Jobs up in the air A Bangholme produce market that could generate 200 jobs got the green light from Greater Dandenong councillors - but immediately arrived at a stop sign.

Councillors approved the DandyFresh development for green wedge-zoned land in Harwood Road at their Monday 26 June council meeting, six votes to two.

But Cr Matthew Kirwan, who voted against the proposal with Cr Loi Truong, lodged a rescission motion that will bring the matter back to the Monday 10 July meeting.

He’ll ask councillors to take back their decision and re-debate the application in the hope they will reject it this time around.

“The officer’s report provided flimsy justification and special treatment for a large-scale commercial food enterprise that should be in an industrial zone, not a green wedge zone,” Cr Kirwan said.

“Does a 5000 square metre sterilisation facility sound like rural industry to anyone in this chamber?

“Does 8700 square metres of warehousing?”

He said the applicant was taking advantage of cheap land.

Even if the council’s decision stands, DandyFresh will have another battle on its hands.

Defenders of the South East Green Wedge vowed to take the matter to VCAT. Secretary Barry Ross said the council’s own policy said the green wedge should “provide a green, spacious relief from surrounding urban development”.

“Its buildings, roads, and internal carparks would cover 16.5 hectares, which is more than eight times the area of the playing surface of the MCG,” he said.

“If this application is approved it would set a precedent for more such large scale development

that would transform the green wedge into an urban commercial precinct.”

Bangholme resident Alan Hood wrote to the Journal with his objections to the application.

“A market is a permissible use in the green wedge zone, but is limited to 50 square metres,” he said.

“The intent is that a farmer can use this area to sell his produce.”

DandyFresh CEO Rod Kerley said the development was appropriate in the green wedge and he was “happy to go to VCAT”.

Hoseah born free to sing

By Casey Neill Hoseah Partsch cried when he realised he’d miss the Dandenong High School house choral competition.

It was a place in The Voice grand finale that kept the Cranbourne West 18-year-old away from the Tuesday 27 June event.

He was due to perform on stage with coach Boy George as one of the final four singers in the Channel Nine talent competition on Sunday 2 July.

“I’m a house captain. I was so gutted because it’s my last year at Dandenong High School,” he said.

“The chorals is my favourite part of the year.

“To not be there is the saddest thing in my life.

“My fellow house captain Britney, she called me up and told me we won.

“That made me cry even more.”

But Hoseah could not find the words to express how grateful he is to his school, friends, family and the public for supporting him through this months-long journey.

“Thank you is not enough,” he said.

“I’ll be so happy whether I win or not.

“I feel like the show has given me a boost in my music career and grown me to be a bigger artist.

“I just want to thank Australia for getting me this far in the competition and believing I am good enough to perform for them.”

Hoseah’s final performance on the Voice could earn him $100,000 in cash and a recording contract with Universal Music Australia.

“I’m not really worried what the outcome will be,” he said.

“I really, really, really want to win this competition but I feel like a winner already.”

He said his duet with Boy George would be a

special moment for him, and said he’d learnt a lot from the industry legend.

“I came to the show as a very shy person,” he said.

“Boy, he’s brought out another Hoseah. I just feel like I’m a fresh Hoseah.

“Every Sunday I’m just so pumped to come out on the stage and give it my all.

“Before, I was always shaking in the back.”

Hoseah auditioned for the show to help his family.

“I’m a little disappointed that we weren’t asked to sit down with Cr Kirwan and Cr Truong.

“We worked really closely with the councillors at Dandenong.”

Mr Kerley said that within two years there’d be a population larger than Adelaide’s in the area that the market would service.

“It’s nowhere near as big as (the Melbourne Wholesale Market in) Epping, it’s not meant to replace Epping, it’s just to service a market for both growers and retailers in a fairly localised area,” he said.

“As time goes on, the people who use the market will be offered equity positions within the management.

“Ultimately it will be a market owned by the users and run by the users.”

Intrapac Property managing director David Payes said Intrapac was a joint venture partner with some investors on the land and also an investor in DandyFresh.

“It will contribute more than 200 jobs into that Dandenong area,” he said.

Mr Payes said Cr Kirwan was serving “a political agenda” and that Intrapac was “a bit blindsided by his decision, he hasn’t been in touch”.

“It’s a legitimate use of the land and a good use that meets the needs of agriculture and business,” he said.

“We’ve had a rough lifestyle growing up, my mum being a single parent with four kids,” he said.

He was born in New Zealand and moved to Australia in 2011.

“I’ve been singing since I was very young. It started back in church,” he said.

“I had a lot of family members who were professional musicians.

“When I sing I feel free.”

In Brief Most parents born overseas More than three quarters of Greater Dandenong residents have parents who were both born overseas - more than double the Australian average.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics revealed the 76.4 per cent figure as part the results of last year’s census on Tuesday 27 June.

They revealed that 34.4 per cent of Australians said both of their parents were born overseas.

In Greater Dandenong, 11.9 per cent of residents were born to two parents who were born in Australia, compared to 47.3 per cent Australiawide.

Only 35.8 per cent of people in the municipality were born in Australia, compared to 66.7 per cent of Victorians.

Vietnam, India, Cambodia, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan were the most common birthplaces outside of Australia.

The average Greater Dandenong resident is 35 years old - slightly lower than Australia’s average of 38 - and there is 2.9 people in their household.

Just over 19 per cent of residents are Catholic, while 16.9 per cent registered as non-religious, 14.8 per cent as Buddhist and 12.5 per cent as Muslim.

In Keysborough, 14.6 per cent of people have Chinese ancestry, while in Dandenong 9.9 per cent have Afghan heritage.

English ancestry is the most common in Noble Park, at 10.6 per cent, and Vietnamese leads the way in Springvale with 21.2 per cent.

Median weekly personal incomes also differ greatly from suburb to suburb, from $580 in Keysborough to $483 in Noble Park, $460 in Dandenong and $409 in Springvale.

New boss after resignation Greater Dandenong Council has a new community services director.

Mark Doubleday resigned from the role in March this year.

At the Monday 26 June council meeting, Martin Fidler was revealed as his replacement.

The council’s CEO, John Bennie, said there was an extensive recruitment process and candidates with a high level of skills and experience in the complex community services sector were invited to apply.

Mr Fidler was the council’s community wellbeing manager and was the acting community services director for 12 weeks.

“He is a highly skilled professional who brings with him a wealth of experience and knowledge,” Mr Bennie said.

Amber Alert toddler is safe

“Many agricultural producers have very large warehouses on their facilities.”

Mr Payes said the idea was to tap into southeast producers.

“It’s a fairly simple equation. Epping’s a long

way from Dandenong,” he said.

Cr Sean O’Reilly said the facility would allow local growers to compete with those from overseas and meet growing demand from population growth.

A toddler who went missing from Springvale sparked Victoria Police’s first Facebook Amber Alert.

On Friday 23 June police appealed for help to find Milena Malkic, 2, who was last seen in Springvale on Thursday 15 June.

They believed she might be with her parents Nadia Malkic and Joshua Coates.

The pair attended the Dandenong police station with a safe and well Milena on Saturday 24 June.

The Amber Alert system was launched nationally on Thursday 22 June.

