■ Empty nest population fall set to continue for the next 20 years…

Shrinking suburb By Casey Neill Endeavour Hills is bucking the trend and shedding residents, and a turnaround is two decades away. The 2016 census revealed the suburb’s population was sitting at 24,294 - down more than 1500 people from the 2001 population survey. The City of Casey added 47,000 people between 2011 and 2016. Endeavour Hills lost 280. Demographer Glenn Capuano from .id said Endeavour Hills was reaching the end of its first suburb life cycle.

OPEN MORNING

“The City of Casey is a major growth area, but Endeavour Hills is one of the older parts of it,” he said. “It was mostly built pretty much around the same time. “Most of the houses there are of the same age.” He said it had a “spaghetti” street design and blocks weren’t standard sizes. The houses are large, he said, and generally not old enough to warrant being knocked down yet. “There’s a bit of a monoculture, in terms of the housing the and therefore the types of households that are there,” Mr Capuano said.

The 2016 census data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics confirms this, with 89.1 per cent of private dwellings listed as houses, 10.8 per cent townhouses or similar homes, and none listed as apartments. More than 93 per cent had three or more bedrooms. Mr Capuano said people who bought in Endeavour Hills raised a family there, and their children were now moving out. “You get decline in population when they leave home and you get the empty nesters staying behind,” he said.

“Endeavour Hills is almost the text book example. “It’s not an area that’s going to change very rapidly because those empty nesters are likely to stay at home for quite a while before they downsize. “Our population forecasts for the area still have a marginal decline over the next 20 years.” At that point, Mr Capuano said, home owners would be dying or moving into care. “Then you free up those family homes,” he said. “You get the up-trend as those families move back in.” Continued to page 3

Youth voices push for reform on homeless

In Brief Paperwork for police Dandenong police are working side-by-side with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youths through a new traineeship program. Industry and Employment Minister Wade Noonan and Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams visited the station to meet trainees and police involved in the Skillinvest program. Through funding from the State Government’s $63 million Jobs Victoria initiative, Skillinvest placed three school-based trainees at Dandenong police station and 29 others at stations around Victoria. The trainees are involved in filing, paperwork and inventory checks as part of completing a Certificate III in Business Administration. Aboriginal Affairs Minister Natalie Hutchins said: “The benefit of employment to the Aboriginal community goes beyond having a job - it gives them the ability to give back to the community and become future leaders.“

By Maggy Liu Six high school students from Gleneagles Secondary College are advocating on behalf of the homeless at this year’s YMCA Youth Parliament of Victoria. After dedicating months of their spare time to researching, writing and perfecting a bill to give government-owned addresses to the homeless, they finally had the opportunity to debate its merits in Parliament House during the week of 3 July. Gleneagles team member Christina Jayasedan explained that they chose this particular issue to focus on because it was topical and required longoverdue action. “We saw on the local news that they were kicking homeless people off the streets and one of our classmates’ mum works at Centrelink, and she told us about how you couldn’t get the benefit without an address and we thought that’s just ridiculous.” This is why their bill detailed a system for the homeless to access personal letterboxes at local council buildings and libraries so it was easier for them to apply for jobs, benefits and receive other correspondence. Clarissa Cornelius acknowledged that their bill was only a small fight in a much larger battle to empower vulnerable citizens in Victoria, but emphasised the importance of collecting these smaller victories to form the foundation for larger social progression. “At the end of the day, it is just a single step,” she said. “It’s obviously not going to take out homeless in its entirety but we need to take a step at a time since there’s no way you can eliminate such a huge issue in a single process.” After several rounds of heated debate in the chamber, the bill was passed in a conscious vote to the delight of the team, who all had positive reflections on their experience. Noora Chatrary said one highlight for her was “meeting like-minded young people and bonding with them”. Clarissa thought the most important takeaway for her was the importance of “spreading your

’Gansters’ in firebomb attack “Gangsters” threw three Molotov cocktails at a Keysborough home following an early-morning clash with the resident. The victim, 34, told police that three men in ski masks were casing the College Crescent house about 4am on Sunday 25 June. He told police that they walked up his driveway and “indicated they were gangsters”. A confrontation allegedly occurred, during which the victim damaged the vehicle the trio arrived in. More people then arrived at the address on motorcycles, the victim told police. About 7.15am, the victim alleged, the men returned and threw three ignited Molotov cocktails at the front of the house. He rushed out and extinguished the fires, which left scorch marks on the house. Information to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Christina Jayasedan perhaps benefitted from the program the most, believing her involvement had “definitely confirmed her aspirations to go into global studies and major in international politics at university”. After Youth Parliament ended, all successful bills were to be handed to Youth Affairs Minister Jenny Mikakos. Over the past 31 years of Youth Parliament, a

handful of bills that have gone on to shape official legalisation including buying the morning after pill at the counter and roadside drug testing for drivers. Only time will tell if government-owned addresses for the homeless will also become a reality. - Maggy Liu was part of the YMCA Youth Press Gallery covering the Youth Parliament.

