Throughout history children have been exploited, traded, enslaved and stolen for various reasons and this week Noosa Today heard the tale about the deception occurring at orphanages for tourism.

A group of well meaning Australians, many from the Sunshine Coast, embarked on a mission to help a group of young girls in Nepal they believed to be orphaned.

It all went horribly wrong.

To their credit they went to great lengths to right the situation.

How many other people in our community have been duped?

I’ve heard many stories over many years from individuals, school groups, church groups and charities raising money for orphanages in developing countries.

Forget Me Not CEO Andrea Nave says more than 70 per cent of children in orphanages are not orphans.

They are just “commodities” in a money making scheme that leaves them unprepared for life outside the walls of their childhood prisons.

Sunshine Coast Councillor Jason O’Pray said the ongoing commitment

by Air New Zealand and trans-Tasman partner Virgin Australia had helped build the Sunshine Coast as a favourite destination for New Zealanders.

Figures show 66,000 New Zealanders visited the Sunshine Coast in the year ending March 2017, a 5.5 per cent increase on the previous year.

Last winter more than 13,500 passengers took advantage of the winter services, a 12 per cent increase on 2015.

Sunshine Coast Airport general manager Peter Pallot said the Air New Zealand flights broadened travel horizons for New Zealand residents and Sunshine Coast locals alike.

“The flights provide easy access for our New Zealand passengers, allowing them to begin their Sunshine Coast escape the moment they step off the plane,” he said.

“The services also provide hasslefree international travel for our residents, giving them the opportunity to explore all that New Zealand has to offer, or to take advantage of easy connections to a range of Air New Zealand international destinations including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Vancouver and beyond.”

Visit Sunshine Coast CEO Simon Latchford said the regional tourism organisation’s Sunshine by Lunchtime campaign with Air New Zealand and Tourism Events Queensland was timed specifically to be in market in the chilly month of May and increase sales in the lead up to the flight services commencing today.

The airlines operate flights Fridays and Sundays throughout the year. ●

400,000 VIEWS FOR PORTRAIT ENTRY Pomona artist Jandamarra Cadd gave social media followers a peak at his 2017 Archibald Portrait Prize entry of actor Jack Charles entitled Cleverman and it received about 400,000 views in the first week.

Jandamarra was a finalist in the Archibald Prize in 2014, and last year won the People’s Choice Award at the Sunshine Coast Art Prize.

Jandamarra said his portrait subject was not only an uncle by relation, but was also someone he could relate to.

“It’s important for me to have elders and role models that I can relate to, and Uncle Jack represents the tenacity and resilience of a true survivor,” he said.

“Although he is of shorter stature than myself, his personality and vigour is larger than life, hence the choice to paint him this way” Jack Charles is an Indigenous elder, actor, musician and activist who is using his own experiences with substance abuse to help others find a way out of addiction.

An unstoppable force, Uncle Jack is currently preparing for a show at the Sydney Opera House in September on his 74th birthday.

Archibald finalists will be announced on 20 July and the winner on 28 July. ●

COUNCIL BACKS GAY MARRIAGE

Noosa Council will join other councils around Australia to formally support gay marriage at the next ordinary meeting on 20 July.

In doing so, council agrees with the motion, originally adopted by the Australian Local Government Association to call on “the Federal Government and the Federal Parliament to treat with dignity and respect all members of the community regardless of gender or sexuality by supporting changes to the Marriage Act to achieve marriage equality for same sex couples.”

Councillor Ingrid Jackson said she was delighted that Noosa Council was joining the nationwide call for the federal parliament to legislate marriage equality for same sex couples.

“I support inclusiveness and equal treatment for all Australians, and I support marriage equality as a major principle of a fair and non-discriminatory society,” she said.

“This is a fundamental freedom that must apply equally to all Australians.

“Noosa Council is in a position to reinforce community sentiment on this issue.

“Australians have expressed through multiple opinion polls that a significant majority of around 70 per cent of people agree that marriage equality must be achieved immediately.” ● 201721004-LB21-17

chance meeting between two couples forged a relationship which helped turn a floundering festival into a flourishing success.

Johanne and Ian Wright met playwright David Williamson and his actor wife Kristin when they happened to book on the same tour in Myanmar in 2013, and came back convinced they should volunteer for the Noosa Long Weekend Festival.

Johanne was winding up a boutique management and strategy consultancy after having worked in 21 countries across the Asia Pacific region with organisations including the Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs Department and its aid program AusAID. Ian was a veterinarian with the CSIRO and “heavily involved in project management”.

It was a small tour group of about a dozen people, and Johanne mentioned to David and Kristin how she was looking forward to the upcoming festival.

“We didn’t know them before,” Johanne said.

But after a few more discussions and few red wines David wanted both Johanne and Ian to join the festival committee.

Ian declined but was talked into taking charge of coordinating the volunteers.

“A LOT OF ARTISTS ARE FALLING OVER EACH OTHER TO COME … THEY GET A BEACHFRONT APARTMENT AND THEY LOVE COMING TO NOOSA.” On their return to Noosa, David invited Johanne to a committee meeting in late 2013.

The festival, now called Noosa Alive and of which David is patron, was struggling to survive. They’d just lost a major sponsor, missed out on a government grant and were carrying a debt.

“I said ‘you can’t not have that festival - it’s so important to Noosa,’ and that’s how I got elected president,” she said.

“We all worked really hard to get local businesses and groups involved. The show went on and every year on, we have made a small surplus that we ploughed into gearing it up.

“Last year, we brought in a 26 per cent increase in interstate visitors to the festival.

“This year we made a commitment to increase the number of activities on offer.

“We have about 130 separate events and 250 artists from Australia and one from New Zealand.”

Johanne said each year the acts and events are chosen in two separate ways.

“People come to us. They may be a touring company like Opera Australia that is touring Marriage of Figaro,” she said.

“A lot of artists are falling over each other to come. They get a beachfront apartment and they love coming to Noosa.

“Lior told us the other day it was six degrees in Melbourne and he can’t wait to come swimming in Noosa.

“And we have all these partnerships with local arts groups - Noosa Arts Theatre, Noosa Chorale, Noosa Film Society, Slow Food Noosa and they are as much a part of the festival.”

While the artists are keen to spend some part of winter in Noosa, it is the attraction of patron David Williamson with his wide-reaching connections and the friendly reputation of the festival that draws artists.

“Everyone coming here feels welcome,” Johanne said.

“The artists are well looked after.”

The other way artists end up at the festival is through careful selection, making sure it is a fresh and ever changing program for guests.

“We have a programming committee with experts in different genres,” Johanne said.

“The artistic director (Ian Mackellar) uses them as an advisory committee to source great performers and acts.

They do all the research.”

This year for the first time the festival has moved into the digital age with events to be posted on You Tube.

In addition one event will be streamed live on the internet.

“This will give us a far greater audience than we could ever have with people coming to visit and for commercial partners it provides them with a product streamed to a live audience,” she said.

