It’s every parent’s worst nightmare - a phonecall from police telling you they’ve got your son. For local mother Sonya Ford, that nightmare recently became a reality. On Tuesday, Ms Ford was horrified to receive a phonecall from police to say that her five-year-old son Jacob had escaped from his Officer kindergarten - unnoticed by staff. Jacob had wandered out of St Clare’s Early Learning Centre on Majestic Drive undetected about 9.30am on 1 August. It is understood Jacob had just been dropped off to kinder for the day by his father. Wanting to “see his dad”, it is believed the five-yearold used a chair to reach the door of the facility, before sneaking out. According to his shocked mother, Jacob was found by passerby Laura Hayson an hour later, more than 2.5km away along the Princes Highway at the Officer weighbridge. Ms Hayson took Jacob to the Pakenham Police Station - much to the surprise of St Clare’s. “The kinder did not notice he was missing until the authorities alerted them," Ms Ford said. She said she never expected to receive a phonecall at work from the police telling her they had her son. She said it was “scary and appalling” the centre didn’t notice Jacob’s absence. “As a parent ... you trust them with the safety of your children,” Ms Ford said. “Much worse could have happened ... he is safe, just shaken up.” The Catholic Diocese of Sale oversees the operation of the kindergarten. Its business manager, Paul Velten said child safety and well-being was something the parish took “very seriously”. “We are extremely thankful and grateful the child is safe,” Mr Velten said. He said the incident had been reported to the Department of Education and said the parish would also conduct its own investigation. “We will certainly undertake our own thorough investigation and look at putting practices in place to ensure it doesn’t happen again,” Mr Velten said. A spokesperson for the Department of Education said it was notified on Tuesday of “a serious incident involving a child from St Clare’s Early Learning Centre.” The spokesperson said the department had commenced an investigation into the matter.

‘Century’ for the Preppies Cardinia’s Foundation (Prep) students celebrated 100 days of school this week by taking part in a string of 100-themed activities. At Pakenham Consolidated School, all students and teachers celebrated the Preps’ 100 days of learning with a huge banner at assembly in the morning, and students paraded around the school wearing crowns, sunglasses and flags that they made themselves. To finish off the festivities, the whole year level threw a party. “Any celebration needs a party!” said Marie Wigzell, the Grade 3 and 4 co-ordinator. At John Henry Primary School, the inaugural Prep class celebrated with a whole school parade and cupcake decorating. The Foundation students were also asked to bring 100 ‘things’ to school, such as 100 buttons or 100 grains of rice. Foundation teacher Claire Van Lambaart said the celebrations were extra exciting “as they are the first group of Foundation students to start school at our brand-new school primary school“.

New school boss named By Bonny Burrows The State Education Minister has announced Kerry Coffey as the inaugural principal of the under construction Gum Scrub Creek Primary School. The Officer school, located on Sandy Road, will form part of an education hub featuring an early years learning centre, after school hours care centre and maternal health services. Ms Coffey joined the Education Minister, James Merlino, during a site visit on 2 August, where she spoke about her vision for the precinct’s future. Ms Coffey, who has an extensive 28year career in education in both teaching and principal positions in south-east Melbourne, said she was excited about her new role. “I had lots of principal experience and was looking for a new challenge,” Ms Coffey said. “This opportunity came up, and ... it just really matched with my vision for education and so I applied and luckily I was successful.” The new school, which will open for term one 2018, is already attracting strong interest. According to Ms Coffey, she had received 100 enrolments in the first week alone. Because of the heavy demand, restrictions have been put in place on who can enrol. “They actually have to show that they’ve built or bought in the area, so sales documents or utility bills, because there’s so much demand,” Ms Coffee said. Depending on enrolment numbers, the school is expected to commence in term one 2018 with between 10 and 15 classrooms and just as many teachers. Along with Ms Coffey, there will also be a business manager, two assistant principals and early years centre staff working under the one room. Mr Merlino said Ms Coffee would do a wonderful job as the inaugural principal. Cardinia Shire Deputy Mayor Jodie Owen said it was important good education began early, and despite community fears, this was something the hub setting would ensure. She pointed to the recent NAPLAN results as an example of an integrated education centre’s importance. “I’ve personally said - and taken some heat from the community, but it’s true - if you don’t get it right at kinder, you’re setting your child up for failure later on,” Cr Owen said. “This is going to be an amazing centre, to have it all in one hub is the way of the future, it’s the way Cardinia will be going and it will be proven in time it’s absolutely the right model. “ The site’s childcare centre will be operated by Early Years Management Services, as announced during the Cardinia Shire kinders tender process.

