issue with braking, particularly in the wet,” he said.

“The drain, (even) after minimal rain and after being repaired about two weeks ago, has already washed into the storm water pits. We haven’t even had any decent rain either. “(Yarra Ranges Council) needs to wake up and be taken to task for allowing money to be wasted in an unproductive manner, again.”

Mr Barrot believes these kind of “half-baked patch-up jobs” are starting to become a theme around the area and someone needs to be held to account.

“I’m a big believer in doing things properly the first time around. If you spend a little more money and do it properly, it may end up saving you money down the track," he said.

“Not to mention this is an eyesore and potentially dangerous for

the community.”

The school crossing in question is used by students and parents of Birmingham Primary School, with the road itself one of the busiest in Mount Evelyn, connecting commuters to Swansea and Hereford roads.

The 'Mail’ has attempted to contact Yarra Ranges Council and will endeavour to publish a response at a later date.

Benz gives kids a home Mount Dandenong resident Margaret Kogelman has donated her beloved 1958 Mercedes Benz 220S for auction to help prevent youth homelessness, through Kids Under Cover’s Donate Your Car program.

The Mercedes has been in the family since Margaret’s father bought the car secondhand in 1971.

After her father passed away, Margaret took ownership of the car, while her husband always serviced and looked after the vehicle.

“It has been my everyday drive for the past 43 years,” she said.

“We brought the kids home from hospital in it, took it on family holidays and to weddings.

“Friends of ours have a similar one, so we did a few weddings where our friends would take the bride and groom, and we would take the bridal party.

“We tried to sell the Mercedes when we bought a new car, but I was too funny about who it goes to.

“I wanted it to go to someone who would look after it well, and appreciate its history.

“Donating it to Kids Un-

der Cover is a nice way to say goodbye, and to help young people who are in need.”

Chief executive officer of Kids Under Cover, Jo Swift, expressed her gratitude to Margaret.

“Kids Under Cover is focused on preventing youth homelessness through practical measures and early intervention.

“Donations like this assist us in providing physical support - including building relocatable studios for young people to live in, while remaining connected to family and support networks, providing the valuable space they need.”

Donations of vehicles like Margaret’s Mercedes Benz are essential for Kids Under Cover, as 100 per cent of the proceeds from the sale of the vehicles are directed back to the charity.

Helping to prevent youth homelessness can be simple.

“All it takes is filling in an online form and Kids Under Cover will collect your unwanted car for free,” she said.

“All sale proceeds from the donation help at-risk young people stay connected to home and education.”

They’re off to China, with maths Monbulk MP James Merlino on Thursday 27 July met with hills students before their participation in the 12th World Cup of World Mathematical Olympiad.

To be held in Beijing this month, the students from Billanook and Mooroolbark East primary schools will be challenged to apply creative and integrated methods to solve mathematical problems using creativity, teamwork and intuition.

The 12 students will compete on Wednesday 9 August.

The World Mathematical Olympiad allows students from more than 20 countries and 300 cities to participate in the event, with the vision to permit students to demonstrate their critical thinking and mathematical skills, as well as engaging in a cultural exchange.

At the conclusion of the competition, students will participate in a Beijing tour, including visiting the Great Wall of China.

Mr Merlino said it was great to see local students representing their community on an international stage.

“We want to see more students excelling in areas like mathematics and science because these are skills that we know employers will be looking for now and into the future,” he said.

Education Minister James Merlino met with the students before they headed off to China.

Aussie Post delivers digital The Cockatoo and Silvan post offices are one of over 120 post offices to have received a digital upgrade as Australia Post rolls out new services across Victoria.

The upgrade is being billed as providing ‘one stop shops’ for digital identity services such as tax file number applications, identity photos, land title ID checks, working with children checks and more.

Overseeing the roll-out is Roger Revere, State Manager for Victoria, who said many were delighted to see more Victorian customers with access to these services.

“Previously, all of these applications had to be done in hard copy,” Mr Revere said.

“For example, customers would have to bring their own photos with them or arrange a separate appointment to have their pictures taken.

“This meant longer processing times for some customers and it was less convenient.

“We think that local Dandenong Ranges residents will be really pleased at how quickly and securely they can get things done with this digital upgrade.”

One with the homeless

Yarra Ranges Mayor Noel Cliff will be among hardy volunteers sleeping rough on Saturday.

His contribution pales in comparison to fellow councillor Tim Heenan, who has racked up more than 130 nights of sleeping in a cardboard box.

