The men’s quick thinking, along with their decision to not move the woman has been hailed as possibly lifesaving. A social media post on the incident has attracted more than 1200 likes and 120 comments, commending the men on their efforts. But Mr Grant said he and Arley were only doing what anybody would. “I’ve always been taught when someone has a seizure, don’t interrupt them as much,” he said. “And if we weren’t there, there were other cars that may have stopped a minute later.” The Cranbourne man also praised the seven-year-old passenger for being “very smart” during a crisis. “He answered all our questions. He was very helpful,” Mr Grant said. He also thanked others, including an unnamed nurse who stopped to offer assistance. “Without the help of those people who stopped, we would have struggled to look after the seven-year-old emotional child as well as assisting the driver that was in a bad way,” Mr Grant said. “So I thank you for stopping, and the assistance you gave.” It is understood the woman, whose name has been not been revealed to protect her privacy, spent two nights in hospital but is recovering well. She was due to return home at the time of going to press.

School runs away to join the circus There was a lot of clowning around to be had at Chairo Christian School Pakenham’s recent circus day. The school’s Prep students celebrated a term of learning about different celebrations, with a circus-themed dress-up day. Students and some very enthusastic teachers donned clown, ringmaster, acrobat and muscle men costumes for a fun day of circus-inspired activites to coincide with the last week of school for the term. Two Cranbourne men have been labelled heroes after coming to the aid of a woman having a seizure behind the wheel on Cardinia Road on 3 July. Aaron Grant, 22, and Arley Jordan, 17, were driving along the busy 100 kilometre per hour road between Cardinia and Officer about 1pm on Monday when they noticed a car stationary in the middle of the road. On approaching the blue Toyota Mr Grant tooted his horn, hoping to raise a reaction from the other driver, whose car had started to drift back towards Mr Grant’s vehicle in reverse. “Knowing that she was around 10 to 30 centimetres away from the front of my car, I decided to slam my car into reverse hoping to keep a safe distance,” Mr Grant said. A crash between the two cars was avoided but the woman’s vehicle continued to drift backwards, landing in a ditch. Mr Grant and Arley sprang into action. Despite the panic they were feeling, the pair created a roadblock with their vehicle, called triple-zero and ran to the woman’s aid. “I saw the woman slumped over in her seat, and then I saw a seven-year-old child trying to open the car door,” Mr Grant said. Upon seeing the boy, Mr Grant’s “heart just dropped”. “Once you know a kid’s involved you care a little bit more. His poor mum was having a seizure and he was stuck in the car,” he said. Lens looks out on frozen world With Australia’s South-East experiencing its coldest weather in 110 years last weekend, you couldn’t blame locals for taking shelter indoors. Gary Morland recalls his brother Mick’s active childhood. 170056_01

at school and an accomplished runner, golfer, footballer, cricketer and squash player, brother Gary said. He was proud to be still the state’s 440-yard school sports record holder, noting with relish that the event’s distance changed to 400 metres the following year. Above all, Mr Morland was a “leader of men” who had that rare quality - he could “walk with kings” but not lose the common touch. “I always thought Mick had kind eyes and that led to a kind and compassionate heart.” Youngest brother Tom invoked the words of inspirational MND campaigner Neale Daniher, who said: “It’s not what you say but what you do.” Mr Morland was “a doer with a capital ‘D’,” Tom said. His grand-kids shared tributes. Their ‘Pa’ was loved for his tickling moustache-kisses, his jokes and play. Rotary past district governor Tim Moore paid respect to Mr Morland’s tireless efforts for the service club, including hosting seven international exchange students. One Greenland student still regularly received birthday and Christmas cards from her Australian ‘family’, and got into banter with Mr Morland over whose country was the largest island in the world. Mr Morland was the self-de-

clared world president of the Society Of Deserted Spouses (SODS) that convened for a barbecue while their wives were at an Inner Wheel meeting, Mr Moore said. “We’re all lucky for having a friend like Mick Morland in our lives.” Casey Demons Football Club board member Colin Butler outlined Mr Morland’s life-long involvement with football, including a premiership with Beaconsfield in 1974. At Narre Warren Junior Football Club, he was also an administrator of the decade and coach of future AFL stars such as Brendan Fevola, Trent Croad, Chris Newman and Matty Boyd. Mr Butler, when elected to council, appreciated the advice from Mr Morland to understand the issues and vote how his community would want him to vote. “He was an absolutely wonderful man, an icon of City of Casey and a very good friend of mine.”

