By Victoria Stone-Meadows Casey’s $125 million Bunjil Place project has an official opening date with construction expected to be complete and the new building open to the public on 28 October 2017.

Federal MP for La Trobe and Casey Mayor Sam Aziz took a look at the building on Wednesday 19 July to inspect how the work was coming along.

When the mammoth project was first announced in June 2015, council predicted construction would be complete by the end of 2017.

The project was jointly funded by Casey Council and the Federal Government thanks to advocacy and input from MP Jason Wood.

Mr Wood was instrumental in se-

curing $10 million of funding from the federal government for the project and said he was amazed with how the building has come along.

“It looks unbelievable,” he said.

“The wood feature archways at the front - when you first see it, you realise this is not an ordinary building this is a work of art.”

Mr Wood said the performance and exhibition spaces within the new building would mean people in Casey and surrounding areas will have access to world-class art at their doorstep.

“When it comes to the performing arts and arts in general, now we will have a facility which will mean no longer will the good people of La Trobe and Casey need to go into the CBD to see high quality arts,” he said.

“Instead the good city folk can come here and see local artists and see them perform in home territory.”

Mr Wood said he was impressed the Casey Council had managed to use the federal funding contribution to get the best outcome for residents.

“It’s precisely what they said they would achieve on paper but to see it close up you realise it is that and more,” he said.

“I must congratulate the Casey Council, councillors and staff; they’ve really gone after a major project for the area going to have benefits for the community for decades to come.”

Bunjil Place will be officially opened with a weekend of activities in and around the building on Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 October.

Cr Aziz said all residents were welcome to attend the event and be some of the first to experience one of the City of Casey’s biggest infrastructure projects.

“After many years of planning and construction, we are incredibly excited that we now have a date to welcome the first visitors to this vibrant entertainment precinct,” he said.

“Bunjil Place will be an enlivening destination, providing experiences that will instil a sense of enjoyment, wonder, discovery and belonging in visitors.”

“With such a diverse and unprecedented mix of facilities, Bunjil Place will offer enriching experiences for all visitors and you will be able to choose how you want to enjoy this remarkable

new community space.”

After the initially opening celebrations have ended, Narre Warren library and council offices will begin to operate from the new building on Monday 30 October.

Council expects there will be no interruption to services to residents as the move to Bunjil Place would take place entirely over the weekend.

Cr Aziz said he was really looking forward to the official opening of Bunjil Place and to be able to see this massive project come to fruition.

“With the opening now imminent, I hope you’re all as excited as I am to step foot inside in the near future and experience all Bunjil Place has to offer,” he said.

Community News Immerse yourself in your community Expressions of Interest are now open to be on a panel that determines the delivery of grant applications and award recipients within the City of Casey.

Casey residents can now apply to be a Community Selection Panel Member, which entitles them to a two year term on a volunteering based board for grant allocations and awards.

Expressions of Interest will close on Monday 11 September with an induction evening for new panel members to be held on Wednesday 1 November.

Council Plan now live online The City of Casey’s 2017-21 Council Plan and accompanying strategic documents are now live online following the launch of the Our Future website.

Council is proud to present the digital edition of these documents, which were developed through one of Council’s biggest ever community consultation exercises, the Casey People’s Panel and Casey Next.

Casey ARC car park works Further upgrades to the Casey ARC car park will take place from Tuesday 25 July.

Bunjil Place builder Multiplex will construct a road that will run down the rear of the Casey ARC carpark into the basement of the Bunjil Place carpark, as well as build a loading dock behind Casey ARC. Norm Avard first started teaching at Cranbourne Secondary College in 1992.

Norm Avard was the master of the woodworking room at Cranbourne Secondary for 15 years.

Norm Avard was much beloved by the students at Cranbourne Secondary and was always up for a laugh.

George Massouris said Norm was a great colleague to have; always happy to lend a hand.

“He was a pretty loveable guy,” Mr Massouris said.

“He was always was our Santa at end of year functions because he had the beard and the look and is honoured on our 15-year service honour board.”

Mr Massouris said Norm was always up for a joke and found creative ways to get a laugh out of people.

“He was famous for writing notes for students to go to the office on blocks of wood and we

The Cranbourne Secondary College and wider Cranbourne community are mourning the loss of a great teacher and all around top bloke, Norm Avard.

Norman Richard Avard, affectionately known as Normie to his students and colleagues, passed away after a long battle with cancer on Wednesday 12 July.

He was the woodworking teacher at Cranbourne Secondary College for 15 years and was well-liked by staff and students at the school.

Tributes have flowed for Norm on social media with people from far and wide expressing their condolences to the Avard family.

Past students, friends and families have shared memories of a lovable man who loved his footy and his teaching as much as he loved his bright yellow kombi van.

Norm was a loving husband to wife Helly and a dedicated father to five children who have remembered their dad as a man who cared deeply for his family.

Norm’s youngest son Tony Avard, 29, said his dad was a rock for the family who was always there when they needed him.

“Dad was, and us kids found him to be, everybody’s ear and he would listen to everyone,” he said.

“We found him to be a compass; he would never tell you what to do but he would guide you along a path and never said ‘I told you so’ if you went another way.”

“He was always there, always dad, always he went to everything, and was a very hands-on dad.”

Tony Avard said his dad was not afford to show how proud he was on his kids and always encouraged them to be who they are at heart.

“He had five kids but raised five individuals; we have similarities because we are family but we are all very clearly individuals and that was a big motivator for dad.”

Norm’s second eldest son Brose Avard also has fond memories of their ‘hands-on’ dad and his no-nonsense approach to parenting.

“Dad was very hands on; he got us all up and ready for school in the morning, usually by bellowing our name through our open bedroom door,” Brose Avad said.

“He’d make breakfast and send us on our way before heading to school himself. On Mondays he would pop home at lunchtime to put the weekly roast in the oven for dinner that night.”

