They spoke out this week after police posted on Facebook images of four young men who were wanted over a violent, roaming brawl in the city centre.

“Yes, the problem is getting worse but, at the end of the day, we’re talking about a bunch of kids,” said one of the traders, none of whom wanted to be identified for fear of retaliation by people frequenting the mall.

Geelong trailed Melbourne municipalities but led regional Victoria for the number of personal bankruptcies in the June quarter, according to new figures.

Children relocated Child care places at Norlane and Corio will remain unchanged despite the closure of 30-year-old centre at the end of the year, according to council administrators chair Kathy Alexander.

Dr Alexander and her two colleagues announced the closure of the Trudy Moritz Centre this week, saying enrolled children would be relocated to a nearby facility for 2018.

Ambulances ‘faster’ Geelong ambulances have slashed their average response times for code-one emergencies over the past year, according to State Government.

Average waits had fallen from 13.18 to 11.36 minutes while times for ambulances arriving within 15 minutes had improved almost 12 per cent, the government said.

A former spokesman for one of the region’s biggest developers will stand for council at October’s elections.

David Withington said he resigned from his corporate affairs role with L Bisinella Developments this week to run for Windemere Ward, covering Lara and parts of northern Geelong.

He has spoken for the company on several council-related incidents, including its ban on former Lara councillor Tony Ansett attending Bisinella’s office and on the company’s failed application to open a quarry near the You Yangs.

Mr Withington worked in public relations at City Hall from 1997 to early 2000, most notably devising Geelong’s Smart Move campaign to attract new residents and build community pride.

He previously worked for Premier John Cain’s Labor State Government in the ’80s after 15 years

Police have charged motorists with 14 offences during a crackdown on “dangerous driver behaviour” in central Geelong.

Drug driving, speeding and using mobile phones were among the offences detected during Operation Share on Wednesday morning, police said.

North Geelong’s historic Osborne House will remain closed until “all safety and costs issues are considered” following a mould outbreak earlier this year, City Hall has announced. Quotes so far for cleaning and repairs to the building totalled $1.5 million without including additional costs such as storage or possible replacement of damaged materials, City Hall said.

Former Geelong mayor Darryn Lyons has slammed a threat to reopen investigations into sacked councillors’ alleged bullying as an “absolute disgrace”.

State MP Christine Couzens warned in last week’s Indy that any former councillors with unresolved bullying allegations against them would go under investigation if they returned to council at October’s elections.

“It is an absolute disgrace to threaten good councillors in this way,” Mr Lyons said in response on Thursday.

“This is a disgusting, not-so-veiled threat to stop good people standing for election.

“I know there are some fantastic people who are going to put up their hands and who want to do good things for Geelong and they should not have to deal with this rubbish.

“It’s an horrendous threat and the people of Geelong rightly feel betrayed by this whole sham of a process.”

The Andrews government sacked the 13-member council last year amid allegations of a bullying culture at City Hall.

The Indy reported earlier this year that a panel investigation had confirmed four bullying incidents, with the consequent departure of “several” staff from City Hall.

Mr Lyons said the investigations simply revealed “robust, political behaviour” but “destroyed” Geelong in the process.

He was still considering whether to stand for reelection as a councillor.

“Every day I get people from every age, ever demographic, every political persuasion including die-hard Labor people, who come up to me and say please stand again,” Mr Lyons said. “I’m exhausted and I have so much work on my plate at the moment but I’m about to go on a long holiday and I still think about the possibility of standing again every day.”

Mr Lyons defended his performance as mayor.

“I did what I could for Geelong. I was JFK and they had to assassinate me.”

Another sacked councillor, John Irvine, said any threat of investigation would fail to deter him from standing again.

“I was certainly aware of totally unacceptable behaviours by some people in the past and I was prepared to talk about it publicly and in the media.

“I stood up in council and challenged those behaviours.”

Mr Irvine said he supplied details of bullying he had witnessed to a panel investigating the allegations.

“I welcomed the investigation and would’ve thought that the people identified would’ve been removed and then the rest of us, who were elected councillors trying to do the right thing by people, could have just carried on with our work.

“I sleep with a clear conscience and I am definitely standing again and I am not fearful of any future investigations.”

Double Take Nature and heritage have clashed in central Geelong, with the latter emerging the loser.