The festival is dependent on sponsors, philanthropic donations and volunteers to stay alive, and this year obtained a government grant.

“Our box office never brings in more than 50 per cent of the money you need to spend,” she said.

“The lovely thing this year we’ve had people coming to us wanting to be sponsors.”

The festival is a registered charity. Almost all staff including Johanne and Ian, the committee, grant application writers, program distributors and event staff including ticket takers, ushers and survey takers are volunteers.

Being in charge of a laboratory at CSIRO, Ian had plenty of scheduling experience setting timelines for research projects which he adapted to organise volunteers for events at different times.

“The volunteers are very important. They’re the backbone of the festival,” he said.

“We have lots of long term loyal volunteers. Some of them have been there for 10 years.

“People volunteer because they have a passion for some aspect of the festival or they believe in supporting the arts.

“They would see shows they would not otherwise see

and it’s the camaraderie they enjoy.

“We always say to have a fun time and they generally do.”

Ian said the volunteer model used was unique to the festival. Unlike events where paid staff instruct volunteers, at Noosa Alive both team leaders and volunteers are volunteers so everyone is on an equal footing.

While the festival brings economic benefits of about $2.9million to the local community, it is as much as part of the community as a tourist potential.

To meet community appeal there is a wide range of events organised at multiple venues across the region, and tickets priced to be accessible to all.

Tickets for the opera for instance range from $15 to $189.

The festival will this year kick off on Friday 21 July, with events from Cooroy to Noosa Heads.

On Saturday 22 July, there will be a free event from 3pm at Noosa Lions Park beside the Noosa River as Noosa truly comes alive when Radio Hot 91.1 presents Fire in the Sky. The festival will wrap up with a closing event on Noosa Main Beach on Sunday 30 July with song, dance and food at the Rococo Beach Club Marquee.

NEWS CHURCH’S DECADE St Andrews Tewantin-Noosa Presbyterian Church has celebrated 10 years in its spiritual home at Tewantin.

The anniversary service on 23 June was attended by more than 80 people and was led by the church’s Minister The Reverend Keith Mayers.

Rev Mayers said for 10 years the church had met and helped many people in the community and shared happy and sad times together.

He said it was a time to take stock and count the many blessings bestowed upon the congregation. Luckily a head cold abated just in time for the Reverend to reinforce his message in song. ●

SEASONAL WORK TRIAL The Federal Government’s Seasonal Work Incentives trial from 1 July is targeted to assist 7600 unemployed people undertake seasonal horticultural work such as fruit picking to get work experience and build their skills.

The trial’s incentives are available to eligible Newstart and Youth Allowance (Other) recipients who have been receiving those payments continuously for at least three months and are participating in Jobactive, Transition to Work or Disability Employment Services.

Under the trial, participants can earn up to $5000 a year without it being assessed under the social security income test, travel allowance of up to $300 a year and employment service providers can receive payment of $100 a week for up to six weeks. IGA RENOVATES IGA Noosa Outlook is set to unveil a new store renovation at the end of the month.

DEPLETION OF OYSTERS: UNFOUNDED CLAIMS Noosa commercial fishers are fed up with being solely blamed for the reduced fish stocks in Noosa River and want Noosa Council to stop using ratepayers' money to fund organisations that discredit their family histories.

They say they are offended and insulted by unfounded claims made by Noosa Parks Association (NPA) president Dr Michael Gloster that commercial fishermen are responsible for the depletion of oysters in Noosa River.

In a letter to Noosa Today in June, Dr Gloster said: “Reversing the destruction by commercial fishermen of Noosa’s once prolific oyster reefs is the driving motivation for the Bring Back The Fish project partners.

“In the late 1800s and early 1900s commercial fishermen decimated the Noosa River’s and Weyba Creek’s oyster reefs.

The historical record shows that by the early 1900s about 1 million oysters a year were being commercially dredged and shipped

CHARITY TAKEN FOR ORPHAN RIDE

BY MARGARET MACCOLL When Mel and Craig Manly of Eumundi decided to help orphans in Nepal, they had no idea it would lead to a court case, a project to reunite children with their families and a submission to the inquiry into establishing a Modern Slavery Act in Australia.

In 2006, the couple became involved with Forget Me Not a not-for-profit organisation which established a children’s charity in conjunction with a Nepalese partnership which is a requirement for a foreign non-government organisation in the country.

Forget Me Not CEO Andrea Nave said the group ran an orphanage in Nepal for eight years under a board that included lawyers, and housed 20 girls whose documentation showed they were orphans.

After Forget Me Not appointed its own company director, the girls started telling them they weren’t orphans. “We had death certificates for the parents,� Mel said. “They were all fake. They were paper orphans.� “I couldn’t sleep at night,� Andrea said. “These children were being cared for by us. I had held these children’s hands.�

Forget Me Not acted immediately. They took their Nepalese partner to court and won, and over 18 months reunited every girl with their families. None of them were orphans.

Over the past three years, the organisation has reunited 88 children in similar situations in Nepal, India and Uganda with their families.

Andrea said voluntourism, where well-meaning tourists pay often large amounts of money to ‘give back’ to communities by visiting orphanages, was driving this separation of children from families.

demand, orphanage directors send scouts to poor villages to recruit children, telling parents that their children will have a better education and healthcare at the orphanage.

Parents often pay boarding fees or unwittingly sign over custody. “They treat children as a commodity,“ Andrea said. “The children grow up with a lack of bonding, and then can’t form lives outside the orphanage walls.�

Forget Me Not has united with 15 organisations including Griffith University, Save the Children Australia, Families Australia and tour companies Flight Centre and

Intrepid Group to make a submission to the Inquiry to ReThink orphanages.

They are recommending Australian governments, businesses, non-government organisations and individuals stop supporting residential care institutions in developing countries and current funding and volunteering be recognised to be encouraging child trafficking.

Forget Me Not members will appear on 3 August as expert witnesses before the Public Hearings of the Inquiry.

A report from the Inquiry is expected to be completed by the end of the year. â—?

BY MARGARET MACCOLL Olympic and Commonwealth Games medalist of the 1960s and 1970s Greg Rogers will begin swim coaching at Tewantin pool this week, after he and wife Margaret took over the lease for the pool.

The couple’s daughters, Dahlas, 22, and Lana, 21, who are both swimming champions will also coach at the pool when they are not competing.

Margaret Rogers said the family moved to the Sunshine Coast from Sydney a few years ago. They previously leased the pool at Maleny, and continue to hold the lease for Pomona pool but wanted to move to Tewantin to be closer to their daughters at Noosa.

Greg won silver and bronze medals in the 100m and 200m freestyle relays at the 1968 Mexico Olympics. At the 1970 Commonwealth Games in Scotland, Greg and his brother Neil won gold in the 100m and 200m freestyle relays. Greg won individual silver and bronze medals in the 100m and 200m freestyle events. At one point, Greg was regarded as “the fastest man in the world” for the 100m and 200m freestyle, Margaret said.

Dahlas is currently representing Queensland in the World Cup in Europe.

