles or licensed drivers due to “family or financial circumstances” to achieve their Ps, according the program’s operators.

L2P said the Gforce sponsorship would allow the program to operate at “full capacity” for 16 to 21-year-olds next year, with the organisation calling for participants from Golden Plans and Surf Coast shires.

Mr Brown decided to speak out after last week hearing “politicians in the media talking about how ambulance waiting times were down”.

Mr Brown said he complained about his treatment in an email to Bellarine MP Lisa Neville’s office but telephoned her office “at least” a week later after hearing nothing back.

on his letter to Health Minister Jill Hennessy, he said.

Ms Neville’s office confirmed receiving the complaint and forwarding it to Ms Hennessy for further investigation.

Ambulance Victoria confirmed to the Indy that it would review Mr Brown’s case.

Mr Brown said an official from the service contacted him this week.

“He must have apologised 10 times.”

Ambulance Barwon South West acting regional manager Anthony De Wit confirmed the service had been in contact with Mr Brown.

“We understand the distress and the concern of the patient and we’ve been in touch with him to

discuss this matter,” Mr De Wit said.

“Ambulance Victoria can confirm that on July 16 we received a triple zero call for a man with lower abdominal pain.

All triple zero calls for ambulance are individually assessed and our priority is to ensure emergency ambulances are available to respond rapidly to patients who require life-threatening and emergency treatment.

“Based on information provided by the patient, his condition was not assessed as requiring an emergency ambulance. As such the call was transferred to an experienced paramedic in our referral service for further assessment.”

But in typical fashion the 63-year-old used it as just another chance to spruik the sport and club she loves.

“It’s been terrific to be involved over the years,” Claire told Double Take.

“Newtown City Hockey club is happy to have new players and new members any time of year and at any age.”

The club celebrated its 40th anniversary this year, with Claire a member almost since the beginning.

“Apart from a couple of seasons when I was having my daughters I’ve only missed three or four games.”

The club president expects to play on for at least five years.

“Goalkeeper probably makes it easier, as you don’t have to run around as much,” she laughed.

Local dynamo in rare-cancer plea

Meanwhile, City Hall’s “green spine” plan for central Geelong has alarmed at least one eagle-eyed motorist, who identified potential traffic chaos in a concept image published in the 20 July Indy.

The image depicted greenery separating the nowlinked thoroughfares of Mercer and Gheringhap Sts, which would force traffic onto alternative routes through the increasingly busy city.

City Hall was eager to allay any fears of gridlock when Double Take enquired this week.

The picturesque concept plan was naught but an artist’s impression, City Hall said, with the public sure to be consulted on the final shape of the green spine.

Hopefully the consultation differs from the model used for the libraries closure fiasco earlier this year.

Namely, that the public has its say before the decision, not the other way around.

Could be an issue to remain under the Indy’s own eagle eye!

Geelong world champion and paralympian Kelly Cartwright has led a mission to Canberra to give a voice to the voiceless.

Cartwright was in the Australian capital this week as the newly appointed ambassador for Rare Cancers Australia (RCA).

Her role was to meet politicians and advocate for change in the treatment of rare cancers.

She attended RCA’s annual conference at Parliament House to help launch Rare Solutions: A Time To Act, the RCA’s special report with the aim of improving the outlook for 52,000 Australians diagnosed with a rare or uncommon cancer each year.

The report was a first-of-its-kind, paving the way for government, industry and the research community to unite on improving the treatment of rare cancer patients.

RCA estimated that 25,000 people died annually from rare cancers, with survival rates improving only marginally over the past 20 years. Survival rates for more common cancers had improved dramatically during the same period, RCA said.

Cartwright knows first-hand the impact of rare cancers after her diagnosis at the age of 15 with an uncommon but aggressive form of cancer in her right knee.

The disease forced the amputatation of her right leg to give Cartwright the best chance of survival.

Her brilliant career as an athlete has since included silver and gold medals in the 2012 London Paralympics along with records at several world championships.

“People think you get cancer and then you get treatment, but that is not always the case,” Cartwright said, “so I want to raise awareness that not all cancers are equal in that sense.

