and said the plan was to begin a restoration project on the home and the artwork that is at the heart of the building’s artistic integrity.

“The plan here is to begin a restoration project of Bob’s home and the wonderful artwork that is his legacy,” he said.

He said the scope of the work was quite extensive and Bob and his supporters would be looking for community support and assistance, including financial assistance in the future.

“Everyone wants to see a really positive outcome here and I think it’s really important that we all work with council on this,” he said.

Mr Prudhoe was set to meet with council to discuss ‘make safe’ works recently recommended.

Mr Mac said a community meeting would be held in the near future to inform interested community members of the outcomes and recommendations.

Ms Wastie said council had been working with Mr Prudhoe to address a recent emergency order that required him to remove most of the fire damaged section of the site and do work on the shower/toilet block and treehouse structure.

She said the majority of those works had been completed.

“Unfortunately, some of the structures cannot be made safe due to the unconventional and non-compliant method of construction and the way they have weathered and deteriorated over time.”

Ms Wastie said temporary fencing barriers would need to be put in place to restrict access to those structures considered to be unsafe until they were made safe or removed.

Warburton builder Paul Mac has been working with Mr Prudhoe over the past year, and more recently with council to achieve a resolution that would see the Sculpture House made safe, and survive.

He confirmed that the council’s recommendations did not constitute a demolition order

Yarra Ranges Council has refuted claims on social media that a demolition order has been put on Bob Prudhoe’s famous Warburton Sculpture House.

The unique house on Highfield Road has been at the centre of controversy for a number of years with Yarra Ranges Council in 2013 requiring works to be done to bring it in to line with council regulations.

The issue has reared again, with council forwarding a structural engineer's report to Mr Prudhoe making a number of recommendations so structural repairs can be made, including work on one of the key elements of the house, the bay windows.

With fears that the report signalled demolition, a number of people have taken to social media calling for the house to be saved, and launching a fund to support Mr Prudhoe with the costs involved.

Responding on its website, the council said it had been working with Mr Prudhoe to find a way to reduce a number of risks and safety concerns around the iconic house.

“There is no current building notice or building order for the demolition of the Warburton Sculpture House,” the notice advised.

Director Social and Economic Development, Ali Wastie, said the council had engaged a structural engineer in March to determine the extent of works required to help the building meet the building code and regulations.

They included fencing off sections of the house until they could be rebuilt and removing sections that had significantly

Grassroots issues shape policy calls Yarra Valley community leaders enjoyed the chance to provide input on the policy direction of the Victorian Opposition on Monday 31 July.

With State Elections due in November next year, the Shadow Cabinet took time out to descend on the Memo in Healesville for a special luncheon, with community leaders encouraged to network and ‘grab the ear’ of the ministers to highlight grassroots issues.

Opposition Leader Matthew Guy and Nationals Leader Peter Walsh were among the MPs to attend, with Eildon MP Cindy McLeish also making the most of the opportunity.

Representatives from local emergency services, Yarra Ranges Tourism, Yarra Ranges Council and the Eastern Community Legal Centre were among those to attend.

Mr Guy told the guests the luncheon was part of the Opposition’s plan to grow Victoria through engaging with non-central Melbourne regions.

“We’re here to talk with you, have those conversations on your patch. This is where good policy comes from,” Mr Guy said.

“Too often in politics, Australians see politicians focus on the next 24 hours, maybe the next two to three years. We want to fundamentally change

that debate.”

Mr Guy said the Opposition wanted to see more growth in outer-suburban and regional areas.

“You can’t run a state with a two or even three-speed economy. So we want to start to grow all of Victoria,” he said.

“What that means for a place like the Yarra Valley is making sure you’ve got the State Government working with local governments and local groups to champion local projects, local ideas and local industry.

“So that not just yourselves, but your children and future generations, don’t have to leave here to get a good job. You don’t have

to leave your local community in order to succeed.

“Indeed, you can be a magnet here for others to come and grow their business opportunities.”

Mr Walsh agreed the luncheon would shape policy moving forward.

“We’re currently going through the policy development process coming up to the election next November,” Mr Walsh said.

“So it’s your chance to put forth the issues you think should be included in policy.”

In addition to the luncheon, Mr Guy also took the opportunity to walk the main street of Healesville to speak with residents and business owners.

Enterprise boss loss hurts

By Kath Gannaway The sudden death of Upper Yarra Community Enterprise Ltd chairman Peter Kimberley has come as a terrible blow to his family, many friends and the Warburton community.

