Hope is growing A Selby family is hoping to move forward with their lives and without fear a second tree will crash through their property.

During a windstorm on 9 October last year, Mark and Lynne Westaway, and their children Brit and Liam, narrowly escaped with their lives after a towering tree fell onto their family home of 32 years.

Only 10 minutes before the fall, the family had been in the loungeroom that

bore the brunt of the tree.

Instead, the tree fell just metres from Brit, leaving the family traumatised.

But, if a damaged home wasn’t enough, that event hasn’t been the end of their troubles.

The fallen tree was one of two ‘sister trees’ situated on an adjacent reserve, both of which Yarra Ranges Council arborists had deemed safe, despite the Westaway family raising concerns about 10 years before.

Still in fear over the October incident, the family believe it’s only a matter of time before the remaining tree follows suit.

Mark said it could only fall in one direction, “right smack through the middle of our house”.

But after arborists again declared the remaining tree safe in April this year, the family pleaded with council at its Tuesday 13 June meeting to have the tree removed.

Mark said the family didn’t want to

live in fear anymore.

“Only sheer chance decided whether or not that was a killer tree,” he said.

“Now, this tree had been twice charged with the same assessment.

“After this tree came through our house, we requested another roadside appraisal for the remaining tree and, again, you’ve seen the recommendation.

“We can’t understand this; I don’t know what it takes ... all history points towards a repeat event.

“We cannot understand how one tree ... can be deemed more precious and valuable than our lives.”

Mark said the remaining tree, although healthy, sits in an aquifer and is among a line of trees that have all fallen in the same direction, which is towards their house.

Lynne, who is a teacher at Selby Primary School, explained to the council the level of fear with which the family lived.

Family’s taste of success

A back-to-basics approach to food preparation has helped one Upwey family to breathe easy again.

After enduring months of worry over the health of their newborn son, Eli, Elizabeth and Josh Burrett are getting their life back after re-thinking their relationship with food.

In his earliest months, Eli, now 18 months, was constantly hospitalised due to severe allergies.

Eli barely slept properly, suffered from persistent vomiting, and there was a constant threat of him going into anaphylactic shock.

Doctors and Eli’s family eventually investigated which foods were making him sick.

They discovered the culprits were milk, eggs and traces of nuts, as well as other items commonly found in processed foods.

Mum Elizabeth said Eli’s battles had left them confused, scared and exhausted.

“Definitely, it’s been scary; there were times when I was afraid to leave the house for fear Eli would consume something that he shouldn’t,” she said.

“Thankfully, my husband is a paramedic and knew what to do when Eli wasn’t well, but it was still a horrible experience to go through.

“Only now he has started sleeping through the night; he used to be always upset and wouldn’t sleep for more than three-hour periods at one time.”

Elizabeth also discovered the allergens Eli had been receiving through her breast milk had been making him sick.

But it wasn’t long before the maternal instinct kicked in and Elizabeth completely ‘re-wrote her own cookbook’ and began preparing the fam-

ily’s food from scratch.

This led Elizabeth on a path she hadn’t expected, but nonetheless a rewarding one.

“I’ve had to learn how to cook everything from scratch; it’s been a major learning curve but a necessary one,” she said.

“I make pasta from scratch, while Eli now has some favourites such as Singapore noodles.

“I never really liked cooking that much before, but I love it now.

“My daughter, Chloe, 4, also joins in; we cook together all the time.”

The Burrett family now know exactly what goes into their meals and are no longer living in fear they might make Eli sick.

Over the journey, friends Gabby and Sarah encouraged Elizabeth to invest in a Thermomix to help with the cooking.

Elizabeth said this decision had not only made cooking easier, but they also won a major Thermomix competition.

Elizabeth and Josh were recently announced as the winners of a trip to Lake Como, Italy, as a result of hosting a Thermomix Cooking Experience.

After hosting the cooking experience, Liz and Josh won over more than 12,000 other entrants.

The prize is return flights to Lake Como, Italy, seven nights’ accommodation, $3000 spending money, transfers and an invitation to a dining experience at Michelin Star restaurant, Villa Crespi.

Elizabeth said the couple hadn’t enjoyed a holiday since the children were born and couldn’t wait to spend time with Josh in Italy.

Stealing is too easy

By Wendy Williamson Complacency on the part of homeowners is aiding burglars.

That’s the view of Lilydale police inspector Peter Wheeler, as the latest crime statistics reveal a 30.7 per cent increase in burglary or break and enter offences in the Yarra Ranges over the past year.

