She lost out to Tracie Dickenson from Daryl Dickenson Transport in Queensland at the Trucking Australia gala dinner in Darwin on 23 June.

Ms Stewart’s been around trucks since birth and has worked in the trucking sector since she was a teenager.

It never occurred to her to let her gender stand in the way of pursuing a career in the traditionally male-dominated industry.

FACTORY DIRECT BLINDS FOR LESS

“My grandfather and father were both truck drivers for their entire working lives,” she said.

“I grew up in trucks, around trucks and learning about everything to do with trucks, so when I was 15 I knew I wanted to work in the industry.”

Ms Stewart now has 25 years’ experience as a qualified diesel parts interpreter.

She understands just how costly it is to have a vehicle off the road for any amount of time.

Ensuring those in the industry can get the right parts when they need them is something she takes very seriously, because one wrong part

or unnecessary delays “could be the difference between being held over that night and not being mobile until the following day”.

“The knock-on effect is awful. I take my job very seriously and my ability to help when needed is what I’ve built my entire career on,” she said.

She makes herself available at all hours, taking calls on weekends from customers who she knows feel terrible about disturbing her days off but are only calling because they’re desperate to get vehicles back on the road.

Casey looks to State for family violence funding

By Victoria Stone-Meadows The City of Casey Council will take advantage of the State Government's big spending on family violence prevention as they develop a new family violence strategy.

Casey Council will seek funding from the government and input from experts as it moves forward with implementing a new Family Violence Prevention Strategy.

At the council meeting on Tuesday 20 June, Councillor Rosalie Crestani recounted an emotional discussion she had with an unnamed police officer who manages family violence cases in City of Casey.

The discussion was used to highlight the toll

violence against women and children in the Casey community has on everyone involved; from family members to police officers.

At the meeting, council passed recommendations that will see them writing to government ministers and experts as they seek assistance in forming the new strategy.

The council will seek the input of Dr Dina McMillan for the creation of the report as well as input from the head of the government’s new antiviolence agency Family Safety Victoria.

The council will also request a briefing from the government on the role of the Support and Safety Hubs that were proposed in the latest State budget.

The report presented to the council also out-

lined the cost, locations, and timeframe for the new banners and signage in the municipality originally proposed by Councillor Rex Flannery.

Council officers outlined in the report that a minimum of six weeks would be required to undertake the design, fabrication and installation of the anti-family violence banners.

For 156 banners and flags of varying sizes to be designed, printed and put up around the municipality on exiting banner and flag poles will cost about $27,300 and be covered by the current budget.

The council will develop the new family violence prevention strategy and accompanying action plan in the coming months.

Reliving the magic of Harry Potter More than 100 people delved into the magic of Harry Potter at Endeavour Hills Library to mark 20 years since the first book in the magic series was released.

Plain speaking for tenants New multilingual videos are explaining tenancy rights to new Victorians.

The State Government produced the video series in Arabic, Karen and Swahili for the growing Iraqi, Syrian, Myanmar and Congolese communities.

The languages reflect the top five countries of birth of people granted visas in Victoria.

The videos cover starting and ending a lease, bonds, repairs and condition reports.

Consumer Affairs Victoria partnered with refugee and migrant settlement agency AMES Australia to share the videos with their clients.

Aid in Mick’s parting gift

By Cam Lucadou-Wells and Bonny Burrows Mourners will be making a fitting tribute to longserving Casey and Berwick councillor Mick Morland who was so highly regarded for his unstinting community service.

Since his sudden death, mourners have been requested to donate to the philanthropic Casey Cardinia Foundation in lieu of flowers.

Floral tributes had been flooding in to the Morland family home after Mr Morland was fatally struck by a car on the Princes Highway, near Wilson Botanic Park, while he was out walking on 24 June.

His wife Kay Morland contacted Casey Cardinia Foundation executive officer Therese Howell and asked if the foundation would accept donations from mourners in lieu of flowers.

“Kay expressed that she felt it appropriate for any donations to benefit the community that Mick loved so dearly, through the Casey Cardinia Foundation,” Ms Howell said.

An array of community groups - football clubs and leagues, SES, Guides, Scouts, Rotary, Neighbourhood Watch, environment and church groups - have expressed their grief and shock about the horrifying news.

All spoke warmly of the husband, father and grandfather and his support for their causes.

Among his pet campaigns were a library in Hampton Park, a new track for Casey Little Athletics, an aquatic centre in Narre Warren and the Bunjil Place complex.