Planting in progress By Victoria Stone-Meadows Sunday 30 July marked the 21st annual National Tree Day, with about 250 members of the Casey community coming out to revegetate an open space site on Hessell Road in Harkaway. Casey’s Plant Your Roots event saw the planting of 12,000 indigenous plants in just under two hours. Manager of City Planning at Casey Council Nicola Ward said National Tree Day was a great chance for the community of Casey to work together. “Our community planting days not only achieve improved environmental outcomes, but also foster community spirit and pride and help educate the community about the importance of native

vegetation within Casey,“ she said. “The participants were such a diverse mix of ages, faiths and backgrounds, coming together to create an asset for the future Casey community to enjoy. “My hope is that the young people of Casey who were there can bring their own children and grandchildren to the park in the future and share the story about how they planted the trees. “The City of Casey thanks all the individuals, families and community groups who volunteered their time on the day to help council achieve a significant environmental goal and create Casey’s next bushland forest.” Star News photographer Gary Sissons went along to the event in Harkaway to capture the planting in progress.

Corrections staff had assessed Thompson as a medium risk of re-offending due to his previous similar crimes. Thompson was jailed for 90 days followed by an 18-month community corrections order, including mental health and drug treatment.

A 21-year-old Cranbourne man who is known to hang out around the Dandenong and Noble Park areas is missing and police are looking for help to find him. Liam Magri was last seen at a house on Dunferline Crescent in Cranbourne on Sunday 9 July, but has not been seen or heard from since. He was last seen wearing Adidas tracksuit pants, runners, a hoodie and possibly wearing a beanie. Mr Magri is slim to medium in build, about 175 centimetres tall with brown hair and wears piercings in his nose and lower lip. A Narre Warren man has been jailed after claiming an illegal hydroponic crop of 44 cannabis plants with an electrical bypass was solely for his personal use. Michael Thompson, 41, was convicted of trafficking, cultivating cannabis, theft of electricity and being a prohibited person with a loaded pistol, at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 31 July. In sentencing, Jack Vandersteen said Thompson’s criminal history had a “degree of logic”

to it, noting the accused sought pain management for chronic back pain from a workplace injury. However he didn’t accept Thompson’s claims that the plants were for personal use only. The unweighed plants were “healthy”, “bushy” and “stocky” with “a lot of head on them” as was typical of commercially-grown crops, Mr Vandersteen said. Each plant could possibly yield up to 300 grams of cannabis, he said.

The finger-pointing reference as seen in the Berwick News could be interpreted as a reference to “Uncle Sam" of the USA. Used as a marketing tool to recruit soldiers for WW1 and WW2, it disappoints me that Casey councillors would see this as remotely acceptable to portray. Equally of a concern that while some residents do have the right to support national conscription, a question needs to be asked. What community consultation took place to actually gauge real community sentiment? Or again is this just Casey Council punching above their own weight, trying to act once again as the small brother of the Federal Government? I applaud Cr Smith for standing on his own and for showing real conviction questioning this council position. Maybe Cr Rex Flannery and Cr Sam Aziz can both take a leaf out of Cr Smith's stance and stand up for their constituents in the Springfield Ward and say no to the permit apllication that will see the destruction of the Berwick Springs Promenade tree-lined entry. Yes, Springfield Ward councilors YOU can stand up on your own and represent us the community. Maybe the councillors should be photographed with open arms like “Lady Liberty" portraying an image of understanding and listening to community wants. Then act accordingly and in this case save Berwick Springs from a unwarranted and unnecessary development. Michael Ball, Narre Warren South.

