Motors moving high development at the site.

The planned hub building stretches 120 metres along Monbulk Road and is set to include a supermarket, childcare centre, shops, offices and a two-level parking station.

Subsequently, the Belgrave Motors’ application sought approval to operate their motor repairs business from the rear of the new site, in addition to an existing carwash.

The carwash and ancillary cafe are to be retained at the front.

There is some concern in the community about the business’s potential impact on local amenity.

Nearby resident and objector, Norman Delmas, addressed council, saying the conditions applied to ensure resident amenity remained were “pathetic”.

“The site is a poisoned chalice, what is proposed is too much for the site to sustain,” he said.

Mr Delmas said while he opposed the application, he was not unsympathetic towards the applicant.

He added that he had sound argument for appeal.

The owners of Belgrave Motors told the ‘Mail’ they did not want to comment on the decision until the time for appeal was over.

Meanwhile, all councillors were satisfied the relocation would not affect local amenity.

Cr Clarke said he had engaged with the applicants and was aware of numerous issues within the community.

council and council officers have been very thorough in the way they’ve handled this matter,” he said.

“The existing owners are looking for a new home and this is a site where they’ll need to downsize a bit and they are aware of that.

“They’ve said they are sensitive to the issues of amenity in regards to neighbours.

“We have to make sure this relationship can be maintained and I have been assured they will hold that utmost in respect to the neighbours.”

Cr Terry Avery added the applicants appeared to have “worked hard to get a good outcome here. Some sensitivity to the neighbours and I think this will be a good outcome”.

A community consultation meet-

ing was organised in May and was attended by three objectors and 22 supporters.

In the application, car usage is estimated to be between five to 10 cars being cleaned per day, with no greater demand for weekends.

The car wash can operate up to 32 vehicles per day.

Another key concern has been increased noise associated from a compressor related to the motor repairs.

Belgrave Motors have said the air compression unit is to be contained in an insulated box in the alcove of the building.

The applicant estimated about seven motor-repair bookings per day could be accommodated.

The end of an era is nigh, as a familiar sight in Belgrave is set to depart.

At its Tuesday 27 June meeting in Warburton, Yarra Ranges Council supported Belgrave Motors’ bid to relocate to 1571 Burwood Highway, Tecoma.

The move represents the end of decades of service operating from the iconic site, located along the Monbulk Road-Burwood Highway roundabout, which offers a visual gateway to the main street.

Present business owners Shane and Cindy Taylor were forced to look for a new home after site owner and business developer Joe Pulitano, from Pulitano Properties, announced plans to develop a three-storey low, two-storey

Paper was an experience

By Kendra Spencer As a Year 10 student from Mount Lilydale Mercy College, I was blessed with the opportunity to work alongside staff from the Mail News Group through completing a week of work experience.

Work experience is a time in which new things are to be learnt and experienced, and this is certainly how I felt at the Mail.

The experience is one that is unforgettable, as I met new people who were always willing to help and I was taught the way in which newspapers work.

Even though many people disagree with the concept of being a journalist, I am still fascinated by journalism and I know for a fact that this is what I wish to do with the rest of my life.

After travelling with Kath Gannaway to Warburton, I un-

derstood that being a good conversationalist is a large part of the experience.

The ability to discuss things and further question people is a very important skill to develop, and I am hoping that this will come with time.

During my time here, I also participated in media call-outs and proof-read articles.

Peter Douglas, who works as editor, and also my supervisor for work experience, helped me through every step of the week.

He was very supportive and able to help me through each individual step of the newspaper process.

I will be forever grateful for the kindness that he showed me and all the help that he gave.

I learnt many new things over my time at the Mail News Group and I am happy to say that it has motivated me to work harder and strive for

what I want.

The motivation for working with the Mail News Group was to make writing a reality.

My interests have always revolved around English and writing-based subjects, where I was freely able to express my opinion and feelings.

This stemmed from having fantastic English teachers throughout my time at primary school and high school.

What originally interested me in completing work experience at a newspaper was the ability to get involved in the media side of things, and somehow contribute to my community.

After each step of the way, I became more and more interested in journalism, and I am more than grateful to everyone who was so kind to me and who helped me throughout my time here.

