Cinema slow-mo The developer behind the proposed cinema and entertainment complex at the old Cranbourne Pool site is adament he is not backing away from the project.

Progress of the planning application has been slowed by Casey Council and the state Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) according to TM Design Group CEO Ian Macklin.

Mr Macklin said he hoped to have the new cinema and entertainment complex open and operating by now but the council and DELWP continue to request more reports on the site.

“It is still ongoing and the permit is going through council and DELWP approval processes,” he said.

“We are waiting on another report in relation to trees and vegetation on the site but we hope that will be in in about another week or two.”

The trees in question are where TM Designs want to build a car park.

Mr Macklin said without the car park, patrons of the new cinema would be forced to use the turf club’s car park, 250 meters away from the old pool.

“They (council) are suggesting we use the turf club car park which people will have to walk a quarter of a kilometre down the street to an unlit car park,” he said.

“The safety of our future patrons is paramount and we want a safe, fully lit carpark on site to keep people safe.”

Mr Macklin said he doesn’t want to cause any stress to the environment and had even offered to replace the trees that are in the way of the planned development.

DELWP said the vegetation in question has been identified as significant as it may be part of a bandicoot habitat but they are happy to work with Mr Macklin to find a solution.

“Both the City of Casey and DELWP have requested further information from the proponent to support these decisions,” a DELWP spokesperson said.

“The site supports significant remnant native vegetation and may also serve as a bandicoot habitat corridor.”

“DELWP has continued to engage with the proponent, the local Committee of Management and Council to ensure that any proposal for the site is undertaken in a manner that responds to and provides appropriate environmental protections.”

City of Casey Council said while more information was needed, the application was moving forward.

Council’s acting Manager Statutory Planning and Building Services Craig Tate said for the application to progress Council needed more information about the trees.

“Council and the Department of Water, Land and Planning are waiting for the applicant to provide further information to enable an assessment of the application, including a report addressing the vegetation on site,” he said.

“Council has afforded the applicant additional time as requested.

“Until a complete application is received, Council is unable to advance the planning assessment.”

Despite the hold-ups, Mr Macklin said he was as dedicated as ever to delivering the project.

“It is a slow process and we are all frustrated at this point but it is ticking forward and I am not going to back away from it,” he said.

“Everyone wants it, everyone needs it and it’s going to be good for Cranbourne, if common sense prevails.”

Mr Macklin said he wanted the project to move forward to bring new employment opportunities to the area.

“If this development doesn’t go ahead, there are least 40 people who are not going to have a job out if it,” he said.

Mr Macklin said without the support of the Cranbourne and surrounding community, the project could be lost to government bureaucracy.

“We are looking to the community to back us,” he said.

“We need everyone who wants to see this cinema happen to have a talk with their local councillor and politician and ask them to support this.”

Megaswim for MS research Teams of people came together at the Casey RACE swimming pool to raise funds for MS research by swimming laps for 24 consecutive hours on Saturday 8 July and Sunday 9 July.

The MS 24 Hour Megaswim aims to raise as much money as possible to help people who are suffering from the disease as well as to help find a cure.

Teams also competed for prizes and trophies during the event as well as joined in activities to keep everyone motivated and have a great time.

The event attracted support from groups such as the City of Casey, Casey RACE and the Kiwanis Club of Berwick.

MS Event co-ordinator Kelly Tyndall said the Casey 24 Hour Swim event was a great success.

“It was an amazing event and everything went really smoothly,” she said.

“We have raised a total of $10,145, but donations are open for another four months.”

Kids' soccer match drama

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Football Federation Victoria is investigating an ugly incident which led to the abandonment of an under-10s Casey Comets soccer game.

In the 18 June match, an eight-yearold Comets player is alleged to have felled a Peninsula Strikers opponent with a tackle, and then spun and kicked the player in the back.

Strikers coach Troy Hicks allegedly ran in from the sidelines and loudly remonstrated with the Comets player at close quarters.

The father of the Comets player then entered the fray, pushing Mr Hicks away from his son.

Up to a dozen adult spectators entered the pitch, and the game was abandoned at the 15-minute mark.

In the aftermath, it emerged the Comets players and parents had bonded at a kickboxing gym session just

days before the incident. As a result, the team’s coach Michael Somerville was dismissed by Comets administrators.

Some of the facts are in dispute, but Star News understands the two young players involved have been traumatised by the incident, missed school and taken a break from the game.

Mr Hicks said he would face an FFV tribunal over the incident on 26 July. Depending on the outcome, Victoria Police may also investigate, he said.

He said he wouldn’t comment on the incident until after the hearing.

Some Comets affiliated people say Mr Hicks yelled threateningly into the face of the Comets player.

A Strikers parent says Mr Hicks had stepped in to protect the kicked player from further attack.

Casey Comets president Dawn Stone said the incident “wasn’t Troy’s

finest hour” but its severity had been exaggerated.

“The kick wasn’t very nice. It happens in sport but it doesn’t happen every week in our game.

“The coach was being very protective of his player. He didn’t threaten anybody, he was upset.”

She said the issue was being fuelled by a discontent Mr Somerville, who was sacked because the kickboxing session included physical “tactics” that avoided detection by a referee.

“It’s a magnificent art but I wouldn’t bring it as a form of coaching for eight and nine-year-old children,” Ms Stone said.

“At this age, the competitive side is secondary. It’s about teaching the love of the game and development.”

Mr Somerville was bemused that he’d been stood down while Mr Hicks was still coaching.

He described the kickboxing ses-

sion at a Comets parent’s gym as a “bonding” session for parents and children. He denied the session involved football or “training my boys to be violent”.

“To blame the kickboxing is just ridiculous. I’ve never had issues with the other boys.

“The kickboxing lesson had zero to do with how the player behaved.

He knows what he did was extremely wrong but he doesn’t know why he did it.”

Mr Somerville, who as a former Strikers coach “didn’t get on” with Mr Hicks, accused Mr Hicks of a “ferocious assault” on the boy.

“He should have shown more selfcontrol. Under no circumstances can a coach run out on the field.

“The boy was terrified to have an adult run at him like that and come screaming at him.”

Referee Alexander May, who is

also a friend of Mr Somerville, said he would have sent the Comets player off for the kick - if he had the chance. “(Mr Hicks) didn’t run to the player on the ground, so to protect that player, but to verbally assault the boy who did it.

“For the first few days, the boys were shocked and upset. It’s because of the behaviour of the grown-up people.”

FFV has a child safety policy, declaring a zero-tolerance approach to child abuse and that all children have a right to feel safe.