The Mail wrote in April of Peter’s appointment to the Board of Trustees of world-wide service organisation Kiwanis International, and of his passion for taking on that role.

He was inducted into that role at the Kiwanis International Convention in Paris, and was flying home with his

wife Sue when he became gravely ill as the plane flew into Dubai.

He passed away on 18 July.

As a new-comer to Warburton, Peter joined the UYCEL board, continuing his passion for volunteering and community building, and in that role was often the face of the Warburton and Yarra Junction Bendigo Community banks within the Upper Yarra communities.

UYCEL fellow board member Jim Child said his death had devastated his colleagues and friends.

“In a way, Peter was unique for us ... he was an unknown when he applied for directorship at the bank,� Mr Child said. “It says a lot about him that he became our chair. “Everyone admired him, he was such a positive person for the community and always ready to sit and discuss the pros and cons of a proposal and come to a good decision.�

He said Peter’s financial expertise was overwhelming and that he was a pleasure to work with.

Peter was a Kiwanian for 35 years, holding numerous leadership positions including district governor, Asia Pacific chairman and regional director of The Eliminate Project that aims to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus worldwide.

A funeral service for Peter will be held at Karralyka Centre, Mines Road, Ringwood East on Friday, 4 August at 2pm.

The Mail extends sincere condolences to Sue and their two sons and their families.

Briefly Upper Yarra break-ins A number of break-ins in the Upper Yarra Valley have police urging business owners and residents to take precautions and lock all windows, doors and garages.

On 22 July at 3am, Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit reported that thieves broke into Wandin Motors Service Station in Wandin North and stole $1500 worth of cigarettes.

Then on 24 July, in Wandin North at Rue De Gare, a resident’s garage was broken into and a Yamaha XJ6 motorcycle was stolen.

The offender forced open the back door to gain entry into the garage, and it is believed the bike was taken between 10am and 4pm.

Macclesfield Primary school was also broken into when offenders jimmied open the front door of the school on 29 June, between 3.30 and 4am. The offenders ransacked the office and took a sack of 20 Auskick footballs along with several laptops which were reportedly already broken.

Anyone with information about the crimes or who has seen anything suspicious is urged to call Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit on 9739 2300 or call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Information can be provided anonymously.

Wind couldn’t dampen festive spirit Warburton’s River of Light Winter Festival was a wonderful success on Saturday 29 July, despite a blast from Mother Nature! “We were so focused on hoping it didn’t rain, we forgot to ask for no wind,� said Sam Watson, who along with Phoebe Lines organised the midwinter festival. “We were very impressed with the

turn-out, given the wind.�

The main event, the Lantern Parade proceeded along the main street and a small section of the Yarra River walk deemed safe. “The CFA has their torches to guide us, and it looked very beautiful,� Sam said.

The festivities continued in the Mechanics Institute Hall with hot food, poetry and music.

Natural gas in full swing The state of

Rollout of natural gas in Warburton is in full swing and I am very proud to see Warburton residents are beginning to take up connections as a result of the election commitment delivered by the State Coalition Government in 2014.

To encourage households to take up

a connection, the first 500 customers are eligible for rebates to assist with the conversion and purchase of a new gas appliance.

Multinet Gas will be running an information forum at the Warburton Mechanics Hall on 9 August from 7pm and I encourage locals to find out more about how the rollout can benefit their households.

At around one third of the price of bottled gas, the new reticulated supply will go a long way to helping local households to survive this winter and the cost of electricity for those who use it for cooking and heating.

Of course, winter is a terrible time to come home and find your electricity has been cut off.

For many people, they are now being forced to decide whether they want to keep the heating on or keep the refrigerator running.

That’s a choice no-one should have to make; but unfortunately, more and more Victorians are facing this reality because energy prices are going through the roof.

Victorians are finding it harder to pay their electricity bills with 53,565 customers on hardship programs with their electricity retailer during 2014-

’15, an increase of 250 per cent since 2010-’11 while disconnections increased by 44 per cent in this year’s March quarter.

According to the ABS, electricity prices increased 7.7 per cent following the Andrews Labor Government’s sudden announcement that Hazelwood power station would shut down.

Because of that decision, Victorian households will be hit with having to pay on average $300 more to keep the lights on this year.

Victoria’s energy security is at great risk and according to Deloitte ‘Victoria and South Australia may need to

import energy at peak times (this summer) if intermittent generation (such as wind and solar) is unavailable’.

