Dandenong powerhouses merge in landmark move

The world through a child’s eye Topsy-turvy wall art is spreading smiles in Springvale.

Students from neighbouring Springvale Rise Primary School worked with artist Julian Clavijo to create temporary public art installation Upside Down.

The colourful, larger-than-life painting of an upside-down grinning child will adorn the United Energy substation in the Warwick Avenue car park for the next two years.

The image aims to remind viewers to embrace the child-like feeling that resides in everyone, and to view the world through a child’s eye - with natural happiness, an innate sense of innocence and spontaneity.

The artwork is part of the Greater Dandenong Council Transformed Placemaking Program.

Dandenong Acting Sergeant Russell Bratton said hearing these words was one of the highlights of his career. He met Mary, not her real name, when responding to reports of a suspicious vehicle in Springvale.

There was a warrant for her arrest for failing to appear in court and comply with a corrections order.

“She’s living out of her car, struggling with heroin addiction, but she declined any police help at the time for referrals,” Act Sgt Bratton said.

She turned up at another suspicious vehicle check, in Keysborough.

“I open up the door and find the same girl, curled up in the back seat with her little dog on her lap looking frightened, dirty,” he said.

“She’d still been living out of her car, she’d failed to go to court again so there was another warrant out for her.

“I remember looking at her licence photo and seeing this fresh young girl.

“Six years later she was a mess. She looked like a scared young kid.”

Acting Sergeant Bratton took Mary, aged in her thirties, back to the police station.

“We made a decision that we had to apply to have her remanded,” he said.

Paramedic leapt for her life during truck smash A paramedic has recalled the moment she leapt for her life as a truck barrelled towards her and crashed into her ambulance at a Dandenong North accident scene.

Charlotte Paton spoke about the 8 May incident following a State Government move on 19 June to slow drivers to 40 kilometres an hour when passing stationary or slow-moving emergency vehicles with lights or sirens on after 1 July.

She was called to an accident involving one

patient on the Monash Freeway ramp onto EastLink, Frankston-bound, about 5.40am.

Ms Paton and her colleague were assessing the patient when a bystander shouted “run”.

“We all looked back at this stage and saw a massive truck coming towards us,” she said.

“I was kind of in disbelief when I first saw it and I just thought ‘I need to get out of the way’.

“So we ran down the emergency lane and jumped the barrier.

“I believe that the implementation of this 40km law will decrease the likelihood of near-misses in

Hoseah’s voice moves him to semis

By Casey Neill Cranbourne West’s Hoseah Partsch has made The Voice’s top eight singers.

The 18-year-old will compete in the Channel Nine talent contest’s semi-finals on Sunday 25 June.

“Thank you to everyone around Australia and NZ and everyone around the world for the support and keeping me safe for another week,” he wrote on his Facebook page.

Fans couldn’t speak highly enough of his most recent performance in the show’s live section.

Hoseah took a break from ballads and belted out up-tempo Stevie Wonder classic I Wish, starting out on the piano and making his way down a precarious flight of stairs to move with the music.

One fan said he took it to another level with the performance and dubbed him a consummate entertainer.

Another said he had “a gorgeous voice and heart to go with it, I hope we are going to see more

of him on our screens after the show, we don’t really have a young soul singer like him on the Aussie scene”.

Others dubbed him “the best singer out of the lot”, “the real deal” and “talented, clever and charming”.

“I just adore this young man. I’d buy a ticket to his concert tomorrow!” one wrote.

Another said: “More than ever Australia (and the world) needs beautiful young leaders like you to teach and promote a message of love.”

The Dandenong High School Year 12 student is on coach Boy George’s team.

He said he auditioned for The Voice “for my family”.

“We’ve had a rough lifestyle growing up, my mum being a single parent with four kids,” he said.

Hoseah said he felt free when he sang.

He hopes The Voice will help him attain a career in music.

The new rules require that after passing the emergency vehicle, drivers should not increase their speed again until reaching a safe distance from the scene.

The infringement fine is $277.

The new rule will apply to Victoria Police, Ambulance Victoria, Metropolitan Fire Brigade, CFA and SES vehicles.