Casey Mayor Sam Aziz paid tribute to the “decades of dedication” from the seven-term councillor.

“He was easy to work with, he had his heart in the right place and he was compassionate - these are rare qualities these days, unfortunately. I’ve lost a dear friend, the community has lost a statesman.”

Cr Aziz lamented how Mr Morland could have lost his life during such a “benign, pleasant activity” as taking his routine evening walk to manage his type two diabetes.

Casey Council - which has lowered its flags to half-mast - will decide on a lasting tribute with Mr Morland’s family, Cr Aziz said.

“He was devoted to his wife, Kay, his children

Kay and Mick Morland. and his grandchildren, and our thoughts are with them as they grieve.”

Mr Morland is the second longest-serving Casey councillor, behind Wayne Smith, and stood as a Liberal candidate for State Parliament.

Mayors Jim Memeti of Greater Dandenong and Brett Owen of Cardinia, Victoria Police and a raft of politicians from several allegiances have paid tribute.

State Opposition Leader Matthew Guy described the Liberal life-member as “an institution in Casey, a great bloke with a heart of gold”.

Gembrook MP Brad Battin said he would be remembered for the many things he delivered for the community he loved for decades.

“All of the City of Casey will miss the man with that moustache,” he said. “Thanks Mick, you will be missed.”

When he received an Order of Australia Medal in January last year, he told Star News that all his years of service had made him realise how many people did not put their hands up to help the community.

“I always believed that if you want to be involved in your community you have to put in the time and effort,” he said.

And that’s what he had been doing since he took

on the presidency of a kindergarten in Narre Warren 30 years ago.

A passionate Tigers supporter, he was an Upper Beaconsfield premiership player and reserves coach, president of Narre Warren Junior Football Club and one of its coaches of the decade.

Rotary Club of Berwick President Mark Caulfield remembers his friend and fellow Rotarian as a generous man who gave his community his all.

A “reliable and hard-working” member of Rotary for 23 years, Mr Morland knew how to crack a joke, but was also known for his strong work ethic and tireless efforts in helping grow the ageing club.

He served on many Rotary committees, including a stint as president from 2012-13 He helped enter partnerships with Casey to provide picnic tables and the Rotary Rotunda in Pioneer Park, a rotunda in Buchanan Park and ongoing work with the Casey North Community Information and Support Service, the Australia Day festivities at Pioneer Park and the Carols by Candlelight celebrations in Berwick.

In 2009, Mr Morland was officially recognised for his Rotary commitments with the prestigious Paul Harris.

“He welcomed all new comers to the club and upheld the ideals of Rotary to do good in the world,” Mr Caulfield said.

There was also Mr Morland’s renowned “wicked sense of humour”.

Casey councillor Milla Gilic recalled this piece of golden advice from Mr Morland just after winning her seat on the council.

“See this Deputy Mayor medallion, they don’t tell ya, but just in case of emergency crisis, it’s actually gold foil wrapped chocolate!”

It would have only been dispensed days after Mr Morland had lost his own seat in November’s council elections.

Mr Morland is survived by wife Kay, children Ben, Luke, Rebecca and Brett and nine grandchildren. His funeral will be held at Berwick Church of Christ, Centre Road, Berwick, on Wednesday 5 July at 10.30am.

Casey bursting at the seams Casey has grown to the brink of 300,000 people - adding nearly 47,000 people in the past five years, according to 2016 Census data.

The reported population was 299, 301 for the Australian Bureau of Statistics census conducted on 9 August, though the survey was blighted by multiple cyber attacks and online crashes.

Casey’s rapid growth is reflected by the addition of 14,000 extra dwellings since 2011.

There are now more than 100,000 homes.

The municipality’s median age is also rising, up from 33 to 34 years.

This is still younger than the national population, which is on average 38 years old.

Weekly household income has risen (from $1342 to $1554), while monthly mortgage repayments are unchanged at $1733.

Median weekly rents however have risen from $295 to $340 - slightly higher than the national average.

A higher percentage of residents are renting (21.3 per cent) since 2011, though a significant majority own their homes or own them with a mortgage (75.3 per cent).

Nearly a quarter of households have three or more vehicles.

The top nominated ancestries are still English (19.3 per cent) and Australian (18.4 per cent), but Indian (5.9 per cent) has risen from fifth to third.