According to the code of conduct, speaking to a minor in an “overly harsh, threatening, intimidating, shaming, derogatory, demeaning or humiliating” way is prohibited.

In a statement, FFV said there was an investigation “ongoing in line with the Federation’s existing Grievance, Disciplinary and Tribunal procedures”.

“FFV will not be commenting on the investigation.”

Rapid-fire gunshots leave a family in terror A Hampton Park family has endured a terrifying night inside their own home when an unknown gunman fired bullets into their house on Oaktree Drive.

Police are searching for witnesses following the shooting that occurred just past 8pm on Sunday 9 July.

Five members of the family were home, including a two-year-old child, when about six shots were fired into cars on the property and into a bedroom window.

Resident Mandy, who did not want her surname published, said her and her family had no idea why their house was targeted.

“We are innocent; we have no idea why this has happened,” she said.

“It was so scary and we have done nothing to anybody.”

She said one of the bullets went through her bedroom window.

“I’m lucky I wasn’t in bed,” she said.

“We were just at home watching TV and then we heard two gunshots, well I didn’t know they were gunshots at first, I just heard bangs, and said ‘what’s that’ and I jumped up to go out the front door.

“And then with that I heard bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, then I realised they were gunshots and I grabbed the phone and called the police.”

Mandy said it was her brother who sprang into action and went outside to see what was going on.

“My brother ran down the drive-

way because he heard them as well,” she said.

“So I was trying to yell at him to get back in the house and don’t run towards it and he ended up chasing the guy down the street. He was on foot, not in a car.”

Despite her brother giving chase, Mandy said there was no way they could tell who the shooter was.

“We couldn’t see him because he had a hoodie on and had it pulled up tight. We couldn’t see anything,” she said.

A nearby neighbour, who did not want to be identified, said this wasn’t the first time something like this had occurred in the area.

“This road is very busy with hooning cars and people yelling. All the time it is quite noisy,” he said.

“We have heard this before, a few times a year, bang, bang, bang, but I don’t know if it’s fireworks or guns.”

The neighbour said he heard the gunshots on Sunday night as well as people yelling in the street.

“I think I heard maybe five or six shots moving up the road; the sound was moving up the road,” he said.

“Someone was yelling and I heard a voice following the shots, the voice followed a few seconds after the shots. They were just yelling, I couldn’t understand them.”

Investigating officer Detective Senior Constable Emily Donnelly said police were appealing for any witnesses to come forward to help their investigation.

Network helps homeless

By Victoria Stone-Meadows Casey council is set to establish and chair a homelessness network for the Casey Cardinia Region following a unanimous vote at a council meeting on Tuesday 4 July.

The decision follows a meeting between Casey council and service providers in the region which help people in precarious housing situations.

The meeting took place on 7 June this year with representatives from WAYSS, the Cranbourne Salvation Army, the Southern Homelessness Services Network, ERMHA, The Andrews Centre and Rotary Club of Cranbourne.

This led the council to set up a network for people facing homelessness in the municipality.

The new network will bring together the currently available options for emergency housing and other outreach programs in Casey to ensure a multiagency approach to homelessness.

The report that came to council from the meeting also recommends that Casey hosts a housing summit with the Victorian Minister for Housing Martin Foley.

Casey Councillor Geoff Ablett, along with Cr Milla Gilic, is the driver behind this plan, and he said the meeting made it clear the available service

to people in region was scattered.

“The great thing we discovered is there are people that have been doing these things, but have never actually met each other,” he said.

“The meeting we held brought it all together and that’s what it is all about.”

“What we are discovering is there are some organisations already operating in City of Casey that have heard of the others, but we want to bring everyone together and that may mean a bigger group to lobby for Casey to address the issues that vulnerable people face.”

Cr Ablett said the aim of the housing summit and the homelessness net-

work was to bring the many service providers in Casey together to better manage all the factors that could lead to vulnerable housing situations.

“The idea is helping people overcome and seek that help they need, which is a very difficult hurdle,” he said.

“We aim to bring everyone together and get a better understanding regionally, and hopefully find the best model for homelessness and help each other.”

“In theory, this will then springboard into a commitment for a permanent solution for homelessness and vulnerable people in the Casey Cardinia region.”

While the City of Casey wants to help solve the homeless problem in the area, Cr Ablett said they could also extend that into more social welfare support.

“It is quite exciting; pooling resources to get a better bang for our buck and helping more people,” he said.

“There is a need for this now, but we are also advocating for rehab centres and things like that so council is committed to that as part of advocacy program.”

“We want to take all these issues head-on, and this summit is the first step.”

New resident group has its eye on Casey coastal crime

By Victoria Stone-Meadows Casey’s Costal townships of Tooradin, Blind Bight, Warneet, and Cannons Creek have banded together and formed a new Neighbourhood Watch Group to keep residents safe.

While crime in the costal villages is low compared to other areas of the City of Casey, Tooradin resident Danielle Symons said nowhere is as safe as it used to be.

“We’ve been very relaxed down here on the coast, even in Tooradin have an internal garage door I would leave open all the time,” she said.

“But everything is changing and that can be said about anywhere, there is a bit of a sense of fear here now so we wanted to do something about it.”

About 12 months ago, a Coastal Villages Neighbourhood Watch group was started in the area and Ms Synmons has been an active member ever since.

In November 2016, Ms Symons took over leadership of the group along with

Blind Bight residents Anne Gallagher and Troy Pearl.

“The main aim is to promote the group by encouraging people to get to know their neighbours and regain that sense of community that has been lost and I couldn’t have done that wihtout the other comittee members,” she said.

“We see it as a great benefit to spread the word so people know we are here and looking out for them but also it’s a deterrent to criminals too.”

The Coastal Villages Neighbourhood watch want to be pro-active in protecting their communities’ members before crime has a chance to rise in the area.

“We want to put together some signs for the area and promote us as an active community working against crime,” Ms Symons said.

The Coastal Villages Neighbourhood Watch also wants to keep their communities informed and up to date with the latest crime statistics and methods to keep people and possessions safe.

The first community safety forum hosted by the Coastal Villages Neighbourhood Watch was held on Wednesday 5 July where guest speakers informed the coastal communities on all things crime.

Speakers at the event included memberd of Victoria Police, Casey councillor Geoff Ablett and Casey Neighbourhood Watch leader Rob Ward.

Former Labor Mordialloc MP Janice Munch also spoke at the event about domestic violence in the region.

Ms Symons said the event was a success and valuable knowledge was passed on to the residents of the area.