“On weekends he would drive us to footy, cricket, the church to play music, or anywhere else we needed to go.”

Norm Avard was best known at Cranbourne Secondary College as a teacher that had the respect of his students for his sensible demeanour and fair treatment.

“He was tough with his students and spoke in a casual manner and earned their respect,” Brose said.

“He was once told by a vice-principal; ‘Norm, if you are going to swear around the kids, could you only use the word once? It’s easier to defend that way’.”

Norm was loved and respected by the whole school community from the moment he started there in 1995 to when we stepped down from teaching duties in 2007.

“He was a pretty straightforward kind of guy, not like a regular teacher but more like a tradie; a bit more laid-back.”

“He was also a mad Collingwood supporter and would always talk footy with anyone that would listen.”

Norm Avard was farewelled by family and friends on Wednesday 19 July at the David W. Bull Funeral Home in Cranbourne.

The family have asked in lieu of flowers that donations to Ward 5G North of Frankston hospital would be preferred.

Neal Corcoran, former student, sent a personal message to Brose Avard and the family recounting how Norm had become his favourite teacher.

“Norm was my favourite throughout my years of schooling,” Mr Corcoran said.

“I was bullied quite a lot for the first few years and he always kept an eye on me in woodwork/metalwork and gave me a nickname that stuck to this day.”

“He really made a difference for me in those years and was the only reason I did woodwork. He passes me even though I was s*** - couldn’t do woodwork to save my life but in a way he saved my life as I knew I was always safe in his class.”

“A truly lovely man and I will be thinking of you in the coming weeks.”

Another former woodwork student of Mr Avard’s, Peter Douglas said students simply warmed to him.

“Like many others, Norm’s classes were always something I looked forward to,“ Peter said.

“In a funny way, he was really humble in his ability to connect with students and get them interested in what he was teaching.”

“He could be funny but get a message through at the same time, which is why he was such an outstanding teacher.

“I’m sure he put countless students on the right path, both in their careers and in their lives.”

“He was one of a kind and he’ll be sorely missed.”

Hampton goes to health mode Hampton Secondary College students have set a healthy example for a group of younger visitors.

The college’s senior VCAL students helped create and run a health expo for primary school students on well-being, meditation, healthy hearts and mental health on 22 June.

The expo was open for students and parents at River Gum Primary School.

Student leaders from River Gum Primary School also collaborated on the expo.

A supermarket chain is joining a drive for a charity that redistributes its surplus fresh food.

Coles supermarkets in Hallam, Berwick, Berwick Central, Fountain Gate and Endeavour Hills have donated nearly 100,000 kilograms of food to SecondBite in the past 12 months.

SecondBite has supplied that food to charities such as Berwick Church of Christ’s crisis food pantry program.

In a new appeal, Coles customers can buy $2 donation cards for SecondBite.

Each card contributes to the equivalent of eight healthy meals, according to the charity.

SecondBite chief executive Jim Mullan said more funding was required to pay for operational costs such as fuel, transport and refrigeration.

“By donating to SecondBite, people can help us to reach more people experiencing hardship.”

The charity is reporting a growth in demand for food assistance due to family breakdown, social isolation and depression.

Coles state general manager Michael Mackenzie said too many people couldn’t afford nutritious food for themselves and their families.

“By raising funds for SecondBite, we hope we can help get more meals on the table for people in need,” he said.

“I want young people to start taking pride in themselves and have a bit of respect and look after themselves because at the moment they are losing their way.”

Cr Flannery admits he has never served in any branch of the Australian Defence Force but said he wouldn’t hesitate to sign up to prove his point.

“I didn’t get to do national service when I was younger and I have been employed all my life but if I have to go to prove a point and to lead by example I would definitely go,” he said.

“I wouldn’t hesitate to go for 12 moths or two years to put my money where my mouth is because it is unfair for me to talk about it when I have never been involved.”

Cr Flannery also believes that drafting young people into the armed forces would help combat the threat of terrorism in Australia.

“With terrorism on the rise, having young people do national service can then back up police and if we have young people in their army uniforms walking around the street it’ll deter terrorism,” he said.

“They will also have direction in which way they want to go and we can give them the tools to go out and seek further education or work lives.”

The City of Casey has unanimously passed a motion to call on federal politicians to introduce compulsory national service for all Australians 18 years of age.

Councillor Rex Flannery raised the notice of motion at a Casey Council meeting on Tuesday 18 July, after returning from a trip to Israel in June.

He said speaking to young people in Israel, where citizens are automatically drafted into the military for three years at the age of 18, inspired him to have the same discussion in Australia.

“I thought I would put it up and open the topic for discussion,” he said.

“I think we’re losing the war on crime as Melbourne is the number one crime city in Australia and we face things like alcohol abuse, one-punch attacks, stabbings, and murders; everyday someone is getting shot, domestic violence, and drug abuse, depression in kids and youth suicide, just so many things.

“The government is ploughing so much money into all these areas but we are not getting any results, as far as I am concerned.”

He says he doesn’t want to ship young people off overseas, but thinks a stint in the defence forces would help a lot of young people stay away from crime.

Cr Flannery also claimed serving in the military in Afghanistan would be safer for a lot of young people than being in Melbourne.

“When you really think about it, the number of soldiers in Afghanistan that have been killed, it is safer to go over and serve in the Australian Army in Afghanistan than it is to walk the streets of Australia,” he said.

“I don’t want anyone going and fighting overseas but young people

Cr Crestani spoke about how she had some conflicting feelings regarding the motion, despite helping Cr Flannery compose it.

“When I got home my heart sank because I am a mother and if we helped get this off the ground my almost 14-year-old son would soon be eligible for this,” she said.

“The conflict between mother and community leader is sometime at odds but it is really reassuring to think we can give this opportunity to young people.”

“I whole-heartedly support this and I think it’s for the best of the nation to strengthen us and our community.”

