A taxi company’s plans to carve a slice of the Geelong market have sparked a cab war in the city.

Geelong operator Peter Valentine slammed the rival company’s claim that it would increase the city’s taxi services.

“I don’t think it will be better service,” he said.

Last week 13CABS promoted its “im-

minent” Geelong expansion promising to boost the number of taxis.

But rather than increasing services, the company was attempting to “poach” his drivers, Mr Valentine said.

“Our taxi drivers have reported people at ranks handing leaflets to them.

“If that’s what you’re doing - that’s not expanding the fleet is it? That’s taking them from one cab and putting them in another.”

I’m ready to serve again, says ‘sacked’ councillor Another member of Geelong’s sacked council will seek re-election in October.

Eddy Kontelj announced his stand to the Geelong Indy this week, defying opposition to members of the former council returning to City Hall.

Mr Kontelj said he would run for one of three councillor positions in Brownbill Ward, covering central Geelong and suburbs from Newcomb to Newtown and Henre Hill.

“I am an extremely active and driven individual who is invested in Geelong,” he said.

Mr Kontelj, managing director of Caterpillar dealer William Adams, citied his six-year stint on the previous two councils along with his world records for static cycling and two months working in Antarctica around the end of 2016.

“If elected it is this type of commitment, energy, drive and courage that I intend to bring to the council.”

Other members of the former council to have declared they will stand for re-election are Tony Ansett, John Irvine, Peter Murrihy and Ron Nelson.

Kylie Fisher and the mayor of the sacked council, Darryn Lyons, remain the only two of the 13 councillors to publicly rule out standing again.

The government sacked the 13 councillors, including Mr Lyons, in April last year, citing an alleged culture of bullying.

The Indy reported in January that a year-long investigation had confirmed four bullying inci-

dents at City Hall over the past 20 years, leading to the departure of “several” staff.

Three government-appointed administrators - two from Melbourne - have acted as Geelong’s councillors for the past year.

The former councillors face opposition to any bids for re-election, with Victorian upper house MP Simon Ramsay wanting a new-look council in October.

“My hope is that we will get a good field of fresh faces to stand for seats on the new council; candidates who have at heart the best interests of the community they want to represent rather than the self-interest that in the past had plagued our council for many years,” Mr Ramsay said last month.

Candidates will stand in a restructured council, with councillor numbers reduced to 11, including a mayor, and wards cut from 12 to four.

The Andrews Government has also axed Geelong’s public vote for mayor, handing the decision back to councillors.

The councillors will choose a mayor and deputy to serve the first two years of the four-year term before deciding again at the term’s halfway point.

“We’ve already lost five (drivers) over the last 12 months. If those cars were a united service it would be a much better system.”

Mr Valentine was concerned that the company could expand into Geelong before the Victorian Parliament passed the Commercial Passenger Vehicle Industry Bill.

The bill would be the biggest shake up of the Victoria’s taxi laws in decades and sought to adapt the industry to the arrival of Uber.

The lower house was scheduled to redebate the bill in August after the upper house amended it in the last sitting of parliament.

“I have no problem with competition,” Mr Valentine said. “I do have a problem with competition when there’s not a set of rules.”

The Geelong Taxi Network chief operating officer pointed out reports in December 2016 of 13CABS operating ‘private hire’ taxis to compete with Uber.

13CABS confirmed to The Age that private hire cars were operating in the Mornington Peninsula to avoid paying taxi licences and registration fees.

“They’re quite likely to do the same thing in Geelong,” Mr Valentine said.

“You see some of the worst taxi cabs because the government’s dropped the rules.”

But 13CABS general manager David Samuel said the expansion meant the “wait is over for Geelong taxi users”.

Mr Samuel said Geelong’s growing population required a larger taxi service.

“In a growing region like Geelong it’s no surprise there’s huge demand for taxi services.

“That’s why we’re committed to getting more drivers and taxis on the road to help get people to their destination.”

Geelong Library will close from 17 July to 11 August for a series of upgrade works.

The library’s foyer, doorway and retail space would undergo substantial changes to provide “a much improved visitor experience upon completion”, said the gallery’s director, Jason Smith.

