There were laughs - with hardly a dry eye - in a 1000-strong farewell to Casey’s popular, larger-than-life mayor Mick Morland OAM. Mr Morland, 67, who was tragically killed while crossing Princes Highway, Berwick, had a mission to make everybody happy, his wife Kay told the service at Berwick Church of Christ on 5 July.

He was a husband, father, grandfather and uncle who devoted himself to his family.

But Mr Morland’s family extended not just to genetics and blood it extended to the diverse crowd in the church.

“This room is full to the brim with Mick’s family,” she said.

The renowned story-teller loved people, regardless of gender, race or ability. Given half the chance, he would be your best friend, she said.

“His mission was to bring laughter and joy to all he met.

“The world would be a far better place if there were more Mick Morlands.”

Ms Morland urged the gathering to keep talking about her late husband. “It keeps him alive in our hearts.”

Others noted his legacy of feats as a councillor, Liberal Party member, Rotarian, football clubman and his family’s hero. He was above all a loving example to all, Reverend Ineke Giles said.

She recounted Mr Morland’s message to a Narre Warren North Christmas service last year. He said that Christmas was about love.

“It’s about family, it’s about caring about someone in the community who has a lot less than what you have.

“It’s about giving someone a hug.

“It’s about telling your partner, children, grandchildren and your friends that you love them.”

Gary Morland - draped in a Richmond Football Club scarf - told of how his older brother and he grew up in a family of eight children in Richmond.

The household extended to 12 at times after they moved to a cement-sheeting house in then semi-rural Springvale. He and Mr Morland sometimes had to sleep head-to-toe.

Mr Morland was a senior prefect at school and an accomplished runner, golfer, footballer, cricketer and squash player, brother Gary said.

He was proud to be still the state’s 440-yard school sports record holder, noting with relish that the event’s distance changed to 400 metres the following year.

Above all, Mr Morland was a “leader of men” who had that rare quality - he could “walk with kings” but not lose the common touch.

“I always thought Mick had kind eyes and that led to a kind and compassionate heart.”

Youngest brother Tom invoked the words of inspirational MND campaigner Neale Daniher, who said: “It’s not what you say but what you do.”

Mr Morland was “a doer with a capital ‘D’,” Tom said.

His grand-kids shared tributes.

Their ‘Pa’ was loved for his tickling moustache-kisses, his jokes and play.

Rotary past district governor Tim Moore paid respect to Mr Morland’s tireless efforts for the service club, including hosting seven international exchange students.

Community News Council adopts 2017-18 Budget The City of Casey adopted its 2017-21 Council Plan and 2017-18 Budget at a Special Council Meeting on Tuesday 27 June.

The plan outlines eight key strategic objectives for the next four years and is part of an overall vision to create Casey as Australia’s most liveable city.

Found hiding in ceiling

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Cranbourne North building renovator has been found hiding in his ceiling by police after allegedly threatening to kill his former father-in-law at Casey Central car park.

On 8 May, the accused - while on a community corrections order - had allegedly walked past the victim and his daughter as they left a supermarket.

He then turned around, yelled: “Hey, f***ing p***ters!” and made threats to kill.

The accused had just been convict-

ed for similar offending in February and April.

He was barred by intervention order from either approaching or communicating with the father-in-law.

Three days later, police knocked and waited outside his home for about 90 minutes, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court was told on 3 July.

After being found in the ceiling, he then resisted attempts to handcuff him by “aggressively” holding the front of his own shirt, police prosecutor Senior Constable Jaimie Jeffs said.

In a police interview, he claimed he was in hiding because he feared police had been sent to bash him.

He denied all allegations at the shopping centre, claiming the victim had made threats against him.

Defence lawyer Aaron Eidelson sought a sentence indication for his client, who had been remanded for 53 days for the “inadvertent encounter” at Casey Central.

Magistrate Barry Schultz noted the man had been only just released from 56 days in remand in March and April for similar “persistent” offending.

“What does it take for him to realise these (corrections and intervention) orders are to be complied with?”

Mr Eidelson said the accused “certainly understands now”, recounting the man had been stabbed 16 times during a recent prison assault and spent four days in hospital.

It was “not healthy” for him to spend further time in custody, he said.

The accused’s renovation business had also since lost all of its contracts, Mr Eidelson said.

“He has paid a very expensive price

for this incarceration.”

Mr Schultz said the man’s 53 days in remand since his arrest didn’t “come close” to an appropriate sentence, he said.

“On the face of it, a term of imprisonment of six months would appear to be in the ball park.”

The matter was adjourned to consider Corrections Victoria’s view on the corrections order’s breach.

The man will re-appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court for sentencing on 12 July.

Flannery ‘conflicted’ over Israel ties after his visit

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Casey councillor says he feels “conflicted” about a proposed Israeli sister-city friendship due to the treatment of Palestinians.

Cr Rex Flannery recently visited Israel to investigate a colleague’s proposal for Casey to forge ties with Ofakim Municipality.

Despite his misgivings, his personally funded trip has led to a further invitation for Cr Flannery to meet with Israel embassy representatives in Melbourne in July.

During a cordial meeting with Ofakim’s chief executive, Cr Flannery received a gift of friendship. He concluded that Ofakim was keen to form a friendship with Casey.

But to him, sister-city relations were generally a “waste of time”.

“I don’t see the purpose. I don’t want to waste ratepayers’ money on something of no value.”