Cr Rex Flannery’s recent motion calling for compulsory national service, supported by all Casey councillors, except Cr Wayne Smith, shows precisely where Casey’s problems lie. Crs Rex Flannery, Amanda Stapledon, Rosalie Crestani, and Sam Aziz, clearly know absolutely nothing about Australian history. Neither do they respect public opinion. If they did, they would know that the Australian public resoundingly voted against national service and military conscription during the Great War. But military service was unilaterally imposed by the Federal Government in the Vietnam war, although opposed by the general public, because of the subservience of Australian politicians, once again, to American imperialism. Apart from Cr Wayne Smith, most of Casey’s councillors appear to be absolutely bankrupt for ideas and strategies to take Casey forward and deal with our most important community problems; such as renewable energy, extreme weather events, health and addiction problems, homelessness and underemployment. Rex Flannery has offered no evidence to show that national service will impact on any of these problems or the rising crime statistics in this municipality. Unless Casey residents see better, evidenced-based, decisions from our councillors we are facing a future compromised by the use of scare tactics to provide a cover for local government incompetence! Well done Tom Congratulations to Tom Cummings for his recent stand against poker machines in Casey (see Cam Lucadou-Wells, “Alliance backs pokies fight,15 July, Berwick News).There is no doubt that poker machines and problem gambling are behind the increased crime rate and level of domestic violence in the southern-eastern suburbs. Casey Council and the mayor should now respond by rewarding Tom Cummings for his stand against this social pathology with a Casey Council citizens' certificate of merit. Star reporter Cam Lucadou-Wells should also receive an award for his great report on this issue. Casey Council often awards certificates to commemorate the work of volunteers and business achievements in this municipality. Why now shouldn’t Casey mayor, Sam Aziz, as a mark of respect and support by council, award Tom Cummings a certificate and publicly thank Mr Cummings for his stand against an addiction that compromises the

quality of life for many residents in the city of Casey? It is of interest to note that none of the local Labor Party MPs in Casey have had anything to say on this issue. Probably because the State Government has a conflict of interest as it receives more than $1 billion in revenue each year. This can only mean the Victorian Government is addicted to poker machines. She’s on song The big stage holds no fears for a 14-year-old Narre Warren South singer. Since she was six, Livinia Walden has been performing in large choral concerts annually at Robert Blackwood and Hamer halls with the Australian Girls’ Choir. She took a further step, joining a select 56-strong AGC touring choir in regional Victoria and Tasmania in June and July.

The choir sang live on ABC Central radio in Bendigo, in the scenic Cataract Gorge in Launceston as well as in front of the Tasmanian Governor Kate Warner and an “invite only” audience at the opulent Government House in Hobart. It came after an audition, then an intensive three-day dance and music rehearsal throwing together singers from across the country. “It was a lot of work and a lot of fun,” Livinia said. The power of singing in a

large group, in unison or in parts, is an amazing thing, she says. “It’s a skill that’s so useful. It’s an instrument that you don’t have to carry around with you.” The Kambrya College student has become adept at any style from old-timers, pop to country. It will be a lifelong pursuit, even if she doesn’t know where singing will take her. As for next year, she plans to try out for more AGC national and international tours.