The vanquished in question is an historic but longburied marble staircase leading down from Gheringhap St into Johnstone Park.

The grand flight of 20 steps was buried sometime back in the ’60s, when a pair of accompanying Medici urns were also lost.

The Indy reported two years ago that heritage buffs were keen to have the stairs exhumed and restored as part of works underway now to jazz up Johnstone Park.

But why has nothing happened since?

Apparently the obstacle is a towering nearby gum tree, whose roots have grown across the subterranean stairway.

Double Take understands that restoring the stairs would mean killing the tree, so the stairway is set to stay underground.

Meanwhile next door, City Hall planning boss Peter Bettess was showered in praise, from colleagues at least, after announcing his resignation last week.

Over seven years Peter had shown “outstanding leadership”, said CEO Kelvin Spiller, noting his underling’s “impressive achievements” and “sound professional advice”.

Administrator Kathy Alexander chimed in saying Peter’s performance in Victoria’s third busiest municipal planning environment “speaks for itself”.

How very commendable. But there was a time when his work “spoke for itself” in somewhat more colourful language.

Those were the days of the late ’80s when, as a socalled ‘mature-aged’ university student, Peter submitted a humanities assignment with the evocative title Don’t Fart on Art. Let’s just say it went down like the title’s verb in a crowded tutorial.

The lecturer thrust the assignment straight back, demanding a revised title on the threat that marking would be otherwise withheld. Peter duly complied.

A memorable achievement by Peter, certainly, but perhaps falling short of Kelvin Spiller’s criteria for “impressive”!

Saleyards set for closure

University acts on sex assault report

Ratepayers could save millions of dollars and potentially reap a land-sale windfall after Geelong’s council administrators this week agreed to close the city’s saleyards.

The 150-year-old yards needed an upgrade costing at least $2.9 million but was losing $200,000 a year as trade declined, a council report said.

Geelong ratepayers faced footing the bill despite a separate report revealing that three quarters of stock traded at the site came from outside their municipality.

The previous council had planned to sell the yards, off Weddell Rd and amid suburban North Geelong. A 2014 report to council valued the site at up to $5.4 million.

But after Tuesday night’s decision the yards would now finally close to sheep and cattle sales at the end of the month, City Hall said.

The administrators would “engage” the yards’ poultry operators about “the future of sales” while also developing a precinct plan for the site.

The administrators first closed the yards to sheep and cattle a year ago due to workplace safety issues. An outcry from farmers prompted the administrators to order repairs so sheep sales could resume but they declined to approve work for cattle to return given the high costs and dwindling trade.

Reports to council had been recommending the closure of the saleyards since 1998 “yet a decision has never been made”, said administrators chair Kathy Alexander.

“In making tonight’s decision to permanently close the Geelong Saleyards we’ve taken into account an extensive amount of information and community feedback, including written notification from two selling agents confirming they would not have provided a service if the Geelong Saleyards had reopened for cattle sales, due to the cost of business,” she said.

An independent analysis identified Colac as a potential site for a new regional saleyards, Dr Alexander said.

GOING, GOING...GONE: Geelong Saleyards will close to sales of sheep and cattle at the end of the month, with administrators developing a precinct plan for the site.

“We’ll continue to work with all stakeholders, including our livestock farmers and Colac Otway Shire to ensure a smooth transition of sales.”

The future of the yards was further darkened last month when news reports linked it without

evidence to positive tests for Q fever among Geelong council staff.

Any actual saleyards outbreak of the disease, commonly contracted from livestock, could have a contamination zone spreading to Geelong West, Norlane, Rippleside and Drumcondra.

Deakin University is responding to calls for action following the release of a world first report in which half of its students surveyed claimed that they had been sexually harassed in the past year.

The university will be working with experts from the Barwon Centre Against Sexual Assault (CASA) to improve services on offer to students reporting sexual assault or harassment.

A stronger partnership with CASA and Minerva Community Service will deliver face-to-face training to more than 1000 Deakin staff.

Deakin Vice-Chancellor Professor Jane den Hollander said the university had drawn “a line in the sand”.

The data in the report was based on a sample size of 649 Deakin students.

Professor den Hollander has used media this week to make a personal apology to students, and it would seem that the university is determined to lead the way in changing culture and process around the issue of sexual harassment and assault.