Ofakim is a desert city of about 25,000 about 20 kilometres east of the Gaza strip border, where “everybody who builds a house has to put in a bomb shelter”, Cr Flannery observed.

“They’re living under constant threat of a rocket attack.

“I can understand why they’re so scared and so apprehensive talking to people.”

Cr Flannery spoke of the controversial West Bank wall that separates Israeli and Palestinian settlements.

The barrier is justified by the Israeli Govern-

ment to deter terrorism but is also condemned as a means of segregation.

“The Israelis don’t want the Palestinians there,” Cr Flannery said.

“I certainly couldn’t support anybody who doesn’t support multiculturalism.”

He was concerned by the restrictions on Palestinians, who were required to go back to their settlements after work and to carry ID at all times.

“In Australia, no-one challenges you on race and creed.”

He was however impressed by the arid region’s infrastructure and its agriculture, using a 90 per cent recycled water supply.

Casey councillor Rosalie Crestani, who proposed the sister-city ties, said Israeli officials

seemed impressed by how Cr Flannery “went out of his way” to visit.

Cr Crestani said Israel was a successful model of unifying cultures, exemplified by the four Quarters of Jerusalem. But there were challenges.

“Israel has a right to exist and that should be the basis for negotiation (with Palestinians).

“I believe it’s a big Palestinian population in Israel. There’s challenges on both sides.”

Cr Crestani has argued for Israeli ties on the basis of sharing Western allies as well as JudeoChristian and democratic values.

Ofakim is also near the site of the Battle of Beersheba, where Australian Light Horsemen helped secure a “huge miracle” victory in World War I in 1917.

There a bond was forged that was “priceless” and “beyond words”, Cr Crestani said.

Friendships were hard to come by for the Israelis, she said.

“They can be in a safe place here and we’ll go a long way to protect them.

“It lets them know they’ve got another remote location in the world if they need a safe haven.”

Windermere’s Trek to End Violence

Champion on a quest for harmony at home

By Garry Howe Former Richmond champion and AFL media commentator Matthew Richardson has signed up to walk the Kokoda Track in a quest to help stamp out family violence.

And he’s looking for people to join him on the 11-day bucket list challenge which is aimed at raising money and awareness for south-east based child and family service provider Windermere.

Richo, as he is affectionately known, has been a Windermere ambassador since his playing days and jumped at the chance to head up the Kokoda challenge.

He is confident that former teammates Nathan Brown and Wayne Campbell will join him and a few other former Tigers have also expressed an interest.

The Trek to End Violence will take place from 22 October to 1 November next year.

Windermere chief executive officer Dr Lynette Buoy said the organisation was thrilled to have its ambassador and “all round nice guy” Matthew Richardson head up the trek.

“It won’t be easy but neither are the hardships that face the majority of people we see at Windermere every day,” Dr Buoy said.

“Our Kokoda trek to end family violence gives people the chance to do something good for themselves, and for others.

“I think it’s the right thing to do - to make a difference to the community.”

“At Windermere, it is our mission to build a stronger, connected and more supported community, creating positive change to the lives of those

who need it most, and we’d love for you to help us.”

Participants have to cover their travel costs - amounting to $5000 and undertake to raise $3000 for Windermere to help in its battle against family violence, particularly in the south-east. There is also a $770 registration fee.

The trek takes eight days and the trip duration is 11 days.

The Kokoda Track was the scene of bitter fighting in 1942 as Australian soldiers fought to defend Port Moresby from the advancing Japanese troops.

Today, walking the track has become a pilgrimage for many Australians and the battlefield is a lot closer to home - in our neighbourhoods, our streets and in the homes of people we know and love.

The trek will help Windermere in its fight against family violence.

Along the way, trekkers will honour not only the World War II soldiers who fought on Kokoda, but the many brave people who continue to advocate against family violence and speak out against fear or retribution and alienation from their families, their friends or the community.

Sadly, family violence touches one in every two people across the south-east.

Alarmingly, half of the people Windermere works with every day are experiencing issues relating from family violence.

Richo’s up for the challenge The prospect of walking the iconic Kokoda Track to help in the battle against family violence immediately appealed to former Richmond champion Matthew Richardson.

The fact that it also helped Windermere made it a no-brainer.

Richo, as he is more widely known, has been a Windermere ambassador since the latter stages of his 282-game playing career with the Tigers.

He was approached by then Windermere chairman Carl Strachan and began by spearheading a breakfast in schools program for needy children.

“Windermere services a need in the community that does not get the support it should,” he said.

“Any domestic situation where mums and bubs are in trouble does tug at the heartstrings. You would hate to see anyone in your family being exposed to that. I had two young nieces at the time, which made it resonate even more.

“The work Windermere does really strikes a chord with me.”

The challenge of trekking Kokoda also appeals on a personal level.

“It is something that has been at the back of my mind for a while,” he said.

“It’s certainly on the bucket list and the fact that it’s for Windermere does give you that little kick along.”

Richo said that like many past players, he needed to find a bit of motivation to keep up the fitness levels.

“I do a bit of exercise these days but I certainly don’t smash myself doing it,” he said.

“This is a good way to keep fit and active and help a really good cause at the same time.

“I know people who have done Kokoda and enjoyed doing it, but it really is a physical challenge.”

He said former Richmond teammates Nathan Brown and Wayne Campbell are all but signed on to the trek and he hoped a few more ex-Tigers would join them on the trip as well.

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Hallam mulch and soil yard accused of emitting dust into neighbouring businesses may be fined due to a late and non-compliant report to the Environmental Protection Authority.