Councillor and co-deputy mayor Susan Serey said national conscription would give the youth of Australia more respect for themselves and others in the community.

“This is a great step forward,” she said.

“We have all talked about young people doing something constructive and building more love for our country because there are some of us in the community that don’t have that and they take it for granted.”

“It’s important we encourage our young people to realise what we have, let them find their way, get paid for two years and serve or be trained.”

The City of Casey will write to Federal Member for Holt Anthony Byrne, Member for La Trobe Jason Wood, Member for Flinders Greg Hunt and Defence Minister Marise Payne.

The letters will call on these members of Federal Parliament to consider introducing compulsory national service to all Australian citizens and permanent residents when they reach 18 years of age.

Cash found among Opinion donated items Lenscape

By Victoria Stone-Meadows Police are looking for someone who may have donated more than what was intended to a charity donation store in Cranbourne last week.

A quantity of cash was found among many other items that were donated to a charity store on High Street, Cranbourne, between Thursday 13 July and Saturday 15 July.

The honest staff at the store discovered the money while sorting out items, and handed it over to the Cranbourne police station.

Police are attempting to find the owner of the money, and anyone who may have donated goods and accidentally left the cash behind is urged to contact Cranbourne police station on 5991 0600.

Breaking barriers over coffee cups

By Victoria Stone-Meadows The Hampton Park Uniting Church will be hosting Coffee with a Muslim in Casey later this month in an effort to dispel myths and misconceptions that have grown around the faith.

Event organiser a local Casey resident Inaz Jarif said she shot the idea from Sherene Hassan at the Islamic Museum of Australia who held the first coffee with a Muslim event.

Ms Hassan held the event following comments from TV personality Sonya Kruger who called for an end to people of the Islamic faith migrating to Australia.

Ms Jarif said the whole idea behind the Coffee with a Muslim event was to build better communities by bringing people of all walks of life together in an informal setting.

“It could be argued locally and nationally, there is a growing anti-Muslim sentiment in Australia,” she said.

“Having been exposed to it myself and witnessing it happening to our young people, and with all that happened last year in Casey, I chose to do this as an open invitation to the community to build a better community.”

Ms Jarif participated in many of the sessions hosted by the Islamic Museum of Australia and said the sessions were a great way for people to get a better understanding of each other.

“I participated in a lot of those sessions and it was a really positive way to get to know things,” she said.

“Not just for the people learning and hearing from us, but the other way too; we learnt a lot from the people that come along.”

“I am hoping for an open and positive dialogue that can build a better bond between people, and for our children and future generations, we should be aiming to leave a better society for them than the one we came into.”

In December last year, the Hampton Park Uniting Church hosted a Christmas dinner that was staffed by members of the local Muslim community.

Ms Jarif said she couldn’t do the work she did without the support of Reverend Mat Harry at the church and the support he gave for her initiatives.

Reverend Harry said he was more than happy to lend a hand and space for these events as they reflected the church’s mission in building stronger and more connected communities.

“I think it’s important for everyone to love their neighbour as themselves,” he said.

“My experience has always been,

when you get to know people who are different from yourself, you gain and understanding of your shared humanity and that leads to friendship and a lack of fear.”

Reverend Harry said he was hopeful those that came along to the event did so with an open mind and open heart.

“I hope it is a success and people who come along open their hearts to people who are different from themselves, and gain a new perspective and break down some barriers,” he said.

City of Casey Council will undertake additional traffic management measures along Somerville Road in Hampton Park to tackle people speeding along the road.

Recent traffic surveys have shown people continue to travel above the speed limit along the road outside the primary school, despite council implementing traffic management methods previously.

Council has previously narrowed the road in places installing slow point intersection treatments in the 2004-'05 financial year but drivers have still been found to be travelling over the speed limit.

In an attempt to combat people speeding on the road, council will install a number of additional traffic calming measures to the road.

A centre median type line marking with skid resistant coloured overlay will be placed at the corner where Somerville Road continues on to Vanessa Drive to slow vehicles negotiating this corner.

Council will also paint the noses of all the slow point intersection treatments in yellow to highlight their location to oncoming motorists.

The signs on the approaches to the slow point intersection treatments will be duplicated on both sides of the road and an advisory 20km/h sign will be placed as a supplementary sign under the existing island warning signs.

At the entrance to the school zone, where the 40km/h zone commences on both approaches to the school, council will install coloured pavement in the road with wording “School Zone.”

Somerville Road will also be included in Councils Speed Awareness Mobile Trailer Program to reinforce to motorists their speeds in relation to the speed limit.

Council have also passed on the data from their traffic surveys to Casey Highway Patrol and requested more police presence in the area.

Councillor Damien Rosario who moved the recommendation at a council meeting on Tuesday 18 July said the road was clearly a problem.

“I am very pleased to see these outcomes of the safety initiatives conducted along Somerville Road,” he said.

“It is a very well used road with a lot of cars and some of the speeds surveyed have been 8km/h over the speed limit.”

While Cr Rosario said he was happy to see the safety measures of the road improved, he said council would keep a close eye on the traffic on the road, moving forward.

“We have taken the concerns of residents on board and I think we have done our due diligence,” he said.

“We will keep an eye on it and see what happens in future.”

Counting on Avis for a full century

By Victoria Stone-Meadows A resident of Langford Grange in Cranbourne East has reached a remarkable milestone and celebrated her 100th birthday on 10 July.

Formerly of the Pakenham and Officer areas, Mrs Avis Musgrove reached her centenary with a celebration from friends at the aged care facility and her surviving family.

Mrs Musgrove chalks her longevity up to living a good life, staying healthy and being kind to others along the way.

Always one to practise what she preached, Mrs Musgrove was heavily involved in the church and communities where she lived.

She held volunteer roles with the Probus club, helped out with meals on wheels and was a Sunday school teacher.

She helped to raise money for students at the Sunday school to buy books and pens and other things they needed.

