Watch out for signs

Lakeside Pakenham residents are celebrating the installation of their Neighbourhood Watch signs after almost a year of lobbying. Purchased by the Lakeside Residents Group (LRG) thanks to a generous donation by the Pakenham Racing Club, the signs are now standing tall in the entry of Lakeside, near Lakeside Primary School and Aldi supermarket following installation by Cardinia Shire Council. LRG member Wendy Andrews the signs were important as they let the general public know “we’re not only part of the Neighbourhood Watch group, but also that we are a community that cares and looks out for each other”.

Light the lights! McGregor Road’s pedestrian crossing lights should be flashing within the month, following a seven-month holdup since their installation. The lights, just outside the Heritage Springs Shopping Centre, were installed at the beginning of 2017 following community lobbying and were expected to be operating by the commencement of the school year.

A Cardinia Shire report in identified the project as a “major priority” which would “significantly improve the safety of pedestrians, including schoolchildren, at this location”. However, seven months later the signals still remain dormant. Local driving instructor Elaina Haig, who was instrumental in getting the lights installed, doesn’t understand the hold-up.

Ms Haig has been contacting the relevant bodies since the start of the year in a bid for answers, but said all involved parties - Cardinia Shire Council, AusNet and VicRoads - had “pointed the finger” at each other. She wants to see the light’s activation on the busy 70km/h road as soon as possible, “before somebody gets killed”. “I just don’t get why it’s taking so long. They’re sitting there ready to go -

switch them on,” Ms Haig said. An AusNet spokeswoman said preliminary works on the lights to make them ready for activation had been completed by the power company, and Cardinia Shire Council had been informed of the works. “It is now up to the council to notify us when they want the lights turned on,” the spokeswoman said. Cardinia Shire Council’s team lead-

er of engineering, Cathal O’Loughlin, said council had requested AusNet connect power to the signals following their installation in January. Activation is expected within the month, according to the council. “AusNet services has confirmed they will have a contractor attending the site to complete their component of works, after which VicRoads will finalise the works to make the lights operational,” Mr O’Loughlin said.

College tree planting event By Kyra Gillespie Berwick Toyota is teaming up with the staff and pupils of Beaconhills College to dig in and celebrate the 22nd year of Planet Ark’s Schools Tree Day on Friday 28 July. Marking this special occasion, the Beaconhills College community and Berwick Toyota staff will get their hands dirty with planting activities at the school, as part of what has become Australia’s largest community tree planting and nature care event. Not-for-profit environmental foundation, Planet Ark, has again partnered with Toyota and its extensive national dealer network to get both communities and schools across Australia involved in the initiative. Through Schools Tree Day and National Tree Day, Planet Ark and Toyota hope to create a society in which people understand the value of their environment. Berwick Toyota has been doing the National Tree Day with Beaconhills College for the past seven years. It’s a kinder revolution By Bonny Burrows A fight to have Cardinia Shire restart its kinder management tender process has not ended, despite councillors overturning a management decision on one of the chosen organisations. It was standing room only at Cardinia Shire Council’s 17 July general meeting, where parents and current Cardinia Shire early years provider Kinders Together staff turned out in protest at council’s “deeply flawed” expression of interest (EOI) process, which did not involve community engagement. They argue the process should be restarted to include parent and staff feedback, and were hoping councillors would vote to halt the process and go back to the drawing board to ensure the community’s voice was heard. But to their dismay, the three-hour debate instead saw councillors support a motion by Councillor Ray Brown to appoint Glenn Waverly-based organisation Bestchance as the manager of the three centres previously allocated to Western Australia-based organisation One Tree. The decision to cut One Tree as a provider came following community and councillor concern that local jobs would be lost to interstate workers and child safety could be compromised. One Tree was subject to state tribunal disciplinary action in 2016, after a staff member was found to have not adequately cared for a child at once of its centres. Cardinia Shire Deputy Mayor Jodie Owen said the local community “had concerns, and that in turn made me concerned”, however she didn’t feel restarting the tender process would necessarily change its outcome. Cr Owen, along with councillors Brown, Graeme Moore, Leticia Wil-

However the mayor, Cr Springfield and councillors Collin Ross and Carol Ryan thought otherwise, arguing the council owed the community more. “As a father myself with a child who goes to kindergarten ... I won’t be supporting this process,” the mayor said.