“Don’t make it easy for thieves to gain access by leaving garage doors open or doors and windows unlocked,” Inspector Wheeler said.

He added that homeowners should also consider installing deadlocks and alarms to deter would-be burglars.

The number of burglaries in the Yarra Ranges Police Service Area

rose from 592 in the 12 months to the end of March 2016 to 774 a year later.

The rise in the number of burglaries in the Yarra Ranges was steeper than for the state as a whole, where the rise was 4.5 per cent.

On the other hand crimes against the person rose 7.5 per cent across the state and only 3.3 per cent in the Yarra Ranges.

The total number of criminal offences in the Yarra Ranges rose 7.1 per cent, from 8219 in the year ending March 2016 to 8804 by the end of March 2017.

It was property and deception offences which increased the most significantly in the Yarra Ranges - up

9.9 per cent. This category includes arson, which was down 36.8 per cent and property damage, which went down 21.4 per cent.

However, as well as the number of burglaries going up 30.7 per cent, thefts increased by 21 per cent.

“Any increase in any category is a concern,” said Inspector Wheeler.

“We aim to reduce crime.”

He stressed the need for homeowners to be vigilant and for people to use their common sense and not leave valuables in their vehicles even in their driveways.

“It astounds me the number of times we have to remind people not to leave valuables in their cars and to lock their cars. We’re used to

thieves targeting cars in car parks.

Now we are finding that under cover of darkness offenders - often young kids - are targeting cars parked in driveways.”

Tradies, he added, were falling victim to thieves when they left tools in the back of their vehicles.

“We need the public to assist by adopting commonsense measures,” Inspector Wheeler said.

“What I would encourage is participation in our Eyewatch page.

We’re getting a lot of success with this collaborative approach which relies very heavily on the public reporting what they have seen.”

Council meeting at Warburton sets the scene for democracy

Briefly Car impounded A 19-year-old Ferny Creek man has had his Holden Commodore impounded by Belgrave police after he allegedly evaded police along Burwood Highway from Tremont to Belgrave shortly after midnight on 13 June 2017.

Police then made further inquiries and located the car at the owner’s address that night, where it was impounded for 30 days.

The driver will be summonsed to appear at the Ringwood Magistrates’ Court for driving while disqualified and other associated traffic offences.

Cr Mike Clarke said ‘people’ needed to be considered in arborist’s reports.

“You can see the severe stress this family is under,” he said.

“This is a family that contributes enormously to our community.

“I know we all want to protect trees, but ... to me this is a black and white case where its sister tree has come down and it was a healthy tree, just as healthy as this one.”

Cr Tim Heenan added: “The family has been put under enormous stress and I think we need to do the right thing and have this tree removed. It’s fairly simple”.

A cow has been shot at on a property in Nar Nar Goon with a high power rifle on Saturday 18 June around 10.30pm.

The cow sustained serious injuries and needed medical attention. It is believed the cow was targeted on Saturday night in his paddock.

The following morning, the owner discovered that one of his cows had been shot at in the paddock, and was severely injured.

It is believed the alleged offender had shot the cow from a location on Bessie Creek Road in North Nar Nar Goon.

Warning for off-road riders Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol Leading Senior Constable Graeme Rust has warned off-road motorcyclists to take care and look after each other after a spate of accidents.

“A lot of off-road motorcycle riders obviously need to be aware, and check on their mates and make sure they are riding within capabilities.”

“If they are riding in a group, they need to be able to ride to the ability of the less experienced rider, so that the less experienced rider is not under the peer group pressure of trying to keep up,” he said.

SES to get the ver y best Our Victorian State Emergency Service volunteers do an incredible job.

We rely on them to help keep us safe when disaster strikes - whether that’s a flood, storm damage or other emergency. You may not always see what they do because it could be that they are helping to repair a roof or help someone trapped in an upturned car in the middle of the night when most of us are fast asleep.

They are always there to roll up their sleeves and help those in need. It doesn’t matter whether it is Easter or Christmas Day or any other holiday - if there is an emergency they will give up

These hard-working volunteers respond to around 1300 requests for help every year, across the Dandenongs and surrounding areas.

I’ve visited the unit on several occasions over the years and I’m always impressed at the work they carry out.

But it was clear to me that the volunteers needed better facilities.

That is why I was so happy to announce on Friday that Emerald SES will be receiving $1.8 million in this year’s State Budget to build a brandnew modern facility. This funding boost ensures Emerald SES volunteers will have everything they need to protect the

Better advice for when trees go bad

By Peter Douglas Yarra Ranges councillor Fiona McAllister has defended concerns over the shire’s procedures in relation to the identification and removal of dangerous trees.