Lana last year gained the Summer of Surf Champion title, and is on track for the

World cup swimmer Dahlas Rogers.

Nutri-Grain Ironman series after injury caused her to pull out last year.

Margaret said both daughters were involved in surf lifesaving, and Lana continues to work patrols and compete while Dahlas prefers to compete against the clock in the pool.

Greg said the water at Tewantin pool was 28 degrees Celsius and everyone was welcome.

Last week the Sandman, as he is known, was using his trowel to create a magnificent dragon and mermaid at Noosa’s main beach which stopped people in their tracks as they marvelled at his

While most of his work is at the mercy of the elements, Dennis has carved out massive sculptures in the Luliang Unan province in China which are maintained permanently and visited by millions of people annually.

NEWS WELLINGTONS DO BATTLE The battle of the Wellingtons will be repeated at the 2017 Noosa Billy Cart Grand Prix on Sunday 16 July with MP Peter Wellington defending his title against Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington.

The inaugural race was a highlight last year of the event hosted by Noosa Christian College at Cooroy.

This year the billy cart races will begin in earnest at 9am with primary school teams competing. The main event, the Wellington vs Wellington celebrity race will be on at 10am followed by more racing high school and open teams.

A fun day of other activities will be on offer including carnival rides, camel rides, a mechanical bull and the chance to ‘dunk a teacher’.

There will be a food court, market stalls and a mega garage sale.

Fisheries Queensland will employ three more officers in the Brisbane - Sunshine Coast region Qld Boating and Fisheries Patrol to ensure compliance under the Sustainable Fisheries Strategy launched last month.

Fisheries Minister Bill Byrne said more than 330 people applied for 20 QBFP officer positions to operate from 19 bases across Queensland, including the Gladstone base which is being reopened.

He said the new QBFP officers would focus on fisheries compliance activities, gathering intelligence to support prosecutions and educating the community about responsible fishing.

KING OF THE MOUNTAIN CHALLENGE IS ON

BY JACKIE BAZZO Mount Cooroora in Pomona is the scene of one of the most gruelling and challenging athletic events Australia has to offer and continues to attract competitors from around the world.

As part of the King of the Mountain festival, Sunday 23 July marks the 39th anniversary of the notoriously steep 4.2 km Bendigo Bank King of the Mountain Challenge race.

Proving that age is no barrier if you are fit and healthy, this year’s race will see a record set for the oldest competitor in 77-year-old Frank Falappi from West Woombye, who continues to compete in athletic competitions and has won many endurance events.

A project of The Cooroy and Pomona Lion’s Club, the King of the Mountain Festival brings together a host of attractions and event experiences and

Police divers hunted below the surface of the Noosa River on Tuesday morning looking for sunken motors from several stolen boats. A group of teens who have allegedly been stealing small boats from Noosa jettys recently admitted to police that they had dumped the motors in the river and sunk the boats over the bar. Police were hoping to recover some of the sunken outboard motors as evidence to build their case against the thieves. ●

This is a dilemma for Noosa Council, which has been left “investigating options” for the bus chargers following cancellation of the electric bus trial about a month ago.

The two chargers cost the council $110,000, which is a tad more than the $18,000 council said it spent on the bus trial venture.

The ultracapacitor is advertised as a new way of storing electric energy that will eclipse chemical batteries in the near future. Instead of storing energy electrochemically, it stores it in an electric field.

The chargers have a 10-year lifespan and are resistant to changes in temperature, shock, overcharging, and discharging efficiency. They require less maintenance than conventional batteries and are light on the environment when disposed because

they lack toxic chemicals.

At the time of purchase, the council’s planning and infrastructure director Martin Drydale said had they been used in Noosa it would have been the first time in Australia an electric public bus was charged in that way.

Mr Drydale said the technology had been used with great success overseas since 2008.

Anyone needing an oversized charger for the next 10 years might contact the council for more information. ●

CREAM OF ART ON DISPLAY Winning artists across the region will showcase their works in an exhibition at The J Theatre throughout the Noosa Alive Festival.

During the exhibition on Sunday 23 July from 4-5.30pm, the artist from the Taste of Art Nexus Group will be celebrating the festival at a soiree and inviting guests in to view their artworks.

The talented group are the winners of this year’s Taste of Art exhibition which was held at the Noosa Regional Gallery in February, and each of them will be displaying a collection of their latest canvases and ceramics.

Sam Vatovey works are a visual response to destructive events; Domi Cohen will share a glimpse of more to come with her intriguing ceramic dwellings and there are contemplative portraits by Louise Gatliff.

BUDDING SINGERS MENTORED DREAM DANCE WITH IDOL

Jamison Kehl has spent the past six months as a member of Big Sky Girls, a mentoring program for young regional female singer/ songwriters.

She was one of 10 young female singer/songwriters to team up with established Queensland artists who assisted the aspirants to further their careers in the music industry.

The girls attended workshops with their mentors and had weekly video conferences where they wrote songs and music.

The program provided the girls with the opportunity to perform two of their original songs at the Brisbane Powerhouse during the school holidays.

The Noosa District State High Year 11 student made a professional recording of one of her songs, Limerence, and she will be releasing this as her debut single in coming weeks. ● noosatoday.com.au

Ballet dancer Scout Nicholas, 10, realised a dream to dance with one of his idols, Steven McRae, when he was cast in a performance with the Royal Ballet of London.

The Year 5 student at St Andrew’s College, Peregian Springs, was cast in the role of Mamillius, the young Prince of Sicily in The Winter’s Tale, performed at QPAC in Brisbane.

Scout has only been dancing for two years, but a friend suggested that he audition for the Royal Ballet which was touring Australia for the first time in 15 years.

“It was amazing, and I was ecstatic to be given the part,” he said.

“The best part was dancing with my idol and performing in front of a huge audience at QPAC. In the future, I hope to be a principal dancer in the Royal Ballet or any amazing company.”

St Andrew’s principal Chris Ivey said he was pleased the college had been able to support Scout with his passion.

“I look forward to seeing where this takes him in the future,” he said. ●

- Review your customer list at the beginning of the year and rank them based on who are great people and/or provide a good return (preferably both). If they are not one of those ... why are you working with them?

- Say to yourself very loudly “I will not apologise for collecting MY money.”

When your customers owe you money, it is normally because you have provided them with something and incurred all the relevant costs to do that. That was the arrangement, wasn’t it? Cash flow is the life blood of your business. Remember, you fulfilled your promise, time for the customer to fulfil theirs.

- Lastly, think positive. This will help you to see a hurdle as a minor setback, rather than overwhelming road block. There will always be changes and challenges in business. Convince yourself that there is an abundance of work and opportunities out there regardless of what happens - stay positive.

DON’T BE A DILL WITH DEDUCTIONS The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is warning taxpayers to avoid incorrect claims for work-related expenses at tax time this year.

Assistant Commissioner Kath Anderson said the ATO was using real-time data to compare taxpayers with others in similar occupations and income brackets, to identify higher-than-expected claims related to expenses including vehicle, travel, internet and mobile phone, and selfeducation.

