A Catholic organisation’s “misleading and anonymous robocall campaign” targeted the marginal seat of local Liberal MP Sarah Henderson, she complained this week.

Ms Henderson accused Catholic Education Melbourne of “misrepresenting” the Turnbull government’s school funding plan to teachers and parents in Corangamite.

The automated calls claimed that Gonski 2.0 was “unfair”, Ms Henderson said.

“Nothing could be further from the truth,” she said.

Planning blooper ‘leaves trains without bus links’

By Luke Voogt V/Line’s new weekend timetable will cause hardship and confusion for Geelong’s elderly and “most vulnerable”, according to transport advocate.

The increased train services next month were welcome but the timetable failed to link with local bus services, warned Paul Westcott, the Geelong convenor of Victoria’s Public Transport Users Association.

“Trains are planned to run every 40 minutes but most of our local buses only run every hour on weekends - that means connections between trains and buses will be impossible.”

The broken connections would disadvantage anyong without a car, especially given the infre-

quency of weekend services, Mr Westcott said.

“Public transport depends on a network effect, which requires quick and convenient transfers between different routes and modes.

“Whoever decided that trains would run every 40 minutes has completely ignored that fundamental requirement.”

A 30-minute train frequency would overcome or 40-minute would overcome the problem, Mr Westcott said.

But decreasing weekend bus frequency to 80 minutes would be “totally unacceptable”, he said.

“The Minister for Public Transport, Jacinta Allan, must fix this looming problem.

“What is threatened in August isn’t public transport integration, it’s public transport disintegration.”

On 9 May the Premier and Ms Allan an-

nounced the delivery of 69 Geelong services every week across the V/Line network from 27 August.

The changes will add 30 services on weekends, meaning trains at least every 40 minutes between 7am to 7pm every day.

“We’ve added more regional services than any government in Victoria’s history,” a spokesperson for Ms Allan said.

“These extra services will reduce waiting, reduce crowding and get regional passengers home safer and sooner.”

A Transport for Victoria spokesperson said changes in bus frequency reflected the demand for transport within the region.

The authority would continue to review weekend bus timetables to make improvements in coordinating buses and trains, they said.

“In 2017, Catholic schools across Australia will receive $6.3 billion and in Victoria $1.84 billion from the Commonwealth.

“In 2027, this increases by 53 per cent to $9.74 billion across Australia and by 59 per cent to $2.93 billion in Victoria.

“Between 2017 and 2027 Catholic education funding across Corangamite increases by 39.8 per cent.”

Catholic Education Commission of Victoria confirmed the automated calls in Corangamite.

The calls took “the fair funding campaign to ordinary Australians” said commission executive director Stephen Elder.

He accused the Turnbull Government of failing to consult Catholics on the funding changes.

“Education Department figures leaked to the media show Catholic schools will suffer as a result of this rush, losing $4.6 billion over the next decade, with more than a quarter of this - $1.6 billion - coming from Victoria,” Mr Elder said.

“We are deeply concerned about the new em-

phasis placed on school socio-economic status scores under the Turnbull/ Birmingham proposals and the inaccurate picture they paint about Catholic parents’ capacity… to pay fees.”

Mr Elder said the government’s figures were “misleading”.

The government was on the verge of successfully passing the Gonski 2.0 legislation when the Indy went to press on Thursday.

Double Take Curmudgeonly types usually bristle at attempts to re-name things, usually for politically correct ends.

But one attempt this week at a new moniker for a lowly but lovely local deserves support.

The unfortunately named ‘water rat’ should be regarded as “Victoria’s otter”, contends Australian Platypus Conservancy.

Unlike rats, the reclusive native mammal is actually “extremely attractive”, the conservancy points out, noting the similarity of its appearance and role as a top-level aquatic predator to that of the foreign otter.

The potential of a water rat renaming could be significant. After all, numbers appear to be dwindling and who wouldn’t rather save the native otter than a type of rat?

And think of the tourism opportunity - surely visi-

tors would like to see otters in the Victorian wild.

Anyway, the conservancy’s running a study on water rat, sorry, otter numbers, and wants any sightings reported at platypus.asn.au.

Environmentalists who campaigned against Anglesea’s coal mine might have a new local cause,

all thanks to Surf Coast Shire’s financial management.

The shire announced this week that it would continue dumping rubbish in its tip amid native bushland at Anglesea until mid-2025 at least, foregoing the opportunity to send local rubbish to a new regional facility proposed for a quarry site near Stonehaven.

Mayor Brian McKiterick confirmed the decision was all about money, which would amount to $2.5 million over 10 years if the shire closed the Anglesea tip “early”.

Cr McKiterick’s concerns might be understandable given the shire’s budgeting for expenses growth of $4.4 million next financial year compared to a paltry $600,000 increase in revenue.