More than half of Casey’s residents are born in Australia, dipping from 61 per cent to 56 per cent. The next most common birthplaces are India, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, England and New Zealand.

More than half follow Christianity, though the most popular religion was ‘no religion’ (24.3 per cent).

It was followed by Catholic (23.9 per cent), ‘not stated’ (8 per cent), Anglican (7.9 per cent) and Islam (7.4 per cent).

5 July 1917 Dandenong Shire Council Mr W Cadle has applied for a piggery license on property situated in Hammond Road.

The provisions of the Health Act 1915 have been complied with and it was recommended that the application be granted - Adopted. *** A letter has been received from Mrs Symons asking for the tree in front of her property at Springvale to be removed - Left in the hands of the president. *** Geo Clark, Inspector, reported that Mr Woodcock and myself have been observing the crossings on Pt Nepean Rd and the wandering stock at Chelsea and Aspendale - Prosecuted offenders.

2 July 1967 Railway safety wrecked Safe working equipment on the line between Cranbourne and Kooweerup was put out of action by the theft of eight lengths of copper wire valued at $200 according to evidence in Dandenong Court last week.

Statements produced by the police told of raids after midnight on various quiet sections of track between Cranbourne and Traralgon where copper wire to the value of $938 was stolen.

20 years ago 7 July 1997 Just the ticket Greater Dandenong Council will extend parking time limits in Thomas Street to help strug-

gling traders.

The city’s group manager of residential amenity, Mr William Ryley, said last week he would extend parking in Thomas Street from one hour to two.

The traders, while pleased with the decision, will continue to lobby for free parking according to trader Mr Ken Hill of Playful Pets.

“We’d love to see all the parking meters ripped out,” he said.

“If the council is serious about helping traders in Thomas Street, it should make parking free and keep the major bus strip here.“ Mr Hill said Thomas Street traders were “outraged” by the council’s proposal to move the main bus stop to Dandenong Plaza.

“Everything is being done for the east side of Lonsdale Street and the west is still being neglected.

“But we are pleased the council has

moved to extend parking limits because we believe it will increase foot traffic.”

5 years ago 2 July 2012 Rugby helps teens stay right on track Sport’s transformative power has taken a Dandenong-based youth drug and alcohol service by surprise.

Young at-risk clients from Youth Support and Advocacy Service have soared due to help from a band of Melbourne Rebels rugby players.

In some cases the youngsters, who have substance abuse issues, have made two years of progress in a matter of months.

Some have started training twice a week and playing with Endeavour Hills Rugby Club and some have landed their first ongoing jobs.

Young pirates hooked into store The late Jack Johnson was the author of When the Clock Strikes, a fascinating account of growing up in Dandenong, his years tending to the city’s pipes and drains as a plumber and bringing up a family with wife Frances in their beloved home in Macpherson Street.

The double wooden door from the back storeroom at Old Patto’s Hay and Grain Store was directly in line with the front door to Lonsdale Street.

The reason for the extra width of this door into the storeroom was to allow for the carrying or wheeling of large bales and bags of stock feed and wheat.

Wooden framed iron-wheeled trolleys were pushed up the sloping ramp which joined the wide Baltic pine floor boards in the store to the gravel and bitumen footpath outside.

The Lonsdale Street doorway was set beneath a corrugated iron verandah and the parapet wall just below the large seed merchant sign.

BACK JACK JOHNSON on more hand adzed ironbark posts and separated from the roadway by a bluestone block gutter.

Horses were tethered to steel rings mounted on red gum and ironbark hitching posts at the footpath’s edge.

The heavy iron-wheeled trolleys carried bags of wheat, oats, maize and shellgrit to their customers’ waiting wagons.

From inside, and to the right of the door, the front window of the shop was a six-paned mullioned window of Baltic pine, stained with black creosote and set about three feet above footpath level.

The window was boxed-in to create a display area.

From outside, on the right side of the door was a small colonial barred window that let light into a small office, which had a floor for a ceiling that acted as a storage place above.

From Lonsdale Street when you entered the sales area, on your left was the display window, on your right was the small office.

Through the double doors at the back of this area was the storeroom and at the back of the storeroom was the wide sliding door onto the loading ramp outside.

On the right hand side of the door into the back storeroom stood large cast-iron platform scales for weighing bags of wheat and seeds.

It had a fancy cast-iron back for leaning the sacks against. This back was similar to the old bed ends and gates.

