Mr Wood has said publicly he is unlikely to be the only MP to share this view, adding the Liberal Party was no longer bound by the plebiscite policy if the new marriage bill made it to parliament. Mr Wood’s stance received a mixed reaction on social media, with some warmly welcoming his position and others posting their opposition to same-sex marriage. Meanwhile, Liberal Leader Malcolm Turnbull last week maintained the Party’s stance was still for a plebiscite, though that was knocked down in parliament in November last year. Mr Turnbull has reiterated to the media that the Liberal Party has a tradition of allowing MPs to cross the floor - but there is no doubt this would place him under pressure. The decision to host Monday’s partyroom meeting on the issue came after five Liberal MPs came out in support of Mr Smith’s marriage equality bill. Among the Liberal MPs to have declared their support publicly are Tim Wilson, as well as Warren Entsch and Trevor Evans.

While the Liberal Party on Monday 7 July was to thrash out its policy over same-sex marriage, La Trobe MP Jason Wood has made his position abundantly clear. As Liberal backbenchers again brought the issue to the fore last week, Mr Wood came out on the front foot, saying he would ‘respect the electorate’s decision’ and would vote in favour of same-sex marriage, if it came to a vote in parliament. The Liberal MP’s stance is significant because he could end up defying internal party pressure not to cross the floor on this issue; a position which, along with other Liberal backbenchers, could work to place Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull under significant leadership pressure. Liberal backbenchers last week led the charge to put same-sex marriage back on the table, with a group vowing to support a private member’s bill from Western Australian senator, Dean Smith. Mr Smith is pushing for a parliamentary vote on marriage equality. A Wood staff member last week told the ‘Mail’, Mr Wood’s position always had been to back the electorate, with a recent poll showing La Trobe to be in favour of same-sex marriage. On his Facebook page, Mr Wood left no-one wondering about his position, posting: “Like I said some time ago when I polled the electorate in #LATROBEVOTES, if it comes to a vote in parliament, I will support the views of my electorate and vote in favour of samesex marriage."
