Two Pakenham schoolgirls have selflessly fund-raised $100 for children less fortunate after being inspired by the story of a wheelchairbound man. It was a school presentation by the Rotary Club of Pakenham on a young adult’s journey to independence after being immobile until age 20 that saw 10-year-old Hannah Chard and Jemima Foster, 9, band together to raise money for national charity Wheelchairs for Kids. Hearing the story of the unnamed man, whose lifestyle was heavily restricted until he received a wheelchair from the charity, bringing with it a newfound independence, pulled at Hannah’s heartstrings. “I watched a short clip of him eating upright for the first time in his life,” Hannah said. “It made me sad as I thought about how much he missed out on being a boy and running around with his friends and going to school. “The wheelchair changed his life and gave him better opportunities.” Wanting to make a difference, Hannah shared the story with Jemima who was equally moved by the story. “We both felt very touched by it,” Jemima said. “We are so fortunate yet some people have so very little and we decided we wanted to raise some money for this worthwhile cause.” So at a recent church meeting attended by their mothers, the two put on a supper in return for a donation. With some help from their own pocket money, the girls were excited to raise $100 for the cause. “That’s halfway to giving a disadvantaged child in a poor country a wheelchair and a brighter future,” Jemima said. The girls presented their fundraised cash to the Rotary Club of Pakenham at a meeting in July, hoping for the club to pass it along to the organisation. But the club did one better.

Groundwork laid for big train push Extensive works have been completed on the Pakenham train line to support the introduction of high capacity trains (HCT). The larger, faster trains will operate along the local line from mid-2019 in a bid to improve travel time and commuter comfort. To support the added weight, the Level Crossing Removal Authority undertook intensive works involving the laying of 63 kilometres of new cabling, wiring, pipes and tracks, along the railway during July to “bring the line up to scratch“. The “critical” works saw buses replace local train services for several days. Level Crossing Removal
Authority Project director Brett Summers said locally, a lot of work was able to be achieved during a short period of time. “This has been a very intensive period of works and a highly successful one - we achieved everything we needed to do and more,” Mr Summers said. “If you took every piece of new cable, wiring and new equipment we put in and laid them end to end, it adds up to about 63 kilometres - that’s the same distance as from Melbourne to Pakenham.” Other South East Melbourne train lines have been subject to a number of rail upgrades in the past month. According to the author-
ity, “much-needed” track works were also carried out in Dandenong’s east to help improve reliability around the point where trains from Cranbourne and Pakenham merge into a single line. Berwick train station was also subject to two four-metre platform extensions to allow for the longer HCTs. Workers also installed new lighting and fencing at the station, as well as ramps to improved accessibility for disabled passengers. Wanted on warrants Pakenham residents are being asked to keep an eye out for James Kelly who is wanted on warrants after failing to appear in court. Kelly was scheduled to attend Dandenong Magistrates Court on 19 December 2016 but failed to show. The magistrate has since issued a warrant for his arrest. Police are appealing for public assistance to help locate Cardinia man Mark Kelly. Several warrants have been issued for the 32-yearold’s arrest in regards to traffic offences and failing to appear in court. The transition to university life will be made easier for students at Federation University, Berwick Campus, this semester, thanks to the appointment of student mentors. Six student mentors will provide firsthand experience to mid-year undergraduates in the first five weeks of study, a time when the university said peer support was needed the most. Each mentor is assigned a group of students, and in the first few weeks this semester group catch-ups are held weekly to discuss academic requirements, social activities and available support services. Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Learning and Quality, Professor Marcia Devlin, said student mentors were a great way for undergraduates to talk through any issues or concerns with like-minded students who had been in their shoes. “The student mentor relationship provides a framework for constructive interaction between new students, their mentors and staff to empower them to embrace the challenges and opportunities university life has to offer, ” Professor Devlin said. Nathan Ryan was one of the first students to study the Veterinary and Wildlife Science degree at the new Berwick Campus, and has taken up the role of mentor. He’s excited about the new role, and feels he will be able to make a difference to new students’ transition into uni life. “I’ve been in their position. Starting university can be daunting, but if you are shown where everything is, introduced to the right people, given advice on what supports are available, then it makes the