“I’m one of the lucky ones, but I want to speak out for all those other people who are out there, the forgotten ones.”

Top cop’s DNA discovery

By Mandy Oakham Five-hundred Geelong homes will trial new technology to fight crime, according to police.

Police were door-knocking homes in areas with high crime rates to participate in the trial from 1 September, Superintendent Craig Gillard said.

The trial would supply a free kit with a clear “DNA” liquid to apply on as many as 50 valuable items, he said.

Items marked with the liquid would be registered with police for identification if recovered after a theft.

Supt Gillard said the liquid, manufactured in the Netherlands, contained a unique, synthetic DNA code.

Police would use a UV lamp to identify the presence of the liquid, he said, with the DNA code identifying the registered owner.

Police hoped the technology would help deter thefts, Supt Gillard said.

His superiors, including Police Minister Lisa Neville, announced the trial to the media last month after he discovered the technology while travelling to the UK and the USA on a Churchill Fellowship two years ago.

“As I talked to my colleagues in these countries I learnt how widespread this technology was, and then having read the evaluation reports I knew that this technology was having a real impact on lowering crime rates and I thought we really need to try this out in Australia,” Supt Gillard said.

“I’m always ready to try new things because, when it comes to crime prevention, if you keep on doing the same things you keep having the same results.

“This pilot represents 18 months of hard work getting it up but if we get the results I am expecting, then this will be a very exciting development in reducing crime rates locally.

“There are going to be a lot of eyes on the results of this pilot so we are all going to be working very hard to make it a success.”

Business awards challenge judges A flood of entries has fired “robust discussion” on the judging panel for this year’s Powercor Geelong Business Excellence Awards, according to the panel’s boss.

The 2017 awards were among the “toughest” of Simon Flowers’ nine years on the panel, he said.

Geelong’s business community will gather at The Pier for next Thursday’s presentation night after the judges sorted through a record haul of nominations for an expanded field of 21 categories.

The 2017 categories include new individual prizes for Business Leader and Young Entrepreneur of the year, with both shortlisted for Australian Leadership Excellence Awards’ Victorian finals.

Mr Flowers welcomed the “unprecedented” interest in this year’s Geelong business Simon Flowers awards.

“The selection of the category winners is usually a difficult exercise for the judges each year because the standard of entries is constantly raised,” Mr Flowers said.

“This year we experienced roughly a 20 per cent increase in the number of entries and the quality of businesses that entered led to lengthy and robust discussion at the judges’ table to select the category winners.

“Together with the business entries, we also received some exceptional entries in the two new individual awards.”

The 32-year-old awards were the oldest of their kind continually running in Australia, said Geelong Chamber of Commerce chief Bernadette Uzelac.

“Each year the Awards provide a vehicle to showcase and recognise entrepreneurialism, innovation and the depth of business excellence within the greater Geelong region,” she said.

Ms Grzybek who unsuccessfully stood for election to council in 2012, also wanted more sports facilities and “better-utilised public open space” across the ward.

Mr Aitken said he would “strongly advocate” for Windemere, using his experience as a councillor with the former Shire of Corio and for the first City of Greater Geelong council after municipal amalgamations in 1996.

“The north has a lot of good things in it and good people who call it home,” he said.

“However, it needs strong voices that can highlight the significant disadvantage being experienced by many in the northern suburbs and the pressures that population growth has brought to Lara.”

Now working at Lara, Mr Aitken described himself as “born and raised in Corio”.

“I know the north, and we deserve a fair share from the Geelong council.

“Council is not just the CBD.” Mr Aitken echoed one of Ms Grzybek’s campaign priorities, saying the next council must work in a “professional manner”.

He wanted council leadership that worked collaboratively with state and federal governments “to ensure all who live in Geelong experience a better Geelong”.

Voters will elect 11 councillors across four wards after State Government restructured Geelong’s council. Windermere, covering Lara and parts of northern Geelong, will be the only ward with two councillors, the others having three each.

The first alliance of ward candidates has emerged for October’s council elections, with three contenders for Windemere confirming their mutual support.