Casey chief executive Mike Tyler told of how Mr Morland was his greatest supporter at the council table, as well as a champion of sports, the environment, transport and waste management. Mr Morland’s OAM for service to local government and the community said it all, Mr Tyler said. South East Metropolitan MP Inga Peulich said Mr Morland always acted for the best of the community, reluctant to “sink the boot” into befriended political rivals. She also read a warm tribute from Opposition Matthew Guy that noted Mr Morland was a loyal person, good bloke and community servant. At the end, Mr Morland’s coffin draped with a Tigers scarf was carried out to the rousing anthem of his beloved Richmond Football Club. He would surely have approved as some in the crowd joined in the song’s refrain: “Yellow and Black”.

There were laughs - with hardly a dry eye - in a 1000-strong farewell to Casey’s popular, larger-than-life mayor Mick Morland OAM. Mr Morland, 67, who was tragically killed while crossing Princes Highway, Berwick, had a mission to make everybody happy, his wife Kay told the service at Berwick Church of Christ on 5 July. He was a husband, father, grandfather and uncle who devoted himself to his family. But Mr Morland’s family extended not just to genetics and blood - it extended to the diverse crowd in the church. “This room is full to the brim with Mick’s family,” she said. The renowned story-teller loved people, regardless of gender, race or ability. Given half the chance, he would be your best friend, she said. “His mission was to bring laughter and joy to all he met. “The world would be a far better place if there were more Mick Morlands.” Ms Morland urged the gathering to keep talking about her late husband. “It keeps him alive in our hearts.” Others noted his legacy of feats as a councillor, Liberal Party member, Rotarian, football clubman and his family’s hero. He was above all a loving example to all, Reverend Ineke Giles said. She recounted Mr Morland’s message to a Narre Warren North Christmas service last year. He said that Christmas was about love. “It’s about family, it’s about caring about someone in the community who has a lot less than what you have. “It’s about giving someone a hug. “It’s about telling your partner, children, grandchildren and your friends that you love them.” Gary Morland - draped in a Richmond Football Club scarf - told of how his older brother and he grew up in a family of eight children in Richmond. The household extended to 12 at times after they moved to a cementsheeting house in then semi-rural Springvale. He and Mr Morland sometimes had to sleep head-to-toe. Mr Morland was a senior prefect

Found hiding in ceiling By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Cranbourne North building renovator has been found hiding in his ceiling by police after allegedly threatening to kill his former father-in-law at Casey Central car park. On 8 May, the accused - while on a community corrections order - had allegedly walked past the victim and his daughter as they left a supermarket. He then turned around, yelled: “Hey, f***ing p***ters!” and made threats to kill. The accused had just been convict-

ed for similar offending in February and April. He was barred by intervention order from either approaching or communicating with the father-in-law. Three days later, police knocked and waited outside his home for about 90 minutes, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court was told on 3 July. After being found in the ceiling, he then resisted attempts to handcuff him by “aggressively” holding the front of his own shirt, police prosecutor Senior Constable Jaimie Jeffs said.

In a police interview, he claimed he was in hiding because he feared police had been sent to bash him. He denied all allegations at the shopping centre, claiming the victim had made threats against him. Defence lawyer Aaron Eidelson sought a sentence indication for his client, who had been remanded for 53 days for the “inadvertent encounter” at Casey Central. Magistrate Barry Schultz noted the man had been only just released from 56 days in remand in March and April for similar “persistent” offending.