Repairs still in pipeline By Cam Lucadou-Wells Repairs to a notoriously uneven section of Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road have been delayed due to a “complex” mixture of ground conditions, inadequate drainage and a broken sewer pipe, VicRoads says. The $2.5 million works were expected to start on the road section south of Norfolk Drive by late 2016, subject to investigating the cause. VicRoads metro south east operations director Michael Barker said it was working towards the “best long-term solution” for the road’s repair with Melbourne Water, South East Water and City of Casey. “Repairs to Narre WarrenCranbourne Road are complex due to ground conditions and inadequate drainage.” Mr Barker said works were now expected to start in September after South East Water repaired its pipe on the eastern side of the road. A South East Water spokesman said the 45-metre stretch of sewer main near the road which was damaged by tree roots was “not related to the condition of the road surface”. He expected the pipe to be repaired by this week. The deteriorated road, which was subject to heavy flooding in 2011, had become notorious for

VicRoads reduced the section’s speed limit from 80 km/h to 60 km/h due to safety concerns more than two years ago. Resident Rob Ward, who frequently drives on the road, said it had been a “mess” for years before a promise was made to fix it in 2016. “Putting up (new) speed signs and having the odd speed camera booking motorists is not the answer. “It seems that this government and Casey Council find it easier to put out press releases
and create photo opportunities than to actually get anything done.” Casey mayor Sam Aziz, who voted with councillors to lobby VicRoads to fix the road last year, was frustrated “it has just taken so long”. Cr Aziz said the road’s condition - in combination with a car with questionable steering and travelling at reasonable speed - could cause a “real accident”. “We raised it a year and a half ago, and there still has been no action on it.”

Top priority for forgotten pavilion By Cam Lucadou-Wells What a difference a year makes. After intense lobbying, the dated Jack Thomas Reserve pavilion in Narre Warren North has gone from “disappeared” to No.1 priority on Casey Council’s wish list for the state’s Growing Suburbs Fund. In a report on 18 July, the council stated it planned to build a $3.56 million districtlevel soccer pavilion in 2018’19 with the help of state funding. The project heads a list of seven submitted by Casey to the state’s $50-million, two-year Growing Suburbs Fund program. The reserve’s tenant Berwick City, which is Casey’s largest soccer club, had long suffered in a drab, unheated and cramped 1980s-style pavilion. It had insufficient toilets and no separate change rooms for male and female teams. A delighted Berwick City president Joe Di Iorio said the council was also set to upgrade drainage at two of its routinely flooded pitches. “The club is working very closely with council officers and local councillors, and we’re seeing some positive things about to happen,” Mr Di Iorio said. Casey council listed the pavilion on its 2014-’15 capital works program, but the works had “disappeared” from the list in 2016. At the time, its sport and leisure acting manager Terry Jenvey said Jack Thomas Reserve - as well as the club’s access to Sweeney Reserve - met the

Councillor Rosalie Crestani said she and her then ward councillor Rafal Kaplon had been “smashed” by the wave of lobbying from the 800-plus member club. “I’m really encouraged that the Jack Thomas Reserve is getting such focus. “I’ve seen a turn-around within the council on sport facilities in the north (of Casey). “There’s a dire need - we have 13 clubs with nearly 2500 soccer players (in Casey).” According to Football Federation Victoria, facilities can’t match the surging number of players across the state. In 2016, 11,000 extra players were
taking part in outdoor soccer in Victoria. “We can’t just look at history but at the current usage. Soccer is the fastest growing sport in Victoria,” Cr Crestani said. “There’s a large focus on sport among our multi-ethnic communities. It is quite a universal sport.” Cr Crestani said she was encouraged by talk of greater access by clubs to school playing fields. Jack Thomas Reserve also benefited from the scuttling of Casey’s compulsory acquisition of John Foy’s property in Narre Warren North for a three-pitch soccer facility, she said. Casey was also negotiating with Parks Victoria to use further land at Syd Pargeter Reserve for soccer fields.