“We had about 50 or 60 people turn up and they asked lots of questions and people spoke to us and we had the opportunity to make great connections,” she said.

However, Ms Symons said without greater participation from people representing all the coastal villages, the Neighbourhood Watch ideal cannot be met.

“A lot of members are older retirees, I and Anne and few of us are younger,” she said.

“We want more people invoked actively because when you run events a lot easier and we also need more representatives from the different coastal villages.”

“The way we will have a better idea of what to do in each village, such as the need for cameras in Blind Bight, and having representatives of the different areas gives us an idea of what they need.”

Fragile orchid’s revival love

By Victoria Stone-Meadows The mystery of the roadside marriage proposal signs has been solved.

Many people in the Casey community, including more than one Loren, were surprised recently by a series of signs along Fisheries Road placed by a mystery romantic proposing to his girlfriend.

After many days of searching, the Cranbourne News can reveal the signs were put in place by Narre Warren South resident Adam Kondarios.

And folks, Loren said ‘yes’.

The recipient of the marriage proposal, Loren Fuccio, has been quiet on the subject with it taking more than a full week for us to hunt her down.

As it turns out, Loren and Adam have escaped the Australian winter and instead have been enjoying a European summer.

A vulnerable species of native orchid has been granted a second lease of life thanks to a Cranbourne-based botanist and the Victorian Royal Botanic Gardens.

Dr Noushka Reiter has propagated the seeds of the nationally threatened Elegant Spider Orchid (Caladenia Formosa) in her labs at the Cranbourne Botanic Gardens.

Dr Reiter has been working with orchids for about 10 years and runs the Orchids Conservation Program for the Royal Botanic Gardens of Victoria.

She says the work that has been put into recovering this particular flower has come to fruition as the flowers are reintroduced into the wild in regional Victoria in the coming weeks.

“The Caladenia Formosa was formerly widespread in Western Victoria and South Australia but have reduced in numbers over about the last 150-200 years due to land clearance, weeds and rabbits,” she said.

“There are less than 100 of these known in the wild, but we’ve been working on this and four other species thanks to Landcare funding from the Federal Government.”

The Elegant Spider Orchid (Caladenia Formosa) is being reintroduced to the wild thanks to a Cranbourne-based botanist. seeds, helping them to propagate in a particular type of fungi.

“We have been propagating them with mycorrhizal fungi,” she said.

“All orchids are reliant upon fungi to propagate the fungi transfer carbon and various nutrients to the orchid; it works kind of like their root system.”

“Orchid seeds are the smallest known plant seeds we have, so they don’t have the lovely

nutrient layer around them like other seeds.”

“So, they get nutrients from the fungi and we allow the fungi and seed to meet so the seed can germinate.”

Dr Reiter and a team of volunteers from the Australasian Native Orchid Society will be reintroducing 180 of these rare flowers into the wilds of Western Victoria.

“Not losing a single species is really important and we can’t overvalue the biodiversity we have, and it’s something worth saving for future generations.”

The Australasian Native Orchid Society has been helping Dr Reiter achieve her goals for almost 10 years and Richard Thompson from the society said the level of community involvement had been a great help.

“There have been plenty of local people to come along and see what we are doing,” he said.

“Quite a lot of the planting we are doing is on private land and we have found the landowners are keen to help too.”

Mr Thompson said he was surprised at first to learn how interested the farmers were in helping reintroduce endangered plant species.

I have sent the following message about the proposed suburb of McPherson to the City of Casey on a contact form and have no idea whether it was transmitted. The name of the suburb honours a pioneer of Clydesdale, near Yandoit, instead of a Clyde pioneer as claimed by the researchers engaged by the City of Casey.

This suburb is supposed to have been named after a resident of Clyde but as has been pointed out to you, the McPherson family lived at Clydesdale. A simple search on Trove will show that there is no McPherson, Clyde link and countless results can be found for McPherson, Clydesdale; this place being in Mt Franklin Shire north of Daylesford. Be warned that, as a local historian who detests the corruption of history, I will ridicule your municipality if it asks for this name to be gazetted.

By Victoria Stone-Meadows State Government funding is set to allow better outcomes in Monash Health’s maternity care with patients for whom English is a second language.

The government’s Language Service Innovation Grants program will allow Monash Health to create a more efficient data system to provide interpreters in their maternal health branch.

Chief Allied Health Officer Kate MacRae said while the system was in the development stage at the moment, Monash Health looked forward to im-

proving outcomes for linguistically diverse patients.

“Around one in 10 maternity clients at Monash Health require an interpreter and we recognised some inefficiency in the way we engage professional interpreters for maternity clients,” she said.

“As a result, we have commenced an innovative project to improve the way we provide interpreter services in maternity.”

The new data system will allow the health care provider to quickly match patients with interpreters if that is what

they prefer for an appointment or during labour.

“We hope to see an increase in the number of interpreters used, and we will measure the feedback from patients,” Ms McRae said.

Monash Health has embarked on this project as part of its member commitments to the Bridging the Gap partnership.

Bridging the Gap brings together public hospitals, State Government departments, Victorian Foundation for Survivors of Torture and the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute to im-

proive outcomes and experiences for patients.

Ms McRae said the new interpreter data system will help Monash Health to provide a comfortable and positive experience for maternity patients.

“The partnership prioritised improving women’s access to language services in birth suites, recognising the critical importance of communication in labour and potential to improve birth outcomes,” she said.

State Minister for Health Services Jill Hennessy and Minister for Multicultural Affairs Robin Scott both said the programs funded by the Language

Service Innovation Grants program would help all Victorians.

“We are making sure Victoria’s culturally diverse communities can access the high quality and safe care they need and deserve, when they need it,” Ms Hennessy said.

“Victorians come from more than 200 countries, follow more than 130 different faiths and nearly a quarter of the community speak a language other than English,” Ms Scott said.

“We are investing in more interpreters to meet growing demand for language service in our hospitals.”

By Victoria Stone-Meadows Students at St Therese’s Primary School in Cranbourne North were treated to a musical workshop with liturgical composer Andrew Chinn.

Mr Chinn visited the school on Tuesday 27 June to work with the students and present a choir to the school community.

Mr Chinn has been recording christian music for children for almost 20 years, drawing on a rich history of Catholic education.

He said working with the students at St Therese’s was a pleasure.

“It was really good, we worked across the grades and the school has been using my music for a while so it was like working on fertile ground,” he said.

“Especially the choir they put together in the evening, they haven’t been performing together for very long but they were very good.”