At its Tuesday 13 June meeting, council voted against two Arborist Assessment Reports, which had recommended no action because the trees were considered to be healthy and structurally sound.

These cases were at Selby and at Lilydale, with the former causing considerable concern to the family involved.

However, Cr McAllister said these instances also showed there was scope to make “broader-based decisions” and were not indicative of a flawed system.

“I think we have a process that allows these decisions to come to the chamber and for us to make broader-based decisions,” Cr McAllister said.

“But we have very highly qualified staff who give us good advice and do reference us to people.

“And on the odd occasion when they don’t - and I think of the volume of trees they assess on a regular basis - I think we have provisions for them to come through the chamber.”

Before her comments, Cr McAllister had taken “umbrage” over remarks from Cr Mike Clarke, who

By Derek Schlennstedt A collaboration between two hillsbased friends has resulted in a stunning art exhibition at Warburton Art Gallery.

Jacqui Christians from Upwey and Tiffany Morris-North from Belgrave only live a few kilometres apart, but both artists formed a close friendship after they were admiring each other’s work at local Dandenong Ranges markets.

“We met doing markets in Upwey and just liked each other’s work,” Tiffany said.

They have since joined the Dandenong Ranges studio and their most recent collaboration is titled ‘things we covet - a still life exhibition’.

The exhibition is an extensive inquiry into a still-life subject and pays homage to simple arrangements of beauty that enhance our

domestic life and items that represents nature and instil a sense of harmony including: flowers, seeds, ceramics and collectibles.

With similar art styles, it was an easy decision to collaborate.

“We both did Dandenong Ranges Open Studios programs together for a few years,“ Jacqui said.

“We thought if we could find a subject matter, we could work towards an exhibition because we have similar work.

The pair often work sessions together, where they bounce ideas off each another.

“We sometimes work together and set something up at Jacqui’s house and have a little bit of a session,” Tiffany said.

“We both like similar things; we work differently but we both have similar subject matter,” Jacqui said.

By Peter Douglas Yarra Ranges Council has moved to further strengthen its working relationship with local neighbourhood houses.

At its Tuesday 13 June meeting, council passed and announced a memorandum of understanding between the shire and neighbourhood houses within the Yarra Ranges.

The document took council officers about six months to prepare, with groundwork including various workshops and consultation with the houses’ committees of management.

Councillors Jim Child and Mike Clarke spoke glowingly about the important role community houses played within their respective wards.

Cr Child said councillors would continue to offer support.

“We really respect and are very supportive of our neighbourhood houses. They provide such a fantastic community facility in local areas,” Cr Child said.

“For us to go through this exercise of doing the reviews ... and being supportive of neighbourhood houses is just fantastic.”

Cr Clarke said much behind-the-scenes work had gone into developing the MoU. “Their (council officers’) contact has been very inclusive and we’ve been overdue with this memorandum of understanding,” Cr Clarke said.

“I’ve followed up with community houses in my area - Selby, Belgrave South and Kallista ... and they’re happy their issues are being covered.”

The MoU recognises the opportunities provided through strong, collaborative relationships.

The document seeks to provide a framework through which both sides can clarify accountabilities and commitments.

At its Tuesday 13 June meeting, council passed the draft strategy, which aims to outline how council will protect, improve and promote public health and well-being.

The draft strategy won support from all councillors, with Cr Tim Heenan underlining much good work behind the scenes.

“This facet of what we do here at Yarra Ranges is important and we certainly support the work that’s been done over a long period of time,” he said.

Among the key issues highlighted within the Yarra Ranges include mental health and encouraging healthy eating and physical activity. Also of concern are high incidence of chronic disease, limited service access, and problematic alcohol and other use.

The draft strategy focuses on prevention, through advocacy, developing strong partnerships and involving the community. Council is required to develop a health and well-being strategy within 12 months of the election of a new council.

Fit as fiddles

By Peter Douglas Hills locals Adie Bergen and Leon Gailitis have been impressing friends and family with their incredible weight-loss story, while being announced the winners of a major competition.

After participating in the Monbulk Aquatic Centre’s 12week challenge, Your New Beginning (YNB), the pair has lost a combined 21.3 kilograms.

The Belgravia Leisure program is designed to inspire individuals to become more active through small-group personal training, group fitness classes and access to nutritional and meal-planning expertise.

