Zoe Gralton is showing us how to look after the environment by organising a screening of The Plastic Ocean. She is following in her mother’s footsteps in her environmental interests.

Jasmin Smith and Bailey Cannell have been solving the traffic issue in Hastings Street and working out how to revamp the ageing Noosa Junction precinct.

Their reports are well thought out and insightful. They have thought of ideas from the bottom up with footpaths that tell stories and direct people along certain paths to ways to bring people of different ages to the centre.

Others are exceeding in other areas such as Milana Gould who recently danced with the Royal Ballet.

It says to me the youth today have interests as varied as they have in any other generation.

Some value the environment, some like sport or the arts, some focus on business, economics and politics.

THIS WEEK WE’RE TALKING ABOUT… HALL UPGRADE TAKES SHAPE The sledgehammers started swinging last Friday when building approval was issued to restore the Cooroy Memorial Hall and School of Arts in Maple Street.

Cooroy Memorial Hall Association (CMHA) president Paul Kluck said asbestos removalists began work Monday, and on their completion the restoration project would follow under the direction of head contractor Harry Kirk.

A move to demolish the hall seemed the likely option last December, but was overturned by a groundswell of community support to save the iconic building which originally opened in 1926.

Mr Kluck said the CMHA was formed on 4 January, and in only six months had secured almost $100,000 which Noosa Council is matching dollar for dollar.

Last week, Sunshine Coast Community Financial Services Limited (SCCFSL) which manages the Cooroy, Tewantin and Pomona Community Bank branches Bendigo Bank, donated $50,000 to the hall upgrade.

Their donation joins others from local businesses including Supa IGA, Roberts Bros and the Noosa and District Orchid and Foliage Society as well as contributions

from individuals including the Bennett family.

“Many people have benefited from the town in money and lifestyle and they want to give back,” Mr Kluck said.

Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington said the way the Cooroy community was rallying to raise funds, gather building materials and labour for the project was impressive, and council was pleased to be supporting the restoration of the hall.

The restoration project will cost $394,000, and the CMHA has enough to secure the work to the half-way mark.

Mr Kluck is hopeful through fund-raising measures and in kind donations the remainder of funds can be obtained.

“We’re looking at skills centre bringing their trainees on board. That’s in kind support and it will be matched dollar for dollar by council,” he said.

“Other businesses may want to donate products or paint and these are also in kind donations.”

Mr Kluck said Cooroy residents were excited to know that the hall, once the focal point of community activity, would soon be open again for the use of all residents. ●

CHOPPER TO THE RESCUE

MIXED TAKE ON SAME-SEX MARRIAGE

The Sunshine Coast RACQ LifeFlight Rescue helicopter on Thursday 13 July airlifted a man, aged in his fifties, after he was kicked by a cow at a property near Cooroy.

The man was treated for head, neck and shoulder injuries, before he was flown to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in a stable condition.

The RACQ LifeFlight Rescue helicopter has so far this year attended to 44 patients around Queensland with animal-related injuries involving cows, bulls, horses, sharks and snakes.

LifeFlight Retrieval Medicine’s director of Clinical Services and Governance Dr Mark Edwards said rescue crews had this year responded to an average of two animal-related incidents a week.

“The incidents range from snake bites or marine stings such as Irukandji, to people who have fallen from horses or been trampled by bulls. Often these incidents are time critical and lifethreatening,” he said.

Sometimes, with animal falls or injuries, patients suffer spinal injuries and that requires careful management and movement of patients.

While Noosa Council prepares to formally support marriage equality at their ordinary meeting at 6pm on Wednesday 19 July, local state and federal members have voiced their views on the subject.

Federal Member for Wide Bay Llew O’Brien said he continued to support the Coalition’s view there should be a plebiscite on whether to legalise samesex marriage despite that bid being defeated in the Senate last November.

He said he respected people on both sides of the debate who had strong feelings on the issue, and that’s why it was important every voice was taken into account through a plebiscite.

The results of a question on same-sex marriage asked in a survey conducted by Noosa MP Glen Elmes in 2015 have only been revealed this week on ABC radio. In the question ‘do you support same-sex marriage’ the majority or 47 per cent said yes, 41 per cent said no, 10 per cent were unsure and two per cent had no response. Mr Elmes said same sex marriage was a Federal Government issue to resolve.

“The Queensland State Government passed a Bill to allow for civil unions,

ustine Jennings believes that little people can change the world.

This Noosa mum and recently published author of an acclaimed children’s book, was inspired to start writing in the hope of making a difference emotionally to the children of today.

Her book Little People Can Change the World has received raving reviews from parents and teachers who are pushing to have the book available to all school children.

“I believe it is so important for children to feel emotionally supported in all aspects of life to be able to grow,” Justine said.

“I only started writing when we moved to Noosa and was inspired to help make a difference to the children of today.

“I am a very emotional person and decided to put that into writing.”

Justine is one of those wonderful people who are geared to contribute to making the world a better place. Further to helping children learn some of the fundamental lessons she also uses the profits of her book to help less fortunate children in Cambodia.

“My parents travelled to Cambodia in May. They caught up with a family friend who has lived there for eight years and married a local and has since adopted two local children.

“He already gives a lot of his time and money into helping the children over there, donating and distributing food to the local hospitals.”

Justine finds her Cambodian friend’s knowledge of the area and who is in desperate need of support invaluable.

With 50c from every purchase of her children’s book going directly toward helping young Cambodian children to access education, she is focused on helping those who are far less fortunate.

“We decided to help out the school children, as it is something myself and my parents are very passionate about,” Justine said.

“Uniforms for the local primary schools are so important as they have a no uniform/no school policy.

“It is an extremely poor area with seasonal work only available in the fields paying an average of $3 per day.

“The condition of Cambodian schools are very poor and require a lot of work.