Dim view of the pokies By Cam Lucadou-Wells Opponents against a Zagame’s Berwick proposal for 10 extra poker machines have taken heart from a recent game-changing decision by the state’s gambling regulator. The Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation which will rule on the Berwick Springs hotel submission - refused an application for 20 more machines at Noble Park Football Social Club on 21 July. The outcome delighted the Alliance for Gambling Reform’s Tom Cummings, who noted that many of the venue’s purported economic benefits were “shot down” by the VCGLR. In the past, the commission would have been more persuaded by ‘benefits’ such as extra community contribu-

tions, capital works and jobs, he said. Mr Cummings, of Berwick, thought the alliance mobilised community opposition in this case and several other recent victories, such as a scuttled venue in Whittlesea. “I think what we’re seeing is a lot of community involvement in opposing these sort of applications,” Mr Cummings said. “People are getting motivated and mobilised to put pen to paper, to sign a petition. “There seems to be a groundswell.” In the decision, VCGLR acting chairwoman Helen Versey put “considerable weight” on problem gambling harms in one of the state’s lowest socio-economic areas. Ms Versey also deemed the extra

machines would lead to a “more acute risk of an increase in gambling related crime and social disturbance”. Breakthrough burgers create a storm It’s a small slice of American cuisine making a big impact on the taste buds of Pakenham burger lovers. Specialising in burgers and fried chicken, Burgur restaurant owner Ron Seekal opened his doors on Wednesday 12 July and has since seen a wave of customers storm his store in the search for one of the store’s 30 burgers. The store opened following a year of research and has filled a hole in Pakenham’s dining and take-away scene. “We’d been studying the market in Pakenham since July last year,” Ron said. “It seemed like the right place to come, so we started setting up in February and opened in July. “We’re very happy, the response has been overwhelming. We knew it was going to be big, but not this big.” Having only had their doors open for two weeks, not only have Burgur staff been inundated by hundreds of local burger lovers daily, but the store’s produce suppliers have also had to work to keep up with demand by making several trips to the burger store every day. “The customers never stop coming in the door,” Ron said. “At the moment our suppliers are coming three times a day to keep up with demand and we are still sold out every day.” Among Burgur’s hearty menu is a huge array of beef burgers, chicken and fried chicken burgers as well as veggie burgers with gluten free options available. And with options of loaded fries, nuggets, onion rings, a kids’ menu and a number of mouth-watering shakes, Burgur has something to satisfy every craving.

The newly opened Burgur has been so popular that owner Ron Seekal has been receiving produce deliveries up to three times a day.

Officers from the Environment Protection Authority will be embedded in Casey council’s offices to improve the EPA’s response to pollution and waste issues. Casey is one of 13 Victorian councils to take part in the $4.8 million, pilot program, which stemmed from an independent inquiry into the EPA. The Officers for the Protection of the Local Environment (OPLEs) will work with the council and EPA to tackle small-scale complaints of illegal dumping, litter, noise, dust and odour at industrial sites and businesses. Their work is expected to help EPA’s regular officers respond to larger and more complex pollution reports, EPA southern metro manager Marleen Matthias said. She said EPA’s regular officers would continue to manage dust issues from the O’Grady Road, Hallam site. “The pilot aims to deliver a more localised and faster response to local small-scale waste and pollution issues. “It won’t only be about enforcement, a major focus for the OPLEs will be providing pro-active support and compliance advice to businesses in their regions.” The trial will encourage greater co-operation between the Council and EPA, Ms Mathias said. “EPA will work with the councils to formulate work plans for the officers that meet each municipality’s local needs.” Casey councillor Damien Rosario, in welcoming the move, said it would put “more people on the

Intrusive brother By Cam Lucadou-Wells A man accused of defying an intervention order by breaking into his brother’s Hampton Park home and threatening him with a knife has been refused bail. The man denied the allegations - as well as claims that he was homeless and using methamphetamine - during his in-person bail hearing at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 1 August. “I went to my brother’s to fix things with my parents ... not to make any trouble,” the man told the court. “I swear, I didn’t have a knife.” Days earlier, the man was accused of also demanding to enter his Narre Warren parents’ home and producing a knife while in an apparently drug-affected state. Police claimed the man was an unacceptable