“With such big change like this, you need to bring the community with you. If you can’t get it right, you can’t get the end result right.” Despite this, majority won and the motion was passed to overturn Cardinia Shire CEO Garry McQuillan’s original awarding of the tenders. Instead of recommencing the process, Mr McQuillan will renegotiate the award of the EYM so that Bestch-

ance manages 16 of the shire’s kindergartens, and Early Childhood Management Services (ECMS) manages the under-construction Gum Scrub Creek Early Years Centre. He will also negotiate job security as a priority with Bestchance, signalling it was looking to retain current Kinders Together staff. The decision left the public gallery in tears.

Kinders Together parent and staff advocacy group Keep Our Kinders Together have refused to give up their fight for a “fair process”, with its members declaring they “don’t accept” council’s decision. The group is now working with local State Government representatives Brian Paynter and Brad Battin to determine possible options to further appeal the decision.

Best search Sixty-five businesses are in the running for this year’s Casey Cardinia Business Awards. A total of 94 applications were received for the awards, which are now in their fourth year. City of Casey economic development manager David Wilkinson said 28 businesses had applied for two categories while a further 47 businesses had been nominated for the people’s choice award bringing the total number of applicants and nominees to 141. Mr Wilkinson said he was pleased by the number of new businesses that were engaging with the awards for the first time.

“Twenty-eight businesses are new nominees. That means there are a healthy number of brand new businesses applying for the awards,” Mr Wilkinson said. He also welcomed the strong interest in the people’s choice award, which attracted close to 4500 votes. “The surprisingly strong interest in the people’s choice award means there is interest being generated at a community level in the whole awards program.” At a business awards sponsors’ meeting on Tuesday, Mr Wilkinson announced a threeyear extention of the business partnership program between

the two councils, which includes the annual business awards. “We have extended the partnership for another three years, but I suspect it will go on a lot longer than that,” Mr Wilkinson said. “A Casey Cardinia regional approach is much better for business than the two councils working separately.” The award finalists will be announced at a business breakfast on Wednesday 6 September. Winners will be announced at a gala dinner on Friday 27 October.

Never-ending grief Few understand the damage wreaked on a victim of crime, says a stoic advocate. “It’s a grief that never ends,” says Victims Of Crime Assistance League (VOCAL) founder and secretary Jenny Newman - who calls for more compensation, more guidance and simply more care. She relates strongly to the lonely plight of Berwick residents ‘Anne’ and ‘Beth’ whose lives remain shattered after a brutal assault more than a decade ago, as reported in Star News. Ms Newman says there are not enough support services to help victims. Some victims simply don’t all get directed to support in the first place. No longer do police provide a liaison officer, Ms Newman said. It isn’t mandatory for police to guide victims to the right services, though many do out of their own accord. The early moments are vital, but too many times, victims have rung Ms Newman’s volunteer group VOCAL weeks down the track after fumbling through Google for help. “It’s simple things that matter. You need your family and friends ... but no one understands what you’re going through like someone who’s walked in your shoes.” VOCAL organise with the local council to get Meals On Wheels delivered for as long as possible, so a person doesn’t have to worry about shopping and feeding a family. Or ringing the electricity and credit card companies for leniency over lapsed bills. It allows the family to “shut down”, take time from work, deal

The group operates without government funding. Ms Newman’s goal is to open a VOCAL House where victim families can live and be cared for during the harrowing court trials, or victims can drop in for after-hours support. “These are important things that the government doesn’t rate as important. “We try to operate our own lives at the same time. But we keep going because it’s important.” Ms Newman has walked in the shoes of many victims, isolated and wrecked emotionally and financially. Ms Newman’s 18-month-old granddaughter was tortured and killed in Queensland in 2001. The girl’s mother and her then-partner were jailed for manslaughter and torture but the fall-out never ends, says Ms Newman.

The Queensland system paid no compensation to the surviving grandson, since he wasn’t a dependant of his killed sister. Ms Newman looked after the grandson, fought for funding for his autistic needs and set up VOCAL to support other victims of crime. She also lost her job and set up her own real estate firm. “We lost a house payment because we couldn’t fight the courts ... there was no support there. “Why is the victim punished as well as grieving for the loss of loved ones? All because of something that happened which they had no part in.” Ms Newman says victim impact statements shouldn’t be used just as a healing process, so victims can just “say how they feel”. It should be a means of ensuring they get the type of support they need, for as long as they need.