“I am hoping to raise funds to buy the things they need and then go to Cambodia early next year to personally purchase and distribute the uniforms to the families in need, as well as stationary and other school supplies,” she said.

“We are so fortunate here in Australia especially with our children’s education that when the opportunity came up to help out in Siem Reap, Cambodia, I knew I wanted to help.”

The school where Justine helps is located 80km south of Siem Reap town, in the Srey Nouy district, an extremely poor area in which the government builds the schools but doesn’t maintain them.

Children in this district are often in rags and there is not much money for stationary or school supplies, which makes it almost impossible to learn.

“I believe all children deserve the best chance in life and hope to continue to be able to help less fortunate children,” Justine said.

“This isn’t through an organisation, it is something we are doing personally and 100 per cent of the proceeds go directly to buying the things these under-privileged children need for schooling and, hopefully, some repairs to the building, too,” she said.

Justine and her husband Kym lived on Grand Cayman in the Caribbean for 12 months working on a catamaran and got married in Koh Samui, Thailand.

The world was their oyster and they continued to travel a lot before children and settling in South Australia where they found a love for travelling in Australia and staying in caravan parks.

“We wanted to create lots of new memories with the kids,” Justine said.

After relocating from South Australia the couple fell in love with the relaxed lifestyle in Noosa.

They have three sons - Brodie, Ryan and Taylor - who sometimes make finding a nice quiet place to write a little tricky, but they have inspired Justine to make a change in the world.

“If every child could read this book and gain a better understanding of how to respect and treat our fellow human beings, the world would be a better place.

“Children can absorb something different each time they read the book,” she said.

The gentle rhyming stories in Little People Can Change the World address issues which young children often struggle with and parents may not know how to address.

The format is not only helpful with children’s memory skills but it presents topics such as bullying, loneliness, family problems, death of a loved one, self-love and new schools.

“Each story was inspired by the way I would feel if I were in that position to explain the experience to my own children.

“The dream would be to see this on book shelves and available to all school children,” she said.

EXPOSURE FOR INVISIBLE GROUP

BY MARGARET MACCOLL Are women over 55 socially invisible? This is the question photographer Giselle Peters asked when she and fellow photographer Phil Jackson put together a collection of images of women over 55 years of age to give some exposure to the group largely ignored by society.

She said a recent article on the subject inspired her to embark on the arts project to explore notions of age and beauty.

With a mother she describes as “a real 70s woman” who “did whatever she liked” including at one time “running off with a tiger trainer”, Gisells wasn’t previously aware of the treatment of older women.

Giselle posted a notice on Noosa Community Noticeboard Facebook page, calling for women to be involved in the project she titled The Beautiful Boiler Brigade.

But she wasn’t prepared for the overwhelming response that followed.

“I had 250 likes and multiple shares,” Giselle said. “I was completely inundated.”

On Sunday, Giselle and Phil of business Duke and Gypsy gathered 35 women for a photo shot.

Giselle said she had been surprised and inspired by the women’s stories and comments and the exhibition would be as much about the words as the images.

NEWS TREE PLANTING VOLUNTEERS SOUGHT

WAR DECLARED ON PLASTIC Year 9 student Zoe Gralton has decided to spread awareness of the growing plastic problem by screening A Plastic Ocean tonight at Sunshine Beach State High School (SBSH).

As a member of the youth turtle focus group at Sea Life Mooloolaba and being the daughter of Boomerang Bags founder, Desiree, she is well aware of the issue. “I have made a lot of connections and seen a lot of things that are hard to ignore, such as the increase of plastics washing up on our beaches and turtles that cannot dive down for food due to the ingestion of plastics,� she said. “It made me really sad to see how little people knew about such a big problem. “Becoming a member of the youth turtle group allowed me to meet some likeminded kids around the same age as me and see how they are trying to fix the same problems; this really motivated me to organise the screening.

The film shows the extent of the plastic problem. More than one million plastic bags are used every minute, resulting in 500 billion bags used annually. Plastic waste is collecting in our oceans at an alarming rate; there are no signs of it stopping. “We are now producing nearly 300 million tonnes of new plastic every year, and half of this is designed for single-use. We need solutions to our plastic problem,“ Zoe said.

Zoe is asking the Noosa community to “Rethink Plastic�. “Plastic Oceans aims to change the way we deal with plastic waste by challenging society’s perception that this indestructible substance

Noosa’s Bushland Care Groups are looking for volunteers to help them dig deep for National Tree Day on Sunday, 30 July.

Volunteers will help plant 500 small native shrubs and ground-cover plants on the banks of Noosaville’s Creek Road Park alongside the Weyba Creek Bushland Care volunteers, who’ve organised the event. Council’s Community Partnerships Officer Kylie Gordon said the new plantings would help make the creek bank more stable, enhance the riparian area and help reduce the occurrence of weeds.

Volunteers are welcome to take part on Sunday, 30 July from 8am-10.30am at Creek Road Park with a morning tea to follow.

Internationally renowned sports consultant Wayne Goldsmith will be the keynote speaker at the launch of the draft Noosa Sport and Active Recreation Plan on Wednesday 26 July at 6pm at Noosa Springs Resort.

Goldsmith will speak on the changing nature of physical activity participation and what it means for sports clubs, governments and commercial sport and active recreation providers.

Residents are invited to attend the launch, provide comment on the draft plan and hear Wayne Goldsmith speak.

More than 400 people have contributed to the development of the draft.

Of the 144 organisations that provide sport and active recreation opportunities in the shire, 44 per cent are run by commercial operators and 48 per cent by not-for-profit groups.

Council said the chargers can be converted for use on cars and investigations were being conducted on whether they could be returned to the manufacturer or sold. ●

MUMPRENEURS AWARDS Finding a balance between parenthood and a career can be difficult, but many of Noosa’s mums who are busy building a career and raising their children are now hoping to be recognised for their hard work.