It also applies to VicRoads Transport Safety Service vehicles with magenta flashing lights.

“She didn’t tick a lot of the boxes. She wasn’t a danger to the public, her offending wasn’t serious enough, it was only to ensure she got to court.

“Sometimes we don’t get remand on that basis.

“She needed to go to start the welfare process because she wasn’t going to help herself.”

The bail justice questioned the bail application but approved it.

“She went to prison for a short time,” Act Sgt Bratton said.

A year later, he bumped into her in Dandenong. “She said ‘if it wasn’t for you I’d probably be dead’,” he said.

“It’s probably one of the highlights of my career so far. Prison is rock bottom. The only place to go is up.”

Act Sgt Bratton, who grew up in Dandenong, said support from Mary’s parents was a big factor in her continued recovery.

Keith and Anne, who didn’t want their surname printed, said Mary completed community service and a methadone program once released.

“That week that she was locked up gave her that little bit of advantage of being away from the drugs,” Anne said.

She said the warrants stemmed from “when she stole my credit cards, that was back in 2014”.

“That was the first time we actually charged her,” she said.

“Police tried to tell us ‘you really don’t want to charge her’ and I said ‘yes we really do, that’s the only way we’re going to stop her’.”

She’s now been living with them for the past 18 months. “It hasn’t been an easy time for her. These horrible drugs, they get such a hold on people,” Keith said.

Man dies days after accident A man has died in hospital following a Keysborough car crash.

Police believe a silver 1998 Toyota Camry sedan was travelling south on Perry Road when it took a right-hand bend and lost control about 7.50am on 7 June.

The driver was taken to hospital with life-threating injuries and died in hospital on Saturday 17 June.

Police urged anyone who witnessed the collision to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

A Dandenong South cafe was among five targets in a string of south-east armed robberies.

Detectives from the Frankston Embona Taskforce are investigating the incidents which started with the Abbotts Road hold-up on Saturday 10 June.

A man parked a silver Nissan Navara ute with false number plates ZVA 874 at the cafe’s rear just after 11am and entered armed with a knife and hammer.

He demanded cash and cigarettes and was given both before he left the premises.

The Navara was last seen travelling east towards the South Gippsland Highway.

The bandit was wearing a black mask and a hooded jumper.

Incidents followed in Braeside on Wednesday 14 June, where the culprit was described as 168 centimetres tall with a thin build, in Carrum Downs on Sunday 18 June, Frankston on Monday 19 June and Baxter on Tuesday 20 June.

No one was injured during any of the incidents.

Investigators released CCTV from the Frankston incident and an image of the vehicle from the Carrum Downs incident, which they believe was used each time.

A Dandenong man died while trying to help another motorist in Fulham, eastern Victoria.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the 33-year-old’s death just before 5.30pm on Sunday 18 June.

They believe he was a passenger in a westbound car that pulled up on the side of the Princes Highway to help another driver who’d driven off the bitumen in a roadwork zone.

As he was trying to cross the road with the driver of the vehicle he was in, an east-bound car struck him. He died at the scene.

The occupant of the car the men were intending to help was not injured.

A time to rhyme

By Casey Neill A Dandenong teen is delving into the dark side of human nature through poetry.

Iffat Abbsar, known as Effy, performed at the Dandenong Slam at Walker Street Gallery and Arts Centre on Saturday 17 June as part of the Emerging Writers’ Festival.

The Lyndale Secondary College Year 12 student said she decided to take part to get out of her comfort zone.

“The best part about the experience was just being around people who love writing as much as you,” she said.

“It made me feel so much more connected to our community in Dandenong.

“My friends came. They’d never been part of something like this before.

“Young people these days, they’re less involved in the community.”

The 18-year-old said the event also reminded her how lucky she was to experience such diversity in Dandenong.

“I’ve never experienced discrimination or anything like that,” she said.

“One of the performers was a refugee.

“She did a poem about being bullied when she was younger.

“How did she experience this discrimination when I didn’t?”

Effy was also a refugee, moving to Australia from Pakistan when she was three years old.

