Keeping kids busy

By Peter Douglas With very few schools in the Yarra Ranges region operating vacation care during school holidays, Mount Evelyn Primary School has set about helping local families.

After beginning in 2014, the school’s vacation care has been a “lifesaver” for many families in the region, with the non-profit model - in which the funds go back into supporting the service - striking a chord with the surrounding communities.

Out of School Home Care (OSHC) co-ordinator Melissa McDonald said numbers are booming with more than 250 families regularly using the 80plus placement service.

Ms McDonald said the result was not only good for families but for students as well.

“The parents have been positive, rapt to have somewhere local and easily accessible,” she said.

“People travel from all over the Yarra Ranges, with even a few coming from Croydon and Melton, given the quality of the program.

“We understand how difficult it can be for parents over the school holidays, particularly if they have a limited family network.

“The children are never bored; they don’t even realise they’re learning while having fun. We use the My Time, Our Place framework and it’s been great.”

The service has access to 15 carers, many of whom are studying teaching.

“We have an excellent team, all staff are qualified teachers or are studying teaching,” she said.

“I make the program fun... it’s a vacation atmosphere.

“Most of this growth has come from word of mouth. We’ve even had a child from Melton who stays with relatives in the area just to enjoy the program.

“Some bring along cousins or friends, if they’re staying for the school holidays.”

Snap up mystery history

By Peter Douglas A Monbulk couple is hoping to find the rightful owners of photographs taken in Silvan more than 80 years ago.

After the chance discovery of an old film canister in the 1980s, underneath a thenvacant house in Haynes Street, Silvan, Ian and Margaret Ross became curious and had the film developed by their niece.

What they discovered were around 30 incredible black ‘n’ white images of a Silvan-based family, who are believed to have lived in the area in the 1930s.

The images tell the story of a close-knit family who loved their pets and the good company of friends, and - judging by their attire - could be thought of as rather stylish.

A friend of Mr Ross’ had told him he believed the photos featured a Mr and Mrs A.V. Strong and their daughter, Una. Although, Mr Ross is unsure of the exact identity of A.V. Strong.

Now, given the age of the images, Mr Ross is embarking on a final bid to reunite the images with descendants or friends of those featured in the photographs.

“I have no use for the photographs, but I would love to see them reunited with someone who may really care for them,” he said.

“Someone may recognise the people in the photographs and family members may still be in the area.

“They must mean something to someone.

“I’m really into history, and I am intrigued by the photographs.”

Ian and Margaret Ross, who now reside in a retirement village in Monbulk, first moved to Silvan in 1955 and have never left the district.

Interestingly, they owned a general store in Silvan, with the building featuring in the background of one of the images.

The building is no longer there, though.

Mr Ross hoped the photographs may be of sentimental value to someone in the community.

“They’re incredible images and it must have been a good camera,” he said.

“And for the canister to sit under the house for 30 years before they were discovered is amazing.

Descendants of those in the pictures may still be in the Yarra Ranges area.

The fashion of the era is in true 1930s style.

One of these men is believed to be A.V Strong, though it's not known which one.

“They were just children playing in the area who discovered the canister.”

Mr Ross said if anyone would like to inspect the photographs further, they could contact him on 9756 6477.

The quality of the images is outstanding.

‘Mr Owl’ and ‘Mrs Owl’ may be about to become ‘Mumma’ and ‘Pappa’ Owl in the coming weeks, according to local Powerful Owl watchers of the Mount Evelyn Recreation Reserve.

Resident watcher Clare Worsnop believes the actions of the pair suggest there are eggs inside the hollow they have called home over the past few months.

Ms Worsnop said ‘Mr Owl’ had been busy doing the hunting in the cooler months and coming back with his ‘possum pie’, while ‘Mrs Owl’ had been in the hollow and presumably tending to

the eggs, which were likely to hatch in the coming weeks.

Ms Worsnop, who has been watching the local owl population for over 32 years, said watchers were hoping to see two little miracles in the warmer months.

“If they do hatch, we probably won’t see them until spring,” she said.

“The way the (older) owls are behaving would suggest we may see some young soon.”

Ms Worsnop said there were no guarantees for the offspring, though.

“There are two eggs, though it’s unusual for both to survive beyond the first 12 months,” she said.

“It’s usually one owl who goes on to find a territory and survive.”

Ms Worsnop said once the young owls lose their ‘baby trill’, their parents shoo them out of the nest and they are forced to find their own territory.

This is because the male owl does not want another rival in their territory.

The Powerful Owl is listed as endangered, with disappearing landscape in urban environments widely thought to be the cause.