Shrinking suburb Y-managed centre bags award From front page The 2016 census found 7.9 per cent of Endeavour Hills residents were aged between 55 and 59 years, compared to 6.2 per cent across Australia. The 60 to 64 age bracket was also more highly represented in Endeavour Hills, at 7 per cent compared to 5.6 per cent Australia-wide. In November 2013, the Journal marked 40 years since the first land sales in Endeavour Hills with a look back at the suburb’s history. Peggy Clark moved to the area in November 1972, when there were roughly six other houses and farm land almost as far as the eye could see. It was marketed as “premier land” and its undulating landscape and large blocks were a major attraction.

Endeavour Hills Leisure Centre took home a state award for excellence. The YMCA-managed facility took home the inaugural Business Excellence Award from the annual Aquatic and Recreation Victoria (ARV) industry awards, held at The Peninsula in Docklands on Friday 16 June. Centre manager Susie Nogic told the crowd it was “a victory for loyalty and the long and strong partnership between the Y and the City of Casey Council”. “The Y has been in partnership with City of Casey for over 20 years and our collaboration has resulted in a happier, healthier and more active community,” she said. “We have just had our management contract extended, and will be aiming even higher over the next 10 years.”

Shotgun shatters car window A shotgun fired at a car shattered its window in a Noble Park driveway. Police said the victim was inside the Balotta Crescent home with his wife and son and heard a loud bang about 8.05pm on Sunday 2 July. He went outside to find a broken rear window and damaged tyre on his Holden Frontera SUV. Police said they believed the shooter used a shotgun with buckshot and fired from the road and that they did not know what the motive was.

Banks cards, cash stolen

Endeavour Hills Leisure Centre's Tarryn, Glenn, Monica, Hilary, Susie, Taylah, Scott, Lyndal and Wade.

Four men robbed a Noble Park man as he walked down David Street, Dandenong. Police said the 43-year-old was between Ross Street and Caroll Avenue about 10.45pm on Sunday 2 July when the group approached and demanded a cigarette. When he said he didn’t have any, they allegedly grabbed his bag from his shoulder and rummaged through it before dumping it on the ground. One of the men took the victim’s wallet from his pocket. They fled towards Princes Highway with the victim’s bank cards and a small amount of cash. The victim was not injured in the incident. He described the men as African in appearance and said they were dressed in dark clothing with hoods and baseball caps.

A Hallam mulch and soil yard accused of emitting dust into neighbouring businesses may be fined due to a late and non-compliant report to the Environmental Protection Authority. Folino Plant Hire, which runs Supreme Organic Soils on O’Grady Road, had missed the 31 May deadline to submit a site layout plan as part of an EPA pollution abatement notice (PAN). When the plan was received three days late, it did “not comply with the requirement” of the PAN, an EPA spokeswoman said. The EPA is now considering whether to fine Folino at least $7500 for non-compliance. Both Folino and a neighbouring mulch yard owned by Bark King Group have been given until 31 August to increase their dust control measures and not impact on their neighbours. Unlike Folino, Bark King had submitted its required site layout plan to the EPA by 31 May. If the companies fail to comply with the order, they face fines of up to $770,300. According to the notices, excessive rates of dust deposits from the yards had coated a neighbouring industrial workplace. The highest reading of dust in nearby Bolt Court was 9.42 grams per square metre per month in January - more than double the four-gram standard in NSW. “Numerous potential sources of dust are present on your premises and likely to be a source of dust emissions,” the notices stated to Bark King Group and Folino Plant Hire. The EPA has confirmed that O’Grady Road, which is unsealed and Casey council-managed, was not the “primary contributor” of the dust. When asked about Folino’s compliance, company director Frank Folino recently told Star News: “That’s between me and the EPA.”

Reverend Ineke Gyles comforts Mick Morland's daughter Rebecca Sanders at the service. 170056 Picture: GARY SISSONS

There were laughs - with hardly a dry eye - in a 1000-strong farewell to Casey’s popular, largerthan-life mayor Mick Morland, OAM. Mr Morland, 67, who was tragically killed while crossing Princes Highway, Berwick, had a mission to make everybody happy, his wife Kay told the service at Berwick Church of Christ on 5 July. He was a husband, father, grandfather and uncle who devoted himself to his family. But Mr Morland’s family extended not just to genetics and blood - it extended to the diverse crowd in the church. “This room is full to the brim with Mick’s family,” she said. The renowned story-teller loved people, regardless of gender, race or ability. Given half the chance, he would be your best friend, she said. “His mission was to bring laughter and joy to all he met. “The world would be a far better place if there were more Mick Morlands.” Ms Morland urged the gathering to keep talking about her late husband. “It keeps him alive in our hearts.” Others noted his legacy of feats as a councillor, Liberal Party member, Rotarian, football clubman

and his family’s hero. He was above all a loving example to all, Reverend Ineke Giles said. She recounted Mr Morland’s message to a Narre Warren North Christmas service last year. He said that Christmas was about love. “It’s about telling your partner, children, grandchildren and your friends that you love them.” Gary Morland - draped in a Richmond Football Club scarf - told of how his older brother and he grew up in a family of eight children in Richmond. The household extended to 12 at times after they moved to a cement-sheeting house in then semi-rural Springvale. He and Mr Morland sometimes had to sleep head-to-toe. Mr Morland was a senior prefect at school and an accomplished runner, golfer, footballer, cricketer and squash player, brother Gary said. Above all, Mr Morland was a “leader of men” who had that rare quality - he could “walk with kings” but not lose the common touch. “I always thought Mick had kind eyes and that led to a kind and compassionate heart.” Youngest brother Tom invoked the words of inspirational MND campaigner Neale Daniher, who said: “It’s not what you say but what you do.” At the end, Mr Morland’s coffin draped with a Tigers scarf was carried out to the rousing anthem of his beloved Richmond Football Club.