In the worst cases, victims’ lives are utterly destroyed. They lose their job and hence income, their home and their mental well-being. The state-funded assistance scheme, which caps medical and counselling payments at $60,000, was inadequate, she says. The scheme and its tribunal is under review by the State Government. “There’s no compensation that will fix anything, no jail term that will make it easier. “But why should we be punished with a lack of income, a lack of housing, a lack of mental health support?” Funds should be clawed back from criminals who benefit financially from tales of their offending. “Where is the body that grabs those funds and puts them where they should be - in victims hands? “There’s still way too much emphasis, support and publicity given to perpetrators and not victims of crime. “We know who the perpetrators are, but we rarely remember those suffering on the other side.” In that regard, she agrees with calls by the State Opposition that victims should get compensation from offenders’ superannuation. Political parties may be slow to recognise the issue, but Ms Newman still remembers family and friends too embarrassed to talk about it. “They are things that people don’t want to think about because ‘there but for the grace of God’, it would be them.” “It keeps stunting you, whereas if people embrace you, it can give you a better chance of moving forward.”

Cash found among Opinion donated items Spine needed

By Victoria Stone-Meadows Police are looking for someone who may have donated more than what was intended to a charity donation store in Cranbourne last week. A quantity of cash was found among many other items that were donated to a charity store on High Street, Cranbourne, between Thursday 13 July and Saturday 15 July. The honest staff at the store discovered the money while sorting out items, and handed it over to the Cranbourne police station. Police are attempting to find the owner of the money, and anyone who may have donated goods and accidentally left the cash behind is urged to contact Cranbourne police station on 5991 0600.

On Wednesday 12 July, the Cranbourne-Berwick News Facebook Page shared the news that the developer of the proposed Cranbourne Cinema was not backing away from his plans, despite planning applications being held up by bandicoots. Always a popular point of discussion in the Cranbourne community, the cinema has been in the pipeline for years as the old swimming pool building becomes more and more decrepit. The story post attracted a lot of attention to our Facebook page and here is how our readers reacted: Katie Walker: Is it really going to happen? Better off using the property that was once Masters; been vacant a long while. Judie Hedrick: Obviously the council doesn’t want it to go ahead and I’m not surprised. To suggest people park at the turf club and have to walk along that unlit area is just ridiculous. Bandicoots can be relocated in the safety of our beautiful Botanical Gardens! Emma Gainsford: So many things the council seems to be behind in for the area based on the rate they are approving new housing estates. Entertainment for the area, cinema would be a great start. Pope Tawadros II - branded as the ‘Pope of Hope’ - is set to receive the keys to the City of Casey while visiting the region’s 2000-strong Coptic diaspora. The religious leader who has preached peace while under violent attack in Egypt will be making his first visit to Australia later this year, with tight security precautions. His Holiness is expected to perform a consecration service at St Mina and St Marina Coptic Orthodox Church in Hallam and to lay a foundation stone at a nearby elderly hostel in September. Casey Mayor Sam Aziz said councillors had unanimously voted to bestow the city’s highest honour to His Holiness. The vote was pulled into closed council at the 4 July meeting due to security concerns ahead of the visit, Cr Aziz said. Only on Palm Sunday, 9 April, the Pope escaped unscathed when a cathedral in Egypt was bombed just after his service and 17 people were killed. ISIS took responsibility for that attack. “The fact that those creatures of ISIS state that Coptic Christians are their favourite pursuit demonstrates how barbaric they are,” Cr Aziz said. “We have been working very co-operatively with Australian Federal Police and Victoria Police to ensure the visit

is secure.” Cr Aziz described the visit as “massive” for the hundreds of Coptic parishioners in Casey. His Holiness was an inspiration, who even in the most trying of situations delivered a message of ‘forgive your enemy’, he said. After the burning of 50 churches, Pope Tawadros II had said if there were no more churches, Coptic Christians would pray with their brothers and sisters in the mosques. “He said: ‘A nation without churches is a lot better than churches without a nation’,” Cr Aziz recalled. “It was absolutely amazing from a man under so much pressure.” Professor Greg Barton, a global Islamic politics expert at Deakin University, said the security precautions were necessary. The concerns were the “relentless round” of sectarian violence against Copts by groups such as the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, as well as the executions by ISIS. The Palm Sunday atrocity was followed by the mass killing of Coptic pilgrims in May. “I’m not surprised that they’re taking a careful approach,” Professor Barton said of the Australian visit. “That means there’s a possibility that some people in the broader (community) of nonCopts will be disruptive but also some with sympathies with