End of firewood season Forest Fire Management Victoria reminded firewood collectors the autumn domestic firewood collection season ended statewide on Friday 30 June.

Under the Forest Act 1958, people who collect firewood outside designated firewood collection areas or a firewood collection season, take more

than the maximum allowable amounts or sell firewood they have collected can face on the spot fines of $607, or a maximum penalty in court of one year imprisonment or a $7583 fine, or both.

can be reported to the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning on 136 186 and quote ‘Operation Block Splitter’.

The spring firewood collection season will open on 1 September.

Be aware of diabetes

By Derek Schlennstedt In the lead-up to National Diabetes Week, Eastern Health is urging people with or at risk of developing diabetes to seek professional assistance after rates of the condition continue to climb in the Yarra Ranges.

It is reported that 4.2 per cent of residents in the Yarra Ranges are registered as having diabetes - a statistic that Jennifer Williams, Diabetes Educator at Healesville Hospital and Yarra Valley Health is concerned about “Diabetes is a serious condition.

Between 2008 and 2013, it contributed to eight per cent of all deaths in the Yarra Ranges - a higher rate than deaths due to traffic accidents,” Ms Williams said.

Overall the 4.2 per cent statistic is lower than the state-wide average of 5.2 per cent, however the prevalence of diabetes has risen by 92 per cent between 2008 and 2017 in the hills and urban area, including Upwey.

Those who develop diabetes are three times more likely to suffer from kidney failure, and Eastern Health

has reported that patient numbers of kidney failure have doubled in the past eight years.

Healesville Hospital has recently undergone a number of improvements including several new dialysis machines, but Ms Williams warns that prevention is better than a cure.

While we have a fantastic new hospital facility with local access to renal dialysis - we’d prefer people access the preventative services we have available to avoid their condition progressing and impacting their quality of life,” Ms Williams said.

Healesville Hospital and Yarra Valley Health’s Healthy Living and Diabetes team will be hosting free supermarket tours at Healesville Coles on Tuesday, 11 June, at 9.30am and 10.30am.

Local residents are also invited to attend a healthy morning tea on Friday, 14 July at 10.30am at Healesville Hospital and Yarra Valley Health to meet the team.

Clarke up, head down

By Peter Douglas Selby-raised elite cyclist Simon Clarke is head down into his third Tour de France.

After taking on a greater leadership role within his Cannondale-Drapac team in 2017, the all-rounder is sitting nicely on the saddle after the first stage started on 1 July in Dusseldorf.

Before leaving for France to see his son in action, Yarra Ranges councillor Mike Clarke said Simon had been injury-free and all signs pointed towards a strong showing.

“He’s been riding really strongly in the lead-up, with no injuries and is more of a leader in the team ... we’ll keep an eye out for any breakaways,” Cr Clarke said.

“He’s not a specialist climber, or sprinter, or time-trialist - but his overall qualities make him a valuable asset to the team.”

Clarke is coming off a stellar year

in which he competed admirably in the 2016 Rio Olympics.

He was the only rider from the Australian men’s road cycling team who finished the race.

Clarke finished 25th overall.

The all-rounder is among nine Australians who were to compete at this year’s Tour de France and he is becoming one of the more experienced riders.

Dimension Data rider Mark Renshaw is the most experienced, with nine tours, while Adam Hansen (Lotto Soudal) has eight tours behind him, and potential winner Richie Porte will compete in his sixth.

Clarke, who attended Selby Primary School and Billanook College, told the Mail last year the Dandenongs had helped him succeed.

“Many cyclists travel hours to get to the Dandenongs, but I just headed out of my front door,” he said.

Operation Panther The mysterious black cat is back in the Yarra Ranges.

Operation Panther will see Maroondah and Knox Highway patrols support the Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol in conducting sustained traffic operations on the major roads in and out of the Yarra Ranges over the coming months.

The operation is launched in time for the school holidays, when many families are leaving to go skiing or snowboarding at the snowfields.

Operation Panther will be specifically targeting speeding motorists but police will also be conducting vehicle safety checks, in addition to breath testing, and drug testing.

The primary focus of the operation is to ensure motorists using these major roads have a safe journey and arrive at their destination alive and well and Yarra Ranges Highway patrol reiterate that risky behaviour on our roads not only jeopardises the safety of drivers, but that of their passengers and other road users.