Cr Heenan began sleeping out during Homeless Week in 2008 to raise awareness of the problem of homelessness.

A great Aussie survivor chosen

By Derek Schlennstedt Aimee Stanton, 23, from Lilydale is one of 24 castaways who were chosen to compete on the Australian Survivor TV show.

Stanton has lived in Lilydale and Mooroolbark for her entire life and worked as a plumber before she went on the show.

In an interview with the Lilydale Leader, Stanton said being a former plumber helped her build a shelter.

To win the spot on the Channel 10 hit show, Aimee had to beat almost 16,000 other applicants and still remains a likely winner.

This is the tenth year in which he has withstood the winter freeze for nights on end to show his solidarity with those who are less fortunate.

He got out his cardboard box last Friday, and will sleep in it every night until Sunday.

“I estimate I have clocked up around 900 hours sleeping rough - and I am luckier than most, with a cardboard box and even a couple of blankets,” said the brave councillor.

This year he will have the luxury of a sleeping mat, thanks to the creativity

and generosity of a local woman, Lisa, who made the mat from recycled plastic garbage bags.

Cr Heenan said he was passionate about increasing awareness of homelessness.

Homelessness, he said, came in many forms, with a disturbingly large number of people now sleeping in cars.

“We know there are lots of people sleeping in cars in the Yarra Ranges.

This is a huge shire, covering two and a half thousand square kilometres, so it is easy for the homeless to be invisible,

but they are there,” he said.

Briefly Operation Crusty The Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol has concluded Operation Crusty which was ran throughout the Yarra Ranges from 6 July to 1 August.

Targeting unlicensed and drug impaired drivers; the operation detected 137 individuals committing 179 offences.

Of those detected, police found 15 counts of driving under the influence of drugs, 28 unlicensed / suspended drivers, 73 speeding motorists, 27 unregistered motor vehicles and seven vehicles were deemed unsafe or defected.

Police also impounded six vehicles and breath tested 627 motorists.

Although the operation has finished, members of the Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol will continue to target drug- affected and unlicensed drivers.

Drink driving charges laid A Yarra Ranges woman who blew .11 at Mount Evelyn after a night at the pokies will take her luck on drink-driving charges at Ringwood Magistrates' Court.

Warburton Sergeant Tom Wilkinson said the incident served as a warning to people planning a night out at a licenced venue to plan their exit strategy.

“People who go to these venues when consuming alcohol can get caught up staying longer

than they may have planned,” he said.

“They should have a plan to ensure they can get themselves home safely, and keep others safe on the roads.”

Police allege that a male driver and female passenger drove east down Burwood Highway towards Tecoma after failing to pay for their fuel.

The celebrated Father Bob McGuire was guest speaker at the launch of Homelessness Week at Lilydale on Monday 7 August.

The much-loved priest was as entertaining as ever, but the message he had was a sober one - that much more needs to be done to ensure no person is without a home.

He pointed out that there are many reasons which lead people to become homeless, and that while federal and state governments could be doing more, “the best natural resource is the community”.

“We can’t have community without the five ‘Cs’,” he added, naming these as care, concern, compassion, communication and above all, common sense.

He congratulated the Lilydale and wider Yarra Ranges community on taking steps to address homelessness.

Monday’s launch at the Lillydale Lake Community Room was organised

by Holy Fools and Anchor, two of the agencies which support homeless and at-risk people in the Yarra Ranges.

Jay Church from Anchor said that her organisation found that early intervention and prevention were the most effective ways to deal with homelessness.

“Homelessness is all around us,” said Neal Taylor from Holy Fools.

“We are here today to put a visible face on it, and to recognise that these are human beings who are homeless.”

He said he would like to see a foundation made up of agencies working together, with the support of community funding, to create housing solutions.

The immediate need, he said, was for a drop-in centre or day refuge in the Lilydale area - somewhere where people would feel safe, where they could relax with couches and TV, free tea and coffee and computers to enable job searches.

The Yarra Ranges Homeless Winter Sleepout at Lilydale’s Melba Park aims to raise awareness of the need for such a centre. On Saturday 12 August from 6pm members of the public are

Helping yourself - actively One of the best things anyone can do to improve their health and well-being is to get involved in their local community and be physically active.

In order to give people in the local area the opportunity to do just that, we need to have the right facilities in place for community and sporting groups of all types.

