Carbon fallout from a controversial industrial site has angered North Geelong residents after blanketing their properties this week.

Caroline McGrane, who lives in nearby Slevin St, said the carbon blackened parts of her home and pet dog on Monday.

“We seem to be in the firing line of that factory - I can’t even hang washing on my clothesline.”

In Brief Man stabbed Police have questioned two men over a stabbing at Norlane.

The 26-year-old male victim suffered nonlife-threatening shoulder injuries after he was stabbed during a brawl outside Melbourne Road’s The fOrT youth centre on Wednesday night, police said.

Anglesea thefts Thieves have targeted caravan parks and cars at Anglesea, according to police.

Bikes, alcohol and “other items” had all disappeared since the thefts began at the start of the month, police said.

Beach wider Authorities will truck in sand to widen a popular beach in northern Geelong later this month.

Police Minister grants for murals infuriate coalition The opposition launched a scathing attack on Police Minister Lisa Neville as she promoted State Government’s anti-graffiti projects at Corio on Thursday.

Shadow police minister Ed O’Donohue led the attack as Ms Neville announced the latest round of grants at Corio’s Multicultural Bus Shelter.

“Lisa Neville can stand in front of as much brightly coloured graffiti for a photo op as she wants,” he said.

“But the reality is that crime continues to soar in the Geelong region while funding for the crime prevention grants program has been cut under Labor.”

Mr O’Donohue said home invasions, car jackings and violent crime had “become depressingly common across the region”.

The Police Minister’s announcement on

Thursday would do nothing to prevent crime, he said.

“As Lisa Neville said herself, Victorians don’t feel safe in their homes.”

But Ms Neville said the Andrews Government’s efforts to combat graffiti would help break the cycle of youth crime.

Ms Neville announced that an Ocean Grove mural would be one of 24 projects across Victoria to share in almost $445,000 from the next round of grants.

“Graffiti affects neighbourhood appearance and community confidence in the safety and security of public places,” Ms Neville said.

“What is a cheap thrill for vandals can end up costing businesses, councils and property owners thousands of dollars to remove.”

Ms Neville made the announcement at the

multicultural bus shelter, which received $21,000 from the Labor Government’s Graffiti Prevention Grants program in 2016.

Geelong council, Victoria Police, local community groups and artists worked with young people to produce artworks to reduce graffiti at eight bus shelters in Norlane.

Since 2015, the Government has allocated nearly $1.4 million towards 72 anti-graffiti projects across Victoria.

Ms Neville also opened the $250,000 Public Safety Infrastructure Fund crime prevention projects, including lighting, CCTV and good urban design initiatives.

Geelong council applied for the fund in 2016 but the State rejected its application.

A four-year-old girl’s fingers were injured after they became stuck in a juicing machine in Portarlington.

Ambulance Victoria said paramedics took the girl to hospital in a stable condition “with her hand still in the machine” last Friday.

New academic chief A Melbourne academic will begin running Barwon Health later this month.

Monash University Professor Ruth Salom (pictured) would bring “vast depth of experience working with all levels of government”, Barwon Health said.

Health survey City Hall is phone-surveying 1500 residents about “key health indicators” such as smoking and physical activity levels.

Staff would use the results of the “firstever” survey to determine local priorities and measure trends in community health, the City said.

Shuttle replaced

Public gets the cameras rolling for creative hubcaps Filming began on Geelong-based documentary Hubcaps to Creative Hubs on Wednesday following local crowd-funding efforts.

Film group Creative Geelong collaborated with the University of Melbourne and Deakin University to create the three-part series.

“We were aiming for $15,000 to be raised to make these three short films but ended up with $20,000,” said Creative Geelong president Jennifer Cromarty.

“The Geelong community was incredibly enthusiastic and supportive of the project.”

Television producer Nick Searle volunteered to create the series which tells the story of “creative transformations” at Geelong’s former industrial sites.

Mr Searle, who has worked on Grand Designs

Australia, The Recruit and Master Chef, began filming interviews at Federal Woollen Mills in North Geelong on Wednesday.

The series will also visit the former paper mills in Fyansford and the former woollen and worsted mills in Newtown.

Ms Cromarty said the films would encourage further investment in the local economy and provide broadcast-quality marketing material.

“Creative industries across the G21 region account for 8 per cent of all employment with over 7800 jobs,” Ms Cromarty said.

“The role of creative industries in our region is helping shape our clever and creative future.”