Ice and a hot temper By Cam Lucadou-Wells An ice-smoking driver has rearended her boyfriend's car during a hot-tempered and intoxicated pursuit in Narre Warren. Amina Zjajo, 28, and her partner had been smoking ice at home throughout the day before breaking into an argument in the early hours of an August morning last year, Dandenong Magistrates' Court heard. When the partner drove off, Zjajo followed in a gold Audi at about 80km/h on Tinks Road, police alleged. She collided into the rear of his vehicle as he slowed down at the entry of the Monash Freeway on-ramp. His car then spun around, skidded about 30 metres into the wrong lane and struck a traffic pole. Zjajo's car came to rest against her partner's car. She was taken by ambulance to Dandenong Hospital for mouth injuries. Her blood sample tested positive for methamphetamine - something she smoked as a means of self-medication for depression, she told police. At the time, Zjajo's licence was suspended due to excessive speed, Senior Constable Jimma Jeffs told the court. It was her seventh such offence in the past two years, including receiving a

Magistrate Timothy Bourke said Zjajo was facing a month in jail for her prolific suspended-driving record. "What doesn't she understand from coming to court just a month earlier?" Defence lawyer Emma Strugnell submitted for a community corrections order to tackle the accused's ice and mental health issues, given her relative youth and not having benefited from CCO programs before. It would benefit Zjajo and reduce her risk to the community, Ms Strugnell said.

Mr Bourke warned that Zjajo couldn't expect leniency if she hadn't sought help for her condition. He noted she was involved in a serious car accident while affected by ice and driving suspended for the seventh time one month after being in court. "I accept that you suffer from schizophrenia and other mental health issues, but you're the person who ultimately controls that. "The courts are now on notice that you are aware of your mental health issues." As an alternative to jail, Zjajo was convicted and placed on a 12-month supervised CCO with treatment, rehab and 100 hours of unpaid work. She was disqualified from driving for six months.

Prompt excision result Squamous cell carcinomas are the second most common skin cancers in Australia after basal cell carcinomas, according to Dr Mike Inskip at Berwickâ€™s Sun Patrol Clinic. Warriors slip down the ladder The Pakenham Warriors have slid to fifth on the Big V basketball Division 2 men’s standings after their 11-point loss at home to the Coburg Giants at ‘The Colosseum’ at Cardinia Life on Sunday afternoon, 91-80. Fresh off losses in two of their past three games, including a one-point nail-biter in overtime to Wallan 99-98, the Warriors were hell-bent on turning the tables against the Giants. They took a narrow lead into quarter-time and extended that slightly heading into the main break but they came out sluggishly in the third - outscored 26 points to 15 for the quarter. On the back foot heading into the last, Brent Russell’s men were unable to reverse the slide - particularly given the performance of Giants skipper Jordan Harding. The athletic big man finished with 27 points on 11 of 19 from the field to go along with 7 boards and 5 assists. Though the Warriors at one stage led by eight points, they battled for consistency on both ends of the floor. Big man Josh Bjelan was a real shining light for the home side though, particularly given the absence of twin tower Brad Bridgewater, and he shoul-

dered the bulk of the scoring load with 28 points (12 of 17 from the field), 6 boards and 3 assists. Versatile forward James Topp was again particularly efficient from the field, finishing with 15 points on 6-8 shooting, while guard Nick Ross was the other Warriors player to finish in double figures with 13 points - including a pair of threes. For the Giants, their size and activity on the glass ultimately proved a real difference-maker. The news was much better for Simo Pajdic’s Youth League Division 2 men, however, as the ladder-leaders picked up a pair of big wins - firstly away to the Melton Thoroughbreds on Saturday night, and then at home against the Western Port Steelers on Sunday afternoon. The Warriors started with a blaze of glory against the Thoroughbreds, leading 31-18 at quarter time and continuing to put the foot down throughout the second - setting up a big margin en route to a 27-point thumping, 109-82. In a particularly even team performance across the board, Lee Belton led the way with 18 points on 7-14 from the field while Tom Greer was super productive in his 20 minutes

on court - finishing with 12 points, 6 boards, and 5 assists. Big men Lewis Newman (12 points), Matt Berkec (11 boards), and Michael Jok (12 points, 11 boards, and 3 steals) also made their presence felt while guard Tyrone Tonkin also netted 16 points. Pleasingly for the Warriors, they kept their momentum going on Sunday to snare a 22-point win over the Steelers, 88-66, which was spurred on by a blistering 33-15 final quarter. Newman (15 points, 10 boards), Berkec (12 points, 11 boards, 3 blocks) and Dean (12 points) again shone while Aaron Miles also chimed in with 13 points. Finally, Pakenham’s Youth League Division 2 women’s team also picked up a crucial win - taking down the Sherbrooke Suns by six points, 76-70. Sam Neil finished with an eyecatching triple-double (12 points, 10 boards, and a whopping 13 steals), while Rhiannon Gallagher finished with 15 points and 6 steals and Tyla Scorah added 14 points and six boards of her own. With the result, Pakenham currently sits fourth on the ladder with 11 wins and 7 losses.