It pushes child abduction alerts into a Facebook user’s news feed if they are in the same area as the missing child.

The system is only activated when a child is thought to be at risk of death or serious injury.

eBay sales helped thief make $500k from boss

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A man has been jailed for stealing and on-selling more than $500,000 of electrical products from his Dandenong South employer.

New Zealand-born Michael Levy, 43, faces likely deportation after completing his jail term of up to three years.

The thefts over an 18-month period in 2013-14 were large value, systematic and organised, Judge Jane Patrick said during sentencing in the Victorian County Court on 20 June.

Judge Patrick said each heist must have been a relatively small amount to avoid detection

As part of his job at Schneider Electric’s distribution centre, Levy scanned barcodes, stacked pallets and picked customer orders.

On the side, he smuggled away stock such as cabling and electric switches into his ute. The items were stored in two hired storage units and sold either directly or via eBay. Levy used some of his $536,515 of proceeds to buy a silver Commodore SS as well as partly to pay gambling debts.

Judge Patrick noted, however, that the thefts continued even after he stopped gambling.

She accepted Levy suffered severe clinical depression at the time.

However the targeted choice of high-value items were decisions made by a rational man, she said.

Levy’s rehabilitation prospects were considered good. He had pleaded guilty early, had no relevant prior history and used his volunteer fire-fighter skills to rescue a person. He was taking steps to rehabilitation through frequent psychiatric therapy.

Judge Patrick also took into account that Levy would be anxious about being deported to New Zealand where he no longer had family ties.

Levy pleaded guilty to two charges of theft and a charge of dealing with property which was suspected to be proceeds of crime.

He will be jailed for a minimum of 20 months.

In Brief Hunt on for bike trail flasher A man exposed himself to a father and his 10-year-old son on a Dandenong South bike trail.

Police are appealing for public help to identify the man and have released a photo of a man who may be able to assist with their inquiries.

Police have been told that the victims were riding along the EastLink trail next to Dandenong Creek about 4.30pm on Sunday 18 June.

A man was lying on the track in full view of the public, exposing himself and performing a lewd act.

The victim approached and challenged the man.

He got on his bike and rode away, but not before the victim took his photo.

He was described as aged in his late forties to early fifties and 175 centimetres tall with a medium build and pointy nose. He spoke with a European accent.

Man faces robberies charge Police have charged a Frankston man over a string of south-east armed robberies that kicked off in Dandenong South.

The 29-year-old allegedly tried to run from Frankston Embona Taskforce detectives when they visited an address in Tamarisk Drive, Frankston North, to make inquiries about the robberies.

They arrested him and interviewed him about incidents in Dandenong South, Braeside, Carrum Downs, Frankston and Baxter in the past month.

The first incident was at a cafe in Abbotts Road on Saturday 10 June and allegedly involved a man entering the eatery’s rear armed with a knife and hammer and demanding cash and cigarettes.

The man faced an out-of-sessions hearing and was charged with armed robbery and burglary.

Police also found the silver Nissan Navara they were looking for and thanked the public for their assistance.

Te Hononga O Nga Iwi captures the attention of market visitors.

Festive market crowds get connected to Kiwi culture More than 23,000 people flocked to Dandenong Market for a taste of New Zealand culture.

The Matariki Festival on Sunday 25 June marked Maori New Year, a time to connect with and give thanks to the land, sea and sky.

Matariki is the Maori name for the Pleiades star cluster, which rises in early June.

Cultural group Te Hononga O Nga Iwi performed the haka and other dances, and its children’s group, Nga Whetu Marama O Hawaiki, also took to the stage.

Te Ara Hononga performed traditional Maori martial art Mau rakau and hip hop group The Kingdom brought Maori and Polynesian flavour to Market Square.

The day’s 23,504 visitors were also able to try traditional food including hungi, mussel fritters, fried bread burgers and more.

Young at-risk clients from Youth Support and Advocacy Service have soared due to help from a band of Melbourne Rebels rugby players.

In some cases the youngsters, who have substance abuse issues, have made two years of progress in a matter of months.

Some have started training twice a week and playing with Endeavour Hills Rugby Club and some have landed their first ongoing jobs.

Young pirates hooked into store The late Jack Johnson was the author of When the Clock Strikes, a fascinating account of growing up in Dandenong, his years tending to the city’s pipes and drains as a plumber and bringing up a family with wife Frances in their beloved home in Macpherson Street.

The double wooden door from the back storeroom at Old Patto’s Hay and Grain Store was directly in line with the front door to Lonsdale Street.

The reason for the extra width of this door into the storeroom was to allow for the carrying or wheeling of large bales and bags of stock feed and wheat.

Wooden framed iron-wheeled trolleys were pushed up the sloping ramp which joined the wide Baltic pine floor boards in the store to the gravel and bitumen footpath outside.

The Lonsdale Street doorway was set beneath a corrugated iron verandah and the parapet wall just below the large seed merchant sign.

BACK JACK JOHNSON on more hand adzed ironbark posts and separated from the roadway by a bluestone block gutter.

Horses were tethered to steel rings mounted on red gum and ironbark hitching posts at the footpath’s edge.

The heavy iron-wheeled trolleys carried bags of wheat, oats, maize and shellgrit to their customers’ waiting wagons.

From inside, and to the right of the door, the front window of the shop was a six-paned mullioned window of Baltic pine, stained with black creosote and set about three feet above footpath level.

The window was boxed-in to create a display area.

From outside, on the right side of the door was a small colonial barred window that let light into a small office, which had a floor for a ceiling that acted as a storage place above.

From Lonsdale Street when you entered the sales area, on your left was the display window, on your right was the small office.

Through the double doors at the back of this area was the storeroom and at the back of the storeroom was the wide sliding door onto the loading ramp outside.

On the right hand side of the door into the back storeroom stood large cast-iron platform scales for weighing bags of wheat and seeds.

It had a fancy cast-iron back for leaning the sacks against. This back was similar to the old bed ends and gates.

Because it weighed bags of produces in excess of a hundredweight, it was a beam balance type of scale.

Alongside the scales was a wooden bench with a couple of shelves beneath it.

This contained bundles of heavy brown paper bags used for smaller quantities of seed and chook food.

At the back edge of the bench top, on the lining board wall were wooden racks and boxes which contained balls of string and short pieces of hay band and cardboard luggage tags, for identifying what was in the bags and for whose order it was.

There were also large chaff bag needles for resewing the tops of bags.

Above these shelves hung various types of bag hooks, which had sharp points for gripping the bags or bales.

The single ones had a wooden handle and the double ones were all steel.

We used to hold the single one in our hand and pull our sleeve down and pretend we were Long John Silver or some other fearsome pirate as we stood at the top of the piled high bags of chaff or wheat in the back store.

Traders fear break-ins, ward crime forum hears

By Casey Neill Springvale traders are anxious about break-ins, a crime forum has heard.

Greater Dandenong Lightwood Ward councillors Sean O’Reilly, Loi Truong and Youhorn Chea hosted the Lightwood Ward Community Safety Forum at the former council chambers on Wednesday 28 June.

Also in attendance were Keysborough MP and Attorney-General Martin Pakula, other councillors, MPs Inga Peulich and Hong Lim and Greater Dandenong Local Area Commander Inspector Mark Langhorn.