She started writing journals when she was “very, very young just to help me vent”.

“What I’m really passionate about is really philosophical ideas,” she said.

“I write to really express the darker aspects of the human psyche.

“By doing this I think it allows me to embrace

Iffat Abbsar, known as Effy. 169769 and beautify and accept these parts of myself, which is really important because we grow up being taught that these parts of ourselves need to be repressed, but these are really important parts of ourselves.

“I turn it into a character or a symbol or something and then I will speak about it from a third person perspective.”

Effy performed five poems at the Slam.

The Archetype was about the beautiful young woman in literature.

“I think that’s a very detrimental idea, that physical beauty is a sign of greater worth,” she said.

“Our ideas really need to change to accommodate the needs of society.

“It’s important that the beauty of all women becomes our norm now.”

The poems No One Cries When the Grim Reaper Dies and Beauty were about “loving the darker parts of yourself ” and “finding beauty inside all of the stigmatised, seemingly unpleasant things about life such as death and decay and complexity”.

School is ground zero for clean-up

By Casey Neill The disused Maralinga Primary School is a pile of rubble, despite a push from parents and councillors to reopen the school.

Excavators moved onto the Keysborough site to minimise vandalism and antisocial behaviour.

Maralinga closed at the end of 2014 and all pupils moved to nearby Chandler Park Primary School following a five-year merger process.

The Department of Education and Training (DET) declared the land surplus to its needs in 2015 but has not yet sold it.

In January last year, more than 100 parents backed an online petition started by Greater Dandenong councillor Roz Blades urging the State

Government to reopen the school.

On his Facebook page, Greater Dandenong councillor Matthew Kirwan noted “the sad destruction of my old school”.

“With the age demographic of this area sure to change, and this being the only school site in this neighbourhood, this decision will be regretted,” he said.

Local resident Gaye Guest said bulldozing the buildings made “the primary school community north of Popes Road between the railway line and EastLink the most marginalised community in this municipality”.

“The loss of this school facility is devastating, especially if the land is going to be sold for housing development,” she said.

By Casey Neill Greater Dandenong asylum seekers could be “rendered destitute” without more help to cope with the ‘lodge or leave’ deadline, says councillor Roz Blades.

At the Tuesday 13 June council meeting, Cr Blades successfully moved that the council write to the state and federal governments and local members to advocate for increased support for asylum seekers.

Cr Blades’ motion followed a Federal Government announcement on 21 May that illegal maritime arrivals (IMA) must lodge an application for a three-year Temporary Protection Visa (TPV) or a five-year Safe Haven Enterprise Visa (SHEV) before 1 October.

Those who miss the deadline will have their income support cut off, will not have another

chance to lodge an application and will be subject to the lengthy deportation process.

Cr Blades said agencies and volunteer groups expressed distress at the announcement at a recent meeting of the council’s Asylum Seeker and Refugee Advisory Committee.

Her motion said that more than 3000 asylum seekers lived in Greater Dandenong.

“The immediate concern is accessibility of legal aid and migration advice for hundreds of people who may need assistance with lodging a range of complex applications and forms,” the motion said.

“It is anticipated that an increased number of people in the community will be in need of material aid and at risk of destitution.”

Cr Blades said the motion was simply advocating support for asylum seekers.

“That’s the role of local government,” she said.

Cr Tim Dark opposed the motion, stating: “There has been no council report. There hasn’t been any real investigation; there hasn’t been any real consultation.

“It really is jumping on what’s potentially a non-existent issue,” he said.

Cr Dark said lodge or leave was about illegal maritime arrivals proving they were genuine and owed protection by Australia.

He said those affected had refused or failed to present a case for asylum, and many had been here for five years.

“The first thing you would do is complete the paperwork,” he said.

Cr Heang Tak, an immigration lawyer, hit back. “These people have fled by boat,” he said.

“You expect people to bring passport and birth certificates with them?

“That is out of touch.”

Dandenong North students took on the world at a robotics competition in Denmark.

The Roborannas from Wooranna Park Primary School finished 12th out of 118 teams at the First Lego League Open European Championship.

