Cranbourne, beneath the surface By Victoria Stone-Meadows This year has been an exciting one so far for Cranbourne with many new businesses coming to the area, interesting events on the horizon and so many reasons to love where you live. June saw the official opening of Highview Accounting’s new Codrington Street office complex. Having moved just around the corner from the firm’s old office into a brand-new carbon neutral building, the team at Highview can continue to offer top-notch financial services to Cranbourne in a new and comfortable setting. A morning tea, which raised almost $1500 for the Cancer Council, marked the occasion with Highview director Silvio Marinelli saying that even though the firm also had offices in Mornington and Prahran, Cranbourne would remain the central head office. “We like promoting the City of Casey as a fantastic place to do business,” he said. May this year also saw the announcement of a new nightspot being brought to the area, with veteran publican Paul White converting a church in Cranbourne to a live music venue and pub. Mr White has 25 years’ experience in the pub business, bringing energy to his venues that have made them successful in tourist hotspots such as Mt Hotham, Dinner Plain and the Mornington Peninsula. “We are going through the last processes now and we identified Cranbourne as the ideal location because the existing market at the moment is just gaming driven,” Mr White said. Even as early as this month we had an update of the plans of a new cinema and entertainment precinct in Cranbourne, with Ian Macklin of TM Design Group re-establishing his support for the project. “It is still ongoing and the permit is going through council and DELWP approval processes,” he said. “We are waiting on another report in relation

to trees and vegetation on the site but we hope that will be in, in about another week or two.” “Everyone wants it, everyone needs it and it’s going to be good for Cranbourne, if commonsense prevails.” Mr Macklin said he wanted the project to move forward to bring new employment opportunities to the area. “If this development doesn’t go ahead, there are least 40 people who are not going to have a

job out if it,” he said. Even governments have pitched in help Cranbourne become more successful, with millions of dollars worth of infrastructure being poured into the Thompsons Road upgrades. A total of $175 million is being spent by the State Government to duplicate Thompsons Road, remove the level train crossing near Merinda Park Train Station, and provide new paths and streetlighting for cyclists and pedestrians. With more exciting developments in infrastructure, business and community on the horizon, Cranbourne is a city with so much more than meets the eye.

I have seen it grow and I have been given the privilege of representing Cranbourne for eight years, both as a councillor and as mayor. Our greatest strength is our people. Kids keen on helping out Year 12 students from St Peter’s College, along with teacher, Caroline Angus and college religious education leader, Stephen Nash, are heading to the Solomon Islands later this year to participate in the college’s annual Immersion Program. As part of their commitment to the program, students and staff have undertaken to raise much-needed funds for the Bishop Epalle Catholic School in Honiara, Solomon Islands. Their aim over the next few years is to build a library, IT centre and staffrooms at the school. Principal Chris Black said students would also assist the school by helping out in primary classes and undertaking maintenance work in and around the school buildings. “Our students can put into practice all they have learnt and been exposed to in their time at St Peter’s College about the importance of social justice, and how individuals can make a real impact when they come together with a common cause," Mr Black said. “We are all extremely proud of these students - it would be

easy to go with the crowd and celebrate the end of their secondary education with schoolies weeks trips, but they have chosen a better option in our view." Year 12 student Emily was inspired by a video she saw when she was in Year 7. “I have been eagerly waiting until this year so that I could participate. I am very excited about my participation and trip,” Emily said. The students are paying for their own trip expenses and will leave the day after their final Year 12 exams are completed. Once in Honiara, they will be billeted with a local family and spend their days at the school helping with numerous tasks and immersing themselves in the school and local community. “The trip will further cement the many lessons they have learnt in their time at St Peter’s College in regards to their responsibility in relation to not only their education, faith and service but how they individually or as a small group can have a very real and positive impact in the greater community," Mr Black said.