Five Noosa-based business owners and entrepreneurs have been nominated for the 2017 AusMumpreneur Awards all vying for a range of awards.

Claire Fermo of Aussie Curls, Kym Foster of Share Shop, Aimee Sherriff of Powerhouse Collective, Natalee Anderson of Fat Burning Women and former Noosa Today journalist Jolene Ogle of Real Estate Write have all been nominated for a range of business awards designed to celebrate business owners who are also mothers.

The AusMumpreneur Awards are presented by The AusMumpreneur Network, and are designed to recognise Australian mums in business achieving outstanding success in areas such as business excellence, product development, customer service and digital innovation.

The awards are a celebration of the growing number of women who successfully balance motherhood and business in a way that suits their life and family.

Noosa’s five nominees all work from home and Noosa’s new parenting hub, the Powerhouse Collective, where an attached creche offers working parents the chance to work while having their children close-by.

Claire is hoping to win the award for her Big Idea, while Natalee and Jolene are hoping to be winners in the Emerging Mumpreneur of the Year award.

CROWDS SWITCH ON TO RADIO

Noosa Community Radio 101.3FM was abuzz with activity on Saturday when the station opened its doors to the public and presented live music in addition to its program on the air waves.

Residents tested their abilities as radio presenters and learnt a little about the running of a radio station from its volunteer staff, and the Queensland Ambulance Service was there to display its services. ●

NEWS TRAFFIC PLANNING AT A JUNCTION Noosa councillor Jess Glasgow has been working with Year 10 Noosa District State High School students to solve the traffic dilemma facing Hastings Street and a revamp of Noosa Junction and their solutions have been outstanding.

The students have methodically evaluated the issues facing Hastings Street, Noosa Heads, including the large numbers of daytrippers during holidays, limited access, hilly terrain and the desire to reduce carbon emissions.

Students Jasmin Smith and Bailey Cannell discussed options from park and ride to building a bridge from the Woods across the Noosa River.

In conclusion she argued: “Overall, the Congestion Area charge or toll system would be the most effective proposal to combat the congestion in Noosa’s Hasting Street.”

It was again a top effort when they turned their attention to Noosa Junction.

The students outlined the problems facing the area and went about solving them.

“A list of changes has been put forward to correct the haphazard growth of Noosa Junction and to promote further development,” they said.

“This would include the development of multi-level residential apartments, a road between Lanyana Way and Noosa Drive, filling vacant stores and changing the pavement.”

The students suggested that

They thought a multinational company such as an Apple store would attract a younger demographic and a night club sited at the opposite end of the area from Flanagan’s Irish Pub would bring in the middle-aged demographic.

The students were assisted in their projects by University of Sunshine Coast Associate Professor Johanna Rosier, Noosa Council strategic planner Michelle Tucker, councillor Jess Glasgow and Traders Association chairman Stephen Boyd. ●

BOWLED OVER BY THE CHANGES

BY MARGARET MACCOLL Stopping play in a bid to gain higher wages wasn’t an option when Patsy Fayne (nee May) of Noosaville played cricket for Australia from 1968 to 1976.

There were no wages for women cricketers and the media did their best to mock them at every toss or catch.

Given the chance, though, she’d do it all again.

Last week Patsy spoke to the Cooroy Probus Club about her eight years playing for the Australian women’s cricket team and showed members just how much the media and society have changed.

Patsy grew up a self-confessed tomboy.

Her dad played cricket for Hawthorne East in Melbourne where he was captain and she had a brother.

“He was three years older, stronger.

He owned the bat. I never got the bat so I bowled,” she said.

To discourage her tomboy ways her parents sent her to a “very good private girls’ school” where education was the focus, not sport.

But when she started university she sighted the nets, threw a couple of bowls and was on the team.

“There was a small group of women playing in those days,” she said.

“You just played for the love of the game.”

For her friends not involved in cricket “it was a bit of an embarrassment” that she played a boys’ game.

The ladies played Lord's much to the men's disapproval.

Patsy donated most of her cricket memorabilia to the Bradman Museum.

Paparazzi got into the women's dressing rooms.

At the time she worked as a physical education teacher. In order to compete her workplace gave her leave without pay and she was lucky, some girls lost their jobs.

Whenever they played the media had a field day with them, taking photos when

they bent over.

One player put her workplace name on her underwear which stopped photographers who weren’t allowed to display advertising.

Patsy was once called a ‘fattish’ bowler

despite her thin physique. It should have been ‘fastish’, she said.

She said there were lots of dirty tricks like taking them all out to lunch at a brewery before the match and locking the entrance to Lord’s Cricket Ground so they were forced to use the fire escape.

But there were plenty of good times.

She travelled with the team and had tea and discussed women and leadership with Margaret Thatcher.

“It made an impression on your life,” she said.

The West Indies certainly made an impression.

On one occasion a handsome West Indian man asked her “does this cricket interfere with your sex life?” She said for the liberal-minded West Indians, sex life meant social life. Just before the nightly 6pm news on TV there was a five-minute slot on sex education for the whole family.

In another incident she was billeted with a family whose pet goat ate the pantyhose she had hung out to dry.

“Difficult to replace, beige stockings in the West Indies,” she said.

Patsy decided to quit cricket after a school reunion. She met her classmates who were married with children and she was spending all her money on cricket.

“I felt I was missing out,” she said.

Patsy marvels at how the women today are treated as serious athletes, paid to play and have support teams. ●

NEWS MANGAN’S SEEN SERVICE EVOLVE IN THE AMBULANCE

In his 43 years as an ambulance officer, Lee Mangan has experienced some highs and lows and witnessed sights he hopes he’ll never see again.