One of my main priorities is to help deliver first-rate facilities that people of all ages can be proud of and enjoy.

I’m glad to report that hills residents will soon enjoy new community and sporting facilities. Last Tuesday we celebrated the start of construction of the Upwey Tecoma Community

Recreation and Sporting Hub, or UTCRASH as it’s known.

When UTCRASH is complete it will be a sight to behold.

The new hub will provide a modern and multipurpose space for around 23 local community and sporting groups,

including 2500 members and 1150 school students and staff.

It will feature over 1100 square metres of multi-purpose community spaces.

There will be a commercial kitchen, a gym, canteen, change rooms, offices and meeting spaces.

It really is the complete works and I can’t wait to see it when it is complete.

It has been supported financially by all levels of government, the participating clubs and Bendigo Bank.

I’m proud the State Government has delivered $1.5 million to this exciting project.

It’s a worthwhile investment and one that will pay itself back over years to come. Healthier, more active and more socially engaged people will be the result.

But much more importantly we must recognise the hard work of all those who made UTCRASH happen.

These buildings might seem to appear out of nowhere but the reality is that they are the result of tireless advocacy over many years.

People like Andrew Peterson, Andrew Fullagar and Alan Stevenson (and many others) put in the hard yards and worked with all levels of government to secure funding.

Works start on community hub Upwey and Tecoma residents will soon enjoy new community and sporting facilities, with construction starting on the Upwey Tecoma Community Recreation and Sporting Hub (UTCRASH).

Monbulk MP James Merlino had the pleasure of turning the first sod on Tuesday 1 August, with dignitaries present to witness the historic occasion, including La Trobe MP Jason Wood and Yarra Ranges Mayor Noel Cliff.

The new hub will provide a modern and multi-purpose space for over 20 local community groups, including 2500 members and 1150 school students and staff.

With over 1100 square metres of multi-purpose community spaces, a commercial

kitchen, a gym, canteen, offices and meeting spaces, the facility will be of huge value to many in the community.

Mr Merlino said the hub was part of the Victorian Government’s commitment to delivering high-quality sport and recreation facilities throughout the state.

The government contributed $1.5 million towards the project, including $1 million grant from the Growing Suburbs Fund (GSF) and $500,000 through the Community Facilities Funding Program.

The Federal Government contributed $500,000, with the Bendigo Bank and the UTCRASH community contributing $250,000 each. Yarra Ranges Council contributed $1.1 million.

If it wasn’t for these local heroes it simply would never have happened.

Our community owes them a great deal.

The extensive work by the UTCRASH committee to develop and present a master plan made all the difference.

They should be incredibly proud that the first sod has been turned; this project will meet the rising needs of our community and provide a permanent home to many groups who currently move between multiple locations.

We want to make things easier for them and UTCRASH will do just that.

Losing out on the pokies

By Peter Douglas Poker machine gamblers in the Yarra Ranges are among the ‘biggest losers’ in the state, with more than $28 million lost on the pokies in the region over the past financial year.

This equates to around $77,000 lost each day within the local government area (LGA).

Despite relatively few venues in the region, with just nine, the region shows an appetite for gambling that is on par with similar-size regional shires within Victoria, such as East Gippsland ($23 million), Mildura ($25 million) and Shepparton ($31 million).

The recent statistics, released by the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation, point towards gamblers gravitating towards Lilydale when wanting to play the pokies.

For the Yarra Ranges LGA, 61.4 per cent of losses were recorded from Lilydale venues, with the suburb also possessing the top three venues in terms of money lost on poker machines.

In terms of highest to lowest lost on pokies, the venues were the Crown Hotel, York on Lilydale and The International.

The statistics also showed there were no signs of gamblers slowing down, either, with the region bucking a state-wide decline of 0.27 per cent to record a 0.2 per cent overall rise in money lost from the previous financial year.

However, the $28 million dropped into Yarra Ranges poker machines pales in comparison to neighbouring City of Casey, which recorded $127,093,819.

Grants for heritage Cardinia Shire Council is calling on applicants for its 2017-’18 Heritage Grants.

The grants offer eligible community groups the chance to secure up to $5000 in funding to repair or conserve places of heritage significance.

These grants are available to eligible community groups for suitable projects, including: Repairs and conservation work; Capital works that improve community access; and The development of conservation management or interpretation plans.

Only project sites identified on the Cardinia Shire Planning Scheme Heritage Overlay are eligible for funding.