After all, the money’s gotta come from somewhere - and in this case it’s the environment!

Leaders in dark on ‘single voice’

Permanent libraries call

By Luke Voogt Council administrators must vote next week to keep three libraries permanently open after they had been earmarked for closure, according to campaigners trying to save them.

Former councillor Ron Nelson issued the call after City Hall officers recommended that the Highton, Chilwell and Barwon Heads libraries should remain open until 2018.

The three administrators will vote on the recommendation next Tuesday.

Mr Nelson doubted the administrators would heed the call to save the libraries, saying they had a tendency to defer “hard decisions”.

“I think they’ll just pass it on to the next council but at least that would show they’ve finally listened to the community."

tion being followed “really highlights the fact that (the majority) of the administrators are from Melbourne”, Mr Nelson said.

“They don’t understand the needs of Geelong.”

The council should consider selling disused buildings to improve its bottom line rather than closing libraries, Mr Nelson said.

Library campaigner Lynne Dowling echoed calls for the administrators to keep the libraries open but welcomed the officers’ recommendation.

“The 6000 signatures and the hundreds of letters and emails have made a difference,” she said.

“There's been more opposition to these closures than they ever could've imagined. They’ve been forced to listen because of ordinary people spending a lot of time and energy opposing what they see as an undemocratic and unjust decision.”

Ms Dowling vowed to continue the campaign until the administrators voted next week.

Highton’s Jacqui Bennett urged her fellow campaigners to attend the meeting at City Hall.

“First we’ve got to make sure the administrators agree to that proposal.”

Locals should use the libraries as much as possible if the administrators granted the “reprieve” she said.

Ms Bennett welcomed the recommendation for the next council to decide the fate of Highton, Newtown and Barwon Head libraries.

“It should have been a decision by a council elected by the people as a voice for the people.”

The council report recommended keeping the libraries open to allow further monitoring of their operations ahead of another report in March.

Geelong Regional Library Corporation made the initial recommendation to close the libraries, citing limited use.

A private lobby group failed to brief two larger counterparts on its plan to combine all three as one voice for Geelong, according to their leaders.

Committee for Geelong presented the plan to state parliament on Thursday as part of its Winning From Second report.

But regional councils alliance body G21 and Geelong Chamber of Commerce said they were in the dark on the proposal.

“There has been little detail provided to the chamber about the One Geelong proposal,” said president Kylie Warne.

A “diversity of voices” was important to Geelong, where various groups already collaborated frequently, she said.

“This collaboration has achieved significant outcomes for Geelong and the region over the last decade."

G21 chair Bill Mithen said his organisation was “always open to ways of advancing the region”.

“However, the G21 board has yet to be briefed by the Committee for Geelong on its report and its (One Geelong) proposal.”

A “diverse range of voices arguing articulately” had previously won funding for various major projects in Geelong, Mr Mithen said.

Committee for Geelong’s Winning from Second report cited overseas research showing the benefits of a “one-stop shop for local entrepreneurs and innovators".

“Pooling resources into an overarching One Geelong entity would produce an efficient and effective economic development effort for Geelong,” the report said.

Earlier this year former mayor Darryn Lyons described Geelong as “the city of committees”, decrying its multitude of lobby groups as a “tremendous waste of money”.

Iraqi refugee Milad Butrus says fireworks still scare his son - they remind him of when ISIS bombed their town.

Milad operated a small wi-fi business in Bakhdida, 30km south east of Mosul, before ISIS invaded on 6 August 2014.

He hoped a Geelong business course - newly tailored for refugees - could help him create a return to work.

“Here everything is different, people are friendly," he said. “If you ask for something they try to help you.”

Milad’s family is part of the Syriac Christian ethnic minority. After taking Mosul ISIS gave the Christian inhabitants of Bakhdida three options: convert to Islam, pay money or leave, he said.

“If not, they kill you. We are just people without guns or anything. At about 6am they started (launching) rockets (at) the city.”

Explosions echoed throughout the town until 10am, with one rocket landing 500m from Milad’s house, killing three children.

At 3am on 7 August he began the journey to Jordan with his wife and two children, parents and four siblings still living in the town (out of seven).

He and his family subsisted there without the legal right to work for two years.

“The UN didn’t help, so I applied directly to the Australian embassy.”

On 28 June 2016 he migrated to Australia with his parents, family and younger brother (15).

Two of his sisters married in Kurdish controlled parts of Iraq, while another married in Jordan.

Milad hoped to one day earn enough to sponsor his three sisters in the Middle East to come to Australia.

He joined 20 refugees from Iran, Iraq, Liberia, South Sudan, Myanmar, India and Afghanistan this week participating in the KickStart Your Business course for the first time.