Shannon upgrade A busy strip of Shannon Ave in Geelong West will undergo $900,000 in safety upgrades after 39 accidents over the past five years, according to a local MP. The works between Brittania and William streets would include five new crossing points for a “safer place to walk and ride” Geelong MP Christine Couzens said.

Usually regarded as a particularly mild-mannered chap, Michael’s taken off the gloves to give some of the city’s biggest lobbying groups a whack in the coffers over their dependence on the public purse.

State Government and Geelong’s council should turn off the tap on Committee for Geelong and G21, he says, reckoning that governmental “corporate sponsorship” fails the pub test.

For a wealthy undertaker who would generally be regarded as someone from the big end of town, his policy, or strategy, would seem a sure-fire way of losing friends in high places.

A rather fashionablelooking alleged thief (pictured) could vie for title ‘Geelong’s Most Wanted’ after police posted her image on Facebook this week.

There she was, all blonde tresses and swinging handbag as she casually sashayed past an in-store surveillance camera at the scene of the alleged crime in East Geelong (Facebook/Eyewatch) last month.

“Police wish to speak with the female ... as she will be able to assist in the investigation,” the Facebook post added, seeking tip-offs from the public.

New SE airport ‘a waste of money’

By Luke Voogt A proposal for Victoria’s third airport in Melbourne’s south-east “would be a huge waste of money”, according to Avalon Airport chief Justin Giddings.

Mr Giddings dismissed the private proposal as no threat to Avalon Airport.

“It’s an incredibly optimistic proposition and one that I’m not taking too seriously,” he said. “I just can’t imagine the government would (support) that.”

Paragon Premier Investment Fund this week announced a letter of intent from an unnamed financier to build an airport about 75km

south-east of Melbourne’s CBD. The organisation will present the $7 billion private proposal to the State and Federal governments next week.

Paragon managing director Alande Mustafa Safi said the airport would be finished by 2020 and would be at least as big as Tullamarine.

But Mr Giddings said the airport would be small and have only a few flights.

“They’re looking to make more than $350 million a year just to pay the interest - that’s more than Tullamarine Airport makes.”

“But eventually, 20 or 30 years away, (the government) might want to have another airport.

So there’s nothing wrong with setting aside land.”

It made more sense to support Avalon, which was doing better than other “second airports” in Australia, he said.

“We’re very close to ports and the proposed Bay West Port. We’ve got great access into Melbourne, Geelong and western Victoria.”

Mr Giddings called on the State Government to build a regional rail link to Avalon.

“It will still be a few hundred million dollars but it will be nothing compared with the billions they’re looking to spend in Tullamarine.”

State and Federal Governments have proposed rail links to Tullamarine Airport for the past 60 years, with recently-proposed projects costed at more than $1 billion.

But Mr Giddings said the Geelong line had the capacity for a regional link, whereas metro lines could not link to Tullamarine without major upgrades.

A stop on the Geelong line “40 minutes” from Melbourne would make Avalon much more attractive to international passengers, he said.

Tourism Minister John Eren said the State Government would continue to back Avalon Airport.

Avalon Airport still had capacity to take more flights but the government needed to plan ahead for aviation as Victoria grew, he said.

Detectives probe death of woman

The mysterious death of a Waurn Ponds woman at Corio over the weekend has led to a police homicide investigation.

Police were called to an address in Matthews Rd about 10pm on Friday after reports that a woman had been assaulted.

Emergency services attended the address but could not revive the 44-year-old woman, who died at the scene.

Homicide squad detectives spoke with a number of people at the property, a police spokesperson said.

“At this stage, police believe this is likely to be a targeted incident.“ The spokesperson declined to provide any further information, and said police had yet to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the woman’s death.

Candidate takes on lobby groups

By Luke Voogt Council candidate Michael King has condemned government agencies funding local lobby group Committee for Geelong.

“I have always disagreed with government bodies being $25,000 a year Corporate Plus members of the committee,” he told the Indy.