Nine students built and programmed a robot to perform specific tasks and competed in the Australian First Lego League Championships in December.

The judges invited them to head to Aarhus, Denmark, in May. They set up an online appeal for donations to pay for the trip and received enough community support to follow their dream.

Eight students made the trip including 11-year-old Hafiz.

“It was really exciting,” he said.

“It was the first time most of us went to Europe. One of our teammates had never been overseas before so he was really excited.”

28 June 1917 Rescue at sea During the homeward voyage of an Australian ship, while the vessel was steaming over a shark-infested sea near Sierra Leone at 15 knots, an Australian soldier named Hyland fell overboard.

A comrade named Mills immediately jumped overboard after him while a third soldier named Tuckfield, picking up a lifebuoy, also went overboard.

Mills, who is a powerful swimmer, reached Hyland and kept him afloat until Tuckfield came up with the lifebuoy.

Meanwhile, the ship was stopped and a boat lowered and the three men were picked up.

Only 16 minutes elapsed from the time Hyland fell overboard until he and his rescuers were again on board.

20 June 1967 School speech contest final The Dandenong district final of the National High School’s Public Speaking Contest will be held in the Dandenong Girls High School assembly hall on Friday 8pm.

The contest will be opened by the president of Dandenong Jaycees Mr Graham Bride.

The Jaycees are sponsoring the contest on a national basis. Three schools, Dandenong Girl’s High, Lyndale High and Dandenong High, will be competing for the privilege of moving into the area finals to be held in two weeks.

Each contestant will be asked to deliver a six minute speech on “I talk for Australia” and a four minute impromptu speech.

The prize for the winner of the national finals will be a six week trip around the world made available by P and O shipping line.

The winner will also be allowed to take his or her parents on the trip.

23 June 1997 Strictly entertainment Shades of West Side Story came to pulsating colourful life on the streets of Dandenong when dancers from the McPherson Dance Studio in Robinson Street went through their lively “Strictly Cabaret” routine as a prelude to their forthcoming appearance in a 30-minute show in Doveton Public Hall.

The show will be held next Saturday at 7.30pm and will also feature modern new vogue and Latin American styles of ballroom dancing.

As well as their West Side dresses, the 13 cast members of Strictly Cabaret have traditional ballroom gowns in their wardrobes.

The Sri Lankan stall moved into Dandenong Market about two years ago and introduced diners to the shredded roti dish.

Nirosh Munasinghe explained that kothu originated in the eastern part of Sri Lanka.

“I think it’s spread all over the world now, including India and Malaysia,” he said.

“They call it different names. They’ve created their own flavours.”

The PiqNiq Hut version features vegetables, egg and roti bread. “We even have wholemeal or the wheat flour bread,” he said.

“We have gluten free ... and there’s another thing that we use called string hoppers. It’s like rice noodle.

“It’s made out of rice flour and steamed in a

“Basically, it’s done with roti, but we created these type of things so more people could enjoy them.”

The base is mixed with one of four variations of meat curry on a barbecue hot plate while diners wait.

“The chicken curry, we have three different variations,” Nirosh said.

The standard chicken curry has a medium heat. The devilled chicken is spicy.

“We chop it with a blunt metal tool. That folds the flavour into the roti.

“Apart from all the meat curries, we make a mixed vegetable curry that has five or six vegetables in it.

“We buy the vegetables from the Dandenong Market itself.”

The dish is served with a swirl of yogurt and mint on top, to help those who might have overreached on the heat.

“The yogurt always neutralises the spiciness,” he said.

“Now I can see, people come asking for kothu roti. They even know the name,” he said.

Nirosh partnered with Vijay about four years ago to serve up Sri Lankan cuisine at festivals.

The Dandenong Market stall evolved from there.

“It is descended from Chinese menus. We’ve modified it for the Sri Lankan palate,” he said.

Then there’s butter chicken, which doesn’t have any chilli.

“That is not a Sri Lankan one, but it’s a modified butter chicken for the Australian palate,” Nirosh said.

“It was modified by my business partner Vijay (Sivaraj) from the Queen Victoria Market.

“He had been running a restaurant called Drums Cafe for the past 21 years.