Because it weighed bags of produces in excess of a hundredweight, it was a beam balance type of scale.

Alongside the scales was a wooden bench with a couple of shelves beneath it.

This contained bundles of heavy brown paper bags used for smaller quantities of seed and chook food.

At the back edge of the bench top, on the lining board wall were wooden racks and boxes which contained balls of string and short pieces of hay band and cardboard luggage tags, for identifying what was in the bags and for whose order it was.

There were also large chaff bag needles for resewing the tops of bags.

Above these shelves hung various types of bag hooks, which had sharp points for gripping the bags or bales.

The single ones had a wooden handle and the double ones were all steel.

We used to hold the single one in our hand and pull our sleeve down and pretend we were Long John Silver or some other fearsome pirate as we stood at the top of the piled high bags of chaff or wheat in the back store.

Marketing the easy way to profits

By Rebecca Skilton It’s been said that Albert Einstein defined insanity as doing the same thing over and over again but expecting different results.

And according to a marketing expert, it’s this exact insanity that too many businesses apply to their strategic marketing plan.

Marketing strategist, creative writer and inspiring conference speaker Damian Morgan encouraged local business owners to be bold, precise and informed at business excellence seminars held by Star News Group at Dandenong's Drum Theatre on Tuesday 20 June and at the Waterman Centre in Victor Crescent, Narre Warren, recently.

He walked business owners through a marketing crash course covering the whos, the whats, the whens, the wheres and the whys of strategic marketing.

He said that marketing isn’t optional when seek-

ing business success.

Using examples of brands such as Tradie underwear and Workwear, Adidas, Nike and Lorna Jane, he stressed the importance of brand positioning, strongly encouraging businesses to have a firm understanding of their target audience.

He said that a good advertisement doesn’t appeal to everyone, but instead charms and hooks people that the products and services are aimed at.

“A bad ad costs the same as a good ad but the difference is bad ads don’t work,” he said.

“We think that advertising is telling people what we’re capable of which can be our biggest mistake but great advertising actually appeals to people’s hearts as well as their minds.

“Good ads don’t hook everyone, but they get far more than they would if they were watered down (to tailor for everyone).”

He encouraged business owners to target specific marketing seasons such as tax time, Christmas, sports seasons and seasons of the year and

|to tailor their advertising to the current market - or risk losing potential customers.

“At Christmas time, you’re competing with every present under the tree - if you don’t promote whatever it is you’ve got that could be a gift at Christmas you’re losing sales to everyone that is,” he said.

“You’ve got to make your product or service giftable. So many small businesses roll over and die in their off seasons but when you promote during the off season, you’re going to win where others won’t.

“And when you don’t have seasons, make them up.”

When it came to marketing and advertising platforms, he highlighted that the importance of local media outlets should never be overlooked and encouraged business owners to use their local newspapers to tap into the market in which they exist.

“If you want to know local news, politics and sports and about what’s happening in the local area, there isn’t many other sources than the local newspaper,” he said.

“The people reading those papers - they’re local.

From a commercial point of view, that should be music to your ears.

“Local newspapers should be the first cab off the rank, your base layer.

“You need to saturate the market in which you sit. If you do that, you’re much more likely to get a return from the people more likely to buy from you.”

Within local advertisements he encouraged businesses to use content space wisely, emphasising that ads work best when focused on one ‘hook’ and are tailored to suit the changing needs of individual seasons.

“You’re not going to fill the ad with the business’s whole story,” he said.

“Use the content space to say one thing - one compelling reason why somebody should give you a go.

“And try to scratch different itches once a month.”

Turnout for trades Hallam Senior College showed off its trade credentials with demonstrations and dinner.

The school showcased its Traditional Trades and Technology Sub School area to more than 100 guests at its second annual gala event on Wednesday 28 June. Facilities within the Trade Training Centre include beauty and hairdressing salons, an industrial hospitality kitchen, and auto, furniture, carpentry, plumbing and electrical workshops.

Student leaders from the school took parents and community members from local schools and employers on tours and gave presentations and demonstrations.

Head of Traditional Trades and Technology Scott Kirkby was thrilled with the turnout and participation in the event, which was designed to recognise student excellence in the area and have the community share in student success.

Gymnasts shine

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Three Casey gymnasts soared to great heights at an inaugural Special Olympics state competition.

Miles Green, who secured the second place, Curtis Damato, third, and Christopher Sizer, fourth, starred in routines on six apparatus during the Queen’s Birthday long weekend competition.