On Saturday, the former officer-in-charge of Pomona Ambulance Service received a presentation to mark his retirement.

Delivering babies was one of the nicer aspects of his job as was saving someone’s life.

“It’s always nice when they come back a few months later and show you the baby or say thank you for saving my life,” he said.

There are some situations such as arriving at the scene of an accident he’d rather forget.

“When you live in a small community, you get to know the families and the kids.

When you go and can’t save them, it hits hard,” he said.

The service has changed enormously over Lee’s time from the use of basic first aid to high tech medical care.

“Gone are the days we used to use bits of board and bandages for splints,” he said.

“Back then if you could, you’d do something at the scene then chuck them in the car and try and get them to the hospital in time. The townspeople were much more friendly. They were always willing to lend a hand. Someone would pipe up and drive for you.”

When Lee began, it was the Queensland Ambulance Transport Brigade (QATB),

Lee Mangan the ladies committees would fund-raise for more equipment and officers knocked on residents doors to sign them up for ambulance subscriptions.

“The public owned the ambulance service, paid the ambulance driver,” he said.

“When the government took over, we had better services and more funding, but we lost contact with the public.”

Over the years, he’s missed more than his fair share of birthdays, Christmases and events through call outs.

Lee has no regrets over his retirement, and is looking forward to some travel, restoring some old motorbikes and just being home and getting a good night’s sleep. ●

AMBOS TURN 100

The Pomona Ambulance Station on Saturday celebrated 100 years since its opening. The station was set up two months after requests from residents called for an ambulance centre in the town.

At the time, senior bearer Rookwood was appointed officer-in-charge. Two years later, the sub centre was converted into an independent centre with Rookwood appointed superintendent, but he passed away only a year later and was replaced by senior bearer W. G. Nash.

The following year in 1921, the ambulance committee replaced their horse wagon with a Dodge motor ambulance, enabling coverage of a wider area.

In 1949, the centre was moved to

its current location.

The Pomona Committee purchased a parcel of land in the middle of town, and the residence that had been built for the superintendent in Ambulance Street was relocated to the site and raised, providing space for the brigade premises below.

The centenary celebrations included displays of historic equipment and uniforms and the original wheeled stretcher from the Queensland Ambulance Service and Pomona museums and demonstrations from the Cooroora Emergency Service cadets. A formal presentation was made to recently retired officer-in-charge Lee Mangan who began his career as an honorary ambulance officer in Walget, NSW, in 1974. ●

GREENS AT THE BOTTOM Noosa Council’s latest push by looking at formally supporting marriage equality is a disgrace.

I don’t recall any of the councillors actively promoting LGBTI behaviours or same-sex marriage prior to their last election as this is not the province of council which should be concentrating on roads, rubbish, the built environment, parks, water and assisting with industrial and business expansion to grow the wealth and well-being of the community.

The council’s support of so-called marriage equality is against traditional norms, core values and morality and diminishes all that is good in a fruitful society.

According to the report, Sydney has a median dwelling price of $880,000 while over 100 offices in the heart of Sydney’s CBD sold for under $605,000 in the year to May 2017.

The lowest sales price was a 26 square metre room within 229 Macquarie Street that sold for just $87,000 in July last year. Comparatively, a 22 square metre office at 118/250 Pitt Street sold for $188,000 in the same month along with office number 104 in the same building that also sold for $180,000.

CoreLogic’s report stated small commercial spaces are relatively low in value for a number of reasons including investors being more reliant on rental yield than capital growth. ●

PROPERTY VALUES ENJOY FIVE-YEAR HIGH COMBINED capital city dwelling values have increased by 9.6 per cent over the past financial year, according to the latest data. The increase was greater than the 8.3 per cent rise over the 2015/16 financial year making it the fifth year in a row that combined capital city dwelling prices have risen.

Prior to this five-year run of increases, there were successive financial years in which values fell; down 1.4 per cent in 2010/11 and down 3.6 per cent in 2011/12.

CoreLogic’s Cameron Kusher said across the individual capital cities the growth story over recent financial years had been vastly different. “(In Sydney) dwelling values increased by 12.2 per cent over the past year and it was the fifth successive year in which values rose. Value growth was slightly higher than the 11.3 per cent over the previous financial year,” he said.

For Melbourne, values have now increased for five successive financial years with each of those years

progressively seeing a faster rate of value growth. Over the past year, values increased by 13.7 per cent which was their greatest increase over a financial year since 2009/10.

For Brisbane, a two per cent increase in values over the past financial year was down on the 5.3 per cent the previous year. Brisbane values have increased over each of the past five years however, last year was the slowest rate of growth since 2012/13.

“In most capital cities, the rate of value growth over the past financial year was superior to that over the previous year,” Mr Kusher said.

“The exceptions were Brisbane and Darwin. A number of cities recorded their greatest increases in values in a number of years highlighting that the rate of growth has been accelerating.”

Mr Kusher said the rebound in investment activity after 2015/16 and successive rate cuts in May and August last year have influenced the rebound in capital gains. ●

With the most successful debut album in Australian musical history, Lior burst on to the Australian music scene some years back with ‘Autumn Flow’.

40g pkt Coles Mexican seasoning.

2 cups (400g) Coles long grain white rice.

1 red onion, thinly sliced.

Riverfront dining

1. Preheat oven to 200C. Line a large baking tray with baking paper. Shake the chicken drumsticks and seasoning in a sealable plastic bag. Place the chicken in a single layer on the lined tray. Bake, turning occasionally, for about 35 minutes.

2. Meanwhile, cook the rice in a large saucepan of boiling water for about 12 minutes. Drain.

3. Return the saucepan to the heat with the oil. Add the onion and cumin and cook, stirring, for 2-3 minutes. Return the rice to the pan with the corn and beans. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 1-2 minutes or until the mixture is heated through.