“He got the Lord Mayor’s award this year.

“He’s the one who created this butter chicken.

“People love it. Sometimes, even Indians love it!”

The goat curry, though, is the most popular.

The roti is chopped on the hot plate before being stirred through the curry.

“It’s the original way of doing it, the authentic way of doing it,” Nirosh said.

Long-time CEO Jenny Semple is no longer at the helm.

VicRoads is asking for feedback on linking the road to the Monash Freeway from the Princes Highway.

Omid Cultural Association celebrated Refugee Week in Dandenong South with music, speeches and awards.

The Sunday 18 June event at the Russian Community Centre in Kirkham Road highlighted the contribution that refugees and asylum seekers made to Australian society’s social fabric. to mark Refugee Week, which ran from Sunday 18 June to Saturday 24 June.

Friends of Refugees appealed to those who’d previously donated food, furniture, time or money to give $10, and then share the news with 10 friends.

CEO Sri Samy said that increasingly adverse government policies had left the organisation struggling to maintain its services.

“For every person the group supports, there are five more who urgently need assistance,” she said.

“Currently, there are 80 to 100 people coming to us weekly for food, furniture, education programs, and the chance to learn new skills in our social enterprises.

“These activities and ventures provide training and lead to potential employment opportunities, so that the refugees are able to become a productive part of the economy.”

Court’s deluge decade

By Casey Neill Rain water has been inundating a Noble Park North court for the past 10 years but there’s no solution in sight.

Roulston Court residents are fed up with the flooding, Greater Dandenong councillor Maria Sampey told the Tuesday 13 June meeting.

“The residents feel that they’re not even being taken any notice of,” she said.

“Any time there’s a bit of a downpour, there’s flooding.”

Cr Sampey provided the Journal with an email from one resident, who did not want to be named, detailing the situation.

He has been lodging complaints since 2007 and has been extremely disappointed with the response, “particularly when we hear from council

managers we could be 20 to 30 years away from what seems like forever shifting goalposts”.

The resident said the council told them the problem was “mid-level” and was 30th or so in the queue for repair.

“Clearly this is not acceptable,” he said.

He told Cr Sampey that sometimes the water did not subside for five days.

“The resident does not want to say anything because he seems to think that it might jeopardise him by making it public,” she said.

The council’s engineering services director Julie Reid said Roulston Court had been the subject of occasional localised flooding in the past.

She said modelling showed that dwelling inundation was unlikely to occur.

“This flooding has largely been attributed to blockages that have occurred in the drainage sys-

tems,” she said. “On each occasion when these blockages have been identified, the drainage system has been unblocked and returned to a satisfactory working state.”

Ms Reid said the council also installed an additional grated pit at the low point of the court bowl two years ago.

“This has reduced the likelihood of further blockages in the drainage system,” she said.

“The council uses a risk-based approach to prioritise drainage upgrade works.

“This takes into account the likelihood of flooding and the resulting financial consequences of such events on residents and the community.

“Dwellings that are subject to inundation are considered high priority due to the impact it has on the community.”

Market kids get ready to get crafty Dandenong Market has these school holidays sorted with its free craft workshops that are sure to keep the kids entertained for hours on end.

Running every market day from 1 July to 16 July, kids of any age can join in craft workshops to create machines and animals of the air and sky ? it’s all about things that can fly!

Dandenong Market’s children’s craft specialists will teach parents and children to create flying and floating craft: from birds, hot air balloons, aeroplanes, super heroes, unicorns... the possibilities are endless with so many things able to soar!

During the July school holidays kids will have the opportunity to create straw gliders, bird puppets, butterfly wings, hot air balloon mobiles, flying super hero masks, unicorn masks, paper stunt planes, bird and butterfly streamers wands and owl mobiles.

New Valley Private Hospital CEO Kieron Martin.

New health chief shows he cares The Valley Private Hospital has a new CEO and will soon be home to a new cancer treatment centre.

Kieron Martin started work at the Mulgrave hospital on Monday 19 June.

“I was working previously in the northern suburbs at another hospital and then was recruited

by Healthe Care a couple of months ago,” he said.