Mrs Musgrove and her late husband Eric were blessed with two sons, Kenneth and Eric Jnr, though Ken Musgrove’s life was tragically cut

short in an accident in 2003.

Mrs Musgrove said her husband and sons were the light of her life and both her and Eric Snr loved them dearly.

“My husband Eric was a very determined man but he was very kind to me,” she said.

“We had our sons and he idolised his sons.”

Ms Musgrove’s surviving son Eric Musgrove Jnr said his mother used to tell him and his late brother stories from when she grew up on a farm.

“She was born on a farming property and she and her sister used to ride their ponies to school because that was the only form of transport,” he said.

“When they used to go do the family shopping they would go by horse and buggy and in those days they only had wood fires and lanterns in the house.”

Mr Musgrove said his mother was a very caring woman who had been many times blessed with a growing family she cared for very deeply.

“She was a very caring and hard-working, and brought us up in an old school kind of way,” he said.

“She was a great mother to both Ken and I and now she has got grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great children.”

Mr Musgrove said he was very pleased his mother had reached 100 years of age and thanked the staff at Langford Grange for caring for her.

“We are all very happy she has reached it and is still enjoying life,” he said.

“We are also very thankful to Langford Grange aged care for the qualities of the facilities and the great efforts of the staff there; it has really helped her longevity.”

Ms Musgrove herself said she was feeling good about reaching 100 years of age and had some advice for younger generations.

“I feel well and I am lucky I am still in good health,” she said.

“My advice is to live a good life and try to be kind to everyone and help where it is needed,” she said.

Pet adoption fees slashed

By Victoria Stone-Meadows RSPCA Victoria is dropping its adoption prices this coming weekend in a bid to find homes for all the animals that are crowded into their adoption centres.

The adoption drive will include the RSPCA Peninsula centre in Pearcedale which has more than 80 animals waiting to find their forever homes.

RSPCA Peninsula has around 60 cats and kittens, 16 dogs and puppies and six rabbits currently available for adoption.

RSPCA Victoria CEO Dr Liz Walker said the RSPCA wanted to encourage anyone interested in a new pet to consider adoption.

“We would love to see all of our animals adopted this weekend because pets belong in a home, not a shelter,” she said.

“We’re hoping the reduced fees will encourage those considering a new addition to their family to take the next step.”

All of the animals up for adoption this weekend will be desexed, microchipped, vaccinated, health and behaviour checked.

The usual RSPCA paperwork will still apply to all adop-

tions to make sure each animal is matched to the right household and both animal and owner find a perfect match.

The rock-bottom adoption fees will enable people to adopt a dog over four months old for just $50 and puppies for $100 as opposed to the usual $380 for dogs and $420 for puppies.

Cats and kittens will also be reduced to $30 and $50 respectively for adoption with rabbit and guinea pig fees only $30.

Mature cats and dogs over 10 years of age will have no adoption fee during the drive.

Hungry kids find a feed

By Victoria Stone-Meadows Cranbourne Park shopping centre has teamed up with Cranbourne-based education charity the Aiding Casey Education (ACE) Foundation to supply meal replacement shakes to hungry secondary school students.

The ACE Foundation is a not for profit organisation that exists solely on donations that provides assistance to students across the City of Casey.

They currently provide 2500 meal replacement drinks every month to 12 Secondary Schools in the region and Cranbourne Park Shopping Centre are helping them achieve this goal.

Retail Manager at Cranbourne Park Zoe Picone said the shopping centre was proud to partner with the ACE Foundation to help hungry students achieve their best in school.

“We not only wanted to support their programs but also raise awareness about the foundation and the community programs they are involved in providing our youth opportunities to grow, develop and learn,” she said.

“We love everything ACE stands for and have a huge respect for Leon Shapero and Teresa Muratore who work tirelessly to support our community.”

The ATO has released the 2014-’15 Taxation Statistics, revealing data on Australia’s most charitable individuals, highest earners and the richest postcodes.

The latest report shows that with an average taxable income of $189,293, the postcode with the highest average taxable income was 2027, which includes the Sydney suburbs of Darling Point, Edgecliff, HMAS Rushcutters and Point Piper.

Similar to previous years, surgeons topped the list of occupations with the highest average taxable income of $377,044, followed by anaesthetists, internal medicine specialists and financial dealers.

The most charitable region in 2014-’15 was New South Wales, with more than 1.46 million people claiming a total of more than $1 billion, which is an average donation of $295.60 for each NSW resident who lodged a tax return.

Animal rights group the Coalition for the Protection of Racehorses has called on Cranbourne MP Jude Perera to oppose jumps racing, following the death of a horse at Cranbourne earlier this month.

Advocates from CPR wrote to Mr Perera calling for him to take a stand against the sport after sevenyear-old gelding Just Junior threw his rider during a steeplechase trial on 3 July.

Racing Victoria confirmed in a statement that the horse Just Junior suffered a leg fracture during the trial race and was subsequently put down.

“Just Junior was humanely euthanised by the on-course veterinarian at the Cranbourne Training Centre on Monday 3 July after sustaining an irreparable leg fracture,” an RV spokesperson said.

“As is standard practice, the Jumps Review Panel has reviewed the trial in which Just Junior’s rider was dislodged but the horse did not fall.”

“As Just Junior continued

to jump throughout the trial when riderless, the panel was unable to categorically establish at which point the injury was sustained.

“Racing Victoria’s thoughts are with Just Junior’s owners, his trainer Ciaron Maher and his stable staff who cared greatly for the horse and were terribly saddened by his passing.”

Communications manager for CPR Ward Young said it is the responsibility of Mr Perera to support a ban of all types of jumps racing following this incident.

“A total of eight jumps horses have been killed in Mr Perera’s electorate since 2010 - the year when Racing Victoria backflipped on banning jumps racing,” Mr Young said.