4. Serve the chicken drumsticks with the rice mixture.

BY HOLLIE HARRIS As consumers, we readily splurge on a night out to dinner or the movies, but rarely spend on a luxurious treat for ourselves? I decided to indulge this week. On the flipside of an awful flu, two days in bed and a deadline to get past, my body was sore.

I made an appointment at Sheer Bliss Beauty Day Spa on the Noosa Marina and it truly was a blissful experience, to say the least.

Taking a seat on their private deck right over the rippling waters of the Noosa River, I sipped on sweet coconut lime juice and freshened up with a warm face towel as I waited for my stay in Spa Heaven to be ready.

Warm towels are a personal favourite, and they just kept coming to my delight!

Miranda tended to my every need and delivered to me a deeply relaxing and calming massage. In a candle-lit room with the subtle smells of peony blossoms and softly piping music, I sunk into the most delicious state of relaxation.

Every detail of Sheer Bliss has been considered. From the warm and welcoming staff, the glowing candles and flower petals, to the shimmering chandeliers and glistening water views, Sheer Bliss feels luscious and decadent.

As my tension let go and my body and mind fell further into calmness, I thought about how much we all need more of this type of pampering. The next part of my treat was a coconut and rose petal soak. When the doors opened I was truly speechless. A room filled with flickering candles and petals across the floor, a steaming spa bath with sweet smelling oils and rose petals awaited me, complete with a dish of chocolates and a cool drink.

I soaked in the opulence of freshly picked rose petals for half an hour while my skin soaked in the nutrients from the beauty-boosting coconut milk. My Cleopatra’s Hydration Bathing Ritual was an utterly divine experience which left me feeling like royalty.

FOCUS ON … Pomona King of the Mountain

A LEGEND IS LAUNCHED

BY HOLLIE HARRIS While the festival has now become a hallmark local event for the Noosa hinterland town of Pomona, its origins are in a dare between mates at the local watering hole.

In 1958, at the bar of the old Railway Hotel, local footballer and railway porter Bruce Samuels casually claimed he ran to the top of Mount Cooroora in under an hour.

Sceptical pub patrons were quick to demand to see it for themselves and set the challenge.

Astonished locals saw Samuels return in just 40 minutes to collect his £100 wager.

His feat saw him become the town hero and he was bestowed with the nicknamed ‘Hilary’ Samuels.

Fittingly, his achievement became the stuff of legends and it was recorded on the wall of the hotel bar.

In 1959, this attracted the attention of 21 year hotel punter Barry Webb from Brisbane who declared that he could beat Samuel’s time and a race was set for the following Saturday.

With a time of 35 minutes Webb became the recipient of about 25 shillings from the passing around of the hat.

A gracious Samuels was quick to congratulate Webb, but determined to reclaim his title. He began training for a rematch scheduled for 27 June 1959 and the rest, as they say, is history and the legendary

The challenge is set to conquer the majestic mountain.

Who will be crowned the King or Queen this year?

Pomona King of the Mountain race was born.

The festival program includes a three kilometre Family Fun Run, Heritage Markets, the Primary School Relay, tug of war for primary school children and a corporate tug of war for local businesses and sports clubs), live music on the Pomona IGA stage (bands to be confirmed), buskers,

amusement rides, side show alley and a relaxing food court area... plus more.

The main race will be held at 2.30pm.

The Bendigo Bank International Mountain Challenge is a steep, almost vertical 4.2km climb up the mountain and back.

Entrants come from all over Australia, New Zealand, the Pacific rim and the

United Kingdom with a strong rivalry between Australia and New Zealand participants.

Runners start from the centre of the Noosa hinterland township of Pomona and head bush towards Mount Cooroora.

A set of low hills confronts runners before they take on the mountain track which is little more than a goat track.

The return down the mountain requires strength, agility, a good sense of balance and an immunity to fear.

The event brings together a host of attractions and event experiences so competitors and spectators can look forward to another all-day, fun-filled event on Sunday 23 July within the beautiful hinterland setting of Pomona.

Once again the calibre of this year’s competitors means there are no favourites to win the hotly contested race.

Brisbane based, 25-year-old athlete Ben Duffus has represented Australia in many events overseas and won the race following both of his previous attempts in 2013 and 2014.

He will return this year for his third King of the Mountain challenge and will face fierce competition from reigning champion, 33-yearold Mark Bourne of the ACT who also won his maiden race.

Six seconds is all that separates their personal best times and both men have competed many times between them in New Zealand’s equally iconic sister race Kawerau King of the Mountain.

But before hedging bets on Ben or Mark consider Daniel Jones.

Returning to Pomona for the first time since he set the yet-unbroken record as a junior in 2008, Daniel, a New Zealand representative, finished third at Kawerau in 2016, one spot behind Ben Duffus and one spot in front of Mark Bourne.

Another athlete looking to take part in this year’s Bendigo Bank Mountain Challenge has already set a record for being the oldest competitor in the history of the race.

Seventy-seven-year-old Frank Falappi from West Woombye has competed in many long distance events ranging from 45-100klms since 2014, and is proof that age is no barrier to taking on new challenges for those who are fit and well prepared. ●

BY HOLLIE HARRIS A project of The Cooroy and Pomona Lion’s Club since 1979, the community-oriented King of the Mountain Festival continues to celebrate the great race and the achievements of its competitors.

This month, the 2016 Sports Federation Event of the Year, has again attracted athletes looking to secure its prestigious title in recognition of the endurance required to negotiate the course’s rugged terrain.

Reigning Queen of the Mountain and local Pomona school teacher Leslie Saunders will seek her third consecutive title and compete against dual winner Maree Stephenson from Brisbane who is back to compete for the first time since her successive wins in 2009 and 2010. Both women will also face stiff competition from New Zealand representative Robyn Muir who will race up Mt Cooroora for the first time and is the reigning Open Women’s champion of the Kawerau Mountain event.