Casey Cardinia Libraries have joined in the celebration of the 2018 Commonwealth Games being held in Australia by inviting people to help them fold paper stars.

The stars form part of a wider One Million Stars initiative, with each star representing a peaceful statement against all forms of violence in our communities.

The project invited members of the community to come together peacefully and engage in conversations about the effects of violence and ways to end violent behavior.

Judge Hannan noted the Dutch-born De Waij had a childhood marred by trauma without “real guidance”, and a diagnosed borderline personality disorder.

He had claimed he had been shot, stabbed, kidnapped, abused multiple substances and had a head injury.

“I hope you have the determination and courage to make the changes necessary to step out of the revolving door of drugs and custody,” Judge Hannan said.

She said she must balance De Waij’s possible rehabilitation with the need to protect the community from his “entrenched” offending.

De Waij was jailed for 32 months, with a minimum of 20.

He had already served 321 days in pre-sentence remand.

A Narre Warren North man has been jailed for being the “architect” of the notorious South East Skids hoon meets as well as drug trafficking and firearm offences.

During sentencing, Caspar De Waij, 23, was chastised by County Court judge Lisa Hannan for his disregard for the law in organising “high-risk driving on public streets” that endangered crowds of spectators.

She read out a damning text message from De Waij on 23 August that declared “the South (East Skids) is coming with a bang” ahead of a meet captured on CCTV. “Buckle up and hold on to your mum’s t**s.

“It’s time to just get out and smash sets. And let’s lose cars to taskforce ‘I spend more money chasing hoons than sex offenders’.”

In the lead-up, a procession of Skids hoons had been marched through Dandenong Magistrates’ Court. Some were jailed, some had their cars crushed.

But De Waij wrote: “Let’s bring back the old days.”

He was arrested two days later.

On 11 July, Judge Hannan said it was a very serious, calculated and pre-meditated example of reckless conduct endangering serious injury.

He also pleaded guilty to being a prohibited person possessing a 0.41-calibre shotgun found in Narre Warren and a loaded 0.44 lever-action rifle found under a bed in Carnegie.

The rifle, found with 19 rounds of ammunition, had been stolen from a Cranbourne address.

De Waij dropped it at the house with about $5000 worth of ecstasy and ketamine, just before driving himself to The Alfred hospital to treat a shotgun wound.

Police discovered matching ecstasy tablets and matching rifle ammo as well as $4750 of stolen jewellery in De Waij’s BMW. According to police intercepts, he obtained the BMW in return for a drug debt.

This series of offences began just five weeks after De Waij had been released from custody in April 2016.

He had a “substantial” criminal history, including speeding at 240km/h on a freeway.

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is reminding Australians to stop and think before giving their personal details or hard-earned money to scammers this tax time.

Assistant Commissioner Kath Anderson said 48,084 scams were reported to the ATO between July and October last year.

“We have already seen a five-fold increase in scams from January to May this year and typically expect further increases during the tax time period,” Ms Anderson said.

“Already this year, the ATO has registered over 17,067 scam reports.

Of these, 113 Australians handed over $1.5 million to fraudsters with about 2500 providing some form of personal information, including tax file numbers.

“One victim lost $900,000 to scammers over the course of several months, even borrowing money from family and friends.

“The large number of people lodging their tax returns means scammers are particularly active, so it’s important to keep an eye out for anything that looks suspicious and protect your private information.”

Ms Anderson said Australians are generally good at catching and reporting scams, but some scams are harder to spot than others.

“Scammers locate genuine ATO numbers from our website and project these numbers in their caller ID in an attempt to legitimise their call - a form of impersonation known as “spoofing”.

“While we do make thousands of calls per week to the community, our outbound calls do not project num-

bers on caller ID. If one appears, it’s most likely a scam.

“People should be wary of emails, phone calls and SMS during tax time that claims to be from the ATO, even if it seems legitimate.

“If you’re ever unsure about whether a call, text message or email is genuine, call us on 1800 008 540. If it’s real, we will connect you with the right area of the ATO.” Top tips to avoid tax time traps: 1. Be aware of what is shared: Individuals should only share personal information with people they trust and organisations with a legitimate need for it.

2. Stay secure: Keep mobile devices and computers secure by changing passwords regularly, keeping anti-virus, malware, and spyware protection software up-to-date and don’t click on suspicious links.

3. Don’t reply: Don’t reply to any SMS or email with personal or financial information.

4. Recognise a scam: If someone asks for bank account or personal details, or demands money, refunds or free gifts, be cautious. Also avoid requests in emails or SMS requesting to click on a link to log onto government or banking digital services.

5. Report scams: If anyone feels as though they have been contacted by a scammer, or have fallen victim to a tax-related scam, contact the ATO on 1800 008 540.

Rail loop petition

By Bonny Burrows Calls for an extended rail line from Cranbourne to Kooweerup are gathering pace as the Kooweerup airport becomes a very real possibility.

A community petition for an extended rail line between the two towns has obtained more than 1000 supporters since its creation three months ago, with locals backing creator David Dobson’s plans for a Cranbourne train line loop to free up busy roads and reduce isolation in rural areas.

It follows the announcement an overseas investor has pledged to fund the $5 billion south east airport in Kooweerup.

Under Mr Dobson’s proposal, the Cranbourne/Pakenham line would extend to include Kooweerup, Tooradin, Wonthaggi and Leongatha through the use of existing unused lines and the creation of new tracks.

The Clyde North man said such rail loop would “help so much” if the international airport came to fruition.

If green-lighted, the Kooweerup airport would rival Tullamarine in size, servicing up to 5 million domestic passenger movements annually.

“We’ve seen how Tullamarine is - the traffic to the airport is hectic.

So let’s be proactive about it and get ready (for a local airport) with safer alternatives,” Mr Dobson said.

“And then when/if the airport happens, there will already be a ful-

Even if the airport was “some way into the future - if at all”, Mr Dobson said the need for a rail extension was still there, and wasn’t going away.

“There isn’t much public transport out there, in the Tooradin, Kooweerup, and Wonthaggi areas," Mr Dobson said.

“And I know a lot of people who have disadvantages and are unable to find work, who are either travelling long distances for work on our roads, leading to gridlocked roads, or are isolated,” Mr Dobson said.

“A Paky-Cranbourne loop would free up a lot of high traffic and move a lot of people quicker to their destinations, and the elderly who prefer to catch the train into the city for appointments rather than drive could do so.”

While the petition has yet to be formally presented to local councils, it has been discussed “positively” with Greater Dandenong.