St Peter's students Henry, Emily and Raphael are heading to the Solomon Islands at the end of their Year 12 studies. Students are currently sourcing and accepting donations of goods and services from local businesses and individuals for a fund-raising silent auction in August. Botanists flock to flora By Victoria Stone-Meadows Cranbourne Gardens, along with the Melbourne Botanic Gardens, will play host to hundreds of international delegates when Melbourne hosts the 2021 International Botanic Gardens Congress. The news was announced when Cranbourne Garden’s own executive director Chris Russell attended the sixth annual congress in Geneva this year. Gardens Victoria director and chief executive, Professor Tim Entwisle, said the congress would be a great time to put Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria on the world stage. “We are very much looking forward to welcoming the global botanic gardens community to Melbourne and to showcase our magnificent city to the world at the seventh Global Botanic Gardens Congress,” he said. “The year 2021 will be an auspicious one for Melbourne Gardens, as we will be celebrating our 175th anniversary.” The proposed theme for the congress is ‘Botanic gardens as provocation’. Events will have a strong emphasis on botanic gardens responding to climate change and urbanisation, while respecting the needs and aspirations of our first peoples. While the centre’s education structure is in line with the framework of a Government Approved Kindergarten program, Community Kids Cranbourne also provide students with real world experiences as well as offering numerous activities to make learning fun. “We offer activities such as Jumparoo dance and movement programs once a fortnight, have excursions to Willow Wood Retirement Village and local schools, as well as engaging students with natural resources, equipment and materials,” Ms Kostiuk said. Community Kids Cranbourne is open from 6.30am to 6.30pm, weekdays and cares for children aged six weeks to six years. For community convenience, the centre provides a courtesy bus service, once-a-month doctor visit, nappies and nutritious meals for morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea. Council butts out By Cam Lucadou-Wells and Victoria Stone-Meadows In a heated debate, Casey councillors have voted down a plan to advocate against marriage equality, with mayor Sam Aziz declaring the council would no longer be distracted by federal matters. Two weeks after a heavily-criticised motion on national conscription, councillors largely abstained from Cr Rosalie Crestani’s push for the council to support a “huge silent majority”. At the 1 August meeting, Cr Crestani particularly lashed out at the abstaining Cr Rex Flannery, accusing him of reneging on his support for her motion. While explaining his position to the meeting, Cr Flannery said he had earlier told Cr Crestani that if samesex marriage was allowed, “we would probably have to tear up the Bible”. “I unfortunately don’t have a Bible,” he told the meeting. At that point, Cr Crestani interjected and was urged to take her seat as she handed Cr Flannery her Bible. Cr Flannery said he himself was “torn” over the issue. The council also voted down a push for Casey to direct a 700-strong residents’ petition on the same issue to every federal MP in the country. Councillors supported an alternative motion to write to the head petitioner to suggest the petition ought to be sent directly to the federal government without the council’s involvement. Cr Crestani said the timing of the motion was a “gift” given changes to the Marriage Act could be voted upon in Canberra as soon as next week. It was vital to protect one of the most “sacred covenants in human history” that was handed down by God

whenever the council ventured into state and federal matters. “There are some things that are just priceless. “Money doesn’t matter if you don’t have a healthy society.” Most councillors however seemed to agree with Cr Gary Rowe that the council should “stick to its knitting”.

“I think this is going one step too far. “We need to stick to those things that local government is very good at that is rates, roads and rubbish.” Mayor Aziz said he was concerned with the “pattern” of exciting media interest in “a divisive debate on a peripheral issue” to the council. He said in hindsight the conscrip-

tion motion a fortnight earlier was a mistake, condemning Casey to much criticism across the nation. Cr Aziz asked what would be next a letter to NASA to settle on Mars, or to the UN Security Council on what to do about North Korea? “I want to put a line under this debate.” Cr Wayne Smith said councillors couldn’t claim to know the majority position of their constituents. According to his own Facebook survey, people on both sides of the debate unanimously thought Casey’s intervention was inappropriate, Cr Smith said. “Every one of them agreed they didn’t vote in councillors to have a position on this.” Cr Smith also said council having an official position on marriage equality would cause undue stress and division within the Casey community. “Us writing a letter is not going to have one iota of effect,” he said. “No matter what decision we make we are going to alienate a section of the community; we have got a huge LGBTIQ community and if this went though they will feel much worse and it will cause a lot of angst for the pro Marriage Act people too.” “My view is why set up division when there doesn’t need to be? Especially when it is not going to have any effect on the level where it matters.” This is not the first time Cr Crestani has attracted controversy with her views on LGBTIQ issues. In 2014 she staged an unsuccessful attempt to have any council support for LGBTIQ people shut down and just last month led a successful charge against the State Government's ‘building respectful relationships’ and ‘safe schools’ programs.

Cup Day coup for Cranny By Garry Howe Cranbourne Turf Club will this year host a meeting on Australia’s most famous race day for the first time in its 150-year history. The club has secured a meeting on Melbourne Cup Day, Tuesday 7 November, and expects to draw a crowd of around 10,000 people through the gates. Chief executive Neil Bainbridge described it as a real coup for Cranbourne. “There are enormous meetings on Cup Day throughout Australia, and it’s fantastic for us to now be among those,” he said. For many years, the racing industry shied away from allowing race meetings to be held within a 200 kilometre radius of Flemington, fearing it would impact on the Cup Day crowds there. But there has been a softening of that attitude of late and - having applied for the past few years - Cranbourne was

eventually successful in securing the date. It cements Cranbourne’s link with Australia’s most famous race, which dates back to the town’s first race meeting in April 1867. The main race of that two-day carnival was won by aged gelding Toryboy, who two years earlier had won the Melbourne Cup. Toryboy had run fifth behind Archer in the first Melbourne Cup of 1961 - the year Cranbourne was officially gazetted as a town - and was sixth to the same horse the following year. He missed the 1863-’64 cups and went out at long odds when he won the 1865 race, earning a fortune for his owner, Prahran draper B.C. Marshall. Mr Bainbridge said there had already been a lot of interest in the Cup Day race meeting, with a lot of hospitality packages already taken up by eager patrons. He said the meeting was a nice fit to an already busy Spring Racing Carnival