Cr O’Reilly said about 10 members of the public attended.

“We had quite a few Springvale traders and they were talking about the number of burglaries,

shop burglaries,” he said.

“One in particular ... she was saying they had two break-ins.

“She said she was really anxious about another one happening.”

He said Springvale Asian Business Association’s (SABA) Daniel Cheng was there, as was Greater Dandenong Neighbourhood Watch president Dawn Vernon.

“I don’t think we had even one question around people’s safety in their homes, actually,” Cr O’Reilly said.

“It was more around the traders.

“We really had about five questions, six questions.”

Cr O’Reilly asked why there weren’t more multicultural and multilingual police officers in Springvale.

“There’s a huge recruitment going on in the police at the moment,” he said.

He also asked about the technology available to police and suggested it should be improved.

“There’s no database where the emergency services can share information,” he said.

“Police are still using paper. That was acknowledged, that the police should have iPads.”

Insp Langhorn said he understood that traders wanted to see more police.

“That’s one of my agendas, to try to increase the visibility of police and the access of traders to police with the resources I have,” he said.

“Today had people out on foot patrol as a response, meeting traders.

“Crime has gone down in Springvale with the March statistics and it’s continuing to track down.”

Letters Council looks after itself I’m writing to you regarding Dandenong council and their false promises.

On 2 December 2016 it was reported in the Dandenong Journal about how Avocare (an organisation that was situated in Menzies avenue Dandenong North and helped every Wednesday to give food hampers and meals to the needy in our community) was looking for somewhere else to house its service, as the current building needed a new grease trap, that would cost $60,000 to repair and they couldn’t afford it.

They were seeking a new place to open up so they could still help the community.

In January I wrote to Jim Memeti asking him what was happening with helping Avocare find a place and also let him know that if he had cut a couple of minutes off the New Year fireworks display then they would have been able to help Avocare by repairing the grease trap.

All I got back was his ‘condolences’ that I was struggling and him saying that the council was helping find a new place.

As to date, Avocare are still in limbo. I attend Menzies Avenue shops every second week and noticed that they (Avocare) have opened up an Op-shop there to which now I am a regular.

When speaking with staff there, they were disappointed in the council’s lack of action to help their charity.

What really bugs me is the fact that only last month the councillors voted themselves a pay rise. How greedy. It just goes to show they care more about themselves then they do about the people who elected them.

Those same people that are struggling weekto-week, the same people that used the Avocare service. I’m on a disability support pension and would work at the drop of a hat if I was able to. Avocare’s service helped make it easier to provide food for my daughter and myself. But without this service we are really, really, really struggling. At the start of the year my rent, electricity and gas costs went up and now six months later and it has happened again.

I can guarantee that it’s not just my costs going up, but everyone’s is.

Jim Memeti made promises and yet cannot get off his backside to help ‘his’ community but will happily take our money.

Police, sheriff move in and visibly clean up at station

By Casey Neill Sheriff ’s officers recovered $78,000 in unpaid fines during a blitz on Dandenong Railway Station.

They joined with transit police and uniformed police officers from Dandenong for Operation Safe Station on Monday 26 June.

Greater Dandenong Local Area Commander Inspector Mark Langhorn said authorised officers checked the tickets of more than 1200 passengers coming and going from the Foster Street station.

They detected 61 breaches of the Transport Act. “The sheriff ’s officers spoke to 15 people and recovered in excess of $78,000 worth of outstanding infringements,” Insp Langhorn said.

“They’re talking to the same people we’re talking to. While we’re talking to them they’re running their details in their records.

“We piggy-backed off each other and helped each other.”

He said police arrested two people, one for possessing drugs and knives.

“The other was a mental health arrest and they were taken to hospital,” he said.

Insp Langhorn said police checked trains, buses and vehicles and searched a few people for weapons.

“We’ll be back down there again in the future, trying to be visible and making people accountable if they’ve had outstanding fines and chasing them up,” he said.

“The Dandenong transport hub is something the community uses and we want to make it as safe as possible.”

A Dandenong robbery victim suffered a gash to his face near his left eye from a punch to the face.

A passer-by called police after spotting the 27-year-old man in distress at the intersection of McCrae and Walker streets about 10.55pm on Saturday 24 June.

Police arrived to find the man bleeding from his face.

The victim told them a man approached him and asked for a cigarette, and he replied that he didn’t have one. The attacker threatened to kill him, demanded money and punched him to the face, knocking the victim to the ground. He stole cash and a mobile phone and ran up McCrae Street.

Police urged any witnesses or anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Nest boxes for wildlife

In Brief Car criminals to be bounced

Dandenong West students gave native animals a legup on the housing front. They built nest boxes for various creatures and installed them at Fotheringham Reserve in Dandenong on Thursday 22 June.

Dandenong West Primary School teacher Simone Mensen said the kids visited the reserve in the lead-up, often surveying the area for birds, healthy trees and logs, and bug life diversity.

“They then built a nesting box for a native Australian animal,” she said.

“At school they researched about the native Australian animals that live at the park, and threats to those animals, such as introduced species.

“Our goal was for students to learn more about the native animals that live at Fotheringham Reserve, and what they can do to preserve and protect the environment to save and protect native plants and animals.”

Ms Mensen said the project was an opportunity for students to learn about a local area.

“They learnt about issues such as sustainability and about how the park has changed over time, and how this has changed the biodiversity of the site,” she said.

“They thoroughly enjoyed building the nesting boxes, seeing them up in the trees, and researching about native Australian animals, particularly birds and micro-bats.”

Operation Bounce Back is part of a new push to cut car theft.

Greater Dandenong Council has joined forces with the National Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council to fund the new public awareness campaign about the role car owners can play in preventing auto crime.

Statistics show that 75 per cent of cars stolen were taken from driveways, garages and outside the owner’s property.

Greater Dandenong Mayor Jim Memeti said preventing car theft required a whole-of-community approach.

“By encouraging our residents to take precautions to protect their vehicles, including always locking your car and never leaving your keys in your car, we hope we can achieve an overall reduction in car theft in our community,” he said.

Operation Bounce Back will be launched at Dandenong Market from 10am to 2pm on Tuesday 27 June.

Two additional public information sessions will be held at Dandenong Plaza from 10am to 4pm on Saturday 8 July, and outside Coles Supermarket on Douglas Street, Noble Park, from 10am to 2pm on Tuesday 18 July.

Flagged down driver flees A driver pretended to pull over for police on EastLink in Noble Park North before fleeing from them on the wrong side of the road.

The officers tried to intercept the Mitsubishi Lancer for traffic offences about 2.20am on Tuesday 27 June.

Greater Dandenong CIU Detective Sergeant Dean Hedge said the driver slowed down in the emergency lane, and police believed they were going to get out of the car.

The officers exited their car, and the driver “took off at a fast rate of speed”.

Det Sgt Hedge said that the Lancer crossed onto the wrong side of the road on Wellington Road at one point, driving into oncoming traffic.

Police did not engage a pursuit. No one was injured.

Passion to sing

By Casey Neill Dandenong High School students with a passion for song could lend their voices to a national choir concert.

Alex Lewis is a teacher at the school and the Melbourne Intervarsity Choral Festival external convenor.