Leon and Adie said they were proud to have won and

were even happier to have transformed their lives, kept off the weight and continued training since the challenge finished.

Adie said her health and well-being had improved significantly.

“This is definitely a lifestyle change that I want to continue,” she said.

“I want to get to the point where I’m running again.

“I also want to lose 10 more kilos and keep it off.”

Leon hopes to run a short triathlon at the end of the year, while saying his weight loss had helped to improve his mental well-being.

“I have more enthusiasm about life and feel like I’ve re-

gained a little of my youthful spirit,” he said.

Meanwhile, Monbulk Aquatic Centre Manager, Dave Florance, said it was a privilege to play a role in helping people to take control of their lives.

“Our health club actively works with the local community to give people the support they need to achieve the health and fitness results they seek,” he said.

“Leon and Adie are great examples of this and we are really proud to have them work out at our health club.”

The YNB program will return at the Monbulk Aquatic Centre in February next year.

Several recent letters have mourned the loss of some sycamore maples from the Dandenongs.

It is true that they are a beautiful tree; however, there are some serious downsides to the species.

The seed can germinate in the dark, under the litter, then grow through quickly to a tree that produces seed in five to 10 years.

The seed has a wing and can fly long distances to colonise new areas.

These abilities mean that sycamore maple can invade undisturbed native vegetation and completely suppress and replace the native understorey.

Sycamore maple is a serious pest weed in the Dandenongs and needs to be eradicated wherever possible.

There are many suitable replacements.

The true maples (genus acer, sycamore maple is from the genus pseudoplatanus) look very similar and are not weedy.

Liquidamber trees are similar.

If you have young sycamore maple on your property, please consider replacing them with something that does not damage our valuable environment.

Yarra Ranges Council has done an excellent job in removing sycamore maple (and other weeds) along the road reserve on Monbulk Road near Kallista.

Danger of dogs Recently, my 73-year-old partner was on his regular walk along quiet roads in the hills near our home when he encountered a woman who was walking with two dogs, neither of which was on a leash.

On seeing my partner, the larger of the two dogs, a German shepherd, lowered its body and charged at him, snapping its jaws and growling.

The woman with the dogs attempted to call the dog back but it ignored her and continued to charge.

In his shock and agitation, my partner slipped over; and while on the ground, the dog continued to stand close by him snapping and growling.

Although my partner wasn’t hurt, he was very shaken by the experience and we are both concerned that such an aggressive dog, not on a leash, could not be controlled by the person with it.

Please, can dog owners be mindful of the behaviours of their dogs and of the impact of aggressive, uncontrolled behaviour of their dogs on other people.

Dark ages When I moved to Belgrave last year from the colourful and diverse Mount Waverley area, I saw the main street as a vibrant community bathed in sunshine - people having coffee and just chatting and lunching.

This week, I decided to take advantage of a shop in the Belgrave arcade.

Coming from the car park area behind Woolworths, what an absolute shock; dirty, uninviting, uninteresting long ramps.

I thought I was in a third world country.

As I walked down this ramp, I felt the wind howling and I swear I saw tumbleweeds blowing past me, reaffirming I was in a back alleyway in third world country.

As I turned the corner, I saw some shops completely darkened (well, poetic licence as it is) and very dirty with rubbish on the floor ... very intimidating.

I entered the shop that I was looking for, which was nice and cosy, but I’m telling you that was terrifying.

When I left, I decided to go out to the front entrance because its cavernous light filled me with safety not going back to the Woolworths car park.

I went to cross at the lights and sitting on the bench in the side-street, just next to the toilet area were a group of hooded youths who were obviously drug and alcohol affected.

Not a good look on a Saturday afternoon at 3 o’clock ... not really what I want to see in my neighbourhood.

I think we need to get that arcade brightened up to encourage shoppers - it’s terrible.

By Cameron Hutchison AFL YARRA RANGES Round 9 and it’s halfway through the 2017 season, so everyone can sit back and see how they are tracking and get ready for the remainder of the year.

Division 1 and we have had two draws, Olinda and Wandin share top spot with Woori Yallock and Healesville sharing third. Upwey-Tecoma and Mount Evelyn are battling it out for fifth spot with Monbulk and Emerald chasing them in a share of seventh spot with eyes still on the five.

Division 2 sees Seville and Belgrave sharing top spot, Yarra Glen holds onto third with Powelltown one game behind. Alexandra are in fifth with Yarra Junction now hot on their heels.