The data showed: · Half of the Deakin students who participated in the study had experienced some form of sexual harassment in the last year either at Deakin or in the community. · 17 per cent of respondents had experienced sexual harassment at Deakin in 2016 (excluding while travelling to and from university). · 8.2 per cent of respondents were victims of sexual assault in 2015 and/or 2016 either at Deakin or in the community. · 2.3 per cent of respondents (that is 15 students) were victims of sexual assault at Deakin in 2015 and/or 2016.

Deakin has identified and briefed 350 of its staff most likely to receive sexual assault disclosures ahead of the release of the AHRC report. Those key staff will also receive further specialist training.

Crafty men mark silver anniversary A crafty bunch of Lara residents has celebrated 25 years of putting their combined handiwork to good use for various community causes.

Lara Woodworkers members and their partners gathered at Little River Hotel this week to celebrate the milestone over lunch and “a beer or two”, said club secretary Jackie Stanger.

The club formed in 1992 on the back of Lewis Harper’s popular woodturning class at Lara’s community centre, Ms Stanger said.

The club began with a membership of 23 before climbing to 28 five years later then settling at a “very active” 17 members in 2017, she said.

“The club is very proud of its work on projects for the community over the years,” Ms Stanger said.

“Annually, members make toys and donate them at Christmas time to the Geelong hospital for the children’s ward. At the request of the hos-

pital, the toys are left in the unpainted state so the children can paint them as part of their recuperation and rehabilitation.”

The club also participated at local fairs where members often fielded requests for items or advice along with offers of materials, Ms Stanger said.

“The club also participates and regularly hosts the regional combined clubs meetings and also visits and welcomes individual clubs to their meetings. Members periodically visit the local retirement village to chat with residents about woodwork and other matters of interest.

The club met on second and fourth Thursday of each month at Lara Secondary College, Ms Stanger said.

A new crackdown could save local people unaware of warrants out for their arrest the embarrassment of officers apprehending them in public, according to Victoria Police.

Operation Arrow would reduce warrant holdings to combat “high volume crime” across Geelong, the Surf Coast and Colac, police spokesperson Sophie Jennings said.

“The operation affords people who are either the subject of warrants, or (who) believe that they may be the subject of a warrant, the opportunity to contact investigators and arrange to have their matters addressed,” she said.

“Up to 40 per cent of people in the local community who are the subject of arrest warrants may not be aware of the existence of the warrant. This may be due to police being unable to later locate people who were interviewed for offences at an earlier time, people who were unable to attend or inadvertently missed a court date or warrants being issued by various other State Government departments where no interview is required.

“The benefit of Operation Arrow is that it affords people … the ability to contact investigators directly and arrange to meet at a suitable time and location.

“It also reduces the likelihood of being arrested in public and being conveyed to a police station, which can not only be inconvenient but often embarrassing.”

Operation Arrow also gave members of the public “the opportunity to contact investigators directly” with information about wanted people, Ms Jennings said.

She appealed for anyone who knew they had a warrant or believed they might have one to contact police.

“Yes, they came in here all the time and try to steal stuff and sometimes they yell at people but, really, we get to know them and we talk to them and we deal with them. It’s not as if they are walking in here with machine guns.”

Another trader said two young people fell into his shop wrestling with each other during a recent brawl.

“The only damage they were doing was to each other and there were no weapons involved. These are kids who aren’t getting educated and they are just getting themselves into trouble.”

Another retailer said distinguishing between problems with “kids” and other people suffering genuine mental health issues was important.

“It’s normally pretty easy to identify the people who have real mental health issues and as long as you treat them with a bit of care and respect, they normally don’t give any trouble,” she said.

“What really breaks my heart is when you see little kids coming in and trying to steal stuff to take outside to their mothers who are sitting outside wearing new Nikes on their feet and doing drugs.”

A trader said she had first-hand experience of a successful police booth when she worked for

many years in Footscray’s mall.

“It was so successful that eventually they took it away,” she said.

“We need to have something happening here that will draw different kinds of people into the area and then the kids will just move off.”

Police this week released images of the four men wanted for questioning over the brawl around 5.30pm on 18 July.

Investigators were told a group of three males initially approached four males and two females in Lt Malop St, Victoria Police said.

Two of the males from the second group then became involved in an altercation with the three men.