Lara mother Kylie Grzybek and former Geelong councillor Anthony Aitken announced their candidacy this week after ex-Bisinella Developments spokesman David Withington revealed his in last Friday’s Indy.

The three confirmed they would campaign in co-operation, with Mr Withington describing the arrangement as “in support” of each other rather than a ticket.

“Let’s just say that if two of us were elected, we’d be able to work very well together for the ward,” he said.

The trio will take on former multiple-term councillor Tony Ansett, the only other contender so far for the northern ward’s two seats on council.

Mr Ansett was on the previous council, which the Andrews Government sacked largely for an alleged “culture of bullying” at City Hall.

Ms Grzybek, a 41-year-old mother of two, planned to campaign on community safety, lower rates, and a “fair share for the north”.

She described herself as a “passionate member” of her community after living in Lara for 38 years, during which time she had served on several community groups.

“Just like everyone living in the north, I believe we owe our children a safer and healthier future,” she said.

“I want my boys and every other child living in the north to grow up in a positive community that looks after them, that keeps them away from crime and that lets them reach their potential.

“We can improve lighting in public spaces, we can look at CCTV in problem areas, we can

Report puts rail service in a jam

Overcrowding plagued almost three quarters of peak hour trains on the Geelong line in March, according this week’s damning Auditor General report.

The report also showed 52.8 per cent of peak hour trains exceeded maximum capacity between July 2016 and March 2017.

Public Transport Users Association Geelong convener Paul Westcott described overcrowding as a huge problem.

“There are trains in the morning which are already full before they leave Geelong and North Geelong,” he said.

Mr Westcott called on V/Line to increase train lengths to up to six carriages to add seats.

“V/Line in their wisdom have standardised a three-carriage length,” he said.

“They’ve obviously decided for their own convenience they will keep all trains the same. It might be OK for them but it’s not for the passengers.”

Patronage increased by 80 per cent on the Geelong line since the opening of the Regional Rail Link, and Tarneit and Wyndham Vale stations in June 2015.

“It’s a victim of its own success in a way but something needs to be done,” Mr Westcott said.

Greens transport spokesperson Samantha Dunn said mismanagement by the current and previous State Governments would see more passengers standing in future.

“Labor and Liberal have neglected V/line and failed to plan for growth.”

Ms Dunn said the Greens had based their policy on a 2011 V/Line blueprint for Victorian railways to make the line a “serious commuter service”.

The plan included electrifying the Geelong line, she said. But she welcomed recent commitments to the duplication.

“It’s good to see parts of this this plan finally being operationalised,” she said.

A new Brougham Street sculpture has been terrifying nearby workers, who have since tentatively named the “bold” artwork ‘Eddy’.

Jamieson Parsons thought the sculpture was a man who “wasn’t looking well” until she noticed its base.

“This one freaked me out so bad yesterday,” the Leopold local said. “But he’s part of the group now.”

The new sculpture has become a favourite hangout for Jamieson and her colleagues, like Highton’s Ash Khavari.

“It’s pretty cool - I thought it was a person a few times,” the 24-year-old said.

“We talked about naming him Eddy.”

Me, Myself and iPhone is one of three sculptures which Revitalising Central Geelong installed around the city this week.

The artist, Anne Anderson, said her sculpture addressed people’s obsession and “overuse” of social media, and its threat to “normal communication and social skills”.

“I probably don’t get that by looking at it but if you’re led there you sort of get the idea of what the artist is thinking,” Ash said.

“I’m probably a slave to the media like this bloke.”

Newcomb’s Chris Beynon said the “bold piece” depicted a man using social media as “armour”.

“It looks like it could be symbolic how we tune out of society to protect against our own insecurities,” he said.

Geelong’s Caitlin Murphy was similarly impressed.

“I like it - I can see the deterioration on the outside,” she said.

But she disagreed with the sculpture’s earphones depicting insulation, saying music helped people connect and share.

The other sculptures include Tranquility, on the corner of Ryrie and Swanston streets and Sydney Parade, and Rescue, on the corner of Cunningham Street and Western Beach Road.