It was the first time that Gymnastics Victoria included a Special Olympic section in its state championships in Melbourne.

The three train at a weekly Access All Abilities program at YMCA Berwick and Endeavour Hills leisure centres.

Centre director Monica Ellis said the trio had come a long way since starting gymnastics.

“They have achieved so much and we couldn’t be more proud.”

Ms Ellis said the program taught children and adults with physical and intellectual disabilities in a “safe and inclusive atmosphere”.

The Rotary Club of Noble Park-Keysborough meeting on Thursday 22 June marked a milestone for the club.

President Ron Damon, tongue-in-cheek, announced that it was exactly 19,000 days since the club charter was signed, officially bringing it into being.

At the previous week’s meeting, the club was 52 years old to the day and celebrated with a cake.

The Irish family took advantage of the bounty system introduced to encourage free settlement in Australia after the shipment of convicts ended.

Large families were excluded from the system, so the Keys sent two of their children on the six-month boat journey and upon their arrival hit the water with the rest of the clan.

They were listed in the record books as agricultural labourers and servants - the highest paying professions in the bounty system - but there was evidence they could all read and had reasonable finances.

Ms Keys said this contradicted the labourer story.

“They Keys family were not behind in taking advantage when they saw it,” she laughed.

She’s concluded that Moodie Yallow was first referred to as Keysborough in 1852 but there was “no conclusive evidence” as to when it was renamed.

College is building for the future With a vision that ensures that Noble Park Secondary College is a 21st century learning community, the college is excited to announce the beginning of its $5 million building program.

Principal Pam Dyson said that the first of the school’s renovations began on the new senior centre in June and will provide a variety of university styled research and study spaces to maximise student learning.

“The senior centre will have provision to provide staff areas and offices for an assistant principal, student co-ordinators and careers counsellors that will provide accessibility and a clear line of vision for staff and students,” Mrs Dyson said.

“This well planned and modern facility will

provide our senior students with a positive learning environment.”

The college will also see a new art and technology building constructed as well as a year nine and 10 ‘intermediate hub’ and an external canopy to allow students to participate in outdoor activities.

“These new learning spaces will be set amongst landscape designed gardens which will provide encouragement for both students and staff to have a tranquil and peaceful learning setting,” Mrs Dyson said.

“The new buildings have been based upon our vision for our college to ensure that our students grow in their learning.

“Having such positive learning spaces intertwined will provide both explicit and collaborative learning for our students at Noble Park Secondary College.

“As the principal I know that we now provide a safe and nurturing environment and our teachers are committed to ensuring that they know their

students well and they teach to ensure that their students improve... so it is very exciting to know that their facilities will be up to date.”

As the second term of the school year draws to a close, many parents will soon be receiving an academic transcript of their child’s progress at school.

If you are one of those parents about to read your child’s report with eager anticipation; read on…

A couple of weeks ago, I was rummaging through some cardboard boxes in the garage at home. I found the usual suspects inside - broken toys, old birthday cards and long forgotten memories. I was just about to throw the boxes in the skip when I found one of my old school reports. I decided to keep it - not so much for the sake of nostalgia, but for my future generations to read. Turning each page instantly transported me back in time. It was fun at first, but I was soon recalling memories of childhood anxiety attacks, sleepless nights and a world of adolescent worry!

I think we can all remember receiving the occasional bad report card at school. Remembering the stress associated with completing relentless assessment tasks and failing the odd test isn’t a memory

most of us want to resurrect. I’m sure we can all remember a sleepless night before an exam or receiving a report that was worse than expected. Then there was the fear of bringing a bad report home to the parents. It was the ultimate nerve-wracking experience.

Although my work in class was above average, some teachers felt compelled to provide “improvement” feedback that consisted of ‘Could do better!’ or ‘Must try harder’. There was no accompanying elaboration about what it was that I could do better or in what field I could try harder. It just made me feel like I was dumb. Today, that sort of feedback goes against every good teaching pedagogical approach out there, but for the time, it was perfectly acceptable.

While much has been done in the past decade to ensure new teachers are providing good feedback to their students and differentiating their classroom curriculum, not much has changed in regards to assessment, exams, NAPLAN and achievement standards. There’s an argument to be made about assessment overload now! There seems to be more of it than ever before! Teachers and students are buried under it! The problem stems from a systemic and outdated belief that relentless testing is the way forward in education. In reality, it gives politicians the chance to label children and provides multi-billion dollar industries with multi-billions of dollars!