The event has brought together choirs from universities around Australia for the past 70 years, and will next January come to Melbourne Town Hall with a full symphonic orchestra and the southern hemisphere’s second largest pipe organ.

For the first time, high school students will have the opportunity to take part - including those who performed in Dandenong High’s annual House Chorals on Tuesday 27 June.

Ms Lewis assisted with the event, held in the school’s Martin Culkin Theatre.

Leaders from the seven houses chose one of five set songs, all by Australian artists, plus a second song of their choice.

Grevillea House won with its performance of Never Tear Us Apart by INXS and Sing by YouTube acapella group Pentatonix.

Captain Britney, 17, had a tough time without

co-captain Hoseah, who was unable to attend after making the grand finale of television singing contest The Voice.

“I had to hold down the group for him as well as try to encourage the kids,” she said.

“Most of them were very young so they were shy.

“We had to get them comfortable with their own thing.

“He was on the phone the whole time listening. I wish he was there.”

They only selected Sing a week out from the event.

“We didn’t have that much rehearsal,” Britney said.

“Everyone was so committed.

“Their passion for music was there and that’s all we needed.

“I look at each and every one of the Grevilleans as family.

“It wasn’t because of me that they won, but because of each and every one of their commitment.”

Britney loves to sing and hopes to become a music teacher.

Preschoolers from Springside Kindergarten Centre shared their ideas in a new State Government video for the public open space that will be created by removing several level crossing.

But the aww-inducing video was compared to North Korean-style propaganda.

“This is like the North Korean education system, only counting trains and elevated sky rail gantries not tanks,” he said.

The Rotary Club of Noble Park-Keysborough meeting on Thursday 22 June marked a milestone for the club.

President Ron Damon, tongue-in-cheek, announced that it was exactly 19,000 days since the club charter was signed, officially bringing it into being.

At the previous week’s meeting, the club was 52 years old to the day and celebrated with a cake.

Mr Damon shared a few more figures dur-

ing the evening - “Ronny does love stats” including that Pam Naylor was to be inducted as the club’s 182nd member at its following meeting during the same year that Melbourne turned 182 years old.

Chris Keys is the sixth generation of the Keys family to call their namesake suburb home.

The Dandenong and District Historical Society president was also the guest speaker at the Thursday 22 June Rotary Club of Noble Park-Keysborough meeting.

The Irish family took advantage of the bounty system introduced to encourage free settlement in Australia after the shipment of convicts ended.

Large families were excluded from the system, so the Keys sent two of their children on the six-month boat journey and upon their arrival hit the water with the rest of the clan.

They were listed in the record books as agricultural labourers and servants - the highest paying professions in the bounty system - but there was evidence they could all read and had reasonable finances.

Ms Keys said this contradicted the labourer story.

“They Keys family were not behind in taking advantage when they saw it,” she laughed.

She’s concluded that Moodie Yallow was first referred to as Keysborough in 1852 but there was “no conclusive evidence” as to when it was renamed.

Violence marks disputes

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Family violence is so common in family law disputes that its absence is now a “matter for comment”, according to a family law judge.

“I can say with confidence that family violence is the core business,” Judge Judy Small told a gathering to celebrate a pilot program to house family violence services at Dandenong family law court registry.

“It’s a matter for comment when there’s no family violence alleged.”

Her observations showed the need for the federal program Family Advocacy and Support Services (FASS) - which allows victims and perpetrators to be literally walked from the court into the offices of social workers.

The key goal is to keep families and children safe.

The survivors of family violence - mainly women and children - are assisted in a complex knot of problems.

Duty lawyers help with the legal issues, social workers assist with safety plans and finding alternative accommodation for victims.

The perpetrators are guided into men's behavioural change and parenting programs, perhaps on a path to regaining access to their kids.

Judge Small said FASS was a welcome initiative, to have social scientists and lawyers working together.

There had been much progress, but family violence was still not widely understood, she said.

There was the misguided notion that a man

could be an abusive partner but a good dad, for example.

Children who witness this abuse could suffer lifelong consequences, Judge Small said.

“The fact that it happens in the home is the real affront to me.

“It happens in a place where we should feel safest on this earth, where we feel safest, supported and loved.

“The betrayal of trust when family violence occurs ... it’s extremely difficult to rebuild.”

FASS teams duty lawyers from Victoria Legal Aid and Peninsula Community Legal Centre with social workers from WAYSS and Relationships Australia.

The pilot, which started on 1 May, runs for about two years.

In Brief Chipping in to fight gambling Greater Dandenong Council will chip in $25,000 to help tackle problem gambling. Councillors approved the contribution to the Alliance for Gambling Reform at their Tuesday 13 June meeting.

Councillor Matthew Kirwan said Greater Dandenong residents lost $119 million to electronic gaming machines in 2015-16 - $326,000 a day and the highest average loss per adult in Victoria.

“About 15 per cent of users of electronic gaming machines are problem gamblers but they account for a very disproportionate 40 per cent of the losses,” he said.

“Three out of four people being harmed by gambling principally use electronic gaming machines.”

Cr Kirwan said pokies addiction affected more than just the gambler and could contribute to family violence, burglaries, unemployment and homelessness.

The Alliance for Gambling Reform advocates for removing addictive and misleading machine design features, introducing $1 maximum bets, and reducing caps in areas like Greater Dandenong.

“We need to work together with other councils and like-minded community organisations to achieve them,” Cr Kirwan said.

It has successfully lobbied the Federal Government to restrict gambling advertisements during sports broadcasts and G-rated viewing times.

Police arrested four teenagers following an aggravated burglary and armed robberies in the south-east. They were arrested in an allegedly stolen Holden Captiva travelling south on EastLink in the early hours of Wednesday 28 June following a co-ordinated effort from various police resources.

The Holden was allegedly stolen on Monday 26 June during an aggravated burglary in Dingley Village about 11.20pm.

Police allege it was then used during an armed robbery in Clow Street, Dandenong, about 7.30am on Tuesday 27 June and later in First Avenue, Dandenong North. It was later involved in a pursuit in Springvale Road, Springvale, police said.

A 16-year-old boy from Seaford, two girls aged 15 and 14 from Frankston, and a 14-year-old boy from Dandenong assisted Eastern Region Crime Squad detectives with their inquiries.

In Brief Armed robbery at milk bar

By Casey Neill Low cloud and rain probably caused a plane crash that killed a Noble Park man, an investigation has found.

On Wednesday 28 June the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) released a report into the 29 January 2016 incident that killed four people, including Donald Hately, 68.

A Piper Aircraft Corp PA-28 aircraft was on a private flight from Moorabbin Airport to King Island, but after passing over Point Lonsdale entered an area of low visibility.

The pilot turned 180 degrees and initially tracked back towards Point Lonsdale, before heading south over the ocean.

The pilot again turned right about two minutes later, before entering a rapid descent.

The plane hit the water about 12.30pm, 6.6 kilometres south-west of Point Lonsdale.

The ATSB found that the pilot probably experienced a loss of visual cues because of low cloud and rain and became spatially disoriented.

“The risk of a loss of control in the conditions was increased by the pilot’s lack of instrument flying proficiency,” the report said.

The ATSB said pre-flight planning needed to include the conditions at all stages of the flight.