“I’ve been a healthcare executive since the mid-’90s, originally in the UK and I came here in 2003.

“I started as a pathology technician back in the early 1980s and progressively worked through and increased my responsibility within pathology and then other care services.

“Above all, I care about people and enjoy seeing people get better.”

Mr Martin said there’d been significant investment in the hospital’s buildings and technology.

“We’re currently in the process of building an integrated cancer centre,” he said.

That’s likely to open early next year.

“And we’re building additional consulting rooms and on-site parking.

“We have significant expansion plans for the future.”

The Valley currently offers “everything from emergency services to high-end surgery including robotic surgery”.

“They’ve now got robots here where a surgeon will sit at a console and a robot will operate on a patient,” Mr Martin said.

“Probably our greatest case load is orthopaedic surgery, cardiothoracic surgery and neurosurgery.”

He said he was very excited to be joining the Healthe Care Australia group, part of the Luye Life Sciences Group “who are a very innovative organisation growing healthcare within America and Asia as well as Australia”.

Dandenong’s British butcher is bringing home the bacon awards.

Rob Boyle’s Suffolk black bacon was named the state’s best and the country’s second best at Australian Pork’s Australian Bacon Awards.

Judges selected the Rob’s British Butcher smoked middle back bacon as Victoria’s third best bacon.

The announcement kicked off Australian Bacon Week, which runs from 25 June to 1 July.

“A lot of the big companies, so-called best in the world, bring in a lot of Canadian and Chinese pork frozen and boneless,” he said.

“Then they thaw it out, cure it here and say ‘made in Australia’.”

Rob’s products are all made using Australian pork.

His Irish short back bacon was named best in Victoria at the 2014 Australian Bacon Awards.

“That was salted and cured and then air dried and cold smoked so it takes a fair while,” he said.

“The process takes about 14 days to do it.

“Then I saw Rick Stein on TV doing a best of British program.

“He was going to the experts in the trade and talking to them about their product.

“He went to a bacon place in Suffolk where they did a thing called Suffolk black bacon.

“It’s cured the same way I do it, in the salt and the brown sugar. Then it’s done for an extra 14 days in molasses.

“The taste is just so different.

“I tried it, and it just went off. We took it to the food and wine festival two weeks ago and sold out in a matter of hours.”

Entering the contest with it, he thought the judges would either love or hate its quirky flavour.

Rob said awards helped to bring in customers to his Lonsdale Street store, but quality products kept them coming back.

He said some butchers made one product for the judges and another for their shop, so he’d prefer judges drop by randomly for a sample.

“That’s a good indicator of the quality for the customers year-round,” he said.

Rob has been in Dandenong for 26 years this November.

“I used to work for a company in Dandenong called Peter’s Meats, which was part of the Castricum group.

“They closed down and I moved out and opened up my own shop,” he said.

“I went down the track of making continental smallgoods and tried to be Rob’s Continental Butchers.”

He switched to his British roots after about three years.

“My pommy accent, I’m sure it helps,” he said.

Rob will be handing out free bacon butties - or sandwiches - on Saturday 1 July to mark the end of Australian Bacon Week.

An organic sultana specialist is bringing dried fruit and fresh jobs to Dandenong South.

Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams visited Murray River Organics in Crompton Way, Dandenong South, on Monday 19 June to meet workers and hear the company’s plans for expansion.

The State Government chipped in support to establish the organic packaging and distribution facility and corporate office which will create 75 new jobs.

Murray River Organics managing director Erling Sorensen said the business took over the facility last August and became fully operational in February.

“We were one of the pioneering organic dry vine fruit vineyards in the country,” he said.

“It started back in the ’70s.

“We were founded on growing organic dried vine fruit in Sunraysia and we grew up to become the largest producer of organic dried vine fruit in the world.

“We have in excess of 3000 acres of vineyards in and around Mildura where we dry the sultanas and process and clean them in a production facility we have up there and transport the product down to Dandenong for packaging.”

Printing money from state grant Fruit company takes its pick for fresh jobs location A Keysborough manufacturer will add new staff and equipment thanks for a State Government grant.

