Crazy year for SES

Presently, the unit has raised $71,941 and is trying to reach $118,000 to replace the old storm truck which

was not included in the funding pledge.

But fund-raising has proven difficult, due to problems raising funds in outer areas such as Gembrook and Ferntree Gully, despite the unit covering these towns.

These outer reach locations also pose travel difficulties for the unit and Owen said he would eventually like to see another SES station near the base

It’s been known for some time but now it’s official. The Emerald SES unit has been recognised as the hardest-working team in Victoria, after receiving an award for attending the most call-outs for assistance for the 2016-’17 period.

Due largely to the 9 October windstorm in 2016, during which the unit attended about 600 call-outs, the crews racked up an incredible 1276 call-outs, putting them well above the 900 callouts of their nearest rival, Frankston.

The Emerald unit was competing against 30 other SES units and won the Storm Award for the central region of Victoria at the annual central region award dinner in Mulgrave.

For a team of around 30 volunteers, each member attends on average 150 incidents, but many more incidents are not recorded in paperwork due to time constraints or it already being cleaned up when they get there.

Emerald SES controller Ben Owen attributed the win to the October storms, but also said the Dandenongs were a disaster prone area.

“We’re one of the most disaster prone areas in the world. Fires, storms, flash flooding are some of the incidents we attend.”

“People live under trees and it’s a high risk area.”

“We got over 600 calls on the week of 9 October - it was a struggle but we had CFA, Parks Victoria, and other SES units who came in and helped us,” he said.

The unit has one of the largest areas to cover in the state spanning the majority of the Dandenong ranges, from Ferntree Gully to Gembrook - an area that has over 20 CFA units.

What makes their award all the more incredible is the unit’s substandard and antiquated facilities they have, with the unit working out of a 30-year-old tin shed and using a 15-year-old storm truck to attend incidents.

“We’re having conversations with our own region about getting some more SES units out this side of Melbourne.”

Owen said he was pleased that the unit received the award to recognise

the dedication of the Emerald SES volunteer who often get call-outs in the middle of the night.

“It’s great recognition for the volunteer hours that have been put in.”

It's the art of excellence

By Effie Caloutas Three talented students from Monbulk College’s Studio Arts class of 2016 have had their work chosen for exhibitions in the VCE Season of Excellence.

About 3000 applicants applied for Top Arts, with only 40 getting in to the final event held in the 2017 VCE Season of Excellence at the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV).

Former student Hayley Watson was honoured as her work ‘Paranoid’ as one of 40 pieces chosen for the final exhibition.

Further to this, her work was also shown as a projected backdrop image accompanying the performance stage in the final event for Top Acts held on Friday 12 May at the Melbourne Recital Centre.

With a passion for photography, Ms Watson says it was great to be honoured in the final event.

“It was a great honour and privilege to be selected to have my work shown in the Top Arts exhibition,” she said.

“It made all the effort and time I put into my folio worthwhile.”

Meanwhile, Amy Lalanne and Josh Starick were also chosen for Top Shots at Monash Gallery of Art (MGA), which, along with Top Arts, is also part

Amy Lalanne’s photogram was also awarded an Honourable Mention at the opening of the exhibition.

Studying a Diploma of Visual Arts, Mr Starick felt extremely proud to have his work on display at the Top Shots final event.

“I felt very overwhelmed when I was chosen for Top Shots, that my work was chosen to be shown in such an important gallery,” he said.

Studying her first year of Criminal Justice, Ms Lalanne said she was proud of her achievement after the effort she put in to her folios.

“Year 12 is a huge commitment. It takes over so much time both in and outside the classroom,” she said.

“The amount of dedication and effort I put into my artistic developments and exploitations, my artworks, was definitely worth it by getting the opportunity to display my artwork for the public and other students to view and interpret.”

Pain lies underneath

By Derek Schlennstedt The Yarra Ranges is often considered a jewel of Victoria, with stunning fern gullies and green paddocks it’s a renowned tourist destination, but, beneath its untainted exterior lies a desperate need for crisis housing accommodation for homeless.

On any given night, in the backstreets and parks of Lilydale, Neal Taylor, CEO of Holy Fools could point out the many locations where people have chosen to sleep - many of which would come as a surprise.

To help raise awareness for the need of a drop-in centre in Lilydale, Billanook Ward Councillor, Tim Heenan, will for his 10th year brave the cold and frost, spending nine nights under the stars in a cardboard box.