“It is important to know what you’re eligible to claim before lodging your tax return and to make sure you don’t claim more than you’re entitled to,” Ms Anderson said.

“Many taxpayers don’t have a good understanding of what deductions they can claim, and believe they can claim for items which they in fact can’t. Some taxpayers even think that you can make a standard claim of $300 without having spent the money. You don’t need receipts for claims up to $300, but you must have actually spent the money, and be able to show us how you worked out your deduction if asked.”

Ms Anderson said that deductions for work uniforms are also a common trap for employees at tax time.

“It’s a myth that you can claim everyday clothes, for example, black pants and a plain white shirt, even if you only wear them to work, and your employer says you have to. To legitimately claim your uniform, it needs be unique and distinctive, such as a uniform with your employer’s logo, or be specific to your occupation and not for everyday use, like chef ’s pants or coloured safety vests.”

“It sounds like a small thing, but we aren’t talking about small sums of money here. There are 13 million taxpayers, so if everyone over claims even $100 that adds up to a lot.”

“One - you have to have spent the money yourself, and can’t have been reimbursed, two - the claim must be directly related to earning your income, and three - you need a record to prove it.”

deductions to your tax agent or upload them directly to myTax. This year myDeductions is available to sole traders as well as individuals.

The ATO also publishes a range of information on its website to help taxpayers figure out which of their expenses are deductible.

“If you are using an agent, you can also talk to them to make sure the work-related expenses that you claim are right,” Ms Anderson said.

WRONG TRACK In regard to Stuart Bradbury’s letter (Noosa Today, 6 July), I completely agree with Mr Bradbury on his opinion of the council. I voted for most of the councillors in office but I will not make the same mistake twice.

The removal of the seat and the reason given is ludicrous. If council is so concerned about a few oldies walking on the dunes to get to the seat and thereby destroying them they should come to Sunrise Beach during the school holidays and watch the kids running up and down the dunes and pulling on the grass-runners. I would think a few oldies would be more environmentally friendly than groups of energetic children. Council should stick to the important issues.

STREETS AHEAD The Hastings Street precinct maintenance levy, referred to in your 6 July article ‘Levy for Hastings Street’, is not a new levy, as may be inferred from your article, but a continuation of the same levy introduced four budgets ago in 2014/15.

The Hastings Street Association supported the levy’s introduction back in 2014 following de-amalgamation as a mechanism for Council to provide a requested higher level of service in the precinct than would normally be provided from general rates. It covers activities such as street sweeping, parks and street maintenance, pressure cleaning, asset replacement, etc.

The levy paid by Noosa Junction businesses to fund initiatives and projects specific to the Noosa Junction precinct is also a long-standing levy supported by the traders association. It will continue unchanged in the 2017/18 financial year.

ANGER UNCAPPED I have recently purchased a new car from a well-known garage in Noosa and have since been experiencing difficulty locking the fuel cap after refuelling.

After searching for information in my car owner handbook there is only instruction documented on unlocking the fuel cap.

I therefore decided to contact the garage and asked if I could bring the car in for someone to demonstrate the correct procedure for locking the cap. I was advised that no-one was available and I would need to book it in the following Monday - four days time.

When I arrived was told again no-one was available for an hour, so I went for a coffee.

I did express at the time that I thought it was unfair to charge me since I had no access to the information I needed from the owner handbook.

After returning home I phoned the garage to speak to the manager and was advised that he was in a meeting. I notified the person on the phone of my experience and she assured me she would email the service manager, who I have also emailed myself and as yet have heard nothing.

I can only assume they have received payment and are no longer interested in my opinion on the matter.

I am interested to see what your readers think. Needless to say I am not a happy customer.

no traffic lights and the fact that there are no nasty parking meters help make Noosa one of the most loved and liveable destinations in Australia. Ugly, unfriendly parking meters create an extremely negative undertone that goes against everything that Noosa stands for.

To date, the Noosa Council should be commended for not having gone down the weak parking meter route of so many other local governments who simply can’t balance their budgets. Any idea to install them would be a very uneducated mistake indeed. The intrinsic value to our hard-fought Noosa image of not having parking meters vastly exceeds any gains from their possible introduction. It’s not rocket science, parking meters are completely unnecessary. They don’t reduce traffic congestion and would do enormous damage to our unique, yet fragile Noosa image, not to mention cause great upset to a substantial number of local residents who choose to live here because of positives like these.

There has recently been some excitement regarding parking/traffic issues in Noosa, in particular the Hastings Street area. Let’s firstly understand that compared to the rest of the country, any complaints about traffic and parking in Noosa truly are a storm in a teacup affair. This can and will be achieved without any tax on carbon, which would satisfy his ill-named Galileo Movement’s raison d’etre. Solar and wind will prevail, in spite of Case’s squirming and whinging, but could be pushed ahead faster and more efficiently if the heavy subsidies to coal were lifted and the pricing structure that favours coal was changed to favour renewables. Case’s “fly in the ointment” behaviour is a mere stone in the road towards a clean energy future but nonetheless is putting Australia behind almost all other nations, especially India and China, in their ambition to stop burning fossil fuels.

It is baffling why a small, vocal segment of our society (mostly in Australia and the USA, interestingly) continues to resist what is obviously the best pathway to the future.

Renewables comes out on top when comparing employment, energy security, energy continuity, energy affordability and, of course, environmental health, by any measures. The verbiage of the global warming deniers mirrors the terrible struggle that the pro-smoking lobby undertook to shed doubt about tobacco smoke as a carcinogen. Some of the same players have been involved in both campaigns.

HOUSING AFFORDABILITY Queensland housing is more affordable than its southern counterparts, according to QIC chief economist Dr Matthew Peter when he addressed the Master Builders Economic Breakfast in Brisbane earlier this month.

The average Brisbanite needed to devote less than 30 per cent of their disposable income in order to service their mortgage payments, as opposed to Sydney where that figure jumped to more than 40 per cent and Melbourne where it was hovering around 37 per cent, Dr Peter said.

He added that Brisbane was a far more attractive market than its southern neighbours, with rental yields more than one percent higher than in Sydney or Melbourne.

“In Queensland, growth is finally turning around and the worst appears to be passing,” Dr Peter said.

“Population growth is starting to pick up, both from overseas and interstate.

However, Queensland can only expect population growth to hover around 1.5 per cent, down from more than two

CENSUS POINTS TO BOOM CITIES THE housing data from the 2016 Census highlights the increase in housing stock between 2011 and 2016, highlighting the changing type of housing being developed in our capital cities, according to Core Logic’s Cameron Kusher.

Data from the latest Census (2016) shows that there has been a large uplift in the number of dwellings across the capital cities between 2011 and 2016.

Between the two Census periods, Canberra has seen the greatest percentage increase in total housing stock followed by Melbourne, Darwin and Perth.

“These four cities have each seen

their housing stock increase by more than 11 per cent over the five years.