When you paint or draw, you can think of nothing else but painting and drawing, says Berwick Art Society president Tony Purcell. “It’s like a therapy,” he says. “Any problems you’ve got they’re gone.” For much of the art society’s 25 years, Mr Purcell has been a part of it, plying his brush and watercolours. He joins up to 30 other visual artists of the group at The Old Cheese Factory, Berwick, each Thursday. According to its mission statement, it is a supportive, strongly social group for all forms of visual art. It’s hub of talk, paint and friendship, Mr Purcell says. “It’s not only a friendly group at Berwick Art Society, but it’s a therapy for them.” The 88-year-old former army major and HR lecturer didn’t start painting until he retired 23 years ago. His realist art often tells a story - just by placing a couple of people or animals within a landscape or a city scene. “People say why not try oils and pastels, but I only have so much life on this planet. I must make use of it to work on the hard one - water colour.” He doesn’t like to sell his work these days, preferring to paint for himself and his family. “You’re (otherwise) selling a little bit of yourself and I’m not happy about that.” In the British and Australian armies, Mr Purcell served in Egypt, Germany, Singapore and the Malayan Emergency. He has now made it his “mantra” or “mission” to establish a stronger arts presence in Casey.

But a city without culture is a city without a soul.” The soon-to-open $125 million Bunjil Place may be that cultural centre where people will come to
view Casey artists’ work, Mr Purcell said. Whether it’s due to the uprise of electronics, he thinks painting has less grip on the younger generation. “I think it will survive. We have very good artists here, Victoria has

Councillor Flannery’s motion to introduce national service to Australians of 18 years of age has definitely raised some eyebrows Australia wide. I applaud Councillor Flannery for the idea around his motion and the discussion it has created, however I must express my vehement disagreement with the proposal of sending Australian youth to national service. Indeed we must be looking at ways to combat crime, substance abuse, violence and mental heath issues in young people, but involuntary conscription to the defence forces is nothing more than a band-aid solution to this complex issue. Firstly, our armed forces have always had a high standard for their recruits and I believe we should continue to be selective in who has the privilege to serve. We cannot expect the armed forces to be able to deal with the issues our disenfranchised and disengaged youth are going through and simultaneously maintain their renowned standards and discipline. Simply taking them off the streets and handing them off to toughen up in the armed forces does not address any of the problems youth face. I appreciate the thought behind the motion, following on from Councillor Flannery’s trip to Israel. I just think that Australian youth face different challenges that need to be overcome with a multi-pronged approach that addresses this complex issue. As a young person myself, I am of the belief we need to invest in youth more, by engaging, consulting and listening to young Australians. We all need better education systems, better access to jobs and training opportunities and overall better support systems for people doing it tough. Perhaps only then will our crime rates decrease. Socially speaking On Wednesday 19 July, the CranbourneBerwick News were first with the story that Casey Council had passed a motion to call on federal politicians to reintroduce mandatory National Service for youth. The story has since gone viral and has been picked up by several major media outlets. National Service is always a polarising issue and here is how our readers reacted to the news: Patrick Wilson: Yes, that will work. Yes, that’s what Casey needs. We don’t need local jobs. We need more housing developments with no infrastructure, jobs or care it seems to support the people they are cramming in. Just before I swallowed my own vomit I’m sure I read that my kids would better off fighting in Iraq. WTF! Jeremy Riley: You’re cooked Flannery, go and do your two years' service and then raise your motion. What about all the kids that have direction and purpose that would be derailed by consignment? The ADF only take about six per cent of applicants as it is and you think they can fix a generation of troubled kids? Meanwhile there’s a pothole on William Thwaites Boulevard if you could tend to real council issues. Sharon McCurdy Clifford: What will be done about the high sexual assault rate of women currently serving in the military? If we plan to send thousands of teenage girls to the Middle East, what protection do
these vulnerable girls have from both the people they are fighting and the bad element in our own military? Will the council be setting up special clinics to help these girls with the physical and mental rehabilitation on their return or is this another social problem they plan to “pray away"? Alan Gordon: Stick to roads rates and rubbish, is it any wonder we pay such high rates, for overseas trips then (they) come back thinking they are federal parliamentarians. This is why local government is not held in high regard as they don’t look after the basics, and always want to go into areas not under their control. Connie Meier: Um, what about the charter for human rights? Pretty sure forcing people to go fight a war against their will is a violation. Maybe try lobbying for tougher sentences for criminals. Vandals spray kids’ bus Arts left By Victoria Stone-Meadows
Parents and staff at an early learning centre in Berwick have been left shocked and appalled after graffiti vandals targeted their minibus. Staff arrived at the Bluebird Early Learning Centre in Berwick at 6.30am on Friday 21 July to find the centre’s minibus, signs and the neighbouring primary school’s signs were covered in tags. Centre manager Catherine Collins said those hit the hardest by this vandalism had been the kids who attended the centre. “It’s pretty upsetting because the children use it for excursions and things like that,� she said. “The kids have been saying “Someone has written on the bluebird bus� and they are pretty upset about it and we can’t use it until it gets fixed.� While the centre hasn’t had to cancel any excursions in the short term, it remains unclear how long it will take for the minibus to be cleaned and usable again. “Everyone is upset and disappointed something like this has happened,� Ms Collins said. “You don’t expect it to happen with something relating to children.� Irate parent Suzie Weeding took to social media to vent her frustration with the unknown vandals. “Tags all over the bus that drops off and picks up kids from schools in the area for before and after school care,� Ms Weeding wrote in a post on the Casey Crime Page on Facebook. “Who does this s***, seriously? My three-year-old son writes better than this you stupid idiots. “It’s pointless. Do it to your own car or your parent’s car and see how that goes.� Police Officers from Narre Warren Police Station are investigating the incident and say they have some promising leads.