Accompanied by Neal Taylor and the Holy Fools, the sleep-out will take place from 4-13 August, coinciding with National Homelessness week.

By the end Cr Heenan will have spent 134 days altogether in Melba Park, Lilydale in his cardboard box.

Cr Heenan began sleeping out in 2008 and said he would continue to participate until people became informed.

This year he is calling on the community to help find a site for Holy Fools to set up a drop-in centre which Lilydale is in dire need of.

“A lot of stuff we do is all reactive, but if we really looked inside our hearts and heads we should be doing things more pro-actively,” Cr Heenan said.

“We keep doing this because we haven’t got the ultimate.”

“Holy Fools needs a drop-in centre, a factory space in Lilydale and we need someone to come forward.”

“We can make a really big difference, Holy Fools just needs to get that little opportunity to go forward and then the whole community will benefit,” Cr Heenan said.

Emu harassed Last week, DELWP wildlife officers received reports from several community members regarding an emu roaming in the Dandenong Ranges, in Doongalla Forest.

The emu was seen by numerous people, and witnesses also said they had seen the bird harassed and chased by people.

They had seen it come close to being hit by a car when it tried to cross the road.

DELWP reported that a number of residents saw the emu in Kalorama by the roadside and helped to corral it into a yard after which DELWP officers arranged collection and rehoming of the bird to a wildlife licence holder. DELWP officers believe that the emu was most likely released into the wild by a private owner who no longer wanted it, as emus generally do not inhabit the Dandenong Ranges.

Rather than releasing animals into the wild, DELWP urges anyone who no longer wishes to keep wildlife to contact them on 136 186.

Mr Taylor said he and Cr Heenan had seen the increase in the past three years with more people attending each year.

“It never used to be as big as it has in the past three years,” Mr Taylor said.

“It’s become evident, and has shown the need for the drop-in centre because during the event we get so many people who just come out of the woodwork they just appear.”

At risk youth supported for two years Young people at risk of disengaging from school will have continued support to reach their potential, with School Focused Youth Service funding renewed for two more years.

Earlier this month, Monbulk MP and Education Minister James Merlino approved a two-year contract to extend the SFYS program to 31 December 2019.

The program works to connect schools with local services to assist children who are at risk of disengaging from school due to challenges with family, housing, personal abilities or mental health reasons.

Funding for SFYS was due to expire on 31 December 2017.

Council wrote to Mr Merlino and the secretary of the Department of Education and Training in April, advocating for the funding to be re-committed.

Yarra Ranges Mayor, Cr Noel Cliff, welcomed the Victorian Government’s announcement and said the program’s continuation would help young people experiencing vulnerabilities to stay in school.

“Going through adolescence can be a tough time for any young person in our community and it can be hard to keep motivated at school if things aren’t going well,” Cr Cliff said.

“The School Focused Youth Service program plays a critical role in helping young people stay engaged with their

schooling, by providing support, creating programs and training for teachers.”

A Yarra Ranges school identified a group of students in Grades 5 and 6 who faced multiple barriers to staying engaged in education and created an intervention program with SFYS to help guide their transition to secondary school.

“Through team building opportunities, including sports and physical challenges, mentoring support and a family dinner, we expect to see these students continue a positive engagement with schooling into the future,” Cr Cliff said.

“We greatly appreciate the State Government re-committing funding to the School Focused Youth Service program,

which will help grow a positive schooling experience for vulnerable children in our community.”

Twenty per cent of young people experience issues such as disconnection and isolation, challenging family settings, mental health issues or homelessness.

Council previously campaigned for the government to renew its funding for SFYS in 2015.

A two-year funding commitment was made until the end of 2017.

An updated guideline for the SFYS program will be prepared by the Department of Education and Training, in consultation with providers.

Wild winds battered the Dandenong Ranges, bringing trees down and causing power outages, but luckily many houses remained unscathed.

Emerald SES attended 30 call outs on Saturday 29 July, but Ben Owen, controller at the Emerald unit said there was no major damage to properties.

"We had around 30 call outs, but there were no major reports of any property damage.

"There were a few trees leaning on houses, but they didn’t cause any major damage- we had two crews out all day, but it wasn’t a large storm event for what we’re used to.

Emerald crash On Sunday night, at 8.30pm Emerald SES were called to a single-vehicle crash on Ogilvy Road, Emerald.

Emerald and Clematis CFA were in attendance as well as police and paramedics, including a local vet who was called to the scene to assist the male driver in getting the dog out of the vehicle.

