Once installed, footage will be sent directly to Pakenham police station for monitoring. “It is expected that CCTV and these other recent projects will help to address community concerns and perceptions, and improve public safety in the park overall,” Mr Lane said.

The long-awaited installation of blanket-coverage surveillance is underway at Pakenham crime hotspot Bourke Park, in a bid to increase public safety. Cardinia Shire Council is in the process of equipping the popular park with CCTV surveillance cameras and an additional 13 lights, funded by a 2016 State Government public safety infrastructure grant. The works, which also include landscaping to improve passive surveillance and visibility from the road, follow extensive lobbying over the years by council and community members. For years the park, located along Station Street and Railway Avenue, Pakenham, had been the focus of many community concerns, due to its “high degree of anti-social and criminal behaviour” such as drug and alcohol use, vandalism and assaults at the site and the nearby Pakenham train station. The concerns are shared with Pakenham police, who have also identified the site as a “high-risk community location” for crime. The council responded to these concerns in 2014 with a “rejuvenation project” featuring infrastructure and safety improvements including the installation of two playgrounds, barbecues, picnic settings and improved lighting, but security cameras were not part of the plan. Cardinia Shire Council’s team leader of safe and inclusive communities David Lane said the aim of the 2014 project was to “revitalise” the park and make it a “desirable destination” where people could enjoy themselves without being subject to anti-social or criminal behaviours. Project evaluations, he said, showed improvements across a range of areas, however identified the need for “some additional works” and a 2016 feasibility study determined that due to a lack of “natural surveillance” cameras were needed. “These limitations included a lack of natural surveillance due to there being few buildings in close proximity, the location of the bus stop, and the

Coffee cart of courage fires up By Helena Adeloju The owners of a fire-bombed Heritage Springs cafe have bounced back, opening a coffee cart while the damage is repaired. Thida Lim’s coffee cart opened for business on Tuesday 27 June, restoring the local shopping precinct’s coffee supply for shoppers and workers. “It’s good to at least have something going,” Ms Lim said. “Everyone has been so nice helping to raise money for us." She said Heritage Springs was a beautiful community. “Mums, teachers and workmen have been coming to buy coffee from our cart,” she said. “Thankyou to everyone for supporting us.” Three men who were captured on CCTV vision entering the premises at 2.30am on Sunday 11 June are believed to have sprayed accelerant throughout the shop, and set it alight. The Pakenham and Nar Nar Goon CFA crews attended to fight the initial fire, and helped to clean up the area in the aftermath. The arson squad was also called into investigate. Despite the setback, Ms Lim’s smile and cheery disposition are the hallmarks of her optimism. “We are still hoping to be able to open in July,” she said.

Ben has time on his hands By Bonny Burrows For Pakenham’s Ben Carpenter, the chance to work local was too good an opportunity to pass up - despite it involving a career change. The former machinist turned welder used to commute daily to Dandenong - a two-hour round commute during peak hour - and was sick of spending his days in traffic. So, when the State Government’s Pakenham pre-cast factory, specialising in custommade concrete sections for its Level Crossing Removal project opened just eight minutes from home, he knew he had to apply. The massive, purpose-built factory on Pakenham’s Greenhills Road employs 200 local concretors, steel fixers, welders and plant operators - the majority of which, like Ben are local. Ben started work at the local site in October 2016 and despite the early 6am start time, he hasn’t looked back since. “The travel time is awesome ... I’m saving at least an hour

a day of commuting,” Ben said. Working locally means Ben can make the most of the limited winter daylight, and spend more time with his fiancee and father. He’s home just after 2.30pm most days, leaving plenty of time to tackle household chores and catch up with friends. Along with the newfound freedom the job brings, Ben insists he “actually really loves” his new career. The 40-year-old’s role involves welding steel cages which reinforce the rail lines’ 30-tonne concrete segments. “I really like doing something different to engineering,” Ben said. While the rail-yard may not be a permanent job - work is expected to wrap up once the project is complete - Ben can’t see himself returning to his former life. “I’d like to stay in construction and stay in Pakenham,” Ben said. “I’m really enjoying the change.”