This is an important issue for Yarra Valley residents in particular with households and businesses being faced with constant power outages in the Upper Yarra as the result of bushfire safety upgrades, and the entire region being shut down when storms decimated the network last October.

Victoria was once home to affordable and reliable power, but we will soon be taken back to the dark ages with blackouts and unaffordable power prices if the situation does not change.

Safety for gliders

Lily D’Ambrosio, State Environment Minister for the Labor Government has announced that logging in Kings Coupe at Hermitage Creek in Toolangi State Forest will be temporarily halted because of vital greater glider habitat which may be in the area.

The announcement comes a month after greater gliders were added to the Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act and were recognised as a threatened species.

On 24 July Ms D’Ambrosio announced in a Twitter post that “no harvesting in Kings Coupe, Toolangi Forest,” would occur, “until we ensure high quality habitat for greater glider is protected.”

The Toolangi community and forest conservationists have welcomed the announcement but many aren’t convinced about its long-term legitimacy.

“We welcome the announcement and it’s really good but it’s only a beginning,” chairman of the Friends of Leadbeater’s Possum Steve Meacher said.

“What needs to happen is the coupe needs to be taken off the schedule permanently - anything less than that undermines the announcement she’s made.”

“This is an opportunity for the Minister for the Environment to show that she is serious about protecting species that are threatened.”

The coupe, located just off the Black Spur near Hermitage Creek is reported as having an extraordinary number of old hollow bearing trees which the gliders use for protection and as dens.

They are able to glide for more than 100 metres horizontally.

At the request of DELWP, VicForests has agreed that no harvesting operations will occur in Kings Coupe until DELWP is confident that high value habitat for the threatened Greater Glider within and adjacent to the coupe has been identified and will be protected from timber harvesting.

“That entire coupe is high quality habitat for the animal,” Mr Meacher said.

“The greater glider has the capacity to glide from tree to tree; it has a rea-

sonably large range.”

Vic Forests' Lachlan Spencer, General Manager Stakeholders and Planning said that they were working with DELWP to review the habitat protection measures.

“Timber harvesting operations have been suspended in Kings Coupe while

VicForests and the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning review the planned habitat protection measures,” he said.

“VicForests protects large hollow bearing trees as important habitat elements for the conservation of greater gliders and other tree dwelling species when planning all our operations.“

It’s a tower of strength

By Kath Gannaway Steels Creek is on the verge of a communication revival.

The communications tower funded by the Commonwealth Government as part of the Mobile Black Spot program instigated in 2014.

The tower is expected to be activated in a couple of weeks.

Steels Creek Community Association past president Allan Giffard has been involved with the drive to get Steels Creek on the Black Spot funding list from the start, and says while it has been a long process, it is a good outcome for the Steels Creek community.

He said one of the most encouraging things as a community was that it was a collaboration between the local community, Yarra Ranges Council and the state and federal governments.

“Tony was the driving force in ensuring everyone was on the same page to enable this to happen as quickly as possible,” he said.

“We would have liked it sooner, but as a community we got the result we needed.”

Mr Giffard said the 4G tower would provide peace of mind.

“Certainly, safety is important, but so is peace of mind,” he said.

“Knowing we now have communications available, that in itself is just as important as everything else.”

Mr Smith said the new tower was a great outcome.

“The new mobile tower is a great step forward for the Steels Creek community,” Mr Smith said.

“I have worked with them for four years to get this outcome.

“When the tower is switched on, the better coverage will help create a safer community, as well as benefitting local businesses and tourism.”

Winter, and a bit of snow cover has provided a key for reseeding of some of the more hardy species in harvested coupes across Victoria’s State forests.

VicForests spreads hundreds of millions of eucalyptus seeds across the forests each year to regrow areas that have been harvested to supply wood to Victoria’s timber industry.

Lachlan Spencer, VicForests general manager, Stakeholders and Planning said that helicopters aerially spread seeds over larger areas and smaller areas were sown by hand.

Mr Spencer said GPS gave a higher chance of a successful regeneration but in areas smaller than five hectares it was more accurate to sow by hand.

Coupes are burnt following harvesting to give the seeds the best possible chance to grow.

“The burns mimic the process of nature and create a natural ash bed to germinate the seeds,” Mr Spencer said.

“Some species, such as the Alpine Ash, are sown just before or in the snow as they require natural winter conditions in order to germinate,” he said.

VicForests has 17 tonnes of seed in storage and just one kilogram of seed contains 250,000 potential trees. VicForests has spread about 377 million seeds across 2273 hectares this year.