program for Cranbourne. The action kicks off on Friday 13 October with the big Pinker Pinker Plate night race meeting, then the TAB Cranbourne Cup meeting on Sunday 15 October. After the Melbourne Cup Day meeting, the focus switches to the popular Tricodes meeting on Saturday 18 November - the only meeting in Australia where three codes race at once - before the club begins to focus on the busy Christmas meeting schedule. This month, the club will hold the Cranbourne Racing Industry Awards on Saturday 19 August, celebrating the achievements of local horses and trainers. The Cranbourne Horse of the Year, Trainer of the Year and Rising Star will be named. The club is also in contention for the honour of Country Racing Victoria Club of the Year, which will be announced on 26 August.

A 21-year-old Cranbourne man who is known to hang out around the Dandenong and Noble Park areas is missing and police are looking for help to find him. Liam Magri was last seen at a house on Dunferline Crescent in Cranbourne on Sunday 9 July, but has not been seen or heard from since. Planting in progress Sunday 30 July marked the 21st annual National Tree Day, with about 250 members of the Casey community coming out to revegetate an open space site on Hessell Road in Harkaway. Casey’s Plant Your Roots event saw the planting of 12,000 indigenous plants in just under two hours. Manager of City Planning at Casey Council Nicola Ward said National Tree Day was a great chance for the community of Casey to work together. “Our community planting days not only achieve improved environmental outcomes, but also foster community spirit and pride and help educate the community about the importance of native

By Casey Neill Eight police units broke up an out-of-control party in Dandenong and laid armed robbery charges. Greater Dandenong CIU Senior Constable Liam Comrie urged witnesses to the Friday 28 July incident in an abandoned Heatherton Road house. Police received multiple calls from members of the public about fighting in the street and around the house. Officers arrived about 11pm to find upwards of 100 youths flooding the street and “small spot fights” breaking out throughout the crowd. As they dispersed the gathering, a Cranbourne 17-year-old approached police and reported an armed robbery. He said a group approached him with a knife and robbed him of his phone and wallet. Police arrested a Springvale 18-year-old and charged him with armed robbery over the incident. It’s alleged that more armed thieves were involved and that there were more victims, but Sen Const Comrie said no one else had come forward. He urged anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Casey ARC has been giving the Casey community fun aquatic experiences for 16 years and was in dire need of some sprucing up. Residents will now be able to enjoy upgraded equipment, re-tiled pools, a new sauna, new pool lights and a new merchandise area. Opinion Uncle Sam? The finger-pointing reference as seen in the Berwick News could be interpreted as a reference to “Uncle Sam" of the USA. Used as a marketing tool to recruit soldiers for WW1 and WW2, it disappoints me that Casey councillors would see this as remotely acceptable to portray. Equally of a concern that while some residents do have the right to support national conscription, a question needs to be asked. What community consultation took place to actually gauge real community sentiment? Or again is this just Casey Council punching above their own weight, trying to act once again as the small brother of the Federal Government? I applaud Cr Smith for standing on his own and for showing real conviction questioning this council position. Maybe Cr Rex Flannery and Cr Sam Aziz can both take a leaf out of Cr Smith's stance and stand up for their constituents in the Springfield Ward and say no to the permit apllication that will see the destruction of the Berwick Springs Promenade tree-lined entry. Yes, Springfield Ward councilors YOU can stand up on your own and represent us the community. Maybe the councillors should be photographed with open arms like “Lady Liberty" portraying an image of understanding and listening to community wants. Neither do they respect public opinion. If they did, they would know that the Australian public resoundingly voted against national service and military conscription during the Great War. But military service was unilaterally imposed by the Federal Government in the Vietnam war, although opposed by the general public, because of the subservience of Australian politicians, once again, to American imperialism. Youngsters in command By Victoria Stone-Meadows The newest Casey Youth Action Committee (CYAC) has been announced, with 24 young residents taking on the issues that affect the wider community. Council held a ceremony at the City of Casey Civic Centre on Monday 31 July to welcome the members onto the committee. The CYAC allows young people in the Casey community a say in what matters to them and helps to direct and inform council policy. Members will take the lead role in identifying issues of importance and developing relevant strategies for the 12 months they serve on the committee.

City of Casey Mayor Sam Aziz presented the 2017-'18 CYAC members with their badges and congratulated them on their appointment. “You should each feel incredibly proud tonight,” he said. “Your leadership, passion and insight are highly valued and council is looking forward to working with you all.” Cr Aziz said being part of CYAC allowed young people a chance to develop critical skills and gain knowledge that would help them in the future. “We hope that the CYAC will empower you to take your place in the community,” he said at the ceremony. “Through the committee, council seeks to develop your

Five netted in pre-dawn swoop Five people, including three men from Hampton Park, have been arrested in a series of raids in Melbourne’s South East on Tuesday 1 August. Detectives from the Casey Crime Investigation unit along with members of the Echo Taskforce uncovered drugs and

weapons at properties which were raided about 6am. A 24-year-old man from Hampton Park, who is a known associate of the Comancheros Motorcycle Gang, and an 18-year-old woman were arrested in Cranbourne North with drugs and weapons in their possession. Another two Hampton Park

men, aged 20 and 21 years old, were also arrested at a different address, with drugs and weapons being seized from that location as well. A third warrant was executed at an address in Carrum Downs, and a 26-year-old man was taken into custody, and is assisting police with their investigation.