Greater Geelong and a number of local businesses and groups contributed to the $20,000 total.

Melbourne’s SkyBus has taken over Avalon Airport’s shuttle service after the airport declined to extend its contract with Geelong’s Murrell Group.

SkyBus said it would operate the Avalon service initially for six months as permanent arrangements were finalised to replace the “sudden cancellation” of the Murrell shuttle last week.

Average household water bills will rise at rates little more than inflation over the next five years under a proposed new pricing system.

Barwon Water sought feedback on the plan this week while officially opening its $32 million headquarters redevelopment in central Geelong.

The pricing plan would progressively widen the difference between fixed service and volumeusage charges, with the latter increasing as a portion of bills.

The split would lift the volume share from 68 to 74 per cent by 2023, giving consumers “more control over their bills,” Barwon Water managing director Tracey Slatter said.

“The proposed change means that even more than ever by using less water the average household can influence their total water bill.”

Prices would increase only by inflation over the next two financial years before additional 0.9

per cent rises annually until 2023, Ms Slatter said.

The proposed billing system’s incentive for saving water would reduce Barwon Water’s need for additional revenue from customers, she said. “(It) places less demand on our water resources and allows Barwon Water to delay major expenditure on new water sources, thereby keeping costs down over the longer term and reducing the total revenue needed to provide a secure water supply into the future.”

Barwon Water is seeking feedback online before submitting the pricing proposal to the Essential Services Commission for approval.

Water Minister and Bellarine MP Lisa Neville officiated at the headquarters opening on Wednesday.

The building’s “five green star rating” made it “one of Geelong’s greenest businesses,” she said.

Also making an impact on local social media this week was Geelong’s Andrew Brittain (pictured) with his Policeman of the Year award.

Words of congratulations flowed thick and fast on the local constabulary’s Facebook page when it announced the Leading Senior Constable’s win for his work on a Kokoda youth program.

“Good work”, “top job”, “well deserved” and many other such sentiments were posted by well-wishers below Andrew’s story.

But among the generous words was a cheekily back-handed compliment.

“I worked with Andrew in the ’80s at Rays Disposals,” posted Steve A Corbett, “he’s a better cop than a retail assistant! Lol. Congratulations”.

Sounds like Andrew made the right career change.

Sledgehammer bravery

By Luke Voogt Jamie Rumoz never felt he “was in danger” when a raving jobseeker sledgehammered through the front security door of his workplace earlier this year.

Mr Rumoz won a police commendation on Wednesday for calming the man as his colleagues fled to safety on 9 February.

“I really didn’t have much time to think about it,” he said.

“I just tried to keep him in the room long enough so he wouldn’t go anywhere else and, hopefully, the police would come and apprehend him.”

Mr Rumoz was working in the front office of a central Geelong job agency when a sledgehammer-wielding man burst through the front security door.

“Once he hit the door the first time everybody started running out,” he said. “(With) The second hit the door flung open and I was standing right in front of him.”

Mr Rumoz remained in the office to delay the man until police arrived.

“Because my desk was closest to the door I spoke to him,” he said.

“He just said he wanted an effing job - he really wasn’t making too much sense.”

Mr Rumoz edged toward the exit in case the man decided to turn on him.

“I asked him to sit down and stay with me...

I wasn’t sure who was next door or who was upstairs,” he said.

The man declined a seat, instead smashing a desk with the sledgehammer, Mr Rumoz said.

“I just said to him not to do that because they were going to replace it.”

Finally, the man left the office and police apprehended him outside.

“To me it seemed like an hour but it was only five minutes,” he said.

Teleta Nominees director Ryan McGarigle said residents’ “harassment” continuously delayed the clean-up.

Workers wore appropriate protective gear at the site, Mr McGarigle said.

“But they tend to take it off when they get outside.”

Residents said the factory’s former tenants had made an effort to clean any instances of carbon fallout.

A WorkSafe spokesperson confirmed the authority had attended the site following complaints about demolition work carried out appropriately.

Environmental Protection Authority investigations indicated that dust from the factory contained “carbon black”.

“Carbon black can have health impacts, but from long-term exposure,” an EPA spokespersons said.

A teenager’s disappearance at Torquay has prompted police to appeal for help to find him.

Public Transport Users Association Geelong convenor Paul Westcott welcomed V/Line introducing 74 services on the line in seven weeks.

“That will take some pressure off Geelong trains,” he said.