Looking Back

Compiled by Dandenong and District Historical Society

100 years ago 12 July 1917 To the editor Re: Letter boxes Sir, these are no doubt a great timesaver to the letter carriers but not a great comfort to house holders as the entrance gate is in many cases a good distance from the house and letters may be lying in the box for considerable time as one cannot go down to inspect them every day. May I suggest that the letter carriers carry a whistle and blow it when leaving letters. This would be a great comfort to the general public and not a source of trouble or expense.

50 years ago 11 July 1967 Three-hour frenzy More than 700

teenagers

screamed,

squirmed or merely sat their way through a frantic three-hour pop music programme in Dandenong on Friday night while they awaited the arrival of their idol Normie Rowe. The show was staged in Menzies Hall, North Dandenong, to raise funds for the Dandenong and District Hospital. Denise Drysdale also appeared on the show. The show was organised by the YCW and is planning other functions.

20 years ago 14 July 1997 Migrants shocked at apathy The organisers of the multicultural celebration could have done more to win over the crowd which protested outside the Town Hall on Monday night, according to the co-coordinator of the Springvale Indochinese Mutual Assistance Association (SICMAA), Mr Phuong Nguyen.

Mr Nguyen said there had been no communication between the protest groups outside the Town Hall and the council leading up to Monday night. Mr Nguyen said the feedback he had received from the Indochinese community after Monday night was one of shock and disappointment. He said many people went there to protest against what Pauline Hanson was saying and they felt that the council could have made its own protest more clear.

5 years ago 9 July 2012 Cabbies ride the racial slurs Racism seems to be an unfortunate part of the job for Dandenong taxi drivers. At a recent taxi industry inquiry, the City of Greater Dandenong made a submission that Dandenong Taxi drivers - mainly from India, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan - were

subject to violence and racist comments. Ahmad, a Pakistan-born taxi driver told the Weekly he tried to ignore outrageous racial slurs. “If they call you a bad name like nigger or Abo I just don’t talk to them,” he said. “I use to get upset but I decided I can’t keep getting upset if I want to do the job. “But 90 per cent of the public is great to work with.” The first and only time he came under physical threat was at Dandenong Railway Station. As he sat in his cab, a group of young Pacific Islander men brandishing rods and broken bottles smashed his taxi’s side window, GPS and dispatch system. He said he was fortunate to escape injury but another cabbie in the rank was stabbed in the back.

John’s prime citizenship in store What’s In a Name delves into the fascinating stories and personalities behind some of the city’s bestknown street names and locations. This week the Journal looks at Abbott Street, which runs off Pickett Street in Dandenong, thanks to Dandenong and District Historical Society president Chris Keys. A storekeeper, councillor and leading citizen. The title fits easily on the shoulders of the late John Abbott, a prominent Dandenong personality. Much of his life - some 40 years - was spent in Dandenong, to which he contributed his undoubted talents generously. At the age of 26 he established a profitable storekeeping business in Dandenong, later opening branches at Mirboo North, Archies Creek, Dalyson Wonthaggi and Mentone under the business name Abbott and Mason. In 1897 he married Ellen Ada Griffiths, who

He and his bride went into residence at Mr Abbotts’ store, which was on the east side of Lonsdale Street - the same side Abbott Street can be found on today. After a brief period on an orchard property in Heatherton Road, they moved back into town and lived on the corner of Walker and McCrae streets - where Dandenong Plaza is today - while their new home Thrimby was being built at 6 Mason Street, where Halpin Way stands. He took an active interest in local affairs and

John Abbott made an impressive contribution. his sound knowledge of finance and business acumen made him an asset on any committee. A prominent member of the Patriotic Committee during World War I, he was also a member

of the local hospital committee as well as being a Dandenong councillor and Water Trust Commissioner. While a councillor he was the prime mover in the installation of electricity in the town. He was a justice of the peace, a member of the Dandenong Bowling Club, and an ardent supporter of the St James Church of England. He was a church warden for 25 years and the Superintendent of the Sunday school there. When he died in his 71st year, on December 8 1938, he was survived by his wife, two sons and two daughters. Abbott Street was named in recognition of the impressive contribution he made to the community life of Dandenong and district. Welcome to Springvale RSL ENTERTAINMENT 14-JUL-2017 RICK CHARLES 15-JUL-2017 BRENDAN SCOTT

A Springvale police officer is attracting online attention with his skateboard skills. Senior Constable Ilott was captured on video rolling through the Ross Reserve Skate

Park in Noble Park. Victoria Police shared the footage on its Facebook page with the hashtags #sk8erboi #copsonwheels and has racked up about 78,000 views and 3000 likes. The Journal tried to catch up with the senior constable but he was on night duty last week. Greater Dandenong residents can provide eight meals to people doing it tough through a $2 donation. Until 8 August the Coles supermarkets in the area will collect funds for SecondBite, which redistributes surplus fresh food to people in need.