The two groups separated before meeting again soon after near Ryrie St. “They became involved in another scuffle inside the centre before again parting ways,” police said.

“The two groups of males came across each other a third time near another exit, where it is believed one of the males from the second group produced a knife from a backpack. No injuries were reported.”

Police believed the males involved were known to each other.

Two lives from a gifted kidney An anonymous kidney donation has given Belmont’s Ebony Holmes the gift of motherhood after a life-changing transplant six years ago.

Ebony’s health issues began in 2002 as a 16-year-old with a diagnosis of Henoch-Schönlein purpure, a disease causing small, raised areas of under-skin bleeding, often with joint and abdominal pains.

Ebony then developed rare kidney disease IgA nephropathy, requiring a transplant donation from her father.

“It happened so quickly,” she said during DonateLife Week from 30 July to 6 August.

“I was lucky Dad was compatible, but within three or four years I had a kidney infection and started getting sick again. In 2010, my kidney completely failed, and I was really sick, throwing up and in hospital for three weeks doing dialysis.

“I chose to do nocturnal dialysis at home, which I did for a year until I got the call for another kidney transplant from an anonymous donor, just before my 30th birthday.”

The operation was a success, improving Ebony’s overall health enough to start a family.

“It’s changed my life. I never would’ve been

able to have my son, which is all I ever wanted.

“I still get really emotional about it, but I’m so grateful.

“If you ever see someone having an organ failure or stuck on dialysis, they’re going through so much that you’d do anything to help them.

“Donors give eight people a lease on life. That’s really a lot, and you can’t take your organs with you.”

More than 1400 Australians need transplants, according to Australia’s organ and tissue authority.

One in three Australians were on the organ donor register although 81 per cent believed registering was important, Barwon Health said.

“Nine in 10 families agreed to donation proceeding when the deceased is a registered organ donor. This drops to just 52 per cent where the deceased was not registered and the family had no prior knowledge.”

Barwon Health advised anyone “willing to save lives” as an organ and tissue donor to discuss the decision with family and friends before registering at register.donatelife.gov.au.

Flickering computers, holed boots, dresses with broken zippers and bike tyres gone flat will be some of the items revived for free at Geelong’s first Repair Cafe this weekend.

St Luke’s Uniting Church, in Highton, will host the event from 1pm and 4pm Saturday after the first repair cafe appeared in Amsterdam eight years.

The foundation behind the initiative, which links skilled volunteers with residents needing free repairs, estimates that more than 400 of the cafes now operate around the world.

Cafe patrons bring broken items to watch, learn or help as the volunteers complete the repairs. Many items are fixed during the event, while more-challenging jobs might be referred to local speciality repairers.

The organisers explained that the volunteers weren’t necessarily tradespeople but they were tinkerers; people who loved to work with objects.

Volunteers could be people who loved bikes and who had learnt to repair and maintain them, the organisers said, while others might be home sewers or just someone who always pulled things apart to learn how they worked.

One of the organisers, Michelle Walker, said the ABC series War on Waste inspired her working group.

“I was talking with a few friends from the church about the War on Waste and how we had seen people going to a repair cafe in Sydney,” she said, “so we were all sitting around and I said we could do something like that and we started asking around and before we knew it was all happening.

“I then approached Geelong for Sustainability and they swung into action and have been a great help in getting everything ready for this weekend.”

Ms Walker said the church already ran a men’s shed which was a ready supply of able volunteers who could help with repairs.

Geelong has completed a very average July, with most weather figures falling well within the normal range.

Daily minimums across the city were around 0.5C cooler than the long-term average and maximums were 0.7C warmer.

Six frosts were recorded when minimums fell to 2C or lower, with the lowest overnight minimum all the way down to -0.2C on 2 July. This was Geelong’s equal third lowest minimum and the coldest since 1994.

The warmest night for the month was recorded on 30 July when 10.9C was the highest minimum since May. The coldest day for July 2017 was the third day of the month when the mercury reached a maximum of only 11.6C. Despite recent commentary about dry conditions, urban Geelong received an average 40mm across 17 days of July.

In comparison, the latest 30-year average of July rain is 44.5mm, so the month this year fell into the normal category again.

The wettest day was 28 July when 11.2mm was recorded at Breakwater.