Mick Morland was the life of the party. time and effort,” he said. And that’s what he had been doing since he took on the presidency of a kindergarten in Narre Warren 30 years ago. A passionate Tigers supporter, he was an Upper Beaconsfield premiership player and reserves coach, president of Narre Warren Junior Football Club and one of its coaches of the decade. Rotary Club of Berwick President Mark Caulfield remembers his friend and fellow Rotarian as a generous man who gave his community his all. A “reliable and hard-working” member of Rotary for 23 years, Mr Morland knew how to crack a joke, but was also known for his strong work ethic and tireless efforts in helping grow the ageing club. He served on many Rotary committees, including a stint as president from 2012-’13 He helped enter partnerships with Casey to provide picnic tables and the Rotary Rotunda in Pioneer Park, a rotunda in Buchanan Park and ongoing work with the Casey North Community Information and Support Service, the Australia Day festivities at Pioneer Park and the Carols by Candlelight celebrations in Berwick. In 2009, Mr Morland was officially recognised for his Rotary commitments with the prestigious Paul Harris. “He welcomed all new comers to the club and upheld the ideals of Rotary to do good in the world,” Mr Caulfield said. There was also Mr Morland’s renowned “wicked sense of humour”. Casey councillor Milla Gilic recalled this piece of golden advice from Mr Morland just after winning her seat on the council. “See this Deputy Mayor medallion, they don’t tell ya, but just in case of emergency crisis, it’s actually gold foil wrapped chocolate!” It would have only been dispensed days after Mr Morland had lost his own seat in November’s council elections. Councillor Susan Serey said her former Edrington Ward colleague would often joke that

He had an endearing way of being - a relaxed, self-depracating Aussie style, a love of fun and a good laugh, Cr Serey said. “That was Mick’s way of making everyone feel that they belonged and were a part of our community.” Casey councillor Wayne Smith, who served alongside Mr Morland from the first term of Casey Council, marvelled at his work ethic. While serving as a councillor, Mr Morland was running a cleaning business. He would wake at 3am to drive back into town from weekend council conferences to do a cleaning shift. “As mayor, he was probably the hardest working mayor we’ve had. He turned up to every-

Mourners will be making a fitting tribute to longserving Berwick and Casey councillor Mick Morland, so highly regarded for his unstinting community service. Since his sudden death, mourners have been requested to donate to the philanthropic Casey Cardinia Foundation in lieu of flowers. Floral tributes had been flooding in to the Morland family home after Mr Morland was fatally struck by a car on the Princes Highway, near Wilson Botanic Park, while he was out walking on 24 June. His wife Kay Morland contacted Casey Cardinia Foundation executive officer Therese Howell and asked if the foundation would accept donations from mourners in lieu of flowers. “Kay expressed that she felt it appropriate for any donations to benefit the community that Mick loved so dearly, through the Casey Cardinia Foundation,” Ms Howell said. An array of community groups - football clubs and leagues, SES, Guides, Scouts, Rotary, Neighbourhood Watch, environment and church groups - have expressed their grief and shock about the horrifying news. All spoke warmly of the husband, father and grandfather and his support for their causes. Among his pet campaigns were a library in Hampton Park, a new track for Casey Little Athletics, an aquatic centre in Narre Warren and the Bunjil Place complex. Casey Mayor Sam Aziz paid tribute to the “decades of dedication” from the seven-term councillor. “He was easy to work with, he had his heart in the right place and he was compassionate - these are rare qualities these days, unfortunately. “I’ve lost a dear friend, the community has lost a statesman.” Cr Aziz lamented how Mr Morland could have lost his life during such a “benign, pleasant activity” as taking his routine evening walk to manage his type two diabetes. Casey Council - which has lowered its flags to half-mast - will decide on a lasting tribute with Mr Morland’s family, Cr Aziz said. “He was devoted to his wife, Kay, his children and his grandchildren, and our thoughts are with them as they grieve.” Mr Morland is the second longest-serving Casey councillor, behind Wayne Smith, and stood as a Liberal candidate for State Parliament. Mayors Jim Memeti of Greater Dandenong and Brett Owen of Cardinia, Victoria Police and a raft of politicians from several allegiances have paid tribute. State Opposition Leader Matthew Guy described the Liberal life-member as “an institution in Casey, a great bloke with a heart of gold”. Gembrook MP Brad Battin said he would be remembered for the many things he delivered for the community he loved for decades. “All of the City of Casey will miss the man with that moustache,” he said. “Thanks Mick, you will be missed.” When he received an Order of Australia Medal in January last year, he told Star News that all his years of service had made him realise how many people did not put their hands up to help the community. “I always believed that if you want to be involved in your community you have to put in the