That means H&R Block ads on the TV and plenty of stock take and stock reduction sales at our favourite shops.

But it also brings with it some changes to legislation which will affect the housing market.

If you can remember the very first home buyers guide, it was in response to the State Government introducing stamp duty exemptions for first home buyers for property purchasers of up to $600,000. As of 1 July, that exemption commences for first home buyers entering land contracts and other contracts of sale for established properties.

I made the claim that this reactionary measure would not do as much as the State Government would hope for first home buyers. I believed and still believe that land developers will utilise the savings in stamp duty to effectively raise their prices.

This was and still is a ‘Captain Obvious’ prediction. Anyone who has bought or is seeking to buy land knows; regardless of a stamp duty reduction land prices are continuing to rise. I am no genius for pointing to that fact. The fundamental problem hasn’t been solved - the supply and quality of land

The last three to four years have seen a phenomenon in housing that previous generations did not experience; the price of land outstripping the cost of construction in the outer suburbs. It is ridiculous to think that product with over 1000 inputs could possibly cost less than a bit of dirt. Don’t be deceived just because building now costs less than purchasing land does not mean building is getting cheaper. The opposite applies - subcontractors and suppliers are continually raising prices to keep with the market. After all, the subbies out there may own a home, or may be looking to build one. They are just as impacted by the soaring prices of land as anybody else and they are simply doing what they can to ensure they keep up with the pace of inflation.

The State Government announced in May that it is going to create 17 new suburbs - of which only three are proposed in the South-Eastern corridor.

Put simply not enough is being done to help young buyers in the south east get access to affordable and decent land to put a house on. More needs to be done to increase supply and access of land. It is that simple.

As for my advice and guidance; those self-employed looking to buy a home Be organised! Don’t procrastinate getting your taxes done - get yourself together and lodge your returns within days of July commencing. Heed this advice now - you will thank me later!

MOTORING Loving their lifestyle choices The Block former contestants Dan and Dani, who share a love for the right vehicle for the right lifestyle, have joined forces with Berwick Mazda.

Since their success on the renovation TV series, Dan Reilly and Dani Wales have established their own design and construction business, Red Door Project.

Dan is now a fully qualified and certified master builder and continues to grace TV screens as The Blocks’ Foreman Dan. Dani is now a qualified interior stylist and co-host of Network Ten’s long running Healthy Homes Australia.

Through their work as Berwick Mazda Ambassadors, Dan and Dani have been able to share their passion for home design and innovation, choosing the latest CX-3 and BT-50 as their vehicles of choice.

“For me, the BT-50 is the ultimate workhorse that helps me get the job done,” Dan said.

“It carries a heavy load, has great steering and honestly feels like I’m driving a luxury vehicle.

SPORT Bounce back Burras aim for flag

By Nick Creely Everything is starting to click well and truly into place down at Keysborough, with the second placed Burras surging into premiership favouritism after a stunning month of football.

After a disappointing 2016 season - in which the Burras finished in the bottom four with a 7-11 record - they have sprung to life, and are now eyeing off their first flag since 1976.

Burras coach Matt Ferguson said that the turnaround of his proud club has come down to building a list that competes no matter the circumstances.

“We’re an extremely close group on and off field, and I guess getting a lot of guys back to the club has really helped this year, and some really handy recruits have helped too,” he said.

“Last year we got smashed with injury, and we have this year as well, but the difference probably is the depth to cover those guys.

“One big difference too is the introduction of line coaches - it has really added to the improvement of our players.”

Hot on the heels of the dominant Chelsea Heights Football Club - which sits atop the Division 2 ladder - the players simply can’t wait to test themselves against the Dees on 8 July.

“I think Chelsea Heights obviously deserve the mantle as premiership favourites - we think we’re in a bunch of teams that can compete for the flag, but until we beat Chelsea Heights we can’t lay claim to that tag,” he said.

“I’d be lying if I said we didn’t eye off the Round 13 clash with Chelsea Heights - it’s in our minds and we are really looking forward to that challenge.

“In this comp, however, if you’re 5 per cent off against any team you’re in trouble.”

Rangers call for Roberts to bring in a solid centre The Dandenong Basketball Association has announced that Tayla Roberts has signed with the Jayco Rangers for the 2017-18 WNBL season.