Folino Plant Hire, which runs Supreme Organic Soils on O’Grady Road, had missed the 31 May deadline to submit a site layout plan as part of an EPA pollution abatement notice (PAN).

When the plan was received three days late, it did “not comply with the requirement” of the PAN, an EPA spokeswoman said.

The EPA is now considering whether to fine Folino at least $7500 for non-compliance.

Both Folino and a neighbouring mulch yard owned by Bark King Group have been given until 31 August to increase their dust control measures and not impact on their neighbours.

Unlike Folino, Bark King had submitted its required site layout plan to the EPA by 31 May. If the companies fail to comply with the order, they face fines of up to $770,300.

According to the notices, excessive rates of dust deposits from the yards had coated a neighbouring industrial workplace.

The highest reading of dust in nearby Bolt Court was 9.42 grams per square metre per month in January - more than double the four-gram amenity standard in NSW. “Numerous potential sources of dust are present on your premises and likely to be a source of dust emissions,” the notices stated to Bark King Group and Folino Plant Hire.

Billions pledged to put wings in South-East

By Bonny Burrows and Victoria Stone-Meadows An international airport - rivalling Tullamarine in size - at Kooweerup is one step closer to reality, with a multi-national consortium pledging to bankroll the $7 billion project.

Paragon Premier Investment Fund will next week present its plans for a South East airport to the State Government after its chairman, Alande Mustafi Safi, last week received a signed letter of intent from an undisclosed financer, promising to fund its development.

As revealed by Star News on 22

March, Mr Safi had been engaging with interested parties in Dubai, who had the cash and desire to bring the project to fruition.

Gerard Kennedy, a director of Mr Safi’s group, said at the time “these people can certainly afford to do it, they want to do it, and they approached us”.

While the identity of the backer has not been disclosed, it is understood the group, based in Europe and the Middle East, has built a number of airports, including two in Europe.

As previously reported, a Kooweerup airport - as featured in the State

Government’s 2013 population growth blueprint Plan Melbourne would service more than five million domestic passenger movements annually and create more than 3000 ongoing jobs, along with an additional 1000-plus during construction.

It is also expected to open up international exportation to local businesses, and opportunities for further development and economic investment in the way of supporting infrastructure.

Speaking to Star News on Tuesday 4 July, Mr Kennedy said while the funds were there, the project was still subject to government support.

The government is yet to back the project, arguing demand for a third airport was “not yet there”.

But the Paragon group thinks otherwise and is moving forward with plans.

Mr Kennedy and Mr Safi will present the proposal to government next week and a formal legal contract will be drawn up between Paragon and the investors “in the next couple of days”.

The businessman stressed it would be a long process before an airport was operational, and even before land was secured.

Casey Demons Football Club board member Colin Butler outlined Mr Morland’s life-long involvement with football, including a premiership with Beaconsfield in 1974.

At Narre Warren Junior Football Club, he was also an administrator of the decade and coach of future AFL stars such as Brendan Fevola, Trent Croad, Chris Newman and Matty Boyd.

Mr Butler, when elected to council, appreciated the advice from Mr Morland to understand the issues and vote how his community would want him to vote.

“He was an absolutely wonderful man, an icon of City of Casey and a very good friend of mine.”

Casey chief executive Mike Tyler told of how Mr Morland was his greatest supporter at the council table, as well as a champion of sports, the environment, transport and waste management.

Mr Morland’s OAM for service to local government and the community said it all, Mr Tyler said.

She also read a warm tribute from Opposition Matthew Guy that noted Mr Morland was a loyal person, good bloke and community servant.

At the end, Mr Morland’s coffin draped with a Tigers scarf was carried out to the rousing anthem of his beloved Richmond Football Club.

He would surely have approved as some in the crowd joined in the song’s refrain: “Yellow and Black”.

Asbestos vs watchdog

By Cam Lucadou-Wells The state’s environmental watchdog has stepped in to oversee the removal of asbestos from a developer’s land close to existing homes near Ward Road and Bounty Way, Berwick.

The developer, Moremac Property Group, has been ordered to provide a clean-up plan and an expert’s remediation strategy to the Environment Protection Authority.

“The risk to the community from the land is considered low,” an EPA spokeswoman said.

“EPA will continue to monitor the works at the site to ensure they are undertaken in accordance with an agreed clean-up plan and in line with relevant regulations.”

Bounty Way residents had raised the alarm in late January after their homes were blasted by dust during tree clearing works on the Ward Road parcel of the proposed Alira estate.

In March, WorkSafe temporarily halted asbestos removal after a worker without protective equipment appeared to be collecting debris.

In the meantime, Moremac has claimed that asbestos and asbestoscontaining material have been illegally dumped on the site.

Moremac director Bryce Moore reiterated that there was no evidence that asbestos had travelled into neighbours’ yards during the January dust storm.

“The tree clearing works were undertaken appropriately and in accordance with occupational health and safety guidelines.

“There has been no evidence of asbestos being mixed with the material that was mulched or ... ended up in the mulch piles.”

The piles were later inspected and given the all-clear by EPA and WorkSafe, he said.

Police are asking the public to keep an eye out for Ashley McArdle, who is known to frequent the Cranbourne and Narre Warren areas.

McArdle, 25, is wanted by police on warrants relating to bail, theft, assault and driving offences.

He is described as about 165 centimetres tall with a light complexion and a slight build.