Van Vliet brothers rev it up A Narre Warren North band of brothers have made history by scooping all the places in Australia’s premier off-road racing event. Mitchell, Jake and Cooper Van Vliet finished 1, 2 and 3 on their quad bikes ahead of an international field at the Finke Desert Race on the Queen’s Birthday weekend. After snaring his third Finke title, Mitchell, 25, is now the most crowned rider in the race’s 41-year history. For good measure, brother Harry was part of their fuel-stop crew during this record feat. According to locals, this year’s track between Alice Springs and Finke was at its roughest and dustiest, Mitchell said. Over the 492-kilometre return trip, Mitchell tore off an average 108km/h across an array of sand, rock, bumps and pitfalls. He slowed to about 80km/h as he wrestled his bike over a 120-kilometre section of woops or sand bumps. Mitchell had the luxury of sitting down during about 15 kilometres of his ride. It’s difficult to replicate the challenging terrain while training in Narre Warren North, Mitchell said. “The race is like nothing in this world. Even the Americans who go in

the Baja (in Mexico) say it is another step crazier. “You’ve got to be 100 per cent focused to make sure nothing jumps out and catches you off-guard.” Of this year’s 600-plus riders, about 200 failed to finish. Medics apparently ran out of tubes to inflate riders’ lungs that popped during rib-shattering falls. Over his career, Mitchell has won two national championships, raced in Europe and is a current national champion in China. He’s also broken both shoulders, both wrists, both ankles and his jaw. “It’s such a physically demanding sport, but it’s more mental than anything,” he says. “If you get the mindset that you’re going to win, you’re going to push out the negativity.” At age two or three, he boarded his first motorised bike - a PW 50. Then at 12, he swapped to the four-wheelers that his father Robert raced. Mitchell’s sights are set also on breaking freestyle records - being the first in the world to jump 60 metres and the first Australian to back-flip a quadbike in dirt. He and his brothers have also formed All4FMX, performing a show of freestyle tricks in shows around Australia.

this year, Mr Butler urged council to support the inclusion of Ranfurlie in the UGB. Mr Butler outlined in his letter than any profits the club made from the sale of the land occupied by the Ranfurlie Golf Course would be used to establish a new golf course near the current site. The Amstel Golf Club will make a submission to the Victorian Planning Authority (VPA) to include the Ranfurlie Golf Course site in the UGB, and the VPA will consider if the submission has merit.

The new intersection has traffic lights installed at a brand new access road to the car park that will allow motorists to enter and exit the car park safely. The new access road, named Merinda Park Boulevard, will connect the existing car park access from Boland Drive to Thompsons Road. The remaining stages of the upgrades to Thompsons Road will include widening of the road between Dandenong-Frankston Road to Marriott Boulevard and from the Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road to Berwick-Cranbourne Road. Ms Graley said the increased lanes and traffic flow would greatly benefit the residents of Cranbourne and surrounding areas. “We are getting on with upgrading this busy road to improve traffic flow and make it easier for drivers in Melbourne’s south east to get to where they want to be,” she said.