“What does it take for him to realise these (corrections and intervention) orders are to be complied with?” Mr Eidelson said the accused “certainly understands now”, recounting the man had been stabbed 16 times during a recent prison assault and spent four days in hospital. It was “not healthy” for him to spend further time in custody, he said. The accused’s renovation business had also since lost all of its contracts, Mr Eidelson said. “He has paid a very expensive price

for this incarceration.” Mr Schultz said the man’s 53 days in remand since his arrest didn’t “come close” to an appropriate sentence, he said. “On the face of it, a term of imprisonment of six months would appear to be in the ball park.” The matter was adjourned to consider Corrections Victoria’s view on the corrections order’s breach. The man will re-appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court for sentencing on 12 July.

Flannery ‘conflicted’ over Israel ties after his visit By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Casey councillor says he feels “conflicted” about a proposed Israeli sister-city friendship due to the treatment of Palestinians. Cr Rex Flannery recently visited Israel to investigate a colleague’s proposal for Casey to forge ties with Ofakim Municipality. Despite his misgivings, his personally funded trip has led to a further invitation for Cr Flannery to meet with Israel embassy representatives in Melbourne in July. During a cordial meeting with Ofakim’s chief executive, Cr Flannery received a gift of friendship. He concluded that Ofakim was keen to form a friendship with Casey. But to him, sister-city relations were generally a “waste of time”. “I don’t see the purpose. I don’t want to waste ratepayers’ money on something of no value.” Ofakim is a desert city of about 25,000 about 20 kilometres east of the Gaza strip border, where “everybody who builds a house has to put in a bomb shelter”, Cr Flannery observed.

Cr Flannery spoke of the controversial West Bank wall that separates Israeli and Palestinian settlements. The barrier is justified by the Israeli Government to deter terrorism but is also condemned as a means of segregation. “The Israelis don’t want the Palestinians there,” Cr Flannery said. “I certainly couldn’t support anybody who doesn’t support multiculturalism.” He was concerned by the restrictions on Palestinians, who were required to go back to their settlements after work and to carry ID at all times. “In Australia, no-one challenges you on race and creed.” He was however impressed by the arid region’s infrastructure and its agriculture, using a 90 per cent recycled water supply. Casey councillor Rosalie Crestani, who proposed the sister-city ties, said Israeli officials seemed impressed by how Cr Flannery “went out of his way” to visit. Cr Crestani said Israel was a successful mod-

el of unifying cultures, exemplified by the four Quarters of Jerusalem. But there were challenges. “Israel has a right to exist and that should be the basis for negotiation (with Palestinians). “I believe it’s a big Palestinian population in Israel. There’s challenges on both sides.” Cr Crestani has argued for Israeli ties on the basis of sharing Western allies as well as JudeoChristian and democratic values. Ofakim is also near the site of the Battle of Beersheba, where Australian Light Horsemen helped secure a “huge miracle” victory in World War I in 1917. There a bond was forged that was “priceless” and “beyond words”, Cr Crestani said. Friendships were hard to come by for the Israelis, she said. “They can be in a safe place here and we’ll go a long way to protect them. “It lets them know they’ve got another remote location in the world if they need a safe haven.”

Fine could hit dusters By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Hallam mulch and soil yard accused of emitting dust into neighbouring businesses may be fined due to a late and non-compliant report to the Environmental Protection Authority. Folino Plant Hire, which runs Supreme Organic Soils on O’Grady Road, had missed the 31 May deadline to submit a site layout plan as part of an EPA pollution abatement notice (PAN). When the plan was received three days late, it did “not comply with the requirement” of the PAN, an EPA spokeswoman said. The EPA is now considering whether to fine Folino at least $7500 for noncompliance. Both Folino and a neighbouring mulch yard owned by Bark King Group have been given until 31 August to in-

crease their dust control measures and not impact on their neighbours. Unlike Folino, Bark King had submitted its required site layout plan to the EPA by 31 May. If the companies fail to comply with the order, they face fines of up to $770,300. According to the notices, excessive rates of dust deposits from the yards had coated a neighbouring industrial workplace. The highest reading of dust in nearby Bolt Court was 9.42 grams per square metre per month in January - more than double the four-gram amenity standard in NSW. “Numerous potential sources of dust are present on your premises and likely to be a source of dust emissions,” the notices stated to Bark King Group and Folino Plant Hire.