Pain beneath the leaves

By Derek Schlennstedt The Yarra Ranges is often considered a jewel of Victoria, with stunning fern gullies and green paddocks it’s a renowned tourist destination, but, beneath its untainted exterior lies a desperate need for crisis housing accommodation for homeless.

On any given night, in the backstreets and parks of Lilydale, Neal Taylor, CEO of Holy Fools could point out the many locations where people have chosen to sleep - many of which would come as a surprise.

To help raise awareness for the need of a drop-in centre in Lilydale, Billanook Ward Councillor, Tim Heenan, will for his 10th year brave the cold and frost, spending nine nights under the stars in a cardboard box.

Accompanied by Neal Taylor and the Holy Fools, the sleepout will take place from 4-13 August, coinciding with National Homelessness week.

By the end Cr Heenan will have spent 134 days altogether in Melba Park, Lilydale in

his cardboard box.

Cr Heenan began sleeping out in 2008 and said he would continue to participate until people became informed.

This year he is calling on the community to help find a site for Holy Fools to set up a drop-in centre which Lilydale is in dire need of.

“A lot of stuff we do is all reactive, but if we really looked inside our hearts and heads we should be doing things more pro-actively,” Cr Heenan said.

“We keep doing this because we haven’t got the ultimate.”

“Holy Fools needs a drop-in centre, a factory space in Lilydale and we need someone to come forward.”

“We can make a really big difference, Holy Fools just needs to get that little opportunity to go forward and then the whole community will benefit,” Cr Heenan said.

Lilydale has long been a hub for homelessness and as more people move out from Melbourne pressure is mounting on

the need for a location where the homeless can go to wash, clean and store their belongings.

Mr Taylor said he and Cr Heenan had seen the increase in the past three years with more people attending each year.

“It never used to be as big as it has in the past three years,” Mr Taylor said.

“It’s become evident, and has shown the need for the drop-in centre because during the event we get so many people who just come out of the woodwork they just appear.”

The Yarra Ranges Homeless Winter Sleepout will include various activities and on 12 August from 6pm, Neal invites the public to join Holy Fools at Melba Park for a sleepout to experience a taste of homelessness.

The official launch is on Monday, 7 August from 10.30am and will include guest speaker Father Bob Maguire.

The Grand lends a hand to Sandra

By Derek Schlennstedt The Grand Hotel Healesville has once again offered a helping hand to a cherished member of the Healesville community.

On 23 June, The Grand presented Sandra Donkin with $5000 which was raised by the hotel’s patrons and staff over several months to help ease her financial problems.

Since February, 2016 Sandra has faced a debilitating battle with breast cancer that has robbed her of her health and financial stability.

The fund-raiser for Sandra started in April as part of a donation box which The Grand runs every month for a charity of their choice.

Patrons are able to donate an amount of their choice to the do-

nation box and after announcing that the donations would go toward helping Sandra Donkin, Michelle Schiavello, owner of the Grand Hotel Healesville said the donation box filled up very quickly.

Michelle said there was a big turnout for the presentation and that Sandra was overwhelmed with the best wishes.

“It was a huge turnout, the whole

place was packed and everything went really well,” she said.

“Sandra was absolutely overwhelmed, both she and her family came and they were so very grateful and overcome with thanks.

“The money will hopefully give her some help with treatments and of course relieve her of some financial stress.”

Bob was larger than life OBITUARY

By Derek Schlennstedt Bob Armstrong was a person larger than life.

He was considered a renaissance man who spent his life devoted to the Wandin and Yarra Valley community he lived in.

So say many of the people, who, on 22 July, farewelled this much-loved local character.

Robert Keith Armstrong, known as ‘Bob’ all through his life, was born to Keith and Gwen Armstrong on 15 April 1930 in Newport and was followed in the family by younger brother Ian. His father, Keith, milled timber.

So Bob grew up in the hills around Noojee, attending the local school and eventually moving to Caulfield Grammar Boarding School - which Robyne Melia, Bob’s daughter, said he disliked.

“He hated boarding school, he always said that these schools gave him the hint of a life he couldn’t afford to have,” she said.

But it was in his school years that there were inklings of Bob’s renaissance character, and during school he was an attentive listener keen on learning more about everything and anything.

During his boarding school years he also used music as a means of solace and became a boy soprano in the choir, even featuring on ABC radio.