V/Line this week announced the busiest 12 months on record on the Geelong line with than 7.7 million passengers during 2016/’17.

Meanwhile, disgruntled peak-hour train users posted complaints and photos of passengers crowding carriage corridors almost weekly during the 12-month period.

Often peak-hour trains were “over 100 per cent full”, Mr Westcott said.

“It’s not much consolation for people who are standing but it’s better for a service to be well patronised than poorly patronised.”

Mr Westcott said Tarneit Station was the biggest contributor to passenger increases on the Geelong line, along with population growth and increases in service frequency.

The State Government opened the station in June 2015, as part of the Regional Rail Link, and it quickly became the second busiest in Victoria.

Trains services solely to Tarneit and Wyndham Vale under the new timetable would help congestion on the line, he said.

“But if patronage keeps increasing it may be like a dog chasing its tail.”

Mr Westcott said State and Federal governments needed to speed up the duplication of the line from Waurn Ponds to South Geelong.

Public Transport Victoria planners showed him blueprint to duplicate the line in sections two years ago, he said.

“There’s no reason why you couldn’t build the line in sections. That would be better than doing nothing.”

The duplication would greatly increase the frequency of services, Mr Westcott said, despite the line still narrowing to a single track at the tunnel to Geelong Station.

“It would remain a choke point but it only takes trains three minutes to get through the tunnel.”

V/Line chief executive officer James Pinder said the 74 extra services would cater to the extra people using trains to get to work, study, appointments and recreation.

Both State and Federal governments budgeted to duplicate the line from Wuarn Ponds to South Geelong this year.

V/Line delivered 89.6 per cent of Geelong trains on time last month, the best monthly result since October 2016.

Walkers to rally for Riney in epic bowel cancer trek

By Luke Voogt A determined group of Geelong walkers will trek 75km for bowel cancer awareness on behalf of Barwon Downs teacher Catherine Ross.

Catherine’s sister-in-law, Belmont midwife Rosie Fitzclarence, said the walk was a show of support for a beloved friend and family member.

“We really want to rally around ‘Riney’,” the 35-year-old mother-of-two said.

“She’s thoughtful, caring (and) a beautiful (person) to be around.”

Catherine was just 28 when doctors diagnosed her with Stage III bowel cancer in 2014.

“To find out how it could affect someone so young, just blew me away," Rosie said.

Since then Catherine endured two large operations, each time followed by six months of chemotherapy.

Her cancer spread to her other organs and she was now receiving chemotherapy for a third time.

Rosie and brother, Jamie Bell - Catherine’s husband - grew up in Wallington.

“They’re the strongest couple I know,” Rosie said. “They’ve had a lot of hard times, but their positivity and determination is incredible.“ Jamie and Rosie joined 11 walkers, most from Geelong, in team Research4Riney raising money for the Jodie Lee Foundation.

Rosie hoped they could double their number for the tough but beautiful two-day trek in Castlemaine, which begins on 8 September.

“I can’t wait,” she said. “I plan to get out and do some more hill work to prepare.”

Flu spike warning A 70 per cent increase in local flu cases this winter has prompted an appeal for sufferers to stay away from the ill and elderly.

The spike in flu patients at Geelong’s public hospital compared to this time last year indicated a “bigger than average season for flu and respiratory viruses” ahead, Barwon Health warned.

The peak of the season was likely to arrive in the next four weeks, said Barwon Health’s infection prevention service manager, Paul Simpson.

He urged flu victims to observe “basic methods of reducing the spread of viruses”, particularly to people whose health was already fragile.

“If you have the flu or gastro-like symptoms, it would be sensible to avoid visiting the hospital or elderly people,” Mr Simpson said.

“We’ve definitely seen an increase in respiratory illnesses in general. There are early signs of a larger than normal flu season but there is still time for the vaccination and we encourage people to see their GP about protecting themselves against influenza.”

The flu vaccine’s short-lived immune response of six to 12 months meant annual vaccinations were necessary, Mr Simpson said.

He urged anyone with flu-like symptoms to consult their GP and attend hospital only in an emergency.

An unknown driver has led police on a chase from Belmont to Torquay and back into central Geelong.

A police helicopter first spotted the burgundy sedan travelling fast on Torquay Road, Belmont, about 9.30am last Friday.

Highway Patrol units unsuccessfully attempted to intercept the sedan as it sped toward Torquay, police said.