Scores of Berwick College students put their mettle to their pedals to raise $10,000 for charity. Each student from the college’s Frost Learning Team clocked up as many kilometres as they could while aboard stationary bikes from 26-30 June. In the past three years, the Frost team have raised more than $12,000 and ridden more than 4500 kilometres. Last year, they donated $6000 to the Leukaemia Foundation, earning a City

of Casey Australia Day award. The students were set a much steeper goal this year - $1000 for each of 10 most popular charities voted by the student body. “Our students are so inspiring, and we are so proud of them that we have decided to step up our efforts,” teacher Irena Arney said. The nominated charities are Diabetes Australia, the 4Cs, Autism Australia, Ovarian Cancer Research, Motor Neuron Disease, the Cancer Council, Lupus Awareness, Soldier On, Heart Kids and the Starlight Foundation.

Casey Crime Investigation Unit detectives are reminding people to take precautions with their possessions, after a car was stolen from a garage in Berwick late last month. Police believe the garage door of a property on Avebury Drive Berwick was forced open about 11.30pm on 28 June. The thieves were able to steal the silver Mazda 3 from the garage because the car keys were left inside the vehicle. The occupants of the house were home at the time, but did not see the person or people who stole the car. Any witnesses or anyone in the area with CCTV footage from that night is urged to contact Casey CIU on 9705 3111 or Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.

Two boys have been charged following an armed robbery of a milk bar in Berwick on the night of Sunday 28 May. Police allege the two 15-yearolds entered the shop on Bemersyde Drive about 7.45pm armed with a hammer and a knife. The boys were able to extort cash from the shop attendant before fleeing the scene on foot. One of the boys was arrested on Hedgeley Drive and another at an undisclosed property in Berwick a short time after the incident. They were both arrested and charged with armed robbery but have been bailed to appear at the children’s court at a later date.

Asbestos: state steps in By Cam Lucadou-Wells The state’s environmental watchdog has stepped in to oversee the removal of asbestos from a developer’s land close to existing homes near Ward Road and Bounty Way, Berwick. The developer, Moremac Property Group, has been ordered to provide a clean-up plan and an expert's remediation plan to the Environment Protection Authority. “The risk to the community from the land is considered low,” an EPA spokeswoman said. “EPA will continue to monitor the works at the site to ensure they are undertaken in accordance with an agreed clean-up plan and in line with relevant regulations.” Bounty Way residents had raised the alarm in late January after their homes were blasted by dust during tree clearing works on the Ward Road parcel of the proposed Alira estate. In March, WorkSafe temporarily halted asbestos removal after a worker without protective equipment appeared to be collecting debris. In the meantime, Moremac has claimed that asbestos and asbestos-containing material have been illegally dumped on the site. Moremac director Bryce Moore re-iterated that there was no evidence that asbestos had travelled into neighbours’ yards during the January dust storm.

“The tree clearing works were undertaken appropriately and in accordance with occupational health and safety guidelines. “There has been no evidence of asbestos being mixed with the material that was mulched or ... ended up in the mulch piles.” The piles were later inspected and given the all-clear by EPA and WorkSafe, he said. Works on the Ward Road site were “progressing well”, and expected to be cleaned of asbestos by 9 July, subject to weather conditions. “The EPA notice is not a surprise. “In many ways people should take confidence in that there’s EPA oversight of the process.” Meanwhile, resident Mark Weaven has moved out, with his family, from their Bounty Way home. The family was shaken after finding a confirmed shard of asbestos-containing material in their backyard during the January works. “When you look over the fence and see the quarantined off areas, it is apparent as to the extent of the contamination. “Asbestos appears to have been found everywhere on the site, which we knew anyway. “Even though they are going to add fill over the top, there will be quite a lot of fine particles still in the soil here.”