Emerald Village Meats burglary Around 4am on Monday 3 July, Emerald Village Meats was broken into.

It is reported the offender was a male wearing high-vis and gained entry into the butchers by forcing the door open with an axe.

The offender has then taken a tin with some money in it, as well as the butcher’s diary which was used for a community barbecue and also for taking orders. Emerald Village Meats urges people who had made a booking with the community barbecue or who had made orders recently to contact them on 5968 5354.

Trailer theft Monbulk police are investigating the theft of a tandem trailer from Princi Motors Pty Ltd in Silvan between 12.20am and 2am on Monday, 26 June. Victoria Police is urging Victorians to do their part in ridding communities of illegal firearms and dangerous weapons to help support the nationwide Firearm and Weapons Amnesty.

From 1 July, Victorians will have three months to surrender their unregistered and unwanted firearms, ammunition and weapons to licensed firearms dealers without fear of prosecution.

Seniors are going solar smart Pensioners are signing up for a pioneering Yarra Ranges Council program that will help them to install solar and save money on electricity bills.

The Solar Savers program is helping pensioners to install solar with no upfront costs.

Participating households will gradually pay for their panels through their rates payments over 10 years.

At the same time, power bill savings will more than cover the cost of loan repayments; the Solar Savers model means every household could be at least $100 ahead at the end of each year.

This initial offer is limited to only 15 households.

At its 27 June meeting, council endorsed the Safeguarding Children Policy, which aims to not only protect children, but to identify potential signs of abuse and better facilitate connections with support services.

Yarra Ranges Council developed the policy in response to the Child Safe Standards, which was introduced in late 2015 as a result of the Government’s ‘Betrayal of Trust’ Inquiry into the Handling of Abuse by Religious and other Non-Government Organisations.

Cr Cliff said the policy helped staff and volunteers to understand their responsibilities.

“By formally adopting this policy, we can continue to improve the work we do and create a safer and more inclusive environment for children, and create the potential for a reduction in child abuse in the Yarra Ranges in the long term,” Cr Cliff said.

“The policy provides clear guidelines around acceptable and unacceptable behaviours for staff working around children and their families, in addition to those outlined in council’s corporate code of conduct.

Sports of all sorts grants Non-profit organisations seeking to improve sport and recreation infrastructure in the Yarra Ranges are encouraged to consider new funding opportunities.

Through Yarra Ranges Council’s 2018 Capital Development Program, financial assistance is available for projects throughout the region.

Examples of projects that received funding last year include an upgrade of accessible facilities at the Yarra Pistol Club, a studio fit-out and new accessible toilet for Warburton Health Spaces - The Wellspring, as well as a front entrance upgrade for the Mountain District Badminton Association.

“We will be training staff to ensure everyone is up-to-date and informed about this policy.”

Council has established numerous designated child safety officers (DCSOs) across the organisation, whose role will be

to provide advice and support to any areas of the organisation which has identified suspected child abuse.

The DSCOs will also play a significant role in future governance arrangements to ensure council continues to monitor and continuously improve how it maximises child safety.

Moore said the council grant allowed the club to build a new 50-metre shooting range with accessible walkways, doors and toilet facilities.

“One of the things we are very conscious of is that we would like to do more to make the property accessible to people with disabilities and provide improved wheelchair access,” he said.

“People with a disability can take up shooting, depending on whether they are eligible under the Firearms Act.” The club also received a major grant from Sports Recreation Victoria to bring facilities to a national standard to host shooting competitions.

Meanwhile, Montrose Tennis Club was awarded $7855 to build a fenced tennis hitting wall which will be open to the public, as part of the 2017 program.

Club secretary Russ Connors said the wall would allow people to warm up and have a hit of tennis even if they aren’t part of the club.

“We thought a hitting wall would be a good idea but we couldn’t afford it,” he said.

“People using the Montrose playground can come and have a hit. It might encourage more people to sign up for a membership.

Electric Mike is low-carbon

By Peter Douglas Some call him ‘Mike’, others ‘councillor’ but many more are starting to call him the ‘low-carbon councillor’.

Cr Clarke’s new nickname has come about because of his penchant for riding his beloved electric bike throughout the Yarra Ranges, while undertaking councilrelated duties.