As well as Cranbourne and Narre Warren, he has previously been sighted in Frankston, Blackburn, and Box Hill.

Guess who’s coming to dinner?

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A smorgasbord of the world’s foods is expected to be shared among friendly company at Casey’s first Welcome Dinner.

Its aim is to bring together up to 100 newly-arrived and established residents for a meal.

They will bring a plate from their own culture, tell the table about its story and in essence, break bread at the community dinner.

“This is a great way to connect people and break through cultural, social and other barriers, through something we all have in common - food,” the project’s state coordinator Rachel Clark said.

“It’s a way of changing the conversation around people who are newly arrived in Australia.

“It’s simple and incredibly effective.”

A chat over a shared meal can transcend political debate around asylum seekers.

It moves on from the issue of “how they came here”.

“We all come to a situation with our assumptions,” Ms Clark said.

“What occurs when we sit down and share a meal together, those assumptions are often challenged in a very pos-

itive and safe way.”

With the help of facilitators, the dinnertalk is guided into learning more about each other, such as passions.

“We encourage our guests not to talk about the same old things, like what do you do for a living?

“We want people to connect on a common, universal level.”

Successful dinners had been previously held in Melbourne’s west and north. The diverse cities of Greater Dandenong and Casey were an obvious next-stop, Ms Clark said.

Organisers hope the dinners will kickstart into more, with volunteers perhaps to stage events in their homes as well as in trusted public spaces.

“We want people to come away from the dinners feeling warm, welcomed and a part of something,” Ms Clark said.

“We want them to be empowered to be part of the change they want to see in the world.”

The dinner will be at Narre Warren South P-12 College on 4 August, 6-8.30pm.

By Victoria Stone-Meadows Minister for Employment Michaelia Cash and Member for La Trobe Jason Wood visited Montague’s Apple Orchard in Narre Warren to spruik a new government employment program.

The Seasonal Work Incentives Trial targets people receiving Newstart and Youth Allowance (other) to undertake seasonal work in the horticultural industry.

Under the trial, people receiving these payments will be able to undertake seasonal work such as picking and packing fruit, and earn $5000 without it affecting their payments.

Ms Cash and Mr Wood met with Montague’s CEO Rod McQueen on Thursday 29 June to discuss how the program would assist his business.

“There is a definite need for labour here,” Ms Cash said.

“Montague’s had to leave some fruit

to rot on the trees recently because they didn’t have people to get it off the trees and that is just unacceptable.”

“What we need to ensure is that we are incentivising, in particular, those who are in receipt of welfare to go out and undertake work.”

The new program trial begins at the start of the 2017-'18 financial year, will run for two years and will be capped at 3800 workers across the nation.

Mr McQueen said Montague’s orchards in Narre Warren and all over the country would greatly benefit from the program’s trial.

“We just want the numbers of people on the job and consistency in return to work,” he said.

“For us to have the same people coming to work week after week for a six or eight-week period means we are not retraining on a daily basis, so we have savings coming through that way.”

The Labor Party supports the program trial, with Shadow Employment Minister Brendan O’Connor saying the program presented a new pathway to work.

“This trial, which Labor supports, will give jobseekers an opportunity to gain short-term, seasonal work without the risk of losing their Newstart payment or other social security benefits,” he said.

However, Mr O’Connor was critical the Federal Government had not changed the amount of income people could earn while receiving a government payment.

Mr O’Conner said freezing the income-free area allowed to people on payments such as Newstart and Youth Allowance acted a disincentive for people to take on short-term jobs outside the program.

Cancer fight goes by the book for Nossal

By Cam Lucadou-Wells The power of the pen is being used in a campaign to cure childhood cancers.

Two teams of Nossal High School students - the Graphomaniacs and Hakuna Matata - are joining a national ‘Write A Book In A Day’ fund-raising campaign.

On 22 August, the 17 students will be given a brief and then within 12 hours write, illustrate, bind and submit a story book of up to 5000 words.

Each book is then donated to be read

in children’s hospital wards.

The event is organised by The Kids Cancer Project to raise funds for research into childhood cancer - the biggest killer of Australian children.

Since 2007, the Kids Cancer Project has invested $24 million into research.

Nossal library director Kamla Reddy said the project showcased students’ creative talents as well as required them to raise funds through events and sponsors.

By Victoria Stone-Meadows The State Government has backflipped on funding for the Rooming House Outreach Program after facing opposition from the Tenants Union of Victoria and the Peninsula Community Legal Centre.

The PCLC runs the Rooming House Outreach Program in Melbourne’s South East suburbs and helps people in vulnerable living situations across the region.

The PCLC lashed out at the government last week following an announcement funding for the program would be rolled into a state-wide Tenancy Assistance and Advocacy Program (TAAP).

However, this week, the government announced a further $500,000 in funding for the program that will go to the tenants’ union and PCLC. “The government has extended this funding to help tenants in private rooming houses find and sustain long-term housing,” a government spokesperson said.

The Tenants’ Union of Victoria welcomed the announcement of the funding, which will see the program delivered for another two years.

“The Victorian Government has done the right thing here,” Tenants’ Union CEO Mark O’Brien said.

“This program punches above its weight in terms of housing and other outcomes for individuals and it plays a vital role in identifying and reporting illegal rooming house operators.”

“This type of program offers our community significant benefits, particularly given the proliferation of private rooming houses, and should be considered for expansion in the next state budget,” he said.

“We want to be partners in shutting down the slumlords and turning Victoria’s private rooming house sector into a place where people can find safe, secure and affordable

housing.”