“It is always possible that the actual weather conditions will be different to those forecast,” the report said.

The report said that education and training in the practical application of meteorological principles had been shown to enhance pilots’ ability to recognise and respond to deteriorating weather conditions.

“Requesting assistance from air traffic control can increase the chances of re-establishing visual cues,” it said.

Thieves armed with a knife terrorised a couple in a Springvale South milk bar. Two men, possibly of Asian background, entered the Harold Road store just after 7pm on Friday 16 June.

Greater Dandenong CIU Detective Sergeant Dean Hedge said they’d covered their faces with lightcoloured scarves with a spotted pattern.

One was described as about 183cm tall. One was wearing a hat over his head and the other had a hood on.

The victim was at the rear of the premises with his wife and watched on a portable CCTV service as they unlatched a door leading behind the counter and went to the cigarette stand. He left the rear room and approached the men, but one of them produced a long silver-bladed knife and threatened him. The victim put up his hands, retreated to the rear room and activated an audible alarm.

“He has done the right thing,” Det Sgt Hedge said.

The thieves fled with about 15 packs of cigarettes.

Det Sgt Hedge said that numerous police units attended but were unable to ascertain if they left in a vehicle or on foot.

“The canine unit didn’t get a track, so I’d say they were in a vehicle,” he said.

He said the crime prevention team attended the milk bar the following day to provide advice, including adding lights at the store front.

Shopper floored, bag snatched Two men knocked a Springvale shopper to the ground and stole her handbag.

Police said the victim exited a bus on Redhill Road, Springvale, about 6.10pm on Sunday 25 June.

Two men pulled up behind her in a car, got out and approached. One grabbed her handbag and she struggled to hold onto it. She fell to the ground and struck her right elbow and face, causing bruising and grazing to her cheek and lip.

The thief succeeded in snatching the bag, while his counterpart stole clothing from the woman’s shopping jeep.

Students in a MAD rush to plant Bangholme students put more than 300 plants into their school grounds in a bid to make a difference.

More than 600 students from Prep to Year 12 at Cornish College participated in the mass planting during Make a Difference (MAD) Week.

The plants will encourage biodiversity and attract further bird and wildlife to the 100-acre classroom.

Cornish College bought the plants following a successful bid for a $1000 Momentum Energy Junior Landcare Grant.

Cornish College grounds manager Tom Humphreys and parent David Jupp co-ordinated the three-day planting, from Monday 26 to Wednesday 28 June.

Sessions started with Mr Jupp providing a presentation about the types of animals the new habitat would attract.

Students then watched a short demonstration of the correct way to plant a tube sock before digging, planting, installing a tree guard and watering their plants.

“This is a great start to building an understory below the established gums behind our oval, and will increase biodiversity and attract a broader range of bird life,” Mr Humphreys said.

Principal Vicki Steer said the project directly involved students in improving their campus and understanding the difference they could make to their environment.

“It is great to see older and younger students working together in multi-age groups and further cementing friendships that span year groups,” she said.

Cornish College reinvents its timetable during MAD Week as students, staff and parents work together on projects that make a difference at the school and for the wider community.

Other activities during this year’s MAD Week include collecting socks for the homeless, singing at local nursing homes, and a book swap for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation.

That means H&R Block ads on the TV and plenty of stock take and stock reduction sales at our favourite shops.

But it also brings with it some changes to legislation which will affect the housing market.

If you can remember the very first home buyers guide, it was in response to the State Government introducing stamp duty exemptions for first home buyers for property purchasers of up to $600,000. As of 1 July, that exemption commences for first home buyers entering land contracts and other contracts of sale for established properties.

I made the claim that this reactionary measure would not do as much as the State Government would hope for first home buyers. I believed and still believe that land developers will utilise the savings in stamp duty to effectively raise their prices.

This was and still is a ‘Captain Obvious’ prediction. Anyone who has bought or is seeking to buy land knows; regardless of a stamp duty reduction land prices are continuing to rise. I am no genius for pointing to that fact. The fundamental problem hasn’t been solved - the supply and quality of land

The last three to four years have seen a phenomenon in housing that previous generations did not experience; the price of land outstripping the cost of construction in the outer suburbs. It is ridiculous to think that product with over 1000 inputs could possibly cost less than a bit of dirt. Don’t be deceived just because building now costs less than purchasing land does not mean building is getting cheaper. The opposite applies - subcontractors and suppliers are continually raising prices to keep with the market. After all, the subbies out there may own a home, or may be looking to build one. They are just as impacted by the soaring prices of land as anybody else and they are simply doing what they can to ensure they keep up with the pace of inflation.

The State Government announced in May that it is going to create 17 new suburbs - of which only three are proposed in the South-Eastern corridor.

Put simply not enough is being done to help young buyers in the south east get access to affordable and decent land to put a house on. More needs to be done to increase supply and access of land. It is that simple.

As for my advice and guidance; those self-employed looking to buy a home Be organised! Don’t procrastinate getting your taxes done - get yourself together and lodge your returns within days of July commencing. Heed this advice now - you will thank me later!

Funding cuts a boarding blunder

By Casey Neill Boarders in Greater Dandenong’s 100-plus illegal rooming houses are more vulnerable following a State Government funding cut, says a community legal centre.

But the State Government said the Rooming House Outreach Program funding wasn’t being cut, just being redirected into a more comprehensive system.

Peninsula Community Legal Centre provided the program, which ended on Friday 30 June.

It was the only dedicated tenancy support program that went into illegal homes to provide advice and support to residents.

It also helped to identify where illegal rooming houses were and systematically reported illegal operators to bring dodgy properties into the legal registration system.

There are 87 registered rooming houses in Greater Dandenong, a number that’s grown over the past decade as house prices have increased.

The Tenants Union of Victoria estimated the number of illegal rooming houses in Greater Dandenong at more than 100.

vulnerable rooming house residents, “particularly during this time of major legislative change for the rooming house sector”.

“This should be a time for additional support for rooming house residents, particularly for those vulnerable community members residing in unregistered, illegal and substandard rooming houses,” she said.

“We urge the State Government to review this decision.”

A spokesperson for Consumer Affairs Minister Marlene Kairouz said the Rooming House Outreach Program would become a more comprehensive, state-wide Tenancy Assistance and Advocacy Program.

“The Rooming House Outreach Program was delivered out of just two metropolitan locations,” they said.

“This new program goes much further by engaging 13 community-based agencies across the state to reach tenants who need help - including many rooming house residents outside of Melbourne.“ The spokesperson said that under the new TAAP funding model, there woulf be 14 full-time equivalent positions available to provide direct and outreach support to vulnerable tenants.

But Ms Galloway said TAAP didn’t have the same community engagement as the old program.

“Under the new program, as we understand it, we won’t have the same capacity to do the same level of visiting rooming houses and welfare checks,” she said.

Dandenong non-profit Women’s Health in the South East (WHISE) drew attention to the issue during Refugee Week.

WHISE works closely with newly arrived and refugee women to help them access mainstream services, including finding suitable rental accommodation.

“My clients live mostly in private rentals and often have to move house,” settlement services officer Marian Salvage said.

“One of my tasks is to help them find new accommodation.