From his home in Ferny Creek, he can be regularly seen pedalling his electric bike to the council offices in Lilydale, or to appointments with ratepayers or community groups throughout his own Lyster Ward.

Cr Clarke said his bid was not only born from a desire to be fitter, and to lower his carbon footprint, but to encourage others to follow his lead.

“Electric bikes are a great way to get around, not only for the environment but to keep fit,” Cr Clarke said.

“I’m feeling a lot fitter these days.

“It’s also more convenient than motorbikes or cycling, because you don’t need to change into leathers or lycra.

“I load up my backpack and away I go.”

Cr Clarke said he tried to ride his electric bike wherever possible.

But did he ride all the way out to Warburton, which hosted the most recent council meeting?

“No, I won’t be going that far,” Cr Clarke joked.

Meanwhile, he said he had recently finished work on a strategic plan for a revamped bus network for the Yarra Ranges.

Frustrated by what he believes is both an inadequate and under-used service, Cr Clarke has been working with various groups and individuals to prepare the plan.

In August, he is due to show the plan to Victorian Deputy Premier, James Merlino, and State Minister for Transport, Jacinta Allan.

“The present system is causing unnecessary isolation in the community,” he said.

“We’re looking for a purposeful, meaningful plan that will create a better service for the region.”

Cold comfort I was sad to read Liz Arnold’s comment that a coffee vendor denied a customer a coffee in their re-usable cup at a football match (Mail, 27 June) but it provides a nice segue to clarify their argument that it’s a health and safety issue.

In fact, there are no legislative requirements in the Victorian Food Act 1984 (the Act) or the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code (the Code) that would prohibit a business from serving food or drink in a customer’s own reusable container.

Councils do not have the power to override this legislation either.

This means that the refusal to serve food or drink in a customer’s container is purely a business decision.

So next time this happens, politely draw their attention the state and national legislation and make it clear that they have the power to be one of the Hills’ treasured sustainable businesses!

No Tanks I wish to voice my objection at the number of ‘Thomas the Tank’ days scheduled for Gembrook for the 2017-'18 season.

There were 14 last season and added to that were four Santa days and a Rotary Fun Run with Thomas, making 19 events in all.

I have attended meeting after meeting and voiced my disapproval at the number of events which cause traffic congestion, parking difficul-

ties, noise, dust, litter and general loss of the town ambience.

I have written to the Cardinia Council, local members of parliament, and Tourism Victoria.

I have been encouraged to participate in the Gembrook Community Group, which I have done.

It was with great regret I learned, despite my protestations and those of many others, it was announced last week at a stakeholders’ meeting that Puffing Billy is to proceed with the same number of events next season.

What price is there on the beauty and peace and quiet of Gembrook, to be cannibalised by commercial big business to prop up a profit line?

One's pest, another's pet

By Derek Schlennstedt They’re cute, they’re fluffy, they’re considered a pest; but rabbits are becoming a common domestic pet among younger families.

As rabbits become the easier pet option, Judi and Bryce Inglis at the Olinda Rabbit Run-Away Orphanage are concerned that a lack of regulations surrounding the species is resulting in higher numbers of rabbits being dumped.

Rabbits are considered a pest in every state of Australia, and although it’s hard for any rabbit lover to consider the idea of these creatures as pests - it isn’t domesticated, de-sexed rabbits that are the issue, it’s feral rabbits.

Domestic rabbits do not come under the Domestic Animals Act - the purpose of which is to promote ‘animal welfare and the responsible ownership of dogs and cats’.

This exclusion of rabbits is resulting in a lack of responsibility by local councils or state governments who are not required to include them in their Animal Management Plan. On top of this, large numbers of breeding rabbits being dumped is resulting in an overabundance at shelters which then forces many to be euthanized, Judi and Bryce said.

“Private organisations will generally say, ‘we don’t have the resources to go out and do anything about it’ and refer you to council, but then they’ll turn around and say, ‘it’s not covered by the act or not covered under our animal management plan,’” Bryce said.

“So you get these people calling both and going around in a circle, until they end up calling us.”

Yarra Ranges Council has stated that while rabbits aren’t included, rangers do exhaust all avenues in re-

homing dumped rabbits and are currently re-evaluating their Animals Management Plan.