Roberts will join fellow AIS alumni Sara Blicavs, Carley Mijovic and Tessa Lavey on the 201718 Jayco Rangers squad, having all last played together in the 2010-11 WNBL season.

An established veteran centre at just 24 years of age, Roberts will bring a strong inside presence to a Jayco Rangers team filled with hot outside shooting.

Rangers coach Larissa Anderson was thrilled to hear that the 2010 Rookie of the Year award winner had signed with Dandenong for WNBL 2017-18, stating that she is looking forward to working with the young star on her development.

“It is fantastic to have Tayla on board with the Rangers for the upcoming season,” Anderson said.

“We have seen consistently what she is capable of at WNBL level over the last couple of seasons and will be a valuable contributor to the Rangers front court, complementing the rest of our group really well.”

Roberts is known throughout the league as a strong post-player and fans got a first-hand preview of what she will bring to the Jayco Rangers last year when she visited Dandenong Stadium with Adelaide.

Bringing that same brilliance and passion for the game consistently is something Roberts is looking to grab hold of with the Jayco Rangers and, in particular, with head coach Larissa Anderson.

“I had a couple of years where I kind of just plateaued and was no longer enjoying my basketball,” Roberts said.

“But over the past 12 months I have really regained my love for the sport and have made some big improvements to my game.

“I feel that joining the Jayco Rangers will really push me further down that path - they have a great culture and feel about them.

“You look at the team and coaching staff and see what amazing chemistry and comradery they all have, it’s definitely a big selling point for me.

“I have great friends on the team and Larissa is an amazing coach, I think she’s really going to help take my game to the next level.”

“Our tackling has also been exceptional this year - we’re regularly getting 80 or more tackles each week and that’s been a real focus.

“But the biggest improvement in our game has probably been our two-way running from our mids - it’s really benefiting us and our forwards.”

One of the great features of the Burras in 2017 has been the return of former AFL player and NFL punter, Chris Bryan.

The 35-year-old, who played the majority of his 46 game AFL career in the ruck for Carlton and Collingwood, is dominating in a ruck-forward role at his junior club becoming an unstoppable presence around the ground.

“He is clearly the best player in the competition, no doubt about it,” Ferguson declared.

“Interestingly, Chris is kicking more goals when it’s coinciding with him spending more time in the ruck - I think that’s helped his game overall because he’s been able to get more clear around the ground - he is getting high 20 possessions and a lot of goals and hit-outs.”

Add star players Tim Werner, Ryan Goodes, Geoff Humphrey, Jack Cole, Riet Pal and Karl Schoenmaekers to the mix and it’s little wonder the Boroughs are flying.

And maybe 2017 is finally the year they hold the cup aloft in premiership glory.

Training squad whittled down

Cricket Victoria has announced both the Country and Metro Under-17 phase two squads following the first phase of training over June.

After conducting many training sessions at the MCG and Maribyrnong College, the two squads tested the skills, game sense and strength and conditioning of players, as well as providing valuable nutritional information and mental skills workshops.

The Metro squad has now been reduced to 26, with seven products of the Dandenong area making the cut.

The phase two squad will now undertake further skill development activities at the ’G under the guidance of professional coaches as well as play a string of trial matches across July and August.

Some of the local Dandenong District Cricket Association kids selected in the phase two squad are: Ashley Chandrasinghe (Southern Pioneers), Nivin Sathyajith (Southern Pioneers), Triyan De Silva (Southern Pioneers), Dulnath Hendawitharana (Southern Pioneers), Nathan Munasinghe (Southern Pioneers), Jakob Woinarski (South East Bayside Breakers) and Yash Pednekar (Southern Pioneers).

Yash, a talented all-rounder from North Dandenong Cricket Club, will continue to train with the Metro squad, but has been selected to represent the Australian Under 16-squad.

He has also been playing with the Monash Tigers in the Victorian Premier Cricket competition, impressing with his cricket smarts and all-round abilities.

Final squads will be announced in midAugust ahead of the Cricket Australian Under-17 National Championships in the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane from 25 September to mid-October.

Cobras say the only way is up

By Nick Creely Embattled, but not broken - there is no better way to encapsulate the Sandown Cobras Football Club.

It has been battered and bruised throughout what has been a tough old 2017 season, losing by 100 points or more almost a dozen times so far.

But, believe it or not, the proud club is heading in the right direction on and off-field with chairman Zain Machfud one of many who are helping to rebuild Edinburgh Reserve from the ground up, albeit slowly - and there first senior flag since 1997 may not be as far away as people think.