“Dad’s time at boarding school set him apart from his family in some ways,” she said.

He had a taste of what life could be, and not the means to attain it, but it gave him a voracious appetite for learning.”

In January 1939, Bob caught a glimpse of his future career when he was just nine years old, experiencing the devastation of the Black Friday fires which burnt through the town of Noojee - the family only survived by submerging themselves in a creek, emerging only to breathe.

Following school, he took up an apprenticeship at Land Rover and joined the Army Reserve in 1952, becoming a warrant officer and getting up to some humorous shenanigans which Robyne

“There’s a story that Dad found a band worn by permanent army of his rank - he was reserve and because no-one quite knew what he was they just saluted and obeyed.”

“This is what he did all round - fudged the edges to get the required outcome,” Robyne said.

Soon after, he married Judy West and his family grew with the birth of a daughter Robyne and son Glenn.

The family moved back to the Yarra Valley, settling in Wandin in 1960 and of course Bob joined the Wandin CFA. It was no surprise that Bob would become captain of Wandin CFA and be a key driver in devel-

oping the Road Accident Rescue response.

Throughout his life, he strived to be the best in whatever it was he dedicated his life to and it was no different when he joined Wandin CFA in 1961, becoming captain eight years later in 1969.

While there, Bob set up a legacy that would pave the future for what CFA would become.

He saw a need in the future for the CFA to be a part of road rescue incidents and put all his time and effort into introducing this change.

Being an experienced mechanic, he reconditioned many old trucks to utilise them as road rescue vehicles, even attaching his own number plates, which son Glenn said were “driven down Swanston Street leading a parade, in front of adoring policemen and officials one year”.

In 1976, Bob and Ian Hunter travelled to America, undertaking a prestigious firefighters' course, where they were introduced to the jaws of life, which they promptly brought back to Australia where it was adopted by the CFA. Bob dedicated a life to helping others.

He was officer in charge at the Ash Wednesday fires and he introduced the Road Accident Rescue unit to Wandin and the state because he saw the need for it in the future.

Today, the Road Accident Rescue unit in Wandin is still used, and the same truck he reconditioned still attends incidents.

Bob left an enduring legacy, not only in the CFA but to those who knew him.

His dedication to friends and the wider community, and his infamous bending of the rules, made him an enduring and well-loved resident of the Yarra Ranges.

Daughter Robyne Melia remembers her father as a generous and sweet-spirited person.

“He would do anything for any of us. He would drop anything to come to my aid, or my friend’s or family’s aid," she said.

“Or to the aid of strangers.

“And he cried for those he couldn’t save.”

Bob passed away in his sleep on Saturday 15 July.

Why did you choose to set up a dental practice in Yarra Glen?

Well, after living here for 15 years (1998-2013), I decided that Yarra Glen really needed a local dentist as they have always had to travel! I felt that someone who had lived in the town was the best person for the job and so I took it on!

What do you love most about the township of Yarra Glen?

Well, my boyfriend at the time, Damien de Castella, lived here in 1998 and I was always coming out here to visit him. I loved the landscape and fresh air and the rural setting. He wooed me with the local wines and I was smitten. (He wasn’t bad either!) Little did I know that in six years’ time we would be married and living here with four kids under five years!

You have worked in the Yarra Valley before, haven’t you?

Yes, I worked at Healesville Dental Surgery from 2004-’08 and really enjoyed my time there, but left as we were re-locating our children to Donvale Christian College and I wanted to be close to the school.

What are your favourite areas of dentistry?

I really love to look after people in pain by diagnosing what’s wrong and then treating them so that they are comfortable again. That is really satisfying. I also love treating kids and my other favorite is root canal treatment - crazy, I know!

JUNE'S TOP PERFORMER THE latest REIV quarterly data shows multiple regional towns are now recording median house prices consistent with those in metropolitan Melbourne.

In the three months to 30 June, the state’s most expensive towns were predominantly located on the Bellarine Peninsula and Surf Coast.

Barwon Heads recorded the state’s highest median house price in the June quarter at $946,000.

The coastal town outperformed the metropolitan Melbourne median house price by more than $120,000.

High house prices were also recorded in the Ballarat suburb of Lake Wendouree, which now has a median house price of $722,000

- $80,000 higher than the median house price in Melbourne’s outer suburbs.

Geelong was another top performer in the June quarter with the regional city’s median house price topping $718,750.

This is a record high for the suburb and follows solid growth over the year.

Nearby Torquay also recorded its highest ever median house price in the June quarter, at $715,000.