“These women are great tenants - they are fastidious, they don’t drink or smoke or play loud music, or have pets.”

Ms Salvage said she regularly attended open for inspections with clients.

“I have come across rot and mould on walls due to excessive moisture; leaking taps, which create a huge problem with the of rising costs of water; clients with young children having to go without hot water for two weeks despite numerous calls; and mice and cockroach infestations, just to name a few,” she said.

“The situation we have at the moment is that landlords appear to have more power when it

comes to the rental market.

“We need to ensure that landlords take responsibility for the properties they rent out.”

The State Government is reviewing the Residential Tenancies Act (RTA) and WHISE urged people to stand up and have their voice heard.

Ms Salvage said having a clean and safe place to live was getting harder, but making money off the poor and vulnerable during this housing boom was not acceptable.

“This is happening in our own backyard, and we just can’t stand by and ignore it,” she said.

New multilingual videos are explaining tenancy rights to new Victorians.

The State Government produced the video series in Arabic, Karen and Swahili for the growing Iraqi, Syrian, Myanmar and Congolese communities.

The languages reflect the top five countries of birth of people granted visas in Victoria.

The videos cover starting and ending a lease, bonds, repairs and condition reports.

Consumer Affairs Victoria partnered with refugee and migrant settlement agency AMES Australia to share the videos with their clients.

Cr Blades’ motion asked the council to draft a media release in public support of the campaign and write to the Consumer Affairs Minister to endorse it.

Cr Tim Dark opposed the motion. He worried the campaign was advocating for forcing landlords to update their properties to new standards.

He said he worked in residential real estate for two years.

“Landlords never absorb any costs. It’s always passed onto the tenant,” he said.

“That counteracts the whole point.

“We want more affordable housing.”

Cr Kirwan said the campaign’s aims were “about reflecting a new reality in Australia”.

“We are not far away from a majority of Australians renting for the rest of their lives,” he said.

“Only the property industry in Victoria are against it and they have vested interests to be.

“In parts of Europe high levels of renting have been successful without serious negative social effects because of the protections given to renters.”

Greater Dandenong is supporting a campaign to give tenants “a fair shake”.

Councillor Sean O’Reilly was among supporters for a motion from Cr Roz Blades to get behind the Make Renting Fair Campaign at the 13 June council meeting.

Cr O’Reilly said the balance of power in Australia had shifted to the landlords.

“I’ve seen that shift happen over decades,” he said.

“Due to housing affordability, young people are renting longer and supply is under strain and not meeting demands.

“When that happens, naturally renters are not going to want to complain to their landlord when the property they’re living in doesn’t meet minimum standards.

“We should be advocating for the person with less power to have better means of redress.”

He said stronger controls and minimum standards would mean “everybody gets a fair shake”.

The Tenants Union of Victoria launched the Make Renting Fair Campaign in response to a State Government review into the Residential Tenancies

Act, which controls safety, security of tenure and privacy.

Cr Blades said Greater Dandenong’s Housing Strategy 2014-2024 found that affordability was one of the biggest housing issues facing the community.

“One third of our population are in rental properties,” she said.

“Rising property and rental prices have reduced housing affordability in Greater Dandenong.

“Throwing our support behind this advocacy campaign is one way to publically support vulnerable members of our community.

“Large amounts of our people can’t afford to rent decent properties.

“There are a number of properties that are quite unsuitable.

“I’ve been in houses where laundries have been boarded up, where there’s not been proper access to showers.

“They don’t seem to have any rights.

“They’re terrified but can’t move out because can’t afford to go somewhere else, but their landlord won’t fix their problems.”

A couple of weeks ago, I was rummaging through some cardboard boxes in the garage at home. I found the usual suspects inside - broken toys, old birthday cards and long forgotten memories. I was just about to throw the boxes in the skip when I found one of my old school reports. I decided to keep it - not so much for the sake of nostalgia, but for my future generations to read. Turning each page instantly transported me back in time. It was fun at first, but I was soon recalling memories of childhood anxiety attacks, sleepless nights and a world of adolescent worry!

I think we can all remember receiving the occasional bad report card at school. Remembering the stress associated with completing relentless assessment tasks and failing the odd test isn’t a memory

most of us want to resurrect. I’m sure we can all remember a sleepless night before an exam or receiving a report that was worse than expected. Then there was the fear of bringing a bad report home to the parents. It was the ultimate nerve-wracking experience.

Although my work in class was above average, some teachers felt compelled to provide “improvement” feedback that consisted of ‘Could do better!’ or ‘Must try harder’. There was no accompanying elaboration about what it was that I could do better or in what field I could try harder. It just made me feel like I was dumb. Today, that sort of feedback goes against every good teaching pedagogical approach out there, but for the time, it was perfectly acceptable.

While much has been done in the past decade to ensure new teachers are providing good feedback to their students and differentiating their classroom curriculum, not much has changed in regards to assessment, exams, NAPLAN and achievement standards. There’s an argument to be made about assessment overload now! There seems to be more of it than ever before! Teachers and students are buried under it! The problem stems from a systemic and outdated belief that relentless testing is the way forward in education. In reality, it gives politicians the chance to label children and provides multi-billion dollar industries with multi-billions of dollars!

Working support for all abilities

By Casey Neill Fid Constantinides felt like he was “going loopy” while he was desperately searching for an employer to give him a go.

The Cranbourne East man has muscular dystrophy, which is causing the muscles in his legs to break down.

The 49-year-old walks with crutches and has some trouble with his back and balance, but a small scissor lift and a chair are all he needs to perform his job at Milners Repetition in Dandenong.

“It’s going to get worse, but I’m not ready for a home yet,” Mr Constantinides said.

“You want to feel like you’re important.

“For your own mentality, you need to do something.”

One prospective employer asked him to jump from an excavator to prove that he could.

Another flat-out asked “so what’s wrong with you?”.

Dandenong Valley Job Support (DVJS) was the difference.

The non-profit seeks employers willing to give prospective workers with disabilities a go.

“Once somebody’s placed into a role, my role is post-placement support,” Carol Watts said.

“My job is to look after them and make sure they stay in the role.

“When we place someone, we have a team of trainers.

“Show us what you want the person to be trained to do, we assist with that training process so it takes that burden off the business.”

Milners Repetition owner David Gedicke said this was a huge incentive to give Mr Constantinides a go.

“Someone came in to train Fid to make sure he understood everything that was being told to him,” he said.

“They didn’t leave until they were confident that he was safe in what he was doing and I was

confident in what he was doing.

“I think it also did help to have a subsidy to go along, too.”

Mr Gedicke said the workers DVJS presented wanted to work - rather than just meet their Centrelink obligations.

“They want to go out and be part of society,” he said.

“I’ve had so many people who are sent to you, they come for the interview, and you can tell straight away they’re not interested.”

He’s even called applicants to advise they’ve landed the job and been met with disappointment.

“If it doesn’t seem to be working out, I can make a call to Carol,” Mr Gedicke said.

The parts end up in mining, whitegoods, EFTPOS machines and more - “the little bits and pieces that you don’t ever think about where they come from”.

“We’re focused on large volume manufacturing, whereas a lot of engineering places, anything more than 10 is too many for them,” he said.

“Originally, it was my father’s business.”