The City of Casey has previously indicated its support for an improved rail network.

Mayor Sam Aziz told Star News on 4 July road infrastructure, including a better rail network, was the “missing piece” of the air-

port’s puzzle.

An airport couldn’t be supported with current infrastructure, councillor Aziz said.

Cardinia Shire has also in the past hinted at the importance of rail upgrades if a south east airport were to exist.

Mr Dobson said he was meeting with government representatives in the coming weeks.

Cranbourne residents have a new way to dispose of their old plastic plant pots.

The Bunnings store is part of a new trial recycling program.

The pots aren’t able to be recycled through kerbside programs because of contamination issues with cleaning and sorting processes.

So Bunnings Cranbourne is encouraging residents to bring in their plastic pots - no matter how old, dirty or broken - and drop them in a designated cage.

Polymer Processes will pick up and recycle the pots, and Garden City Plastics will turn them into new pots for use by greenlife growers.

A Garden City Plastics spokesperson said recycling plastic used less energy than producing it from raw materials.

The energy saving is about 56 gigajoules per tonne of plastic - the electricity used in two Australian homes in a year.

Bunnings Cranbourne complex manager Simon Taylor said they were excited to trial the new service.

“It’s a simple and effective way to do our bit for the environment,” he said.

From Saturday 1 July, Parklea has been accepting nonperishable food donations that will be passed on to 4Cs to make sure no-one goes hungry in the colder months.

Last year the Pakenham and surrounding community donated 330kg of food to 4Cs to provide meals and staple foods to struggling families.

4Cs general manager Cheryl Daly said she was hoping this year’s food drive would be just as successful as last year’s.

“With over 300 families accessing our food room service each month, these items have

made a wonderful contribution,” she said.

“Thankyou to everyone who willingly donated items for the food drive.”

Ms Daly said winter could be a really tough time for families experiencing desperate situations due to violence and other issues that lead to poverty.

“Over the winter period many families have been doing it tough and have needed an extra hand to get them through," she said.

Sales and marketing manager at Parklea Jarod Mills said the food drive never failed to bring out the best of the community.

“We continue to be amazed at the generosity of members of our local communities and hope

to be able to deliver even more to needy families in this year’s food drive,” he said.

“As a developer of communities, we feel it’s important to give back and support local initiatives that help the most vulnerable.”

Members of the public can donate to the food drive with non-perishable items such as long-life milk, cereal, and canned food up until the end of winter.

Drop-off pints will be set up at the Timbertop Estate Sales Office or Arena Shopping Centre.

BOOST IN MEDIAN HOUSE PRICE

MELBOURNE’S buoyant property market is boosting the median house price of towns within commuting distance of the city.

The latest REIV data shows Greater Geelong accounted for almost half of the state’s top growth suburbs in the year to 30 March.

East Geelong experienced Victoria’s largest price growth over the year, up just shy of 30 per cent to a median house price of $575,000.

Meanwhile, Castlemaine, north west of Melbourne, recorded the highest annual growth outside of Geelong.

House prices in the town increased 19.1 per cent over the year to March to a median of $452,500, up from $380,000 for the same period last year.

Strong annual price growth was also recorded in Stawell with the median house price up 14.4 per cent to $210,000.

Double-digit increases were also experienced in Warragul and nearby Drouin, up 12.2 and 11.5 per cent respectively to median house prices of $388,000 and $379,500.

Solid annual price growth was also recorded in Morwell, up 11.3 per cent to a median house price of $170,000; Kilmore, up 11.1 per cent to $368,000 and Heathcote, up 10 per cent to $292,500.

Show veteran bags award

By Casey Neill Hampton Park man John Follett has been a Dandenong Show fixture for more than 60 years.

His service to the Dandenong Agricultural and Pastoral Society event and other local shows earned him a meritorious service award at the Victorian Agricultural Shows’ annual convention which was held in Shepparton on 1 and 2 July.

“John has a wonderful community ethic and dedication, always ready to assist where he can,” the convention heard when John received the honour.

“He is probably called on more than his fair share because of his willingness and pleasant manner.

“He also has a wealth of knowledge regarding shows that is invaluable.”

John, 74, said the honour rated a close second to the 60 years’ service award that Dandy Show legend Jack Rae presented him at last year’s show AGM. “Jack knows me longer than I have known Jack,” he said.

Jack knew John’s dad, Alf, who was a Dandenong Show life member.

“My grandparents were originally breeding Clydesdale horses where Moorabbin aerodrome is now,” John said.

“My grandfather was a trustee of the Heatherton Recreational Reserve in Ross Street, Heatherton.

“The Heatherton carnival and bazaar; my father was president of for a number of years.”

From there Alf joined the Dandenong Show in the early 1950s.

“At that stage he was a market gardener at Noble Park,” John said.

“Then Dad branched out into cattle, and we had 70 acres at Nar Nar Goon North.

“We sold that and bought this property (in Clyde North).

“We’ve gradually increased the size of it over the years to having two adjoining proper-

ties with the 320 acres.”

He has about 160 cattle on the farm, mainly for meat but also for breeding. He has about 12 head on his 10 acres at Hampton Park.

John automatically followed his dad into show life, “which was a custom of families back in those times”.

He joined the Dandenong Show committee in 1971, was president in 1981, 2002 and 2003, and served on various sub-committees.

John’s been a safety committee member since 2000, security chairman for more than 20 years and the grounds committee chairman since 2015.

John was awarded life membership at Dandenong in 1992.

He received the same honour from the Berwick Agricultural and Horticultural Society in 2007.

He’s been a Berwick member since the 1980s, joined the committee in 1992 and is the occupational health and safety chairman.

He attends meetings with the Greater Dandenong and Casey councils to elicit ongoing support for the Dandy and Berwick shows.

John has volunteered on the Pakenham Show gates for many years, and now helps with the broadcast van for public announcements.

He’s enjoyed “the friendships that you make, and the appreciation of the effort that you put in”.

“I visit other shows as an observer and help wherever I can,” he said.

“It’s my connection with the land, with agricultural aspects, and the mateships that you cultivate over the years with your involvement.

“I’ve got friends throughout Victoria and also interstate.”

John said he’d be involved with the shows indefinitely.

“Hopefully, they don’t have to wheel me in a wheelchair to see it, but I hope to continue my role as far as assisting with the show,” he said.

His film Behind Closed Doors - a pointed look at a teenager living in a domestic violence household - boasts many technical feats.