The car U-turned at Beach Road, Torquay, before driving to central Geelong where it was eventually found abandoned in a shopping centre underground car park.

Lyons, MPs at lobby odds

A sceptical Geelong lotto-winner couldn’t believe her luck when an official phoned her to say she had won $549,920 on Monday morning.

The woman suspected an ulterior motive during the call and only after checking her ticket did she accept the life-changing news from the official.

The disbelieving winner won a division one prize of $496,656 as well as addition divisional prizes totalling, $549,920.

Tattslotto spokesperson Bronnie Spencer said some winners had a hard time accepting they have won the jackpot.“Most of the time there’s a bit of disbelief. People can’t believe it’s happened to them and they are trying to process it.

“We often reassure these winners that the ticket they are holding is the winning ticket and their dream has come true.”

The woman declined to say how she would spend the windfall and chose to celebrate privately.

“Lots of agencies get State Government grants for various things, so as long as whoever gets the State Government grant is doing the right thing, why shouldn’t they get it?”

Member for Western Victoria Simon Ramsay was “loath” to criticise public funding of the committee or G21, saying both did a “reasonable job” representing members.

Mr Ramsay described the committee as “apolitical in their dealings with the government of the day”.

Police charged a 23-year-old man following an alleged robbery at a Corio service station on Monday morning.

The Corio man reportedly handed himself in at Geelong Police Station around 11am Tuesday, after detectives released images from the incident.

On Monday a man entered a United service station and demanded money, about 4.30am, police alleged.

He claimed to have a gun but did not draw a weapon, they said.

The attendant handed over an amount of cash before the alleged offender fled the service station.

Detectives interviewed the man and charged him with robbery.

He was bailed, to face the Geelong Magistrates’ Court on 7 September.

Former mayor Darren Lyons has welcomed calls for state authorities to cut their funding to the Committee for Geelong.

“I think the lobbying sector in Geelong is out of control,” Mr Lyons said.

“We’ve become the city for committees.

“They’re unelected people in the big end of town and they don’t represent the views of the ratepayer.”

Last week council hopeful Michael King called for local, federal and state authorities to cut their $25,000 corporate memberships of the committee.

Public funding of private groups meant to lobby governments failed the “pub test”, he said.

Mr Lyons also backed Mr King’s call for the next Geelong council to reduce its contribution to municipal alliance body G21 and to take charge of its own lobbying.

“It’s becoming way too costly for City of Greater Geelong,” Mr Lyons said.

“What we need to do is pool that money into a (council) lobby group for the city and its ratepayers.”

He cited Deakin University lobbying Federal Government as an example of effective “internal” lobbying.

The “power struggle” between Geelong’s various lobby groups was “embarrassing” and “hurting“ the city, Mr Lyons said.

The chief executive officers of the committee and G21, Rebecca Cason and Elaine Carbines, seemed “at each other’s throats,” he said.

But Mr Lyons credited Ms Carbines with running G21 “efficiently”.

Committee for Geelong’s various overseas trips had failed to bring “a single dollar into Geelong”, he said.

The committee could spend private members’ “money however it wished” but government funding created conflicts of interest, Mr Lyons said.

Peter Valentine protests just a little too much (Indy, 7 July).

I remember the good old days when we had competition in taxis around Geelong.

When radio cabs could not beat the competition it bought Bay City Cabs and closed it down.

The drivers had nowhere else to go and the passengers were the losers.

If you can’t get with the times you need to get out of the way whether you’re a driver, a lessee or a taxi investor.

Cheaper credit card facilities in cabs would be a good start.

Bully for councillors standing again It was great idea to see that ousted former councillors have the integrity to stand up and be counted once again at City of Greater Geelong council elections (Indy, 7 July).

I didn’t vote for Daniel Andrews’ favoured administrators. I and others voted for the councillors who opted to do the best by their communities.

Darryn Lyons was similarly voted in as mayor.

Where does a Labor State Government get the idea it can bully our people by choosing its own stand-ins to make decisions for us?

Will any of the former Labor councillors stand, or would that be rocking the State Government boat?

Hey presto, unqualified criticism I was astonished at the ability of B. Stone (30 June) to argue a scientific case related to the evolution of migratory birds.

Such language in regard to the scientific method: “abracadabra, alakazam ... hey presto", with some sneering thrown in.