A Berwick-based artists’ group has been left out in the cold by Casey Council after its grant funding application rejected at the 11th hour. City of Casey Council unanimously approved their 2017-’18 community grants recipients, with 81 groups sharing in $217,468 of grants this financial year. Council originally received 106 applications for this year’s round of grants requesting $286,554. The list of 81 final recipients was considered at a general council meeting on Tuesday 18 July, where Councillor Timothy Jackson altered the recommendation. The new recommendation removed grant money being awarded to Berwick-based Provenance Artists Inc and allocated it to the Berwick Business Group instead. Cr Jackson said removing Provenance Artists Inc from the list of grants was an unfortunate but necessary decision. “Unfortunately we were at the budgeted level for the grants, therefore something had to come out for any additional funding to occur,� he said. “In discussion with my ward
partner Cr Susan Serey, we felt that it was only fair that if we wanted to add the funding for something in our ward then something in our ward had to come out.� Cr Jackson said as much as he wanted to be able to award grants to many community groups, he had to take budget considerations into account. “The Berwick Business Group hosted a wonderful Christmas event for the community and local business which I attended. This was attended by more than 2500 people,� he said. “While it would be great to be able to fund every event and every community group, it just isn’t feasible to do so.� “I hope that should further money become available, we may be able to fund the art group again.� President of Provenance Artists Inc Calvin Bell was contacted for comment, but declined to do so until he had a chance to speak with the group’s committee of management. The full list of successful community grant applicants will be notified by council in the coming weeks.

Disabled in the workplace By Victoria Stone-Meadows City of Casey Council has made a move to help people living with a disability gain valuable workplace experience and skills to become more independent. At a general council meeting on Tuesday 18 July, Councillor Amanda Stapledon raised a notice of motion that would see council become a job experience provider as part of council’s new Disability Access and Inclusion Policy. The motion calls for council officers and Cr Stapledon to meet with disability education and support providers the Narre Warren Learning and Community Centre and Out-
look Disability Services. Cr Stapledon said she was aiming to set Casey Council up as a provider of workplace experiences for people in the community living with a physical or learning disability. “What I want to see is council providing job placement opportunities for organsations like outlook to give them links for their people in job placements with council and outside of council,” she said. “I envision it would work as a sort of work experience, but where people can learn some skills and gain real life work experience.” Cr Stapledon said getting this project off the