Happy hackers go digital By Victoria Stone-Meadows For the first time ever, the City of Casey hosted a GovHack event to allow computer savvy types from far and wide an opportunity to design innovative digital solutions. The event ran for 46 hours over the weekend starting on Friday, 28 July where teams identified problems, built working prototypes and published their source as an open code. Entrepreneurs, IT specialists and anyone with a general interest in data were encouraged to participate in the event, which took place across Australia and New Zealand. Projects included web, mobile or augmented reality applications, new analysis or 3D printed visualisations to understand data and patterns. GovHack has inspired governments across Australia to improve how they deliver their data, to make it easier for the public to understand how governments use revenues, and to focus more attention on delivering citizen-centric services.

She said having the chance to dance with so many other people had inspired her to try new things and work on dance techniques she hadn’t considered before. “I started dancing about five years ago at 12 years old, and have always done classes at a studio and do about 13 and a half hours a week there,” she said. Year 11 Hampton Park Secondary College student Silao Stanzlauz has also landed a principal vocalist role in his first year at the spectacular. “I didn’t even know about spec until I auditioned and got in, and it’s really great,” he said. “I have never met other singers that are really good; they are so good and so fun to be around.” At just 13 years old, Ashley Lucey-Jannert is performing in

her fifth state schools spectacular as an ensemble vocalist, and said she kept coming back every year because she got so much out of the experience. “The last few years being at spec has helped me develop more on my singing side, I think some days I favour dancing but other days I feel like it’s singing, I want to do,” she said. “I keep surprising myself with what I can do and I want to keep going to Year 12, and my aim is to get to principal vocalist.” The 2017 State Schools Spectacular will have a 64-piece orchestra, 30 lead vocalists, 16 principal dancers, and 20 ensemble dancers. The performance will be on Saturday 16 September at Hisense Arena with tickets available through Ticketek.

The 2017 State Schools Spectacular is back this September, with 3000 students from primary and secondary schools all over Victoria taking part in the massive performance. Among them, many are from the Casey region, and are involved in the all-singing all-dancing performance titled, Anything is Possible. A few of the Casey students participating in the spectacular for the first time said through the countless rehearsals to date they had already learnt so much. In his very first performance, Joseph Stewart, a Year 11 Cranbourne Secondary College student, will be a principal vocalist. He said he was nervous about performing in front of a large crowd, but the skills and knowledge he accrued had all been worth it. “Honestly, it is nerve-wracking,” he said. “It’s our first big performance in one of Melbourne’s biggest arenas, but at the same time it’s an amazing experience in music and us being able to perform our passions.” Fifteen-year-old Joseph said he had always had an interest in singing, and had found the State Schools Spectacular had given him a lot of valuable training. “Music and singing has been my passion since I was three,” he said. Bonnie Ramsey is also in Year 11 at Cranbourne Secondary, and is an ensemble dancer in the 2017

couraged to take on a firefighting role. “The more facilities we can provide for females, we hope, is going to encourage them to join up,” he said. “We want give them that privacy and make sure everyone in the station is as comfortable as possible.” The grants announced by Mr Perera also include $3944 for the Clyde CFA to purchase durable hoses. Cranbourne CFA is planning to have the upgrades to their station underway in the upcoming few months.

Cranbourne CFA has received funding from the State Government to upgrade the station on Arundel Street to better accommodate the growing members of the brigade. Cranbourne MP Jude Perera announced on Monday 24 July that the Cranbourne CFA brigade would be receiving $68,664 to go towards muchneeded station upgrades. Mr Perera said the money would allow the CFA to better serve the Cranbourne community. “This is an exciting day for our local area; and I congratulate all our grant recipients and hope that it assist them the outstanding job they do in keeping the community safe,” he said. “I encourage all volunteer brigades and units in our local area to visit the Emergency Management Victoria website and apply for a grant.” Currently, the integrated CFA station at Cranbourne has volunteer uniforms stored in the shed between the trucks and no area specific for female firefighters. Over the last 18 months, the Cranbourne CFA has been forced to store turnout gear in the main shed and in a disused shower room. Cranbourne CFA volunteer Lieutenant Dennis Latchford said the money would go towards upgrading the station to be able to store everyone’s turnout gear in the same space and provide an area for female firefighters’ privacy.