Billions pledged to land airport in south-east By Bonny Burrows and Victoria Stone-Meadows An international airport - rivalling Tullamarine in size - at Kooweerup is one step closer to reality, with a multi-national consortium pledging to bankroll the $7 billion project. However, City of Casey have made their position clear that any airport in the South East will not be possible without upgrades to road and rail infrastructure to support it. Paragon Premier Investment Fund will next week present its plans for a South East airport to the State Government after its chairman, Alande Mustafi Safi, last week received a signed letter of intent from an undisclosed financer, promising to fund its development. As revealed by Star News on 22 March, Mr Safi had been engaging with interested parties in Dubai, who had the cash and desire to bring the project to fruition. Gerard Kennedy, a director of Mr Safi’s group, said at the time “these

people can certainly afford to do it, they want to do it, and they approached us”. While the identity of the backer has not been disclosed, it is understood the group, based in Europe and the Middle East, has built a number of airports, including two in Europe. As previously reported, a Kooweerup airport - as featured in the State Government’s 2013 population growth blueprint Plan Melbourne would service more than five million domestic passenger movements annually and create more than 3000 ongoing jobs, along with an additional 1000-plus during construction. It is also expected to open up international exportation to local businesses, and opportunities for further development and economic investment in the way of supporting infrastructure. Speaking to Star News on Tuesday 4 July, Mr Kennedy said while the funds were there, the project was still subject to government support. Mr Kennedy and Mr Safi will

present the proposal to government next week and a formal legal contract will be drawn up between Paragon and the investors “in the next couple of days”. The businessman stressed it would be a long process before an airport was operational, and even before land was secured. “I will need to talk to the State Government and the group of municipalities behind the south east airport report. I’m sure they’ll have things they’ll want to put to me about timing, planning and land procurement,” Mr Kennedy said. Landowners would also need to be engaged in the consultation process, which would take some time. “There’s probably going to be some concerned conversations there ... you need to be really considerate of the people you’re approaching and do things with the right attitude,” Mr Kennedy said. Local councils have been advocating for the project for many years, and are excited about the prospect of

an international airport at their doorstep. At a council meeting on Tuesday 4 July, Casey Council passed a matter of urgent business supporting the push for the proposed airport along with changes to other transport infrastructure to cater for the increase in travellers. Casey mayor Sam Aziz raised the matter as urgent business and included a recommendation that calls for the State Government to commit to unclogging the roads in the South East and extending the Cranbourne rail line to the airport. The recommendation from Casey also calls on Cardinia Shire and the City of Greater Dandenong to support the proposed airport. “While not located in the City of Casey, we see as ourselves as a regional economy and group and anything that happens in Cardinia will have enormous benefit to the South East,” Cr Aziz said.

Guess who’s coming to dinner? By Cam Lucadou-Wells A smorgasbord of the world’s foods is expected to be shared among friendly company at Casey’s first Welcome Dinner. Its aim is to bring together up to 100 newlyarrived and established residents for a meal. They will bring a plate from their own culture, tell the table about its story and in essence, break bread at the community dinner. “This is a great way to connect people and break through cultural, social and other barriers, through something we all have in common - food,” the project’s state co-ordinator Rachel Clark said. “It’s a way of changing the conversation around people who are newly arrived in Australia. “It’s simple and incredibly effective.” A chat over a shared meal can transcend political debate around asylum seekers. It moves on from the issue of “how they came here”. “We all come to a situation with our assumptions,” Ms Clark said. “What occurs when we sit down and share a meal together, those assumptions are often challenged in a very positive

