Waurn Ponds Police Station has extended its opening hours while maintaining extra patrols on the road, according to Geelong Superintendent Craig Gillard.

Front-counter services will be available from 6am to 10pm daily from 1 July after a controversial trial of reduced hours from 10am to 6pm.

The reduced hours had freed up 200 hours of twoperson police patrols during the trial.

Supt Gillard said police had maintained the patrols while increasing front desk hours thanks to a “staff restructure”.

“It’s a win-win, we’ve extended our opening hours and we haven’t reduced our patrol capacity.”

The reinstated the front desk hours would “further improve service delivery for the Waurn Ponds community”, Geelong Acting Inspector John Clark said.

But the station needed more officers, said Grovedale resident Alan Rogers. “(The opening hours are) not going to make any difference that I can see.”

Mr Rogers said police took four hours to respond when he called triple zero at 6.47pm on 10 January.

An apparently drug-affected man entered Mr Rogers’ backyard and began throwing objects at his house roof before threatening his wife with shovel, he said.

“He had to be on something.”

Residents step up battle against libraries closing

By Luke Voogt Residents are stepping up their movement to save three Geelong libraries with another two protests this month.

Campaigner Robert Hamilton-Jones said Geelong administrators’ decision to close Highton, Chilwell and Barwon Heads libraries had “disgusted” the community.

“The Highton Library has been open for 40 years and now during a small window in which Geelong does not have an elected council, it is suddenly about to be closed.

“Closing local libraries is hardly the kind of pressing matter that the temporary administrators should be concerning themselves with,” he said.

Mr Hamilton-Jones’ partner, Jacqui Bennett, urged residents to attend City Hall during the next council meeting on 27 June.

“We’ve got to keep the pressure on,” she said.

“Everyone should be worried about what’s happening here because it’s undemocratic.”

Ms Bennett also encouraged residents to attend a community engagement meeting next Tuesday, 21 June, at 6pm at the Celies Room at Sacred Heart College.

Protesters will hold a rally at Barwon Heads Library at 2pm on Sunday to prevent its pending closure.

“We’re just hoping to bring it to the attention of our community,” said Barwon Heads grandmother Mandy Bridges.

“It’s an intrinsic part of this small community.”

She said the library was essential for the elderly and Barwon Heads Primary School students.

“If the older members of the community can’t drive they can walk to the library. If the library goes that would be the end for them.”

She said that with the nearest library being 4.3km away in Ocean Grove it would not be feasible for local school children to ride there after school.

The population of Ocean Grove had increased significantly since the library opened in 1993, she added.

“So that library is going to be stretched. We’re a community that chooses to cycle and to walk that lifestyle is part of the reason people move to Barwon Heads.”

Unlike Chilwell and Highton libraries, Barwon Heads met none of City Hall’s performance targets during the past year.

But Barwon Heads Library is only open for 13 hours a week.

“They’ve just looked at raw data and not what the libraries actually mean to the community,” Ms Bridges said.

“If the library was open more often you would find people would borrow more often or visit more often.”

Barwon residents were furious at the lack of consultation, Ms Bridges said.

“Neither the City of Greater Geelong or Geelong Library Corporation entered into any community engagement.

“They’ve only tried to engage with the community after they’ve made the decision.”

Federal MP Sarah Henderson and state MPs Lisa Neville and Simon Ramsay will attend Sunday’s rally, Ms Bridges said.

City Hall director of investment and attraction Brett Luxford said Greater Geelong spends approximately $10m on running its libraries.

He said City Hall needed to provide library services to emerging communities.

“Council will be developing a new library at Leopold and there are plans for an upgraded library at Drysdale and a new library at Armstrong Creek.”

Tossers win: It’s become a tip, not a park, say residents

By Luke Voogt A North Geelong park has become “dumping ground” for rubbish according to disgusted residents and workers in the area.

Local resident Robert Derksen said there had been a large build-up of tyres, cans and bottles at Cowies Creek during the past few months.