Across the remainer of the rest, rain measurements ranged from below 50 per cent of normal at Balliang to well over 100 per cent down the coast at Apollo Bay. The totals left the region’s water catchments at 62 per cent of capacity by the end of the month, which was 10 per cent higher than at the same time last year.

Along with July 2017’s six frosts, other weather features for the month included one thunder day, on the 25th, and one very windy day with gusts over 60km/h, on the 29th.

Letters Cats need better tackling I was alarmed to see photographs in last week’s Geelong Indy of a large black cat at Thompson Creek’s estuary, but not because of any likelihood it was the mythical panther.

Feral cats, and wandering household moggies, do an enormous amount of damage to native wildlife.

The area where the cat was seen is a winter refuge for the endangered hooded plover, as well as the New Zealand migratory double-banded plover and many other birds.

The cat was clearly hunting, and the seaweed clumps on the beach are where the birds gain protection from the wind.

Unfortunately, we do not take the problem of wandering and feral cats seriously enough.

They are one of the worst environmental pests we have in Australia, but one we seem unable or unwilling to tackle effectively.

Bully claims a shared burden If the risk of bullying investigations resuming prevents sacked councillors from running again at October’s elections (Geelong Indy, 28 July) then I for one will not lose any sleep.

I don’t want to hear about how no-one was found guilty of any offence against the law or of any breach of policy. The plain fact is that in the history of Victorian self-government, only a small handful of councils have been sacked by the state.

The bar is obviously very liberal considering some of the shenanigans over the years, yet Geelong’s council was still unable to meet any reasonable standard of governance.

As for councillors not investigated by Ms Halliday, I have only one thing to say: the council bears collective responsibility for the failures to abide by proper process.

If they were all going to swim together then they ought to sink together.

If the City of Greater Geelong was serious about bullies then any offending officers would be fired, not moved sideways.

I am sorry to burst Susan Halliday’s bubble but the bullied remain afraid to speak out in fear of losing their jobs. They have formed their own advocacy and support groups externally, remaining vigilant and seeking further legal advice as required.

The ratepayers would prefer the use of Donald Trump’s famous words, “You’re fired”, avoiding future waste of ratepayer money on litigation.

Suspicous minds need fresh faces It would be extremely unwise to allow past councillors to nominate for Geelong’s reborn council.

Some may be innocent of past bullying or self-interest, while others may not. Only they and perhaps the administrators would know who is which.

But even with reported suspicions of State Government manipulating the independent, extensive review, too much smoke and mirrors and credits stained with mud remain to draw a conclusion that the storm has cleared.

Game-changer for last quarter At the fourth quarter of the City of Greater Geelong administration game it’s time to check the scoreboard.

Some brilliant people work at the City but it lacks synergy.

A lot was made of the recent consultation process, which was nice but failed to address the City’s real issues. We can pretend everything will be all right after the October poll, but we all know that won’t be the case without real change from within. Graham Bradbury (Letters, 30 June) raised important issues including accountability, but we don’t want to talk about that.

I have heard council wanted $1000 for a permit to build a fence, also that the cost of a permit for a carport was more than the carport itself.

Would that be fair or reasonable? Also, some businesses have closed apparently because of exorbitant rates or council heavy-handedness.

Then we have the ongoing saga of unnecessarily delayed building permits, along with uproar over parking fee increases and council removing about a dozen car parks near Johnstone Park.

How about Geelong West’s public toilet project that, completed six months late! Scapegoating the sacked councillors was all very convenient.

The elected council consulted ratepayers over development height restrictions and an agreed compromise was struck. Then the council was sacked and the agreement was overruled - so much for democracy!

Anna Michalik (Letters, 7 July) was right about “the awakening of political consciousness”.

People are deeply dissatisfied and want change.

Relief from PTSD The Geelong Clinic has formed a new partnership with WorkSafe, offering their post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) treatment program to first responders.

The 12-week program is helping a local policewoman, who wishes to remain anonymous, suffering from PTSD to understand more about her symptoms.

“When you begin to understand how your brain works, it takes some of the fear out of the PTSD symptoms,” she said.

After years on the frontline as a first responder, the policewoman found herself suffering from sleeplessness, anxiety and a desire to withdraw from friends. She was diagnosed with PTSD. “I felt weak, you feel guilty because you weren’t strong enough. You feel you have let the community down, as well as your colleagues and your family.