“The Domestic Animal Management Plan is required to be produced by all councils every four years under the Domestic Animals Act 1994,” Yarra Ranges Council director of Corporate Services, Troy Edwards, said.

“We are specifically required to address matters concerning cats and dogs in the plan.

“In preparing this plan, we have the opportunity to gather feedback from the community on how well it provides for cats and dogs and their owners, along with what finding opportunities exist to improve the experiences of pet owners.

“We encourage all residents with pets to have their say at yarraranges. vic.gov.au/lists/current-consultation,” Under the Domestic Animals Act, only cats and dogs have laws surrounding breeding and microchipping.

It is for this reason that both Judi and Bryce are calling upon the government to act and include pet rabbits which Judi said would also reduce wild rabbit numbers.

“The increase of rabbits as pets is becoming more and more prevalent, and it has to be addressed,” she said.

“We need to include the pet rabbit in Animal Welfare Laws, to provide protection from abuse, neglect, uncontrolled breeding, dumping and release in the Australian landscape.

“The dumping of pet rabbits has seen an increase of strays in the suburbs adding to the feral rabbit problem.”

Rabbit Run-Away Orphanage is Victoria’s first and only no-kill rabbit rescue and recently opened a sponsorship program to sponsor a cage for their special needs rabbits.

Dance has taken over A successful formula for engaging the community and developing opportunities in the Yarra Ranges has seen exponential growth in local dance participation.

The Dance Tracks project, developed by Yarra Ranges Council, Burrinja and Ausdance, ran from 2014-2016 and focused on increasing awareness and participation to create an ongoing dance culture.

The project involved a co-ordinated programming approach across council managed venues and Burrinja, engaging local dance professionals and offering a range of opportunities for the community to dance.

A project summary of the initiative showed a dramatic increase in attendance at dance events, with ticket sales increasing 140 per cent between 2014 and 2016.

Local venues doubled their dance programming in the same time period, and attendance at participatory dance programs at Yarra Ranges venues increased by 681 per cent.

Dance Tracks energised and engaged public spaces as much as it did cultural facilities and town halls, bringing dance in all its many participatory guises to the community.

A month of free dance events was held across the municipality as part of the Dance Here program, where more than 1200 participants took part in 75 free dance events.

The overall project had positive outcomes for the sector and dance professionals in the region building active networks between the dance communities in the Yarra Ranges.

Yarra Ranges Mayor, Noel Cliff, said the pro-

gram was successful and had an ongoing impact on residents.

“We have been receiving increasing applications for dance-related programs through our Arts, Culture and Heritage Community Grants since Dance Tracks began,” Cr Cliff said.

“In the latest round, we’ve had a 400 per cent increase in dance-related applications, compared to the 2014 round before Dance Tracks. These new locally initiated dance projects show an increasing interest in working locally and collaboratively.

“Our residents vote with their feet, and we’re seeing numbers increase at our dance-based events and, in turn, more events are being organised.”

Dance Tracks was about building a sustainable increase in awareness and participation in dance. While the project may have formally finished there are numerous legacy programs continuing throughout the region, such as Dance Now and Dance X (an exhibition in motion).

With the confidence gained from the Dance Tracks program, council and Burrinja developed a new initiative called Creating Tracks - Dance to commission professional contemporary dance work development.

Through this program KAGE, the multi-award winning dance company founded by Kate Denborough and Gerard Van Dyck, will be creating Tonic, a new dance work to be performed at three venues across Yarra Ranges in late 2017.

Circus is back again The return of the fourth annual Burrinja Circus Festival will take place these winter holidays, until Saturday, 8 July.

Just Promise you’ll see it?

The Promise (M) Starring: Oscar Isaac, Charlotte Le Bon, Christian Bale The Promise is a harrowing (if unbalanced) thriller about a relatively little-known tragedy in the early twentieth century.

In 1915 Turkey, an Armenian medical student (played by Oscar Isaac), a teacher (Charlotte Le Bon) and an American reporter (Christian Bale) become entangled in the Armenian genocide, a systematic campaign by the Ottoman government to eradicate its Armenian population.