There’s slow-mo action, dramatic soundtrack, fast, silky editing and crisp lighting. Though there’s a roaming hand-held feel, it’s easy to forget it’s captured on a smartphone.

It’s Callum’s second entry in the annual SmartFone Flick Fest (SF3) an international film festival for films shot only on smartphones and tablets.

He says he learnt much from analysing the winners in last year’s comp.

“They were inspiring. It’s interesting how the winner actually filmed as if a person was walking around with a phone.

“It didn’t seem so put-on.”

As with many 14-year-olds, the Beaconhills College student is not

threatened by filming on a smartphone.

Basically, the device is always in his pocket, ready for filming on a second’s notice.

However, his mind is also on the quality of lighting, the sharpness of image.

He then used simple movie-editing software on his tablet to slow down the action and weave together the scenes shot on location around Berwick.

“It’s pretty user-friendly. You can pretty much learn it all in one sitting.”

His film’s topical, heavy subject matter was chosen because simply, domestic violence shouldn’t happen, he said.

“It’s thought that domestic violence just affects the parents but it also affects the people around them.

“It affects so many people. I think just getting the word out there might just help.”

Callum centred the film on a teenage girl, starkly showing her angst and isolation while her parents fight.

Students dance up storm The Australian Ballet’s Education Team has been giving Casey dance students a chance to learn from the best in the business during the school holidays.

Team members have been stepping and pirouetting their way around The Factory Rehearsal Centre for the Arts in Cranbourne.

Steamdance is The Australian Ballet’s education program which integrates science, technology, engineering, arts and maths within a ballet workshop and performance experience.

During the five-day program participants have been exploring the fundamentals of ballet to co-create their own dance work to perform at the end of the week.

Students will also have the opportunity to watch The Australian Ballet Education team perform a modern-meetstraditional production of The Sleeping Beauty.

The City of Casey was awarded funding in 2016 from Creative Victoria to bring the state’s esteemed arts companies to the region to collaborate with local schools.

State nod for Breana

By David Nagel If hard work and dedication are the hallmarks of success, then keep an eye out for Pakenham’s Breana Granger on the biggest basketball stages in the coming years.

The 11-year-old power forward has been selected to represent Victoria in the School Sport Australia Pacific Basketball Championships to be held in Adelaide in early December.

Breana, who attends Timbarra P-9 College in Berwick, is part of a 10-strong squad that will represent the state in the Girls 12 Years and Under competition.

“To be picked as one of the top10 players in Victoria was really surprising but very exciting,” said the dedicated Breana, who plays or trains basketball seven days a week.

Making the squad was no easy feat with a long selection process required to sort out the best basketballers from across the state. Breana’s elite skills and fitness saw her survive the first and second rounds of trials before the final step took its course.

“There were 80 of us left and we did drills, then played a game, did more drills then played again, and it kept going like that,” Breana said.

“It was just so exciting to hear my name called out.”

Breana started her journey as an eight-year-old in Hoop Time, a pro-

gram that offers children in Grades 3/4 (Junior) and Grades 5/6 (Senior) the opportunity to play in a fun interschool competition with qualified referees.

Breana progressed quickly and soon found herself in a representative squad with the Dandenong Rangers.

She currently plays for the Rangers Under 14s and can’t speak highly enough of the program.

“We train twice a week, on Tuesday and Sunday, and there’s lots of running involved, learning about defence, and learning how to run plays and set screens, that type of thing,” Breana said.

“But I like it all, the speed is really fast and there’s lots of running involved but I’m growing and developing as a player and I really enjoy that feeling.”

Breana is also part of the Basketball Victoria Country Junior program, and was last year selected for the annual BVC Jamboree in Echuca - a congregation of the best country basketballers in the state.

Combining Rangers and Regional commitments, along with private training sessions and two games a week, Breana spends all seven days on the court in some capacity.

Her parents, Phil and Leanne, make sure her basketball commitments are balanced out with a healthy

dose of homework.

So who are her heroes and what are her ambitions?

“I really like Penny Taylor, she’s a great player who played for Dandenong and went on to play for Australia at the Olympics,” Breana said.

“And one day I’d love to go to college in America and play basketball over there.”

Breana has special people that she would like to thank for helping her along her journey.

“Mum and dad have been really supportive, getting me to training and that type of thing, and Trevor Burnette (from ‘Team Energy’ at Hoops 24-7 in Dandenong) has really helped along the way,” Breana said.

Breana and the family also wanted to pay special tribute to Timbarra P-9 for their ongoing support.

“We could not ask for anything else from the school,” said Breana’s mum Leanne.

“We would like to thank Matt Tyndall (vice-principal) and Maura Conroy (office) for their continued support. It’s an absolutely amazing primary school that will always come up with an alternative to fit basketball and school together.”

Breana’s siblings, twin sister Katie, older sister Brooke, and brothers Reece and Jamie are also very proud of her achievement.

Five in a row for Stingrays as the points stack up

By Nick Creely An avalanche of goals late in the final term has seen the Dandenong Stingrays bank their fifth straight victory against Calder Cannons by 23-points on Saturday.

Down at RAMS Arena, the Cannons had all the running early with the wind, slamming on three goals in the first 10 minutes, before the sharpshooting Riley D’Arcy finally banked a goal to kick start the ‘Rays.

But a late goal to impressive forward Lachlan Scholl saw the Cannons take a 20-point quarter time lead.

A pair of Jamie Plumridge goals was the only thing of note in the second quarter, with the ‘Rays butchering their chances for goal, kicking eight behinds for the quarter to be trailing by a solitary point at half time.

Although they dominated most of the play in the second, it was full of wasted opportunities going inside the attacking arc.

And not even the break - and perhaps a change of boots - could turn things around in the third, with the ‘Rays once again not finding their range in front of goal, kicking 2.4 for

Sluggish start costs Casey

By Nick Creely It took Casey well over an hour to settle into Saturday’s clash with Richmond - but by then it was too late.

With heavy wind and rain setting in to Holm Park in Beaconsfield through the game, the Demons paid for their poor start, with Richmond running out 28-point winners in the end.

In a typical wet weather match of football reliant on gaining territory, the Dees were lacklustre as the Tigers bullied them in the stoppages and used their pace on the outside to create opportunities up forward.

It took until near the 20th minute for the first goal to be scored through Tigers’ forward Callum Moore, who ran into an open goal in front of a napping Casey defence.

Another goal on the quarter time siren to Corey Ellis saw the Tigers take an early and ominous 16-point lead.

As the rain got heavier, the Tigers’ intensity got fiercer, as the Demons struggled to halt the momentum.