While the nation has been in the midst of a dwellings construction boom over recent years, the total volume of housing stock increased by a lower proportion in Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth and Hobart between 2011 and 2016 than they did between 2006 and 2011,” Mr Kusher said.

Mr Kusher said when considering the different types of housing, the data highlights that over the the five years between Census there has been a shift towards denser housing stock being added to the capital cities.

“Interestingly, while driving around inner city areas you would be led to

believe that it is higher density units which have been most abundant in new supply, the data points to medium density supply having ramped up the most,” he said.

“In Sydney (17.9 per cent), Melbourne (61 per cent), Brisbane (29.6 per cent), Adelaide (46.5 per cent), Perth (49.4 per cent) and Canberra (36.9 per cent) it was medium density housing types which recorded the greatest increase in stock over the five years.

“In each of these cities, except for Adelaide and Perth, separate house stock saw the smallest increase of the three housing types over the five years.” ●

The newest album from Calvin Harris shows that the artist has decided to shrink from the spotlight and embrace the discreet pleasures of anonymity and suits the Scottish producer like palm trees suit a blue Caribbean backdrop. Funk Wav Bounces is the furthest thing from a grand statement, personal, artistic or otherwise.

The lead single and opener “Slide” is that rare track that does exactly what it purports to do, slipping across the consciousness as if it were coated in sunscreen.

The breezy collaboration makes the most of its guests’ talents; Frank Ocean lends his chilled-out, above-it-all swagger to the sunny vocal hook while Quavo and Offset of Migos infuse their verses with just the right amount of playful braggadocio.

The veteran suspense novelist is off on a happy lark with “Camino Island,” a resort-town tale that reads as if Grisham is taking a vacation from writing John Grisham novels. Instead of the usual suspense of his 20-plus legal thrillers, he takes readers to an island off the coast of Florida, a sleepy place whose town’s social life is enlivened by a busy independent bookstore run by a garrulous peacock who has a differentcoloured suit for every day of the week.

“Camino” begins with the theft, and the quick, precise portraits of the perpetrators lead you to assume this is going to be a caper novel ... but is it?

Young, sassy, clever, funny and warm but with plenty of tension, twists and menace - Spider-Man: Homecomings is the superhero movie we didn’t know we needed.

A warm coming of age flick with a young Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland) trying to cope with his new identity as the web-slinging super hero. On a high after his debut with the Avengers his head has been turned by the glamour and excitement, and by his new mentor Tony Stark.

But he’s only 15 and living with his Aunt May (Marisa Tomei) and instead of traipsing all over the world he needs to settle down and get back to high school and routine. It has a high school caper feel for the teens but with enough nuances to keep the adults entertained.

WHAT’S ON FEAST OF MUSIC IN THE NIGHT Another fantastic feast of sound comes to The J tomorrow night.

Sound Feast live music nights started in January 2016.

Hot 91.1 will be lighting up the skies above Noosa in the inaugural Hot91.1 Fire in the Sky Noosa at Noosaville Lions Park on Saturday 22 July.

As the launch event for Noosa Alive, Hot 91.1 Fire in the Sky begins at 3pm with an afternoon of live entertainment on the main stage, a taste of what’s to come for the following 10 days of Noosa Alive.

BUFFET BAND WILL BE A TASTY TREAT This Saturday, 15 July, Australia’s premier Jimmy Buffet tribute band comes to the Tewantin Noosa RSL club.

This band includes some of the most talented and professional musicians in south-east Queensland playing an array of instruments that recreate the music and songs of Jimmy Buffet and the Coral Reefer Band.

Montserrat will take visitors on a musical voyage through the islands of the Caribbean where they will hear the unique sounds of steel drums blending with keyboards, saxophone, trumpet, guitars, drums and percussion along with great vocals.

CREAMY PENNE CARBONARA INGREDIENTS 375g Coles Australian penne 20g Coles Australian butter 200g Don middle bacon rashers, rind removed, thinly sliced 300ml Coles thickened cream 2 extra large Coles Australian free range eggs, lightly whisked 1/3 cup (25g) Coles shredded parmesan 1 tablespoon coarsely chopped chives METHOD Step 1 - Cook the penne in a large saucepan of boiling water following packet directions or until al dente. Drain, reserving 1/4 cup (60ml) of the cooking liquid.

Step 2 - Meanwhile, melt the butter in a large frying pan over high heat. Cook the bacon, stirring, for 3-4 mins or until crisp.

Add the cream. Bring to the boil. Reduce heat to low and simmer, stirring, for 2-3 mins or until the sauce thickens slightly.

Step 3 - Add the reserved cooking liquid to the frying pan. Remove from heat. Stir in the eggs and parmesan.

Step 4 - Add the penne to the carbonara sauce and toss to combine. Serve sprinkled with chives.

BY HOLLIE HARRIS New research has found that 70 per cent of young Aussie women have experienced feelings of guilt from eating cheese.

The most common reason for that guilt is that women think it’s fattening, with 31per cent saying they have limited their consumption or avoided cheese for that reason.

Dairy Australia Dietitian, Glenys Zucco said that there are many reasons to include cheese in the diet.

“Currently, nine out of 10 Australian women don’t consume their recommended serves of dairy each day as advised by the Australian Dietary Guidelines, so women don’t have to feel guilty about increasing their daily consumption of cheese,” she said.

“Despite popular belief, eating cheese as part of a balanced diet is not linked to weight gain. In fact, the latest scientific evidence shows including milk, cheese and yogurt as part of a weight loss plan can help you lose more weight.

“Accumulated research shows that there is a wealth of health benefits linked with the consumption of cheese which is a valuable source of naturally occurring essential nutrients. Adding an extra serve of dairy to your day can be as easy as two slices of cheddar on your sandwich or half a cup of ricotta in your pasta sauce.”

Being proactive about your health will help you ward off illness and get you in tiptop shape. Start supercharging your wellness this winter with these four tips1. Stay hydrated. Unlike in summer, when a sweat session can leave us gasping for a cold drink, dehydration is much less noticeable in colder temperatures. Even mild dehydration can lead to alterations in mood, headaches, fatigue and difficulty concentrating. If cold water is unappealing when the mercury dips, try boiled water with a slice of lemon.

2. Eat well. Fill your plate with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables to give your

body adequate nutrition and increase energy levels. You can use a slow cooker to make easy hot meals like chilli or overnight oatmeal, or turn your green salads into green soups. Green soups are a warmer way to enjoy the same antioxidants and vitamins.

Even fruit can make a comforting snack when poached or roasted - simply mix it with warming spices such as cinnamon, ginger and vanilla bean.

3. Keep exercising. Don’t let the low temperatures and lack of light slow you down! If you can’t bear to head outdoors, you can still increase your fitness at home - do body weight exercises using your stairs, a chair or the floor. 4. Stress less and stay connected.