“Given that Mr Perera only holds his extremely marginal seat by 1871 votes, I hope that he will act in the best interest of horses and the community, and push for a ban on jumps racing.

“This ‘sport’ is 20 times more dangerous than flat racing, and if they were held as often as flat races, a horse would be killed at every race meet.”

“Never accept it as your life.”

This was reformed ice user James O’Keefe’s advice to young people struggling with drug addiction.

The Warragul 28-year-old turned to Hallam’s Youth YOU Program four months ago to get clean.

When he was 21, he weighed 55 kilograms and was high four or five days a week. He’d get paid on Thursdays.

“I was broke on Friday and my account was overdrawn on Saturday,” he said.

James gave up drugs, but then split with his partner of five years and fell back into old habits.

“I knew that what I was doing was no good for me,” he said.

An old school friend had completed the Youth YOU Program, developed by former drug addict Glenn Munso. It involves gym sessions and mentoring, plus online advice.

James bought Glenn’s book, Drugs Do Not Discriminate.

“I tried to read it quite a few times but I couldn’t get through the pages, and I felt guilty reading the book while I was using,” James said.

“I decided to get clean.

“For about three days, I had a really foggy brain.

“I couldn’t accomplish anything I wanted to do.”

James reached out to Glenn for

mentoring class on Tuesday and I do the same thing on a Saturday.

“I’ve lived my whole live with my bank account overdrawn.

“Now I have savings, now I have nice clothes. I can eat out, I can do those things now.

“When you’re on drugs you don’t do that, you can’t do it.”

Seeing results in the gym has kept James motivated.

“I’ve put on 10 kilograms in four months,” he said.

“That was a one-year goal for me.”

His top piece of advice to others struggling with addiction was to start their day with a good choice.

“It doesn’t have to be major just a glass of water,” he said.

“That good choice will snowball into more good choices.

“Seek out help, don’t stop trying to get clean.”

Glenn has been touring Australia to promote his book and will reach Dandenong on 14 September.

He said the audiences included families who didn’t know how to help a loved one, drug addicts seeking help, and kids “to show them the realness of what’s going on in their society, and educate them about drugs”.

“A lot of people talk about the problem,” he said.

“It’s more showing people the solution - giving people hope, inspiration and showing them that that label doesn’t define the rest of their future.”

‘Cool cap’ helps The effects of cancer are widespread.

Not only does the disease wreak havoc on a person’s body, it can strip them of their confidence too with hair loss an often unavoidable result of chemotherapy.

However, with the purchase of a DigniCap machine, St John of God Berwick Hospital is hoping that the risk of hair loss will be significantly reduced for its patients undergoing chemotherapy.

Developed by Swedish company Dignitana, the DigniCap is a tight-fitting moulded, silicon cooling cap that is designed to lower the temperature of the scalp to reduce blood flow and consequently, the impact of chemotherapy on the hair follicle.

The action of chemotherapy to reduce or cease cancer growth can also impact on hair growth - the ‘cool cap’ seeks to protect the hair follicle from this.

Hair loss is considered by most patients as a challenging side effect of chemotherapy treatment as it impacts on a person’s confidence to socialise and serves as a visible reminder of their cancer diagnosis.

St John of God Berwick Hospital embarked on a mission to raise approximately $40,000 to purchase the DigniCap machine in an effort to improve the self-esteem and wellbeing of its patients.

Funded through generous donations to St John of God Berwick Hospital, the Oncology Unit has recently been able to purchase the

“The most positive thing about the scalp cooling cap is giving our patients choice and control over their treatment options,” St John of God Berwick Hospital Oncology Unit Manager Lisa Marchetti said.

“Often when patients have been given a cancer diagnosis they can feel they have lost control over their lives, so having the option to control hair loss is a small but poignant victory in their fight against cancer.”

Although the process extends treatment times, according to Dig-

nitana, the technology has been well received, with eight out of 10 patients being satisfied with the significant reduction (and in some cases, elimination) of chemotherapy-induced alopecia.

“It’s a free service that we hope will offer our patients improved quality of life and create a more positive outlook about their treatment plan,” Lisa said.

St John of God has launched a recruitment campaign for new staff.

Jobs drive for new hospital A campaign has begun to recruit more than 200 new caregivers for the new St John of God Berwick Hospital.

The existing hospital employs 387 caregivers. These numbers are set to grow once the new hospital, under construction, opens its doors on 18 January 2018.

Job opportunities will be advertised from 17 July for four weeks.

A registration of interest portal was created on the hospital’s website in late 2016 for those interested in gaining employment. More than 2000 people registered.

Acting CEO Lisa Evans said that the recruitment marketing campaign, including social media, radio, print and internal promotions, would capture the essence of what it is to be a caregiver at St John of God Berwick, including the unique sense of compassionate care that the hospital is extremely proud of.

Over the past 12 months the hospital’s Business Development team has engaged with current specialist doctors to identify those who are interested in increasing their work at the hospital.

“Discussion with a number of new medical specialists has also occurred and we look forward to introducing our new doctors to the community,” Ms Evans said.

Sixty-five businesses are in the running for this year’s Casey Cardinia Business Awards.

A total of 94 applications were received for the awards, which are now in their fourth year.

City of Casey economic development manager David Wilkinson said 28 businesses had applied for two categories while a further 47 businesses had been nominated for the people’s choice award bringing the total number of applicants and nominees to 141.

Mr Wilkinson said he was pleased by the number of new businesses that were engaging with the awards for the first time.

“Twenty-eight businesses are new nominees. That means there are a healthy number of brand new businesses applying for the awards,” Mr Wilkinson said.

He also welcomed the strong interest in the people’s choice award, which attracted close to 4500 votes.

“The surprisingly strong interest in the people’s choice award means there is interest being generated at a community level in the whole awards program.”

Legends play for Shaun

By Russell Bennett “We want to have more of these games, but we don’t want them to have to be in memory of anyone.”