The vehicle had run off the road and down an embankment, rolling onto its side. Emerald SES helped to stabilise the vehicle from rolling further down the embankment, allowing the driver to crawl out.

The occupant was taken by ambulance to Dandenong Hospital in a stable condition. The dog is believed to have suffered no serious injuries.

Mooney’s on centre stage The 1812 Theatre has welcomed top comedian and media identity Lawrence Mooney as its Patron, in recognition of his strong ties to the company and his long and successful career.

The board of management recently made the announcement, saying it “looks forward to a long and fruitful relationship” with Mooney.

The renowned comic’s affiliation with The 1812 Theatre in Upper Ferntree Gully runs deep.

In 1984, Mooney walked into The 1812 Theatre in Rose Street and was immediately put to work on constructing a set for a show called ‘Veronica’s Room’.

This was one of the first times he had gone to live theatre, so the next year he decided to see what theatre was all about and went to an audition for the first show of 1985.

Jon Lowe, chairman of the company, welcomed him and immediately cast him in a comedy about cricket called ‘Outside Edge’ that he was directing.

Mooney was cast and while he didn’t have a main role, he did have his own cricket pads and bat.

As with all seasons at the 1812, the rehearsal went for six weeks and there were 20 shows over four weeks, so Lawrence quickly fell under the spell and smell of the ‘greasepaint’.

Over the next few years, Mooney was cast in several more plays but the highlight

was being part of The 1812’s production of ‘Such is Life’ a play about Ned Kelly that was taken to Monaco as part of the 1985 World Amateur Theatre Festival.

The 1812 had been invited to attend as Australia’s representative company.

Mooney very nearly didn’t go to Monaco because he “was saving for a house”.

But he was soon convinced that was “so bourgeois” and that at his age he should be “seeing the world” ... so he did!

The company took some 20 people that were involved in the production, along with several friends/relatives.

Mooney and the rest of the company performed on the opening night in the Salle Garnier Theatre, which is part of the Monaco Casino building and there was a full house of over 500 people including Princess Antoinette, sister of Prince Rainier!

Clearly, Mooney was ‘hooked’ on performance.

On his return, he was part of a few more shows at The 1812 before he decided to try and break into the professional scene as a stand-up comic.

The rest is history, as they say.

Since then, Mooney has become a stand-up comedian and is widely regarded by fans and peers as one of the funniest of the funny.

Spotlight on Kalorama pioneers in the park A host of dignitaries attended the unveiling of new information boards at Kalorama Park on Sunday 16 July.

Yarra Ranges Mayor Noel Cliff, Cr Jim Child, Jaci Lees from Parks Victoria, and members of the Kalorama Park Group and Historical Society, were among those to honour the occasion.

Also in attendance were descendants of the Jeeves family who built the original Kalorama Homestead.

The boards now reflect the stories of the pioneering Jeeves family, about how they came to settle in the

area and what they achieved.

The origin of the name Kalorama is also explained.

The information boards are attached to the chimney breast in the pavilion at the park, which is the approximate location of the original chimney of Kalorama House.

At the event, Cr Child recalled his memories of the farm that was located in the area.

By Peter Douglas and Bonny Burrows Gembrook MP Brad Battin is seeking the reinstatement of ousted local early years management organisation, Kinders Together.

Mr Battin has started an online petition that asks members to show their support for Kinders Together, which has failed to win Cardinia Shire Council’s support for a new tender to manage the shire’s preschools.

This includes preschools at Emerald and Avonsleigh.

At council’s 17 July general meeting, council did decide to overturn a decision to outsource some preschool management to Western Australia-based organisation One Tree, but opted to stand its ground on the Glen Waverley-based Bestchance.

The decision follows a community information session in mid-July, organised by members of the Keep Kinders Together campaign, and a kindergarten meet and greet where councillors stepped inside their local centres to hear first-hand from concerned staff who feared they would lose their jobs come next year.

In encouraging the community to support the petition, Mr Battin said council shouldn’t have supported a “flawed” process.

“The council admitted the process was flawed and there was no consultation with you as parents about your child’s education or welfare,” Mr Battin wrote.

Parents, who have joined together to form the Keep Our Kinders Together campaign, are outraged they were not consulted on a process that directly impacted on their children’s future and are devastated that what they said was the council’s “neglect” could place their children “at risk”.

At the council meeting, the debate centred around a lack of consultation in the process.

Ranges Ward councillor Jeff Springfield said the manner in which the organisations were chosen was “flawed and inadequate” and added he wanted to

see the process started again to include the community.