Applications for funding of staged projects will be also considered.

Council’s sustainability and heritage planner, Janene Vurlow, said the grants are intended to assist community groups to complete projects that improve the condition and long-term conservation of places and sites of heritage significance across the shire.

“The types of projects that could be funded under the Heritage Grants program are varied and all funded projects will ultimately promote the preservation and promotion of heritage sites,” she said.

“For example, projects might range from interpretive signage and enhancing cultural tourism potential to improve public access to sites.”

Residents, clubs, businesses and community groups are being called on to help design and get involved in the future of Lilydale, with a major event to be held in mid-September.

The Lilydale Summit will be held on Thursday 21 September from 2am to 9pm at Box Hill Institute’s Lilydale Lakeside Campus’s LA Building on Jarlo Drive.

Yarra Ranges Mayor, Noel Cliff, said the event would bring together members of the community to discuss ideas for the future of the town, with developments on the horizon.

“We’re in a unique situation with Lilydale, where there are numerous changes ahead, including the planning of the Cavehill Estate, and the possibilities of a bypass for Lilydale and the removal of the Maroondah Highway level crossing,” Cr Cliff said.

Making a big mOVe

By Kath Gannaway Young music students from across the Yarra Ranges have performed with musicians from Orchestra Victoria in a spectacular symphony concert in Healesville.

The students from Year 7 to Year 12 took part in a two-day student workshop in the lead-up to a full orchestral concert on Thursday night, 3 August, as part of Orchestra Victoria’s ‘On the mOVe! Healesville’ education program.

The audience was treated to a brilliant and energetic performance with pieces from Strauss, Handel and Haydn to Russian Folk Songs by Liadov, the James Bond Medley by Lopez and The Can-Can by Offenbach.

On the mOVe is a regional program that gives students the chance to learn from world-class musicians in their home communities and to play with a full orchestra, an opportunity aspiring musicians in rural areas may not otherwise have.

With financial support, including Bendigo Bank as principal regional partner, the program is fully subsidised making it financially accessible.

The program itself is intense, rewarding, and judging from the smiles on the faces of the young musicians as they took their final bows, fun!

“Putting up a concert in less than 36 hours from a starting point of never having played together before, and to an expectation of delivering a professional concert, it’s just incredible how far they lift,” said conductor Dominic Harvey.

The students work side-by-side with Orchestra Victoria musicians tutoring individual sections and playing alongside them in the concert.

It is the first time the program has been held in Yarra Ranges and Mr Harvey said the range of abilities was impressive and the enthusiasm and excitement for the opportunities being made available to the young players was wonderful.

Students from other areas also take part in the program, providing an additional opportunity for the musicians to meet peers outside their usual network.

“To have such an enthusiastic and talented group in our first year in Healesville is exciting, and it means next year it will grow,” he said.

“Once the word gets out and the students talk up what they’ve done, and how much they have grown through mOVe, it will encourage others.”

Violinist John Noble said playing alongside the young students was an opportunity for Orchestra Victoria musicians to pass on their skills.

He said the results spoke for themselves.

“At each session you can feel it, hear it and sense it,” he said.

“The audience really feels it too, you can feel the excitement in the air.”

Speaking at the pre-concert launch, Orchestra Victoria general manager Sara Pheasant said the organisation was fortunate to have generous supporters which made the program possible.

Shire’s eye in sky Drones are allowing the Yarra Ranges Council trees team to inspect the municipality’s largest trees - some of which are up to 80 metres tall.

Council arborist and drone pilot Glenn Sheppard said the drone allowed the team, which receives up to 6000 requests for tree inspections per year, to gain a far better understanding of a tree’s condition.

“We found the need for a drone because our trees are so large. It allows us to view around the canopies and spot faults and areas of concern,” he said.

“The Dandenongs are where the larger tree stock is, where the Mountain Ash species is found, as well as the Yarra Valley and Warburton.”

The team of five arborists are able to capture video and still imagery of the canopy, removing the need to climb the tree or bring a mobile tower in which involves traffic control and additional expenses.

“It takes one of us to carry out an inspection now with the drone whereas before we needed five or six of us,” Mr Sheppard said.

“We are saving money on hiring contractors to get up trees, minimising the risks associated with climbing up faulty trees and reducing the use of expensive machinery.”

Thanks to the drone which council purchased in December 2016, the crew can see the extent of hollows or decay in a main stem or branch, damage to the upper canopy or at the top of branches.