David trained as a jet engine mechanic, but found the business provided him with a creative outlet.

He’s been there 25 years and bought it from his dad.

Expert says marketing is the way to hook in profits

And according to a marketing expert, it’s this exact insanity that too many businesses apply to their strategic marketing plan.

Marketing strategist, creative writer and inspiring conference speaker Damian Morgan encouraged local business owners to be bold, precise and informed at business excellence seminars held by Star News Group at Dandenong's Drum Theatre on Tuesday 20 June and at the Waterman Centre in Victor Crescent, Narre Warren, recently.

He walked business owners through a marketing crash course covering the whos, the whats, the whens, the wheres and the whys of strategic marketing.

He said that marketing isn’t optional when seeking business success.

Using examples of brands such as Tradie underwear and Workwear, Adidas, Nike and Lorna Jane, he stressed the importance of brand positioning, strongly encouraging businesses to have a firm understanding of their target audience.

He said that a good advertisement doesn’t appeal to everyone, but instead charms and hooks people that the products and services are aimed at.

“A bad ad costs the same as a good ad but the difference is bad ads don’t work,” he said.

“We think that advertising is telling people what we’re capable of which can be our biggest mistake but great advertising actually appeals to people’s hearts as well as their minds.

“Good ads don’t hook everyone, but they get far more than they would if they were watered down (to tailor for everyone).”

In Brief New-look logo for chamber The Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce revealed a fresh-look logo as part of an ongoing evolution.

Chamber president Paul Broom said the new design reflected the chamber’s dynamic future and its position as a trustworthy, community-focused organisation.

The three Cs are an evolution of the previous logo and the circular aspect represents the chamber’s all-encompassing nature.

Mr Broom said the group’s role was to co-ordinate, develop and facilitate opportunities for regional businesses to work together, thrive and contribute to the local community.

When it came to marketing and advertising platforms, he highlighted that the importance of local media outlets should never be overlooked and encouraged business owners to use their local newspapers to tap into the market in which they exist.

“If you want to know local news, politics and sports and about what’s happening in the local area, there isn’t many other sources than the local newspaper,” he said.

“The people reading those papers - they’re local. From a commercial point of view, that should

be music to your ears.

“Local newspapers should be the first cab off the rank, your base layer.

“You need to saturate the market in which you sit. If you do that, you’re much more likely to get a return from the people more likely to buy from you.”

Within local advertisements he encouraged businesses to use content space wisely, emphasising that ads work best when focused on one ‘hook’ and are tailored to suit the changing needs of individual seasons.

“You’re not going to fill the ad with the business’s whole story,” he said.

“Use the content space to say one thing - one compelling reason why somebody should give you a go.

“And try to scratch different itches once a month.”

Springvale will soon be home to a new business park. Franze Developments and Sampieri Group bought an undeveloped 4.2 hectare industrial site on Centre Road from Nuplex for $5 million.

They plan to transform the land into a business park with flexible tenancy configurations ranging from 90 square metres to 20,000 square metres.

Franze Developments director Paul Franze said the partnership was targeting local businesses looking to expand and grow.

“Springvale has been identified by Melbourne 2030 as a major activity centre, and developments such as the Springvale Business Park will contribute to the evolution of the area into a modern and integrated centre with good design outcomes,” he said. “We’re anticipating commercial returns of up to 7 per cent which is a sound investment for local businesses.”

The development application is with the City of Greater Dandenong.

Construction is scheduled to start late this year, with stage one due for completion mid next year.

By Casey Neill Damien Leith is keen to try a Dandee Donut when his Roy Orbison tribute show rolls into town.

His Saturday 15 July performance at the Drum Theatre will be the 2006 Australian Idol winner’s first trip to Dandenong and he told the Journal he wanted to check out what the suburb had to offer.

The show will celebrate the music of Roy Orbison but it’s not a traditional “tribute”.

“I don’t dress up as him or imitate him,” Leith said.

“I tell a lot of stories that surround the songs, because I’ve chatted to the people associated with him, I’m able to share some stories that people haven’t heard before.

“All in all, we’re on stage for over two hours.”

He tries to cover as much as he can, but still occasionally gets a fan after the show asking “how come you didn’t play ... ?”.

“With someone like Roy Orbison, because he did so many songs, everyone’s got their own connection to different songs,” he said.

“I grew up on his music and I adore his music.

“I recorded an album of his songs with his wife in Nashville.

“I write with one of his big co-writers.”

Leith said audiences were “really into the night out, everyone sings along and claps and dances sometimes, they have a laugh”.

“We don’t take ourselves too seriously on stage as well,” he said.

He’s been playing with the same band for 11 years.

SPORT Bounce back Burras aim for flag

By Nick Creely Everything is starting to click well and truly into place down at Keysborough, with the second placed Burras surging into premiership favouritism after a stunning month of football.

After a disappointing 2016 season - in which the Burras finished in the bottom four with a 7-11 record - they have sprung to life, and are now eyeing off their first flag since 1976.

Burras coach Matt Ferguson said that the turnaround of his proud club has come down to building a list that competes no matter the circumstances.

“We’re an extremely close group on and off field, and I guess getting a lot of guys back to the club has really helped this year, and some really handy recruits have helped too,” he said.

“Last year we got smashed with injury, and we have this year as well, but the difference probably is the depth to cover those guys.

“One big difference too is the introduction of line coaches - it has really added to the improvement of our players.”

Hot on the heels of the dominant Chelsea Heights Football Club - which sits atop the Division 2 ladder - the players simply can’t wait to test themselves against the Dees on 8 July.

“I think Chelsea Heights obviously deserve the mantle as premiership favourites - we think we’re in a bunch of teams that can compete for the flag, but until we beat Chelsea Heights we can’t lay claim to that tag,” he said.

“I’d be lying if I said we didn’t eye off the Round 13 clash with Chelsea Heights - it’s in our minds and we are really looking forward to that challenge.

“In this comp, however, if you’re 5 per cent off against any team you’re in trouble.”

Rangers call for Roberts to bring in a solid centre The Dandenong Basketball Association has announced that Tayla Roberts has signed with the Jayco Rangers for the 2017-18 WNBL season.

Roberts will join fellow AIS alumni Sara Blicavs, Carley Mijovic and Tessa Lavey on the 201718 Jayco Rangers squad, having all last played together in the 2010-11 WNBL season.

An established veteran centre at just 24 years of age, Roberts will bring a strong inside presence to a Jayco Rangers team filled with hot outside shooting.

Rangers coach Larissa Anderson was thrilled to hear that the 2010 Rookie of the Year award winner had signed with Dandenong for WNBL 2017-18, stating that she is looking forward to working with the young star on her development.

“It is fantastic to have Tayla on board with the Rangers for the upcoming season,” Anderson said.

“We have seen consistently what she is capable of at WNBL level over the last couple of seasons and will be a valuable contributor to the Rangers front court, complementing the rest of our group really well.”

Roberts is known throughout the league as a strong post-player and fans got a first-hand preview of what she will bring to the Jayco Rangers last year when she visited Dandenong Stadium with Adelaide.

Bringing that same brilliance and passion for the game consistently is something Roberts is looking to grab hold of with the Jayco Rangers and, in particular, with head coach Larissa Anderson.