Casey Cardinia United is still searching for its first victory of the 2017 senior men’s Gridiron Victoria season after a narrow 9-0 loss to the hometown Ballarat Falcons on Saturday. The undermanned side - formerly known as the Pakenham Silverbacks - almost made the perfect start when captain Zane Moran forced a fumble on the first play of the day but the Falcons recovered the ball. Still, some strong defence blocked two first-quarter field goal attempts to keep the scores deadlocked at 0-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Early in the second the visitors strategically gave up a safety to give its defence stronger field position but later in the half the Falcons scored a touchdown - and the ensuing extra point - to lead 9-0 at the main break. Down a couple of players at the half, Casey Cardinia United continued to fight hard but a series of strong offensive drives ultimately fell short due to untimely turnovers. Young quarterback Reid Hiskins was just beginning to find his feet before succumbing to injury, and back up Moran stepped up to the plate. Though the score remained

9-0 for the rest of the contest, special mentions must go to Chris Atwater for his stellar interception and Damien Belsham making it through his return game unscathed. Casey Cardinia United hosts a double-header this Saturday, 22 July, as the Monash Warriors and the Croydon Rangers lock horns from 10.30am before the home side battles the Monash Barbarians at 2pm at Lakeside Recreation Reserve in Pakenham. Casey Cardinia is currently last in Division 2 but just one win adrift of the Bendigo Dragons.

High fives for ’Pies round By David Nagel A rejuvenated Narre Warren has cast fresh light on the South East Football Netball League with a stunning 79-point victory over third-placed Beaconsfield at Holm Park Reserve. The two teams had differing form lines heading in: the fifth-placed Magpies copping a 49-point slap across the face from Berwick, while the Eagles had wins over Officer, Pakenham and Hampton Park sandwiched between two byes. But it was five weeks of easy footy that left the Eagles vulnerable on the weekend - and the Magpies pounced, silencing the doubters and making a strong play for a coveted double chance at the end of the season. “I delved into our history and I don’t think since midway through 2009 have we had our backs against the wall as strongly as we did leading into this match,” Narre Warren coach Heath Black said. “This group didn’t want to be the one that miss out on finals and they responded in great fashion; it was a win that was definitely built above the shoulders. I knew we had it in us, but there was definitely some self-doubt creeping in, even from me as coach. It’s been tough going as a coach, but we scaled things back to a simple game plan, and the players were outstanding. I feel very relieved for the players.” The teams went goal for goal until midway through the first term before the Magpies surged, kicking the next six goals of the match. They maintained that advantage until three-quarter time before rubber-stamping their victory with a

The victor would become the clear challenger to Tooradin in the battle for top spot on the ladder. “I think experience got us through in the end,” said a happy Narre Warren co-coach Greg Heinrich. “Erin Clark is seasoned when it comes to these tough games, and it was players like her that made sure we didn’t take the foot off the pedal at any stage in the last quarter.” Goalers Jemma Osborne (goal shooter) and Kealeigh Brown (goal attack) had big shoes to fill against the Eagles, with Gabby Dwyer, Chloe Phillips and Tayla Shannon all absent due to VNL duties. Clark (wing defence), Bec Potalej (wing attack) and Leigh Taylor (centre) produced a strong second-half showing for the Pies, while Tracey Dell (goal keeper) had a great battle with her longtime foe Bianca Sanzaro (GS), who scored 26 of the side's 40 goals. Ash Gill (C), Kate Murphy (WD), Dani Cameron (gial defence) and Emily Boribon (GA) were also consistent over four quarters for the Eagles. Cranbourne has broken its run of two consecutive draws with an impressive 51-35 victory over Hampton Park at Robert Booth Reserve. The Eagles built their lead

Amataga put on a clinic in the third, scoring 14 goals as the visitors stretched their advantage out to nine at the final break. The Lions surged, scoring 15-10 in the last quarter to fall four goals short of a maiden victory. And Tooradin has retained top spot with a 50-31 triumph over ROC. The Seagulls were most impressive in the second term, scoring 15-4 to have the Kangas on the back foot. Shona Wells, Emma Iacovou, Jess Cox and Holly Gillespie shared the midcourt duties for the Gulls, while Alex Duff, Alex Maher and Dayle Willis did likewise in attack.