With the completion of the Thompsons Road intersection and the connecting Merinda Park Boulevard, BMD constructions are free to move onto constructing a bridge over the rail line. Minister for Roads and Road Safety Luke Donnellan and Member for Narre Warren South Judith Graley on Monday 26 June visited the site of the new intersection that will improve access to the Merinda Park train station car park. The six-lane bridge is expected to tie into later stages of the project. Mr Donnellan described the bridge as the “centrepiece” of the $175 million Thompsons Road Upgrade that will remove the dangerous level crossing to the south of the train station. “Removing the dangerous and congested level crossing on Thompsons Road will make it safer and easier for people to access the Merinda Park station,” he said.

By Victoria Stone-Meadows A 28-year-old Narre Warren man faced the Dandenong Magistrates Court on Monday 26 June after he was arrested for a 'Goldilocks' style burglary in Cranbourne North. Police believe the man broke into a house on Hassett Lane on Wednesday 21 June, where he spent about five hours inside the property. It is understood that while inside the house, the man helped himself to a bath, a shave, brushed his teeth, cooked noodles, had a go on the PlayStation and also performed a lewd act. Before leaving the scene where he had made himself at home, the man proceeded to steal a number of small electrical items from the house. He was arrested on Monday 26 June after members of the Casey Crime Investigation Unit released CCTV footage from the house. The man is expected to face burglary and theft related offences.

The Amstel Golf Club has won support from the City of Casey to get the Ranfurlie Golf Course included in the Urban Growth Boundary (UGB). The inclusion of the course in the UGB would open the way for future development of the site for housing or other urban growth purposes. Currently, the golf course site is scheduled as inside a green wedge zone which makes any future subdividing and selling of the course difficult despite the surrounding land being part of the UGB. The Amstel Golf Club has been working to have the course included in the UGB since the State Government’s Plan Melbourne documents were updated in 2012. At a council meeting on Tuesday 20 June, council passed a vote to support the inclusion of the golf course in the UGB. Council’s manager City Planning Nicola Ward said the inclusion of the golf course site in the UGB would allow council to plan for new projects to benefit the growing community of the Cranbourne area. “The exclusion of this site from the UGB constitutes an anomaly with land surrounding it designated for urban purposes,” she said. “Its inclusion would provide an

Newspaper dumping Opinion A Narre Warren woman is expected to be charged on summons over the alleged dumping of large amounts of newspapers in the south-east. The bundles were allegedly dumped in suburbs including Beaconsfield Upper, Narre Warren North, Pakenham Upper and Cockatoo, between 16 and 24 June. The 54-year-old was arrested, interviewed and released by Emerald police on 26 June. She is expected to be charged on summons with obtaining financial advantage by deception and three counts of aggravated littering.

Pirates of all kinds boarded the school on Monday 26 June for a pirate parade and official ribbon cutting ceremony for the Silky Oak Pirate Ship. Students had the chance to engage in many pirate themed activities as well as a fish’n’chip lunch that would satisfy any ol’ salty sea dog. The new pirate ship doubles as an outdoor classroom that will allow seafaring students a chance to learn and create in this fun and interactive environment.

This year myDeductions is available to sole traders as well as individuals. The ATO also publishes a range of information on its website to help taxpayers figure out which of their expenses are deductible. “If you are using an agent, you can also talk to them to make sure the work-related expenses that you claim are right,” Ms Anderson said. The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is warning taxpayers to avoid incorrect claims for workrelated expenses at tax time this year. Assistant Commissioner Kath Anderson said the ATO is using real-time data to compare taxpayers with others in similar occupations and income brackets, to identify higher-thanexpected claims related to expenses including vehicle, travel, internet and mobile phone, and self-education. “It is important to know what you’re eligible to claim before lodging your tax return and to make sure you don’t claim more than you’re entitled to,” Ms Anderson said. “Many taxpayers don’t have a good understanding of what deductions they can claim, and believe they can claim for items which they in fact can’t. Some taxpayers even think that you can make a standard claim of $300 without having spent the money. You don’t need receipts for claims up to $300 but you must have actually spent the money, and be able to show us how you worked out your deduction if asked.” Ms Anderson said that deductions for work uniforms are also a common trap for employees at tax time. “It’s a myth that you can