Geelong Chamber of Commerce and Greater Geelong teamed up to provide the course to celebrate National Refugee Week.

Ice addict’s ‘Foundation for hope’ Help limited with shortage of beds

By Luke Voogt Recovering Newtown ice user Russell Britton is “getting back the guy” he has “always been” at Mt Duneed’s Foundation 61.

“He’s always been there but he’s been hidden behind ice,” the 36-year-old told the Indy on Tuesday.

Russell considered himself extremely lucky to be at the clinic - he almost missed out on rehab when he first searched with his family.

“There were places that said we want you to come but the waiting time is six months.”

Russell “had a loving family” and was “a popular guy” at school. But the wrong crowd led him to experiment with drugs and drop out in year 10.

He experimented with increasingly hard drugs, before coming across ice when he was 29 years old.

“I guess (a) friend put me on to who they scored from,” he said.

“Before you know it you’ve got a couple of people you can go to when you need it.

“For the last six or seven years I’ve been smoking ice every day.”

He lived in Lara and worked as a practice manager for a Melbourne neurosurgeon. Ice kept him awake for several nights in a row.

“When you’re on ice you feel like you’re achieving a lot but you’re probably not as on the ball as you think,” he said.

Most of that time he was “living two lives” as the sole career for his son.

“I was trying to be a good father but also living this life that revolved around me having enough gear to get through.”

Russell eventually lost his job and had to move in with his parents. But losing custody of his son recently was the biggest wake-up call.

“I went (to court) off my head and didn’t seek legal representation,” he said.

“My son is everything to me and I felt like I couldn’t let him down any more than I had.”

Eleven weeks into 26 week program Russell said: “It’s been the best move I’ve ever made.”

The “fleeting moments” where he felt like using were becoming fewer as the weeks

went on, he said.

“No one here judges you or belittles you or makes you feel you’re not worthwhile. I’m putting things in place.

“I hope I get a job and can be close to my son.”

Geelong drug and alcohol addicts are struggling to get the help they need with waiting lists for local rehab centres stretching out to six months.

About 100 people were on Foundation 61’s waiting list, said the centre’s Cameron Sawyer.

“I’ve had so many people call whose close family members need help, and then you have to say to them you’ve got to wait three to sixth months.”

Mr Sawyer said the problem was nationwide, with rehab clinics in Melbourne reporting average waiting times of three months or not taking clients at all.

Foundation 61’s 26-week rehabilitation program requires clients to detox first.

Mr Sawyer warned that it could be extremely dangerous for addicts to detox themselves.

But those applying to detox in the Salvation Army’s withdrawal program faced a four to five week wait, according to the Salvos’ Neil Loxston.

Different time periods for different stages of program and fewer beds in the final stage created a bottle neck for clients progressing through it, he said.

“We often get people who are very motivated but there are not enough beds, which increases their risk of relapsing.”

But Mr Loxston said the State Government was providing extra funding for rehabilitation beds across the state.

He said the Department of Health and Human Services was planning a rehab facility in the Geelong region.

“They are at that this moment investigating what piece of land they can purchase to site one.”

Recently City Hall rejected a proposed rehab facility in Highton, due to a community campaign.

Multi-million dollar carbon fibre deal makes for some flash bikes Deakin University and LeMond Composites have signed a $58 million deal to use local carbon fibre technology in world-class bicycles.

Three-time Tour de France winner and founder of the company Greg LeMond signed the agreement with Deakin Vice-Chancellor Professor Jane den Hollander Wednesday.

Prof den Hollander said the new technology, developed by PhD student Maxime Maghe and Carbon Nexus general manager Steve Atkiss, was a “game-changer” for manufacturing.

“This is a huge global success story, and it was incubated right here at Waurn Ponds, by one of our very own future leaders.”

Prof den Hollander said the new technology could revolutionise the advanced manufacturing sector by making carbon fibre more affordable.

“And carbon fibre could ultimately be made right here in Geelong, at our Waurn Ponds Campus, where over a decade of government, industry and our own investment has created a map for manufacturing of the future.”

LeMond Composites will also consider a carbon fibre manufacturing plant in Geelong which could create dozens of jobs for the city.

In 1986, Mr LeMond was the first cyclist to win the Tour de France on a carbon fibre bike.

The American said the ability to scale low-cost carbon fibre production had been the biggest hurdle to bring the material to the masses.

“Deakin University’s manufacturing process will make it possible to localise manufacturing and make carbon fibre technology more accessible to a wider range of industries.”

Leon still on a meals roll

Belgians behind mistaken search A Belgian accent has sent police searching the Otways for what they mistakenly thought was a lost father and son.

The search began early Monday when emergency services received a call about a bogged vehicle and its lost occupants.