Mr King, who will contest council elections as an independent, said standard membership of nearly $4000 a year “may pass the pub test” but not corporate sponsorship.

“I am not sure what (the agencies) get for their money and what (it achieves).”

Mr King named the TAC, National Disability Insurance Agency, Victorian Regional Channels Authority and Barwon Water, which he chaired for several years, as Corporate Plus members.

He said Geelong’s administrators had paid out $25,000 to re-join the lobby group in “the blink of an eye” while Barwon Water had recently upped its membership to the top level.

Mr King said when he was chairman at Barwon Water he cut the authority’s membership to the lowest level because “there was little value other than networking”.

“Throwing $25,000 of customers’ money at a self-appointed organisation was just not acceptable or justified. And the same applies today.”

The Committee for Geelong will also receive $800,000 in Victorian taxpayer dollars for its leadership programs over four years, which began in 2016.

The Committee for Geelong declined to respond to Mr King’s comments.

Mr King also called for Geelong’s new council

to slash funding to both the committee and municipal alliance G21.

He said the money should be used to save the three regional libraries under threat of closure.

“As council is operating under a rate cap, every dollar counts.

“Therefore, the new council should cut by 80 per cent the city’s overly generous contribution to G21 of nearly $500,000 a year, with all five-council members paying an equal share.

“This is a more equitable model than the existing lop-sided arrangement.”

Mr King said while both G21 and Committee for Geelong were lobbyists for the region, they worked independently and had different priorities that were “highly confusing to investors”.

“We should be asking ourselves why should the government and the council be handing over people’s money to these groups. What is the community really getting in return?”

Mr King said he had resigned from the Committee for Geelong, G21, Geelong Chamber of Commerce and the Liberal Party to ensure his independence.

“As an independent, I will not be beholden to anyone other than the ratepayers. I intend to speak my mind.

“The reason I am raising these issues now is to focus the new council on being a singular one voice for Geelong.”

G21 Elaine Carbines said it would be inappropriate for her to respond to Mr King’s comments “at this time”.

Highton centre $5.5m but...

$17m Armstrong facility ‘biggest’ A $17 million children’s and community centre to open at Armstrong Creek will be the “biggest” of its kind in greater Geelong, City Hall has announced.

Expressions were open to build the integrated facility in eastern Armstrong Creek for opening in 2019, City Hall said in a statement on Thursday afternoon.

“The project will be the biggest integrated centre of its kind in the greater Geelong region,” the City said.

“The new centre will include 99 new preschool places and long day care for 116 children, as well as maternal and child health and family support services.

“It will be built next to the new Armstrong Creek Education Precinct, which is currently under construction.”

The facility would offer children’s services along with “shared spaces for the community”, including four rooms, a commercial kitchen and co-working spaces, City Hall said.

“Construction is expected to commence towards the end of 2017 to early 2018, with the centre slated to open in 2019.

“The project has received $7.24 million of funding from the Victorian Government, with the rest to be funded by the City of Greater Geelong.”

City Hall director Linda Quinn said the centre reflected “the incredible growth we’ve continued to see in Armstrong Creek”.

“It’s an exciting and much needed project for families and the greater community of Armstrong Creek.”

“Robust” consultations on the Highton centre included an information session with 100 residents at Bellaire Primary School last month and hundreds more “engaging online”.

“While the plans and design were warmly received, the session also heard community concerns about traffic and parking,” the City said.

“The centre will offer 43 new off street parking spaces to cater to staff and parents. A traffic engineer has also been engaged to review the impact of the site on Belle Vue Avenue and to mitigate the increased traffic to the area.”

City Hall plans to build the centre on “underutilised land” behind Bellaire Primary School.

The facility would “provide a connection between early years and primary school for children in the community”.

“Construction is expected to begin in January 2018 and be completed in November 2018.

“The project is progressing through the design stage, and community feedback will be taken on board,” the City said.

Deakin offers answers in ABS deal The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has partnered with Deakin University to improve the national authority’s online surveying.

In 2016 the bureau’s Australian Census went ‘digital first’ for the first time.