GUIDE MAT SUCKLING DIRECTOR OF RMS HOMES We have discussed many elements of buying - where to buy, how to obtain finance, what the impacts are of serviceability and a whole range of topics which are important for all first home buyers to know and understand. This week I want to talk about building. A lot of people get scared by the process but provided you have your eyes wide open you will not expect any surprises and be comfortable with the process. Obviously, I am very familiar with what we do at RMS! What our competitors do I have no clue. But I imagine some processes we have would be shared by others. A lot of disputes between clients and builders occur due to two fundamental and easily fixable reasons: communication and poorly prepared paperwork. As a rule of thumb, most builders aren’t necessarily very good customer service representatives. Most of the experiences people have with building, when it is negative, goes along the lines of “I could never get a hold of them”, “they said they would fix something and they never did” and other various issues on site where a client will ask a question and struggle to get an answer. The way I see it we have an obligation to be as transparent as possible. Whilst it

is not important to know every detail of construction, I believe it is crucial to let clients know as early as possible when there has been an issue on site, and how and when it will be rectified. At RMS we provide our clients with an update each and every Friday or Saturday afternoon (as trades tend to work on the weekend, so the job is always moving). It is important to set a standard in communication, and making clients feel comfortable knowing if they call their builder they will be greeted with a cheerful and attentive person on the other end. Secondly, paperwork is critical to delivering a successful build project. The reason most volume builders do not accommodate design or structural changes is because they cannot quality control the process in their major operations. At small to medium sized builder level it is more easily managed and supervised, making plan changes a little more feasible. However, the best bit of advice I can give when you are discussing your inclusions or build - whether it is with your sales representative or building supervisor, is to record everything on paper! He said / she said banter is no good. As my clients would know, I am exceptionally anal with paperwork! It may take a little time to get to site to make sure everything is correct, but it saves a lot of heartache and hassle later! Dot your I’s and cross your T’s. And then when you have done that do it again before any shovels are turned.

Kids helping out By Victoria Stone-Meadows Students at Lyndhurst Secondary College have been learning about social responsibility by visiting local community groups and organisations. Year 7 students at the school visited Lynbrook Kindergarten on Friday 21 July to engage with students and gain an understanding of early childhood education. The high school students read books,

played games and worked with the educators to support and learn with the young children who attend the kindergarten. The project organiser at Lyndhurst Secondary College, Sue Carroll, has organised nine more visits to groups and organisations in the community including Lifeview Willow Wood Retirement Village and at MSFIN (Mums Supporting Families In Need).

“These positive community engagement activities are providing rich and meaningful learning for the students by giving them a real appreciation of life in the wider community,” Ms Carroll said. The school plans to continue creating more community partnerships into the future to foster life skills in the students and enrich their education with real life learning experiences.

Brothers are revving it up By Nick Creely Finding a more determined and competitive pair of brothers than Beaconsfield’s Tom and Brad Bramich would be a fruitless exercise. Tom, 20, and Brad, 16, are continuing to take the motorsport world by storm, and both are destined to be household names in the coming years. In the current Australian Superbike Championships, Tom currently leads the country in the Supersport 300 category with a total of 187.5 points, while Brad sits seven spots down in eighth spot with 137.5 points. Tom - sitting comfortably in the lead, has competed around the world, something that is holding him in good stead during the middle of a gruelling season. “I had a ride at the British Superbike Championship (BSB) which is the strongest domestic competition in the world, and then since then I’ve been riding in an R3 in the Supersport 300 category,” he explained. “My plan is just to finish off the season really well and continue to improve.” Tom’s preparation to race requires a lot of dedication, resilience and knowledge of the bike he rides, something he relishes each and every day. But it’s all for one purpose, to race overseas in the world’s most prestigious tracks. “After every race meeting, the biggest preparation is the bikes - we have to strip them down, we clean them and do the maintenance, and I just try to keep overall really fit - not a day goes by that you don’t do something in regards to racing,” he said. “I really want to race in Europe at the World Championships, not just for the racing but for the experience of it all - I feel like we’re doing all the right things and we’ve got good people around me, so I feel it’s possible. “I’ve been racing for six years so I probably have more experience than the other competitors and I’m really consistent - I’m not the fastest all the

Only four years younger than Tom, his approach to the 2017 season is slightly different. “This year is my learning year for next year, because I will ride the Yamaha R3 in the Supersport 300 Class at ASBK and hopefully win the title, so I’m learning the tracks and the bike and next year hopefully be at the front and get on the podium,” he said. His inspiration to ride came from both Tom and his father only three years ago, and has now become ob-

sessed with the sport.. “My dad used to race back in the day, but he stopped because he couldn’t afford it, and Tom got into it and I just loved it and started riding in 2014,” he said. “I love the speed and how you have to think about how you’re going to pass your opponent - it’s tough to be successful because it’s so expensive, you need to obviously have really good social skills and that to get sponsors to help you out.” But just who is the better rider in their eyes? “I am definitely better than Tom,” Brad said with a chuckle. “The MotoGP is the World Cham-

Tom Bramich. pionship and that’s where I want to be but I’d like to get to the top of Australia before anyone else. “Hopefully I beat Tom to it - he’s obviously 20-years-old now and hopefully it doesn’t take me that long.” But does Tom agree? “I’d hate to see Brad beat me, but he’s doing really, really well,” he said. “He’s probably faster than what I

was at his age, so he’s doing a really good job.” The Bramich’s rise up the charts of the motorsporting world in Australia has been aided by the support of local businesses. “I’d like to thank Boardpro in Pakenham, Whinner Motorcycles in Narre Warren and Nelsigns in Narre Warren for their ongoing support,” Tom said.