Mr Sheppard said only trees deemed hazardous or high risk and not worthy of keeping were removed.

“We try to retain as much vegetation as possible,” he said.

He’s rocked ’em all over

By Derek Schlennstedt Country rocker Michael Meeking has returned home from musical success abroad to rock local audiences, and launch a new album at Sooki Lounge on Sunday 13 August.

The Melbourne-based outfit, Michael Meeking and The Lost Souls, are playing at numerous venues statewide to celebrate the release of their new album, ‘Saturday Night Sunday Morning’.

Meeking said the album was the culmination of several years of work.

As the title suggests, the record is one of two halves, a story of Saturday night highs and Sunday morning lows, all blended into a glorious record of conflicting emotions and contrasting styles.

Much of the album is rooted in the classic Melbourne country-rock sound taking influence from bands such as The Dingoes, Weddings Parties Anything, and Tom Petty, but the album, considered their best yet, sows its own eclectic and unique sound.

Co-produced and engineered by the multi-talented Roger Bergodaz, Meeking said it took them 13 hours to record.

“We went into the studio and

smashed out 13 songs in 12 hours,” he said.

“Most of the songs were put down in one or two takes ... we were very inspired by the sounds and space that Roger had captured in his work with Raised By Eagles and Lost Ragas.”

The band is no stranger to the Dandenong Ranges.

They performed at The End Of The Line festival in previous years and Michael has also taught music at Selby Primary School for more than a decade.

“We played at The End Of The Line a few years ago at the cameo stage and it was fantastic,” he said.

“It’s always great to see so many familiar faces and past students ... we all have a connection to the Dandenongs.”

On finishing the album, Michael said he was pleased but said he would continue to write more songs into the future.

“It’s very satisfying, but I’m now at the point where I’m ready to start working on new songs - it’s not a quick process and it’s also fairly draining but I’m keen to do more,” he said.

Meeking and the Lost Souls will play at Sooki Lounge on Sunday 13 August at 2pm.

Hills alive with Cat Empire leader to play up a storm

By Derek Schlennstedt CAT Empire band leader Felix Riebl will be playing at Montrose Town Centre as part of a national tour dedicated to his second solo album.

Felix has put aside the Ska and Jazz anthems the internationally acclaimed band is infamous for to instead produce a more introspective solo body of work.

Although he will be accompanied by four of the country’s most celebrated musicians on stage, Felix said that audiences could expect a Cat Empire-like show.

“The musicians I worked with are my favourite in the country,” he said.“One thing I’d say about the live show is I always try to get the same intensity and same moment in all my live shows ... but it’s been really interesting in the sense that’s it’s a completely different world and dynamic, and I really enjoyed the challenge,” he said.

The song list in the show will include songs from all of Riebl’s solo albums, “and one or two re-imagined Cat Empire songs“.

ous regional locations across Australia.

He said that this travelling reflected the feel of the album and that he enjoyed touring as it allowed him to discover new places, and that Montrose would be no exception.

“Every other part of touring is the work, and being on stage is the time you get to be in another language with people who are on stage with you and people who are listening and that’s the electric and great part.”

You get to have a closer interaction with the audience, and I really enjoy that - it’s such a travelling album, there’s a real personal mood to it which suits the show,” he said.

“I really enjoyed that in this in your Arms Tour I was able to go to a few regional Victorian locations. ... Montrose is no exception, and I think it’s going to be great.

MARKET SCENE Art mixed with some real passion A resident artist at The Hills Art Market in Emerald, Rose Amara has had a passion for creating intricate mandalas, inkwork, and abstract painting for many years. However recently, her artwork has taken on a different meaning after her four-year-old son Beau was diagnosed with Diplegic Cerebral Palsy (DCP).

“When Beau was born, he underwent gastrointestinal surgery and spent six weeks in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. We were informed Beau had brain damage in the area of his motor skills affecting his lower limbs, and he was diagnosed with DCP,” Rose explained.

“My only concern was caring for my beautiful newborn. I was worried, scared, confused, exhausted and uncertain about what the future may or may not look like.

“I was now navigating this new chapter of our lives, medical appointments, therapy, tests, doctors and research that I had to forget about myself.”

Admitting that she had to remember what it was that helped her process, tick and feel good, Rose began to create and draw. Having always had an attraction to mandalas, the mother of two began crafting them as an appreciation of how they looked and the meditation they produced.