But non-responses and hacking attacks led Federal Labor leader Bill Shorten to label the nation survey the “worst-run Census in the history of Australia”.

Deakin vice-chancellor Professor Jane den Hollander said Deakin research would the help the ABS understand barriers to the public responding to surveys online.

Projects under the agreement would improve the quality of electronic data and response rates from households and businesses, while cutting red tape, Prof den Hollander saidABS could draw on Deakin’s “multi-disciplinary expertise and ex-

perience, combined with the latest technological innovations,“ she said.

Prof den Hollander and the ABS Australian Statistician David Kalisch signed the agreement at Deakin’s Waterfront Campus Wednesday.

She said the agreement would strengthen Deakin’s relationship with the bureau, which established its National Data Acquisition Centre (NDAC) at the waterfront campus in 2016.

“Deakin is committed to supporting the communities we serve.

“We are pleased that government agencies such as the ABS have chosen to invest in Geelong and the local economy through jobs and research programs that will spring from our partnership.”

The NDAC brought 300 new jobs to Geelong.

The centre collects data from 26,000 households a month and 100,000 businesses a year.

Local man dead, NZ investigating

By Luke Voogt A Torquay father of two has died in a two-car crash on New Zealand’s South Island.

Stephen Hayden, 46, died at the scene on Monday, along with a 72-year-old New Zealand man in the other vehicle.

Mr Hayden’s cousin, Geelong businessman Mark Hayden, suffered non-life-threatening injuries. He was recovering in a New Zealand hospital this week.

New Zealand police said the pair’s vehicle crashed on State Highway 8 between Hayman and Tekapo Canal roads about 5.15pm local time.

Authorities notified Mr Hayden’s family on Tuesday, a police spokesperson said.

He was married to prominent Torquay real estate agency proprietor Lynne Hayden. The pair has two young daughters.

Mr Hayden had developed a reputation for surfing large waves. He also enjoyed windsurf-

ing and was a pioneer of kiteboarding on the Surf Coast.

Friends said Mr Hayden and his cousin were in New Zealand for a skiing trip.

Tributes on Facebook described Mr Hayden as generous and without fear in big surf.

Police named the 72-year-old victim as Nigel Stuart Freeman from Twizel.

New Zealand police temporarily closed the road before a Serious Crash Unit began investigating.

Police declined to discuss potential causes of the crash while the investigation was underway.

The police spokesperson was unable to provide any further detail.

“Police’s thoughts are with the family and friends of Mr Hayden and Mr Freeman,” the spokesperson said.

Police put out a call in New Zealand for witnesses to the smash or anyone who saw a silver 2017 Toyota Highlander travelling north on State Highway 8 prior to the crash to contact them.

Geelong West artist Janne Kearney has made yet another art prize final following her recent success at an international portrait competition in the UK. Last month Janne’s painting ’86 made the top 53 in the prestigious BP Portrait Award, London, out of 2500 entries from 87 countries.

“Just to be shortlisted makes me in the top two per cent in the world,” the 54-year-old said.

“More than half a million people will see that painting.”

Janne is now chasing a top prize closer to home in Colac’s Corangamarah Art Prize, with two paintings Run and Love.

The competition’s paintings will end up on the walls of a Colac aged care facility, an idea Janne loved.

“It gives them access to some fantastic art that they otherwise wouldn’t be able to see.”

Janne taught herself to paint at age 43 despite her lack of formal training.

“I always wanted to be an artist but life just got in the way,” she said.

“I have raised my family and lived life to support everyone else. It’s my time now - I am achieving things in a field I never thought I had any place in.”

Janne grew up the youngest of five children in Norlane and her mother died when she was nine.

“Life was a struggle back then,” she said. “So university just wasn’t an option.”

She became the first female painter and decorator at Ford, where she said she experienced regular sexual harassment and bullying.

Her time there and her “underprivileged background” inspired her artistic success, she said.

“It probably makes me fight for the underdog - bringing attention to gay rights, mental health and the unemployed.

“It’s my way of putting the spotlight of some the people who find it difficult to have a voice.”

Her latest series, Dystopia, explores street art, youth and industrial decay from the backdrop of an abandoned power station.