Rescue depicts a mystery force plucking seven ships from the sea, symbolising the Earth’s continents, according to artists Julie Collins and Derek John.

“Symbolically it points to global responsibility for issues such as climate change, poverty, migration, population and consumer waste,” Julie said.

Letters 20-plus down, one tree saved I read with interest Double Take in last week’s Geelong Indy, regarding the long-buried historic steps in Johnstone Park and the inability of council to remove a single tree so they could be restored.

Two weeks before Christmas last year, City of Greater Geelong advertised an application regarding its water garden plans for Johnstone Park.

Part of the application was to gain permission for the removal of 20-plus trees from the park.

Approval was needed from relevant government bodies including Heritage Victoria.

At that time of year most people were a little bit busy, and possibly council hoped this. It was also only at very short notice.

I printed some flyers and placed them around the town, and hand-delivered a written objection to Spring Street a few hours before objections closed the week before Christmas.

Unfortunately, permission was granted for the application and a few months ago the 20-plus trees were removed, making way for a so-called greener park.

It’s strange how the powers that be are now concerned about damaging a single tree!

PM wimps out on gay marriage I feel uncomfortable on the issue of same-sex marriage.

However, I do believe in democracy, so if the vast majority of Australians believe that same-sex marriage should be legalised then the majority should prevail.

We apparently have a Prime Minister who lacks intestinal fortitude, rejecting his own personal view and that of the majority in some strange, misguided attempt to maintain the policy of the discredited former PM and the extreme right wing of the Liberal Party.

Now is the time to show leadership, which is why he was elected.

Power of death Let us hope that the proposed legislation to legalise euthanasia and assisted suicide fails to pass in the Victorian Parliament.

If a civilisation fails to ensure that the lives of its people are protected from the predations of powerful forces, it is on the road to social fragmentation and ruin.

In Victoria we see that the ancient laws, customs and practices that have supported the sanctity of human life are being dismantled - first of all through the legalisation of abortion and now by the encouragement of euthanasia.

The forces attacking human life in Victoria are led by the secular humanist ideologues in the bureaucracies and their political fellow-travellers in the political parties.

Sadly, these people see that the accelerated death of one of our fellow citizens at the hands of the medical profession is preferable to us being prepared to engage in the possibly difficult option of continuing to love, support and encourage our loved ones in their final journey.

If those facing death cannot trust those nearest to them to look after them rather than do them away, then society is fundamentally weakened.

When living’s a crime It is not dying that worries people so much, it’s the process leading to death, which can be painful, distressful and traumatic.

Making that process as comfortable as possible is important, so palliative care might have a role in this regard.

When sufficient comfort cannot be provided it is morally appropriate to grant the terminally ill the right to end their lives via physician-assisted suicide, if they so desire and are competent enough to make the decision.

To require any human to live in severe pain and discomfort during the end-phase of their life is purely and simply inhumane and therefore, arguably a crime against humanity.

Once upon a possum’s death Once upon a time, just a few weeks ago, in a town formerly known as Pivot City, a prodigiously plump possum turned up its toes across the road from City Hall.

A passerby perceived that the passive possum had passed-out some time previously, and advised council of the decaying cadaver that had decamped close to its dignified doorstep.

However, the pedestrian had to reiterate this report repeatedly for days without any response, except that dead possums pose serious potential risks to council workers.

Furthermore, the council workers pleaded they did not have precise points of reference and could not locate the comatose carcass, so presumably the whole gang had head colds and had lost their sense of smell.

Suffice to say, another swag of sleuths diligently discovered the elusive expired possum and their information resulted in the removal of the long-departed creature.

City Hall defended its tardiness and decreed that their contractors had been trained in the safe, but apparently not swift, removal of dead animals and had the appropriate safety equipment!

I wonder what those safe-working tools might be. Rubber gloves, face-masks, flyspray, huge forceps, giant scoop-nets, large wheelie bins?

Perhaps they should also invest in electronic sensing devices to speed up retrieval operations!

Nuclear power is relatively inexpensive, clean and green, with advanced technology to KO the naysayers.