Car show laced with musical notes

By Justin Flynn Organisers of Geelong’s second ever Rats Tatts ‘n’ PinUps are confident they can exceed last year’s mammoth crowd.

The 2016 event was held on a bitterly cold day and with decent weather this time around, Kingpin Kuztoms event organiser Rob Bellio said this year’s show could be huge.

“Last year was so successful - we obviously want to build this for the future. We’re assuming this year is going to be bigger,” Mr Bellio said.

“The car park last year was packed, but it was seriously cold,” he said.

Rats, Tatts, and Pin Ups is part car show, part music festival with a little bit of everything thrown in for good measure.

“It really is for everyone - we encourage families to come down,” he said.

“We’ll always have the kids entertainment.

The great thing about our events is that people dress up which adds to the atmosphere. Kids are catered for, and we make provisions to ensure everything is safe. Women love the bands and there’s always something to look for in the trade stands. Last year was an incredible success being an unknown event.”

Show’n’Shine is a car show open to anything pre-’78 (chrome bumper) and there will be some serious motorcycles on shown - ‘the Badder, the Better’ is the policy.

“We’re hoping to get 700 to 800 cars with the right weather,” Mr Bellio said.

The band line-up is impressive.

Four of the five bands are first time appearances for Rats Tatts ‘n’ PinUp’.

Shot In Reno will play from 1pm to 2pm Aaron Schembri Band is on from 2.30pm to 3.30pm, Cadillac Drifters from 4pm to 5pm, The Raccoons from 5.30pm to 6.30pm and Little Billie rounds it all off from 7pm to 8.45pm.

MUSICAL CARS: Last year’s Rats Tatts ’n’ PinUps was a massive success.

Mr Bellio said last year’s event caught many by surprise.

“What we found were that people were in the car park ringing their friends and saying, ‘You’ve got to come down here and check

“The bands are hyped up. It’s something people can relate to, but have never seen before.”

Rats Tatts ’n’ PinUps is at Corio’s Gateway Hotel, from midday to late on 12 August. Entry will

cost a gold coin, with all proceeds go to Beyond Blue.

Music to Afghani

By Mandy Oakham Music not machine guns will be the mantra for a special symphony concert to be held this month at Geelong College.

The concert will feature young Geelong musicians who are hoping to play at the heart strings of audiences with the aim of helping young Afghani musicians.

The local musicians will be part of a charity concert series called from the Con to Kabul involving graduates from the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music which raises money for the Afghan Youth Orchestra.

The concert will be held in the Keith Humble Centre at the college on 19 August at 7pm.

The founder and director of the group, Ellan Lincoln-Hyde, is a proud, seventh generation Geelongian and is a musician.

Ellan first became involved after flicking on the TV and catching a BBC documentary about the Afghani youth orchestra.

“Our first concert was watched by a teenyweeny audience of 15 people and now we are hoping to fill a 250-seat auditorium,” Ellan said.

“From the beginning, we have always asked our audiences to just give what they can, and that way we hope to make the format and the repertoire accessible to the broadest range of people."

Recover with helping hand A physiotherapist for 13 years, Leanne Scown enjoys working with her patients to achieve the best possible outcomes, and keeping them active.

Based at Olympic Park Sports Medicine Centre in Geelong, Leanne is an expert at dealing with persistent spinal pain and pelvic girdle pain.

“I’m happy to be able to be a leading hand on someone’s journey to recovery,” she said.

“Everybody is different, and every person is a different jigsaw puzzle that needs to be put together.”

Leanne has worked in private practice since graduating from The University of Melbourne, and has since completed a Masters of Sports Physiotherapy. Further clinical interests include hip injuries, headache, dance medicine, joint hypermobility syndrome and associated pain conditions, including Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.

Her clinical sporting interests include swimming, running, diving, tennis, triathlon and the performance arts including musicians.

“Being a multidisciplinary clinic, if I don’t have the scope to deal with a person’s problem, there is

always someone at the clinic to help. Essentially, we can put two or three heads together,” Leanne said.

After two years of studying engineering/science, Leanne was drawn towards the field of physiotherapy with an extensive sporting background growing up, and an ongoing love of sport and lifelong sports participation.

Away from work, Leanne is a mum of two boys and stays active through competing in open-water swim events and triathlons.