They were the simple, heartfelt words from Matt Runnalls as he looked out over the Hampton Park junior footy ground on Sunday at the second ever running of the club’s ‘Legends Game’, which welcomed a host of its favourite sons back to the fold.

Former players and club people from all works of life converged on the ground for the game, this year held in memory of former player Shaun Ross who took his own life late last year aged just 22.

The lovable larrikin who’d give the shirt off his own back to anyone in need, made an unforgettable impact on anyone close to him, and thousands across the south east will never quite be the same again. They won’t get to hear his laugh again, or see his smile, or simply confide in one of life’s good guys.

Shaun had a heart of gold, but his was a troubled life from a young age.

Yet through the darkness of his passing, there is a light - one that shone bright on Sunday.

The Legends Game carried a special significance on the weekend, serving as a way to honour Shaun and direct the spotlight onto suicide prevention and mental health awareness among young people.

The day was held in partnership with Mindfull Australia, a suicide prevention charity founded by Shaun’s great friend, and former club-mate at the Cora Lynn Football Netball Club, Matt Runnalls.

Mindfull’s purpose is to encourage those affected by mental health battles to come out of the shadows of stigma through self-acceptance and education of the wider community.

At the time he founded Mindfull, Matt was a 24-year-old tradie who played country footy. He had no real financial worries, his professional life was in order, and he had a strong network of family and friends.

But since he was 17, he battled severe anxiety and depression, which led to several suicide attempts. Between the ages of 12 and 25, he’d also lost six mates to suicide.

On Saturday, the teams which took to the field for the Legends Game were made up largely of Shaun’s mates and it was only fitting that the final result was a draw.

Following the game, there was a dinner and presentation in the clubrooms from both Matt, and Shaun’s mum Bec. “If you could take a positive out of such a horrific situation, it was losing that second mate to suicide that enabled me to go and get the help and treatment that I required because I was so scared

I’d be the next statistic,” Matt told the room.

“For anyone who knew me growing up, I was very similar to Shaun - I was a smart alec, confident, bubbly, and I couldn’t understand how life could get so bad.

“I want everyone in the room to do me one solid - remember those we’ve lost by their smile, their laugh, their humour, and in Shaun’s case his shit jokes.

Remember not to associate the word suicide with them or remember them by their struggle. I know I’m damn lucky and forever grateful I was part of those six mates of mine’s lives.

“Only by coming together in unity do we have the chance to bring change and ensure nobody else travels their journey alone and lives a life debilitated and exhausted by their thoughts and feelings.

“I fight this brain-pain tooth and nail every day, and I won’t tell you that it’s easy because it’s not. But I will reiterate that it’s so worthwhile. You’re loved, you’re worthwhile, you’re unique, and I love that. Be here tomorrow.”

Bec thanked both the Redbacks and Mindfull for holding Sunday’s event in Shaun’s honour.

“It eases the pain slightly knowing that Shaun touched so many people’s hearts in his short 22 years, and was loved by so many people,” she said.

“Footy was the one thing Shaun looked forward to every week. It was the one time he could completely lose himself and forget about the pain and free his mind.

“Most of you knew him as a happygo-lucky young man with a wicked sense of humour who was always the joker.

You got to see the most amazing side of our boy - his enormous heart and soul, his humour, and laughter.”

Bec said if there was one positive to come out of losing Shaun, it was the determination and drive she gained to help anybody with their battles with mental illness and to try and prevent anyone going through the grief that she endures daily.

“The one thing I can say to each and every one of you is to hug your kids and tell them you love them every single day,” she said.

“Life is not guaranteed, and life is short. Look after your kids and if you sense something isn’t right, push and fight to find the answers.

“If anyone is out there suffering alone, please speak up, please seek help, and never be ashamed of asking for it or expressing how you feel.”

Mixed bag for Casey Cavaliers - win some, lose some

By Russell Bennett The Casey Cavaliers women’s sides endured a mixed weekend of Big V basketball with the Division 1 side losing its clash in Traralgon but the Youth League 2 team recording a gritty win, both on Sunday.

The Division 1 women’s side head-

ed to Traralgon to take on the Latrobe City Energy and started encouragingly - taking a 19-13 lead into the first change, and extending that once again to lead 34-27 at the main break.

But the home side came out firing in the second half to come away with an eventual eight-point win 66-58.

Laura Pickering was one of the standouts for the home side with 18 points and 10 boards while Rebecca Borham, Rebecca Magdich, and Lauren Tuplin shouldered the bulk of the scoring load for the Cavs with 16, 12, and 11 points respectively.

Also on Sunday, the Cavs’ Youth

League 2 women’s side held on to claim a five-point win over Western Port at Dromana Secondary College, 56-51.

After a fast start - leading 19-8 at the end of the first - the Cavs battled for the next three periods but ultimately had just enough to hold on.

The Cavs held the Steelers to just 25 per cent shooting from the floor, while also comfortably winning the rebound battle over the home side in the defensive struggle.

It was a gutsy team effort all around from the Cavs, with Alyssa Weston the leading scorer with 16 points.

A full-strength Dandenong Stingrays outfit withstood an impressive final quarter push from the Northern Knights at Shepley Oval on Saturday to come away eventual 29-point winners, 14.5(89) to 8.12(60).

The impressive depth of the Rays' list has been on display all season, but on Saturday the side showed just what it was capable of with a full arsenal of weapons at its disposal.

With 10 changes from Round 12, the Rays led all game before holding on for a near five-goal win after tiring in the last.

They led by 46 points at three-quarter time before the Knights charged their way back gallantly in the last.

TAC Cup mainstays Luke Davies-Uniacke, Oscar Clavarino, Hunter Cark, Mason De Wit and Bailey Morrish were all particularly influential for the Rays, while Riley D’Arcy finished with four goals and provided a real target inside 50.

Co-captains Clavarino and Josh Bateman were stellar in defence for Dandenong, while the likes of Jesse Davies and Angus Paterson also stood strong against the Knights’ forwards.