Placed in the hands of non-double-dipping providers, which is currently not the case, nuclear power would be the sought-after source of power for jobs-providing industry, reliant families and the infirm.

The flaw in this idea is that all religions are imagined to be the same.

It could be useful to imagine a world influenced by faith. What might be lost of our Australian heritage without a Christian basis at the time of settlement?

Could we imagine our present situation if we had been settled under Hinduism, or that we were now able to remove Islam from Australia?

In examining religions, Jesus pointed out that different trees produce different fruits. Practices are the results of our basic beliefs.

In the past decade our Christian heritage has been undermined.

The Biblical concepts of life’s sanctity are challenged by euthanasia, birth sexuality is questionable, and marriage can be whatever we decide.

Traditional beliefs are constantly attacked by a persistent, vocal minority intent on imposing its will on society.

I doubt that these protesters would ever accept the decision of a majority through a plebiscite.

At the same time, any examination of the basic doctrines of the Koran is studiously avoided in another example of politically correct behaviour impacting our society.

History reveals that Christianity always fights for the truths revealed in its scripture and that these truths have survived despite the fiercest opposition.

Open minds understand climate Mr Darryl Rowe’s letter in the 21 July Indy on the topic of settled science, showed that open-minded people do exist when it comes to understanding what is actually happening within our climate.

I appreciated that the Indy decided to print his comments because some newspapers are endeavouring to close off the topic.

My experiences and the adventures of the Trump reign have produced a book of questions that the press has apparently failed to factually answer.

Climate-related scientists have been quiet and patient, presenting their findings in journals rather than local papers, so they lack the coverage this subject needs to show the general public what is actually happening.

Hey Santa Claus ... it’s ho-ho Kev

By Justin Flynn There’s no doubt that Kevin Bloody Wilson is one of Australia’s most iconic comedians.

He’s stood the test of time. People love his complete lack of political correctness. He takes them back to a time when things were simple.

Now 70, Wilson is showing no signs of slowing down.

Speaking to the Indy before his national tour, Wilson said his longevity in the entertainment business was a result of the pure enjoyment of what he does.

“I stay excited by it because it’s a hobby that’s turned into a career,” he said.

“If it all fell over tomorrow, I’d still do it. I love what I do. I revel in every minute of it and I love meeting people.”

Wilson will be performing at The Sphinx in Geelong along with his daughter, who goes by the stage name of Jenny Talia.

“She’s a ripper, but she’s worse and even more vulgar than I am,” Wilson said.

Since starting out as an amateur comedian in the rough and tumble mining town of Kalgoorlie, Wilson has been a household name for decades.

“I just thought I might be a journeyman muso,” he said.

“When I first started doing this, it was all blokes who turned up to my shows, but then they started bringing their wives. You see three generations of the same family coming to see the show.

There is no real demographic. The first thing

I do is declare the area a political correctnessfree zone. If you don’t like what I do, don’t come.”

Wilson enjoys performing in rural Australia and has been to Geelong many times.

“I’ve been going there for years - I’ve been thrown out of Geelong heaps of times,” he said.

Wilson’s new show includes plenty of brandnew material. He will shortly release his 19th album - a Christmas album - which leads me to my next question - “What’s your most requested song?”

Predictably it’s ‘Hey Santa Claus’ with those now famous, but taboo, lyrics. “Living Next Door to Alan is probably next on the list,” he said.

“There’s a core of songs that you always get asked for, but there’ll be a lot of new stuff. I’ve released an album since the last time I was in Geelong,” he said.

“It’s equally as important to get to rural areas.

We’re very laid-back about most things.”

Wilson laments the standard of comedy these days, because artists are generally restricted in what they can say on TV. “I only see the stuff on telly and to be honest it’s pretty ordinary,” he said.

“They’re not free to do what they want to do.

It’s sanitised.”

Chisel tribute is pure rolled gold

By Justin Flynn Who doesn’t love belting out Khe Sanh, Flame Trees or Choir Girl during a night out with friends?

The classic Cold Chisel hits are ingrained into the Australian music psyche.

After doing the rounds for 17 and a half years, tribute band Gold Chisel is still in high demand for its reputation as the closest thing to the real Cold Chisel.