risk on bail due to his “escalating” behaviour and “grave” concerns for community safety. The court was told the man had nowhere to live, used methamphetamine and was likely to go back to the brother’s residence. He was subject to three interim intervention orders, protecting his brother and his parents. The man was accused of breaking in by removing his brother’s bedroom flyscreen on 29 July. The brother said he discovered the accused’s mobile phone cover on his bed. That evening, the man allegedly returned and knocked at the door, saying he hadn’t slept or eaten for five days. The brother, with his two young sons in tow, asked the accused to leave. The accused left and allegedly said: “Call the police. I’m not scared of them.” The accused later returned, standing in the driveway and screaming. His brother put a hand

on his back and again asked him to leave. The accused pushed the brother over and pulled a knife. The brother retreated, grabbed a piece of wood and locked himself in his house, police told the court. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said he needed proof of the man’s claims that he was “living with his missus” and that he worked full-time as a roof tiler. “There’s nothing before the court that suggests the prosecution case is weak. “We’re dealing with a risk of family violence where there are allegations of weapons being produced. “You would need a lot of evidence before the court before I’d consider bailing you.” The man was remanded in custody to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 10 August.

Nan taken for a ride by ice addict thief By Cam Lucadou-Wells A man has pleaded guilty to breaking into his Cranbourne grandmother’s home through the roof and stealing her car. Joshua Neeson, a father of two who had relapsed into methamphetamine issues, had lived with his grandma on and off for the past two years, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court was told on 31 July. He had been arrested that day at Dandenong railway station on an outstanding warrant after not having enough money on his myki card, his lawyer said.

On 6 July, Neeson had taken the Corolla keys from his grandmother’s handbag, stole the garage remote control and took the car for several days, the court heard. When Neeson returned the car about 9pm on 10 July, he refused to tell the victim where he’d been. He went to bed at her home. Neeson later made full admissions to stealing the car and keys to police. On another occasion, his grandmother heard noises in her roof and discovered a ceiling manhole was open. She found Neeson hiding behind the bedroom

door, and called police when Neeson refused to call rehab then and there. On another night, he was discovered by his grandmother in her roof, in breach of his bail curfew at a Cranbourne West residence. Neeson was trying to find a bed due to not wanting to associate with drug users at the bail address, his lawyer said. “He’s made attempts at three different rehabs,” the lawyer said. Neeson was bailed to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court for sentencing on 3 August.

Five caught by cops in pre-dawn raids Five people, including three men from Hampton Park, have been arrested in a series of raids in Melbourne’s South East on Tuesday 1 August. Detectives from the Casey Crime Investigation unit along with members of the Echo Taskforce uncovered drugs and weapons at properties which were raided about 6am. A 24-year-old man from Hampton Park, who is a known associate of the Comancheros Motorcycle Gang, and an 18-year-old woman were arrested in Cranbourne North with drugs and weapons in their possession. Another two Hampton Park men, aged 20 and 21 years old, were also arrested at a different address, with drugs and weapons being seized from that location as well. A third warrant was executed at an address in Carrum Downs, and a 26-year-old man was taken into custody, and is assisting police with their investigation.

Party street brawl Eight police units broke up an out-of-control party in Dandenong and laid armed robbery charges. Greater Dandenong CIU Senior Constable Liam Comrie urged witnesses to the Friday 28 July incident in an abandoned Heatherton Road house. Police received multiple calls from members of the public about fighting in the street and around the house. Officers arrived about 11pm to find upwards of 100 youths flooding the street and “small spot fights” breaking out throughout the crowd. As they dispersed the gathering, a Cranbourne 17-year-old approached police and reported an armed robbery. He said a group approached him with a knife and robbed him of his phone and wallet.