Janne paints in her home studio, which her husband created out of an old stable in their backyard.

“My husband has been my rock,” she said.

Another dry month drains water storages as capacity now down to 60% UNDER THE WEATHER Lindsay Smail An almost Australia-wide dry spell during June resulted in the Geelong region recording waybelow average rain for the month.

From the Otways to the Bellarine Peninsula, totals fell significantly short of the long-term usual figure for June.

The dry conditions followed other below-average results during May. Consequently, the levels of the region’s water catchments declined over the course of the month.

Total storage finished June at 60.5 per cent of capacity, so the next few weeks might presage a very dry winter.

Urban Geelong generally received 12mm of rain with most areas across the region generally

recording less than 20 per cent of their usual June average. The month finished as the sixth driest June on record. The driest June locally was in 1984 when only 5mm was recorded.

Unlike the rain results, temperatures were close to normal for June.

Minimums averaged 6.4C, which is exactly the mean figure for the month. Maximums averaged 14.7C compared to the long-term figure of 14.5C. The warmest day for the month reached 17.4C on 20 June. The coldest day recorded a maximum of just 12C on the 27th, with no frosts recorded, unlike the early days of this month.

June delivered no strong wind gusts, rates as greater than 60km/h, and no storms either.

Neither did June include any thunder days, so it was a very calm month overall, albeit dry.

Otherwise, several mists and fogs were the only notable weather features of the month.

A new rehabilitation centre about to open in Simonds Stadium will deliver “world-class” treatment to victims of illness and injury, the State Government announced.

Local MPs and Barwon Health staff members toured the Sunrise Centre last week ahead of its opening in the next few weeks.

The centre is part of the stadium’s Brownlow Stand, redeveloped as part of $70 million stage four works on the stadium.

“The centre will provide world-class rehabilitation services to anyone living with a disability or recovering from an injury or illness in the region,” the government said.

“Specialised health clinicians will use the latest equipment and recovery treatments to help Transport Accident Commission (TAC) and Barwon Health patients regain their independence.

“Returning to work will be made easier for people recovering from injury, with the help of work readiness assessments and vocational rehabilitation services.

“A new concussion clinic will also provide expert advice on the treatment of concussion to the community, sporting groups and health professionals.”

The TAC provided $1 million to ensure the new facility was “fitted out with the latest equipment and technology”, the government said.

Lara MP and Victorian Sports Minister John Eren praised the new facility after the tour.

“The Sunrise Centre is a place where people can go to get the help they need to regain their independence,” Mr Eren said.

Letters Stay vigilant on libraries Without the thousands of petition signatures, hundreds of letters and emails, and community rallies by disenfranchised library users, the Chilwell and Highton libraries would have closed on 30 June, with all the books removed and the buildings sold.

Under pressure, the three Andrews governmentappointed administrators voted to pass the decision on to an elected council by voting to keep the libraries open until 30 June 2018 (Geelong Indy, 30 June).

In the next chapter of the libraries saga, users will need to seek input to City of Greater Geelong’s social infrastructure plan, whose as-yet-undeveloped “social equity principles" will inform the “model of service delivery“ for the libraries.

It looks as if we need to keep reading in order to know what is being proposed. Hopefully this time there will be genuine consultation with those affected by council decisions before they are made.

However, in his report to the recent council meeting, Brett Luxford, the City’s investment and attraction director, stated that the rationale for the closures “remains unchanged".

Flag for LGBTIQs, not gay marriage In April five Surf Coast councillors - Rose Hodge, David Bell, Libby Coker, Magot Smith and Martin Duke - argued it was both appropriate and necessary for council to lobby the Australian Parliament on behalf of the community by flying the rainbow flag until marriage equality was achieved.

Councillors Clive Goldsworthy, Heather Wellington, Carol McGregor and Brian McKiterick objected to council politically lobbying on the community’s behalf without its consent. All councillors expressed personal support for marriage equality.

After a divisive community debate council agreed to continue flying the flag at a new location where it would not overshadow the Australian flag and without attached message to the parliament. The flying of the flag now makes no representation on behalf of the community about marriage equality, simply a gesture of support for the LGBTIQ community.