At most recent counts, the Victorian Rooming House Register data shows there are 50 registered rooming houses in Casey but there are unknown numbers of illegal and unregistered operators.

CEO of the Peninsula Community Legal Centre Jackie Galloway said she and her team would continue to promote renters’ rights.

“We are part of the make renting fairer campaign and we will continue to raise issues for tenants and residents of rooming houses,” she said.

Pedal power for vital cash

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Scores of Berwick College students put their mettle to their pedals to raise $10,000 for charity.

Each student from the college’s Frost Learning Team clocked up as many kilometres as they could while aboard stationary bikes from 26-30 June.

In the past three years, the Frost team have raised more than $12,000 and ridden more than 4500 kilometres.

Last year, they donated $6000 to the Leukaemia Foundation, earning a City of Casey Australia Day award.

The students were set a much steeper goal this year - $1000 for each of 10 most popular charities voted by the student body.

“Our students are so inspiring, and we are so proud of them that we have decided to step up our efforts,” teacher Irena Arney said.

The nominated charities are Diabetes Australia, the 4Cs, Autism Australia, Ovarian Cancer Research, Motor Neuron Disease, the Cancer Council, Lupus Awareness, Soldier On, Heart Kids and the Starlight Foundation.

FRENZY AT AUCTION NARRE Warren South is continuing to cement itself as one of South East Melbourne’s most sought-after suburbs, with a property selling for a reportedly recordbreaking price of $1,721,000.

million. Recently a house in the same street reportedly sold for $1.46 million,” Mr Ferguson said.

“This property set a record price for the area. It sold well above market expectations, so we’re very happy for our vendors.

“They’re absolutely blown away with the result. It will allow them to bring their retirement forward.”

With a professionally surfaced tennis court, basketball court and a fullyenclosed, solar heated indoor pool and spa, the property undoubtedly attracted buyers due to its numerous lifestyle features. LAND MORE COSTLY THAN CONSTRUCTION MAT SUCKLING DIRECTOR OF RMS HOMES The end of financial year is upon us.

That means H&R Block ads on the TV and plenty of stock take and stock reduction sales at our favourite shops.

But it also brings with it some changes to legislation which will affect the housing market.

If you can remember the very first home buyers guide, it was in response to the State Government introducing stamp duty exemptions for first home buyers for property purchasers of up to $600,000. As of 1 July, that exemption commences for first home buyers entering land contracts and other contracts of sale for established properties.

I made the claim that this reactionary measure would not do as much as the State Government would hope for first home buyers. I believed and still believe that land developers will utilise the savings in stamp duty to effectively raise their prices.

This was and still is a ‘Captain Obvious’ prediction. Anyone who has bought or is seeking to buy land knows; regardless of a stamp duty reduction land prices are continuing to rise. I am no genius for pointing to that fact. The fundamental problem hasn’t been solved - the supply and quality of land

The last three to four years have seen a phenomenon in housing that previous generations did not experience; the price of land outstripping the cost of construction in the outer suburbs. It is ridiculous to think that product with over 1000 inputs could possibly cost less than a bit of dirt. Don’t be deceived just because building now costs less than purchasing land does not mean building is getting cheaper. The opposite applies - subcontractors and suppliers are continually raising prices to keep with the market. After all, the subbies out there may own a home, or may be looking to build one. They are just as impacted by the soaring prices of land as anybody else and they are simply doing what they can to ensure they keep up with the pace of inflation.

The State Government announced in May that it is going to create 17 new suburbs - of which only three are proposed in the South-Eastern corridor.

Put simply not enough is being done to help young buyers in the south east get access to affordable and decent land to put a house on. More needs to be done to increase supply and access of land. It is that simple.

As for my advice and guidance; those self-employed looking to buy a home Be organised! Don’t procrastinate getting your taxes done - get yourself together and lodge your returns within days of July commencing. Heed this advice now - you will thank me later!

Kids get their own cinema Kids now have their own cinema at Fountain Gate with the opening of Vjunior.

Nine Network presenter Lauren Phillips, in her role as ambassador of Vjunior, officially opened the new cinema on Thursday 29 June.

Magpies champion

By David Nagel If actions speak louder than words, then Michael Collins is the most talked about figure in the 64-year history of the Narre Warren Football Club.

He’s arguably the club’s greatest ever player, a six-foot-two, 100-kiloplus powerhouse, with a granite-like desire, who has embodied the Magpies’ spirit in a career that reaches 250 games against Berwick at Edwin Flack Reserve on Saturday.

The just-turned 32-year-old is one of just two men - alongside his great mate Nick Scanlon - to have played in six of the club’s nine premierships, two as captain, while his eight best and fairest awards bear testament to his unparalleled standing at Fox Road.

Collo - quietly spoken but full of self-belief - has to be the mightiest Magpie of all!

“I’ve heard people say that, and I hope they think that because I’ve played good footy for such a sustained period of time, week in, week out, and people notice that above everything else,” Collins said.

“I probably don’t have the ability as some other players, but if you’re racking up possessions each week and giving your all - that’s all you can do. It’s all about passion as well, playing for the one club, I know nothing else, and winning and losing really means something to me.

“People at the club have said I put my body on the line and people follow ... and I’m pretty happy to be thought of that way. It’s great to hear and it always gets you up and about, but I don’t let it influence the way I play, because if you get over-confident the game can bring you back down to earth pretty quick.”