Although he wasn’t sure if a do-over would result in a different outcome, as “I am confident Bestchance outperformed all other candidates”.

Mayor Brett Owen also voted to recommence the process, saying he thought council had “failed to communicate”.

“As a father myself with a child who goes to kindergarten ... I won’t be supporting this process,” Cr Owen said.

“With such a big change like this, you need to bring the community with you. If you can’t get it right, you can’t get the end result right.”

“When we go for a walk, they love taking bags and picking up all the rubbish we find, to save it from the waterways, and to recycle,” she said.

The fashion of the times The Ferntree Gully Auxiliary Fashion Parade was declared a rousing success on Tuesday 18 July, with plenty of fun and frivolity accompanying the event at the Masonic Hall in Ferntree Gully. All funds raised on the day went to Angliss Hospital.

Ferntree Gully Auxiliary Secretary Denise Gravatt said close to $900 was raised at this year’s parade. “The fashion parade is one of the major events on the Ferntree Gully Auxiliary calendar. It’s a great opportunity for our members to get dressed up and have a laugh or two. Most importantly, though, it is a terrific event for us to raise money for the Angliss Hospital.” Ms Gravatt said the hospital was a big part of the community and dedicated volunteers did an incredible job. Monbulk mother Sonja Leigh is on a mission to help out her beloved Dandenong Ranges, one plastic straw at a time.

Ms Leigh said she had always been passionate about the environment and, as such, was inspired to found the Swap the Straw Dandenong Ranges movement in April.

Through the initiative, she is working closely with local business to phase out plastic straws and is running a competition for local primary school students to design creative ways to get rid of the environmental hazards.

Ms Leigh said she was in the first few weeks of her Graduate Certificate of Permaculture Design at CQUniversity, when she felt compelled to take action.

She wanted to do something pro-active for the Dandenong Ranges.

A former finance statistician for big banks, Ms Leigh said her background in engineering and mathematical sciences was good preparation.

“I love data, and stats, and I was always armed with statistics in my professional life ... but now I’ve got all that around environmental impact, and I’ve developed confidence in my own opinion and knowledge,” she said.

Trail back on track

By Bonny Burrows Works can now start on an off-road track 14 years in the making, with Cardinia Shire Council securing a contractor for the construction of the Cockatoo-Gembrook multi-use trail.

At the council’s 17 July general meeting, it was announced Melbourne-based company Kent Environmental and Vegetation Management would undertake construction of the trail at a cost of around $2.5 million.

A 6.5km extension to the EmeraldCockatoo path, the Cockatoo-Gembrook multi-use trail will increase residential access to vital community, recreation and commercial facilities.

The hills community has been pushing for the project’s fast-tracking since stage one was completed in 2003, with residents unsatisfied with the 2020 completion date.

Stage one included the construction of the Emerald-Cockatoo component through Emerald Lake Park and Wrights State Forest, providing a link between the two towns. However, little work has occurred since.

The council acknowledged the delay at its meeting, saying residents had been “very patient” as processes were finalised.

“The news of construction is really exciting, and the community is very excited. They have been waiting for many, many years,” Ranges Ward councillor Leticia Wilmot said.

Councillors themselves are also thrilled the project can now get underway.

Hills residents on Sunday 16 July joined the fight to stop the proposed Adani coalmine in Queensland’s Galilee Basin, with a protest held at Tecoma Uniting Church.

Organised by Stop Adani Belgrave, the group’s members viewed a screening of new documentary ‘Guarding The Galilee’.

The 30-minute documentary features Queensland-born actor Michael Caton and shines a spotlight on the battle to stop the ‘biggest coal mine in Australian history’.

Emmanuelle Blake, from Stop Adani Belgrave, said many in the community are worried about the potential environmental impacts.

“We decided to have the screening in Tecoma because we are all worried about the enormous impacts of Adani’s proposed coal mine on the reef, our climate and our future,” he said.

“We are also outraged at the possibility of our government giving Adani a $1 billion taxpayer funded loan for this destructive coalmine.”

Local residents who attended wrote messages to the Australian Government, suggesting how they would like to see the $1 billion spent.

Bob was larger than life OBITUARY

By Derek Schlennstedt Bob Armstrong was a person larger than life.

He was considered a renaissance man who spent his life devoted to the Wandin and Yarra Valley community he lived in.

So say many of the people, who, on 22 July, farewelled this much-loved local character.