Leslie is very excited to run this weekend as it will be her 10th year in the race.

She has been such a tough competitor over the years, and with a few wins under her belt, she has been lucky enough to be flown to New Zealand to run Kawerau.

“Those girls run big mountains over there. That race is twice as high, twice as long to run, so it’s a tough one. I was lucky enough to come 3rd last year and 2nd the two years before that,” Leslie said.

Leslie loved watching the King of the Mountain for years with her children until her friend talked her into getting involved.

“He is so supportive. He tells me I could break the 30! I would love that, but with a bit of a chest sickness right now and so many incredible racers in the line-up this year, it will be hard,” she said.

Last year, the event was recognised when it was awarded the 2016 Sunshine Coast Sports Federation Event of the Year. ●

Queensland Koala Crusaders and Noosa Alive festival invite everyone to come along this Sunday from 9.30am12.30pm at Lions Park, Gympie Terrace, Noosaville, to the Koala Kids Day Picnic.

There will be live animals from Wildlife HQ, demonstrations with detection dogs by the University of the Sunshine Coast and Cuddles the animated koala will be there to show off a new book, Cuddles of Tea Tree Bay. There will be music by Simon Russell Baker, Sam Shepherd and the Dennis Sisters with MC Sam Coward from 91.1 HotFM and a short play will be performed by Little Seed Theatre Company.

You can learn the koala song with Dave Norman and Rachel Halverson, enjoy some storytelling or be entertained by the Noosa Alive dancers.

Finally, in the Ricochet form of croquet, Noosa travelled to Headland/Buderim and were out-played 2 matches to 1.

In the singles John Olsen lost to Kathleen Calchlough 22:23 while Hans van Moorst defeated Cheryl Moodie 23:18.

Playing against Mooloolaba Milky Ways, the final score was 7-1 to Mooloolaba. Well done to Charlie for scoring the goal and to the rest of the team for playing their very best and enjoying themselves.

Congratulations to Max who was the player of the match for his outstanding play on field.

The Noosa Gold Under 7 team came back well-rested after the holiday break to play against the Chancellor Cats this week.

After no goals were scored by either team in the first half, Noosa came back with a vengeance in the second to secure an 8-0 win. Charlie Giles positioned himself cleverly in order to score the first goal, as did Zain Liddell and Nate Morgan.

“The Ryan’s" then boosted the score with Ryan Atkinson securing two goals and Ryan Curtis scoring an impressive three goals.

However, what was most outstanding about the game was not only the outcome, but that each of the players demonstrated excellent sportsmanship and respect for the opposing team. Congratulations!

Congratulations to the Under 9 Gold and Black teams who battled it out on field.

What an outstanding game played by both teams who not only went out and played their absolute best, but had a fun time playing against each other. They all fought hard on their defence but it was Under 9 Black who took the win 7-4.

Well done to Harry, Bella, and Joel for your fantastic goals for Under 9 Gold and to Rohnan, Noah, Lenny and Cooper on scoring your goals for Under 9 Black.

Every player on both teams deserves a congratulations on how well they played and by showing awesome sportsmanship towards each other. Man of the match went to Kallum, who was on the ball the entire game, good work Kallum. James and Alexander also received vouchers who played outstandingly on both field and in goals.

The Under 10 Noosa Black team, after a three week break from match play, were ready for a tough game this week against Mooloolaba.

After a scoreless first half, Mooloolaba sneaked two goals and ultimately took away the win 2-0. Congratulations, Mooloolaba, but what a mighty effort from the Noosa team.

Every week the Under 10 Noosa Black improve and, despite their loss this week, they should be very proud of their team work and effort.

CHECKING OUT NOOSA’S BIG SECRET

BY HOLLIE HARRIS It is 9.30am Saturday at the Noosa District Netball Park and as I stood with club Patron and Life Member Lola McDonald and watched the morning competition unfold, I found it hard to understand how come this obviously successful and well-supported game was such a well-kept secret.

With a total of some 400 competitors and 40 teams, it was quite obvious that here is a sport that successfully caters for the female population of our community; and is indeed looking very strong.

Run by a committee of six and under the supervision of President Bev Bullivant, they have a total of 11 hard courts and four grass - and this does indeed tend to keep coordinator Therese Tati very busy.

“We have been striving for some time to get more exposure,” Bev said, “but for some reason it just hasn’t been happening.”

With 15 courts plus a club house and canteen, the facilities are good and there is definitely no lack of support from families and locals.

With Saturday competition for 6-15 age group and Monday evenings indoor games at the Noosa Leisure Centre for the adult ladies (who have some 330 members filling 32 teams) the sport is definitely solid.

“This is definitely a great family game,” Bev said. “We have several instances of mothers who played here as young girls, now having their daughters out on the courts. Also you will always find a lot of grandparents coming along on Saturday mornings to give support.’’

To ensure a high standard of play, the Noosa Club runs umpire training programs that have proven very successful.

Treasurer Jane Marren, who has held the chair for five years and also works in promotion said, “The recent win by the Sunshine Coast Lightning has been great for the sport; add to this the TV exposure and you couldn’t ask for better. Representatives of the team have recently paid us a visit, thus showing that they are prepared to put back into the sport in a big way.

“Netball is no different to any other amateur sport, in as much as all the people

connected to the club - management, coaches and workers all have full time jobs.

To make time available to help their club can be difficult.

“For example, on carnival days our workforce can be faced with a day that goes from 7am to 4pm and sometimes longer.

So whenever someone gives an hour or two during the day we are indeed grateful,” Bev said.