Further, he hid his scientific credentials under a very large bushel, as I could not find any mention of him or his qualifications in a Google search, unlike, of course, Meijuan Zhao, whose name, scientific qualifications and affiliation with the Centre

While former mayor Darryn Lyons in the same edition of the Indy lamented having to lead a local Hillbilly lobbyist trio entourage to Canberra, so far as keeping Avalon Airport in the game, it would be foolish to seek to weaken G21’s regional advocacy or, alternatively as Mr Lyons recommended, that the region would be more effectively represented by having a permanently resident Canberra lobby.

Getting Avalon Airport over the line would see open-ended inbound tourism and fresh-foodexport-hub benefits. Avalon could be the biggest game in town and more so as a regional entity.

Without the support from a professional lobby in concert with airport operator Linfox, Avalon will continue to be overlooked in a crowded, citycentric aviation space.

Focus lobbies on Avalon potential Given the massive Turnbull government investment in Sydney’s Badgery Creek, Melbourne Airport Corporation’s push for a third runway and related terminal additions, and the likelihood of an airport south-east of central Melbourne (Indy, 7 July), where, despite Lara MP John Eren’s assurance of continued Andrews government support, does Avalon Airport realistically stand without major federal funding?

Without, for starters, a lack of effective advocacy isn’t it more likely Avalon will be overlooked and painted into a corner?

I was recently dismayed to find in my letterbox a pamphlet from my federal member, Sarah Henderson, about fire services reform.

It could only be described as political propaganda.

It contained numerous factual errors. In fact, it would appear Ms Henderson has little understanding of the subject, has not read the proposed legislation, and is not familiar with the CFA’s Fire Services Statement, which outlines the policy direction.

Phrases such as “Labor’s hostile takeover of the Country Fire Authority” suggest she is uninformed of the relationship of a statutory authority to State Government or the CFA’s management structure.

I find it curious, to say the least, that a federal parliamentarian would raise a state issue without first learning the facts. Perhaps Ms Henderson should stick to her day job and concentrate on helping run the country.

I wouldn’t have thought a member of the Turnbull government could afford to take their eye off the ball with their current troubles.

Busking a move for mental health

By Luke Voogt ‘Geelong’s Best Busker’ Josh Dance will join a line-up of local talent raising money for mental health in Portarlington next weekend.

The cause is close to Josh’s heart - he battled through depression and addiction himself.

“It’s great that the whole mental health situation is a lot more out there today,” the 47-year-old said.

“It’s as important as physical health - the two go hand in hand.”

Josh moved “down the highway” from Collingwood to Belmont 12 years ago for a “sea change”.

He had struggled with drinking since he was a teenager.

“One morning I woke up in a park hung over with a dozen cans around me, and that was the last time I drank.”

Josh said busking and writing music since had helped him “in a big way”.

“Putting that emotion and energy into a song has always been a good therapy.”

The Corio local has been flat out performing since winning Geelong’s Best Busker this year.

He loved being able to “pay for the groceries” through live gigs and busking - including a couple of street gigs for Geelong council.

“I’m feeling really good about the music at the moment. I’m making money doing what I love."

He was thrilled to again join “secret weapon” and drummer Nat De-Palma, 59, at Saints and Sailors in Portarlington on 22 July.

“He could be 20 - he’s got the energy and positivity of a very youthful man,” he said.

“I’ve played at Saints and Sailors a few times.

It’s a beautiful venue and looks right onto the ocean."

The Josh Dance duo will play alongside Possum On The Porch and Jayne Maya to raise money for mental health charity Headspace.

The Portarlington concert is the brainchild of local musician Kyle Taylor and a precursor to Geelong’s Mane Event Music Festival, which also

“I’ve played with Kyle before,” Josh said. “He’s a great musician. We actually co-wrote a song Drifter and it was the first (song I’d ever co-written).”

Kyle, a gay marriage and cannabis legalization campaigner, will also perform at the concert.

“I’m very excited to be part of this cause to raise much-needed funds for Headspace,” he told the Indy.

It’s time to rock around the world

By Luke Voogt Two-man tribute act Dave Allen and Ronnie Soul morph into dozens of characters in their journey through rock and roll history.

The duo pays tribute to Ringo Star, Status Quo, Tom Jones, Elvis, Johnny O’Keefe, the Beach Boys and even Tina Turner.

“I do that one,” Allen said “You’ve never seen anything like it!”

The pair time-travel from the ’50s to the ’70s in Rock around the World, which comes to Gee-

long RSL on Saturday.