“I had a couple of years where I kind of just plateaued and was no longer enjoying my basketball,” Roberts said.

“But over the past 12 months I have really regained my love for the sport and have made some big improvements to my game.

“I feel that joining the Jayco Rangers will really push me further down that path - they have a great culture and feel about them.

“You look at the team and coaching staff and see what amazing chemistry and comradery they all have, it’s definitely a big selling point for me.

“I have great friends on the team and Larissa is an amazing coach, I think she’s really going to help take my game to the next level.”

we played a bit, and there was a lot of positives out of that day, in terms of the stat sheet.

“Chelsea Heights are so efficient with their entries up forward so that’s a real focus for us and something we’ve learnt from,” he said.

“Our starts to games have been great - we won eight of our first 10 first quarters and come out really strongly, and that means the opposition chases your tail when you can get an early fivegoal lead.

“Our tackling has also been exceptional this year - we’re regularly getting 80 or more tackles each week and that’s been a real focus.

“But the biggest improvement in our game has probably been our two-way running from our mids - it’s really benefiting us and our forwards.”

One of the great features of the Burras in 2017 has been the return of former AFL player and NFL punter, Chris Bryan.

The 35-year-old, who played the majority of his 46 game AFL career in the ruck for Carlton and Collingwood, is dominating in a ruck-forward role at his junior club becoming an unstoppable presence around the ground.

“He is clearly the best player in the competition, no doubt about it,” Ferguson declared.

“Interestingly, Chris is kicking more goals when it’s coinciding with him spending more time in the ruck - I think that’s helped his game overall because he’s been able to get more clear around the ground - he is getting high 20 possessions and a lot of goals and hit-outs.”

Add star players Tim Werner, Ryan Goodes, Geoff Humphrey, Jack Cole, Riet Pal and Karl Schoenmaekers to the mix and it’s little wonder the Boroughs are flying.

And maybe 2017 is finally the year they hold the cup aloft in premiership glory.

City boys kick for Kanga Cup

Soccer history continues to be made in the south-east with the Dandenong City Under 15 Boys team becoming the first City side to qualify for the internationally renowned Kanga Cup. The Kanga Cup, which is the biggest international youth football tournament in the southern hemisphere, hosts team from countries such as Malaysia, India, Fiji, South Africa, Korea, Georgia, England, China, New Zealand, the USA, Indonesia and East Timor, begins on Monday 3 July in Canberra.

All up, the tournament hosts up to 350 teams.

The tournament was founded in 1991 in Sydney before becoming based in Canberra in 1993.

The inaugural Kanga Cup in ’91 had just 35 participating teams, with that figure rising to 375 in last year’s tournament.

The City boys have only recently started playing together and the majority of the team are in their first season of NPL football.

Although the ultimate aim is to win the tournament, the experience of playing in an international tournament will aid the development of the talented youngsters.

Dandenong City Under 15 Boys will be coached by Dave Van Ete. Dandenong City organiser Naumka Petreski said a lot of hard work and dedication has gone into allowing the boys the opportunity to play in such a prestigious tournament.

“It’s a once in lifetime experience for the boys - you don’t really do this a lot with international teams,” she said.

“We have done a lot of running around to make this happen for the boys.”

It continues on a stunning season of success for the club, with the seniors in NPL 2 East sitting on top of the table.

Cobras say the only way is up

By Nick Creely Embattled, but not broken - there is no better way to encapsulate the Sandown Cobras Football Club.

It has been battered and bruised throughout what has been a tough old 2017 season, losing by 100 points or more almost a dozen times so far.

But, believe it or not, the proud club is heading in the right direction on and off-field with chairman Zain Machfud one of many who are helping to rebuild Edinburgh Reserve from the ground up, albeit slowly - and there first senior flag since 1997 may not be as far away as people think.

“The vibe around the club is fantastic, actually.

“Those heavy losses aren’t really a true test of our character - the results in the last few weeks and the win against Dandenong - has really got the spirits up around the club.

“While we’ve had some tough moments on field, the boys are responding well and are really behind the club,” Machfud said.

“We’ve put in some processes off-field - we had a trivia night recently that had over 100 people which hasn’t been seen for a number of years while there is plenty of work to be done, we are heading in the right direction and are united, which is fantastic.

“We are laying the foundations this year for a real launch next year.

“We’ve got a great core group of 20-25 players that are really driving the direction of the club. We did have some dramas earlier in the season getting a reserves side up and going but we did that.”

On 17 June - up against the Dandenong Redlegs - the Cobras had one of their most memorable days in years, winning by six-points in a nail-biter.

“It was a fantastic week for us - our netballers had a win, our reserves also won and then the seniors backed it up, it was such a relief.

“We also have an all-abilities team, and they’re undefeated so far, so it was brilliant - very exciting,” Machfud said.

The Sandown Cobras are rebuilding their proud club. 154246 Machfud, who has played 112 senior games for his club, believes the improvement is there to see, heaping praise on new senior coach Ange Sammaratino.

“We couldn’t be happier with Ange and all our coaches, really, from Matt McMormick coaching the reserves, Phil Dickson as his assis-

tant and Phil Foster as senior assistant.

“Ange has been fantastic in terms of motivating the boys, he has a great connection with the lads.

“While on field hasn’t been pretty at times in terms of the final result, the boys have taken on board what he is teaching them,” he said.

“We’re focusing on continuous improvement,

Late winner leaves sluggish City with the three points

By Nick Creely NPL REVIEW - ROUND 21 Dandenong City survived a sluggish start to cruise away to a 2-1 victory over Moreland City on Friday night.

The ladder leading City, coming into the game as one of the most in-form teams in the competition - arguably the state - were heavy favourites.

In a blockbuster clash, City couldn’t get their game up and going for the first 40 minutes, before Shaun Filipovic finally found the back of the net.

But Moreland answered almost immediately, with Trent Rixon bringing the house down with a massive goal just after half time to level the scores.

And in a tense last 30 minutes, City’s Nick Kalmar converted from a red card penalty in the 90th minute to hand his side victory.

City travels to Dunstan Reserve on Saturday to tackle Brunswick City FC in another massive clash.

Star striker Brandon Barnes then put on an almighty show with a double strike - leaving the Thunder 3-0 within the first 20 minutes of game play.

Luckily for Bendigo, the Thunder slowed down considerably, with Jordan Seeto the next to score in the second half.

The Thunder are at home on Saturday night as they host Werribee City.

Meanwhile, Springvale White Eagles registered an impressive 3-1 victory over Melbourne Victory at Epping Stadium.

The Eagles scored in the 13th minute via Isaiah Joseph, before Victory squared the ledger in the 56th minute.

But two quick goals late in the contest ensured the Eagles would taste victory.

The Eagles get the perfect chance to back up their victory when they host Bendigo City at home on Saturday afternoon - kick off at 3pm.

11.15(81), Sandown 3.10(28) went down by 98-points to Black Rock 18.13(121), Dandenong 8.8(56) fought hard against Moorabbin 14.18(102), and Lyndhurst 14.8(92) bounced back with an impressive away victory against Carrum Patterson Lakes 10.4(64).

Things are beginning to heat up in the finals race, with Lyndale perhaps the only team outside the top six capable of doing much damage.