The caller’s phone ran out of power during the triple-zero call, prompting police to begin searching. Police issued a call for public assistance on Monday, saying they were looking for a father and son who apparently set off bushwalking about 1pm Sunday.

Police thought the caller had said the pair was missing somewhere near Forrest Apollo Bay Road.

But later Monday a female staff member of a backpacker hostel called to say the subjects of the search might be three Belgian tourists who returned to their accommodation around 6pm.

Police spoke to the Belgian trio … and confirmed one of them had called triple-zero.

Belmont’s Leon Herviou, 83, has delivered meals to Geelong’s elderly for the last 20 years, and has no plans of stopping yet.

“I might be 83, but I feel 60,” the former regional retail manager told the Indy.

“You want to keep yourself interested in life and as you get older you don’t want to be sitting in a bloody chair all day.

“I’ve been an active person all my life, and I will be like that as long as can be.”

Leon’s involvement with Meals on Wheels started 34 years ago when he began “jockeying” for wife Irene.

“I would drive her - she used to sit in the passenger seat and do the paperwork,” he said.

“When I retired (20 years ago) I said we might as well work as a team.”

The couple remained a team until Irene’s death last year. But her passing did not dampen Leon’s commitment.

“She was the same as me - she just loved volunteering,” he said.

“I get out and do what’s got to be done - It gives you a sense of achievement.”

Leon praised his fellow deliverers, one of who has volunteered for Meals on Wheels for 45 years, he said.

The elderly access the meals for a variety of reasons ranging from frailty to illness, he added.

“All they have to do is heat them and eat them.”

But the social aspect of the program was just as important as the meals, Leon said.

“Some of these people don’t have a lot of visitors, their families work during the week and they don’t get to see them very often.

“In some cases, they even become friends. Although obviously we can’t sit and talk for half an hour because we’ve got other customers to get to.”

Recently, falling Commonwealth subsidies for meals have threatened Meals on Wheels existence.

But in May the Federal Government announced new funding that would allow the program to continue until at least 2020/21.

Event focus for stadium trust

DELIVERING WARMTH: Leon Herviou has volunteered for Meals on Wheels for 20 years.

“Delivering more major events” is a key priority for the new boss of Kardinia Park Stadium Trust.

Michael Brown put additional sport, music and cultural events on the stadium agenda after taking over from former trust chairman Steve Bracks this week.

Completing the stadium’s redevelopment and opening up the park to “great use by local community groups” were also priorities, Mr Brown said.

The stadium and park should become “a regional sports hub that services all sports in the Geelong and Barwon region and be a true community and business partner to Geelong,” he said.

“Australia is in the middle of an energy crisis and power bills are going through the roof under the Turnbull Government,” he said.

“We need a plan for cheaper, cleaner and more secure power, and that must mean more renewables.

“Malcolm Turnbull’s idea to subsidise new coal has been comprehensively rejected. It would increase pollution, it would increase power prices, and taxpayers would be left footing the bill.”

Mr Turnbull should instead stare down Liberal “climate-change deniers”, Mr Marles said.

“The fact that Turnbull is still contemplating putting taxpayer money to new coal plants says more about Turnbull’s inability to stand up to the hard right of his party than Australia’s energy needs.”

Ms Henderson, the Liberals’ Member for Corangamite, raised Mr Turnbull’s parliamentary comments about Geelong in February, when he said many of the city’s businesses depended on “affordable power”.

“household and economic security” Ms Henderson said.

“With a significant amount of baseload generation being phased out over the next 15 years, we need to ensure we are prepared and have enough power to meet future needs,” she said.

Ms Henderson raised the experiences of South Australia, which has endured power failures after demolishing its last coal-fired plant and expanding its reliance on renewable energy sources.

“Our priority is to ensure all Australians have access to reliable and affordable energy supplies,” Ms Henderson said.

The Indy this month reported concerns at Viva Energy that rising power costs were hurting the company’s attempts to make Corio’s oil refinery viable. The refinery provides employment for about 700 staff and contractors.

Labor’s Corio MP has attacked the Turnbull Government for planning more coal-fired electricity as Australia confronts an “energy crisis and soaring power bills”.

Frontbencher Richard Marles instead called for more renewable energy to produce “cheaper, cleaner and more-secure power”.

He was responding to Liberal counterpart Sarah Henderson’s parliamentary questioning of Mr Turnbull this week about the government’s “immediate action” on power supplies.

The action includes asking the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) how new “continuous dispatchable power” could be provided and what “support” it would need.

The AEMO action was proof the government wanted to fund new coal-fired power, Mr Marles said.

Letters All for Belmont I write regarding Michael Gamble’s letter in last week’s Indy about the closure of Kalkee Korner Shoppe, in Francis Street, Belmont.