The versatile performers don dresses, heels and Hawaiian skirts in their comic tributes to Yoko Ono and John Lennon, or Elvis’ Rock A Hula Baby.

“It’s very funny, everyone has a good laugh,” Allen said.

The duo has performed at casinos and RSLs across the country.

With scores of different rock legends up their sleeve and a portable wardrobe, they keep crowds guessing each night, Allen said.

“It’s pretty full-on. We’re running in and out of the wardrobe all the time on stage.”

Their promotional video even includes Allen’s tribute to Collingwood super fan Joffa, where he sings: “I got myself a girlfriend from Collingwood called Ruth. But I wish that she’d stop smiling, she’s only got one tooth.”

The costumed chameleon is also versatile on the instruments, playing drums, blues harp and guitar. He met fellow guitarist Ronnie Soul more than 40 years ago.

“In the mid-70s we used to be in an Eagles-type band,” he said. “We did all the songs of the era.”

After a long hiatus from cover rock, Allen again joined forces with Soul for Rock around the World.

He looked forward to returning to Geelong RSL. “We always get a good crowd there,” he said.

Rock around the World features a 90-minute show including their various skits and a 75-minute rock and roll dance segment.

“They can all jump up and have a dance whatever takes their fancy,” Allen said.

After 22 years working with wood ovens, Cafizza’s Yalcin Aydin is a pizza perfectionist.

He and wife Kezi opened the pizza store and cafe 18 months ago.

“He loves it,” Kezi says. “He’s very, very specific with his pizzas.”

The Turkish expat takes his job so seriously he won’t let anyone else touch the oven, jokes Kezi.

“He has to have it his way to the point where he drives us insane.”

But customers appreciate his attention to detail.

“He’s been serving some of the same customers for decades,” Kezi says.

Yalcin offers a wide range of pizzas including gluten-free and vegetarian options - as well the crowd favourite Pumpkin Delight.

A Captain’s call

By Luke Voogt Cover trio the Captain Spalding Band will rock the Sphinx in a one-off show on Saturday.

The band’s lead singer Tom Spalding grew up in a Glasgow housing estate, which its residents ironically nicknamed ‘Chateau de Lait’.

“I picked the guitar up when I was about 17 and 18,” he said.

He shared a love of The Beatles with his next door neighbour, who encouraged him to play in the Glasgow pub scene.

Spalding cut his teeth playing at The Admiral, which was featuring performers like comedian Billy Connolly at the time.

He travelled to Spain in 1974 to join his friends in a band, until in 1977 when he got a call other British expats who owned a soccer club in Australia.

“I brought my football boots and my guitar...

and I’m still here,” he said.

Spalding found work on cruise ships, and in 1981 formed a cover band, which has been going ever since.

The Captain Spalding Band’s latest line-up includes the skills of Dave Campbell and Ken Murdoch.

The band has played across Australia, New Zealand and Asia, and performed at corporate gigs for Mercedes, NAB, Hawthorn Football Club and more.

The band plays a mixture of sing-along cover classics Khe Sahn and Eagle Rock, along with newer hits like Viva la Viva, Sex on Fire and Wake Me Up (both Avicii and Wham versions).

“We try to get a really good mix of some old standards and some new stuff,” Spalding said. “It’s not really rocket science.”

The band will return to the Sphinx for first time the band had been to Geelong in “four or five years”, Spalding said.

Often however, this is not the case. Remaining active as one enters their golden years is critical and provides many health benefits and increases the quality of one’s life.

Cycling is one of the many activities that older adults can continue, or even start, with - and Cycling Victoria has a program that is aimed at adults 55 and over.

Life Cycle 55+ Explore rides are a great way to have some fun, remain active and make new friends

while riding a bike. The program was developed

by Cycling Victoria, VicHealth and the Council for Older Adults and aims to get older adults back on the bike and enjoying cycling.

Cycling Victoria’s Mark Drehlich said: “We hear people so often talk about when they were young and how they loved to ride their bikes. How they would love to ride again, but they are too old. We want people to know that you are never too old. You can cycle at any age and Life Cycle 55+ encourages people to get out on their bikes and join others in a fun and social environment.”

Cycling is a fantastic way to stay active through

low-impact exercise that provides many health benefits.

These include: increased cardiovascular fitness, increased muscle strength and flexibility, improved joint mobility, decreased stress levels, improved posture and co-ordination, strengthened bones, decreased body fat levels, prevention or management of disease, and reduced anxiety and depression.