Robert Keith Armstrong, known as ‘Bob’ all through his life, was born to Keith and Gwen Armstrong on 15 April 1930 in Newport and was followed in the family by younger brother Ian. His father, Keith, milled timber.

So Bob grew up in the hills around Noojee, attending the local school and eventually moving to Caulfield Grammar Boarding School - which Robyne Melia, Bob’s daughter, said he disliked. “He hated boarding school, he always said that these schools gave him the hint of a life he couldn’t afford to have,� she said.

But it was in his school years that there were inklings of Bob’s renaissance character, and during school he was an attentive listener keen on learning more about everything and anything.

During his boarding school years he also used music as a means of solace and became a boy soprano in the choir, even featuring on ABC radio. “Dad’s time at boarding school set him apart from his family in some ways,� she said.

He had a taste of what life could be, and not the means to attain it, but it gave him a voracious appetite for learning.�

In January 1939, Bob caught a glimpse of his future career when he was just nine years old, experiencing the devastation of the Black Friday fires which burnt through the town of Noojee - the family only survived by submerging themselves in a creek, emerging only to breathe.

Following school, he took up an apprenticeship at Land Rover and joined the Army Reserve in 1952, becoming a warrant officer and getting up to some humorous shenanigans which Robyne

Soon after, he married Judy West and his family grew with the birth of a daughter Robyne and son Glenn.

The family moved back to the Yarra Valley, settling in Wandin in 1960 and of course Bob joined the Wandin CFA. It was no surprise that Bob would become captain of Wandin CFA and be a key driver in devel-

oping the Road Accident Rescue response.

Throughout his life, he strived to be the best in whatever it was he dedicated his life to and it was no different when he joined Wandin CFA in 1961, becoming captain eight years later in 1969.

While there, Bob set up a legacy that would pave the future for what CFA would become.

He saw a need in the future for the CFA to be a part of road rescue incidents and put all his time and effort into introducing this change.

Being an experienced mechanic, he reconditioned many old trucks to utilise them as road rescue vehicles, even creating his own number plates, which son Glenn said was “driven down Swanston Street leading a parade, in front of adoring policemen and officials one year�.

In 1976, Bob and Ian Hunter travelled to America, undertaking a prestigious firefighters' course, where they were introduced to the jaws of life, which they promptly brought back to Australia where it was adopted by the CFA. Bob dedicated a life to helping others.

He was officer in charge at the Ash Wednesday fires and he introduced the Road Accident Rescue unit to Wandin and the state because he saw the need for it in the future.

Today, the Road Accident Rescue unit in Wandin is still used, and the same truck he reconditioned still attends incidents.

Bob left an enduring legacy, not only in the CFA but to those who knew him.

His dedication to friends and the wider community, and his infamous bending of the rules, made him an enduring and well-loved resident of the Yarra Ranges.

Daughter Robyne Melia remembers her father as a generous and sweet-spirited person. “He would do anything for any of us. He would drop anything to come to my aid, or my friend’s or family’s aid," she said. “Or to the aid of strangers. “And he cried for those he couldn’t save.�

Bob passed away in his sleep on Saturday 15 July.

Combine gets har vested

By Peter Douglas Three top draft hopefuls from the Yarra Ranges have been confirmed as starters for this year’s crucial AFL Draft Combine in Melbourne.

Potential first-round draftees Joel Garner (Wandin), Jaidyn Stephenson (Ferntree Gully) and Sam Hayes (Ferntree Gully) will be among 83 players from around Australia taking part from 3-6 October at Etihad Stadium.

The Combine allows AFL clubs to gain a better look at the players’ physical and mental attributes.

The trio have all been rated as strong chances of being drafted, with some draftwatchers predicting Stephenson and Hayes could go in the top 10, with Garner predicted as a late first-round or early secondround chance.

Despite sitting seventh on the TAC Cup ladder, the Eastern Ranges have a wealth of talent at their disposal, with an incredible 10 Ranges’ players making up 29 of the Victoria Metro squad members

to make the Combine cut.

Traditional heavyweights Sandringham Dragons (six representatives) and Oakleigh Chargers (four representatives) were the others to feature strongly.

More than two thirds of the players to attend the Combine will come from Victoria, with only eight from South Australia and 10 from Western Australia.

The players will be split into eight groups, based on their positions, for four days of testing, which will include two groups of medium midfielders and separate groups of tall forwards and ruckmen.

In the lead-up to the Combine, the local trio has performed exceptionally well.

Stephenson, in particular, would’ve impressed recruiters with his performances for Victoria Metro, booting five goals from 28 disposals against South Australia.