“As a concerned North Geelong resident I feel deeply sad that the paddock has become a dumping ground.

“At weekends it can be quite busy. A lot of people enjoy the serenity of the environment and the bird life that lives there.”

Mr Derksen said the rubbish was a hazard to children who played at the park and attended a nearby kindergarten.

He said he spoke to other dog-walkers and residents, who were “disgusted” at the pollution, and called on City Hall to clean up the mess.

“I often see council’s contractors mowing the grass and clearing fallen tree branches,” he said.

“But nothing gets done about the pollution in the water. I and many others would like our council to be more responsible.”

Nearby workers told the Indy that local fishermen had been filleting fish and dumping fish heads at the site.

Motorists had also dumped rubbish at the park due to its close proximity to the road, they said.

City Hall spokesperson Geoff Russell said the rubbish would have most likely flowed into the lake or blown in from the surrounding area.

“Following recent rains there has been an increase in litter in local waterways, which are fed by stormwater drains,” Dr Russell said.

“The City encourages residents to dispose of their waste in a responsible manner and bins are located in Seagull Paddock for public use.

The City will arrange to have this rubbish removed.”

Geelong’s push to position itself as a centre of scientific endeavour is developing a highly specific niche, or perhaps that should be ‘nest’.

Yes, this week has brought yet another local breakthrough on how climate change affects birds.

According to the latest from Deakin University, ruddy turnstones are arriving at their Arctic breeding grounds from Australia “an entire day earlier than in previous years�.

The “monumental shift� was likely a response to climate change as the birds adapted to “rapidly advancing seasons� in the Arctic, explained researcher Dr Meijuan Zhao, at the uni’s Waurn Ponds campus.

The ruddy turnstone revelation is just the latest in a series of climate-change-versus-bird research at Deakin, which has also delivered insights on shrinkage in the red knot species, beak growth among Australian parrots, the changing feeding habits of gannets, and the heat-warning call of zebra finch to their incubating young.

So now it’s clear: at Deakin University, climate change research really is for the birds!

The reinstated hours came as Crime Statistics Agency Victoria released its latest statistics showing increases in assault, and sexual and drug offences in Geelong.

Assaults rose 17.8 per cent in the year to March while sex and drug offences were up 36.2 and 31.8 per cent respectively.

Overall crime increased 2.1 per cent compared to 18 per cent in the previous year to March.

Crime in the Surf Coast fell by 19.9 per cent and “plateaued”, which Supt Gillard described as a “tremendous result“.

“Police in the Geelong and Surf Coast area have been working tirelessly over the last 12 months to reduce the volume of crime and to address the harm caused by crime,” he said.

“Our arrest rate has risen by 12 per cent which shows your police are incredibly active in targeting those committing crime.”

Burglary and theft fell 2.5 and 3.6 per cent following significant rises the previous year.

“The Shared Facilities Fund application is based on combining the RGYC Off The Beach facility and the Victorian Sailing School, which is a component of the first stage of the Geelong Waterfront Safe Harbour Precinct project.

“As part of the process, we have now been requested by the State Government to draft a Community Joint Use Agreement with Newcomb Secondary College in relation to the sailing school and off-the-beach complex.”

The club needed “member input” on the shared-use facilities to help develop draft concept plans, Mr Williams said.

The additional state money would allow the club to start work on stage one’s wave attenuator, new floating berths and the sailing school/offthe-beach complex, he said.

Geelong ratepayers have officially lost their mayoral vote after a State Government bill passed parliament last week.

“The Andrews Government has denied the right of greater Geelong voters to directly elect their municipal leaders,” said Western Victoria MP Simon Ramsay.

The City of Greater Geelong Amendment Bill 2017 abolished the direct mayoral vote after the coalition failed to garner enough upper house numbers for an amendment.

The coalition wanted Geelong to use the Melbourne model of a public vote for a mayor and deputy on the same ticket.

Labor’s bill followed the recommendations of a government-commissioned “Citizens’ Jury” in Geelong earlier this year.