Refinery’s ‘cleaner’ future The production of the first new solvent at Geelong’s oil refinery since the ’80s has boosted efforts to make the plant viable, according to management.

Viva Energy Australia said Vivasol X55 had application for tyres, automatic transmissions and brakes, adhesives and thinners.

The new product helped fulfil customer demand while highlighting the benefit of retaining traditional manufacturing in Australia, said refinery general manager Thys Heyns.

“Launching a locally reined product, particularly one that we previously imported, is always exciting as the opportunities to do so are few and far between,” said Mr Heyns.

“The Geelong refinery is well-known for manufacturing niche products and the addition of Vivasol X55 to our suite of locally produced products strengthens this position.

“We are the only refinery in Australia producing solvents, bitumen and avgas, which is used for propeller engine planes.

“In order to help ensure the long-term sustainability of the refinery we need to play to our strengths, and specialty products are definitely a strength for Geelong.

“As an industry we need to adapt to changing customer and market conditions and Vivasol X55 is an important demonstration that we can do this.”

The refinery has operated for more than 60 years and provides employment for more than 700 full-time workers.

The workforce injected more than $200 million into the local economy each year, Viva Energy said.

The refinery also produced about half Victoria’s and 10 per cent of Australia’s total fuel needs, the company said.

Viva said Vivasol X55 was the second new product at the refinery since the company took over in 2014.

A history of deadly “run-off “ crashes has prompted the State Government to install 140km of wire rope barrier on the Princes Freeway between Waurn Ponds and north Laverton.

Four people died and 33 were seriously injured in 60 run-off crashes along the strip in the five years to 16 July, the Traffic Accident Commission TAC) said.

The government had so far installed 40km of barrier between Geelong and Melbourne, the TAC said. The entire 73km safety upgrade is expected to be complete by the end of 2018.

The freeway between Melbourne and Geelong carries 106,000 drivers daily.

The government plans to install more than 1500km of wire rope barriers across the state as part of a $1 billion spend to improve safety on “high-risk arterial roads”.

“Everyone makes mistakes on the road but noone should die because of them,” said Road Safety Minister Luke Donnellan, after inspecting the $17.5 million freeway project this week.

The barriers are unlikely to win support among the freeways’ motorcyclists, who have previously labelled them “rider-slicers” and “widow-makers”.

Motorcyclists complain the wires are deadly to riders who lack the protection of a car body if they collide with the barriers.

Cats in do-or-die battle to sew up top four spot

By Justin Flynn Geelong can all but sew up a top four spot if it defeats Sydney tonight at Simonds Stadium.

The Cats are six points clear of fifth-placed Port Adelaide and 10 points adrift of a host of other sides all vying for a finals spot. With Adelaide’s draw to Collingwood last weekend, top spot is also back on the agenda with just a game separating the two teams at the top of the table.

Geelong will have to defeat Sydney tonight without Patrick Dangerfield, who was suspended for one match for a tackle on Carlton big man Matthew Kreuzer.

Coach Chris Scott said he would not expect his side to change the way it tackled, even after the decision by the match review panel to suspend Dangerfield.

“If the alternative is to be a very poor tackling team and be poor in the contest, then I think we are just going to have to risk that players are going to inadvertently cross the boundaries as the rulemakers dictate they are at the moment," Scott said.

Dangerfield is now ineligible to win a second Brownlow Medal this year due to the suspension, and Scott said there was an element of bad luck in the decision.

“Luck, in my experience, almost always plays a factor in these things. Especially when things

aren’t malicious or intentional, then sometimes you can just be on the wrong side of those things," Scott said.

Tonight’s game is the first of a two-week Simonds Stadium blockbuster patch. After the Swans, the Cats take on Richmond in what is tipped to be a full house next Saturday afternoon.

Sydney has won 10 of its past 12 games, which included a narrow loss to Hawthorn last weekend.

Tonight’s game is the first time these sides have met this season. The last encounter was during the 2016 preliminary final, which Sydney won by 37 points.

During that final, the Sydney midfield ran rampant with Isaac Heeney, Dan Hannebery, Kieren Jack and Josh Kennedy playing starring roles.

Kennedy is under an injury cloud for this game after playing his 200th game against the Hawks.