ground would not only be valuable for the people it was geared to help, but also it would benefit council. “People living with a disability have so much to contribute, and this is fantastic way of enabling them to do so while gaining experience and confidence to launch into their own career,” she said. “This plan also has benefits for the whole economy by adding to the wider economy and helping families with things like social isolation and deprivation of finances.” “Isolation can bring about mental illness, so we want to get more people about and about and also give everyone an opportunity to learn about each other.”
While council is in the process of updating their policy in regards to inclusions and access for people with a disability, Cr Stapledon said now was the perfect time to get this project going. “How much better would it feed into the council’s disability plans? We only have to look at the culture and policy moving forward,” she said. “I am really proud of my fellow Casey councillors for supporting this, and officers are going to execute this well. Council officers will meet with Outlook and the Narre Warren Learning and Community Centre over the coming weeks to discuss project options.

The vicar is in the house By Victoria Stone-Meadows The BATS theatre company opened its latest production of the classic British comedy The Vicar of Dibley to an almost full house at the Cranbourne Community Theatre on Friday 21 July. The production brings three episodes of the television show to the stage, with BATS bringing memorable characters to life with their trademark silly humour. In true BATS style, it was obvious the cast and crew had a wonderful time putting the show together and their enthusiasm for their craft and dedication to each other really came through in their performances. Quickly getting through some opening night jitters, the leading cast were engaging to watch and delivered the jokes with a level of absurdity that Dawn French would be proud of. Paired with many references to the titular character’s ample bosom and just the right amount of physical comedy, BATS has managed to really capture the humour of the TV show. BATS made great use of the limited stage space at the theatre and were very clever with the way they managed to pack in so many different scenes and locations into the space. While every member of the cast brought great elements to their characters, there were a few stand-out performances that really brought something special to the stage. Neil Barnett, who played a wonderfully grumpy and conniving David Horton, was a delight to watch and made a very believable character you will love

to hate. His expert input into the set design and construction must also be noted, as well as his gesticulations on stage that added a humorous edge to this antagonist. Another outstanding member of the crew was Jess Zintschenko who played Alice Tinker, the bumbling blonde sidekick to the Vicar. Her over-the-top accent and genuinely funny physical actions on stage really made her character a delight to watch and a particular scene with her ‘kindergarten children’ was a particular success. It’s difficult to decide on a favourite character or moment from this production as it was clear everyone on stage and in the support crew gave it their all to bring the show together. One particularly clever aspect of this production was the inclusion of the Cranbourne Chorale as the choir. The choir was a brilliant way to hold the production together between the episodes while keeping in with the theme of the TV show and providing a musical aspect to the show. President of the BATS Theatre Company Committee Anette Neilson said she was thrilled with the turnout of the crowd on opening night. “We were really pleased with how it went and the audience seemed to enjoy it; we have received a lot of really positive feedback and we are really happy with how things are going,” she said. “We’ve got an amazing crew and performers who are so talented; it’s a great group to work with and the amazing backstage crew that make it all happen.”
The Vicar of Dibley director Susan Bergman said months of hard work by the cast and crew has really paid off and everyone should be very proud of what they had achieved. “Overall I am very pleased; there were a few hiccups on opening night but they have all been tuned and we are raring to go on the next performances, Sunday starting to get close to being soldout,” she said. “It really has been a privilege to get to adapt these three episodes from TV to stage.” “There has been a lot of creativity behind that and it has been quite rewarding; Anette has been absolutely awesome and it is great to give these talented actors the opportunity to give an iconic and wellknown creation a go.” Opening night of the production was dedicated to the late Mick Morland OAM who was a great supporter of community groups while on council. Ms Bergman said she was pleased to be able to give back to the community in the name of Mr Morland, who she said was a great man. “We were honoured that Mick’s wife Kay came along we will be able to put some money towards the Casey Cardinia Foundation in Mick’s name,” she said. “He was one of those ones that looked after the community as whole.” The BATS Theatre Company’s production of the Vicar of Dibley will be on again on Saturday 29 July and a matinee performance on Sunday 30 July, Tickets are still available by calling 0422 096 768 or by visiting www.trybooking.com/274466.