The jury at first voted in favour of a directly elected mayor but had to vote again to achieve the process’s required “super majority” decision.

The second vote produced a reverse result, favouring the previous system of councillors choosing the mayor among themselves.

Mr Ramsay said the jury acted in good faith

but was constrained under the government’s “parameters” on the mayoral-vote decision.

An online Democracy in Geelong survey, in conjunction with the jury, found that 59 per cent of 956 respondents wanted to keep their mayoral vote.

But Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins said the bill gave Geelong the council “it wanted”.

“This is a historic day for the city and I’m proud of everyone involved in making it happen particularly the members of the Geelong Citizens Jury,” she said.

Under the Andrews Government changes, councillors will choose the mayor and deputy for two-year terms.

Ms Hutchins said the councillors electing the mayor would mean “a more co-operative council”.

Ratepayers will elect 11 councillors across four wards. Three wards will have three councillors and one ward will have two.

Ms Hutchins said the structure would mean better representation of local needs, increased accessibility to councillors and greater collaboration on the council.

Art inspires on road to recovery

By Luke Voogt Leukemia forced Judy Cohn to take a break from tennis, but it couldn’t stop her supporting the club she loves.

The Waurn Ponds grandmother was one of about 20 artists who submitted art to the All Saints Tennis Club’s upcoming art show.

“It’s a very nice display to look at,” the 67-yearold told the Indy on Monday.

“I haven’t played for the last year because of my illness.”

Judy joined the club six years ago after a 25year break from the sport. On court in late 2015, she realised something was wrong.

“I found I was very tired playing my third set,” she said. “I thought it was worth getting a blood test.”

Judy remembered the sinking feeling when doctors told her she had leukaemia.

“I thought ‘I might not get out of this’,” she said.

“They were telling me the statistics for my particular leukaemia, and because I was older it meant I had a 20 per cent chance.”

But after six months of intensive chemotherapy, Judy was cancer-free.

“Now I’ve got two years of what they call maintenance which is a tablet each day,” she said.

“That’s just to get rid of all those nasty little cancer cells if there’s any floating around.”

The grandmother of six credited her recovery to Barwon Health’s quick diagnosis.

“They were fantastic - the minute I went in they took a bone marrow biopsy,” she said.

“They took it very seriously and instantly I was taken through Andrew Love - tests done - and put straight in hospital.”

As she recovered, Judy continued one of her other decade-long passions - painting wildlife in watercolour.

“I could take it in and paint, much to the amusement of the nurses,” she said.

“It keeps my mind busy, and I’ve been very successful selling. It gives you incentive to keep painting.”

Police on ‘prowl’ to bust break-ins

By Luke Voogt Police will look to step up night-time patrols to combat a recent surge in residential and commercial burglaries at Newtown and on Pakington Street in Geelong West.

The number of burglaries over past few weeks was “unusually high”, High Volume Crime Unit detective Gavin Mullins said.

“We’re trying to increase nightshift patrols pending on what other operational requirements we have,” Detective Sergeant Mullins said.

Burglars had broken into 35 homes in Newtown during the past month, he said.

“They’re targeting jewellery, cash, personal documents, such as passports, and keys to vehicles.

“There are some houses that are being broken into with garden tools that have been left around.”

Det Sgt Mullins said residents were “absolutely not” encouraging the burglaries but he urged them conceal or lock away their valuables.

He recommended that residents consider using secure safes.

“But if it’s not mounted to a floor or wall it’s basically a handy receptacle for crooks to walk away with property.”

Alarms, security cameras and locked doors could also help, Det Sgt Mullins said.

“We’ve have a number of cases where the alarm has been activated and the offenders have left the house after only entering a metre or so.”

Det Sgt Mullins urged anyone who witnessed suspicious activity to phone triple zero before resorting to social media.

“There seems to be quite a problem with people calling triple zero,” he said.

“There’ve been plenty of times where people have posted things on (social media) before calling triple zero, which is totally counter-productive.