“The game really could have gone either way in the end - we were fortunate enough to get across the line today due to the work rate in the first half, and that gives the boys

some real confidence as we come to the back end of the TAC Cup season, ” Stingrays coach Craig Black told the club’s website post-match.

“With 10 changes you never know what to expect - it’s the first time since Round 1 we’ve been able to basically pick from our full list.

“The focus the boys are bringing each week, no matter who plays, is very impressive.”

The last quarter saw the Stingrays go in with two less players with De Wit gone for the day with a back injury, while Aiden Bonar’s day was over due to pre-planned game time.

Bonar was responsible for one of the day’s biggest highlights when the youngster, who has missed the past two years dealing with some major injuries, marked strongly and kicked truly from 35 metres to register the first goal of the game barely two minutes into the contest. His team mates mobbed him, showing just what his return meant to both he and the group.

But by contrast the Knights slotted four last-quarter goals to just two from the Stingrays, who were down on rotations.

Still, the victory puts the Stingrays in good stead, effectively securing a finals spot before enjoying a week off due to the TAC Cup bye.

Doveton boy and former Dandenong Stingray, Josh Battle, made his AFL debut on Friday night for St Kilda in front of more than 45,000 people at Etihad Stadium against Essendon.

Still in high school at Haileybury Keysborough campus, Battle has been in impressive form recently in the VFL, and got an opportunity to show the Saints fans what he was made of in the absence of suspended forward Tim Membrey. Although it was a dirty night for Battle’s Saints - going down by 61-points - he provided a rare bright moment that suggests he

will be a pivotal part of Alan Richardson’s plans for the future.

In the third quarter, with the Saints having kicked just two goals and 11 behinds, Battle found space in the forward 50 and marked strongly 40 metres out, directly in front.

He duly converted the major, with his team-mates rushing to congratulate his first AFL goal.

“It was pretty good to kick my first goal, but we were down so it would have been a bit better if we were winning, but what can you do?” Battle

said post-match.

Although his side fell in disappointing fashion, Battle said the build-up and excitement was something he will always remember.

“It was obviously a disappointing result, but the week was really special and I guess it’s something I’ve dreamed of since I was a young kid, and to play my first game out on the big stage was pretty phenomenal,” he said.

Battle finished his first game of AFL football with five disposals, two marks and a goal.

Eagles future up in the air on licences

By David Nagel AFL Victoria’s aim to align clubs in the VFL Women’s competition with those in the VFL Men’s could see Cranbourne handing over its VFLW licence to the Casey Demons.

Informal talks have taken place between the two clubs that call Casey Fields home, with South East Football Netball League (SEFNL) club Cranbourne taking an open and honest approach with its VFL neighbour.

The Eagles can either resist the change, or take the option of working closely with the Demons to make the transition a success.

There is still a lot of water to go under the bridge before the licence changes hands, but Cranbourne president Shane Baker said he would have mixed emotions if the move was to go ahead.

“From a club aspect it would

be disappointing if it did happen,” Baker said.

“We’ve put a lot of time and effort into out women’s program, built from one team to three, and created a great atmosphere around women’s football at the club.”

But he said his club would not stand in the way of progress.

“If the girls in our VFL Women’s side are going to get access to better facilities that help improve their football - it would be selfish of us to stand in their way.”

Cranbourne currently has three women’s teams competing with the VFLW side complemented with teams in division one and two of South Eastern Women’s Football (SEWF).

If the move were to go ahead, Cranbourne would still maintain a presence in women’s football with the two teams competing in SEWF likely to continue into the future.

Night grand final looms

By David Nagel The AFL South East Commission met on Monday night where it was expected to ratify a decision to host this year’s South East Football Netball League (SEFNL) grand final under lights at Casey Fields on Saturday 16 September.

SEFNL clubs corresponded via email on Friday 14 July, confirming that AFLSE had made contact and confirmed the decision to make the night grand final a reality.

All nine clubs in SEFNL - both football and netball - were against the move from the traditional day grand final held at the venue of a member club.

Cranbourne president Shane Baker said the clubs were very disappointed with the move.

“There just seems to be no rhyme or reason for this to go ahead, we thought we were being heard but obviously our collective voice fell on deaf ears,” Baker said.

The clubs last hope to stop the night grand final from proceeding came in the form of SEFNL Chairman and AFLSE Commissioner Ryan Ford, who went in to bat for the clubs at the meeting.

The clubs have identified Beaconsfield, Berwick or Pakenham as their preferred option to host the biggest day on the calendar.

AFLSE review deadline extended AFL South East is still three weeks away from releasing its final recommendations from its Senior Competition Review.

Region General Manager John Anderson sent this memo to the clubs on Monday explaining the reasons for the delay, with the original date set down for the end of July.

Seas of junior netballers shine Casey Netball Association hosted its inaugural Junior Tournament at the newly developed Casey Stadium on Sunday.

More than 1000 netballers from all over Victoria participated in the event, with large support crews also enjoying the first class facility. There were in excess of 3500 people cheering on the teams who had travelled from far and wide.

A total of 300 11-and-under players enjoyed a round robin of matches with the focus on participation. Mascot ‘Foxy’, from the Melbourne Vixens came to cheer them on, putting a smile on many young faces.

There was a sea of colour at the 11-and-under presentation as each player was presented with a medallion and a Casey Netball show bag full of goodies.

The Salvation Army were also on hand providing free water for all players throughout the day. Casey Netball is excited about its future partnership and how it can enhance its community relationships and provide support for those in need.

CNA secretary Rebekah Bogos said the day was great success with a band of volunteers keen to show off a first-class facility.

“The day was made possible by the tireless work of a small team of volunteers,” Bogos said.

High fives for ’Pies round

By David Nagel A rejuvenated Narre Warren has cast fresh light on the South East Football Netball League with a stunning 79-point victory over third-placed Beaconsfield at Holm Park Reserve.