Keysborough MP Martin Pakula visited digital fabric printer Bravo Print and Design to announce the Future Industries Manufacturing Program (FIMP) cash.

The funding will help the Bravo team to buy and install a direct to textile printer and an extra heat press.

The equipment is the first of its type in Victoria and will remove the paper printing process of manufacturing Bravo’s products, improving productivity.

The project is expected to help the business to increase its production capacity by 80 per cent and reduce paper usage by up to 75 per cent.

This will help Bravo to expand interstate and explore international market opportunities.

The business was established in 2006 and manufactures fabric signage products for the commercial and retail market.

The company provides its products to many major events, including the Australian Grand Prix, Australian Open Tennis and PGA Golf events.

Mr Sorensen said Dandenong South provided good infrastructure and staff supply.

“We looked at a number of different locations, both up near Mildura where our vineyards are, and in New South Wales,” he said.

“We deem ourselves a Victorian business and Dandenong offered a number of benefits to us.”

Murray River Organics employs more than 120 staff and has sales offices in Europe, the USA, Japan and China.

“We would be about 50-odd here at the moment,” he said.

“That’s 50 full-time employees and then we probably have about 25 or so casuals that are employed on the two shifts that we’re running.

“The business is expanding continuously.”

The range includes sultanas, rice and quinoa and couscous through to coconut, coconut oil and nut butters.

The company works with big manufacturing companies, from confectioners to bakeries and cereal producers, through to supermarkets and small cafes.

“We’re just about to launch a portal which will enable us to also sell direct to consumers,” Mr Sorensen said.

By Nick Creely NPL 2 EAST REVIEW - ROUND 20 There is no stronger endorsement for the ALeague bid of the Dandenong and Casey areas than the sensational football being played by both Dandenong City and Dandenong Thunder.

In what is one of the richest soccer regions in Australia, the quality of talent in the area further highlights belief that an A-League side on their door step is only a matter of time.

It was another massive weekend for the Dandy powerhouses, with City defeating Springvale White Eagles 3-1 in clinical fashion on Saturday afternoon.

It took until just the third minute for star striker James Kelly to send a ball crashing into the back of the net, in a deja vu moment to last week’s victory in which Kelly scored in just the fifth minute.

The goal set the tone for a series of attacking opportunities, with the Eagles holding up solidly defensively.

But the dam wall once again broke in the 40th minute when Kelly once again scored, bringing the score to 2-0.

The Eagles would have been counting their lucky stars it was half time, because as soon as play resumed, they found some renewed vigor and looked likely.

But in the 74th minute, Kelly snared his third via a penalty to extend the lead to 3-0 and close the door of any comeback mission for the Eagles.

With the game well and truly over, the Eagles scored a consolation prize, scoring in the 83rd minute from a penalty.

Meanwhile, down at George Andrews Reserve, Thunder produced a stunning comeback, coming from the clouds to defeat Box Hill United on Saturday night.

The second placed Thunder were going in as heavy favourites after a brilliant run of form in the last month.

But in the 73rd minute, the Thunder found themselves down 0-2 and staring down the barrel of a rare off night.

A sudden five minute blitz with goals to Simon Colosimo, Brandon Barnes and Adam Centofani saw the Thunder surge into an unlikely 3-2 lead after never looking likely, before a trademark Veton Korcari header in the 86th minute gave the Thunder a fourth goal in the space of 15 minutes, and a remarkable 4-2 lead.

As a result of another immense weekend for the Dandenong clubs, City sit atop the NPL 2 East ladder and are favourites for promotion, while Thunder sit second and breathe down the neck of their rivals.

Springvale White Eagles are sitting in sixth position as their up and down season continued.

Bulls charge to down the dogs

Up against fourth placed South Croydon 11.10(76) at Pat Wright Oval, the Bulls quickly saw themselves 14-points down at quarter time after kicking a woeful 0.6.

Another inefficient second term saw the Bulls kick 3.12 at half time, and fall 22-points down against a Doggies side looking to cement itself within the top four.