The apparent view of the five councillors that they can politically lobby federally on any issue they consider appropriate if it is in some way relevant to some members of the community is misplaced. The Local Government Act 1989 should be amended to make it clear civic resources should not be used this way.

I encourage community members to communicate to councillors expectations about reasonable boundaries of their authority to represent the community.

Cop this for playing politics On 15 June I staged a community law and order forum at Drysdale. Residents worried about the increasing, ugly state of local crime attended.

I invited local police but they advised me they were not allowed to attend because it would be deemed “political”, so I was interested to notice not only police attendance but lead roles at two other crime forums in the region last week, chaired by Bellarine MP and Police Minister Lisa Neville.

I am equally a local MP and a representative of western Victoria, so police attendance at my Drysdale forum should have been similarly relevant. I hope the police attendance at Ms Neville’s forums was not just a case of playing politics with police.

The minister treads a fine line. The last time Labor did this crime statistics were fiddled to its advantage, which led to the Baillieu Government establishing the independent Crime Statistics Agency.

Ms Neville was at first dismissive of crime figures. What a sight it must have been for her when 400 people pack halls, scared about the crime reality she doesn’t see.

Things happen when you look the other way.

It’s official: fracking’s safe In last week’s Indy Ralph Huisman continued his demonisation of fracking, citing the case of Pavillion, in the US state of Wyoming, where “chemicals from nearby fracking” allegedly made drinking water toxic.

The entire global warming industry has gone hysterical about Pavillion but what’s the truth?

Last December Wyoming’s Department of Environment and Quality released a final report finding that: “it is unlikely … hydraulic fracturing has caused any impacts to the water-supply wells” and that the “presence of bacteria in many of the watersupply wells suggests that this may be a cause of taste and odour issues”.

Since 1949 the US has drilled around two million fracking wells. Last December, after a five-year study, the US EPA could not produce any evidence of any significant problems with fracking.

I will leave it to the reader to decide just who spreads fake news.

Graham J Bradbury (Letters, 30 June) hit the nail on the head in regards to corruption in Australian politics.

He expressed the feelings of a large portion of voters.

In many conversations I have noticed an awakening of political consciousness. The political climate has changed and voters no longer allow for business-as-usual politics.

Mr Bradbury’s suggestion to abolish political parties and instead elect independents from each community was correct.

Bill Shorten is trying to create the illusion in the media that he represents the middle/working class man but he is paid a privileged salary, not a middleclass wage. He voted in parliament to cut penalty rates but promised to reinstate them within 100 days if elected prime minister.

Opera acts for youth in classic

Opera Australia brings the Mozart classic The Marriage of Figaro to Geelong on Saturday as part of its 2017 tour of Australia.

Geelong’s talented young singers will take to the stage when the show comes to the city, and have the chance to audition for musical glory on Monday.

The Geelong Youth Choir will perform songs in three of the opera’s four acts and was busy rehearsing with music director Denise Hollingsworth this week.

The choir’s young singers will join Opera Australia’s artists on stage in full costume as part of the performance.

Lara teenager Dylan McBurney was thrilled to perform alongside Australia’s prolific opera artists.

“It’s been a great opportunity to work with such professional musicians and improve my musicianship immensely,“ the 15-year-old said. “It’s also a lot of fun.“ Opera Australia is giving four regional secondary school students the opportunity to experience life as a performer through the 2018 Regional Student Scholarship program.

Opera Australia’s Artistic Director Lyndon Terracini was in Geelong ahead of show to audition young hopefuls, and said nurturing talented youngsters in regional Australia was incredibly important. “(They) may be considering a career in opera, but feel the opportunities are a world away in the big city.

“We need to encourage those dreams and provide practical help on their journey into the music industry.”

The scholarship includes a visit to Opera Australia’s headquarters in Sydney in January 2018 for a week of opera master classes.

The Marriage of Figaro has entertained crowds for centuries, with its the witty, fast-moving vocals and the melodic, charming ensemble writing.