Apart from winning premierships, Collo’s biggest thrill in footy pretty much sums him up as a player.

“I reckon breaking tackles and kicking a goal in a clutch moment is pretty hard to beat,” he said.

“I love the physicality. Even if you can’t win a contest you can impact one, make the player earn it because if you stay persistent you’re never out of the contest.

“Especially in finals, just making that effort to stay in the game can turn things around. The little things like that can really make a difference.”

Collins was a keen basketballer in his early days before a group of school mates asked him down to the Narre North Foxes to fill in for a team that was short on numbers. He played in the

His older brother Daniel played Under 18s at Narre, Michael - then in the Under 16s - taking the advice of his then coach Steve Henwood and playing 10 games with his brother in the higher grade.

He played two senior games in 2002, had a season with the Dandenong Stingrays in 2003, before winning his first senior best and fairest award as an 18-19-year-old in 2004.

And he’s been a loyal Magpie ever since.

“The club has always been welcoming and really supportive,” Collins said.

“When I was 17, I didn’t have a job and Chris Toner told me to give him a call and he’s looked after me ever since.

Blokes like Hammo (Glenn Hamilton)

and Birdman (Brett Evans) always had your back and that definitely made life easier coming through.”

“But for me it’s just always been about family and friends, they’ve always been here so I’ve never really had a reason to leave. My brothers (Chris and Damian) are here, Mum in the canteen, and Dad’s always been on the sidelines giving his opinion, it’s been a great experience for us all.”

And what’s the difference between the Michael Collins that first walked in to Narre and now?

“Probably about 13 kilos,” he said with a dry chuckle.

“I was probably a bit more timid back then, more within myself. I’m still not an extrovert by any means but if I need to say something now I will, where I used to just sit in the corner.

“On the footy field I always be-

lieved I could do something to make a difference, and even if I couldn’t I’d give everything trying to do it. Mental toughness is all about giving that little bit extra when you think you’re cooked, and grinding something out, they’re the best moments in footy.”

Collo said he played with and against some great players in his time.

“Shaun Daly (Keysborough) was the best when I started out, a real gutrunner who was hard to keep up with,” he said.

“Jared Goldsack from Pakenham, Robbie Taylor from Beaconsfield, they were always tough, and Madi Andrews (Berwick) is probably the one to beat now, he just runs all day and keeps on finding the footy. Holty’s (Cranbourne full forward Marc Holt) probably the best player I’ve seen from the opposition.

“For us, Josh Tonna is a great tal-

ent, Scanners, when he’s on, he’s great to watch, and Dylan Quirk is already good but he’s only going to get better as he grows as a player. Look out when he’s 25 or 26.”

And is the 300-game milestone on the horizon?

“Let’s get past 250 first, I’m feeling every one of them at the moment, but once footy’s gone it’s gone, so I think I’ll keep going for as a long as I can.

I’m feeling pretty good at the moment but if I start struggling I don’t want to be one of those players that just holds on, I want to be out there giving it my best.”

“Another premiership is the lure.

It would be great to get one before we finish and go out in style ... I like the sound of that.”

And so do the Narre Warren faithful Collo.

By Nick Creely Current Springvale South captain and legendary cricketer Craig Slocombe has joined the Executive Committee of the Dandenong District Cricket Assocation (DDCA) after the sudden resignation of Dee Field as the Junior Vice-President.

Dee has been on the DDCA Execu-

tive Committee for four years - with her last two years as Junior Vice-President, but has had to give up the role due to family reasons.

Joe Aszodi will be elevated from his executive title and will fill the spot left by Dee as Junior Vice-President of the association.

Slocombe is set to add some essen-

tial cricket knowledge and fresh ideas to the DDCA executive as a current star player of the competition, and arguably the finest cricketer produced in the competition’s history.

He has previously filled the role of the Under 21 coach and has been a DDCA selector for a number of years in representative matches, in which the association has enjoyed plenty of success.

Slocombe only recently signed on again with the Bloods for the 2017/18 season, along with former Cranbourne star Steven Spoljaric.

DDCA president Michael Hawking will once again lead the competition in 2017/18, Hilary Wijeratne has been nominated once again as Vice-President (Seniors), Neil Evans will occupy the role of Treasurer, while Ray Nicholls

will hold his place as DDCA Secretary.

The DDCA Executive Committee for 2017/18 will be: Craig Slocombe, Peter Barnes, Lance Draper, Neil Shaw and John Brooks.

Brooks is the only new member of the committee.

Robert Williams will also take on the role as Umpires’ Representative for the DDCA.

By Nick Creely FFV STATE LEAGUES REVIEW - ROUND 14 STATE LEAGUE 1 - SOUTH EAST Another horror weekend for the Casey Comets has seen them slump further down the table, and now could face possible relegation.

Facing a side almost identical on the ladder Morwell Pegasus - the Comets couldn’t get the job done at Ronald Reserve on Saturday, losing 3-2.

They now sit 11th on the ladder, with only Mooroolbark in their way of being stuck on the bottom of the table.

Morwell set the game up through a 2-1 first half that the Comets couldn’t reel in.

The Comets get the opportunity to bounce back when they clash with Morwell Pegasus on Saturday afternoon at Comets Stadium.

In other matches, Warragul defeated Mooroolbark 2-0, Malvern City drew St Kilda SC 2-2, Langwarrin SC won 3-1 over South Springvale, Mornington crushed Manningham 4-0 and Clifton Hill edged out Caulfield 2-1.