Hayes is listed as one of the most sought-after ruckmen in this year’s draft crop, while Garner, a good size at 183cm, has impressed at half-back and through the midfield.

Tour the most memorable for Clarke

By Peter Douglas Selby professional cyclist Simon Clarke has described his 2017 Tour de France campaign as one of his “most memorable” races.

After completing his third Tour on Monday 24 July, Clarke, the Cannondale-Drapac team captain, was elated after helping teammate Rigoberto Uran to a podium finish.

Uran put forward an incredible performance for the team, pushing eventual winner Chris Froome the entire race and finishing in second, just 54 seconds behind the Team Sky champion.

Cannondale-Drapac finished in seventh position in the Team Classification, with Clarke finishing in 86th overall in the General Classification.

Clarke was named team captain of Cannondale-Drapac for this year’s Tour, with his role including helping to execute team plans from on the road.

He told Bicycling Australia this year’s Tour is one of his greatest professional achievements.

“It’s amazing to come away with second place overall against such a strong team like Sky. It really feels like a victory in itself,” Clarke said.

“We didn’t come to the Tour de France with such an experienced group of riders, but we really united strongly together and created a really strong core to support (Uran).

“To come away with a second place is just amazing and shows how well we worked together.”

In his victory speech, Uran described the second place as the greatest success of his career.

“Finishing second to Froome at less than a minute seems pretty good to me,” Uran said after the race.

“It’s a quality final podium in Paris,

so this is the greatest success of my career. This result is dedicated to my family, friends, my team and everyone who has supported me during the last three weeks.”

While Clarke played largely a team role, he also notched up some personal achievements during his third Tour.

During the 21-stage race, he climbed as high as 39th overall in the General Classification and finished as one of the top Australian riders.

Rain bound for Earth Hills-based artist Rain White is preparing to show off her talent to local audiences, with her solo exhibition ‘Earthbound’.

The exhibition focuses on White’s creative exploration of eternal elements of earth, time and place, with a heavy emphasis on landscape.

White said she sees landscape as a metaphor, evoking ancient icons as well as traditional and contemporary sacred sites.

Having lived in the Dandenong Ranges her whole life, local landscape plays an important role in her creative visions.

“I see colour schemes appear in my work from a walk I have been on in the forests, or

a concern I have regarding the preservation of our fauna and flora as the population grows,” she said.

“You may recognise the landscape features from Birdsland’s Reserve or Wilsons Prom.”

White said she had recently delved into sculpture.

“Recently, I have totally jumped off the canvas into a three-dimensional form, using various types of earthenware and stoneware clays, which I am absolutely loving,” she said.

The Bye Bye Man is a recent horror movie that both critics and audiences have been tearing apart, but I found it to be a surprisingly solid film - or, more accurately, half of it is.

The film follows college students Elliot (Douglas Smith), his girlfriend Sasha (Cressida Bonas) and best friend John (Lucien Laviscount) as they rent a spacious yet creepy property together.

While settling in, they learn of a demonic being named ’The Bye Bye Man’, whose very name marks you for death.

The Bye Bye Man is a prime example of the old expression ’it gets better later’. In the first half, the acting is flat and wooden, and none of the characters speak or behave convincingly. The film has a generally eerie vibe, but many of the intended tense moments in this first half are overblown and predictable.

But then The Bye Bye Man undergoes a huge escalation in quality.

The performances become more natural, and where the film previously dragged its feet with its own clever premise - of a name inducing insanity and condemning those who hear it to death - now the film throws Elliot down a compelling, graphic descent into madness, as he desperately tries to outwit a powerful evil, with a genuinely shocking twist.

The Bye Bye Man is a pretty decent (if thoroughly illogical) schlocky horror movie once it gets its act together.

Hawks end their season undefeated

AFL YARRA RANGES Four rounds to go for Division 1 and the ladder positions are certainly open for sweeping changes. Sixteen points are up for grabs and there is only 14 points separating first and fifth.

On form, you would think Upwey will stay in fifth place, but Healesville, Wandin, Woori Yallock and Olinda can easily change positions.

With three rounds to go for Division 2, it looks like the top two positions are only up for grabs by Belgrave and Seville. However, positions third to sixth will be fought out between Yarra Glen, Powelltown, Alexandra and Kinglake.

The one they all want is third, so look out Yarra Glen and Powelltown.