Netball: Olinda now has a clean break on Wandin in second, Woori Yallock are in third and Monbulk and Warburton Millgrove even out the top five.

In Division 2, Belgrave have a solid hold in top spot with Yarra Glen and Yarra Junction fighting it out for second.

Powelltown and Kinglake are tied for fourth, with Yea not far behind in sixth with a great percentage.

This week, Upwey-Tecoma celebrates being the first club to reach the 1000 senior match milestone in YVMDFNL/AFL Yarra Ranges history.

A five-goal second quarter saw their lead increase to 40 points at half-time and Warburton’s supporters certainly had something to cheer about. A massive seven-goal burst to two in the third and the game was all but over. Gembrook outscored Warburton in the last, kicking 5.1 to 3.6, but it was all over by then. Andrew White was in rare form, kicking 10 goals, helping Warburton to a very handy four points and now a game clear of Gembrook.

Monbulk 16.13(109) d Mount Evelyn 8.20(68) Monbulk came away with a surprise win on Saturday after a disappointing performance in front of goal by Mount Evelyn. Monbulk kicked 2.3 in the first but Mount Evelyn kicked 1.9 and should have been well and truly in front by quarter time. Monbulk piled on 7.4 in the second, while Mount Evelyn could only manage five behinds and were well and truly behind the eight ball at half-time, with only 1.14 on the scoreboard and a deficit of 41 points.

Their accuracy improved in the third and they kicked four straight, but Monbulk also kicked 4.4 and the lead was 45 points at three-quarter time. Mount Evelyn were never going to claw back

that lead with Monbulk coming away with a 41-point win at the final siren keeping them in touch of the five at the midway point of the season.

Olinda Ferny Creek 9.13(67) drew with Wandin 10.7(67) A top-of-the-table clash and it did not disappoint as a game for supporters. Olinda had the early lead of one point at quarter time after a tight contest. Scores were all tied up at halftime with both sides kicking 5.5 and the message at half-time would have been ‘the game starts all over again!’. It was tight as expected again in the third with Olinda getting a minor advantage of three behinds it three-quarter time.

The final quarter was relentless and it would all come down to accuracy in the end. Olinda certainly had more opportunities than Wandin with six scoring shots to four, but could not capitalise on them. Wandin also had some great chances late in the game and it was all tied up at the final siren.

Emerald could only manage one behind in the second, while Woori Yallock peppered the goals with a six-goal quarter to have a winning lead at half-time of 63 points. Another consistent quarter with five goals to three and the lead had blown out to 73 points. It was up to Emerald to put some respectability back in the score in the last but Woori

Yallock absolutely put on a display in the last kicking 9.6 to 1.1 and a huge percentage-boosting win.

Seville held Alexandra to one goal in the second while adding four goals themselves and extended their lead to 50 points at half-time. It was a bit of a goal-kicking display in the third with nine goals being kicked but they were to the advantage of Seville. Alexandra outscored Seville in the last kicking 3.3 to 1.4 but the damage had already been done.

Another five goals just added salt to the wounds and a lead of 83 points at three-quarter time was the game sealer. Belgrave finished off as they started, with a five-goal last quarter with James Brown notching up eight for the day.

Powelltown 19.11(125) d Yarra Glen 12.11(83) Powelltown have turned on a lasthalf blitz to get a morale-boosting win for themselves and a wake-up call for Yarra Glen which were sharing top spot but now sit third on the ladder.

Powelltown are now only one game behind them. The game see-sawed in the first, with Yarra Glen holding a slim lead of three points at quarter time. Powelltown came out running in the second and got the jump on Yarra Glen which could only manage three goals to the Demons six, and the game had certainly swung into Powelltown’s favour. Powelltown’s best quarter by far was the third when they held Yarra Glen goalless and kicked 3.4 themselves to hold a commanding lead of 36 points at three-quarter time. No rotations for Yarra Glen in the last half made it tough but they still would have been confident that they could fight back, but Powelltown took full advantage and ran away with a 42-point win at the final siren.

Yarra junction had one of their best opening quarters for a long time, kicking 7.3 to 3 straight to take a lead of 27 points into the second quarter. Kinglake outscored Yarra Junction by three points in the second but the momentum was still with The Eagles. Scoring slowed down in the last half with Yarra Junction kicking only 4.7 to 4.9, leaving the final margin at 22 points in Junction’s favour.

Tough games for Monbulk at Healesville MONBULK JUNIOR FOOTBALL Round 8 on Sunday saw the majority of the Monbulk Junior Football club teams make the big trip to Healesville.