The Surf Coast town remains attractive to buyers, experiencing consistent price growth since September 2015.

Houses in the Geelong suburb of Newtown were also some of the state’s most expensive with a

median of $710,000.

Point Lonsdale on the Bellarine Peninsula also made the list of Victoria’s most expensive towns with a median house price of $675,000.

Meanwhile, house prices in the commuter town of Gisborne are also on par with those in the city, recording a median of $670,000 in June.

This is significantly higher than regional Victoria’s $385,000 median house price.

Other towns with house prices higher than the statewide median include Highton ($618,750), Geelong West ($617,000) and Woodend ($612,500).

While many of regional

Victoria’s top performing towns are located within commuting distance of Melbourne, the Federal Government’s $1.45billion commitment to rail infrastructure will drive future price growth in

areas further from the city.

Tessa’s art goes solo for exhibition

Coldstream artist Tessa Hubble has won the opportunity for a solo exhibition at Yering Station Art Gallery.

Tessa was awarded the prize for artwork exhibited as part of the YouthArt 2017 Exhibition which is currently running at Art At Lindengate in Yarra Glen.

In March this year Tessa was awarded the Youth Art prize at the Yarra Glen Art Show giving her automatic entry into YouthArt 2017, setting the stage for a very successful year for the young artist.

YouthArt began in 2014 as a way of supporting and encouraging the next generation of local artists.

Art at Lindengate director Reggie Clark said the award encouraged young, local artists to continue with their art.

“It gives them an opportunity to exhibit and sell their quality works in a commercial setting in their community,” she said.

Encouragement, Exhibition and People’s Choice prizes are offered and the gallery covers all associated costs for the six-week exhibition which includes promotion, launch and mentoring.

“The young artists have a positive experience of exhibiting their work in a commercial setting which is still in a familiar environment,” Miss Clark said.

“They are encouraged to think about how

their artwork will be displayed professionally and they can contribute to producing the invitation, posters, setting up the exhibition and provide ideas for the opening.

“These experiences are a great first step into the art world,” she said.

YouthArt is hosted by Art at Linden Gate and supported by Yarra Ranges Council, Yering Station Art Gallery, RACV Club and Yarra Valley Arts.

On Saturday, 19 August, the Badger Creek Women’s Choir will take to the stage with a program of soul, Celtic, modern and traditional songs for their

first pub gig.

The choir, now in its fifth year, is a 25-member group of women of all ages who meet at Badger Creek Primary School to sing, and laugh, and share the joy of music.

They have played at many local venues and events including the Healesville Music Festival and Carols by Candlight.

The Bye Bye Man is a recent horror movie that both critics and audiences have been tearing apart, but I found it to be a surprisingly solid film - or, more accurately, half of it is.

The film follows college students Elliot (Douglas Smith), his girlfriend Sasha (Cressida Bonas) and best friend John (Lucien Laviscount) as they rent a spacious yet creepy property together.

While settling in, they

learn of a demonic being named ’The Bye Bye Man’, whose very name marks you for death.

The Bye Bye Man is a prime example of the old expression ’it gets better later’.

In the first half, the acting is flat and wooden, and none of the characters speak or behave convincingly.

The film has a generally eerie vibe, but many of the intended tense moments in this first half are overblown and predictable.

But then The Bye Bye Man undergoes a huge escalation in quality.

The performances become more natural, and where the film previously dragged its feet with its own clever premise - of a name inducing insanity and condemning those who hear it to death - now the film throws Elliot down a compelling, graphic descent into madness, as he desperately tries to outwit a powerful evil, with a genuinely shocking twist.

The Bye Bye Man is a pretty decent (if thoroughly illogical) schlocky horror movie once it gets its act together.

Sixteen points are up for grabs and there is only 14 points separating first and fifth.

On form, you would think Upwey will stay in fifth place, but Healesville, Wandin, Woori Yallock and Olinda can easily change positions.

With three rounds to go for Division 2, it looks like the top two positions are only up for grabs by Belgrave and Seville.

However, positions third to sixth will be fought out between Yarra Glen, Powelltown, Alexandra and Kinglake.

The one they all want is third, so look out Yarra Glen and Powelltown.

The last quarter was a cracker as Olinda battled the conditions and new that Woori Yallock was coming.

Woori kicked 2.11 to just one behind and came home with a one-point win at the final siren.