Quick goals to Danko Bzenic (three goals) and Todd Elton (two goals) early in the second quarter saw the margin blow out to 29-points, before a piece of magic from Alyosio Ferreira - with a mid-air volley through the goal - finally gave the Demons their first major.

But it was short lived as the zippy Shai Bolton, Bzenic and Tom Silvestro piled on quick goals to hand the Demons a 40-point half time deficit.

Understandably disappointed, Casey coach Justin Plapp didn’t pull any punches in describing his side’s first half.

“We were terrible in the first half,” Plapp said.

“They (Richmond) were pretty good for four quarters, but we were pretty ordinary for a quarter and it cost us.”

Despite being dominated around the ground in the first half, Plapp was pleased with the side’s fight in the second half.

“We adjusted some things at halftime,” he said.

“We certainly got the game back on our terms.

“I’m disappointed, make no mistake about it, but I think with where our club is at the moment ... it was a respectable loss in the second half.”

The Demons fall out of the eight as a result and sit with a 6-6 record, and have the bye this week.

Saturday at Casey Fields saw Cranbourne as the student and Darebin as the teacher.

And in the Eagles’ 94-point loss to the premiership favourites, the 22 pupils learnt just what it takes to make it in the leading women’s competition in the country.

Matched up against AFL stars Daisy Pearce, Darcy Vescio, Katie Brennan and Mel Hickey, the Falcons flattened the Eagles, allowing them just one goal for the match while their side slammed on 14 themselves.

It took until the early parts of the final quarter for the Eagles to finally score a point, with the Falcons’ impenetrable defence counter-attacking with class when the ball rarely got down there.

“Darebin are a quality unit - they are by far the best side we’ve played, and are getting all their players back at the right time - they’re a professional outfit,” coach Sein Clearihan said.

“The girls learnt how professional the competition is and the discipline of how Darebin were with their structures and rotations.

Although the scoreboard looks unfavourable, Clearihan was proud of his side’s effort despite being obviously outclassed.

“We had 12 players out - that hurts when you take those girls out against top sides, but to the girls’ credit they battled hard,” he said.

“We took the ball in our scoring zone 13 times in the second quarter, but just couldn’t score and that hurts too, but that’s a learning curve for the group.”

The Eagles sit eighth with a 2-6 record and face Geelong on Sunday at Osborne Park.

Wickers all the way

By David Nagel Berwick defeated Narre Warren by 49 points on Saturday but two passages of play in particular sum up the difficulty of rolling the Wickers for this South East Football Netball League crown.

At the 15-minute mark of the first term, Narre Warren ruckman Trent Papworth had a shot for goal to give the Magpies the opening two majors of the match - the perfect start in their toughest assignment of the season.

An early goal to Dale Gawley had the Magpies up and about, and their ability to absorb Berwick’s pressure gave a real sense of optimism heading into the middle stages of the first term. Relentless pressure saw Papworth presented with a golden opportunity -albeit on his wrong foot - to apply some scoreboard pressure to the ladder leaders.

He missed and - just like a stalking Cheetah - the Wickers went BANG! A 65-metre kick-out from Ash Smith cleared an assembled pack, the ball falling into the hands of Lucas Jellyman-Turner, who fired off the handball to a surging Reece Piper, who gathered cleanly in the centre circle and took off, taking 10 steps before launching a bomb from the centre square that sailed straight over the goal-umpires head.

A scintillating 14 seconds of footy that had to be seen to be believed.

Narre Warren champion Nick Scanlon answered with a brilliant soccer-goal of his own ... before the Wickers struck again.

A contested ball on Narre Warren’s half-forward line spilled to Will Arthurson, who dished off to Trent Thomas, who handballed to Smith who spotted a one-on-one battle in front of the new electronic scoreboard at Edwin Flack Reserve.

The Magpies showed character to win the final term - but the damage had been well and truly done.

Goosey believes his team is still well-placed for a crack at back-toback titles after the Eagles ran away with a 97-point victory over Officer at Casey Fields.

It was a strong rebound after last week’s loss to Berwick.

“Berwick was too good for us on the day, but it’s all positive as far as I’m concerned, I’m a realist and you don’t win premierships in July,” Goosey said.

“Losing used to be the end of the world at Cranbourne, but now we understand that as long as we learn

from what we do, we can move forward and have the chance to redeem ourselves. Berwick holds no fears for me, the main aim for us has always been to finish top three and our focus has never wavered from that.”

Luke Bee-Hugo kicked six for the Eagles while Micky Boland continued hid fabulous season in the ruck.

Netball hits a drawn-out spell

By David Nagel It feels like a magic wand has been waived and a spell cast on the South East Football Netball League after Cranbourne and ROC fought out a thrilling draw at Casey Field on Saturday.

The teams couldn’t be split on 39 points each, the third time in as many weeks a draw has taken place in SEFNL. Berwick and Hampton Park started the enchanted run with the Wickers and Cranbourne continuing the magiccarpet ride a week later.

Cranbourne was lucky to escape with a draw against the Kangaroos who blew the Eagles away with an electrifying first term. With Courtney Linhart (goal shooter) and Gemma Stacey (goal attack) sharing the load up front, the Kangas scored 14-6 in their best quarter of netball for the season.

Ash Barnett (centre), Olivia Hamilton (wing attack) and Amy Jones (wing defence) were dominating the midcourt, while Laura Quinn (goal de-

fence) and Mel Overdyk (goal keeper) had a firm grip on things in defence.

The Eagles narrowed the margin over the next two quarters, but still trailed by four at the final change.

The home side needed someone to step up in the final term and some key personnel responded.

Tara Cecil (GK) and Jodie Holt (GD) did a magnificent job in defence, restricting the Kangaroos to just five goals in the last quarter, while Alanah Hardy (GA) was superb, scoring all nine of the Eagles goals.

In the end, the teams couldn’t be split!

Hampton Park’s season was in need of some urgent resuscitation and the Redbacks breathed new-life into their finals hopes with an upset 43-36 victory over Doveton.

This was the beginning of a massive fortnight for the sixth-placed Redbacks, who had to defeat both Doveton (fourth) and Cranbourne (fifth) to keep a finals berth within reach.

The Redbacks led from start to finish, leading by two, four and a solitary

goal at the first three breaks before firing up strongly in the final term.

Brooke Kiely (GK), Karli Foster (GD) and Chloe Birch (WA) all stood tall while Stephanie Hille (GS) had a massive impact, shooting 11 lastquarter goals. Liz Edwards, Shae Gee, Akanisi Seeto and Hayley Stewart were solid contributors for the Doves.