and safe way.” With the help of facilitators, the dinner-talk is guided into learning more about each other, such as passions. “We encourage our guests not to talk about the same old things, like what do you do for a living? “We want people to connect on a common, universal level.” Successful dinners had been previously held in Melbourne’s west and north. The diverse cities of Greater Dandenong and Casey were an obvious next-stop, Ms Clark said. Organisers hope the dinners will kick-start into more, with volunteers perhaps to stage events in their homes as well as in trusted public spaces. “We want people to come away from the dinners feeling warm, welcomed and a part of something,” Ms Clark said. “We want them to be empowered to be part of the change they want to see in the world.” The dinner will be at Narre Warren South P-12 College on 4 August, 6-8.30pm. By Victoria Stone-Meadows Minister for Employment Michaelia Cash and Member for La Trobe Jason Wood visited Montague’s Apple Orchard in Narre Warren to spruik a new government employment program. The Seasonal Work Incentives Trial targets people receiving Newstart and Youth Allowance (other) to undertake seasonal work in the horticultural industry. Under the trial, people receiving these payments will be able to undertake seasonal work such as picking and packing fruit, and earn $5000 without it affecting their payments. Ms Cash and Mr Wood met with Montague’s CEO Rod McQueen on Thursday 29 June to discuss how the program would assist his business. “There is a definite need for labour here,” Ms Cash said. “Montague’s had to leave some fruit to rot on the trees recently because they didn’t have people to get

it off the trees and that is just unacceptable.” “What we need to ensure is that we are incentivising, in particular, those who are in receipt of welfare to go out and undertake work.” The new program trial begins at the start of the 2017-’18 financial year, will run for two years and will be capped at 3800 workers across the nation. Mr McQueen said Montague’s orchards in Narre Warren and all over the country would greatly benefit from the program’s trial. “We just want the numbers of people on the job and consistency in return to work,” he said. “For us to have the same people coming to work week after week for a six or eight-week period means we are not retraining on a daily basis, so we have savings coming through that way.” The Labor Party supports the program trial, with Shadow Employment Minister Brendan O’Connor saying the program pre-

sented a new pathway to work. “This trial, which Labor supports, will give jobseekers an opportunity to gain short-term, seasonal work without the risk of losing their Newstart payment or other social security benefits,” he said. However, Mr O’Connor was critical the Federal Government had not changed the amount of income people could earn while receiving a government payment. Mr O’Conner said freezing the income-free area allowed to people on payments such as Newstart and Youth Allowance acted a disincentive for people to take on short-term jobs outside the program. “It’s disappointing that the Turnbull Government is at the same time freezing the income-free areas for jobseekers, which will make life harder for people on Newstart who have a small amount of work,” he said. “This is a change that will adversely affect around 264,500 Australians on the lowest incomes.”

Escapees on the run By Cam Lucadou-Wells In its own words, The Escapees Theatre Company has been “on the run” for a decade. What’s left behind from more than 30 shows is a “colourful explosion” of props, costumes, wigs, sets, photos and posters, says company director Alice Scerri. The memorabilia will be exhibited at Hallam

Senior College in July to mark the company’s 10th anniversary. It also coincides with the premiere of the play Lemonade, written and directed by Lara Chamas. Ms Scerri says it’s a beautiful play about a girl coming to terms with an unpromising diagnosis. “She is going through the stages of grief, trying to come to terms with the news,”

LAND MORE COSTLY THAN CONSTRUCTION GUIDE MAT SUCKLING DIRECTOR OF RMS HOMES The end of financial year is upon us. That means H&R Block ads on the TV and plenty of stock take and stock reduction sales at our favourite shops. But it also brings with it some changes to legislation which will affect the housing market. If you can remember the very first home buyers guide, it was in response to the State Government introducing stamp duty exemptions for first home buyers for property purchasers of up to $600,000. As of 1 July, that exemption commences for first home buyers entering land contracts and other contracts of sale for established properties. I made the claim that this reactionary measure would not do as much as the State Government would hope for first home buyers. I believed and still believe that land developers will utilise the savings in stamp duty to effectively raise their prices. This was and still is a ‘Captain Obvious’ prediction. Anyone who has bought or is seeking to buy land knows; regardless of a stamp duty reduction land prices are continuing to rise. I am no genius for pointing to that fact. The fundamental problem hasn’t been solved - the supply and quality of land