Shona’s a star - but with a ton of modesty to boot By David Nagel Her answer to a very simple question sums up the remarkable career of Shona Wells - the Tooradin-Dalmore club-record holder who celebrated her 300th senior game on Saturday. “How many premierships and best and fairests have you won Shona?” we asked. “I’m not sure; I’m not very good at remembering that type of thing,” she replied. The 37-year-old is much more comfortable talking about her journey at her home club, a rewarding one that, yes, has netted premierships and best and fairests along the way, but more importantly to Shona has been the breeding ground for friendships that will last a lifetime. Shona, her sister Julia, and her late brother Adam became locals in the mid-1980s and quickly found a home

away from home at the sporting club. “We moved to the area when I was about six or seven and I started playing for Tooradin in the Under 13s,” Shona said. “It was a real family affair back then, my sister also played netball and my brother played footy and our parents got involved as well. “It’s the friendships that keep me coming back, I never would have thought when I started that I would have met such great people that have become lifelong friends - that’s what it’s all about to me. People like Kate Gillespie, Loretta Iverach, Carla Henriksen, my sister Julia, that’s the core group that’s been there all the way through the journey.” Shona, who was schooled locally and still lives in Tooradin, said it was amazing to think that no one had played more games than her in the 64year history of the club.

“It’s pretty amazing when you think about it, to play that many games with the one club is something I’m very proud of,” she said, before saying a few thank yous. “Michelle Barnes was my coach back then and she believed in me and made me believe that I was good enough to play A Grade. The girls I mentioned earlier have also been amazing and Noela Maxwell, she’s our oldest living life member and was part of the original club, she’s been a huge inspiration as well.” Shona, who rates Beaconsfield star Jasmine Maddocks (now Jones) and Pakenham livewire Meaghan Atkins (now Winter) as her toughest opponents, rates her dedication and work ethic as her greatest strengths. “I know I’m not as talented as some other A Grade players out there so I’ve just had to work hard and be more of a thinking player,” she said, before giv-

ing advice to the juniors, including her seven-year-old daughter Eva. “My message to the young ones coming through would be to work hard, be loyal, and just enjoy it, because at the end of the day that’s what brings you back.” The Seagulls currently sit second on the ladder and look well-poised to add an A Grade premiership to their most recent success in 2006. Shona, a big part of that team, missed the grand final to attend a friend’s wedding. “The better you are as a team the more pressure there is, but I would much rather have that than no success at all,” Shona said. “But even through the lean times there’s always been a really good feel around the club. Serong among the finest By Nick Creely TAC CUP REVIEW - ROUND 14 A stunning TAC Cup debut to Warragul’s Caleb Serong has inspired the Gippsland Power to a season defining two-point victory over the Dandenong Stingrays on Saturday. Wild winds lashed bayside Frankston on the weekend, with Serong (three goals) playing an inspiring role up forward in a performance laced with class. Just 16-years-old, Serong looked a class above throughout the game, and combined with his fellow debutants in Brock Smith and Sam Flanders, gave the Power a flair that upstaged their more highly fancied opponents. With a five-goal breeze to the City End, the Power couldn’t quite capitalise in the first quarter, kicking seven behinds to hold just a narrow six-point quarter time lead. An increase in pressure in the second quarter, combined with a lift from Stingray midfielders Hunter Clark and Will Hamill, saw the ‘Rays surge with the wind, kicking six-goals to take a 13-point half time lead. Injuries began to mount for both sides in what started to become a bruising affair, and in a fairly innocuous incident on the wing, Power wingman Matt McGannon broke his ankle in a bitter blow for the visitors. But a pair of Serong goals in the third quarter seemed to inspire the under-siege Power, but despite having all the play in the third, could only gain a margin under two-goals with a quarter to play against the wind. two on the bench, allowed the Power the perfect start, with Austin Hodge and Nick Hogan slotting clutch goals to take the lead out to an ominous 22-points. A flurry of goals by the Stingrays late in the final term courtesy of some daring ball movement, especially from rangy half-back Mason De Wit, meant it was game on, with Riley D’Arcy (three goals), Clark (two goals) and Jai Nanscawen (two goals) looking dangerous in attack. But sticking to script, Serong took the match-winning contested mark on the wing after a clearing kick from defence with just seconds to play, with the healthy Power crowd erupting in delight. Gippsland coach Leigh Brown was delighted with the win, a result that means they remain in eighth spot with just four rounds to play. “It’s a really good win, and fantastic to be on the right side of a close game for once - to win a tight one is really pleasing,” Brown said. “Overall it was a great team effort there were some tough conditions with

Using his vision in the stoppages and his incredible burst on the outside, Clark threatened to take the game away from the Power in a masterclass fourth quarter from the 18-year-old. Berwick defender Will Arthurson made his debut for the ‘Rays, and impressed with his composure down back. The loss did nothing to the Stingrays’ pursuit of a top four spot, with only percentage keeping them out. The Power returns to Morwell on Saturday to face the Geelong Falcons, while the Stingrays host Bendigo at Shepley Oval.