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is increasing attention, scrutiny and education on work-related expenses this tax time. Assistant Commissioner Kath Anderson said that last year over 6.3 million people made a work-related expense claim for clothing and laundry expenses. They totalled almost $1.8 billion. “We have seen claims for clothing and laundry expenses increase around 20 per cent over the last five years. “While this increase isn’t a sign that all of these taxpayers are doing the wrong thing, it is giving us a reason to pay extra attention,” she said. Warriors wounded By Russell Bennett The Pakenham Warriors’ rocky form continued on the weekend with the Big V basketball Division 2 men’s side dropping both of its latest games - to the fourth-placed Southern Peninsula Sharks on Saturday night, and the ladder-leading Collingwood AllStars on Sunday afternoon. Brent Russell’s men were careless with the ball early on Saturday night against the Sharks at Hillview Stadium in Rosebud, leading to a series of quick outlet passes in transition from the home side and some favourable looks on the offensive end. The Warriors were again below full strength in the absence of key big man Brad Bridgewater and shooter Rob Maartens but bounced back later in the quarter thanks in no small part to forward James Topp making the right plays at both ends of the floor, and kick-starting fast-breaks after securing the defensive rebound - leading to strong looks deep in the paint at the other end.
The Warriors then took a 43-40 lead into the half with guard Nick Ross and skipper Ben Gaze adding 11 points apiece, Topp 8, and big man Josh Bjelan 9 - while perfect from the field - but a sluggish third proved costly for the visitors as the Sharks awoke from their slumber. Though the Sharks were held to just 38 per cent shooting in the first half, that number rose to 47 per cent by the end of the contest as they won 9976 off the back of 23 points and seven boards from Corey Bond, 19 points from Ben James, and 16 apiece from Justin Taylor and Riley Emerton. Gaze and Ross finished with 18 apiece for Pakenham. On Sunday, the Warriors found themselves down 16-7 early before bouncing back to trail by five at the end of the first against Collingwood. Bjelan posed all sorts of headaches for the Collingwood big men in the final three quar-
ters - finishing with 23 points, 14 boards and 3 steals - but the home side faded badly in the last, scoring just nine points for the quarter to lose to the All-Stars by 11, 7564, after shooting just 31 per cent from the field. The Warriors’ Youth League Division 2 men’s finals series gets underway this Sunday when the top-of-the-table Pakenham hosts Collingwood from noon at ‘The Colosseum’ at Cardinia Life. Russell’s senior men’s side will play their last two games of the regular season - on Saturday night at Balwyn High School from 6pm against the Camberwell Dragons, and on Sunday from 2pm at Cardinia Life against the Sherbrooke Suns. Darren Thomas’ Youth League 2 women’s side will battle the Sunbury Jets at Boardman Stadium in Sunbury from 8pm this Saturday night. They currently occupy fourth spot on the ladder with 11 wins from their 19 games so far this season.