The Cats will have to fight hard to overcome the Hawks despite thrashing them by 86 points earlier in the season, according to Chris Scott.

The Cats coach remained wary of the Hawks based on their past six week’s form.

“Geelong Footy Club will never loose respect for Hawthorn and never disregard the challenge that they can pose, even when they’re not in their best form.”

Scott said the Cats still had room for improvement despite his team’s 85-point drubbing of Brisbane last Saturday night.

“We thought that some our skill execution was a little off.”

Geelong kicked 11 goals to two in the final quarter of its last game against Hawthorn, in what was the Cats’ biggest win over the Hawks since 1949.

After a form slump earlier in the year Hawthorn were fighting for finals contention following a draw against ladder leaders GWS. The Cats drew against GWS the week before.

“Seems to be a season where it’s not really who you play it’s when you play them,” Scott said.

“Some of better players that probably weren’t in career-best form earlier in the year are starting to play really well.”

Useful forward Paul Puopolo could return from a groin injury after a two-week absence.

Luke Hodge’s 300th game will provide some extra motivation for the Hawks, after the Hawthorn star announced Monday he would retire at season’s end.

With Hawthorn’s disposal efficiency at an impressive 75.6 per cent, winning the ball would be a key, Scott said.

“If they control the ball they’re well and truly in the game.”

The Barwon River estuary produced respectable mixed bags over the past weeks.

The deeper sections just up from the Barwon Heads Bridge fished well for King George whiting and small Australian salmon. The bank along Sheepwash Road provided much the same action along with the odd bream.

Surf anglers again enjoyed sensational fishing, with Jan Juc giving up plenty of salmon to a thumping 2kg on bait and lure. Bancoora produced similar results, although I only found a few smaller fish while spinning the beach on Sunday morning.

Corio Bay was again a safe bet for flathead and pinkie snapper around structure, while garfish kept land-based anglers busy during the less-windy days.

Portarlington’s new harbour was a new hot spot for land-based anglers seeking pinkie snapper, whiting, squid and salmon.

Casting three-inch minnow-style plastics around the inside of the harbour caught salmon to 35cm, while pilchards cast outside accounted for larger specimens along with pinkies.

Squid were relatively easy to catch between Clifton Spring and St Leonards.

Drifting in 4m to 5m around reef and weed patches worked well.

The area’s whiting were sometimes eluding anglers but fishing though sunset generally produced a few catches.

Freshwater fishing continued firing up, with Lake Bullen Merri giving up Chinook salmon to almost 2kg on lightly weighted pilchard fillets deep.

Lake Bolac fished well for rainbow trout.

Trolling Rapala F-5 and F-7s or fishing with Powerbait from the bank help land remarkably conditioned trout reaching 2kg.

Wurdee Boluc Reservoir lived up to its reputation as The Lake of 1000 Casts, proving hits and misses on redfin to just over 40cm.

St Augustine’s Water Hole, at Highton, was a great place for the kids using Powerbait and small hard-body lures to catch recently stocked rainbow trout.

The Barwon River between Breakwater and Queen’s Park held plenty of carp, with fish to 8kg grassed.

Next week should provide opportunities to fish land-based for squid at St Leonards at for a mixed bag at Portarlington’s new harbour. Freshwater fishos should keep casting away at Wurdee Boluc for a big brown trout.

Scott Selwood, Daniel Menzel and George Horlin-Smith could be fit to play Saturday, causing a few selection dilemmas for the Cats coach.

More of the world’s best women riders are set to pedal their way to Victoria for the 2018 Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race.

Major Events Minister John Eren joined Aussie Tour de France hero Cadel Evans Wednesday to announce an increased ranking for next year’s Deakin University Elite Women’s Race.

“This is another big win for women’s cycling in Australia, and we’re proud to be bringing more

of the world’s best female teams and riders to the sporting capital,” he said.

“Events like these fill hotel rooms, create jobs, and attract visitors from around the world who splash their valuable tourism dollars.”

The new ranking meant the top 10 women’s teams in the world could now compete in Geelong.

The Towards Zero Race Melbourne will also

return in 2018, featuring two fast races for elite men and women.

More than 3000 budding cyclists will likely ride with Cadel Evans in the People’s Ride with entries to open in August.

Deakin University vice-chancellor Professor Jane den Hollander also announced that Deakin University would extend its partnership with the Elite Women’s Race until 2019.