Bold moves for marketing By Rebecca Skilton It’s been said that Albert Einstein defined insanity as doing the same thing over and over again but expecting different results. And according to a Brisbane marketing expert, it’s this exact insanity that too many businesses apply to their strategic marketing plan. Marketing strategist, creative writer and inspiring conference speaker Damian Morgan encouraged local business owners to be bold, precise and informed at a business excellence seminar held by Star News Group on Thursday 22 July. He walked business owners through a marketing crash course covering the whos, the whats, the whens, the wheres and the whys of strategic marketing at the Cardinia Cultural Centre. And the overriding theme? Marketing isn’t optional when seeking business success. Using examples of brands such as Tradie underwear and Workwear, Adidas, Nike and Lorna Jane, he stressed the importance of brand positioning, strongly encouraging businesses to have a firm understanding of their target audience. He said that a good advertisement doesn’t appeal to everyone, but instead charms and hooks people that the products and services are aimed at. “A bad ad costs the same as a good ad but the difference is bad ads don’t work,” he said. “We think that advertising is telling people what we’re capable of which can be our biggest mistake but great advertising actually appeals to people’s hearts as well as their minds. “Good ads don’t hook everyone, but they get far more than they would if they were watered down (to tailor for everyone).” He encouraged business owners to target specific market-

So many small businesses roll over and die in their off seasons but when you promote during the off season, you’re going to win where others won’t. “And when you don’t have seasons, make them up.” When it came to marketing and advertising platforms, he highlighted that the importance of local media outlets should never be overlooked and encouraged business owners to use their local newspapers to tap into the market in which they exist. “If you want to know local news, politics and sports and

about what’s happening in the local area, there isn’t many other sources than the local newspaper,” he said. “The people reading those papers - they’re local. From a commercial point of view, that should be music to your ears. “Local newspapers should be the first cab off the rank, your base layer. “You need to saturate the market in which you sit. If you do that, you’re much more likely to get a return from the people more likely to buy from you.” Within local advertisements he encouraged businesses to use content space wisely, emphasising that ads work best when focused on one ‘hook’ and are tailored to suit the changing needs of individual seasons. “You’re not going to fill the ad with the business’s whole story,” he said. “Use the content space to say one thing - one compelling reason why somebody should give you a go. “And try to scratch different itches once a month.”

Job support for the disabled is making the difference By Casey Neill Fid Constantinides felt like he was “going loopy” while he was desperately searching for an employer to give him a go. The Cranbourne East man has muscular dystrophy, which is causing the muscles in his legs to break down. The 49-year-old walks with crutches and has some trouble with his back and balance, but a small scissor lift and a chair are all he needs to perform his job at Milners Repetition in Dandenong. “It’s going to get worse, but I’m not ready for a home yet,” Mr Constantinides said. “You want to feel like you’re important. “For your own mentality, you need to do something.” One prospective employer asked him to jump from an excavator to prove that he could. Another flat-out asked “so what’s wrong with you?”. Dandenong Valley Job Support (DVJS) was the difference. The non-profit seeks employers willing to give prospective workers with disabilities a go. “Once somebody’s placed into a role, my role is post-placement support,” Carol Watts said.

off the business.” Milners Repetition owner David Gedicke said this was a huge incentive to give Mr Constantinides a go. “Someone came in to train Fid to make sure he understood everything that was being told to him,” he said.

“They didn’t leave until they were confident that he was safe in what he was doing and I was confident in what he was doing. “I think it also did help to have a subsidy to go along, too.” Mr Gedicke said the workers DVJS

presented wanted to work - rather than just meet their Centrelink obligations. “They want to go out and be part of society,” he said. “I’ve had so many people who are sent to you, they come for the interview, and you can tell straight away they’re not interested.” He’s even called applicants to advise they’ve landed the job and been met with disappointment. “If it doesn’t seem to be working out, I can make a call to Carol,” Mr Gedicke said. Milners Repetition makes turn components. “It’s mass production of nuts, bolts, pins and spacers and stuff,” he said. The parts end up in mining, whitegoods, EFTPOS machines and more “the little bits and pieces that you don’t ever think about where they come from”. “We’re focused on large volume manufacturing, whereas a lot of engineering places, anything more than 10 is too many for them,” he said. “Originally, it was my father’s business.” David trained as a jet engine mechanic, but found the business provided him with a creative outlet. He’s been there 25 years and bought it from his dad.