FRANK FACEY CELEBRATES CENTURY IN the early 1900s when Frank Facey opened his real estate business in Dandenong, Berwick was a beautiful country town where weary travellers would stop to refresh their horses before heading out to East Gippsland. We have discussed many elements of buying - where to buy, how to obtain finance, what the impacts are of serviceability and a whole range of topics which are important for all first home buyers to know and understand. This week I want to talk about building. A lot of people get scared by the process but provided you have your eyes wide open you will not expect any surprises and be comfortable with the process. Obviously, I am very familiar with what we do at RMS! What our competitors do I have no clue. But I imagine some processes we have would be shared by others. A lot of disputes between clients and builders occur due to two fundamental and easily fixable reasons: communication and poorly prepared paperwork. As a rule of thumb, most builders aren’t necessarily very good customer service representatives. Most of the experiences people have with building, when it is negative, goes along the lines of “I could never get a hold of them”, “they said they would fix something and they never did” and other various issues on site where a client will ask a question and struggle to get an answer. The way I see it we have an obligation to be as transparent as possible. Whilst it is not important to know every detail of

construction, I believe it is crucial to let clients know as early as possible when there has been an issue on site, and how and when it will be rectified. At RMS we provide our clients with an update each and every Friday or Saturday afternoon (as trades tend to work on the weekend, so the job is always moving). It is important to set a standard in communication, and making clients feel comfortable knowing if they call their builder they will be greeted with a cheerful and attentive person on the other end. Secondly, paperwork is critical to delivering a successful build project. The reason most volume builders do not accommodate design or structural changes is because they cannot quality control the process in their major operations. At small to medium sized builder level it is more easily managed and supervised, making plan changes a little more feasible. However, the best bit of advice I can give when you are discussing your inclusions or build - whether it is with your sales representative or building supervisor, is to record everything on paper! He said / she said banter is no good. As my clients would know, I am exceptionally anal with paperwork! It may take a little time to get to site to make sure everything is correct, but it saves a lot of heartache and hassle later! Dot your I’s and cross your T’s. And then when you have done that do it again before any shovels are turned.

$300,000 - not worth a word By Victoria Stone-Meadows Casey Council has passed without comment a motion that will see the budget for its new website increase by $300,000. The motion was listed on the agenda for the council meeting on Tuesday 1 August, but council agreed to pass the motion with no discussion. In September 2016 council awarded a $274,560 contact to Previous Next Pty Ltd to build a new council website, staff intranet and Bunjil Place website. The total budgeted amount for the project was

originally set at $470,000 but council has now approved a $300,000 increase to the total budgeted amount. Casey Council’s Acting Manager Digital and Data Paul Dow said the contract variation was akin to moving resources within the bounds of the project. “The website redevelopment project will still be delivered on budget and on time, it’s just that the budget distribution for the project is changing,” he said. “While the website development cost has in-

creased to accommodate necessary enhancements and functionality, council has offset the cost by finding savings in other areas of the project.” The new websites being developed for council will aim to allow residents to connect and transact with council on a number of devices, while the intranet is supposed to increase staff efficiency. “Through council’s Customer Focus Strategy and Digital Casey Strategy we’re committed to ensuring our customers are at the centre of everything we do and these new digital products will make it easier for our community to connect and

transact with council,” Mr Dow said. “Our new council website will make it easier for our community to find and understand the information they need and conduct their council transactions online anytime, anywhere and on any device.” “The new Bunjil Place website will attract users to the facility and have functionality to purchase tickets to programs and events.” The variation to the contact will be absorbed by council’s forecast operating budget over the upcoming three financial years.

Cup Day coup in Cranny is off and racing By Garry Howe Cranbourne Turf Club will this year host a meeting on Australia’s most famous race day for the first time in its 150-year history. The club has secured a meeting on Melbourne Cup Day, Tuesday 7 November, and expects to draw a crowd of around 10,000 people through the gates. Chief executive Neil Bainbridge described it as a real coup for Cranbourne. “There are enormous meetings on Cup Day throughout Australia, and it’s fantastic for us to now be among those,” he said. For many years, the racing industry shied away from allowing race meetings to be held within a 200 kilometre radius of Flemington, fearing it would impact on the Cup Day crowds there. But there has been a softening of that attitude of late and - having applied for the past few years - Cranbourne was eventually successful in securing the date.