“We look at offenders breaking into homes as very high on the list of things we want to hear of.”

Burglars have targeted dozens of businesses in Pakington Street during the past month. The June edition of Voice on Pako carried a page-three story about traders up in arms over burglaries, calling on City Hall to spend funds intended for streetscape works on security instead.

Det Sgt Mullins said most of the Pakington St burglars were after cash in “computer equipment”.

“Unfortunately, it’s not too different from other spates (of crimes) we’ve had in previous years.”

Geelong Senior Constable Andrew King earlier this year called on traders to adopt a no-cash strategy, which he said helped reduce crime drastically at Ocean Grove.

The initiative involved Geelong West stores displaying empty till inserts in street front windows and posting signs stating that no cash was held on the property.

“It’s something we’ve communicated with them before,” Det Sgt Mullins said.

“There is definite evidence when (criminals can see) there’s no cash on premises that those businesses are left alone.”

Police were searching for additional security footage and witnesses, Det Sgt Mullins said.

Burglars had also targeted clothing and alcohol, he said.

Det Sgt Mullins urged with anyone with information to phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

SOBERING STATS: Mike Hirst will pour his booze away in support the 2400 people diagnosed with cancer each year in the Geelong region.

Glasses dry in July for cancer fight Mike Hirst has raised more than $50,000 to support Geelong cancer patients, and next month will give up booze again for the cause.

“The hardest year for me was when I took on the extra challenge of giving up my daily egg and bacon roll,” he said.

“I missed that more than the beer, but it certainly helped the waistline. Not sure I could do that again though.”

The Bendigo Bank managing director urged businesses to support Barwon Foundation’s Dry July campaign, which has raised almost $500,000 for Andrew Love Cancer Centre.

Mr Hirst has been the top fund-raiser for Barwon Health’s Dry July campaign since the be-

ginning of the local campaign in 2012.

Each year, over 2400 people are diagnosed with cancer in the Geelong region.

The Barwon Foundation hoped to raise at least $60,000 for Andrew Love Cancer Centre this year.

The money will go towards men’s support groups, carer support, edible garden beds, oncology massage, art and exercise therapy and more.

In the coming weeks the Engineering Services department will be assessing the City’s 1,700 km network of footpaths and shared paths. Inspections have started and will last approximately three weeks.

Robyn joined the City five years ago. Many of her clients have since become like a second family.

Her role combines home, personal and allied health care.

The latter sees her working with an occupational therapist to support clients in living confidently and safely in their own homes. Robyn takes them through a program of set exercises to help them achieve this.

A typical day starts with personal care services in the morning, showering and dressing clients. Many require help with putting on their compression stockings. Cleaning, shopping and other home care services take up most of the rest of the day. Robyn enjoys a strong rapport with all her clients and the feeling she gets from helping them.

Heales Road will be closed between Bacchus Marsh Road and Forest Road South until Friday 30 June 2017 to prepare the road for stabilisation and line marking to upgrade this carriageway.

The assessment will be undertaken by quad bike inspection vehicles operated by certified pavement inspectors who will be travelling at a brisk walking pace with hazard lighting and other warning devices.

Condition information will be captured using video recording of footpaths and shared pathways. All cameras are focused on the footpath surface structure with some limited viewing of areas directly adjacent. No image recordings of commercial, residential, private properties or structures will be undertaken.

The information collected will allow better management of the City’s footpaths which will enable more effective maintenance and renewal strategies, improved connectivity, mobility and safety.

What are they meeting for, except to give the illusion of consultation?

City of Greater Geelong and Geelong Regional Library Corporation already know what we think, which maybe is why they are not genuinely consulting those most affected by their decision.

Finally, to paraphrase opposition local government spokesman David Davis, if Citizens Jury toadies should place Geelong’s next council structure on a short leash of senate-like obstruction, why would new councillors who could make a positive contribution want to step up to the plate?

Fake news on fracking Ralph Huisman went on a tirade of hate against fracking in last week’s Indy.