Lead singer Andy Lutze has been portraying the legendary Jimmy Barnes for years, and still loves what he does.

“I was getting told I sounded like Jimmy Barnes long before people knew who he was even though they knew who Cold Chisel were,” he said.

“I never really wanted to do Jimmy Barnes’ stuff, I just wanted to establish an ID of my own.

My brother said, ‘bite the bullet and just do a Cold Chisel show’ and it went from there. Initially, when we put it together, we said we’ll have a lot of fun and maybe get a couple of years out of it, but we’re still packing out places everywhere.”

The band has just returned from a packed out tour of the Northern Territory, and will be at Geelong RSL on 12 August.

“We haven’t played at the RSL before, and it’s been a few years since we’ve been to Geelong, so we’re looking forward to it - it’s a great place,” Lutze said.

Lutze said the band thrived on playing gigs in rural Australia.

“We’ve seen just about every part of Australia that there is to see, and we get paid for it,” he said.

“It’s always lively - there’s always something happening here,” says function manager Kata Jurjevic.

The club’s fish night is Kata’s favourite, with newly returned chef Jack Xu cooking fresh snapper, squid and garfish on an open-fire grill.

Friday Fish Night is also a family favourite with a jumping castle and face painter to keep the kids entertained.

“That’s our busiest night,” Kata says.

Jack has 25 years in the business, and his menu is delicious mix of bistro classics and Croatian favourites, like cabbage rolls and traditional meats.

“He’s very friendly and loves the Croatian community which is great,” Kata says.

“He’s an excellent chef, and he’s always willing to go above and beyond.”

Kata has worked at the club as function manager since October, and is proud to be part of the Croatian community.

“There’s a big Croatian representation in Geelong, especially in Bell Park,” she says.

But everyone is welcome at the club and many local ethnic groups hold their annual functions there.

“We get a quite a big mixture,” Kata says.

The club has AFL on the big screen and, of course, the Croatian soccer team’s international games.

Kata says her friendly staff work hard to create an enjoyable experience for customers.

“Most of them are in the community - their parents are members here.”

Touch Up Guys can visit customers at home or the workplace for on-the-spot service and repairs.

Local mechanic Mark Goodear brought 28 years of working on luxury vehicles with him when he joined Geelong West Automotive a few months ago.

Geelong West Automotive is the city’s independent specialists in Volvo, Peugeot, Renault and Citroen, which Mark has serviced since starting as an apprentice at age 16.

“That’s all I’ve ever known,” the workshops’ new part-owner and manager says.

“Our workshops are tooled up especially to service these luxury European vehicles.”

Mark prides himself on his attention to detail, which is what any luxury car owner would expect.

He joins fellow mechanics Adam Hunter, Gordon Cuthill and Ben Buckle as part owner of the workshop.

The team also includes George Bellingham, who has over 40 years’ experience working with Volvo.

“They’re very dedicated,” he says, “I’ve known them most of my life.

“We all used to work together at another car dealership in Geelong.”

Geelong West Automotive has been extremely busy servicing luxury vehicles, along with carrying out roadworthy inspections, repairs, electronical work and tyres.

“We’ve just put on a full-time apprentice to help keep up with demand,” Mark says.

And in the coming weeks the workshop will undergo renovations to double its capacity.

“These changes will allow us to keep up to date with latest technology and equipment, as well as to better cater for our busy workload.”

Mark and his family love Geelong, and he is a passionate Geelong Cats member.

“I couldn’t imagine a better place to raise a family, work and live,” he says.

By Josip Zilic With their fate sealed in relegation back to NPL2 in 2018, the North Geelong Warriors can turn their attention to getting the most out of the remaining two matches, starting with their last home match this Saturday afternoon against Melbourne Knights.

The Knights will face the unenviable task of the playoff with 12th spot secured. To date, the playoff position in NPL1 has been a poisoned chalice for teams landing in that position, and hopefully for their sake they can turn the tables on that record.

Both sides this week will come into the round fresh with last weekend being a bye round.