Bethany is a star on the rise By David Nagel When Bethany Hoefer agreed to try out for the National Christian School Sports netball carnival in Sydney earlier this year - never did she imagine becoming the most valuable player in the State. But the Chairo Christian College student took all before her, defending and pressuring the best goalers from around the country to earn top honours in the Under 15 division of the championships. But Bethany was only 12! “The school asked the students if they would like to try out for the different sports so I just thought I’d give it a go,” Bethany said. “When we got to the first training session I thought it was Under 13s, but it was actually Under 15s we were trying out for. It was a bit scary at first against the older girls and I didn’t do too well in the first try outs, but I did much better in the second try outs and got picked as a training partner. “After the first training session I got a message saying that I was picked in the side which was really exciting.” Bethany, who lives in Nar Nar Goon and plays Under 13s for Paken-

Sydney with her mum Lea was the trip of young lifetime. “We got buses to Sydney with all

the other sports like soccer and basketball and it was really interesting to be around people from the different sports,” Bethany said. “It was a bit scary at first, not knowing many of the other girls, but it was a great experience and one I’ll never forget in a hurry.” The NCSS championships comprise five sports, with basketball, netball, soccer, tennis and volleyball all part of the great experience. Bethany wasn’t quite sure how’d she measure up to start with. “I was really nervous, the nerves were really kicking in, but they got better after we played more games,” she said. “It was a bit daunting to start with because two of the girls from New South Wales were already in development squads and there were some really good players in all the teams. “Our coach Laura was just like a second mother, she was amazing and just so energetic and really taught us to have fun, and to never stop pushing to get the best out of ourselves.” Despite playing in a competition with girls two years her elder, Bethany had a hunch she was in the running for the MVP, but it still came as a great surprise.

“Everyone was sitting together when they read out the MVP awards for each state and Victoria was the last to be read, out so we had to wait a while,” Bethany said. “I thought I was dreaming when they read my name out, everyone was cheering for me and it was just a really awesome experience.” Bethany’s brothers, James and Joel, play football for Nar Nar Goon, but Bethany would have none of it, staying at Pakenham with her friends. “It’s funny, because I love playing netball at Pakenham but I’m not really fussed about watching it,” she said. “Sport is my interest, and netball and football are the two sports I love most. I support the Vixens in netball and Hawthorn in the football.” Bethany wanted to thank some special people for getting her to this stage of her netball career. “I want to thank my family for pushing me to be a better person, they’ve really shaped my life, and the president of the Pakenham Netball Club, Jenny Burridge, for just being a fantastic support to every player at the club,” she said. “And I would also like to thank my coaches, they’ve all been great.”