The two teams had differing form lines heading in: the fifth-placed Magpies copping a 49-point slap across the face from Berwick, while the Eagles had wins over Officer, Pakenham and Hampton Park sandwiched between two byes.

But it was five weeks of easy footy that left the Eagles vulnerable on the weekend - and the Magpies pounced, silencing the doubters and making a strong play for a coveted double chance at the end of the season.

“I delved into our history and I don’t think since midway through 2009 have we had our backs against the wall as strongly as we did leading into this match,” Narre Warren coach Heath Black said.

“This group didn’t want to be the one that miss out on finals and they responded in great fashion; it was a win that was definitely built above the shoulders. I knew we had it in us, but there was definitely some self-doubt creeping in, even from me as coach. It’s been tough going as a coach, but we scaled things back to a simple game plan, and the players were outstanding. I feel very relieved for the players.”

The teams went goal for goal until midway through the first term before the Magpies surged, kicking the next six goals of the match. They maintained that advantage until three-quarter time before rubber-stamping their victory with a

The Magpies had many fine players, none better than Mitch Cox who played electrifying footy to finish with four goals. Aaron Wilson also kicked four, while a midfield brigade led by Dean Kelly, Michael Collins and Josh Tonna put the Eagles to the sword.

Despite the raging success, the Magpies will go in as underdogs against Cranbourne this week - a tag that sits comfortably with Black.

“As individuals, and as a team, we’ve shown glimpses of our best form but we haven’t been anywhere near good enough for long enough to get ahead of ourselves,” he said.

By David Nagel Narre Warren’s quest for a thirdconsecutive premiership is right on track after the Magpies stood tall for a three-goal, 43-40, victory over Beaconsfield at Holm Park Reserve.

The Magpies led by a goal at quarter time before the resurgent Eagles took a three-goal advantage to half time. The Magpies squared things away at the final break, leaving an epic final 15 minutes to decide the outcome.

The victor would become the clear challenger to Tooradin in the battle for top spot on the ladder.

“I think experience got us through in the end,” said a happy Narre Warren co-coach Greg Heinrich.

“Erin Clark is seasoned when it comes to these tough games, and it was players like her that made sure we didn’t take the foot off the pedal at any stage in the last quarter.”

Goalers Jemma Osborne (goal shooter) and Kealeigh Brown (goal attack) had big shoes to fill against the Eagles, with Gabby Dwyer, Chloe Phillips and Tayla Shannon all absent due to VNL duties.

Clark (wing defence), Bec Potalej (wing attack) and Leigh Taylor (centre) produced a strong second-half showing for the Pies, while Tracey Dell (goal keeper) had a great battle with her longtime foe Bianca Sanzaro (GS), who scored 26 of the side's 40 goals.

Ash Gill (C), Kate Murphy (WD), Dani Cameron (gial defence) and Emily Boribon (GA) were also consistent over four quarters for the Eagles.

Cranbourne has broken its run of two consecutive draws with an impressive 51-35 victory over Hampton Park at Robert Booth Reserve.

The Eagles built their lead

steadily, from five to 10 by half time, to 13 at three-quarter time before extending to 16 by the final whistle.

Hayley Galpin, Jodie Holt and Allie Oakenfull played great defensive roles in the absence of Tara Cecil and Sharni Lambden, while Mel Perrins and Nat Sparks gave great drive through the midcourt.

Megan Cripps, Bev Miller and Bec Hall tried hard for the Redbacks, who have fallen short of expectations this season.

Berwick has held off a fastfinishing Pakenham to win 54-50 at Toomuc Reserve.

Itagia Amataga (GS), Emily Wilson (GA) and Emily Pratt (WA) got the Wickers off to a flyer, leading by four goals at the first break, before the Lions dug in for the fight.

With Renae Joiner (C), Carly Saunders (WA) and Keely Wright (WD) evening up the midcourt battle the Lions matched motors with the Wickers, scoring a dozen each in the second term.

Amataga put on a clinic in the third, scoring 14 goals as the visitors stretched their advantage out to nine at the final break. The Lions surged, scoring 15-10 in the last quarter to fall four goals short of a maiden victory.

And Tooradin has retained top spot with a 50-31 triumph over ROC. The Seagulls were most impressive in the second term, scoring 15-4 to have the Kangas on the back foot. Shona Wells, Emma Iacovou, Jess Cox and Holly Gillespie shared the midcourt duties for the Gulls, while Alex Duff, Alex Maher and Dayle Willis did likewise in attack.

Laura Quinn (GD), Mel Overdyk (GK), Sam Neil (GA) and Olivia Hamilton (WA) were consistent performers for the Kangaroos. Doveton had the bye.

Cranny tuned up for this week’s blockbuster at Kalora Park with a 200-point victory over a struggling Hampton Park.

The Eagles turned on the jets in the second term, kicking 15.7 in a brilliant display.

Troy Tharle kicked nine for the winners while Dillan Bass continued a quality season in defence.

Officer has ended the finals aspirations of Tooradin, defeating the Seagulls by 14 points in the close one of the round at Starling Road.

No more than two goals separated the sides at the first three breaks, the efficient Kangaroos leading by 12 points, 11.1(67) to 8.7(55), at three quarter time. Early goals to Jesse Longmuir and Blair Allan extended the margin to 26 points before the Seagulls surged - kicking three goals in five minutes - to cut the deficit to eight. Luke Callander then kicked the sealer for the home side.

Matt Clarke kicked four for the Roos, Callander three, while Andrew Dean was dangerous up forward for the Seagulls with four majors.

And Berwick’s perfect season has continued, the Wickers defeating Pakenham by 86 points at Toomuc Reserve. Jimmy Harrison, Brody Connelly and Tim Gunn kicked three each for the Wickers while Steve Morey was the outstanding player for the Lions.

Doveton had the bye.