Ms Worsnop said it was fine to observe the Powerful Owls in their natural habitat, but encouraged minimal human interference.

An important time of year for the local Powerful Owl population.

A bicycle and a car collided on Sunday morning, 9 June, at Belgrave roundabout.

The cyclist was travelling north through the roundabout towards Belgrave Gembrook Road, and the vehicle travelling south towards Burwood highway.

Police report that the cyclist was halfway around the roundabout when he impacted on the rear driver’s side panel and was thrown from his bike, and it is believed that the vehicle failed to give way.

Ambulance services attended the scene, and the cyclist was taken to The Royal Melbourne Hospital.

A woman has died and two others have been taken to hospital with serious injuries following a two-car collision in Cockatoo on 9 July.

Police report the collision between a yellow Ferrari and Ford Falcon sedan occurred at the intersection of Avon and Woori Yallock roads about 1.05pm.

A 33-year-old Point Cook mum who was passenger in the 2005 model Ferrari died at the scene and the driver, a 45-yearold male was taken to Dandenong Hospital.

A local couple from Cockatoo in the Ford Falcon, who were travelling west along Avon Road, had to be airlifted to hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries following the collision.

Detectives from the Major Collision Unit believe the Ferrari took a bend while travelling east on Avon Road moments before colliding with the Ford sedan which was travelling in the opposite direction.

The marked speed for the road is 70km/h.

It is reported that prior to the incident, a group of exotic cars passed through Emerald, driving towards Avonsleigh, one of which was a yellow Ferrari.

Melba hosts ‘reassuring’ NDIS information forums

By Effie Caloutas Local disability provider Melba Support Services is hosting two information forums on Saturday 15 July at 2.30pm and Thursday 20 July at 7pm.

The information will be held at the Lilydale United Church and on Anderson and George streets, Lilydale.

The forums are aimed at ensuring people with disability and their families have all the information they need to commence the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

NDIS is the new way of providing support for Australians with disability, their families and their carers.

Melba chief executive officer Glenn Foard believes the forums will be beneficial to families entering the NDIS. “We have run information sessions previously, and we’ve provided advice to people individually,” he said.

“Those who have attended our information sessions in the past have found them helpful and reassuring.”

Yarra Ranges plan makes a sustainable statement

A dial-a-bus service and streamlined, bi-directional routes may revolutionise public transport within the Yarra Ranges.

After months of planning, hills-based group DirectLinx has unveiled its proposed bus network plan, which will next month be presented to Deputy Premier James Merlino and Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan.

The plan includes 19 stops in total, with five planned for the Yarra Valley and 14 in the Dandenong Ranges.

The plan comprises a mix of 14 stops that are directly connected to the network, with a further five offering a lesser ‘pass-through’ service.

The proposed routes are bidirectional, meaning a streamlined service that allows users to better dictate their own movements, rather than the other way around.

DirectLinx, along with Yarra Ranges Shire councillor Mike Clarke, flagged a new bus network in late 2015, citing frustrations with the present service.

While only the route has been released, the group is also known to be pushing a shift towards a solar or electric bus service.

Cr Clarke said the present service was inefficient, under-utilised and not cost effective for taxpayers.

In a DirectLinx video released to promote their work, Cr Clarke spoke about the perceived issues.

“The problem with the buses in the Dandenong Ranges is they are going on ... routes which don’t help people to get to where they want to go,” he said.

“As a consequence, the buses are largely empty, or have one or two people on them, and they are costing the taxpayer.

“My idea is to run smaller buses, minibuses of 15-20 people that run point-to-point between two centres.”

A Localised Planning Statement (LPS) for Yarra Ranges now rests with the minister for planning after being adopted by Yarra Ranges Council in June.

The LPS has had a long and at times rocky road through council, with the wording around a ‘sustainable forest industry’ and inclusion of a History of the Regional Strategy Plan two areas of contention.

The purpose of the LPS is to provide planning policy to support the protection of the unique features of Yarra Ranges region and as a guide for any proposed change to the planning scheme.

The Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges is one of four key tourism areas identified as of unique value to Victoria, deemed by the State Government to require special treatment.

The key policies are to contain urban development, conserve rural land for agriculture and other nonurban uses and to protect biodiversity and significant landscapes.

A Community Reference Group formed in 2015 to produce the document covered aspects as diverse as environment and heritage to community safety, economic development and utilities.

Don Valley member of the CRG, Rick Houlihan, spoke in support of the motion to adopt the LPS at the meeting in Warburton on 27 June.

Speaking as an individual member of the group, but not on behalf of the group, he said lengthy discussions had taken place on the 44 submissions received.