But an inspiring second half, led from the likes of Kyle Martin - returning from suspension - Tim Kelly and goal kicking machine Tim Harper (five goals), saw the Bulls storm away in dominant fashion with a seven goal to three last half.

Rowville 10.6(66) , meanwhile, fell to Norwood 14.10(94) by 28-points at Mullum Reserve.

SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIV 2 - ROUND 11 Keysborough’s renaissance into premiership favoritism continues to gain traction with another dominant 54-point win over Heatherton, 17.7(109) to 8.7(55).

The top two sides did battle in front of a healthy crowd, with no team able to get the running in a slow first quarter, with only the Magpies able to score a goal.

But the Hawks sprung to life, and with Shane Thomas (five goals) and superstar Rob Mackay (three goals) firing, piled on the pain in the last three quarters.

Members approve ‘one club’ bid Dandenong Women’s Cricket Club (DWCC) and Dandenong Cricket Club (DCC) have announced that they will officially merge as of 1 July, after Special Resolutions were voted through unanimously by members of both clubs on 19 June at the club’s AGM. A proposed merger was first brought forward in mid-May, with the representatives from both clubs working diligently over the last month to come up with a proposal that satisfied all parties.

The merged entity will keep the name Dandenong Cricket Club (DCC) and will maintain the panther mascot.

However, a new logo is planned to integrate some aspect of the DWCC brand and representatives from both clubs have been buoyed by the overwhelming support of members in working with a ‘one club’ approach.

“It has been fantastic to see how everyone involved has worked together and shown a real respect for both the history of both clubs and the vision we are working toward for the future,” the DWCC’s Kelly Applebee said.

Applebee will take up the position of Vice President for the new DCC and will be joined by both Emma Gallagher and parent Shahid Malik from DWCC on the new committee.

Current Dandenong Cricket Club president Michael Findlay will remain as president down at Shepley Oval.

“It has been a very positive process,” Findlay said.

“The commitment that has been shown from all involved to not only make this merge happen, but ensure it is as successful as possible, means that we are already tracking well in our preparations for 2017/18 and have an exciting future beyond.”

Recruitment of coaches for the women’s teams is underway and DCC hopes to announce these shortly, Findlay confirmed.

The two Dandenong powerhouses have merged in a landmark move for south-east cricket. 163545 Dandenong that allowed this merger to go ahead and that will be instrumental in its continued success.

The Panthers also announced that current skipper Tom Donnell, consistent all-rounder James Nanopoulos and bustling quick Brent Fairbanks have been awarded life membership at the club.

Nanopoulos in particular had an outstanding 2016/17 season, scoring 341 runs at 34.1 and taking 30 wickets at 21.9 while Donnell captained the club to the semi-finals.

All three have enjoyed outstanding yet unfinished careers that have spanned over a decade, and will both be crucial to the Panthers’ quest to go one better in 2017/18.

Safety and style, it appears Toyota is covering all bases with its revised light passenger vehicle, the Yaris hatchback.

It has class-leading safety systems available across the range and is clothed in an interesting shape from the Toyota ED2 design studio in the south of France.

The result is premium safety that’s standard on the top-of-the-range Yaris ZR we drove, and a $650 option on the Ascent and mid-range SX variants.

Yaris hatches are well equipped, featuring cruise control, a display audio system with controls on the steering wheel spokes, a multi-information display, air-conditioning, electric power steering, power windows and mirrors and a 12volt accessory socket.

Despite styling improvements, the starting price stays at $15,290, plus on road costs, for the Ascent and an unchanged $17,330 for the SX, with the option of automatic transmission remaining at $1530. The new auto-only ZR price of $22,470 reflects the addition of the safety equipment.

The French connection placed a greater emphasis on horizontal lines to express a wide, more planted stance and low centre of gravity.

This was done with a new front bumper mimicking a catamaran with broad sections flowing down from new headlights, flanking the wide, trapezoidal grille.

The new grille contributes to the Yaris's more steadfast appearance with stepped horizontal bars delivering a 3-D effect. Fog lamps on the ZR are packed in a more compact recess with a vertical line that follows the outer edge of the bumper and features a bright chrome trim detail.