As a volunteer for 16 and a half years of the shop’s 17 years in operation, I can say that all the money raised went to Murray Hostel, Nangatta, and Costa Court, all of which are in Belmont to help the sick and aged.

All from the shop hope we can find somewhere in the same area to continue our great work.

Red-hot consensus needed I have just a few observations to augment Deakin University’s research on how climate change may be affecting birdlife (Double Take, 16 June).

It’s not only birds that are confused.

A red gladiolus was flourishing in my garden in April/May this year. It was way out of season but it lasted longer in the cooler Indian summer environment.

Now the old bottlebrush tree is producing fluffy red blossoms out of season.

One bird mentioned in the Deakin report was the ruddy turnstone. If 'ruddy’ refers to red, and is not a curse, this could be a significant link because the Deakin boffins have also discovered beak shrinkage in the red knot species of Australian parrots.

This phenomena could be worth following up because climate change seems to affect red plants and birds.

Indy readers could aid this theory by looking out for quirky behaviour in red robins, crimson rosellas, king parrots, redback spiders, tomatoes, beetroot, red peppers, and river red gums.

Their observations could produce some redhot evidence, or merely a red herring.

Moral backlash begins On 24 May the Tasmanian Government rejected a bill to legalise euthanasia, giving hope that traditional values were still heard in our parliaments.

Tasmania also joined New South Wales and South Australia in abandoning the divisive and highly sexualised Safe Schools program.

Professor Juliet Richters, of the University of New South Wales and with more than 30 years of experience in the field, recently criticised the program’s author for the inaccuracy of her claim that half of young people in Australia were gay.

These events highlight the need for successful vigilance when false minority opinions and values can be instituted into the education of the young.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews should take note of other leaders and recognise the harm that biased opinions can do through his decisions.

The public backlash against the persistent lobbying of the morally liberal was slow to come but will hopefully continue to be heard by our leaders.

Gibb’s tribute to Coleman legend

By Luke Voogt Chelsea Gibb has joined fellow songstresses Amanda Harrison and Melissa Langton for the first time to pay homage to legendary composer Cy Coleman.

The Hamlyn Heights mother of three was thrilled to perform hits of the edgy jazz superstar.

“I don’t think anyone has come after him who had the same talents,” she said. “His music fits me like a glove.”

Gibb, who began her music theatre career as a jazz singer, said “this is the best sort of music I could ever dream to sing."

Fresh off her role as Sally Bowles in Cabaret, Gibb said she was making a “fully-fledged” return to musical theatre.

Gibb has performed across Australia and more than 30 countries, with credits like Chicago, Anything Goes and The King and I to her name.

She never left the business completely, but toned down her performing after the birth of her eldest child 12 years ago.

“I just sort of try to fit it in between being a mother,” she said.

Cyrens - The Swinging Songbook of Cy Coleman, will be Gibb’s first time performing alongside Harrison and Langton.

“I’ve known them for many years,” she said.

“Their voices are just phenomenal.”

“We’ve had two weeks to get it together and have sort of been going hard-core over the last couple of weeks.”

Cy Coleman was an edgy jazz composer and long-time friend of Playboy creator Hugh Hefner.

The trio will recount parts of Coleman’s life and sing hits like Big Spender to a four-piece band led by Langton’s husband Mark Jones.

“He’s done an amazing job with three-part voice harmonies,” Gibb said.

“The reason I love musical theatre is because of the story telling.”

Gibb’s solo performances in the show include Every Breath I Take from The City of Angels and The Oldest Profession.

“I’m sort of performing as a prostitute which is a bit of fun,” she said.

“Being able to slip away inside someone else while singing is just a joy.”

Harrison made her professional debut in Aspects of Love before going on to play Betty in Sunset Boulevard opposite Hugh Jackman.

She has performed in Les Miserables, Mamma Mia and The Boy From Oz, but is perhaps best known as Australia’s first Elphaba in Wicked.

“Mark, Melissa and Chelsea are dear friends of mine, so to be able to put on a show together has been a real joy,” she said.

Langton has performed in City of Angels, We Will Rock You, 42nd Street, Les Miserables and more, across Australia and the world.

Cyrens - The Swinging Songbook of Cy Coleman runs at Chapel off Chapel, Pahran, for five performances from 27 June 27 to 1 July.

Gibb said the trio hoped to perform the show at Geelong’s Piano Bar as well.

FINALLY FRIDAY Mornings' glory Musical Mornings will return to delight Geelong audiences in August with critically acclaimed artists and tributes to the stars.

The season opens with the Syncopators chronicling the musical life of one of the most popular artists of the 20th century, Bing Crosby.

A Tribute to Bing Crosby features a range of hits from the prolific performer, from his stint as one of the Rhythm Boys, to the ’30s and ’40s where he became a household name.