On Sunday 30 July, Noosa Netball will play host to a carnival with a possible 52 clubs taking part; coming from districts such as Gympie, Caboolture, Buderim,

Caloundra and Palmwoods to name just a few.

We hope all goes well for this hard working dedicated team.

When we look at all the supporters, many of them retired grandparents, we wonder if there is not a retired journo or two amongst them who would like to assist in promotion.

If there is, just make yourself known your help would be appreciated.

Let us never forget that sport brings publicity and business into our community.

LOCAL STARS SHINE AT YOUTH COMMONWEALTH GAMES As we go to press, the Youth Commonwealth Games will be getting under way in the Bahamas and two of our local athletes - Ben Cameron-Hands and Ella Boot - will proudly wear the green and gold of Australia.

Selected to represent their country, both will do so in the sport of boxing. Ben will contest the 49kg division and Ella the 60kg.

Now we have a closer and more informative look at this great event for our youth.

The games which will be conducted from the 19-23rd July will have a program of seven sports; Athletics, Beach Volley Ball,

Boxing, Judo, Cycling (Road), Rugby 7s and Swimming.

Australia’s contribution will be a team of 75 with ages being 14-18.

Prior to departure, our boxing team held a two day training camp at Runaway Bay on the Gold Coast, where, apart from training, they were outfitted with uniforms and had opportunities to meet their team-mates.

Ben and Ella will both box in a division of 16 fighters and all indications are that on day one, there will be eight fights, day two four, day thre - two, and day four - one.

Over the last twelve months, Ben and Ella have been busy fighting in tournaments all over the country with both winning - amongst other titles - the Australian Golden Gloves.

Add to this Ella has recently returned from a tour of the UK and Hungary winning major tournaments in both.

"Their achievements have been outstanding,” said Cooroy Impact Boxing Academy Coach Mark Evans.

“To make the Australian team is really the highlight. Apart from their wins in the ring, their conduct and manners outside are beyond reproach; this reflects on both their club and above all their families. The Noosa community should take pride in their achievements.”

At the recent Oceania Tournament held on the Gold Coast, Impact's Bryce Hegity nominated to fight in the 75kg Super Quattro Event.

This event consisted of four fighters in each of the elite divisions, all fighting each other each day. Points were allocated according to results.

At the end of three days, the two with the most points contested the final; Bryce made the final and went on to win the Championship Belt.

Bryce, who lives in Tinbeerwah and works as a personal trainer, has a record of 48 wins with 18 losses; with the losses coming in the early stage of his career.

Now at 23, he has amongst his wins several major titles, at both state and national level; two of which are the Australian Golden Gloves and the International Coral Sea Challenge Championship, which he won in Cairns in 2016.

His immediate aim is to make the Australian team for next year's Commonwealth Games. We wish him well.

Another highlight of the Oceania Tournament was that Mark Evans was

Bryce Hegarty. appointed to work as an official Australian Coach.

It is now twelve months since Evans, owner/coach of Cooroy's Impact Boxing Academy, first opened the doors of the gym; and the success stories continue.

The fact that a Brisbane family drives to Cooroy and back twice a week so that their daughter can train at the Academy speaks volumes for the character of the club.

“It is not just about teaching the young to box and win,” said Evans, “but most important how to live outside the ring; live with self-discipline, good manners and above all respect for others.”

LEARNING TO

SHOOT STRAIGHT Not too many people in Noosa can say they’ve won an Academy Award, but then not too many people have pointed a camera at such a diverse range of subjects - from dolphins to monster waves to catwalk models - as Greg Huglin has over a long and storied career.

Now the American-born cinematographer is planning to share his wealth of knowledge with people of all ages who want to improve their filming technique, whether they’re looking for that elusive Oscar or just a better selfie.

I’ve known “Huggie” since the 1970s, when he was travelling the world gathering material for his first full-length surf feature, Fantasea, and our paths crossed here and there in the world of surfing over the years, but in recent times, since he, wife Andrea and children Jasmin and Josh decided to call Noosa home, it’s been a real pleasure to renew the friendship.

After graduating with a film-making degree from San Francisco Art Institute, as well as picking up university level teaching credentials from California Community Colleges, Greg had a stint working as a fashion photographer in New York before eventually returning to home base Santa Barbara and devoting himself to shooting the best over and underwater footage ever seen. Along the way, he took on a young intern called Jack Johnson who was showing great skill as a surf cinematographer until a singing career got in the way.

By the turn of the century, Greg was making a name for himself shooting the new frontier of surfing - extreme big waves.

His 2006 feature Shark Park remains a classic of the big wave genre, but he was also casting the net wider, shooting specialist footage for big Hollywood productions. It was in this way that his cinematography for the extraordinary film The Cove, revealing the senseless slaughter of dolphins in Japan, won him a shared Oscar for best documentary of 2010.

Since the family’s move to Noosa in 2014, Greg has continued to travel to the world’s big wave hotspots, like Hawaii’s Jaws and Portugal’s Nazare, but he has also pointed his state-of-the-art Red Epic camera at local longboarders, and picked up camerawork on big local productions, such as the Erroll Flynn biopic, In Like Flynn, currently shooting on the Gold Coast, and guestlectured at USC. When I asked Huggie to co-host a luncheon at the Laguna Real Estate Noosa Festival of Surfing last March with legendary big wave filmer Tim Bonython, I was impressed with the way he conveyed his knowledge of film-making to a rapt audience with a slick patter and a healthy dose of self-deprecating humour. I thought he’d be a natural as a teacher of film skills.

Little did I know that this was already the game plan.

Since then Greg and Andrea have established the Noosa Film Academy,

offering full and half-day courses for individuals and schools in all aspects of film-making and natural light stills photography. Says Greg: “Our students learn how to shoot short scripted films on location, and alternate between the key roles of director, camera operator, script supervisor, actor, sound operator and editor.” If you think that’s a lot of information to digest in one day, you don’t know Huggie, who cuts to the chase while keeping it accessible to the layman.