STATE LEAGUE 2 - SOUTH EAST An astonishing 8-3 victory for the dominant Doveton has seen the Doves surge into top-spot on the State League 2 ladder.

Up against Seaford United - anchored to the bottom of the table - the game was always danger signs.

Star player Rinor Muriqi put on an almighty show, kicking four goals - including two in the first 30 minutes - to stun the North Seaford Reserve crowd.

The Doves have now leap-frogged Eltham Redbacks with eight rounds left to play.

Down at Edithvale Reserve, Pakenham United’s form slump continued with a 4-2 loss to Chelsea FC. With scores level at half time 1-1 apiece, Chelsea kicked away with a trio of goals from Liam Burford.

United are now eighth on the table after the loss.

VICTORIAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE REVIEW - ROUND 11 Casey’s five game winning streak has officially come to an end after a crushing 65-point loss to powerhouse Port Melbourne on Saturday afternoon.

Looking to make it six in a row against the very side that kick-started their thrilling run just over a month ago, a fierce Borough’s side turned up to North Port Oval.

It was a scrappy opening term, with both teams looking to impose their presence, but it was Port who finally broke away in the middle parts of the quarter to kick four unanswered goals against the breeze, before Noble Park’s very own Ben Giobbi - on debut - dobbed his first VFL goal on the quarter time siren.

Giobbi was impressive on debut and among the best, using his trusty left-foot to set his team-mates up on a regular basis, and looks a long term prospect down at Casey Fields.

But it was just a flittering bright moment in a bitterly disappointing day, with the Borough’s suffocating the Demons with incredible tackling intensity.

Wickers of worth

By David Nagel The glorious uncertainty of sport would appear to be the only thing standing between Berwick and this year’s premiership after the Wickers toyed with Cranbourne at Casey Fields on Saturday.

The battle between the top two teams in the South East Football Netball League was expected to be close, but a passionate desire to apply pressure saw the unbeaten Wickers take control of proceedings from the opening bounce.

Boy ... were they impressive.

And they beat the Eagles at their own game - that dour defence complementing the most attacking instincts in SEFNL. And it’s happened twice this year now, the Wickers holding the Eagles to just 18 scoring shots in seven quarters of football ... the Wickers creating 48 of their own.

“Last year we were elite at creating scoring opportunities but the boys have worked really hard on developing that hard edge as a defensive unit,” said first-year Berwick coach Stewart Kemperman.

“Our assistant-coaches have been terrific with that, not just with explaining the method but the ‘why’ behind it and the players have really taken it on board.”

Berwick enjoyed pushing the Eagles onto the back foot on Saturday, step by tentative step, forcing turnovers and blocking every possible exit from the back half.

They had 11 repeat entries alone in the third quarter with the game played almost exclusively in the Eagles back line.

“We’re very proud of that and the fruits of our labour are starting to show,” Kemperman said.

“It was a little bit clunky when we started out, but it’s got smoother over time and that just comes through familiarity with the process and each other.”

Berwick kicked 3.2 to 0.0 in the opening term and withstood a strong Eagles’ challenge in the second quarter to run away with the contest after half time.

They kicked 5.8 to 1.2 in the third term - clearly their most dominant period of the match.

Brody Connelly kicked three for the winners, his afternoon highlighted by a spectacular grab in the second quarter.

Riley Heddles, Luke Sheppard and Michael Riseley were superb in defence, while Jimmy Harrison, Tom Brennan and Reece Piper gave magnificent service through the midfield.

Second draw as good as a win - just ask Berwick

By David Nagel The outcome may have been the same but Berwick has taken a far more positive outlook from its latest draw, a thrilling 47-47 finish against Cranbourne at Casey Fields on Saturday.

The Wickers, who finished level with Hampton Park last week after squandering a nine-goal three-quarter-time lead, matched motors with one of the in-form teams in the competition, the Eagles coming off a huge win against top-team Tooradin last week.

And this draw - well it tasted a whole lot better than the first.

“Absolutely, last week against Hampton Park was heartbreaking, it felt like a loss, where this week we fought the game out, the girls dug deep for the blue dress,” said proud coach Janine Kilmartin.

“It’s such a strong competition and every week is a challenge, but our girls keep building, doing the one percenters well and focusing on what makes us a good netball team.”

Neither side conceded an inch, with Mel Perrins and Olivia Macente having a great duel in the

narios come finals time.

With Britt Tyers out with an ankle, O’Shanassy saw an opportunity for defender Charlotte Petelinek to make her debut, while regular stars like Dani Cameron (GK), Ash Gill (WA) and Jasmine Jones (WA-centre) went about their work in efficient fashion.

A brilliant defensive effort has seen Narre Warren secure a 58-31 victory over ROC at Kalora Park.

The Magpies were at their ruthless best in the first half, with Tracey Dell (GK) and Corrina Emery (goal defence) relying on some great support from the midcourt to hold the Kangaroos to just 11 goals.

ROC has now lost seven games straight after defeating Pakenham in round three and face some tough games against Cranbourne and Tooradin over the coming weeks.

And a brilliant second quarter performance has seen Doveton shake off a determined Pakenham in a 60-41 victory at Robinson Oval.

Rahni Samason (goal shooter) and Shae Gee (goal attack) combined well for the winners who

Double joy for Cavaliers

By Nick Creely BIG V BASKETBALL REVIEW ROUND 14 STATE CHAMPIONSHIP MEN In one of the most important weekends in the context of the season, the Casey Cavaliers rose to the occasion, defeating Diamond Valley and Werribee in successive days.

