a message from the mayor
ANOTher DAY iN pArADiSe A GOOD day for me starts with an early surf at one of the many breaks on Noosa headland. Looking north across Laguna Bay, stretching to the horizon, is Cooloola, the largest vegetated sandmass on the planet. Looking back to shore there is the stunning beauty of Noosa National Park. I give silent thanks to those early environmentalists in the 1960s who cannily thwarted a proposed coastal road around this magnificent headland. It could so easily have become just another coastal strip of high-rise buildings and concrete. Instead it is Queensland’s most visited national park. Having caught my share of classic right-handers, I head back to shower and begin my workday. Often on the walk back to the carpark I will pass a group of tourists craning their necks to view a dozy koala. Council is tasked with custodianship of the very values that make Noosa so attractive. The lack of big city symbols, the integration of built and natural environments, and the laidback village feel are the elements that make Noosa special. There are very few places on the planet with such a winning mix of perfect climate, engaged community, cultural sophistication and aweinspiring landforms. And if we should meet, dear reader, and you happen to notice the bruises on my arms, you will understand that every day I pinch myself as a reminder of just how lucky I am. AN icONic STreTch Of rOAD NOW a world-famous street bursting with highend restaurants and boutique retail stores, Hastings Street was once a quiet beachside hideaway with a few shops in the dunes, some homes and a caravan park at the Spit. Hastings Street served as a base for the Royal Australian Artillery in 1943, the road was first sealed in 1958, the first bank appeared in 1963 and in 1972 Noosa Shire Council deemed high rise development inappropriate on what is now the region’s most iconic stretch of road. The Noosa Parks Association, Noosa’s largest environmental lobby group, fought Government plans to build a road through what is now the coastal track of the Noosa National Park, and it was a culmination of all these events that created the Hastings Street millions enjoy today. Here, you can find award-winning restaurants, boutique retail stores offering clothing, jewellery and homewares, sidewalk cafes, funky eateries, five-star accommodation and of course, entrance to Noosa Main Beach. At the opposite end of Hastings Street is the Spit, a public park with views over the waterways, plenty

JuNcTiON’S NOw A prime DeSTiNATiON NOOSA Junction was born from two dirt roads intersecting and historically the locale was better known as a thoroughfare than a destination. In the 1950s the first shop opened on the street, it was a plumber’s workshop, but the centre quickly expanded and is now home to over 200 stores. Formerly the business hub of Noosa, the Junction now offers a wide range of services and facilities from modern co-working spaces, quirky retail stores, on-trend cafes and plenty restaurants. The Junction is also home to the BCC Cinemas, as well as the council-run entertainment venue The J and excellent Twilight Markets (see page 21 for more information on markets). You can also grab a juice, a new dress, luxury homewares and a haircut. With two major shopping centres, the much-loved Village Bicycle bar and restaurant and a plethora of cafes, the Junction is a must-see when visiting the shire. OpTiONS AbOuND DOwN bY The river The Noosa River foreshore is a favourite place for families to relax.
SOMETIMES affectionately referred to as Hastings Street’s younger sister, Gympie Terrace offers a less-crowded alternative to the region’s iconic street. The wide range of dining options along Gympie Terrace is just as impressive, with a varied selection including the historical Maisies Seafood and Steakhouse to the region’s only floating restaurant, cool cafes, funky tapas bars and everything in between. You will also find gorgeous boutique retail stores, a beautiful riverside bookstore and plenty of day spas. But the main attraction is surely the Noosa River foreshore. Teeming with families and thrill seekers, the foreshore is the best place to come for all things on the water from jet ski hire to pontoon boat hire, fishing, kayaking and, of course, fish and chips at one of the parks. There are a number of playgrounds for the kids, sandy beaches for wading in the warm water, a riverside path that runs the length of the street and lots of tables for picnics. A Nice mix Of OlD AND New LOCATED right on the banks of Noosa River is the charming town of Tewantin. Formerly the centre of the Noosa Shire, Tewantin is now home to a beautiful mix of original pioneer homes and luxury riverside abodes. The town centre boasts the Tewantin Noosa RSL and the Royal Mail Hotel that was built in 1882, plus all the major services - from the bank to the doctors, the supermarket and council chambers. There are plenty of family activities on offer, including the memorial park, water park and skate bowl for the kids. Don’t forget the Noosa Marina - with cafes, restaurants and weekend markets every Sunday from 8-2pm. You can also catch the ferry from the Noosa Marina or jump aboard a sunset cruise to experience the market or Noosa River at twilight.