Alexandra started quickly kicking 5.3 to one goal in the first term and had a lead by 27 points at quartertime. Kinglake outscored Alexandra in the second quarter, kicking 2.1 to 1.2 but the lead was still Alexandra’s by 21 points at half-time. Alexandra piled on the goals in the third term, with a sixgoal-to-one quarter and the lead was now 43 points. Another impressive six goals to two last quarter and the game was all over.

Seville 15.11(101) d Powelltown 11.13(79) Seville have all but sewn up second spot on the ladder after a good win over fourth-placed Powelltown. Seville had control from the outset and kicked 5.2 to 2.3 to take a handy lead of 17 points into the second quarter.

Powelltown fought back in the second term kicking 3.3 to 2.3 and reduced the margin to 11 points at the main break.

Another good quarter by Powelltown in the third quarter and the margin was reduced to 10 points at three-quarter time. Seville regrouped in the last and managed to kick away with 6.3 to 4.3 and a 22-point win in the end.

The Emerald and Healesville netballers brought their best for match day. rallied and came back at them in the second quarter kicking 1.7 to 1.2 and Thornton’s lead was only one point at half-time. Thornton took advantage of the conditions in the third term and kicked 4.5 to 2.1, stretching their lead to 17 points at three-quarter time. Yea outscored Thornton in the last but it was not enough to come away with the win and Thornton hung on to win by 11 points.

Belgrave bounced back in the second quarter with the aid of the conditions kicking 6.5 to one straight and the favourites were 19 points up at half-time. Yarra Glen dominated in the third term booting 6.5 to 2.1 and the lead had swung back into Yarra Glen’s favour by nine points. The last quarter was going to be tough but Belgrave stood tall and showed why they are the minor premiers after Round 15 by kicking 4.8 to 2.2 to come home with a nine-point win.

Just like spring thing It was like a spring morning at the Woods Point Gun Club’s July competition, though a tad cold.

This didn’t stop Rob Bevis in AA Grade, Kaylene Estcourt and Daniel Chinn in AA Grade, Marty McLachlan in B Grade and Ronald Press in C Grade shooting 30/30 or 29/30 scores in the Eye Opener to share in the cash prizes.

The main event was the 40 target Matlock Double Barrel Championship sponsored by Geoff Hill with gold or silver belt buckles for the trophies and meat trays as well totalling over $800 in value.

These buckles are not available in Australia and were imported from the US by special order, while the meat trays, of course, were local.

Competition was tense and the scores suffered but Mick Ward with the only perfect 40/40 took the main trophy outright.

The AA Grade gold buckle was won by Andrew Estcourt from Warnambool Gun Club 39/40 from Rob Bevis 38/40 for a silver buckle.

A Grade was taken by Daryl Ewert, 64/65 from Peter West 63/65 with the B Grade winner being Geoff Hill, 39/40, Marty McLachlan 2nd, 37/40.

Shawn Wood took C Grade 36/40 followed by Dale Price, 36/44.

Well done to all of the winners and special thanks to Geoff Hill for his generous sponsorship of the event.

After a hearty hot lunch, The Matlock Double Rise Championship sponsored by Lyn and Rod Stewart of the Stewart Bus Company was next.

Conditions were good but the targets were elusive with only four shooters breaking 20 or more targets of the 30 possible.

Full bellies clearly slowed their reflexes.

Hawke takes it hard WARBURTON GOLF WEDNESDAY STABLEFORD: The winner, on a difficult scoring day, was Steuart Hawke, with 34 points. Roger Mataele was runner-up on 33. Balls went down to 31. The NTP winners were Ian Garside 9th, Steuart 10th and to the ‘evergreen’ Ralph Logan 12th.

SATURDAY Stableford: Liam Kay, one of the club's very promising juniors from the Warburton Golf Academy, had his first competition win on Saturday.

He scored 37 excellent points to be a clear winner. Alan Johnston snared the runner-up prize with 35 - having been a career teacher, AJ would be quite happy to see that a junior pipped him for the daily prize! Balls went to 31 again. NTPs went to Kempton Senior 3rd, Steuart Hawke 5th, Hatty Senior 9th, Chris Connell 12th and to Ken Barratt 15th.

Breaking away from working the club’s new computerised scoring system, Daniel Chinn won the event outright with 22/22 to take the championship sash.

AA Grade was a won by Andrew Estcourt, 35/50 from Mick Ward, 34/50, 2nd.

Chinn took the A Grade prize with Don Rhodes the runner-up.