Among other things he said fracking used “carcinogenic materials”, “pollutes and ruins once productive farmland”, “poisons underground aquifers”, “causes toxic water waste flows into rivers”, caused the vacating of “American towns”, had “flawed” containment methods, and that associated authorities were “totally corrupt”.

None of the above was factual - it was all fake news.

During the Obama administration, the EPA conducted a five-year investigation into fracking and released a report in 2016. The EPA was under heavy pressure from the global warming industry and the White House to find problems with fracking.

A 2015 draft version of the report concluded that fracking had “not led to widespread, systemic impacts on drinking water resources in the United States”. But after enormous political pressure, the final version was changed to say fracking “could” impact drinking water, without supplying any data to support this conclusion.

If fracking had polluted groundwater or caused other problems the EPA would have not been shy reporting it and concluding that fracking did have problems. But the EPA couldn’t because there was no evidence.

The anti-fracking brigade is just peddling fake news to demonise a fossil fuel.

Fracking was recently banned in Victoria, where electricity prices are skyrocketing. In May 2016 Victoria’s wholesale price was $54.24/MWh but in May 2017 it was $107.95/MWh. Chooks are coming home to roost!

Act early to stave off winter chills Many people don’t take a good look at their heating until it’s too late, says Mist Heating, Cooling and Plumbing’s Ivan Pausak.

“Heating and cooling is something people don’t think about until it breaks down,” says the manager of the company’s new showroom.

“There are people out there with 20 or 30-yearold heaters - the newer models are a lot more efficient.”

Mist’s Mercer Street showroom opened a few weeks ago, and locals are coming in to find the best way to stave off the winter chill and save on their bills.

“It’s more about coming in, having a chat and getting the right advice,” Ivan says.

“Most commonly people are coming now for gas-ducted heaters.”

A new heating system can be much cheaper in the long run, he says “Heating is probably the biggest drainer on your utility bills.”

Between a three-star and six-star heater, both new, “you’re looking at a 30 per cent saving on your gas bill”, Ivan says.

The saving can be much bigger when clients replace an old heater, he adds.

The store stocks heating solutions from gas ducting, reverse cycle, radiant heaters, gas log fireplaces, split systems and more.

Ivan says a lot of people are looking up heating online to save time.

But with staff who know the products inside out, it can be faster to come into the store.

“The whole idea behind the showroom is you come in and have a 15- minute chat - we deal with all these products all the time,” he says.

Ivan encourages people to come in before they start building for some timely advice.

“That’s the best time to come in,” he says.

Rebecca’s half human on stage

By Luke Voogt Highton’s Rebecca Harland will star as her favourite Disney princess when Geelong’s young acting talent takes to the stage for The Little Mermaid.

“Ariel was always my favourite,” the 16-yearold told the Indy Monday.

“I used to have a little mermaid costume that I’d wear around.”

The lead role was the first for the young actress, who joined the Geelong Society of Operatic and Dramatic Arts in 2012.

“I always loved dancing and I did singing lessons,” she said.

“I had watched theatre but had never done it when I did, I fell in love with it.

“It’s amazing actually; I worked really hard to get it.

“It’s very different from just being in the ensemble - now I’m actually a character with a name and I’m the only one on stage some of the time.”

She was thrilled to sing classics like Part Of Your World, as Ariel.

“They were my favourite songs,” she said. “The play is very true to Disney.”

Rebecca dreamed of being a Broadway star and said she would love to play Christine from Phantom of the Opera “Ariel was my dream role, but now that I’m playing it ... ” Manifold Heights’ Cooper Stevens joins Rebecca as the Sebastian the calypso crab. He adopted the singing shellfish’s Caribbean accent for the play.

“You get a couple of key words and then you can just go from there,” Cooper said.

“It’s so much fun - when I play Sebastian I get to be as loud and insane as I am at home.”

Newtown’s Ruby Buchanan plays the malevolent Ursula.

The trio visited the Indy offices with friend Maggie Evans, who plays the less well-known roles of ‘Maid Four’ and Myrtle the Turtle.