“The vibe around the club is fantastic, actually.

“Those heavy losses aren’t really a true test of our character - the results in the last few weeks and the win against Dandenong - has really got the spirits up around the club.

“While we’ve had some tough moments on field, the boys are responding well and are really behind the club,” Machfud said.

“We’ve put in some processes off-field - we had a trivia night recently that had over 100 people which hasn’t been seen for a number of years while there is plenty of work to be done, we are heading in the right direction and are united, which is fantastic.

“We are laying the foundations this year for a real launch next year.

“We’ve got a great core group of 20-25 players that are really driving the direction of the club. We did have some dramas earlier in the season getting a reserves side up and going but we did that.”

On 17 June - up against the Dandenong Redlegs - the Cobras had one of their most memorable days in years, winning by six-points in a nail-biter.

“It was a fantastic week for us - our netballers had a win, our reserves also won and then the seniors backed it up, it was such a relief.

“We also have an all-abilities team, and they’re undefeated so far, so it was brilliant - very exciting,” Machfud said.

The Sandown Cobras are rebuilding their proud club. 154246 Machfud, who has played 112 senior games for his club, believes the improvement is there to see, heaping praise on new senior coach Ange Sammaratino.

“We couldn’t be happier with Ange and all our coaches, really, from Matt McMormick coaching the reserves, Phil Dickson as his assis-

tant and Phil Foster as senior assistant.

“Ange has been fantastic in terms of motivating the boys, he has a great connection with the lads.

“While on field hasn’t been pretty at times in terms of the final result, the boys have taken on board what he is teaching them,” he said.

“We’re focusing on continuous improvement,

Bulls bound for a double chance

Late winner leaves sluggish City with the three points

By Nick Creely NPL REVIEW - ROUND 21 Dandenong City survived a sluggish start to cruise away to a 2-1 victory over Moreland City on Friday night.

The ladder leading City, coming into the game as one of the most in-form teams in the competition - arguably the state - were heavy favourites.

In a blockbuster clash, City couldn’t get their game up and going for the first 40 minutes, before Shaun Filipovic finally found the back of the net.

But Moreland answered almost immediately, with Trent Rixon bringing the house down with a massive goal just after half time to level the scores.

And in a tense last 30 minutes, City’s Nick Kalmar converted from a red card penalty in the 90th minute to hand his side victory.

City travels to Dunstan Reserve on Saturday to tackle Brunswick City FC in another massive clash.

Down at Morshead Park Stadium, it was always going to be a tough challenge, but the Thunder rose to the occasion, keeping itself within reach of its crosstown rivals.

Star striker Brandon Barnes then put on an almighty show with a double strike - leaving the Thunder 3-0 within the first 20 minutes of game play.

Luckily for Bendigo, the Thunder slowed down considerably, with Jordan Seeto the next to score in the second half.

The Thunder are at home on Saturday night as they host Werribee City.

Meanwhile, Springvale White Eagles registered an impressive 3-1 victory over Melbourne Victory at Epping Stadium.

The Eagles scored in the 13th minute via Isaiah Joseph, before Victory squared the ledger in the 56th minute.

But two quick goals late in the contest ensured the Eagles would taste victory.

The Eagles get the perfect chance to back up their victory when they host Bendigo City at home on Saturday afternoon - kick off at 3pm.

11.15(81), Sandown 3.10(28) went down by 98-points to Black Rock 18.13(121), Dandenong 8.8(56) fought hard against Moorabbin 14.18(102), and Lyndhurst 14.8(92) bounced back with an impressive away victory against Carrum Patterson Lakes 10.4(64).

Things are beginning to heat up in the finals race, with Lyndale perhaps the only team outside the top six capable of doing much damage.

In a dominant first quarter at the Bullring, the Bulls didn’t quite have their kicking boots on having 11 scoring shots but only managing 5.6.

However, once the kicking straightened up in the second, the Bulls feasted on the lackluster ‘Roos, pounding them into submission like good teams do.

James Gwilt (four goals) found his spark up forward, Tim Harper (four goals) continues to find the goals and is now up to 24 for the season, and Jackson Sketcher was outstanding with his run and carry, and slick ball use.

Meanwhile, Rowville 14.7(91) got the better of Montrose 11.11(77), with star Jake Dermott best afield for the Hawks.