Drive to succeed More than 200 new cars drove out of the Patterson Cheney Toyota yard in June, a record breaking month for the Dandenong dealership. The sales team delivered 207 new cars to customers and the used car team sold another 60 vehicles. The finance team wrote $3.8 million in loans. Corolla, Hilux and Camrys were the most popular models with new car customers. “It was our biggest June ever,” new vehicle sales manager Joel Dabrera said. Mr Dabrera said the end of financial year sale was an unqualified success for Toyota Australia. “And we played a massive part in that achievement,” Mr Dabrera said. He thanked the Greater Dandenong community for its support and said the record-breaking month had produced a “massive” flow-on effect throughout the Patterson Cheney group. “The support we got from servicing and parts was terrific. We couldn’t have got there without those guys. The effort was right across the business.” It’s a sentiment echoed by CEO Cameron Cameron Bertalli. “I’m so proud of our entire team in reaching this goal, we are a proud business that really enjoys our community so a big thank you for all of your support,” Mr Bertalli said. “We truly value our employees’ contribution,

Absence of violence is ‘a matter for comment’ By Cam Lucadou-Wells Family violence is so common in family law disputes that its absence is now a “matter for comment”, according to a family law judge. “I can say with confidence that family violence is the core business,” Judge Judy Small told a gathering to celebrate a pilot program to house family violence services at Dandenong family law court registry. “It’s a matter for comment when there’s no family violence alleged.” Her observations showed the need for the federal program Family Advocacy and Support Services (FASS) - which allows victims and perpetrators to be literally walked from the court into the offices of social workers. The key goal is to keep families and children safe. The survivors of family violence - mainly women and children - are assisted in a complex knot of problems. Duty lawyers help with the legal issues, social workers assist with safety plans and finding alternative accommodation for victims. The perpetrators are guided into men's behavioural change and parenting programs, perhaps on a path to regaining access to their kids. Judge Small said FASS was a welcome initiative, to have social scientists and lawyers working together. There had been much progress, but family violence was still not widely understood, she said.

Jackie Galloway, Nicole Rich, Belinda Blair, Judy Small, Gayathri Paramasivam and Mark O'Callaghan at the FASS event. 170000 Picture: CAM LUCADOU-WELLS There was the misguided notion that a man could be an abusive partner but a good dad, for example. Children who witness this abuse could suffer lifelong consequences, Judge Small said. “The fact that it happens in the home is the real affront to me. “It happens in a place where we should feel safest on this earth, where we feel safest, sup-

ported and loved. “The betrayal of trust when family violence occurs ... it’s extremely difficult to rebuild.” FASS teams duty lawyers from Victoria Legal Aid and Peninsula Community Legal Centre with social workers from WAYSS and Relationships Australia. The pilot, which started on 1 May, runs for about two years.

Housing unfit for human habitation Refugee families are living with mice and mold, too scared of eviction to speak out. Dandenong non-profit Women’s Health in the South East (WHISE) drew attention to the issue during Refugee Week. WHISE works closely with newly arrived and refugee women to help them access mainstream services, including finding suitable rental accommodation. “My clients live mostly in private rentals and often have to move house,” settlement services officer Marian Salvage said. “One of my tasks is to help them find new accommodation. “These women are great tenants they are fastidious, they don’t drink or smoke or play loud music, or have pets.” Ms Salvage said she regularly attended open for inspections with clients. “I have come across rot and mould on walls due to excessive moisture; leaking taps, which create a huge problem with the of rising costs of water; clients with young children having to go without hot water for two weeks despite numerous calls; and mice and cockroach infestations, just to name a few,” she said. “The situation we have at the moment is that landlords appear to have more power when it comes to the rental market. “We need to ensure that landlords take responsibility for the properties they rent out.” The State Government is reviewing the Residential Tenancies Act (RTA) and WHISE urged people to stand up and have their voice heard. Ms Salvage said having a clean and safe place to live was getting harder, but making money off the poor and vulnerable during this housing boom was not acceptable. “This is happening in our own backyard, and we just can’t stand by and ignore it,” she said. Visit www.makerentingfair.org/petition-RTA to get involved.

Contact centre jobs call By Casey Neill Patterson Cheney has created 15 new jobs in Dandenong. The Dandenong Street contact centre should grow to 30 employees in the next 12 months. Intellicall directors Robert Zima and Jesse Green started working on the call hub in February. They were due to switch over the first lines by Friday 7 July, and will stick around until the end of the year to finish the move. “They’ve really welcomed us as part of the family,” Mr Zima said. “They’re one of the more progressive automotive companies.” Mr Green said the centre was the most advanced of any he’d been to. “It’s a one-stop shop. We handle all types of calls,” he said. “We’re not an answer and transfer service. “We actually take the call and we manage it from beginning to end. “The guys have had almost four weeks of training.” Contact centre manager Michella Vornovaty and her team are now taking “inbound calls for our service and sales departments for both Toyota and Isuzu trucks and utes”. The other dealerships - Honda, Holden, Mercedes-Benz, RaceSport, Man, Western Star Trucks and Dennis Eagle - will come on board in coming months. Previously, reception at each dealership fielded these calls. Ms Vornovaty said this system would provide more consistency. “I guess we really want to set ourselves apart