If AFL South East Region General Manager John Anderson is looking for the poster boy for divisional football - he should look no further than ROC/Officer champion Ben Tivendale. A premiership player in just his third season at the club in 2002, the 36-year-old is about to complete his 13th consecutive season without a finals appearance. Finals are definitely within reach for his club, but a premiership - well that’s a different story. “It’s a great test playing the Berwicks and Cranbournes of this world, but it’s hard for a club like ours to compete against them,” the 300-gamer said. “And it’s getting more and more predictable as the years go by, you start asking yourself will it be Berwick or Cranbourne this year, and Narre Warren might not be as strong as they once were but they’ve been a powerhouse for years as well.” Tivendale still loves the game, but thinks the lure of success would go a long way towards improving the vibe at struggling clubs. “The rest of us are playing because we love football, but deep down we know we’re not going to challenge for a premiership anytime soon,” he said. “It makes it hard for supporters, volunteers, knowing nothing is going to happen. Invincibles scrape through By David Nagel Berwick’s quest for the perfect season remains intact - but only just - after the Wickers kicked two late goals to sink a brave Doveton by four points, 10.11(71) to 10.7(67), at Edwin Flack Reserve on Saturday. Trailing by 10 points at three-quarter time, the Doves took advantage of a strong breeze, kicking the first three goals of the final term to lead by nine points at the 24-minute mark. Berwick’s 12-game winning streak appeared over, but a classy finish from Lucas Jellyman-Turner cut the margin to three. Jayden Graham then narrowly missed his opportunity to be the hero before running half back Luke Sheppard received a handball from Graham to kick the winner from 15 metres out at the 30-minute mark. His thoughts were swirling as he ran into goal. “I was crapping my pants to be honest,” Sheppard said shortly after the victory. “It was a clean tap on by Gunny (Tim Gunn), then (Jayden) Graham gave me the hands and it was pretty straight forward in the end, but very nerve racking.” The Wickers have been dominant in recent times, but it took a completely different skill set to get across the line against the Doves. “We’ve been travelling alright; beating teams convincingly, but today was our first real challenge to see how we would respond under real pressure,” Sheppard said. “Doveton took it to us for pretty much the whole game, they pressed forward real well, their midfield got on top of ours I thought, but just to dig deep, when we hadn’t had that opportunity this year, to do that was really pleasing.” Harry Money kicked three in his first game for the season for the winners, while skipper Madi Andrews joined Sheppard and Jayden Joyce as his sides’ best performers. Seagulls home in late rally By David Nagel Tooradin-Dalmore has reminded everyone in the South East Football Netball League of its true premiership credentials with a gutsy come-from-behind victory over a brave Beaconsfield on Saturday. The Seagulls were blown off the court by the fired-up Eagles in the first quarter, before regaining composure to triumph 45-42 in one of the games of the season. The Eagles were brilliant early, relishing the return of Rylee Nelson (centre) to the midcourt they opened up a 14-9 lead at quarter time. Taylah Jencke (goal keeper) and Dani Cameron (goal defence) were keeping the Seagulls goalers under wraps while Ash Gill (wing attack) and Kate Murphy (wing defence) were busy by Nelson’s side. They maintained their fivegoal advantage at half time before the Seagulls, like great teams do, decided to lift the tempo when it mattered most. The move of Sara Duncan to centre, and Alex Maher (goal shooter) to the number-one target under the ring, changed the complexion of the match, with the Seagulls cutting the margin to one with a 13-9 third quarter.
Maher scored 11 of her team’s goals, benefiting from the wonderful work of Jess Cox (GA), Emma Iacovou (WA) and Ebony Dolan (WD), while Bec Kinna (GD) raised her game in defence. The Seagulls had the momentum and surged ahead with a 1410 final term to claim a memorable victory. Back-to-back champions Narre Warren welcomed back some serious talent for its 51-29 victory over Cranbourne. Gabby Dwyer, Tayla Shannon and Chloe Phillips returned to the attacking end of the court, while Kara Hargrave shored up an already impenetrable defensive unit. The Magpies were brutal with their defence in the first half, allowing Cranbourne goalers Tegan Stahl, Alanah Hardy and Tahlia Coates just 10 goals to half time. Doveton is about to embark on the toughest run home of any team in the competition after a 5941 victory over Berwick at Edwin Flack Reserve. The fourth-placed Doves face Tooradin, Beaconsfield, Narre Warren and Cranbourne over the coming weeks, the perfect test ahead of finals. The Doves looked a different
unit with quality goaler Rahni Samason (GS) in their side, the VNL star scoring 45 goals for the afternoon. Her work was made easier by the great feeds of Liz Edwards and Hayley Stewart, while Mel Webster (GD) and Leah Seeto (WD) kept things tightly sealed in defence. Berwick’s youngsters will learn a lot from the outing, particularly Madelina Nyoul (GK) who played the majority of the game on Samason, while Bec Langford (GD) and Renee Gill (WD) also worked hard to stop the flow. And ROC won its first game since round three with a 55-28 victory over Pakenham. The Kangaroos dominated the contest for all but one quarter, when the Lions scored 12 to 13 in the second term. The Kangas gained great drive from Ash Barnett (C) in the middle, while Sam Neil (GA), Olivia Hamilton (WA), Mel Overdyk (GK) and Laura Quinn (GD) stuck to their guns for the full duration of the match. The Lions remain winless, but players like Keely Wright (GD), Carly Saunders (GA), Christine Meyer (GS) and Katrina Meredith (C/WA) are trying hard to gain that first elusive win. The Kangaroos have now won back-to-back games and travel to Beaconsfield this week to celebrate the 300th senior game of club legend Ben Tivendale. The 36-year-old star will join his childhood hero Robbie Young, and former team-mates Mick Moylan and Kable Dowsett on the club’s most illustrious honour roll. The seven-time best and fairest winner, who bleeds blue and white, said it was a great honour to join Young, Moylan and Dowsett in a quartet of
high achievers. “It’s a pretty special achievement I suppose,” he said. “I remember coming here when I was seven or eight years old and watching Robbie Young; he was a legend, and I got to play senior footy with him. I played a lot with Mick and a bit with Kable as well, so to reach a milestone that only three other blokes have achieved - I’m very proud of it. It’s a lot of footy to play, especially with the one club.”