Through solemn, natural

performances and non-explicit yet hard-hitting violence, The Promise unflinchingly depicts the cruelty human beings are capable of against any kind of other. Isaac and Bale’s characters (Mikhail and Christopher, respectively) drive themes of compassion and integrity, and the film maintains an exceedingly bleak atmosphere with a tinge of hope.

Unfortunately, a completely unnecessary love triangle between Mikhail, Christopher and Ana (Le Bon’s character) is the root of The Promise’s problems.

While Mikhail and Christopher’s mutual love for Ana was intended to present a common reason for them to persevere

through the madness, it does reduce Ana to an object (however kind and brave) of the male characters’ journeys, and serves to highlight how underwritten she is. Mikhail and Christopher both undergo strong character development, but Ana experiences very little.

Removing the love triangle (and Mikhail’s redundant betrothed fiance) would have streamlined the plot and rendered the emotional impact more punchy and less Hollywood-sentimental.

Shedding light on a littleknown tragedy, The Promise is an imperfect but gripping and important film.

By Cameron Hutchison AFL YARRA RANGES Round 11 was the first part of AFL Yarra Ranges’ Division 1 split round and some games brought some surprise results, while the favourites keep on rolling on.

Wandin now sit on top of the ladder, but Olinda play next Saturday and will be expected to share the top-of-thetable spot.

Healesville are clearly second, with Olinda in third.

Woori Yallock are safe in fourth with Upwey making up the final five.

Seville and Belgrave are now clear by two games on top of the Division 2 ladder.

Yarra Glen share third spot with Powelltown, while Alexandra make up the five with 24 points.

In the Under 18s, Emerald and Mount Evelyn are in top spot with Wandin one game behind in third.

Healesville holds onto fourth spot with Upwey in fifth.

The eight is then made up with Warburton, Woori Yallock and Gembrook.

Olinda holds onto top spot in A Grade Netball closely followed by Wandin and Woori Yallock.

Monbulk and Warburton make up the five.

Belgrave are clearly flag favourites in Division 2 and are clear by two games on the top of the ladder.

Yarra Glen is second with Yarra Junction, Powelltown and Yea making up the five.

They kicked 4.3 to 1.4 in the second quarter and had a comfortable lead of 29 points at half-time. Both sides kicked three goals in the third term but the margin increased to 31 points. Emerald kicked another four goals to two in the last quarter, meaning Gembrook are still left looking for their first win.

The third quarter was tight but Healesville won it by six points. The lead was only 20 points at half-time and Healesville were certainly not impressive, while Warburton were still hanging in.

Healesville finally got their game going in the last and romped away with a ten goal to one last quarter, with the margin blown out to 77 points at the final siren.

Woori Yallock stopped in the third quarter and only kicked 2.2 to 1.3 but their lead was still 56 points turning for home. The last quarter was all Woori Yallock with six goals to two.

The wind may have been a factor but Woori Yallock certainly made the most of it when they had the opportunity.

The wind did play a part in this game and Kinglake had the slight advantage in the second, kicking six goals to four and a lead of 10 points going into the main break.

Kinglake kept up the pressure in the third term and held Yarra Glen to only one goal for the quarter, extending their lead to 19 points at three-quarter time. It was goal for goal in the last and when it looked like Yarra Glen were going to make a charge, Kinglake kicked back. The final margin was 17 points, and this match has opened the race for the final five.

The Blues put their foot down in the third term, kicking 7.4 to 1.2 and the lead had blown out to 60 points. It tightened up in the last with ten goals but Seville came out on top come the final siren.

Frosty start

By Jamie Strudley YARRA RANGES ATHLETICS The sub-zero temperatures didn’t deter the hardy athletes from Yarra Ranges Athletics as they gathered for the annual Cross Country Handicap Day. With results from the season blended in the secret formula to give athletes their start time, the handicappers’ goal was to create a close finish for each event.

The day began with frost still coating the hills of Margaret Lewis Reserve in Coldstream, and the first runners in the 500m race had the pleasure of leaving their footprints be-

hind.

The girls filled the early finishing spots, with several PBs, allowing the front-markers to collect the medals.

Congratulations to Lily, Madalyn and Madeline.

In the boys’ race, Harlem finished clear of David in a sprint finish ahead of Tobyn, for the minor placings.