The tribute plays at Geelong Performing Arts Centre at 10.30am on 2 and 3 August.

Then in September the multi-award-winning music theatre actress Rachael Beck will bring her critically acclaimed show This Girl to the Playhouse stage.

In October it’s The Peter Allen Songbook tribute with songs from Peter Allen and friends, including hits from Judy Garland and Liza Minelli.

Then the Choir of Hard Knocks, consisting of homeless and disadvantaged people, will hit the stage under the guidance of conductor Jonathon Welch in November.

And as always the season will finish on a festive note with the Gaslight Company’s Christmas Extravaganza.

BUILD A BRIDGE: Virginia Gay stars alongside distinguished actresses Nancye Hayes and Sue Jones in the riotous comedy Minnie & Lariz.

Bridge hots up for nans Distinguished actresses Nancye Hayes and Sue Jones will star in the riotous tale of two fiercely competitive bridge-playing grannies in Geelong next week.

Hayes plays Minnie Chohen, in her nineties, who loses her partner in an unfortunate swimming accident. “(The play is) very funny and it’s constantly challenging for me as a performer,” she said.

“Learning to play bridge for me is going to be quite daunting, so I hope (the audience) won’t get a laugh at some of my possible mistakes.”

The best player in their retirement village, Liraz Weinberg (Jones), wants them to team up, but

Minnie abhors her and wants something in return.

Minnie has a granddaughter and Liraz has a grandson, both hopelessly single. Laying all her cards on the table, Minnie is bidding hearts.

Virginia Gay (Winners and Losers), Rhys McConnochie (Endgame), Georgina Naidu (Newton’s Law) and Peter Paltos (Calpurnia Descending) complete the cast of this story of Jewish grandparents and raw ambition.

Minnie and Liraz is the work of award-winning playwright Lally Katz, who won praise from the veteran actress.

“I think she’s a brilliant young writer,” Hayes said.

Anne-Louise Sarks directs the play when it comes to Geelong this month after premiering at Arts Centre Melbourne in May. “I was immediately drawn to the incredible, charming and complex women at the centre of Minnie and Liraz,” she said. “I can’t wait to bring it to life.”

“Lally’s writing is truly original, and her latest play is deeply funny, honest and heart-warming plus there’s the excitement of the bridge championship and a twist that even I did not see coming.”

Minnie and Liraz comes to Geelong for five performances in the Drama Theatre from 28 June to 1 July.

Painted promise

ENCHANTING: Momoko Rose’s pensive portraits will appear at next month’s Surf Coast Youth Exhibition. skateboarding and painting, producing soughtafter Jean-Michel Basquiat inspired paintings.

Fellow artist Edward Matthew also works out of a home studio, in Jan Juc. His recent body of work echoes the natural surroundings of his coastal backyard.

His illustrative artworks juxtapose sharp geometric shapes and finely detailed line-work with spontaneous bursts of colour.

He uses the opposition of abstraction and realistism to create a minefield of colour and shape.

The exhibition runs from 1-16 July, between 11am and 4pm daily, with creative workshops at 1pm most days.

The artists will be at the event to meet locals on 8 July, from 4pm to 6pm.

Four of the Surf Coast’s most promising painters will combine for the inaugural Surf Coast Youth Exhibition this school holidays.

“This is a very exciting display of the wealth of upcoming, emerging talent we have growing in our community,” said exhibit co-ordinator Cinnamon Stephens.

“They all have a fresh vibrancy to their art in very different ways.”

First in the quartet is this year’s Surf Coast Youth Arts Award winner, Momoko Rose.

The 18-year-old from Jan Juc draws inspiration from nature and human emotion to paint flowers and human portraits.

A multi-talented artist, Rose is studying music at Oxygen College, where she will record her debut EP. Earlier this year she ran a joint exhibition at Kubu Studio in Geelong with Martha Dawson, who will again join her at the Surf Coast Youth Exhibition.

Dawson’s art explores the connection surfers have with the ocean through the medium of Mandala, a geometric image traditionally associated with Buddhism and Hinduism.

The RMIT fine arts student uses the artform to depict the raw feeling and emotion of immersion in the ocean.

Joining Dawson is Harry McEvoy, who earned a spot in the National Gallery of Victoria’s Top Arts exhibition due to his VCE Studio Art in 2016.

McEvoy recently held his first solo show Super Raw at Geelong’s Boom Gallery.

If the reviews on social media are anything to go by, Sakuratei Japanese Cuisine in Manifold Heights is a gem.

The addition to Geelong West’s culinary culture has been reviewed as one of the best Japanese restaurants outside Japan.

Ferry adventure for a song Portarlington’s ferry is the perfect nautical adventure for the school holidays with all-new family return passes for just $69.

“We’ve been seeing whales, seals and dolphins - even penguins,” says Port Phillip Ferries’ Connie Trathen.