Opera Australia will perform Mozart’s classic comedy in English with a live chamber orchestra at Geelong Performing Arts Centre on 8 July.

The cast of includes some of Opera Australia’s finest singers plus a touring Chamber Orchestra under the baton of conductor Simon Kenway.

“The Marriage of Figaro is a great opera to tour and with this wonderful Australian creative team this will be a show regional audiences won’t want to miss,” Terracini said.

Director Michael Gow and Set and costume designer Robert Kemp give Mozart’s comedic masterpiece a makeover and retell a one household’s hilarious adventures over a single day of madness.

“Michael Gow and Robert Kemp are masters of storytelling, and they have created a version of The Marriage of Figaro that will be unforgettable,” Terracini said.

The award-winning creative duo had created an incredible production, featuring stunning period costumes and a clever set, he added.

Over the past three years 1000 children in regional Australia have performed with Opera Australia.

Justin Case for holidays panto

By Luke Voogt Drysdale’s Liam Erck makes his solo playwriting debut this month with his new pantomine Justin Case. Liam joined Drysdale’s 3Triple2 4 Kids when he was in high school and “had nothing to do on the holidays”.

“I thought this would be a great way to do what I love, have fun and entertain some kids,” the 20-year-old said.

Liam wrote the pantomime for the school holidays, after noticing the lack of sleuth-themed plays in the 3Triple2’s repertoire.

“I thought why not write a spy one - kids will love that,” he said. “You can do so much stuff on stage with it.”

“I’ve got a really good cast of actors and they throw up a lot of ideas. A lot of them have done kids performances before, so they know how to handle it.”

In the play, Justin and partner Anita Clue have just graduated training when their boss, Justin’s mum, sends them on a mission to find out what evil mastermind Robin Banks is planning. In their journey across the globe, they come across an eccentric French chef, a busy-body party planner and discover the true plans of what Robin is up to.

Liam threw a few adult jokes into the pantomime along with his pun-based names to keep the older crowd entertained while their children watched.

“Some of them will go over the kids’ heads but we want to make sure the parents enjoy it as well,” he said.

Liam dreams of being an actor, rather than a playwright, and has acted in several 3Triple2 pantomimes.

But he said it was important to develop his talents in “other branches” of theatre. Liam directed and co-wrote the play Molly’s Magic with 3Triple2 Theatre’s Kerrie Reynolds, who described him as “flamboyant” and “a visionary”.

“He’s a very talented young man,” she said.

“He’s directed two plays for us and performed in several.”

With colourful costumes and “some very good sound effects” the show was perfect for primary school-aged children, Kerrie said.

“Justin Case is a good little play I’m really pleased with how he’s written it.“ Theatre 3Triple2 4 Kids has performed 250 plays to audiences across Geelong and the Bellarine Peninsula for the past 10 years. Past shows include classics such as Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

The group has also performed locally written originals, like Mother Goose, 3..2..1.. Blast Off! and I, Henry Robot Justin Case runs at the Potato Shed from 11 to 14 July, with giveaways and a colouring competition.

SPORT Cats plan to tame Lions for Tom’s 200th match The Cats will need their best to beat the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba Saturday in what will be courageous defender Tom Lonergan’s 200th game.

Lonergan is lucky to be alive - let alone playing his 200th - after losing a kidney in a game against Melbourne in 2006.

He suffered severe damage to the kidney in the now-infamous collision which occured when he backed into a marking contest.

Standout round 15 debutant Wylie Buzza was weary of Brisbane, despite them sitting last on the ladder.

“We don’t think Brisbane are pushovers,” he said.

Geelong has beaten Brisbane by an average of 10 goals in their last four encounters, but the Lions showed their potential in a sensational comeback win last weekend.

“As you saw on the weekend, they dominated Essendon in the last quarter and came from a good margin behind to get the win,“ Buzza said.

The 21-year-old starred in the Cat’s thrilling draw with the Giants and was one of three Geelong rookies to play in the match.

Buzza was hopeful of again winning selection for the clash with the Lions.