“I’ve got a really great costume,” Maggie said enthusiastically.

“I had to remember my one line. You have to make up your own back story.”

Maggie joins the 60-plus cast on stage in a ka-

leidoscope of colourful crustaceans for its major number, the catchy Under the Sea. “It’s Myrtle’s star feature,” Cooper joked.

The Little Mermaid tells the story of the rebellious Ariel, who dreams of life above her underwater kingdom and develops a fascination with humans.

She defies her father King Triton to make a deal with the witch Ursula, to walk on dry land

beside her beloved Prince Eric.

Director Emily Donoghue leads a cast comprised entirely of local performers aged 11-17, alongside vocal director Hannah Petrie Allbutt and choreographers Ariane Gavin and Damian Caruso.

The Little Mermaid runs 24 and 30 June, and 1 July at Geelong Performing Arts Centre.

Michelle Hayes Winkle still remembers going with her grandmother Beryl to the Geelong Doll, Teddy and Craft show when it began 25 years ago.

“She was one of the first people to start it,” she said. “She’d be thrilled to see that it’s still continuing.

“I was at the very first one when I was 14 years old, and I made scones in the backroom - batches and batches of them!”

Michelle collected porcelain dolls as a child and will open this year’s event in honour of Beryl. “(The dolls) are really special because my grandmother bought them - it was something my grandmother and I loved doing.”

Quota International Geelong has raised about $100,000 for various Geelong charities through the show since it began, according to organisers.

“It’s just amazing that they’re still managing to run it, even one day,” Michelle said.

This year’s show features 50 stalls of dolls, teddies, handcrafted jewellery, cards and ceramics and other craft items.

The show’s Doll Doctor will be on site to repair dolls or offer valuations, while all proceeds will support Geelong Mums.

Geelong Mums recycles preloved baby and nursery equipment and other essentials to give to disadvantaged families.

By Luke Voogt The newest line-up of pop rock group 1927 is more than a “karaoke version” of the original, says Queensland bass player Simon Shapiro.

“We’re playing all hits but we’re still evolving and doing new music.”

The band’s only remaining original member, Eric Weideman, reformed the band in 2009.

“The band had not been together for a long time,” Shapiro said Monday. “Everyone got along really well and the audiences were still showing up so we kept going.”

Originally, they “felt pressure to pay homage to the original band“, Shapiro said.

“We all just felt like we were supporting Eric doing his thing.

“As the time wears on, you put your own imprint onto it as a musician. It becomes a whole new animal.”

Shapiro had a solo career before joining the band, playing both piano and guitar.

“And I still do my own things as a singer-songwriter.”

He worked as a musician and backing singer for stars like Belinda Carlilse, Bananarama and Daryl Braithwaite.

“I’m lucky to have been able to work with people like that,” he said.

Shapiro has played at sold-out gigs at festivals and theatres with the band.

“Those are really cool, but personally I really like a big pub where you can actually see who’s in the front row, and you can lean over and high-five everybody,” he said.

“Eric loves Melbourne crowds - he grew up there. We were there last night. We pretty much always have great gigs in Melbourne.”

The band will play crowd favourites like That’s When I Think of You and Compulsory Hero when it hits the Gateway Hotel next Friday (23 June).

Drama is drawn out through art Geelong’s Myanmarese youth will share their journeys to Australia this weekend in an exhibition celebrating Refugee Week.

Htoo Ko Lo Ra is one of the Karen and Karenni refugees telling his story through art in the Here and There exhibition.

“I’m not a professional painter,” the 22-yearold said. “But it’s good to do something different and fun.”

Htoo Ko Lo’s parents fled eastern Myanmar to a Thailand refugee camp.

They were part of an ethnic group which the Myanmar (formerly Burma) Government persecuted with forced labour and relocation and the burning of villages, since 1949.

“When the army came they had to run away,” Htoo Ko Lo said.

“The government just tried to kill everybody and they burnt down my parents’ house in their village.”