Over 1000m in the second race, Patrick led all the way, running easily his best time for the season.

Tahlah also ran a strong race to win the girls event.

Samuel and Blake took

home silver and bronze for the boys.

Violeta and Zoe took home silver and bronze in the girls race.

It was raining PBs over the 1500m distance, six of the first seven finishers all achieving a new best performance at this venue.

Ari’s 22-second improvement allowed him to hold off Tyson in a sprint for the boy’s gold medal.

Luke was not far behind for a well earned bronze.

The smiling Tahlia paced herself well to ensure no one caught her to lead the girls.

MONBULK JUNIOR FOOTBALL Freezing conditions greeted the first teams of the Monbulk Junior Football Club, but the icy conditions didn’t deter an eager bunch of Under 9s. It turned into a glorious winter’s day for remaining teams with spectators needing sunglasses and hats.

UNDER 9 Playing against an older team and minus-two degree conditions gave the team a slow start. The kids started warming up and played great passages by getting in front, running with the ball and kicking it long.

Motoring Cam is on the right track Healesville youngster Cameron Pearson attended the annual Late Model Racing Victoria presentation night at Deer Park Club on Saturday 24 June, receiving the winner’s trophy for the Victorian Club Championship for the 2016-’17 season.

Having finished second in last season’s Club Championship during his debut season in Late Models, the 18-year-old came into his own during his second season, steering his Vic number 10 Healesville Directional Drilling supported XR1 Rocket to three feature-race victories at Rushworth Speedway, Swan Hill’s Sonic Speedway and Wahgunyah Speedway (True Blue 1000).

Going up against some of Australia’s toughest Late Model competitors, Pearson also impressed in the Victorian Title at Wangaratta City Speedway back in January, where he managed to claim the runner-up spot behind South Australian Champion Ben Nicastri, going on to close the season with another pleasing second-place finish to the NSW Club Champion at Sydney’s Valvoline Raceway.

While it was a tight battle in the Club Championship points between Pearson and his HDD Racing teammate Daniel Barton, it was Pearson who managed to get the edge over Barton, with the pair achieving an impressive 1-2 finish for the team.

“It’s been a great season for us and to be able to come away with three feature-race wins, along with the Club Championship, particularly with Dan-

His dad, Justin, took out the 2014 and 2015 Club Championships.

“I’m really proud to have continued my dad’s legacy and it’s an amazing feeling to have joined him as a Victorian Club Champion. We learned a lot this season travelling to different tracks and going up against a number of different competitors, and this is something we’ll look to continue next season.”

Healesville rising star Cameron Pearson has taken all before him.

This week will see Pearson travel to America where he will spend the next seven weeks crewing for fellow Australian Late Model racer and current Australia number three Paul Stubber, who will be participating in the Hell Tour, which takes place throughout Indiana, where Pearson will be based, Illinois, Iowa, Tennessee, Missouri, Michigan and Ohio.

During his time in America, Pearson, who has also transported a Rocket chassis to Indiana, will attend the Donnie Moran Driving School, with the potential to compete in a race meeting at Brownstown Speedway in Indiana on 12 August, one day prior to his departure.

“I’m looking forward to my trip to America and I think it’s going to help

“The Donnie Moran Driving School will no doubt be hugely beneficial to me as a driver, so that will definitely be another highlight. I’m also excited to share this experience with my dad, who will be joining me in late July.”

Auto braking should be standard for our safety crashes, may be prevented with AEB. Even if crashes are not completely prevented, the reductions in speed may be sufficient to prevent death and serious injury.

RACV’s Manager of Vehicle Engineering, Michael Case, said AEB used radar, laser or camera sensors to detect potential crashes and apply the brakes to prevent, or reduce the severity of, a crash.

“We urge vehicle manufacturers to include the technology as standard on all models, as AEB is very effective in situations where there is poor visibility, a driver is distracted or has limited time to react to things like sudden braking of a car in front, or a child running onto the road after a ball,” Mr Case said.

“While there was a variation in performance, all of the systems provide a worthwhile safety benefit.

“AEB can make all the difference in stopping a fright turning into a blight.”

As well as providing a safety benefit, many insurers, including RACV, offer discounts for vehicles with autonomous emergency braking.