In a tough and gritty affair with Diamond Valley on Saturday, the Cavs broke away briefly in the second quarter to gain a vital lead, and eventually held on 84-79.

All five started reached double figures for the Cavs, with Brandon Polk (18 points, 12 rebounds) once again the star of the show.

Heading off on the road to play Werribee the following day, the Cavs once again stood up - winning 79-75.

After both sides held firm in a tight first three quarters, the Cavs stormed home with a dominant 22-12 final quarter.

The pair of wins sees the Cavs in fifth place with four rounds to go, and now face McKinnon on Sunday at 3pm.

DIVISION ONE WOMEN The Cavs are barely hanging on in 2017 after a tough weekend of losses to Werribee and Camberwell respectively.

They are just one game now off the bottom with four rounds to go.

Saturday saw the Cavs travel to Werribee and lose 82-77, in what was a promising performance.

The Devils got out to a healthy 14-point lead early before the Cavs roared back to draw level at half time.

But a masterclass by Rohanee Cox (25 points) saw the Devils edge the Cavs in a dominant final term.

Sunday saw the Cavs completely dismantled by Camberwell 86-69, in a game that took away from the hard work the previous day.

The Dragons built steadily throughout the game and ran away in the final quarter.

Rebecca Borham (15 points, five rebounds) lead the way for the Cavs, but there were few winners from the disappointing performance.

YOUTH LEAGUE TWO MEN In a cracking top two clash with the Pakenham Warriors, the Cavs fell just short 71-75 at Casey Indoor on Saturday night.

Both teams started the clash evenly, and it looked like the Cavs might pip the top placed Warriors when they surged to a lead at half time.

But the Warriors fought back admirably, and eventually found a way to win with only seconds left on the clock.

Hunter Marks (22 points, 11 rebounds) stood up for the Cavs, with Jordan Gooiker (17 points) also on song.

But luckily, the Cavs had the op-

portunity to bounce back the next day, knocking off Mornington 78-71 at Mornington Basketball Stadium.

The Cavs had control of the majority of the match, holding on to an early 27-16 jump to hold off the Breakers.

Jordan Gooiker was again in strong touch, adding 21 points to the board.

The Cavs are second on the table, and still within touching distance of the Pakenham Warriors at the top.

YOUTH LEAGUE TWO WOMEN Despite a mixed weekend of results, the Cavs surged into third spot, displacing the Pakenham Warriors.

The Cavs traveled to Knox Basketball Stadium on Saturday evening to face Blackburn - who are second on the ladder - and fell 65-53.

Looking to bounce back from the disappointment, the Cavs hosted Mornington, comfortably winning 6859 at Casey Indoor on Sunday.

A strong 29-16 first half saw the Cavs gain a vital lead despite a fightback from the Breakers.

Jessica McConchie (15 points) stood up under pressure, while Cristy Daly (13 points, five rebounds, four assists) played a strong all round game.

By Nicholas Creely VICTORIAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE - WOMEN’S REVIEW - ROUND 7 Not much luck has been associated with Cranbourne in 2017 - and it continued on Saturday with a heavy 79-point loss to the red hot VU Western Spurs.

As a result, the Eagles sit third last with a 2-5 record, and face a tricky battle to remain relevant in this year’s premiership race.

The Spurs showed no mercy to the undermanned Eagles, kicking away to a 41-point quarter time lead, and eventually left the Eagles goalless in the first half while piling on three goals in the second term.

Hayley Wildes finally hit the scoreboard in the third quarter, but the game was iced as the Spurs kicked on once again with a five goal second half.

“We had 11 out - with what we had we battled hard all day and did the best we could they’re a first class side,” Eagles coach Sein Clearihan said.

“When you take quality players out of the side you’re always going to struggle - but the kids I brought up they battled all day and couldn’t do any more than that.

“To the girls’ credit - they had a real crack and that’s all you can ask for - the scoreboard probably dosen’t reflect that, but we were proud of their efforts.”

Clearihan said that the Spurs are a team of genuine quality, and taught his side a lot about ball movement and work ethic.

we were up for it, and at others stages they completely destroyed us,” he said.

“In the end I was just moving magnets around to see what we could do.”

With another tough challenge against the supremely talented Darebin Falcons on Saturday, Clearihan said it will be another great learning curve for his youngsters as he waits for his senior heads to return.

“I won’t have anyone back for another two to three weeks away - I’ll get Jasmine Grierson back this week which adds a bit but Romy Timms goes out for a couple of weeks - it seems to be two in three out at the moment,” he said.

“We just have to guide the girls and give them instruction this week we have Darebin, and we are going to put in a couple of kids.

“Daisy Pearce is supposedly playing, so I might run a kid on Daisy and give her a chance to learn the game - we will give it our best shot, but when eight or nine top liners are out, you’re

up against it.”

The game is set to be played at Casey Fields at 11am, right before the TAC Cup clash between Gippsland Power and Sandringham Dragons.

St Margaret’s and Berwick Grammar School had the fantastic opportunity to provide a football clinic for the Year 7 and 8 Boys' team and the Year 7 and 8 AFL 9s Girls' team on 20 June, thanks to the Richmond Football Club.

Nine senior players spent the afternoon on the front oval of St Margaret’s providing valuable tips and techniques from handballing to kicking for 30 very excited and eager young players.

In addition to the skills clinic, the players also spent time answering many questions from the girls and boys.