Tooradin, as expected, was simply too good all over the court for Pakenham, winning 72-26 at Toomuc Reserve.

Alex Maher (GA) was in fantastic touch for the Seagulls, shooting 15 goals herself in a stunning 19-5 opening salvo from the premiership favourites.

The Lions who trailed by 32 at half time, were far more competitive in the second half with Renae Joiner, Elayne Schneider and Carly Saunders doing a wonderful job through the midcourt.

And Narre Warren tuned up for its mouth-watering clash against Beaconsfield with a resounding 24-goal victory over Berwick at Edwin Flack Reserve.

Strong finish for Cavaliers

By Nick Creely BIG V BASKETBALL REVIEW ROUND 15 STATE CHAMPIONSHIP MEN The Casey Cavaliers have virtually secured fifth spot with three rounds to go after defeating McKinnon 74-67 on Sunday at Casey Indoor.

With only a couple of games left in the regular home and away season, the Cavs got the job done over the seventh placed Cougars, a team looking to keep it’s finals hopes alive.

The game was a defensive grind throughout, with the Cavs’ defence holding up firm in a tense last quarter that netted just 20 points between the two sides.

Raheem Lemons (25 points, 10 rebounds, five assists) led the Cavs to an important victory, while Brandon Polk (15 points) also played out a strong game.

The Cavs get to enjoy the weekend off now, before facing Corio Bay on 23 July at Casey Indoor.

DIVISION ONE WOMEN It was a truly disappointing performance for the Cavs against bottom-placed Westernport, going down 83-58 at Dromana on Sunday.

As a result, the Cavs are in a vulnerable position in second last, and could potentially finish the season as wooden spooners.

The Steelers actually trailed by four points at half time, before a stirring 26-17 third term saw them snatch the lead from the Cavs, before dominating 24-4 in the final term.

The Cavs had very little answers in the second half, with only Rebecca Borham (21 points, five rebounds) a bright spark.

Casey will make a trip out to face Latrobe City Energy on Sunday, as they look to avoid relegation next season.

YOUTH LEAGUE TWO MEN Casey appears certain for a top two finish after a mixed weekend of results for the Youth League team.

Saturday night saw them dismantle Chelsea Gulls 83-49 at Casey Indoor as expected, before going down surprisingly the next day to Westernport 79-67.

Against the Gulls, the Cavs controlled the game from the beginning, putting distance between their opponent on the scoreboard right from the outset.

Mitchell Gooiker had 15 points and nine rebounds and Hunter Marks had 11 points, 12 rebounds and five assists.

But that momentum couldn’t be carried through down at Dromana on Sunday, with the Steelers leading the contest right from the start and looking comfortably against the Cavs.

Every time the Cavs pushed hard and looked to be regaining control, the Steelers always had the answers.

Despite the loss, the Cavs remain in second but unlikely to topple top placed Pakenham Warriors with a round left to play.

The Cavs hit the road on Saturday night with a clash against Warrnambool Seahawks at the ARC Sports Stadium.

YOUTH LEAGUE TWO WOMEN It was just one of those games for the third placed Cavs, who went down surprisingly to Southern Peninsula 69-53 at home on Sunday.

The game belonged purely to the Sharks right from the very start, playing three strong quarters to control the contest even with the Cavs trying to fight their way back in.

An impressive 26-point third quarter couldn’t be reeled in during the last quarter, with the Sharks holding on despite Alyssa Weston (20 points) putting in her best efforts for the Cavs.

The Cavs have the perfect opportunity to bounce back on Sunday when they face the Westernport Steelers at Dromana.

Comets win keeps them in touch with leaders

STATE LEAGUE 1 - SOUTH EAST A brace to Casey Comets’ Dejan Radojicic has seen his side record a 2-0 victory over the struggling Morwell Pegasus at Comets Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Needing a win to stay in touch, the Comets got on the board in the opening minutes through Radojicic, who used poise to find the back of the net.

Radojicic again goaled right on the stroke of half time, to give his side a second goal.

No side was able to score in the second half despite the Comets having several opportunities.

The Comets are in eighth spot with five wins, three draws and six losses.

No other games were played over the weekend.

STATE LEAGUE 2 - SOUTH EAST

City took early control and went close to scoring through Orlando Mejias who shot wide, and despite dominating possession and having numerous attempts at goal went in to the break all square.

The second half was a repeat of the first, with Berwick peppering

away and North Caulfield’s keeper having a day out and pulling off several outstanding saves.

It looked like it was going to be a nil all draw for the second week in row for City but with time running out the goal finally came when Andy Jerez found himself in space and with just the keeper to beat calmly slotted the ball in for the only goal of the game.

“We had quite a few early chances and really should have put

the game out of their reach,” Berwick coach Gerry McDonagh said post-match.

“The longer the game went, the more pressure we put on ourselves to score and it got quite tense in the coach’s box towards the end, but the boys once again found a way to get over the line.”

The 1-0 win now moves Berwick into second spot on the ladder, just one point behind local rivals Doveton.

City are back at home this Saturday against Old Scotch.

STATE LEAGUE 5 - SOUTH There was more fight than usual for Drouin on Saturday afternoon, with the Dragons making Pakenham United work for their 1-0 victory.

After coping a hiding from Sandown 13-1 last week, the Dragons put in a much improved performance against a good side in Pakenham.

Liam McCafferty was the goal scorer for United in his first for the season.

In other matches, Sandown defeated Old Mentonians 3-1 and White Star Dandenong lost 0-5 to Lyndale at Greaves Reserve.

Gavin Lang steers Tell Me Tales to victory to notch up career win 6000.

Major milestone for Gavin Lang Warragul-born reinsman Gavin Lang completed the remarkable milestone of driving 6000 winners in his career after piloting Tell Me Tales to victory at Tabcorp Park Melton on Saturday night.

Lang steered the Emma Stewart-trained pacer to a stirring win in the Group 1 $120,000 Vicbred Super Series Final for two-yearold fillies.

It is the latest milestone in a celebrated career for the master horseman, born at West Gippsland Hospital

in 1958.

Fittingly, he collected race win 5000 on his “home track” at Warragul just under five years ago.

Lang still competes regularly at Warragul meetings, and no doubt will be in the sulky at the upcoming local race meet on Sunday, 23 July.

Gippsland pacer Professor Tom ran a strong race for second in the fouryear-old entires and geldings division of the Super Series on Saturday night.