Intellicall director Robert Zima, Patterson Cheney managing director Cameron Bertalli, Intellicall director Jesse Green, contact centre manager Michella Vornovaty and Patterson Cheney CFO James Tsorlinis. from other dealerships and stand out,” she said. She said all staff members lived locally, with some able to walk to work and many ditching long train and car journeys. Patterson Cheney started when Mr SA Cheney became an assembler of US vehicles in 1915. Bill Patterson bought into the business in 1972 and it’s been known as Patterson Cheney ever since. The Bertalli family now owns the company, which is one of Australia’s largest car and truck

dealer groups and employs about 650 people. That’s set to grow with the new Waverley Mercedes Benz. The company’s Dandenong operations were originally in Lonsdale Street and a truck dealership was just behind the post office. These combined in 1983 on the current Cheltenham Road site. Mr Zima urged people to visit www.pattersoncheney.com.au/careers for new contact centre positions.

Keysborough and Springvale residents have a new way to dispose of their old plastic plant pots. The Bunnings stores in both suburbs are part of a new trial recycling program. The pots aren’t able to be recycled through kerbside programs because of contamination issues with cleaning and sorting processes. So Bunnings Keysborough and Springvale are encouraging residents to bring in their plastic pots - no matter how old, dirty or broken - and drop them in a designated cage. Polymer Processes will pick up and recycle the pots, and Garden City Plastics will turn them into new pots for use by greenlife growers. A Garden City Plastics spokesperson said recycling plastic used less energy than producing it from raw materials.

WE LOVE IT

NOBLE PARK FOR SALE - DROUIN

They say that location is the key to buying good real estate. If the location won’t have would-be buyers nodding with approval then the land size and potential certainly will! Sitting on approximately 596sqm of prime land, this property has the potential for easy renovation or for being knocked down and a dream home built. This home comes with three generously sized bedrooms, expansive living area, central bathroom and plenty of space at the rear for the kids and pets to run around. Versatile properties situated in premium positions do not come along every day but if the location doesn’t tick all the boxes, then the future potential certainly will!

27 JOURNAL NEWS Monday, 10 July, 2017

SPORT Women players grow in stature By Nick Creely There have been many heart-warming and substantial breakthroughs in Australian sport over the past decade but none quite like a certain phenomenon which is growing in stature every single day - women’s football. The stunningly successful AFL Women’s competition in 2017, partnered with elite pathways such as VFL Women’s and TAC Cup Girls, has seen participation rates for playing Australian Rules football skyrocket. According to data released by the AFL, female football teams rose by 56 per cent in 2016 to 983 around the country and are expected to rise when the participation figures are released later this year. In Victoria, a 41 per cent rise since 2015 has seen 9354 females take up football with a total of 380,041 females participating in football around Australia - a 21 per cent growth on the previous year. As a result, females now make up 27 per cent of total female participation. Girls now have a legitimate pathway to elite level sport that has been so sorely lacking - they can idolise and use inspiration from superstar players such as Daisy Pearce, Erin Phillips and Tayla Harris and, more importantly, dare to dream about a future in the game. Over the past few years, the AFL has seen clubs appoint female assistant coaches, the first female to umpire an AFL match and also a club appoint a female for the first time as CEO. A total of 2500 female accredited coaches are also in operation - times are truly changing. More locally, the Southern Football League, the South East League and the Eastern Football League have introduced women’s competitions

Georgia Bevan of the Crows handballs during the AFL Women's Grand Final between the Brisbane Lions and the Adelaide Crows on 25 March, 2017. Picture: AFL MEDIA and they are raging successes only destined to build over time. These competitions are otherwise known as ‘female football factories’ with some of the best talent coming out of these regions.

There are currently 24 official women’s football leagues around the country - including the AFLW - but more incredibly there are leagues in operation in Canada, Fiji, Ireland, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Tonga, the USA and the UK.

County gets on a carnival ride of disappointment By Nick Creely VIC COUNTRY UNDER 18 CHAMPIONSHIPS Vic Country ended its Under-18 campaign with a 1-3 record after a bitterly disappointing 46-point loss to South Australia last Wednesday afternoon. As a result, Country narrowly avoided finishing last in division one only on percentage, with the Allies taking out the wooden spoon. Down at Simonds Stadium, the home of the Geelong Cats in the AFL - Country had five Dandenong Stingrays youngsters pull on the jumper. But in an indifferent start - that became the theme of a disappointing carnival - Country found itself 12-points down at quarter time after an inaccurate opening term. From the opening bounce, the South Australians were far too slick and hard around the contest, often being exposed for pace once the ball found its way to the outside. A dominant six-goal second quarter to SA saw Country 38-points adrift, a deficit unable to be reeled in despite some fight in the last half. Stingrays Hunter Clark (two goals) and Luke Davies-Uniacke (16 disposals, 1 goal) finished their respective carnivals in positive fashion, with the latter a high chance to be taken with the coveted number one draft pick later this year. Fellow Stingray trio Bailey Williams, Tom De Koning and Oscar Clavarino all finished their carnivals with commendable performances, with Clavarino, in particular, enhancing his rating as the leading key defender in this year’s draft. Country’s rivals - Vic Metro - took out the Division One title for the second year running, but lost their first game of the carnival earlier in the day to bottom placed side Allies. Attention will now turn back to TAC Cup football for the Stingrays’ group who are looking to win their first premiership in the competition. In the south-east of Melbourne specifically, Rowville has introduced two junior girls’ teams the Under 10s and Under 12s, who are embarking on an exciting journey together. The girls are all first-year footballers, learning the game as they go and making lifelong friends as they develop together. Rowville Hawks Club President Paul Mynott said that the rise of girls’ football at his club has changed the culture and vibe around the place. “Introducing two girls’ teams season this season, U10 and U12, has been a breath of fresh air for everyone involved at the Rowville Hawks Football Club,” he said. “It has dramatically changed the culture of our club in a positive way and enabled our boys and girls to mix on a more regular basis from a training and social perspective, which is what real community sport is all about. “Having girls’ teams at the club also provides us with a whole new sponsorship market, which is vital in keeping local footy clubs running and thriving to their optimum level - without sponsors, local footy clubs wouldn’t survive. “To see 40 young girls with a glimpse of stardom in their eyes and their proud parents that have supported their daughters to play a sport that for 150 years has been dominated by males is something that I thought I would never see and am extremely proud of. “The fact that these girls now also have a genuine pathway they can aspire to and play at the absolute highest level just like the boys is brilliant and as a club we’re personally looking forward to also introducing more girls’ teams in the future. “I applaud any club that is prepared to work hard and introduce female teams in their club as this will not only benefit themselves in the longterm but also their wider community.”