De Koning has been a strong presence up forward and in the ruck for the ‘Rays this year, with his height and agility a major strength. In total, there are 83 young-

sters from around the country chosen in the Draft Combine, with 54 of those players coming from both Vic Country and Vic Metro squads. The combine is set to test the players both physically mentally over the four day event, with AFL recruiters in the stands scrutinizing their every move. Many skills tests, including the beep test, clean hands test, 30m repeat sprints and 3km time trial have been scrapped, with AFL clubs being given more allocated time to interview the youngsters and perform medical screenings.

Inspirational Dandenong Stingray youngster Aiden Bonar is among five ‘Rays selected to take part in the 2017 AFL Draft Combine. The 18-year-old has endured the cruel side of football in recent years, with two successive serious knee injuries hindering his impressive development. But after going through the rigours of rehabilitation once again, Bonar has played just the one match this season among only a couple in the last two years - but that was already enough for recruiters to sit up and take notice of his immense talent. Fittingly, against Northern Knights just two weeks ago in his return match after almost two years, Bonar kicked the opening goal of the match in a strong five-goal victory. Stakes are high for the Demonic By Nick Creely Sunday’s match between Casey Demons and Coburg down at Casey Fields certainly wasn’t one to remember. It was a game full of sloppy ball use, scrappy passages of play and extraordinary turnovers. Yet it was a result so critically important in Casey’s quest to make the finals that all of that can be overlooked. In the eventual 43-point win, talent overshone in the end, with the Demons maintaining their unbeaten run at home in 2017 and also holding onto seventh spot on the VFL ladder. In windy conditions down at Cranbourne, both sides struggled to adjust to the conditions in the first quarter, with only the Burgers managing to score a goal through some handy work from the talented Hisham Kerbatieh at the 25-minute mark. It took until the middle of the second term for the Demons to finally score their first major of the game, with AFL-listed forward Cam Pedersen kicking truly. Taking a narrow lead into half time, the Demons and Burgers once again struggled in the third quarter, before Dion Johnstone gave the home side the spark they needed with a vital goal late in the term to kick-start a stunning last quarter run. VICTORIAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE WOMEN’S REVIEW - ROUND 10 Box Hill has managed to avenge their early season loss to Cranbourne at home, turning the tables on the Eagles to win by 20-points at Frenken Homes Oval on Sunday. It was back in Round 4 down that the Eagles claimed their first win of the season against the Hawks by 13-points, and they aimed to repeat the dose once more. The Hawks kicked into a strong north-westerly in the first quarter, kicking a goal while keeping the Eagles scoreless. With Cranbourne star Bianca Jakobbsson copping a heavy tag by Chantella Perera, and Kirsten McLeod being locked down across half-back, the Eagles continued their struggles in the second quarter as the Hawks surged ahead by kicking two more goals through Gabrielle Mahoney and Rose Dillon. With a bit more pressure placed on the Hawk defenders, the Eagles began to wrestle back some control over the contest, but still failed to put on any scoreboard pressure. Late in the quarter, the Hawks then struck again, with Emily Gilder getting out the back for an easy goal, undoing the hard work of the Eagles. With nothing left to lose, the Eagles finally scored through Bridie Kennedy, who converted a goal via a free kick, but couldn’t convert their momentum into any meaningful challenge on the scoreboard. Apart from the sole goal scorer Kennedy, who played a strong game for the Eagles, Rebecca Pearce was excellent for the home side, while Kayla Ripari and Darcy Guttridge tried hard but couldn’t get the game