available has not changed - it has gotten worse. The last three to four years have seen a phenomenon in housing that previous generations did not experience; the price of land outstripping the cost of construction in the outer suburbs. It is ridiculous to think that product with over 1000 inputs could possibly cost less than a bit of dirt. Don’t be deceived just because building now costs less than purchasing land does not mean building is getting cheaper. The opposite applies - subcontractors and suppliers are continually raising prices to keep with the market. After all, the subbies out there may own a home, or may be looking to build one. They are just as impacted by the soaring prices of land as anybody else and they are simply doing what they can to ensure they keep up with the pace of inflation. The State Government announced in May that it is going to create 17 new suburbs - of which only three are proposed in the South-Eastern corridor. Put simply not enough is being done to help young buyers in the south east get access to affordable and decent land to put a house on. More needs to be done to increase supply and access of land. It is that simple. As for my advice and guidance; those self-employed looking to buy a home Be organised! Don’t procrastinate getting your taxes done - get yourself together and lodge your returns within days of July commencing. Heed this advice now - you will thank me later!

Kids get their own cinema Kids now have their own cinema at Fountain Gate with the opening of Vjunior. Nine Network presenter Lauren Phillips, in her role as ambassador of Vjunior, officially opened the new cinema on Thursday 29 June. “They recently beat Box Hill who were undefeated ... so they’ll be hard to beat.” But McRae and his men can’t wait for the challenge. “We had a taste of playing there (at Beaconsfield) three or four weeks ago against Werribee and we didn’t play our best footy, so this game is going to be a really big one in terms of the end of the season and the calculations of what that means for the finals for us,” he said. “We’re really looking forward to coming out there and showing our fans our best on the day.”

Who will have the final say? By Russell Bennett Pakenham’s Toomuc Reserve could be in the mix to host the inaugural grand final of the West Gippsland Football Netball Competition (WGFNC) if the league’s committee of management opts to hold the showpiece event at a neutral venue. AFL Gippsland confirmed to the Gazette that both Pakenham and Wonthaggi are in the mix, though a decision on the finals venues isn’t expected to be announced until the end of the month. The WGFNC is currently in the process of looking at potential venues for all finals after calling for expressions of interest. The selection criteria is expected to be based on the quality of the football and netball playing surfaces, as well as the facilities including change rooms and toilets. This development comes just under a year after the Pakenham Football Club launched an audacious bid to secure the 2016 Ellinbank and District Football League (EDFL) grand final after submitting a detailed proposal to the league. The move was slammed by then SEFNL chairman Kahl Heinze, who labelled Pakenham’s behaviour as “childish, petulant, selfish,

They sent at least a 10-page submission to us and it will be discussed in about 15 seconds”. But this time around Pakenham Football Club president Andrew Muley indicated he was yet to discuss with the WGFNC the possibility of hosting its 2017 decider. Still, he added: “On behalf of the Pakenham Football Club we’d love to hear from them. “Our venue is available and from the Pakenham point of view all

Garfield’s Beswick Street ground, which has regularly hosted local grand finals in front of bumper crowds over the years, could again host this year’s decider; while the much improved grounds at Kooweerup and Nar Nar Goon also make those potential hosts. Josh Bradley started the charge to victory with a long bomb from outside 50 before Kyle Hendy and Kaleb Van Beek both kicked truly with difficult shots from the boundary. Ryan Hendy then kicked his fifth for the afternoon from the top of the goal-square to sew up victory, on a day when both clubs came together to fight the war on domestic violence. Cole was charged with Unduly Rough Play for his bump on Bellinger, with team-mate Jayden Bootsma also sent from the field and reported for Abusive Language. Pakenham will fight the standard penalties of two weeks for Cole, and three for Bootsma, at a Wednesday (tonight) tribunal hearing. The last-quarter angst took the gloss of a tough game of footy - the Lions bouncing out of the blocks and looking set for an upset victory. Damien Holmes marked and goaled very early in the first term, giving the Lions the impetus to kick four goals from their eight scoring attempts and lead by 14 points at quarter time. The Doves clawed back to lead by two points at the major interval, a margin that remained the same as the teams headed