Squad for Gold Coast named The AFL Victoria Vic Country squad for the continuation of the NAB AFL Women’s U18 Championships on the Gold Coast from 10 July has been finalised. After Country’s 27-point win over Metro in Round 1 of the Championships at Simonds Stadium, the squad has been reduced from 35 to 24, plus emergencies, for the remaining three games. Vic Country - led by Diamond Creek Swisse Wellness VFL Women’s senior coach and Carlton AFL W assistant Scott Gowans - is best represented by TAC Cup Girls runners up Murray Bushrangers and Dandenong Stingrays with six players named in squad, followed by Geelong Falcons with four, Greater Western Victoria Rebels and Gippsland Power with three and Bendigo Pioneers with two. Country will be captained by Gippsland Power star Darcy Guttridge who is a chance to be taken with the number one pick in the AFLW draft later this year. Bridie Kennedy, a Stingray from the Dromana Football Club, started the carnival off in stunning fashion and will be a player to watch throughout the week. The six Dandenong Stingray girls named in the final squad are: Georgia Gee, 17, 157cm Forward Ruby Clayton, 17, 162cm Wing/Forward Bridie Kennedy, 17, 172cm Ruck Jordyn Allen, 17, 173cm Defender Brooke Struylaart, 17, 164cm Forward Courtney Jones, 16, 164cm Forward Sophie Phillips (emergency), 17, 163cm Midfielder Fixture: Monday 10 July 10am Queensland v Vic Country, Bond University. Wednesday, 12 July 11.40am Vic Country v NSW/ACT, Broadbeach Football Club. Friday, 14 July 11.40am Vic Country v Western Australia, Broadbeach Football Club.

Burra brave but Demons surge steals the spotlight By Nick Creely JOURNAL FOOTBALL REVIEW SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 2 - ROUND 13 It’s quite possible that Saturday saw witness to the likely 2017 grand final, with Keysborough and Chelsea Heights doing battle in an absorbing contest at Beazley Reserve. With everything on the line, the sides couldn’t be split at quarter time with both sides locked on 2.2(14). But the Demons got the break in the second quarter, kicking five goals to three to take an eight-point half time advantage. With dominant Demons’ forward Phil Smith (six goals) running amok in the third, the Burras suddenly found themselves staring down the barrel of a tough defeat, and needing four unanswered goals in the last to win the match. And despite strong efforts from Burras star Chris Bryan (three goals), Geoff Humphreys (two goals) and Ryan Goodes, couldn’t quite get there, falling by 13-points. The final scoreline read 14.8(92) to 11.13(79) in what was one of the season’s most anticipated matches. Springvale Districts 11.9(75), meanwhile, kept its winning run alive, defeating Highett 11.7(72) narrowly. DIVISION 3 - ROUND 12 The Doveton Eagles’ 16.13(109) stirring climb up the ladder continued when they disposed of South Yarra 7.8(50) with ease on Saturday. After a fairly even first term, the Eagles clicked into gear, piling on five unanswered second quarter goals to stride out to a 35-point half time lead. An improve third quarter from the Lions didn’t mean a great deal, with the Eagles clinical in the last to bank another percentage boosting victory. Corrie Wilson’s (four goals) super season continued with another best afield performance, while David Lever was equally impressive, snagging two goals. Hallam’s 26.13(169) extraordinary season continued in Saturday evening’s clash with Lyndhurst 4.6(30), with the Hawks sitting atop with an astonishing percentage of 309.74. In a fairly tame opening term, the Hawks kicked just 2.4 to open up a nine-point quarter time buffer, before slamming on 10.2 in the second to climb out to an ominous 64-point half time advantage. The Hawks then played scary football - befitting of premiership favorites - to blow the Lightning away in a 14 goal last half. There were 11 different goal scores for the Hawks, with Matt Neve, Justin Marriott, Andrew Daly and Brandon Nolan all snagging four goals apiece. In other matches across the round, Dandenong 4.2(26) stood no chance against Ashwood 14.19(103), Sandown 8.5(53) were highly competitive against Lyndale 15.14(104), Endeavour Hills 25.17(167) walloped Carrum Patterson Lakes 9.4(58) and Black Rock 14.13(97) defeated