“So many people have never been on the bay before - it’s the ideal way for experience it, knowing you’re on a safe comfortable vessel,” Connie says.

“And if they’re lucky enough they’ll get to meet the captain,” Connie says.

Once at Docklands, it’s only a short walk to the Melbourne Aquarium, ice skating, the Melbourne Star, glow-in-the-dark mini golf, the Artvo inter-

The ferry is great for an outing with the grandparents too, with half-price tickets for seniors every Monday and Tuesday from 26 June until the end of winter.

“When our ferry pulls up in Docklands, they can just hop on Melbourne’s tram network which free for CBD,” Connie says.

And young Cats fans can avoid packed trains to the footy when Geelong takes on Hawthorn at the MCG on 15 July.

“We really want to see the vessel full of blue and white,” Connie says.

Sky’s the limit for kid flying fun With Airodrome’s new state-of-the-art ‘waterfall’ trampolines, Geelong youngsters can catapult into foam pits like never before these school holidays.

Thanks to the new technology, which Airodrome installed about a week ago, kids can now launch themselves even higher.

The trampolines are the newest addition to Airodrome’s South Geelong centre, which has slam dunk areas, a kids’ foam pit, dodge ball challenges and more.

For the co-ordinator of Geelong’s Life Cycle 55+ ride, Chelsea Fisher, nothing beats getting out in the fresh air and exploring the region’s bike paths and trails.

“There’s a lot of tracks in Geelong that people aren’t aware of,” the Newtown local says. “And also the coffee shops - there’s some great coffee shops.”

Chelsea has led the ride, which leaves from outside Little Creatures at 10am each Friday, since November.

Every week she comes up with a fun local ride tailored to the weather and the riders’ abilities.

“I always rock up with ideas,” she says. “Along the waterfront is my favourite - it’s just gorgeous.”

The riders enjoy a coffee and chat during breaks almost as much as the ride itself, according to Chelsea.

“It’s the all about the friendship, the fitness and the mental health. And it’s always great to have new people join our group,” she says.

High-tech vehicle service focuses on attention to the fine details Local mechanic Mark Goodear brought 28 years of working on luxury vehicles with him when he joined Geelong West Automotive a few months ago.

Geelong West Automotive is the city’s independent specialists in Volvo, Peugeot, Renault and Citroen, which Mark has serviced since starting as an apprentice at age 16.

“That’s all I’ve ever known,” the workshops’ new part-owner and manager says.

“Our workshops are tooled up especially to service these luxury European vehicles.”

Mark prides himself on his attention to detail, which is what any luxury car owner would expect.

He joins fellow mechanics Adam Hunter, Gordon Cuthill and Ben Buckle as part owner of the workshop.

The team also includes George Bellingham, who has over 40 years’ experience working with Volvo.

“They’re very dedicated,” he says, “I’ve known them most of my life.

“We all used to work together at another car dealership in Geelong.”

Geelong West Automotive has been extremely busy servicing luxury vehicles, along with carrying out roadworthy inspections, repairs, electronical work and tyres.

“We’ve just put on a full-time apprentice to help keep up with demand,” Mark says.

And in the coming weeks the workshop will undergo renovations to double its capacity.

“These changes will allow us to keep up to date with latest technology and equipment, as well as to better cater for our busy workload.”

Mark and his family love Geelong, and he is a passionate Geelong Cats member.

“I couldn’t imagine a better place to raise a family, work and live,” he says.

SPORT Cats’ intensity claws

By Luke Voogt Geelong will need to step up its intensity when it returns to Simonds Stadium to face Fremantle on Sunday afternoon.

Cats coach Chris Scott said the 11th-placed Dockers’ “extreme top-end talent” posed a dangerous threat despite the side being “in transition”.

“We’d expect a pretty hot contest. When they all perform very well they’re very hard to beat.”

The Cats were out-tackled (74 to 93) and slightly outmuscled on ball by the fiery Eagles during their disappointing 13-point loss last Thursday.

“We were really disappointed in a number of areas ... I don’t want to explain it to Ross (Lyon) in great detail,” Scott said.

“We didn’t get it inside 50 well enough and in greasy conditions we were out-pressured around the ball, which hadn’t been the case for the previous few weeks.

“If they dominate the inside 50 count and field position it’s going to be a tough night for us.”

Geelong’s tackling paid dividends in its last game against Fremantle, with the Cats laying 27 more tackles in their 42-point win.

The Cats are ranked equal third for tackles in the AFL, with an average of 73.8 per game, while the Dockers are last with 59.8.

Geelong also dominated in the clearances and inside 50s.

Cockatoo will miss this Sunday’s game against Fremantle, and Scott said he would need to be “absolutely, categorically right" when he returns.