Division 1 Seniors Football Round 14 Healesville 14.20(104) d Emerald 8.12(60) Healesville hold onto a two-point break on top of the ladder after a big win over eighth-placed Emerald. The first quarter was tight with Healesville kicking 3.9 to 3.1. They took complete control in the second term kicking five goals to one and claiming a lead of 30 points at half-time. They continued that form in the third quarter but inaccuracy was causing them problems with 6.9 to Emerald’s solitary three behinds. The last quarter was all Emerald kicking 4.4 while holding the competition leaders to zip but the game was won by Healesville in the third quarter.

Mount Evelyn had the game in the bag after the first quarter, booting 7.7 to two behinds and a healthy 47-point lead at quarter-time.

Gembrook could only manage one behind in the second term while Mount Evelyn added to their score, kicking 3.2.

Another consistent quarter in the third with a five-goal-to-one quarter and the three-quarter time break was 92 points.

Gembrook played better in the last quarter, kicking 3.4 to 3.2.

Upwey-Tecoma 22.21(153) d Monbulk 13.10(88) Fifth-placed Upwey-Tecoma have made it tough now for seventh-placed Monbulk to really challenge for the final five after a 65-point win on Saturday.

Both sides put on a goal kicking display in the first term with 15 goals being kicked but Upwey held a small lead of eight points at quarter time. Upwey broke loose in the second quarter, kicking 5.3 to 2.4 and claiming a lead of 25 points at half-time. Monbulk could not match it with them in the third term as Upwey continued their second-quarter form, kicking 5.8 to 1.1. The last quarter was much of the same with a four goal to three quarter and the game was in the bag.

MONBULK JUNIOR FOOTBALL With only one game left in the regular season, Monbulk Junior Football Club Under 16s finished undefeated, as next week they have the bye.

All other teams are in their penultimate round before the finals campaign starts, excluding the Under 9s and 10s.

They can only be congratulated on a terrific year of development and growth.

Let’s hope they pull on the boots again next year.

UNDER 11 The Under 11s certainly came to play today, hard at the ball determined and fierce at all contests. The scoreboard represented what can only be described as a great performance.

UNDER 12 GIRLS A really impressive team game by the girls today - they all endeavoured to be first to touch the football and transferred the ball with purpose. They have taken a big step in the game today which will help their crusade into next week’s finals. Well done.

UNDER 12 The first meeting since last year’s grand final and the opposition were certainly up for it. Looking forward to a possible rematch ‘No. 3’ in the weeks ahead.

Warburton came out and stunned the more fancied Wandin by kicking 3.4 to 2.5 in the first term and held a surprising lead of five points at quarter-time. The tables turned in the second quarter and the margin could have been much worse if Wandin had their kicking boots on as they kicked 3.10 to one straight to switch the lead in their favour by 17 points at half-time. Accuracy improved in the third term with Wandin managing 3.3 to 2.3. The last quarter was all tied up with both sides kicking 2.5.

It was Woori Yallock’s turn in the second quarter and they piled on 6.6 to one behind to arrest the lead at the main break by seven points. Again, a flip in leaders at threequarter time, with Olinda going into the final break with a 21-point lead after kicking 7.1 to 2.3. The last quarter was a cracker as Olinda battled the conditions and new that Woori Yallock was coming.

Thornton took advantage of the conditions in the third term and kicked 4.5 to 2.1, stretching their lead to 17 points at three-quarter time. Belgrave bounced back in the second quarter with the aid of the conditions kicking 6.5 to one straight and the favourites were 19 points up at half-time. Yarra Glen dominated in the third term booting 6.5 to 2.1 and the lead had swung back into Yarra Glen’s favour by nine points. The last quarter was going to be tough but Belgrave stood tall and showed why they are the minor premiers after Round 15 by kicking 4.8 to 2.2 to come home with a nine-point win.

Outstanding run

By Jamie Strudley YARRA RANGES ATHLETICS Yarra Ranges Athletics competed at Round 7 of the Athletics Victoria XCR17 season last Saturday.

Road races around Lake Wendouree in Ballarat were made even harder by gale force winds.

The course, made famous by Steve Moneghetti, was flat and fast except for the bits with head or cross winds – they were no fun!

Some outstanding runs from the club’s underage athletes over 6km set the scene for the 15km race for our open athletes.

Leading the way over 6km was Harry Norman, followed closely by James Laven. Georgia Laven continued her find form to lead in fellow YRA athletes in the girls race.

The Open athletes had to complete two-and-a bit laps of the windy course.

First home was James Anderson showing the rewards for consistent training, narrowly edging past club legend Michael Clarke.