“What we’re seeing here is the culmination of a thorough process, a great deal of engagement with the broader community, the Community Reference Group who have provided valuable input, and other stakeholders.

Cr Mike Clarke opposed the motion saying it was an important document and that council should get it right.

“There’s an opportunity to improve the wording slightly ... (there are) important matters that were left out,” he said.

Cr Tim Heenan said he had issues with the statement’s take on forest policies.

Referencing the statement, he said “Ensure forested areas are managed to be compatible with the protection of water resources - not happening; forest value - not happening; landscape and long-term protection of biodiversity - not happening.

Cr Stevenson pointed out that the Regional Strategy Plan has the capacity to deal with forest policy.

“The Local Planning Statement needs to be consistent with the Regional Strategy Plan; they need to work hand in glove with each other,” he said.

“This document has had a thorough working over; not everybody got everything they wanted, but the intent of what most people is reflected in this document.”

Councillors Stevenson, Cox, Child, McAllister, Higgins and Avery voted in favour, with councillors Clarke, Heenan and Cliff against.

The document will go to the State Planning Minister, Richard Wynne, for approval.

Hair-raising challenge set

By Peter Douglas Gembrook mother of two Tracey Turco will next month embark on a gruelling Kokoda Track challenge, in a bid to raise awareness of alopecia areata.

The medical condition is life-changing for those affected, with an estimated 500,000 Australians battling the challenges of dramatic hair loss in the scalp and around the body.

Tracey, 43, has been living with alopecia for over nine years and agrees it can be difficult.

Her journey began when she was aged 33, when her husband noticed a bald patch at the back of her head.

Within a matter of weeks, all her hair had fallen out, including her eyelashes and eyebrows.

“It was a huge shock and I was extremely scared. In the beginning, it was really difficult to come to terms with it,” she said.

“Everyone has a part of themselves that they like best; well, mine was my hair.

“To lose it was utterly devastating. It made me, and still

makes me, feel less feminine.”

Tracey said alopecia was not just about hair loss, but about a loss of identity.

“You literally become a different person - how you see yourself, how others treat you and how you cope with things, sometimes, literally, overnight,” she said.

Tracey wears a wig in public most of the time and said she was slowly coming to terms with living with alopecia, but still shed a tear occasionally.

“Although most people react pretty well to my alopecia, I can sense their pity. Unfortunately, there still is a real lack of understanding,” she said.

Tracey is undertaking the Kokoda challenge, which will see her hiking through 95kms of rugged mountains, rainforests and jungles.

Her aim is to raise essential funds for the Australia Alopecia Areata Foundation (AAAF) and improve the lives of those living with the condition.

WAKING up to rain on the roof wasn’t a frequent occurrence throughout June.

Although the cold has started to bite throughout the Yarra Ranges, you’re forgiven if you’ve been left wanting to see the wet stuff falling from above.

According to the latest Bureau of Meteorology statistics, the Yarra Ranges experienced one of the driest June months in the past decade.

Just 30.4mm fell in the Yarra Valley, as recorded from the Coldstream weather station, which is less than half the median average rainfall for the region, presently at 67.2mm.

To put this in perspective, the recorded rainfall is lower than in the peak drought years during and before Black Saturday, with 49.6mm (2009), 41.4mm (2008) and 59.8 (2007) recorded.

Although just 22mm fell in 2006; which is a far cry from the high of 100.6mm recorded in 1998.

Meanwhile, the news was much the same in the Dandenong Ranges, with the Ferny Creek station recording only a slightly better 53.2mm for June.

Though this is well below the median for the area of 122.3mm, suggesting the Dan-

denong Ranges fared worse overall in terms of the expected average.

Weather forecasts are predicting a change in fortunes, with rain forecast for the remainder of the week.

Art’s connected to nature

By Derek Schlennstedt To coincide with the change in seasons, Belgrave illustrator and watercolour artist, Susie Parry is unveiling her new exhibition that reflects the cycles of plant life and human life.

Her passion for beauty, the intricacies of natures and the vibrancy of colour and how light falls on objects have led her to the intimate connections between humans and nature which feature in her exhibition.

Her solo exhibition, called One Step at a Time features at Burrinja Gallery and showcases flowers and objects she has found in her backyard and in the Dandenong Ranges.

“I go to Grants picnic ground three to four times a week - the staff there know me now,” Susie laughs.

The exhibition includes over a year’s work of detailed illustrations which represent growth in nature and in life through the use of plants.

Susie portrays this growth with works of leaves, flowers and shoes which she said symbolised human growth.

“While I was walking I looked down once and saw my foot among a really nice composition of leaves and that’s what started it,” she said, “What makes us is our genetic and parents' DNA and our surroundings, which will determine who we are and the shoe is the only piece of clothing that shows our growth.”