Because of the late call-up, none of his family were in the stands to see him kick two goals and lay a team-high seven tackles.

“Fingers crossed, I can get a game this weekend and all the family can come out,” he said.

He and his team-mates trained in warm conditions in south-east Queensland this week to acclimatise for the game, thanks to a fixture anomaly.

“When we train, we train with purpose.“ Buzza won praise from Cats star Harry Taylor after his two goals, the first a set shot from outside 50.

“That was amazing - that first goal,” Taylor told RSN on Monday morning.

“The smile on his face, it was just raw emotion and excitement.”

Taylor said Buzza had earned his place, replacing Daniel Menzel who sustained a last-minute knock to the knee.

“He’s actually played some really good footy in the VFL this year for us, working extremely hard now for a long period of time.”

Chris Scott joined Taylor in his praise following last Saturday’s game.

“Wylie’s going to get some attention because of his hair and because of his name,” Scott said.

“I hope he gets some attention for his straight goal kicking as well.”

Scott said the trip to Queensland was “no holiday” and that the Cats were training hard for Saturday’s encounter.

“All we do is transfer our normal Geelong program to the Gold Coast.”

Scott was proud of his undermanned side’s draw against the top-placed Giants, especially the three debutants Buzza, Sam Simpson and Zach Guthrie.

“If (the Giants) are not the team to beat, I’m not sure who is,” he said.

“I don’t think even two days ago those guys would have even considered they’d be making their debut.”

Scott had plenty of selection options for Saturday with captain Joel Selwood and brother Scott, Brandan Parfitt, Jackson Thurlow, Nakia Cockatoo and Daniel Menzel all set to return.

Peak times at sunrise, sunset ON THE BITE Chris Pitman Anglers fishing local beaches over the past week caught Australian salmon and some much larger species.

North winds were favourable for casting 25g to 40g metal lures or bluebait on the run-in tides, with fish over 2kg often the result.

Sunrise or sunset were peak times, although the salmon were catchable all day.

Mulloway became a more common catch from the beaches, with anglers using fresh squid achieving the best results.

Gummy sharks to 1m were also taken from the surf, particularly between Breamlea and Torquay.

Queenscliff anglers fishing the deeper, fast-following tidal waters boated outstanding gummies over 15kg, while the nearby harbour held supplies of fresh squid for bait.

The harbour also produced silver trevally on slack tide for anglers with soft plastics.

St Leonards still held whiting, which were hard to tempt at times. Drifting for squid was more successful, along with heading out to the deeper water and bouncing baits along the bottom for flathead.

Large schools of salmon popped up off Clifton Springs along the Curlewis Bank.

Casting small 10g metal lures or 10cm soft plastics in minnow patterns worked well.

Whiting were caught nearby in 5m to 6m, including fish of 40cm.

Corio Bay’s inner-harbour provided the odd report of winter snapper after some long, cold nights.

Garfish and pinkie snapper kept landbased anglers entertained from Limeburner’s Point to St Helens.

Michael Moore and Trelly’s Geelong’s Adam Van Der Lugt took a trip down to the Aire River with soft plastics on Sunday, crossing paths with some well-conditioned bream. The pair noted that the river was very high.

Freshwater fishos still found Wurdee Boluc Reservoir worth the effort for brown trout to 2kg. Fishing around the weed banks increased the chances of success.

Lake Purrumbete was reliable for brown and rainbow trout, along with the odd Chinook salmon. Trolling Tassie Devils along the east bank worked well.

Plenty of redfin were also taken at Purrumbete by anglers sounding up schools then dropping soft plastics.

Lake Bullen Merri was a great option for land-based anglers, with Powerbait accounting for numerous rainbow trout and Chinook salmon.

Down the Hamilton Highway, Deep Lake kept giving up football-shaped rainbow trout for anglers trolling or bait fishing.

The remainder of school holidays should provide opportunities to take kids fishing with Powerbait at Highton’s St Augustines Water Hole. Saltwater anglers should try for gummies, around in good numbers from St Leonards to Queenscliff.

STATE SELECTION: Greg Brown will join a number of local surfers competing for Victoria this month.