Judy May showed the wind was no obstacle in her last hit-out before heading to Europe for the mountain racing season with an impressive performance to lead the open women home ahead of Amanda Laven and a surprised Sue McCall.

A big thank you and shout out to junior athletes, Zoe Clarke and Lily Clarke, for helping out on water stations without being asked.

Next up for the senior team is the relays in Anglesea on 12 August.

greeted the Yarra Ranges Athletes for the Saturday morning cross country, followed by a well-earned barbecue.

The new venue was Elizabeth Bridge Reserve in Kilsyth, a picturesque park with some slight hills to navigate.

The wind really made the going tough but did not dampen the spirits of the athletes who all enjoyed a welcome change of venue.

With the less demanding course, many fantastic times were achieved.

Small fields meant a lot of fun and working together to navigate the new venue.

The morning was capped off with a yummy barbecue of sausages and bacon and eggs.

Next week the club journeys to Cockatoo for the annual Hills Challenge and will be working hard to bring home the perpetual trophy for the fifth year in a row – fingers crossed.

A special thank you to all that helped make the day a fantastic success.

Monbulk Rangers Soccer Club’s senior women’s team won away against Berwick City 4-1 in the FFV State League on Sunday.

Motoring Child car seats a worr y A trial to recycle child car seats is helping to save lives, through preventing the risks associated through ‘hand-me-down’ car seats.

Child car seats provide a vital safety function.

But when children outgrow their car seat, many families pass on or sell their disused restraints into another family, or throw them out.

Sadly, both these options can have horrific ramifications, if the seats are unsafe for use.

A car seat can be dangerous if it is worn out and no longer provides the same safety functions, or is less safe than newer models that meet modern standards.

Meanwhile, estimates suggest more than 200,000 child car seats are disposed of annually, with most sent to a landfill.

This figure is staggering, given at least 90 per cent of materials contained in a car seat are recyclable.

This is why the RACV has developed a new trial, which offers parents a free and environmentally friendly option to drop off their disused car seat to be recycled.

By collecting and disassembling the car seats on-site, the program aims to save in excess of 900 tonnes of waste going to landfill.

RACV Manager Road User Behaviour, Rebekah Smith, encouraged road-users to support the program.

“RACV encourages families to recycle their used car seats to ensure our children travel safely on our roads and our environment is protected,” Ms Smith said.

“Putting a child in a secondhand car seat can pose a great risk to the child’s safety.

“This new program offers a responsible solution to dispose of potentially unsafe child car seats.”

The free trail will runs until Wednesday 30 August.

A collection site has been established at the Darebin Resource Recovery Centre, 30 Kurnai Avenue, Reservoir, Victoria.

The following types of child car seats will be acceptable for disposal at the collection site: Rear facing seats and capsules; Forward facing seats; and Booster seats.

Million hybrids mark selling hybrid vehicle, with total sales approaching four million cars.

These significant hybrid sales achievements align closely with the Toyota-sponsored 2017 National Tree Day, which took place on Sunday 30 July.

Based on global TMC calculations, Toyota’s 80,000 hybrid cars have saved Australian motorists about 232 million litres of petrol and reduced CO2 emissions by 560 million kilograms.

Toyota Australia’s executive director sales and marketing, Tony Cramb, said Prius started a revolution that had resulted in hybrids becoming mainstream vehicles, with global sales topping one million a year.

“When Prius arrived, the focus was on how hybrids could save fuel and reduce emissions both of which remain central to

their benefits,” Mr Cramb said.

“Now, with the fourth-generation Prius and hybrid variants of Camry and Corolla, you can add driving enjoyment and greater emotional appeal to the mix.”

Toyota regards hybrid technology as a core platform that will lead to more advanced solutions with low or zero tailpipe emissions.

Hybrids achieve excellent fuel consumption and low CO2 emissions with virtually zero output of oxides of nitrogen (NOx) or particulate matter.

Toyota’s hybrid cars drive like their petrol and diesel equivalent.

The hybrid batter recharge itself while the car is being driven and offers the ability to operate on the electric power alone for short distance.

Toyota is set to sell its 80,000th hybrid vehicle in Australia - a milestone that occurs almost 20 years after the first Prius was launched in Japan.

The local company’s hybrid sales counter started ticking in 2001, with the arrival in Australia of the first of four generations of the iconic Prius.

Since then, Toyota has expanded its hybrid range to include Camry (2010), the Prius c city car, the seven-seat Prius v (both 2012) and Corolla (2016).