Hallam were far too good for Lyndhurst on Saturday night.170320 Moorabbin 10.4(64). EASTERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 1 - ROUND 12 In one of the toughest away trips in the EFL, Noble Park 10.16(76) fell just short of Blackburn 13.15(93) in a ripping contest at Morton Park. Two top-four contenders did battle and, in an intense opening quarter, the Cougars narrowly held a two-point lead after an inaccurate 1.5 opening term. With star player Kyle Martin in vintage form in game 150 through the midfield, the Bulls kept in touch only through the Cougars’ wayward goal kicking. An excellent four goal third quarter saw the Cougars blow out to a 24-point three quarter time

Picture: ROB CAREW

lead, a vital margin that couldn’t be headed despite the desperate fight of the Bulls. James Gwilt (three goals) was one of the best for the Bulls, Sam Monaghan was excellent in game 100 and Tim Kelly was a solid contributor. The Bulls have the chance to respond when they face Rowville on Saturday at Seebeck Oval. Rowville 8.4(52) were smashed by Vermont 17.16(118), with the Hawks’ tough season continuing. After leading at quarter time by five-points, the Hawks were smashed from pillar to post, kicking just four goals after quarter time and the Eagles piling on 14 themselves.

Stingrays fire up those Cannons By Nick Creely TAC CUP REVIEW - ROUND 12 An avalanche of goals late in the final term has seen the Dandenong Stingrays bank their fifth straight victory against Calder Cannons by 23-points on Saturday. Down at RAMS Arena, the Cannons had all the running early with the wind, slamming on three goals in the first 10 minutes, before the sharpshooting Riley D’Arcy finally banked a goal to kick start the ‘Rays. But a late goal to impressive forward Lachlan Scholl saw the Cannons take a 20-point quarter time lead. A pair of Jamie Plumridge goals were the only thing of note in the second quarter, with the ‘Rays butchering their chances for goal, kicking eight behinds for the quarter to be trailing by a solitary point at half time. Although they dominated most of the play in the second, it was full of wasted opportunities going inside the attacking arc. And not even the break - and perhaps a change of boots - could turn things around in the third, with the ‘Rays once again not finding their range in front of goal, kicking 2.4 for the third quarter while the Cannons piled on 4.2 to lead by 11-points. With a spark needed, Alex Young finally found the goals early in the fourth, igniting three majors in the space of nine-minutes - with two to Lachie McDonnell in quick succession- to completely run away with the contest. Solid midfielder Will Hamill was a constant presence around the ground winning plenty of the football to be named best, Lachlan Young’s impressive month continued with another polished display, while defender Riley Bowman was a rock, especially early when the Cannons peppered the goals. Thunder and lightning - very, very frightening indeed By Nick Creely NPL2 - EAST REVIEW - ROUND 22 A rampant Dandenong Thunder continues to close the gap on Dandenong City after a brilliant 5-1 triumph over Werribee City on Saturday night. As a result of the victory, Thunder close to within three points of displacing City at the top of the table as the season truly starts to ramp up its intensity. It all started in the 29th minute on Saturday, with Korcari heading home an excellent corner from Brandon Barnes to take an early advantage. It took just moments for the Thunder to get back on the board, with Adam Centofani finishing off some great work from Korcari to find the back of the net. At half time the Thunder were 2-0 ahead and not looking like slowing down against a side barely hanging by a thread. Despite City fighting back briefly with some

near moments to begin the second half, Samuel Catherine kicked a goal in the 65th minute, hitting the back left corner with precision and class to give the Thunder a 3-0 lead. Another two goals - one from Korcari and another from Kristian Sarkies - saw the Thunder pile on more pain to the visitors, who eventually got themselves a consolation prize from a free kick late in match. Even with star striker Brandon Barnes unable to find the goals, the Thunder looked potent and merciless in attack. The Thunder host Murray United on Saturday night, with the perfect opportunity to continue their charge to the top. City, meanwhile, have drawn 0-0 with Brunswick City in a frustrating day for the top side. Looking to break clear as the top placed side, City travelled to one of the tougher places in Victoria to play - up against an impenetrable Brunswick defence. In a slow moving game, Brunswick were able to get the games on their terms early, shutting

out City’s potent attack with slow and precise ball movement. With some near chances, City almost goaled on several occasions but were unable to find the back of the net. And in an even second half, no side could break away and goal, resulting in a vital draw that means City’s top spot is under threat for virtually the first time this season. It was, however, a milestone game for City skipper Shaun Filipovic, who was celebrating his 100th senior match. Filipovic has been an absolute star for the City this season, and will undoubtedly be the most important player later in the season. The City faces Nunawading City at Mahoneys Reserve next Sunday, with the game looming as one of the most important of the season.

New president’s got the power By Nick Creely

Jay Stent - the newly appointed president of the Eagles. 170272 there anymore or are too old that want to play more locally. “We’d welcome that and it’s a bridge we’re trying to build.” Stent pointed out that the committee down at Sydney Pargeter Reserve is focused, sure of what it wants, and desperate to deliver a clear plan revolving around a more balanced coaching group.