The Warriors last hit out was a 1-1 draw away to fellow relegated side St Albans Saints.

In that contest, the culmination of what the Warriors experienced throughout 2017 came to the fore - long periods of control, a multitude of chances and other than Matt Thorne’s opener via

Land-based anglers at St Helens found large numbers of garfish willing to take small amounts of silverfish suspended under a float.

Walking the waterfront and casting soft plastics produced pinkie snapper and the odd Australian salmon to 40cm. Matching plastics with jig heads heavy enough to make long casts caught the biggest bags of fish.

St Leonard’s fished well for squid, with anglers casting size-three artificial jigs from the pier banking reasonable numbers into the evenings.

Queenscliff produced a few large squid but with the wild weather held anglers back.

Surf beaches continued fishing well for large numbers of salmon on metal lures or baits such as pilchard and blue bait. Bancoora was the standout location, with Jan Juc and rock platforms between Anglesea and Lorne also popular.

Surf Coast creeks continued producing quality winter bream. Scrub worms and freshwater yabbies were the baits of choice, while lure anglers were successful with lightly weighted grub-style plastics fished in the deeper parts of estuary systems.

Freshwater anglers landed some well-conditioned redfin at Wurdee Boluc Reservoice. Long casts helped angler achieve better numbers of fish.

Lake Bolac kept anglers chasing rainbow trout busy. Trolling shallow-diving minnow lures resulted in fish to 1.5kg.

Closer to home, the Barwon River in Geelong gave up some redfin to 30cm on soft plastics and small hard-body lures.

Next week should provide some chances to target big squid at Queenscliff, while freshwater anglers should keep casting away at Wurdee Boluc.

Geelong’s recent record against Richmond is one of the more remarkable winning streaks in AFL history.

The stats make compelling reading. The Cats haven’t tasted defeat against the Tigers since round 9 in 2006, making it 12 consecutive wins.

The Cats have won 17 of their past 19 games against Richmond at Simonds Stadium and 24 of their past 30 against the Tigers at all venues.

No team has won as many matches against Richmond by 60 points or more than Geelong has. Not one player on the Richmond list has been involved in a win against Geelong.

It’s as lopsided as it gets.

But fast forward to round 21, 2017 and there’s never been a better time for the men from Punt Rd to buck the trend.

The Cats are decimated by injury and suspension with Tom Hawkins and Mitch Duncan feeling the wrath of the MRP during the week and Joel Selwood set to miss the rest of the home and away season with an ankle injury.

Patrick Dangerfield returns from a one-game suspension but Nakia Cockatoo, Mark Blicavs and George Horlin-Smith are all still on the injury list.

In front of what will be a full house at Simonds Stadium tomorrow afternoon, the game is, basically, a mini final.

A win to Richmond will virtually guarantee a top four spot while the Cats can lay similar claims.

Geelong rarely loses two games in a row at its Moorabool St fortress, but that’s exactly what confronts the side if it loses tomorrow.

The Cats were humbled by a resurgent Sydney last week and will go in as underdogs tomorrow.

The Tigers have been the surprise packet of the season. Sitting third on the ladder, Richmond still needs one win from its last three games to guarantee a finals berth. Lose their last three and there’s still a possibility Richmond could finish - wait for it - ninth.

Dangerfield is a massive inclusion but is offset by the loss of Selwood and Duncan. Richmond’s midfield is in fine form with Brownlow Medal favourite Dustin Martin, captain Trent Cotchin, Dion Prestia and the unheralded Kane Lambert all playing good footy.

Richmond’s defence is the stingiest in the competition and with no Hawkins, the Cats may struggle to kick a winning score.

Josh Caddy kicked four goals last week for the Tigers and he returns to Simonds Stadium after being traded by Geelong last year.

History usually counts for little in football, but Geelong’s imposing record could play in the minds of the Tigers’ players.

Still, the circumstances surrounding the Cats’ depleted side all points to a Richmond win.

Beware the wounded the Cat. This side has been so good over the past decade that tipping against it is always a dangerous thing to do.

If the Tigers win this, it will be well and truly Tiger Time.

Richmond by 11 points.