Nakia Cockatoo will need to better read the cues his body gives him following his minor hamstring injury, he added.

“He is just a little bit raw in terms of understanding the feedback mechanisms his body provides.“ “We’re relieved to hear it’s not as serious as it could have been. But it left us one down for virtually the whole game.”

Scott said he and his coaching staff had a responsibility to temper the players’ on-field aggression, in the wake of Hawkins’ suspension and Joel Selwood’s report last week.

Hawkins was suspended for a jumper punch against Adelaide following an AFL crackdown, while Selwood was fined after collecting West Coast’s Sam Mitchell.

“We want our players playing hard, aggressive footy and sometimes that means you go close to the line,” he said.

“But if you overstep it you pay a very big penalty and you do run the risk of being penalised where some players haven’t.”

The Cats women’s side will take on Melbourne Uni in the VFLW at St Mary’s Oval from 10.45am.

All set for trail marathon, with a record field to boot A record field of runners will contest a fourth annual marathon along the Surf Coast this weekend, organisers have announced.

Many entrants in the half and full-length events would compete in their first Saucony Surf Coast Trail Marathon, the organisers said.

The race was launched to highlight Surf Coast Walk but had developed a reputation for attracting both dedicated trail runners and athletes crossing over from road and multisport disciplines, Anglesea-based organiser Chris Ord said.

gates around the Surf Coast event annually.

“It’s something we’ve always been extremely proud of, that people will choose the Surf Coast Trail Marathon as their first distance trail running event. Indeed, many report that it is their first ever run on trails.

“That’s what the Surf Coast Trail Marathon is about: being a fun, welcoming event for all runners be they fast or shall we say more relaxed in their pacing.

The number of entries for this year’s event demonstrated that the Surf Coast was now a “certified hotspot for the booming sport of trail running”, Ord said.

“It just goes to show the strong attraction our landscapes and trails have for runners. We’ve even got people flying in from the United States specifically to run the event.”

Ord expected competitors to also set record for “pointy end performances”.

He tipped likely high-performers in the men’s competitions as Ballarat’s former Australian mountain running representative, Ash Watson, along with Geelong’s Brett Coleman and Australian 100km championship winner Francesco Ciancio. In the women’s fields Ord liked the chances of Geelong’s Tameka Day, who holds the course record of 3:35:13.

Plastics do the trick this week ON THE BITE Chris Pitman Corio Bay continued keeping anglers entertained over the past week with salmon along Geelong’s waterfront.

Casting plastics hard against various structures was the best approach.

Garfish also gathered in large schools within reach of land-based anglers at Limeburner’s Point boat ramp where pinkie snapper were banked too with bluebait on paternoster rigs.

Squid were taken all along the Bellarine Peninsula. Clifton Springs through to Swan Bay’s entrance produced bag-limit captures.

I spent an hour or so drifting in the deeper water near the Bourke Street area, catching squid on Yamashita Live series jig in white colouration.

Anglers chasing whiting found the going slower, although bag limit captures were still possible at St Leonards toward evening.

Queenscliff Harbour was still a hot spot for silver trevally along the main cut at slack tide. Gulp Turtleback worms in Pumpkinseed were a standout, with salmon also snapping up the plastic at times.

The grass beds to the east of the harbour held larger whiting averaging 40cm-plus.

Tenderised squid was the best bait.

Surf anglers spun up plenty of salmon all the way from 13th Beach to Lorne. Sea Iron Palacus lures were a standout.

The beaches again fished well at night for gummy shark and the odd mulloway to just over 90cm.

Southern bluefin tuna were a standout between Apollo Bay and Portland, with the former best for the larger specimens. Trolling skirted lures around bird and bait action was the go.

The estuaries dotted along the western district coastline still produced plenty of bream and estuary perch on black vibestyle lures.

However, freshwater anglers enjoyed the best results.

The Lake of 1000 Casts, or Wurdee Boluc Reservoir, gave up a trophy brown trout to Ross Gould at first light Monday morning. Ross banked a 3.6kg brown trout on a shallow-diving hard-body lure, along with a 1.8kg fish a short time after.

Stony Creek Reservoir fished well for browns to 1kg for anglers casting spoontype lures. Letting lures sink to the bottom before retrieving gave the best results.

The reservoir also produced some large redfin to over 40cm.

Lake Bullen Merri was kind to anglers trolling with downriggers during the day, with Chinook salmon on the bite. Trolling hard-body lures at first light resulted in rainbow, brown trout to 1.5kg, while anglers fishing bait along the margins caught fish day and night.

Next week should present opportunities for catching squid at Clifton Springs or spinning the beaches for salmon during the day and gummies as well at night. Freshwater angles could try spinning large hardbody lures early at Wurdee Boluc.