Tax Time

It cements Cranbourne’s link with Australia’s most famous race, which dates back to the town’s first race meeting in April 1867. The main race of that two-day carnival was won by aged gelding Toryboy, who two years earlier had won the Melbourne Cup. Toryboy had run fifth behind Archer in the first Melbourne Cup of 1961 - the year Cranbourne was officially gazetted as a town - and was sixth to the same horse the following year. He missed the 1863-’64 cups and went out at long odds when he won the 1865 race, earning a fortune for his owner, Prahran draper B.C. Marshall. Mr Bainbridge said there had already been a lot of interest in the Cup Day race meeting, with a lot of hospitality packages already taken up by eager patrons. He said the meeting was a nice fit to an already busy Spring Racing Carnival program for Cranbourne.

The action kicks off on Friday 13 October with the big Pinker Pinker Plate night race meeting, then the TAB Cranbourne Cup meeting on Sunday 15 October. After the Melbourne Cup Day meeting, the focus switches to the popular Tricodes meeting on Saturday 18 November - the only meeting in Australia where three codes race at once - before the club begins to focus on the busy Christmas meeting schedule. This month, the club will hold the Cranbourne Racing Industry Awards on Saturday 19 August, celebrating the achievements of local horses and trainers. The Cranbourne Horse of the Year, Trainer of the Year and Rising Star will be named. The club is also in contention for the honour of Country Racing Victoria Club of the Year, which will be announced on 26 August.

Eagles help Ciara fight the battle By David Nagel History would suggest that having strength in numbers is the best way to win a battle, well if that’s the case then Ciara Nelson is on the way to winning the biggest fight of her life. The affable 17-year-old Beaconsfield netballer has an inoperable brain tumour, deep in the midbrain, which was discovered after a fall in a netball game in June 2016. Ciara’s hopes for survival now rest in the hands of Dr Charles Teo - the Sydneybased world-renowned neurosurgeon and founder of the Cure Brain Cancer Foundation. Ciara is regularly seeing specialists and has scans sent to Dr Teo on at least a threemonthly basis to keep close tabs

on a tumour that is notorious for growing quickly. “The tumour is stable, but Ciara has increased swelling in the brain and there’s not a lot they can do to take away the headaches and nausea,” said Ciara’s mum Colleen. “Until the tumour increases in size, operating is not an option, so we just get on with life in the meantime.” For Ciara, getting on with life means still playing netball for her beloved Eagles, a club that has shown unbelievable support, not just to Ciara, but to her sisters Rylee and Jaime, and to a very appreciative Colleen. “This club means everything to us,” she said. “Others going through simi-

lar situations are nowhere near as fortunate as us, we’re just very lucky to be part of a club environment and it all comes back to that. What a brutal way for a season to end. After finishing on top of the Big V basketball Youth League Division 2 men’s ladder with 20 wins from 22 games in this year’s campaign, the Pakenham Warriors have bowed out in the semi-final stage to Collingwood by the barest of margins, 73-72. Dean leads Gulls home By David Nagel A stunning eight-goal haul from interleague forward Andrew Dean has steered Tooradin to its first single-digit victory in almost three years - a character-building two-point triumph over Doveton at Westernport Oval. The Seagulls twice clawed their way off the canvas in the last term, overcoming a three-goal deficit after 10-minutes and falling behind once again after a strong rally was answered by Doves’ forward Shannon Henwood at the 25-minute mark. Doveton’s best player on the day, Nick Battle, then narrowly missed what would have been a goal-of-the-year contender, before Josh Muling and Jake O’Donnell rushed the ball forward into the Seagulls forward 50. The ball tumbled end-over-end, and Dean leading Doves’ defender Matt Jameson to the ball, picked up cleanly before turning onto his right foot and drilling home the winner from 40 out. Both teams had their chances in the dying minutes, with the Gulls ahead at the final siren. “It was a really good win because we kept on fighting and didn’t give up, even when things didn’t look that good in the