SOUL SURFERS: FROM KILLING BAMBI TO QUOTING SOCRATES A couple of weeks back in these pages I shared a few yarns about the legendary Bob McTavish, who will be appearing next Monday night at Soul Surfers, part of the Noosa Alive Festival of Thought.

Today, I turn my attention to the equally legendary Tom Wegener, of whom the erudite editor of Swellnet and surfboard fanatic Stu Nettle recently wrote: “Few surfers have done as much to strip surfing down to its fundamentals as Tom Wegener.

The Californian expat eschews legropes, thinks fins are optional, and that wood is the finest of all materials - much the same as the ancient Hawaiians did on their olos and

alaias. According to Tom, surfing requires nothing more than rider, board, and wave.

But such minimalism belies a sophisticated appreciation of surfing. In contrast to his actions, Wegener has cultivated an ornate secret garden, and in (his book) Surfboard Artisans he opens the gate to curious wanderers.”

Representing a younger generation of soul surfers than McTavish, Tom, now in his fifties, was a solicitor in California until the surf bug bit him and he gave up his career to design surfboards and travel the world looking for waves. This search led him to Noosa in 1998, where he fell in love, started a family and made his home. Today he is the most respected name in the world of sustainable wood surfboard production, has a PhD in sustainable technology and has published a well-received memoir.

As Stu Nettle has noted, perhaps the most interesting aspect of the scholarly Surfboard Artisans is the way Tom, who was accused by some of his closest friends of selling out when he started mass producing foam and fibreglass versions of his wooden alaia boards, turns the blowtorch on himself to analyse exactly what we mean by “selling out”.

This is compelling stuff, and I’m looking forward to taking the theme further when I sit between Wegener and McTavish on the panel of Soul Surfers at the RACV Resort on Monday night. Don’t miss out. Tickets are available at noosaalive.com.au ● 12352455-LB20-17

TOP SHOWJUMPERS TAKE THE FIELD

BY JOY RINGROSE It is not often that you can get to see Olympic level showjumping in your own backyard, but this coming weekend you can do just that.

The Sunshine Coast Showjumping Club’s July show at the Nambour Showgrounds promises to be bigger and better than ever before.

Held over four days, from 20-23 July, it will feature the most successful riders from Australia and New Zealand.

Prize money this year is an unprecedented $30,000 due to the continuing success of this well-attended club, whose monthly meetings attract the best jumping horses and riders in the district.

It will feature the biggest prize money Grand Prix that the district has ever seen.

The show caters to all levels of riders, with Thursday’s classes a warm-up for the bigger classes in the next three days.

Two arenas will be run on grass, with the professionals taking the higher jumps in ring one, and the younger riders competing in ring two.

On Friday, the bigger money classes start, and on Saturday afternoon at 4pm the nail-biting speed class gets underway - one round at break-neck speed over the long European-style course in the main Arena.

Some of the best horses in the nation will be competing in this event.

Sunday is the big money day, starting with the Future Stars Classic, for horses 10 years and under, with $4280 in prize money to be won.

At around noon the big event of the show takes place, the $10,000 Grand Prix, with its $3000 first prize.

Altogether, twenty World Cup riders will be competing in this class.

Horses not placed in the top ten in the Grand Prix can still have a shot at the money in the $2780 prized Mini Prix, which is on straight after.

This show is free to the public, and is a chance to see the nation’s top horses in action.

RIVER STILL CONTINUES TO PRODUCE SOLIDLY Noosa’s boat ramps were again packed with plenty of boats hitting the water.

Starting off with Offshore; the weather last weekend was perfect to head offshore and anglers were out in force with high expectations to see some good snapper.

The middle and reefs have been the best for these lovely fish with North reef producing some great catches.

Sweetlip and Pearlies are also on the chew with these hard fighting fish taking a liking to soft plastics hopped around the coral structure.

Burley has been key to getting good results so this is when leftover bait from the last trip really comes in handy!

Start your trail with cubed pillies then send down a frozen burley log and before long you’ll have them coming over the side.

On the wider grounds - like the Barwon Banks and the Hards - we have seen cobia, tusk fish, moses perch, Pearlies, amberjack and coronation trout. Sunshine has also come up with the goods with some quality sweetlip, squire, tusk fish and coral trout.

The trevally have been in great numbers in the Noosa River over the past week with fish up to 60cm being caught.

the river system on the tide with most of the activity happening around the Woods Bays area. Slow rolling prawn profile soft plastic is a sure-fire way to come in contact with these hard fighting pelagics.

Early morning surface fishing has also been working around the Woods Bays for lure anglers with big eye trevally, queenfish and tailor taking both poppers and surface walkers.

For the bait anglers, big flathead have been active up the Weyba Creek stretch on the change of tide with live baits and also whitebait being their undoing.

Fishing after dark around the Tewantin Marina has been producing quality bream, flathead, tailor, tarpon and even the odd winter jack. Better size school jew have been active in the stretch of water between the lakes. Try focussing your times fishing the change of tides around the deeper holes.

Soft vibes and larger paddle tail soft plastics are ideal for targeting jewfish.

Whiting are still in good numbers with the usual spots all reporting good captures - worms, yabbies and soldier crabs have all been great baits for a feed of these sweet fish. On the beaches; the weather over the past weekend was perfect for packing the

Bream, dart, flathead and whiting were on the bite during the day on prawns, whitebait and worms, with the added bonus of tailor coming onto the bite around the low light periods.

When chasing tailor along the beaches, it definitely pays to put in the time and find the best gutter possible. Jewfish have been around with the best bait to target them being mullet and bonito strips.