By Russell Bennett Pakenham’s Big V basketball Youth League Division 2 men’s team recovered from a sluggish start to defeat Maccabi in a battle of the Warriors at ‘The Colosseum’ at Cardinia Life on Saturday night. Maccabi led 30-22 at the half after a some early struggles by the home team - particularly when it came to turnovers and shot selection - but Simo Pajdic’s men recovered after the main break to come away seven-point victors, 63-56. The home side shot just 8-35 from the floor in the first half - getting less than a quarter of their shots to fall. But they upped their game in the second with Tom Greer leading the way with 15 points and 12 boards, while big Lewis Newman finished with a double-double of his own with 12 points and 10 boards and Lee Belton and Tyrone Tonkin finished with 13 and 14 points respectively - including six combined threes. On Saturday night at the Toyota Hothouse in Mildura, Pakenham’s Division 2 men’s team suffered its first blowout loss of the season - a 20-point defeat to the hometown heat, 97-77. Epic battle: giants poised By David Nagel The two heavyweights of the South East Football Netball League will collide when Cranbourne and Berwick lock horns in a round 11 blockbuster at Casey Fields on Saturday. Grand finalists of the last two years, the Eagles and Wickers have been at each other’s throats since the Wickers bolstered their stocks at the conclusion of 2014. The recruitment of players like Ash Smith, Ben Kearns, Michael Johnson and Michael Riseley elevated the Wickers above Beaconsfield and Narre Warren to be the main challengers to Cranbourne’s title as the best team in the competition. The Wickers claimed the 2015 premiership over the Eagles before Simon Goosey’s men turned the tables in a classic decider last year. The Eagles lead the Wickers 6-3 since the start of 2015, but one premiership each is the stat that defines their recent battles. The Wickers are staring an unbeaten season in the face if they can get over the Eagles on their own deck this weekend. “One of the things we’re most proud of this season is our away record,” Ber-

wick coach Stewart Kemperman said. “We’ve beaten Beaconsfield, Narre Warren and Doveton at their home grounds, so taking on Cranbourne at Cranbourne is sort of like our final frontier when it comes to the top teams in the competition. They’ll be much better than the last time we played them, but we’re looking forward to the challenge.” That round two engagement gave us the first real indication of just how good the Wickers could be. They blanketed the Eagles, suffocated them to the point where they could manage just three goals in a desperate three quarters of footy. A storm rolled in, finishing the game at three-quarter time, the Eagles 47 points adrift. “We don’t dwell on that performance too much,” Cranbourne coach Simon Goosey said. “Yes they were too good for us on the day, there were no excuses, but it was a weird day, one side had the wind for three quarters. “We’re obviously looking forward to the challenge; we’re in a good spot at the moment and we think we can turn that performance around. We played into their hands that day, our pressure and work rate

was down and we know what we need to do to turn things around.” Kearns has since moved on, but Smith, Johnson and Riseley are big-game performers who will have a big say in the outcome. But it’s the Eagles -on the back of a big game from midfielder Shaun Marusic - to strike back with a thrilling two-point win. Round 10 saw teams inside the top five confirm their significant advantage over the remainder of the competition. Cranbourne defender Brandon Osborne kept Tooradin’s Setanta O’hAilpin goal-less in the Eagles’ 28-point victory at Westernport Oval, while Doveton veteran Ryan Hendy kicked five goals in the Doves’ 65-point win over a disappointing Officer. And Berwick’s Trent Thomas and Brody Connelly ran rampant in the Wickers’ 253-point thrashing of Hampton Park at Edwin Flack Reserve. Thomas kicked 11, and Connelly nine, while Ash Smith snagged five of his own in the most comprehensive victory of the season. Eagles have landed, with scalps in claws By David Nagel Cranbourne has claimed its first legitimate scalp of the season and thrown the race for this year’s premiership wide open with a stunning 41-38 victory over the previously unbeaten Tooradin at Casey Fields on Saturday. The Eagles four wins had come against the bottom-four teams in the competition, but a recent narrow loss to reigning champions Narre Warren gave Donna Wilson and her girls a truck-load of belief heading in. “I don’t have words for it, I’m unbelievably proud,” Wilson said. “I’m not the type of person to shed a tear, but I did do a happy dance. I could tell in the first two minutes that we had a great chance of winning, the girls were really switched on, and it was just an awesome game of netball.” The Eagles were magnificent all over the court. Dynamite defenders Sharni Lambden (goal defence) and Tara Cecil (goal keeper) were both at their brilliant best, having a great duel with Seagulls’ goalers Alex Duff, Jess Cox and Alex Maher. Mel Perrins (centre), Darcy O’Donnell (wing defence) and Nat Sparks (wing attack) had the better of the midcourt battles, while Tegan Stahl (goal attack) and Alanah Hardy (goal shooter) stayed cool and composed against the tough defence of Ebony Dolan and Bec Kinna.