“The shoes represent our growth and the paths we take.”

Double-up in the top spot

By Cameron Hutchison The weekend saw the last game in Round 11 for Division 1 being played and Round 12 for Division 2.

The Under 18s had a weekend off and more shuffling of the ladders occurred because of the weekend’s results.

After 11 Rounds in Division 1, Olinda and Wandin share top spot with Healesville just two points behind in third, Woori Yallock in fourth and Upwey 10 points behind in fifth.

Second Division has seen some big moves with Seville and Belgrave fighting it out for top spot this week, Powelltown is clear by one win in third, Yarra Glen finds itself in fourth and only one game ahead of fifth-placed Alexandra.

The Under 18s are playing for positions in the top eight, while Emerald and Mt Evelyn look like they have a stronghold on positions one and two.

Wandin sits third with Healesville in fourth, while Upwey is clear in fifth and Warburton, Woori Yallock and Gembrook make up the rest of the eight.

Division 1 Netball: Olinda is comfortably sitting on top with Wandin six points behind in second place. Woori Yallock is hot on their heels in third, with Monbulk and Warburton sharing fourth spot.

Belgrave is still undefeated on top in Division 2 with Yarra Glen in second spot. Yarra Junction is just behind in third with Powelltown and Yea making up the five.

Division 1 Seniors Football Olinda Ferny Creek 11.9.75 d Upwey Tecoma 4.19.43 Olinda still sits on top of the ladder after their win on Saturday while Upwey are in fifth position only one game clear of the sixth-placed Mt Evelyn.

Olinda got away to a good start kicking 4.3 and keeping Upwey to only four behinds. Upwey fought back in the second quarter kicking 4.3 to 2.2, meaning that the margin was only 10 points at half-time.

The second half was all Olinda’s as it kicked 5.4 to Upwey’s 13 behinds.

Dan Waters ended up with 3.7 for the day and things would have been completely different if accuracy was the name of the game.

Thornton could only manage one behind in the third quarter to Kinglake’s 2.3, extending the lead to 40 points, and the game was sealed. To

Thornton’s credit it outscored Kinglake in the last and reduced the final margin to 36 points.

Yea could not maintain its pressure in the last and let Powelltown skip away with a four goal to one quarter and the win by 14 points.

It was an even second quarter with Seville outscoring Yarra Glen, kicking 4.4 to 4.1, the margin was only eight points. At this point it was anybody’s game.

Yarra Glen was caught napping in the third term and could not get the ball into their forward 50.

Seville piled on 6.2 to a solitary behind and the momentum was all in Seville’s favour as they went into the three-quarter time break with a 32-point lead.

Yarra Glen got a couple of early goals in the last quarter but Seville replied and ended up kicking 5.5 to 3.1 to come away with one of their best wins this season.

Alexandra got the jump in the first term shooting 10 goals to 6 and took a slim lead going into the second quarter.

Yarra Junction outscored Alexandra in the second term by five goals and held a slim lead of one goal at half time.

The Eagles got their game into full swing in the third term and dominated shooting 16 goals to two and had the game in their keeping.

It was tight in the last but Alexandra could not claw back the deficit and went down by 17 goals in the end.

Kinglake hit its straps in the third quarter shooting 16 goals to 4 and they now had a winning lead at three-quarter time. Kinglake produced another very solid last quarter with 18 goals to three, and keep in touch with the top five.

Yea 38 d Powelltown 34 Yea has pulled off a closely fought win over Powelltown and sits fifth, only two points behind fourth placed Powelltown.

The first quarter was a tight battle with Yea shooting 10 goals to eight.

Yea got the jump on Powelltown in the second term, shooting 10 goals to four and went into half-time with an eight-goal lead.

Powelltown rallied in the third quarter and held Yea to 10 goals while it shot nine, but the lead was now nine goals.

Powelltown had not given up and played out of their skins in the last shooting 13 goals to eight but the charge was too late at the end going down by four goals.

Relay teams hit the road

By Jamie Strudley YARRA RANGES ATHLETICS YARRA Ranges Athletics Club joined other athletics clubs and Little Athletics clubs from around Victoria at Sandown Park for the Victorian Road Relay Championships.

This is one of the few opportunities for our club to compete as a whole with Athletics Victoria and Little Athletics Victoria holding championship events at the same time and same venue.

A lot of fun was had by all athletes and supporters on the windy - sometimes wet - motor racing circuit.

The best result of the day was from the Women’s Under 14s team of Indi Linde, Mia Strudley

and Maddie Laven who finished a close second in the 3 x 3.1k relay.