cOOl, relAxeD vibe AT SuNShiNe HOME to some of Noosa’s most prestigious homes, Sunshine Beach is a cool coastal town with a relaxed vibe. The main road, Duke Street, is home to an eclectic mix of restaurants from the high-end Embassy XO to the ubercool Sum Yung Guys, the foodies haven Dukes Deli and family-friendly Sunshine Beach Surf Club. The pristine sands of Sunshine Beach is the perfect place to enjoy the sunshine and surfers like to take to the waves here. For families, there are parklands and a playground behind the surf club, plus lots of coastal walking tracks that will take you north or south to the region’s other beautiful beaches. Those who appreciate coastal architecture will certainly enjoy a drive through most Sunshine Beach’s back streets with some simply stunning luxury homes perched on the surrounding hills.

hiNTerlAND LOCATED just a short, scenic drive north of Cooroy are the Hinterland townships of Pomona and Kin Kin. Pomona offers a great local art gallery housed in the former railway station, a wide range of cafes, a huge park perfect for families and great vintage, retro shops for treasure hunting. If you visit the town in July, you’ll see the annual King of the Mountain race up Mount Cooroora, which also makes a challenging but rewarding hike for those who love getting outdoors. Head another 15 minutes north to Kin Kin, where an afternoon tea of cheese scones at the Kin Kin General Store is highly recommended. Pick up some Kin Kin Tea and natural cleaning products, drop into the historic pub for a drink and make sure you have a look at Steve Weis’ sound garden gallery on Gympie Kin Kin Road on the way out.

KNOWN to locals as the heart of the hinterland, Cooroy is a charming country township located about 20 minutes from Noosa Heads. Cooroy is made up of one main thoroughfare - Maple Street - where you can find the Cooroy Library, Cooroy RSL, and a range of historical shop fronts. A quAint country chArmer WHILE Eumundi isn’t officially within the Noosa Shire, many locals consider the historical town an extension of the shire. You won’t find a major supermarket here, nor a petrol station, but you will find lots of country charm, exceptional markets and some of the most unique stores in the region. Eumundi swells with visitors every Wednesday and Saturday for the Original Eumundi Markets, where everything on offer has been baked, made or sewn by hand. But it’s the quieter days in between when visitors can truly appreciate this town. There’s a big playground for the kids, plus a selection of cute coffees shops. We recommend trying every single one. Berkelouw Book Store, with a plethora of gorgeous books and that special book smell is a must-see, along with the Imperial Hotel with its beer garden, live music and unique interior decor. Joe’s Waterhole provides live music, the Bohemian Bungalow is the place to go for top nosh, and there are many gorgeous, unique, quicky shops to explore. If Eumundi isn’t on your to-do list while in Noosa, make sure you add it.

Peregian Beach Markets On the first and third Sunday of every month at Kingfisher Park in Peregian Beach, these markets are as relaxed as the rest of Peregian Village. The beachside markets have been operating for more than 20 years and have a focus on art and craft, upcycled clothing as well as fresh fruit and vegetables.

There is live music and tables and chairs to sit back, have a meal and enjoy the ambience. noosa twilight Market On the third Friday of the month the Noosa Junction comes alive with the Noosa Twilight Market. Held on Arcadia Street from 5-9pm, the markets are a haven for foodies, with plenty fo street food vans, artisan stalls and live music on offer. Yandina Markets Held each Saturdays at Wonga Park, North Street in Yandina, these country markets are filled with everything from plants to second hand treasures to fresh food. the original euMundi Markets If you’re looking for artworks, sculptures or homemade items, you must visit the Eumundi Markets on Saturdays from 7am-2pm and Wednesdays from 8am-1.30pm. This large market takes over the quaint town. There’s a variety of food to eat, fresh produce to take home and you’ll find entertainers, face painters and masseurs. These markets are very popular and attract bus tours from across south east Queensland.