The players and their families were greeted with sunshine and warmth, although many teams endured a loss.

The club continues to grow in numbers and although the day was not a success on the scoreboard it was a success for participation, fun and club spirit.

UNDER 9 A great game as the team continues to improve each week. Getting to the ball first is the key - well done.

UNDER 10 MAROON Toughest test of the year against a strong Woori-Yallock team. Still stuck to their tasks and moved the ball well when they got their hands to it. Worked on their

UNDER 10 GOLD That’s as good a team as they will play.

They fought right to the end. The players continued to improve and that’s all the coaches ask. Well done and keep it up.

Gold medal win to Sam

By Jamie Strudley Saturday represented the start of the cross country championship season with the Victorian All Schools and Open Age Cross Country Championships held at Bundoora Park.

School athletes represented their respective school, while athletes no longer at school competed for the club.

Yarra Ranges Athletics had an excellent turnout of athletes throughout the day with 20 club athletes representing their school.

Stand-out perfromances came from Sam Norton, Georgia Laven and Lily Peacock.

Sam held off a late challenge to win his Under 15s 4km race.

Georgia ran a solid race to finish a close second in the Under 16s 4km, while Lily ran a strong second lap to claim bronze in the Under 16s 4km.

Other top 10 finishes were

by Maddie Laven, Indigo Linde and Ruby Dixon.

While it was cold early, the effort and enthusiasm of all athletes and supporters was superb making for another excellent morning of cross country.

There is no Saturday morning cross country next week as the little athletics athletes tackle the Eastern Region Cross Country Championships at Ruffey Lake, Doncaster.

See you all there; if not - the next round will be on Saturday 1 July at Margaret Lewis Reserve for the club handicap.

Motoring Bonnici wins big derby

The winners for the qualifying races in the lead-up to the feature event included Kershaw, Jordan, McPherson, Damien Miller, Fallon, David Forrest, Monti, Josh Service, Corey Lincoln, Steve Lincoln and Moule, Frank Ramsdale, Warren and Morrison.

Thirteen of the 30 qualifying races were decided by a margin less than a second, with Bonnici setting the fastest sixth lap qualifying time of 3:14.804s in the second last heat of qualifying.

In other events, Mark Miles from Pakenham won the Shemrock Cup to defeat local hope Nick Chrystie by three seconds.

In qualifying races, Miles also set a new Standard Saloon

Short course lap to record a time of 35.705s, while also winning the fastest heat race of the night when he recorded a time of 3:37.871s.

In the Junior Victorian Short Circuit Championship competition, Lilydale racer Kasey Garlick proved too strong for the field of eighteen starters to win the 20-lap final by under a second.

Garlick won the race by under a second from Cormwall who finished in second position and Gorski who finished in third.

Earlier in qualifying, Tim Gorski was the fastest ever junior around the course with a new record time of 35.882s, while Courtney Meakins won the fastest heat of the weekend with a time of 3:46.632s.

Tearaway Lennie Bonnici won the prestigious 100 Lap Derby by 23 seconds at Alexandra Speedway on Monday 5 June.

Bonnici won it for the second year in a row, with Brad Warren finishing in second position.

Around 70 competitors entered the qualifying for the 100 Lap Derby, with only 40 starting in the main event.

The weekend saw lap records crash race after race in all categories including the 100 Lap Derby where the record tumbled from 32.5s prior to the weekend to 31.4s by the time it finished.

There were several casualties in the derby including David Forrest who was torn up on lap two, Dale Morrison who bended his front end on lap seven, and fastest man on the dogleg course Warrick Taylor also losing his steering on lap seven.

Other big-name casualties included four-time winner Luke Fallon who exited early, while top 10 credential Garry Monti ended up with a broken racecar.

Bonnici with an LS1 powered chassis battled with Corey Lincoln, Damien Miller and top qualifier for the feature Brad Warren up until lap 50, before Lincoln and Miller dropped out of the race leaving Bonnici and Warren battle it out for first position.

Bonnici went on to win the race, over three quarters of a lap from Brad Warren, Andrew Jordan, Steve Kershaw, Dales Smith, Tim McPherson, Robert Haisma, Jake Blencowe and Warrick Howie.

During qualifying, Warrick Taylor running a chassis car with an LS1 methanol fuelled and carburetted engine, set the outstanding fastest ever lap of 31.440s on day two of the dogleg circuit.

The record for the dogleg circuit was broken a number of times before Taylor’s time of 31.440s, with Bonnici, Moule and Fallon also breaking the record.