COMMUNITY UPDATES POMONA QAS CENTURY

DIVERSITY II ON DISPLAY

Pomona ambulance service will celebrate its 100th anniversary on 15 July with a display from the ambulance museum including a vintage ambulance and uniforms and other memorabilia. There will be a sausage sizzle put on by the Cooroy-Pomona service cadets and a display with the local ambulance committee. During the day, there will be a CPR masterclass and first aid demonstrations from the cadets. Volunteers are needed and guests are welcome.

A small group of dedicated local artists who meet monthly and form the Pomona Gallery Friends Group will hold their annual exhibition from 22 July.

Hailing from across the Sunshine Coast and Hinterland, many are involved as volunteers at the Pomona Railway Station Gallery and all are passionate about the arts in the local community.

In conjunction with Pomona’s King of the Mountain Festival, the gallery provides the wonderful space for the group to hold their annual exhibition.

The exhibition is a celebration of the many different personalities and artistic styles of the group and is titled Diversity II. The exhibition will be opened by Mayor Tony Wellington on Saturday 22 July at 11am in the Banana Shed, 10

DECISIVE GRAND FINAL WIN

BY JON LEWIS The Hastings Beach Houses Noosa Dolphins women’s side have taken out the inaugural SCRU Women’s Rugby Competition with an impressive 31 to 5 victory over Caloundra and Cotton Tree on Saturday.

Having matched the senior men's side in being undefeated for the season, the grand final win was a fitting end to the competition for the ‘Phinettes’ according to coach Brent Mitchell.

"The girls executed the game plan perfectly; using our superior speed and muscling up in defence against the bigger Caloundra side."

Player of the match award went to Maggie Glassock who has been a solid performer for the Phinettes all season but, as noted by Mitchell, given the strength of

Caloundra, to achieve the result the girls did shows the team effort has been formidable. not only in the grand final but throughout the year.

"This team looks like it will go on to be a special side for the next few years, and with teams in the Under 14 and Under 16 competitions, the Dolphins have a great platform to grow the sport," Mitchell said.

The interest in women’s rugby continues to grow on the back of the Olympic success of the Australian side.

With the 10-a-side format now finished, the Phinettes are gearing up for the local 7's competition and a number of invitational carnivals such as the Noosa International 7's.

After a slow first half which had the Dolphins behind at half time, the slick backline took advantage of some muscle up front to wrestle back and maintain the lead.

Coach Phelan again pointed to the ever-closing gap between his team and the opposition teams which he predicted very early in the season.

"We knew all along that our opponents would improve as the season went on and that is exactly what has happened. We don’t take any game for granted and the pressure remains on us to continue to do better," Phelan said.

Noosa takes on Caloundra at Caloundra this weekend in another top of the table clash. ●

NOOSA TEAM TOO GOOD FOR BRIBIE ISLAND

BY DOUG MCCONNELL NOOSA CROQUET With the shortest day of the year behind us, the competition in Association, Ricochet and Golf continues apace.

In Association, the oldest format and one requiring the highest level of skill, Noosa fields one team chasing the Lockwood Shield.

Noosa hosted Bribie Island and came out the winner, winning two matches to one, taking 54 hoops to 50.

John Olsen defeated Greg Whymark 26:21; Brenda Bradley lost to Lynda Davis 11:13 and in the doubles John Olsen and Sharon O’Toole defeated Lynda and Greg 17:16.

In the Ricochet pennant race, competing for the Nell Hass Shield, Noosa was again the home side with Nambour the visitors. Noosa won two matches

to one, with Niven Gugich handily defeating Robin Pettman 26:14; Hans Van Moorst losing to Noel Stoddart 15:21; and Hans and Galina Makarova enjoying a very tight win against Robin and Noel 17:16.

In the Golf form of the game, Noosa fields two teams.

Noosa 1 travelled to Nambour and won the day six matches to four, with hoops also in Noosa’s favour 64:56. Ed and Cher Boyd made their debut and Isobell McConnell played with the team for the first time this season.

Individual results were: Isobell defeated Pat Mann 7:2 and lost to Lorraine Smith 6:7; Cher defeated Lorraine Smith 7:6 but lost to Pat Mann 5:6; Margaret Lewins defeated both Judy Starr and Lesley Brown 7:4 in both matches; Ed Boyd won 6:5 against Lesley Brown and 5:4 against Judy Starr.

In the doubles, Noosa lost both matches with

Isobell and Cher falling 7:10 to Pat and Lorraine while Margaret and Ed lost 7:8 to Judy and Lesley.

Noosa 2 was home to Headland and lost 4:6 matches and 55:68 hoops. Noosa 2 felt the forcing out of Peter Richardson and Ray Powley whose strong play meant they lowered their handicaps beyond the shield eligibility cut-off point.

It’s a strange system where handicaps can change within a season. ●

On the last end with the scores at 20-18, Greg was holding two shots to even the game. Unfortunately, he put both bowls into the ditch allowing Veronis with her last bowl to make a superb shot which ended up only two inches from the jack to win the game. Well done!

Second semi between Linda McDougall and Charlie Dewhirst against Gaye Bible and Mel Hobbins was just as exciting.

Linda and Charlie led all the way up to the 17th end before Gaye and Mel took the lead. On the last end, Charlie was holding five shots, however Mel played a very strategic bowl giving Gaye and Mel the match 18-16. Congratulations to all players on their sportsmanship.

The Mixed Pairs final will be played between Gaye Bible and Mel Hobbins against Rick Goulding and Veronis O’Connor. Best of luck to all players.

Craig/Harrison narrowly accounted for Lucas/James but surprisingly for many, it was the sometimes erratic Iian taking out John in straight sets.

The stand-out performer on the night was Roger Gore, and with son Lucas enjoyed a rare double of securing individual honours in Division 1 and Division 2 respectively as well as sharing victory in the final. ●

WEEKEND AT THE WHALEBONE Like the Noosa Festival of Surfing, the Dukefest and the late, lamented Biarritz Surf Festival, Perth’s Whalebone Classic is one of those iconic longboard events that has come much bigger over the years than a mere surf contest. Putting coastal Cottesloe into a festive mood in the depths of a fairly chilly winter, the Whalebone might struggle for waves at times, but there is always plenty of aloha spirit on hand.

I’ve been trying to get to the Whalebone for several years now - the last time I was invited to do a gig there a volcanic ash cloud marooned me in Bali - so I was stoked to finally make it, courtesy of Surfing WA, to the 20th Whalebone celebrations last weekend. Flying straight from a thankfully ash-free Bali into winter in the West was a bit of a climatic shock, but once I’d wedged myself into my 15-year-old 3:2 steamer was I really that skinny at 50! - I found that the water at Isolators Reef wasn’t too bad, and the little waves on offer were quite fun.

Regular Noosa visitor and great mate, Norm Bateman, kitted me out with a spare Josh Constable Creative Army logger and together we formed the CA Senior Team in the old boy ranks.

After a stellar showing on Saturday, unfortunately both Norm and I fell victim to a high tide wave drought in the Sunday morning grovel, and spent the rest of the event watching from the Gage Roads craft beer tent. Ah, well.