where greeN iS gOlD LOCATED just a short drive from Cooroy on the shores of Lake Macdonald, the Noosa Botanic Gardens are a beautiful and peaceful place to spend an afternoon. Wander the Garden’s eighthectares of native and exotic plant species and spot wildlife bounding through the bush. The Gardens are also a popular wedding site, with an openair bush chapel, along with a fern house, lily pond, children’s playground and a Greek-style amphitheatre with breathtaking views over Lake Macdonald. Originally farmland, council took on the land in the 1950s but it was local resident Ida Duncan who had the vision to turn the site into the stunning gardens they are today. After officially opening in 1990, the place is now lovingly cared for by staff and the Friends of Noosa Botanic Gardens who can often be found in the gardens offering tours for visitors. Families, green thumbs and wildlife enthusiasts alike will enjoy a visit to the Noosa Botanic Gardens.

The river Of mirrOrS KNOWN as the river of mirrors, the Noosa Everglades are a pristine natural environment bursting with wildlife. lAY iN recOrD NumberS WHILE tourists flock to Mon Repos in the Bundaberg region to view turtle hatchlings, few know that Noosa is a growing turtle nesting area, which this year celebrated record egg laying. Between mid-November and mid-March coast carers reported 27 loggerhead hatchings and one green turtle hatching.
Spokesperson Sherida Holford said turtles laid an average of 130 eggs and one loggerhead laid an astounding 196 eggs at North Peregian. Turtles lay at night between Noosa Main Beach and Maroochydore North Shore and the young usually hatch at night.
For the first time a green turtle was recorded laying her eggs on Noosa Main Beach.
The carers keep a check on the nests and after 60 days monitor them morning and night for hatchlings. They counted 3009 this season.
Coolum and North Shore Coast Carers monitor the season and are assisted by beach walkers who regularly alert them to the turtles.
The data collected by the group is collated and updated to the Queensland Marine Turtle database for use for scientific research.

MORE than one million people visit the stunning 4000-hectares of Noosa National Park each year - walking its trails, spotting wildlife and enjoying the breathtaking scenery. The Park includes sections surrounding Lake Weyba, Peregian and Coolum, with the main entrance at Noosa Heads the most popular place for visitors to start exploring its natural beauty. It offers kilometres of walking tracks of all grades - from hard to easy and wheelchair accessible tracks at Noosa Heads. Walkers can take in a range of native flora and if you look closely you might even spot a resident koala. A favourite walk for locals and visitors alike is from the end of Noosa Main Beach along the boardwalk, past Little Cove and on to the Park’s main entrance. You just can’t go past our iconic First Point on Noosa Main Beach as one our region’s most outstanding suring spots. This right-hand point break is perfect for longboards when it’s clean and small but when it’s iring, it truly is a world class wave. Watch out for the sharp rocks on low tide and be prepared to wait your turn at the point while you watch some top notch suring from the locals. A short walk to Tea Tree Bay through our National Park is simply magic and considered as one of the most beautiful places in the world. Less crowded (or more spaced out perhaps) than First Point, this is one special surf break. With the National Park in the background, surrounded by pandanus palms, rocky headlands and water so clear you can see the bream swimming around your feet, you will lose track of time out here. A clean and long right hand point break, Tea Tree is worth carrying that longboard out to. The Groyne is an under-rated Noosa surf break and ofers a nice reprieve from the crowds. Nestled in between the two rock walls on
Noosa Main Beach, take a stroll down the end of Hastings Street to The Groyne and you might ind a nice little peak or two out in the deeper water, or perhaps even a sneaky little peeler of the middle rock wall. Depending on the banks, the Groyne can be a heavy close-out, but with the right conditions, it can ofer a few great wave options to the Points. There are some fantastic surf schools set up here to try out your skills or hire a board away from the corwds at First Point. ■
Granite Bay is an advanced surfer’s paradise. Walking through the National Park, past the koalas and through the forest brings you to a right hander with more power and size than the others. In the right conditions, it can really ire.
■
We have an endless stretch of open beach starting from Sunshine Beach and meandering south. These open beaches have loads of banks which work and plenty of vantage points to drive along and make your pick of the peaks. Short boarders will ind a fun wave most mornings with the right winds and with a bit of swell, the sets can get pretty big and solid.