Marty McLachlan, Robert Lay, Frank Balcombe and Geoff Hill fought out a shoot-off in B Grade with Hill taking first, 22/40 McLachlan 2nd, 27/50.

Kirsten Chinn won C Grade with 18/30 closely followed by Shawn Wood, 17/30.

The day finished with the Matlock 20 target Continental Championship sponsored by Laurie and Jo Poile of Wesburn.

After a shoot-off between Marty McLachlan, Philip Desmond, Andrew Estcourt, Mick Ward and Geoff Hill, McLachlan finished with the sash, 23/24, Desmond 2nd, 22/24, Hill 3rd, 21/23 and Estcourt 4th, 20/22.

The overall High Gun Sash sponsored

by Scott McKenzie of Jamieson River Autos was presented to Mick Ward, 79/90 from Daniel Chinn and Andrew Estcourt 78/90.

The next shoot is a Team Shield event against Mansfield Clay Target Club at Mansfield on 20 Sunday August, followed by the King of the Mountain Championships at Woods Point on Sunday 27 August starting at 10am.

Motoring Child car seats a worr y A trial to recycle child car seats is helping to save lives, through preventing the risks associated through ‘hand-me-down’ car seats.

Child car seats provide a vital safety function.

But when children outgrow their car seat, many families pass on or sell their disused restraints into another family, or throw them out.

Sadly, both these options can have horrific ramifications, if the seats are unsafe for use.

A car seat can be dangerous if it is worn out and no longer provides the same safety functions, or is less safe than newer models that meet modern standards.

Meanwhile, estimates suggest more than 200,000 child car seats are disposed of annually, with most sent to a landfill.

This figure is staggering, given at least 90 per cent of materials contained in a car seat are recyclable.

This is why the RACV has developed a new trial, which offers parents a free and environmentally friendly option to drop off their disused car seat to be recycled.

By collecting and disassembling the car seats on-site, the program aims to save in excess of 900 tonnes of waste going to landfill.

RACV Manager Road User Behaviour, Rebekah Smith, encouraged road-users to support the program.

“RACV encourages families to recycle their used car seats to ensure our children travel safely on our roads and our environment is protected,” Ms Smith said.

“Putting a child in a secondhand car seat can pose a great risk to the child’s safety.

“This new program offers a responsible solution to dispose of potentially unsafe child car seats.”

The free trail will runs until Wednesday 30 August.

A collection site has been established at the Darebin Resource Recovery Centre, 30 Kurnai Avenue, Reservoir, Victoria.

The following types of child car seats will be acceptable for disposal at the collection site: Rear facing seats and capsules; Forward facing seats; and Booster seats.

These significant hybrid sales achievements align closely with the Toyota-sponsored 2017 National Tree Day, which took place on Sunday 30 July.

Based on global TMC calculations, Toyota’s 80,000 hybrid cars have saved Australian motorists about 232 million litres of petrol and reduced CO2 emissions by 560 million kilograms.

Toyota Australia’s executive director sales and marketing, Tony Cramb, said Prius started a revolution that had resulted in hybrids becoming mainstream vehicles, with global sales topping one million a year.

“When Prius arrived, the focus was on how hybrids could save fuel and reduce emissions both of which remain central to

their benefits,” Mr Cramb said.

“Now, with the fourth-generation Prius and hybrid variants of Camry and Corolla, you can add driving enjoyment and greater emotional appeal to the mix.”

Toyota regards hybrid technology as a core platform that will lead to more advanced solutions with low or zero tailpipe emissions.

Hybrids achieve excellent fuel consumption and low CO2 emissions with virtually zero output of oxides of nitrogen (NOx) or particulate matter.

Toyota’s hybrid cars drive like their petrol and diesel equivalent.

The hybrid batter recharge itself while the car is being driven and offers the ability to operate on the electric power alone for short distance.

Toyota is set to sell its 80,000th hybrid vehicle in Australia - a milestone that occurs almost 20 years after the first Prius was launched in Japan.

The local company’s hybrid sales counter started ticking in 2001, with the arrival in Australia of the first of four generations of the iconic Prius.

Since then, Toyota has expanded its hybrid range to include Camry (2010), the Prius c city car, the seven-seat Prius v (both 2012) and Corolla (2016).

Camry accounts for more than half of all Toyota hybrid sales in Australia, with a total of almost 45,000 sedans abeing driven out of dealerships since its launch in 2010.

This makes Camry the topselling hybrid vehicle in Australia by far, followed by Prius with more than 20,000 sales.