Joel Selwood, Mitch Duncan, Cam Guthrie and Sam Menegola will need to lift to help fill the void left by Dangerfield.

Tom Hawkins returned to form in a huge way last week with six goals against Carlton. Sydney’s defence has been solid this season with Dane Rampe and Heath Grundy dominating in the air.

It’s a brave tipster who goes against Geelong at home. Even without Dangerfield for a week, the Cats should do enough to scrape home in what could be one of the games of the season.

Wild winds sent anglers seeking shelter last week.

Freshwater destinations offered some limited relief, with Stony Creek Reservoir, just outside Anakie, producing brown trout to just on 1kg along with a few redfin.

Spoon-type lures and longer casts worked well from the main rock wall, along with soft plastics allowed to sink to the bottom.

The crater lakes of the western district were a reliable option for Chinook salmon and trout.

Trelly’s Geelong’s Peri Stavropoulos took a run down to Lake Bullen Merri first thing Sunday morning. Trolling slowly, Peri had no trouble in boating Chinook salmon to 1.5kg on a Tilsan Brown Trout minnow lure.

Other anglers at Bullen Merri also found the Chinook salmon willing to take a lightly weighted pilchard fillet.

Across the road at Lake Purrumbete, Tim Beusmans put in a few hours trying to tempt a brown trout. He ended up boating a brown just over 4.5kg on light line.

Saltwater and anglers were limited due to the trying conditions, although casting squid jigs out from St Leonard’s Pier accounted for some reasonable squid in the evenings.

The surf fishing was fantastic, with this season producing large numbers of not just Australian salmon but gummy sharks, too.

Jan Juc proved a safe bet for spinning up salmon. Pilchard-pattern lures around 25g worked well, with salmon over 2kg sometimes beached.

The key to banking numbers of fish was timing trips for evenings lining up with rising tides.

After dark, gummies devoured fresh squid baits along with fresh fillets of salmon.

Huge amounts of salmon to 40cm snapped up soft plastics around Corio Bay’s inner-harbour. Three-inch minnow Gulps worked well on 1/8oz jig heads.

The salmon seemed spread from the entrance to the harbour through to the grammar school lagoon and along Geelong’s waterfront.

Back down the western district, estuary systems had plenty of black bream on the chew. Z-Man Motor Oil Grubz in the 2.5-inch size were a safe bet on schools of bream over 40cm.

Anglers stalking the estuaries should try taking advantage of a depth sounder so they can cast to marked schools.

Next week, if the wind backs off, it should offer chances to try for King George whiting out from St Leonards, while walking the surf beaches on a rising tide with lures should produce a few salmon. Freshwater anglers might like to head west to Lake Purrumbete for a trophy trout, with August often the best month to snag a big brown.

Aussie Rules catching on overseas and at home too Aussie Rules players from South Africa and Fiji will clash in Geelong next week for a 2017 AFL International Cup, organisers have announced.

Geelong won the rights to host one match of the cup, run across venues in Melbourne and regional Victoria from Sunday until 19 August.

Every three years, the cup pits international players against each other, with Australians ineligible to play.

This year’s men’s teams come from Canada, China, Croatia, Fiji, France, Germany, Great Britain, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Japan, Nauru, New Zealand, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, South Africa, Sri Lanka, and USA. 30 GEELONG INDY Friday, 4 August, 2017

Women’s teams will come from Canada, European Crusaders, Fiji, Great Britain, Ireland, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, USA. Geelong will host South Africa and Fiji from 7pm next Friday at St Mary’s Football Club’s Anthony Costa Oval, in Kardinia Park.

AFL Head of Community and International Development, Grant Williams, said the AFL expected the 2017 carnival to be the biggest yet.

“The popularity of Australian Football overseas continues to grow with more players and fans taking up and supporting our game,” he said “Following the success of the AFL International Cup in 2014, we will again conduct a round of

IC17 matches at suburban and country grounds to give participants an authentic Australian Football experience.

“We look forward to welcoming players from North America, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Asia and the Pacific to compete.”

Expatriate Australians were also ineligible to play in the International Cup, the AFL said.

“All teams comprise amateur players who must be nationals of the country they represent.”

Previous winners are Ireland (2002 and 2011), New Zealand (2005), Papua New Guinea (2008), Papua New Guinea (2014 men’s) and Canada (2014 women’s).