“We’ve got a great committee and are clear about where we want to head, it’s just about putting the pieces together into place,” he said. “One of our ambitions is to lessen the load of our head coach - with a club our size - the pressure on what is a part-time position is too much and we’re trying to develop a structure to lessen the pressure.

Brilliance shows through despite turn of events Fanta Bale will be chasing her seventh group title in next Thursday’s group 2 McKenna Memorial final at Sandown Park. It’s often discussed how difficult it is to win from wide draws over the middle distance, but it’s not difficult enough to halt the brilliance of Fanta Bale. She jumped well from box 8 in heat 2 and settled eight lengths behind early leader Zipping Hawk. As they turned for home Zipping Hawk’s break was quickly grinded down as Fanta Bale stormed by to win by 3/4 of a length in 34.45. “She’s a quality greyhound. The box draw was probably against her, being out there in box 8 on a bend start is never easy. “She was forced to do a bit of work to find a position on the rail then still had a bit of ground to make up,” said Rob Britton kennel representative Peter Riley post-race last Thursday. If Fanta Bale is to win in next week’s $58,000 final it would take her prize money tally to a staggering $844,690.

Fanta Bale after last Thursday night's victory. “There’s quicker middle distance dogs around but you won’t see many try as hard as she does. She’s not a track record breaker, just a very profes-

sional race dog.” The fastest heat win came from Bella Shima for Brooke and Jamie Ennis who set a scorching 34.07 - six lengths quicker than Fanta Bale. Bella Shima began fairly before she swooped around the outside to take the lead. Dundee Osprey was in hot pursuit throughout but there was too much work to be done, Bella Shima romped in by 8 1/4 lengths. Cheese Ya Later took out the opening heat at odds of $20 for husband and wife team Darren and Simone Fisher - Shima Song was a close second cementing her spot in the final. Midnight Elsa and She’s Got Grace also gained a berth in the final being the two fastest thirds. The $40,000 to-the-winner McKenna Memorial has always brought together an exceptional field and this year is no exception. Thursday night will also be highlighted by the second week of the club’s popular Dollars for Dinner promotion.

“We’re looking at a couple of our older players to come in and provide specific skills coaching for our kids and senior players, and just taking that pressure off the one person.” The Eagles are expected to sit down with current captain/coach Brad Baptist when he returns from overseas shortly, and will likely announce some new signings in the coming months.

The Endeavour Hills Cricket Club is starved of success, having spent the last two seasons anchored to the bottom of the East/West ladder. In arguably the strongest local competition going around - Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association - the Eagles have notched up just four 1st XI wins in two years. But times are changing and the club is moving forward under the guidance of newly elected president, Jay Stent. The 58-year-old club legend has a clear plan in getting the club - from its juniors to its seniors back to being a powerhouse off and on field. “It’s only been two or three weeks since I’ve been president, and the club over the last 12 months has put together a three-year plan that’s pretty detailed and covers a lot of areas,” he said. “I’m linking all of that, we’re trying to create a really strong culture and to strengthen our links to the local community. “We’ve got a very diverse community - we want to provide a level of cricket for a range of different skills and abilities - we want to strengthen that aspect of our club.” On-field, the Eagles are graced by a number of talented youngsters, and Stent said that developing the kids is the main priority for the club. “It’s about creating coaching structures that are targeted towards our younger cricketers. “It can be challenging at times playing sub-district cricket because you can be travelling all the way out to Melton, Werribee and Hoppers Crossing, so that’s challenging building our quality of cricketers,” he said. “We see the development of our younger cricketers at the moment - our focus is on our kids and bringing out kids through the system, and getting our kids into our top sides and if they’re good enough, then Premier Cricket with Dandenong, Casey or even Monash - that’s the ultimate aim. “We would love to receive back from Premier Cricket too - players that maybe don’t want to play

The SUV/Coupe crossover genre that MercedesBenz GLC occupies is an interesting piece of design evolution which combines the functionality of an SUV with the looks of a coupe and it joins competitors such as the Range Rover Evoque, BMW X4, Jaguar F-Pace and, with its AMG 43 version, Porsche Macan. Viewed in profile, and at the rear, it’s easy to see the distinction between the two GLC models. Not so at the front where they share the same big, bold grille highlighted by the large Mercedes ‘three-pointed-star’ badge. There’s a bulkier bumper at the rear of the coupe above twin chrome exhaust tips. The differing profiles lead to the GLC coupe being longer (by 76 mm) but lower (by 40 mm) than the GLC wagon as well as being 152 kg lighter. All variants get daytime running lights and roll on 20-inch AMG multi-spoke alloy wheels. Coupes are not renowned for their interior space but the GLC crossover version is a genuine four-seater. There’s good space in the two front seats with a nice balance of support and comfort. Rear seat passengers get the same shoulder, elbow and legroom as they would in the GLC wagon but, not unexpectedly, less headroom. It can still cope with three adults in the rear although, given the transmission tunnel, two plus a child in the middle would be preferable on long distance trips. Black-ash open pore wood trim is standard and surrounds a beautifully crafted interior layout. Luggage capacity with all rear seatbacks in place is an impressive 500 litres (just 50 litres less than the wagon) expanding to 1400 litres, a more