into that gripping final term. In the end, it was Ryan Hendy’s experience that made the difference. He kicked his second-consecutive bag of five goals, Kyle Hendy kicking three, while the run and carry of Will Smith and Nick Battle, and the desperation shown by the likes of Charlie O’Neill and Raru, got the Doves out of a challenging situation. Pakenham once again showed plenty of fight, but were once again left frustrated with little to show at the final siren. Interleague half-back Sam Blackwood continues to show his class, while Cardona, Joel Laycock and Jack Kowarzik gave the Lions some real drive around the ground. The Lions have won just one game for the season but upcoming games against Tooradin, Officer, and a Round 18 encounter with Hampton Park, provide a real opportunity to build on that number. Wickers of worth By David Nagel The glorious uncertainty of sport would appear to be the only thing standing between Berwick and this year’s premiership after the Wickers toyed with Cranbourne at Casey Fields on Saturday. The battle between the top two teams in the South East Football Netball League was expected to be close, but a passionate desire to apply pressure saw the unbeaten Wickers take control of proceedings from the opening bounce. Boy ... were they impressive. And they beat the Eagles at their own game - that dour defence complementing the most attacking instincts in SEFNL. And it’s happened twice this year now, the Wickers holding the Eagles to just 18 scoring shots in seven quarters of football ... the Wickers creating 48 of their own. “Last year we were elite at creating scoring opportunities but the boys have worked really hard on developing that hard edge as a defensive unit,” said first-year Berwick coach Stewart Kemperman. “Our assistant-coaches have been terrific with that, not just with explaining the method but the ‘why’ behind it and the players have really taken it on board.” Berwick enjoyed pushing the Eagles onto the back foot on Saturday, step by tentative step, forcing turnovers and blocking every possible exit from the back half. They had 11 repeat entries alone in the third quarter with the game played almost exclusively in the Eagles back line. “We’re very proud of that and the fruits of our labour are starting to show,” Kemperman said. “It was a little bit clunky when we started out, but it’s got smoother over time and that just comes through familiarity with the process and each other.” Berwick kicked 3.2 to 0.0 in the opening term and withstood a strong Eagles’ challenge in the second quarter to run away with the contest after half time. They kicked 5.8 to 1.2 in the third term - clearly their most dominant period of the match. Brody Connelly kicked three for the winners, his afternoon highlighted by a spectacular grab in the second quarter. Riley Heddles, Luke Sheppard and Michael Riseley were superb in defence, while Jimmy Harrison, Tom Brennan and Reece Piper gave magnificent service through the midfield. Second draw as good as a win - just ask Berwick By David Nagel The outcome may have been the same but Berwick has taken a far more positive outlook from its latest draw, a thrilling 47-47 finish against Cranbourne at Casey Fields on Saturday. The Wickers, who finished level with Hampton Park last week after squandering a nine-goal three-quarter-time lead, matched motors with one of the in-form teams in the competition, the Eagles coming off a huge win against top-team Tooradin last week. And this draw - well it tasted a whole lot better than the first. “Absolutely, last week against Hampton Park was heartbreaking, it felt like a loss, where this week we fought the game out, the girls dug deep for the blue dress,” said proud coach Janine Kilmartin. “It’s such a strong competition and every week is a challenge, but our girls keep building, doing the one percenters well and focusing on what makes us a good netball team.” Neither side conceded an inch, with Mel Perrins and Olivia Macente having a great duel in the centre for four quarters while many other battles took place. Berwick youngster Abuk Kenyang (goal shooter) made a big difference when she came on at quarter time, testing the skills of a seasoned defender in Tara Cecil (goal keeper). Emily Pratt (wing attack) played a great game for the Wickers, while Nat Sparks (WA) fought for a similar outcome for the Eagles. But in the end - they couldn’t be split.