Fortunately for Noosa, our muchimproved surf dancer Kristy Quirk held the flag high in the women’s divisions, taking out a swag of trophies, while Hayden Swan

was all over the amateur men’s. In the WSL Pro events, Natsumi Taoko got the better of Kathryn Hughes with a best single wave score for the entire event of 9.6, while Jack Entwistle styled his way past Dean Bevan.

Founded by Peter Dunn and wife Simone back in 1998 and named after a whalebone he found on the beach at Isolators, the Whalebone is one of those comps that swirls by in a mist of good times and laughter and seems to be over in a nano-second, leaving you hungry for more.

I’ll be back, with a slightly bigger wetsuit.

HAPPY HOMECOMING FOR THE GINGER GENIUS In front of a packed house in the penthouse conference room of Lavan Legal in downtown Perth, overlooking the beautiful Swan River, I was stoked to share the guest speaking duties with surfboard builder turned philanthropist Nev Hyman at a cocktail event called The Business of Surfing.

And indeed, I’ve never seen so many suits turn out for a fairly salty evening.

One of the West’s leading legal firms, Lavan is also a great supporter of West Australian surfing and a number of philanthropic causes, which they managed to tie together neatly last Friday night, with me giving a potted history of the surf industry and Nev explaining how he morphed from boardbuilder to a leader in the field of recycling plastics into wood replacement products to build emergency Third World housing.

Nev’s story is a fascinating one, and he held the room spellbound while he told it. Briefly, Nev was born in Perth, he got his start in surfboards with a brand called Odyssey back at the start of the ‘70s, and later changed the name to Nev’s Future Shapes and moved it back east to the Gold Coast. Over the next couple of decades Nev showed himself to be a shaper in demand by some of the world’s leading pro surfers, and a great marketing man. Remember those huge Nev super boards and the Guinness Book of Records attempts?

In more recent times, Nev’s creation Firewire Surfboards has been at the forefront of creating high performance surfboards with minimal environmental impact. His ultimate sale of the company to Kelly Slater and other partners has now enabled him to create NevHouse, which has become his abiding passion.

Listening to Nev explain the philosophy behind NevHouse, what it’s already achieved and where it’s going, was nothing less than inspiring, during our gig at Lavan and over coffee during the Whalebone weekend.

The need for safe, affordable housing in the developing world is staggering. That Nev has discovered a way to deliver it using recyclables is astounding.

And after trials in Vanuatu and other places, he is only just beginning the long road to helping solve a major world problem while building a stable, sustainable company that will go the distance.

I’m working with Nev on some exciting news for NevHouse in Noosa. Watch this space. ●

STRONGER, FITTER AND WITH LOTS OF FUN IN CHALLENGE The Noosa Aquatic Centre has just completed its first 8-week challenge and the results have been outstanding!

All 19 participants gained strength, reduced their waist circumference and felt so much fitter as the challenge drew to an end.

“I thoroughly enjoyed the Noosa Aquatic Centre 8-week challenge. The sessions were fun, varied and challenging. The trainers, Georgina and Riley, did an awesome job motivating and challenging each member of the group while also providing some laughs

and advice. I joined the challenge to gain motivation and for the chance to exercise with others. The improved strength and fitness and pain relief I gained were added bonuses," Narelle Nightingale, one of two winners, said.

The feedback from all participants was glowing, with fun being a central theme.

Janet Mitchell was the people’s choice winner, said she loved the 8-week challenge.

“Never having been to a gym before, I had no idea what I was in for,” Janet said.

“It was definitely a challenge, but

Georgina and Riley led, cajoled and encouraged me all the way. I lost weight, I lost centimetres and best of all, I am so much fitter, and I had fun, fun, fun! I’ve already recommended it to friends.”

If you need some motivation to get your summer body ready, now is the time to act.

The Noosa Aquatic Centre is starting the next challenge on Tuesday 25 July.

TAKING THE BULL BY THE HORN

BY RON LANE Despite being somewhat marred by hysterical outbursts, The Battle Of Brisbane will certainly go down in Australia’s sporting history as one of our greatest events ever.

Minutes after the ring announcer Michael Buffer announced to the 52,000 fans in Suncorp Stadium, that Brisbane’s Jeff Horn was the new welterweight champion of the world, I showed my notes regarding the official judges’ points tally, to the gentleman seated next to us.

The judges, all neutrals (two from the USA, one Argentina) scored the fight thus: Judge Chris Flores 115-113, Judge Ramon Cerdan 115-113 and Judge Waleska Roldan 117-111; all in favour of Horn.

After a moment's pause he pointed to the 115-113 tally and said, “I can accept that, but the 117 is a bit much.

Horn won, but not by that margin.”

I agreed.

The gentleman was a very patriotic, but bitterly (understandably) disappointed Filipino. Enough said.

One of the cold hard facts of international boxing is: if you want to become unpopular to the sentimental biased fans, step up as a virtual unknown and beat a legend.

If you don’t believe this, just look at the great Gene Tunney.

The man, who twice did the unbelievable, beat the legendary Jack Dempsey; it wasn’t just unbelievable

but also, to many, it was unforgivable.

Now the dust has settled and the emotional patriotic response has passed, it is time to look at other facts of the bout; some not quite so obvious.

The most obvious was that the champion, Manny Pacquiao, had defiantly underestimated his opponent.

How many times did we see him in the media talking on his mobile especially at the official welcome. So where was his mindset? In the ring or in the Philippines Senate, of which he is a member?

Then it was declared that Pacquiao could take him whenever he wanted.

As Pacquiao himself admitted after the fight, cut bruised and bleeding “I didn’t expect it to be that tough. He is definitely very tough boy.”

Then add the fact that promoter Bob Arum warned the Filipinos: “Be careful, this kid is tough and can take a punch.”

To not only ignore but laugh at a warning from a promoter such as Arum, who has been in the game since 1965 - and involved with such fighters as Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard and Roberto Duran - is ridiculous.

To underestimate an opponent is to lose.

From the Horn camp; Horn losing 4.5kg 15 hours before the fight could, if it went the distance, be a turning factor (regarding fatigue) from rounds

10, 11 and 12. But it was not to be.

After losing Round 9 by a 10-8 margin, Horn, on the brink of defeat, came back so strong as to win Round 12, 10-9, on all judges’ cards.

This announced to the world, that here was an Australian fighter of courage and fortitude; and above all a Queenslander of dignity - no big mouth and no trash talk.

It was also interesting to note that Lewis gave Horn the fight by eight rounds to four. Further to this he added: “This kid just beat an all-time great in his 18th fight. Anything is possible.”

The judges - all unanimous - are now being criticised by “experts” including movie stars!

Let’s look at Judge Chris Flores.

Flores was educated at Harvard Law School and is now practicing law, has officiated at 315 fights including 11 world title and 20 national and international titles. Both he and Judge Cerdan returned the same total.

During his career he has officiated at world title for both the I.B.F and W.B.O. Add to this some “experts” believe the computer stats, without having any knowledge of what constitutes a scoring punch.