last quarter,” Tooradin captain Adam Galea said. “That’s what we’re trying to promote, having a bit of pride in the jumper and really digging deep to try and breed a winning culture. It’s all about knowing how to win, clubs like Berwick, Cranbourne and Narre Warren just know how to get it done, and it’s a huge part of the game.” Galea was full of praise for Dean, but not just for his goal-kicking exploits. “I think the goals were reward for effort, he deserves it,” Galea said. “With Deany, it’s not just about his lead-ups and his marking, he also applies enormous pressure in the forward line and locks it in.” Dean was a clear best on ground for the winners, while Julian Suarez kicked three and Muling, Nick Lang and O’Donnell had critical touches late in the game. The Seagulls were celebrating the 300th senior game of their clubrecord holder Shona Wells, but the party balloons were soon pricked as the Doves came out blazing. The visitors were outstanding in the first quarter, scoring 18-10, with Rahni Samason (goal shooter) unstoppable, scoring 14 goals alone. Hayley Stewart (centre), Akanisi Seeto (wing defence) and Zali Mifsud (wing attack) were on top through the midcourt, with Mifsud - a VNL player with the Ariels - providing a point of difference in just her fourth game for the season. Dual cab love affair lives By Vani Naidoo, Marque Motoring THE Australian love affair with dualcab utes shows no sign of losing that fresh flush of romance with the vehicle’s ability to service both work and family commitments a major drawcard. The segment is highly competitive filled with all manner of temptations including utes that look like utes but drives like cars (well, almost), utes that have such a premium feel you couldn’t imagine getting it dusty, utes that are better off-road, those that are better on road, utes that can haul heavy trailers, others that would battle with an unbraked trailer, big and small, simple and swish. You get the picture… It is a lucrative market and Holden’s Colorado was not catching the eye. So the Colorado has received a major overhaul, both inside and out, with the entire range from single cab to crew cab and space cab in between, getting a makeover. But is it enough to turn the Colorado from a wallflower to the belle of the ball? We put the dual-cab 4x4 to the test. This Colorado is bolder and brasher than the one it replaces with a more aggressive stance, better form and a complementary new headlight design. It is important to Holden that the Colorado appeals to premium pickup buyers too and has styled it according-

ly. The interior is a reflection of that philosophy too, with the new Colorado presenting a more cohesive design and the fit and finish to match. There is still an abundance of plastic, mind you, just with a softer touch especially at those important touchpoints. The dash itself is simple but effective with the size of the buttons and dials in keeping with the fact that this is a ute and also considerately placed close to reach. The steering wheel has the controls you use most but the feel in the hand is more practicality than premium. The Colorado has never battled with space and this iteration is true to that with plenty of head, leg and wriggle room wherever you sit in the dual-cab ute. The rear pew is flatter than we like but is happy to accommodate three in relative comfort. No air vents back there though which is an annoying oversight. Cabin storage is available but not abundant. The centre console bin, glovebox and deep door pockets are more than useful but the front double cup holders are poorly placed and whatever happened to the retracting cup holders that were fitted just under the air vents? Remote start, 18-inch alloys and auto headlights and wipers are among the standard fare as well as a reversing

MyLink system is intuitive and easy to use with a good graphics package. The screen is a bit fuzzy at night though which also affects the picture shown by the reverse camera. There is only one engine available across the range - a lusty four-cylinder 2.8-litre turbo-diesel paired with a six-speed manual transmission or sixspeed automatic for $2200 more. The combination produces 147kW of power and 440Nm of torque in the manual version and 500Nm in the auto. That most of that torque is available from 2000rpm is one of the reasons the Colorado has the oomph needed when overtaking or hauling a load, even up a steep climb. Five star safety comes courtesy of, amongst others, seven airbags, traction and stability control, trailer sway control and hill-start assist. The LTZ also has forward collision alert, tyre pressure monitoring and lane departure warning to help you negate the perils of modern-day driving attitudes.