STATE CHAMPIONSHIP MEN ROUND 18 The Casey Cavaliers have once again proven they will be a force to be reckoned with in the upcoming finals series, edging out Knox 75-77 away from home on Saturday night. In a good old fashioned arm wrestle to end the home-and-away season, the Cavs - off the back of Brandon Polk’s go-ahead bucket with nine seconds on the clock - found a way to win in one of their more impressive wins in the season. Brent Hobba (18 points, seven points) starred in just 25 minutes of game time, while Polk (13 points) was also a strong contributor. Attention now turns to the finals this weekend, where the Cavs (fifth) face an elimination final against Eltham Wildcats (fourth) on Saturday night. The game, which begins at 7pm at Eltham High School, will be a tough one for the Cavs. But the Cavs have lifted when facing the Wildcats this season, defeating them in both of their meetings. DIVISION ONE WOMEN ROUND 18 The Cavaliers’ Division One Women’s side has claimed the unwanted wooden spoon of 2017 after falling 7568 to Whittlesea Pacers. Needing a win to avoid the spoon, the Cavs were determined but ultimately outclassed by the Pacers. After falling behind in the first three quarters, the Cavs threw everything into their final term of the year, but couldn’t quite climb back into the match. Cranbourne coach Sein Clearihan conceded the losses hurt, but remains positive that in the long run his side will reap the benefits. “They’ll keep improving and the mindset will get better, but they’re not quite there yet,” he said. “I feel the girls have improved, but the problem is that the top sides continue to get better, and that’s the challenge - that’s the nature of the beast, unfortunately.” Despite another one-sided scoreboard, Clearihan remains proud of the effort his side brings every week. “The girls did battle hard, their endeavour was fantastic and I can’t question that but we have a long way to go,” he said. “We need to just focus on being competitive, and to put a couple of good quarters together, not just one quarter, but we need to try and set up for next year now as well.”

The Cavs simply got the job done on Sunday afternoon at Mill Park, surging away in a solid second half. Peta Rhodes (17 points, 10 rebounds) put in a strong performance. Dean leads Gulls home By David Nagel A stunning eight-goal haul from interleague forward Andrew Dean has steered Tooradin to its first single-digit victory in almost three years - a character-building two-point triumph over Doveton at Westernport Oval. The Seagulls twice clawed their way off the canvas in the last term, overcoming a three-goal deficit after 10-minutes and falling behind once again after a strong rally was answered by Doves’ forward Shannon Henwood at the 25-minute mark. Doveton’s best player on the day, Nick Battle, then narrowly missed what would have been a goal-of-the-year contender, before Josh Muling and Jake O’Donnell rushed the ball forward into the Seagulls forward 50. The ball tumbled end-over-end, and Dean leading Doves’ defender Matt Jameson to the ball, picked up cleanly before turning onto his right foot and drilling home the winner from 40 out. Both teams had their chances in the dying minutes, with the Gulls ahead at the final siren. “It was a really good win because we kept on fighting and didn’t give up, even when things didn’t look that good in the

last quarter,” Tooradin captain Adam Galea said. “That’s what we’re trying to promote, having a bit of pride in the jumper and really digging deep to try and breed a winning culture. It’s all about knowing how to win, clubs like Berwick, Cranbourne and Narre Warren just know how to get it done, and it’s a huge part of the game.” Galea was full of praise for Dean, but not just for his goal-kicking exploits. “I think the goals were reward for effort, he deserves it,” Galea said. “With Deany, it’s not just about his lead-ups and his marking, he also applies enormous pressure in the forward line and locks it in.” Dean was a clear best on ground for the winners, while Julian Suarez kicked three and Muling, Nick Lang and O’Donnell had critical touches late in the game. The Seagulls now head to Berwick to try and keep their slim finals chances alive. “We’ve got nothing to lose this week, it’s a free swing for us and we know we can match it, we just need to do it for four quarters,” Galea said. “If we can take that next step and not drop away, I think we’re in with a big chance.”

In other games, Cranbourne booted 11 goals in the last quarter to run away with a 70-point victory over Pakenham, while Beaconsfield remains in contention for a top-three position after spoiling Officer’s party at Holm Park Reserve. And Narre Warren kicked the highest score for the season, booting 42 goals in a brutal 272-point victory over Hampton Park at Fox Road. Doves a force to reckon with on the court By David Nagel Doveton has shown the race for this year’s South East Football Netball League title is wide open with a stunning 62-51 victory over ladderleading Tooradin on Saturday. The Seagulls were celebrating the 300th senior game of their clubrecord holder Shona Wells, but the party balloons were soon pricked as the Doves came out blazing. The visitors were outstanding in the first quarter, scoring 18-10, with Rahni Samason (goal shooter) unstoppable, scoring 14 goals alone. Hayley Stewart (centre), Akanisi Seeto (wing defence) and Zali Mifsud (wing attack) were on top through the midcourt, with Mifsud - a VNL player with the Ariels - providing a point of difference in just her fourth game for the season. The Doves maintained their ad-

vantage at half time before blowing the game apart with a dominant 1811 third term. The Seagulls cut their 15-goal margin back to 11 in the final quarter - but the damage had been done. Narre Warren has pounced on Tooradin’s vulnerability, taking top spot with a 57-33 victory over Hampton Park at Fox Road. The Magpies lost two of their first three games, but have now put together a brilliant stretch of 10 to take back their footing at the top of the mountain. Familiar faces like Erin Clark (WD), Tracey Dell (goal keeper), Gabby Dwyer (goal shooter) and Britt Mashado (C) all put in solid four-quarter efforts while Tayla Shannon (goal attack) had the radar dialled in, scoring 12 goals in an electrifying third term. The Magpies had this one in the bag after a flying 15-8 start.

The Eagles quality of play was nothing to write home about in the swirling breeze, but taking the four points was important after recent losses to Narre Warren and Tooradin.