One set tells us that Horn - a world class fighter - threw 625 punches and only scored with 73. The mind boggles! ●

The next NAC 8-week challenge starts on Tuesday 25 July.

ELLA AND BEN ARE OFF TO YOUTH GAMES

BY RON LANE On Sunday morning when the Australian Youth Team boards the flight to the Bahamas, two members of the Cooroy Impact Amateur Boxing Academy, Ella Boot and Ben Cameron-Hands will be on board.

They will be there as members of the team to represent Australia at the 2017 Commonwealth Youth Games to be held at Nassau from 19-23 July.

To be selected as members of this team is one of the highest honours that the athletic Youth of Australia (14-18 years) can receive.

On arrival the team will become part of 1300 competitors chosen to represent 70 nations and they will contest, amongst other events, athletics, boxing, swimming, judo, cycling, and rugby 7s.

With major countries such as England, Ireland, Canada, Scotland and Australia in attendance, the standard will be of high.

Boxing in their divisions, Ben will contest the 49kg and Ella the 60kg - we wish them well.

It has been a very busy year for Ella, having just returned

from a UK/Hungarian tour along with club-mate Chloe Halley, as members of the Australia Futures Team, with both performing well.

For Ella, it was three fights for three wins - two TKOs, one of which was the Hull Cup in Sheffield.

For Chloe it was five fights for three wins. When fighting in the Wild Cats tournament in Hungary, Chloe won the Best Female Junior Award.

Well done and welcome home to both.

At the recent Oceania tournament on the Gold Coast, Impact's Tyler Blizzard, boxing in the 52kg division, qualified to represent Australia at the Elite Mens World Championships to be held in Hamburg Germany in August.

This young fighter has a very impressive record having four times won the Australian Golden Gloves and six Australian Championships.

Add to this the silver medal at the 2015 Youth Commonwealth Games and you definitely have a fighter to be watched.

Also very busy at the Oceania was Impact's Bryce Hegarty, who entered the Super Quattro. ●

DURSTON BROTHERS ARE KINGS Coolum Beach became ‘Thundercat central’ over the weekend, with the nation’s fastest inflatable catamaran crews delivering two full days of spectacular competition in the annual ‘King Of Coolum’ title race.

Although forced out of one of Saturday’s early races due to engine trouble, four-time state champs Jay and Nathan Durston racing for Getaway Resort - managed to bounce back, gaining enough points to take first place ahead of determined newcomers, Jesse and Levi Johnson.

“We’ve finally taken the title. We’ve been racing in the event since it started and always had mechanical hiccups or been beaten by better teams on the day, but luckily this year, we just scraped in with a win,” said Pilot Jay Durston.

“We had one breakdown on Saturday and ended up missing a race, so that put us back a bit on the points. But we managed to stay consistent for the rest of weekend and posted enough race wins to take the title.”

Although Saturday’s 4-5ft swell proved challenging for competitors, glassy conditions and smaller swell on Sunday made for quicker races.

“We usually prefer the choppier swell, but we just got away lucky with the smooth conditions. The thing with conditions is everyone’s got to deal with the same sort of track, so it still makes it interesting,” Jay said.

Novice competitors Jesse and Levi Johnson mounted a huge challenge across the weekend, finishing with a hard-fought second place on the overall point-score just 20 points behind the Durston brothers and taking first place in the ‘modified class’.

The premier Thundercat event was not without incident, with two competitors injured during the first race of the weekend.

Pilot Andrew Pomas hit the first wave of the day hard and was transported to hospital for observation after severely jarring his neck, while Co-Pilot, Tye Wood, had to sit the weekend out due to a disclocated shoulder.

“This weekend was another big success.

We drew a big crowd of spectators across the two days and all of the boats were relatively safe out in the water,” Brisbane Coast Thundercats President and new titleholder, Nathan Durston, said.

“The conditions were a challenge out there on the first day. There was a bit of a

big swell and a big break on the sandbank. A couple of guys went over, flipped their boats on the first wave of the day. But Sunday was a bit cleaner and we had less incidents so it ended up being quicker - and that makes for good racing.

With a handful of new racing crews taking on the tough Coolum break for the first time this year, Nathan said they handled the conditions well.

“They all went well. They’re not far off the pace; it’s a learning curve. You always start at the bottom and work your way up, but they’ll be up the pointy end of the

scoreboard before long and there will be a lot more competitors coming through the ranks soon. It’ll be great.

“King of Coolum is fantastic every year; we love it. We always have the help of Coolum Business and Tourism and our PR champion, Kim Anderson. The council gets on board and helps with the permits and we’ve always been welcomed by the Surf Club. Even the locals seem to love us - they’re always asking questions and we’ve never been without a crowd here at Coolum - it’s an unreal feeling.” ●

PERFECT CONDITIONS FOR THE HOLIDAYS The Noosa River has to be one of the best fishing systems in South East Queensland; with a diverse range of species that is constantly changing through the year, great areas for families to enjoy and plenty of structure for fish to call home.

There have been some great trevally including GT, tea leaf, golden and big eye have been coming from around Munna Point, Munna Bridge, the Sand Bags as well as Inner Woods Bay. Surface presentations have been the way to go with smaller surface working well. When fishing these smaller surface lures it is a good idea to upgrade the trebles to cope with the bigger fish.

Bream are in good numbers in the river as the water temperatures drops. Small grub pattern soft plastics or lightly weighted flesh baits have been fishing well. Tailor are also in good numbers and are taking live baits throughout the river with the river mouth in the low light periods your best bet.

Flathead are in great numbers with many fish well over the legal limit, these big breeding females are protected and are vital to the sustainability of the fishery. So take a quick picture for the brag wall and release ASAP. Whiting are also in great numbers with plenty of families catching these sweet fish

along the foreshore of the river, worm’s yabbies and peeled prawns have been the prime baits.

The beaches are firing on all cylinders, in particular the gutters along Noosa North Shore. Good sized tailor are the star catch at the moment with fish weighing in at up to 4kg.

The best baits have been fresh mullet fillets, bonito fillets and the good old pilchard.

Tailor catches have certainly improved with the run-in tide on the open beach at first light being the pick. There have been a couple of trophy size tailor caught around the 5 to 6 kilo mark, these fish are usually taken after dark.

Good quality dart are on most beaches Mudjimba to Double Island, using those traditional baits like pipis and worms on a baitholder hook will give you the best results.

Flathead is another species that are prevalent at the moment with anglers walking and casting the beaches the most successful.

If you look for those closer sandbanks and cast your bait across them working your way down the beach with the sweep, you should come across some good fish.

Offshore out of Noosa, we are still seeing the odd mackerel even though the water temperature is starting to drop. Halls Reef has seen some nice mackeral with most caught on live yakkas.

Those that fished North Reef got good

Craig Mullet with a nice feed of tailor. snapper, pearlies, cod, sweetlip, cobia and spangled emperor. Snapper have been the most sought-after fish with many anglers targeting these fantastic table fish. They can be targeted a number of ways including bait, plastics and Micro Jigs.