Take this Mazda on a tour By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring Mazda CX-5 has been a hit in Australia since it arrived here just over five years ago. Now the second generation has been introduced. It features interesting style, improvements to the powertrains and uprated technology. A new Touring model has been added to the CX-5 range. Style was one of the big selling features of the original Mazda CX-5. The new one carries the same overall theme, but with a smoothing out of the lines, almost to the extent of being minimalistic. The CX-5’s upright grille is bold, with the upper and lower areas matching neatly. The doors have sculpting in their lower areas and the C-pillar treatment is interesting. However we feel that the rear lights are rather small. The CX-5’s instruments are sporty in their layout, clear and easy to use. Infotainment from the Mazda MZD Connect system is accessed through a seven-inch full-colour touchscreen. There's AM and FM, as well as DAB+ radio. Connectivity is by Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio, Aux, and USB. Control is through steering wheel buttons for many functions, there’s also Mazda’s handy Commander ro-

The central screen is a good size and has Mazda's attention to minimisation of driver distraction. Satellite navigation is optional on the CX-5 Maxx but standard on all other variants. At a time when some companies are offering little or no choice of drivetrains, Mazda has a large suite. Though based on the powerplants of the superseded CX-5, they have significant improvements. All use Mazda’s unusual SkyActiv technology. A 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol has 114 kW, and 200 Nm at a highish 4000 rpm. There’s also a 2.5-litre petrol producing 140 kW, and 251 Nm, again at
4000 rpm. Both engines are naturallyaspirated rather than turbocharged, which probably explains why then need plenty of revs to get the torque to its peak. Mazda Australia has again specified the petrol engines be detuned slightly to suit Australia’s low-grade 91 octane standard petrol. A 2.2-litre turbo-diesel puts out up to 129 kW of power, with 420 Nm of torque at 2000 revs. A six-speed manual is on offer with the smaller petrol engine, all others have a six-speed automatic transmission. Our test CX-5 Touring had the larger petrol engine, automatic transmission and AWD, which is likely to be the most popular combination. All CX-5 models have six airbags, automatic emergency braking, smart city braking, blind spot monitoring, front and rear and rear cross traffic alert and a rear view camera that's backed up by rear parking sensors.
There’s comfortable seating inside for four adults, with a fifth being possible without too much hip and shoulder rubbing. However, it’s very much a 40:20:40 layout and may not suit all those in the centre seat if they are on the wide side. Rear seat legroom may prove marginal if a tall person sits behind a driver more than about 1.7 meters tall. The back seats can be set at two angles to let you juggle luggage/ passenger space. Large armrests are a feature we really liked in the front seats. Boot volume, at 442 litres, is almost 10 per cent greater than in the superseded CX-5. A spacesaver wheel/ tyre is used to give added depth to the boot. The area is easy to load and the rear seatbacks can be lowered by using levers in the load area. Ride comfort is impressively smooth on smooth roads and still better than average when the surfaces deteriorate. Mazda's second generation CX-5 is an impressive piece of engineering.