“My artwork is now created and sold to raise funds for Beau to attend special-

ised intensive three-week therapy programs at the NAPA Centre in Sydney,” Rose explained.

“These therapy programs and potential for future surgery will assist Beau in learning to walk, move and live independently. Unfortunately, neither of them are eligible for any kind of funding, so it’s up to us to get him there.”

Through this creative outlet, Rose admits that her love of art has taken on a new meaning. No longer is she just creating art for art’s sake, but is doing something she loves for someone she loves.

“The journey has been a rollercoaster; we have had our share of ups and downs.

But the thing that I have learned through all of this is to never ever give up; ever.

Not on yourself, not on your dreams, not on someone else dreams. It’s all possible.”

Spectacular show

By Peter Douglas Performing in front of up to 10,000 people would be daunting for even the most seasoned professional.

But for students Charlie Mustoe (The Patch Primary) and Olivia Hibbins (Upwey South Primary) it represents an exciting opportunity, as the talented duo prepare to showcase their skills at the Victorian State School Spectacular on Saturday 16 September.

In a fun-filled family event, students from over 200 schools will be participating in dance, music, song and more as part of the huge annual event.

Gaining the chance to hit the stage is no easy task, though, with Charlie and Olivia both needing to audition and beat hundreds of fellow students for the opportunity.

For Charlie, 12, who will fill a role as ensemble vocalist, this will be his first spectacular.

“Me and my friend were kind of wanting to do something, so we decided to audition and I just happened to get in,” Charlie said.

“I often perform with my sister on stage, playing drums, but I also play trombone and sing.”

Meanwhile, for Olivia, 11, this will be her fourth appearance and said the thought of performing in front of a

large audience didn’t faze her.

Olivia will be part of a choir.

“I do get a bit nervous, but very excited, too,” she said.

“I recently played the lead role of Prince Marvellous in a school pantomime. I enjoy singing and dancing.”

Their appearance at the spectacular is no accident, though, with both students practicing hard during

out-of-school hours, including on weekends.

To be a part of the Victorian State Schools Spectacular requires a huge commitment on the students’ part, as well as the schools involved.

Depending upon their role, they commence rehearsals from six months out from the event and those in the Mass Dance and Mass Choir

make weekly rehearsal commitments for about five months before the event.

The Victorian State School Spectacular will run over two shows on Saturday 16 September at Hisense Arena in Melbourne.

The lead see-sawed in the last, and Powelltown had the lead on several occasions, including at the final siren. It took B. Invincible Dragons pad along The Monbulk Rangers Dragons maintained their unbeaten record for the season with an 8-0 defeat of fellow team, the MRSC Centaurs, in the Victorian Churches under-11 competition on Saturday.

Feaver-famed Wheeler makes state cut The sixth Victorian Country Cricket League (VCCL) team of the year has been announced, with Ferntree Gully District Cricket Association’s Feaver Medal winner from last year, Cameron Wheeler, named in the squad.

In the 2016-'17 season, Wheeler grabbed 42 wickets at 11.48, while also scoring 148 runs at 14.90.

Eight regional teams of the year were originally forwarded to the VCCL to be considered for inclusion in the Victorian Country Cricket League team.

Members of the 2016-'17 VCCL team were to be acknowledged at a plaque presentation at the league’s annual general meeting in Melbourne on Sunday 6 August.

The process was adopted by the VCCL as a way of promoting country cricket and its better performers.

It is also seen as a strategy to encourage VCCL selectors to become more fa-

miliar with the talented cricketers in all associations in their regions, not just in the major competitions.

“It is purely a statistical exercise. The VCCL team of the year is decided on the basis of total runs and wickets, the best averages and the most wicket-keeping dismissals. All other variables are discounted,” VCCL chairman of selectors Kelvin White said.

“By asking all regions to compile their best teams, we have had conversations with people right across country Victoria about the merits of their best performers for the season.

“Carrying out this exercise shows players that, statistically, they do stack up against one another.

“We all understand there are different levels of competition, but you can only bat and bowl against the players on the other team.

“Selecting a statistical VCCL team of

the year gives us a starting point for working out our best players, and sorting potential Victorian country squad members for the Australian national championships.”

Mr White admitted the task to select the VCCL team was a fascinating exercise.

“So many good players, so many impressive stats,” he said.

The team contains two opening batsmen, four top and middle order batsmen, an all-rounder, a wicketkeeper and four bowlers, at least one of whom has to be a spinner.