Htoo Ko Lo spent 16 years growing up in limbo in the refugee camp, until his parents immigrated to Australia in 2010.

“You can’t go back to the country you came from - you just have to wait until a country chooses you,” he said. “There’s nothing to do in the refugee camp."

He said coming to Australia allowed his family “to forget the past and move on”. More than 200 Karen and Karenni people live in the Geelong region.

“It’s good here - everything’s easy. You don’t have to go looking for food or get wood to make a fire.”

“You can do anything you want here.”

The refugees painted both their “old” and “new” lives for the exhibition, explained Htoo Ko Lo’s brother Hserkutha.

“On the left side of my self-portrait, the leaves represent the jungle around the refugee camp,” he said. “On the right side are buildings which represent Australia to me.

“It was strange to see buildings and places so different to the jungle when I came here. I couldn’t believe how many cars there were and how busy it was.”

The exhibition resulted from a project called Drawn Together, where Karen and Karenni youths worked with Barwon Heads artist Liz McGrath.

With the support of Geelong’s Bluebird Foundation, Liz provided support, materials and tuition to the group.

“The self-portraits and landscapes capture just a little of the stories these remarkable young people have to share,” the foundation’s Bron Lawson said.

“To understand their lives helps connect our community and make it a richer place to live.”

The youths were aged between 14 and 22 years and had all lived in refugee camps in Thailand.

“While living in camps, and despite access to only basic materials, many of these young people developed a passion for drawing and art," Bron said.

“They have a keen desire to extend their artistic skills but as school-based art programs have a large folio component that requires high-level English skills, they are often unable to pursue this passion into the senior grades in our school system."

OAM for our hockey guru

By Luke Voogt Highton’s Claire Barnes has been swamped with phone calls and texts since winning recognition for her service to local hockey.

The goal-keeping granny won an Order of Australia over the Queen’s birthday long weekend.

“It’s a huge honour,” she said, ahead of running a junior training session. “It was really a delight to receive the notification.”

“It’s lovely when people who haven’t played with the club for some time come and say congratulations - it really adds to the pleasure of the award.”

Claire turns 63 Monday and has played for Newtown City Hockey Club for 40 years. She said the award was great publicity for the sport.

“It gives hockey as a whole a bit more promotion. If we can let people know hockey is alive and well in Newtown that would be great.”

The Newtown City president has held a variety of positions for the club and Hockey Geelong.

She has umpired, coached and co-ordinated junior seasons, and saved goals since the mid-80s. “(As a goal keeper) you can see the whole field and what happens,” she said. “It’s a bit of thrill when you actually stop a goal.”

“I’m hoping to get to 700 games this season -

I’m currently at 685 or thereabouts.”

Claire has two daughters who play and she hopes to keep the family tradition going.

“My eldest daughter just had a baby, but he’s only a few months old. So he’s not quite ready to play yet.”

Claire said anyone could play hockey. Until recently the club had a 71-year-old goal keeper, she said.

“You can keep playing for quite a long time."

She encouraged locals to give the sport a go.

“Next week is actually National Hockey Week, so it’s actually quite an opportune time. We’d love to invite people to come out and try a game.

Mounting losses moving Warriors towards relegation

North Geelong Warriors suffered another loss to further damage its chances of avoiding relegation with a 3-1 loss to Bulleen last week.

Up next, they travel away again, this time to Port Melbourne on Saturday night.

Port has become somewhat resilient and recent draws to top six teams Oakleigh and Green Gully will no doubt give it a level of confidence.

Against Bulleen there was a lift in intensity from the Warriors who were combining better than in recent weeks.

However, it was a crucial turnover that cost them to lose a player when Matt Thorne was easily dispossessed in the middle of park, Jordan Templin received the through ball and was goalbound, Darren Lewis was adjudged to have held him back and sent off for his trouble, what the referee didn’t notice was that the linesperson had already called for offside on Templin which accounted for nothing.

Doing well at 0-0, the Warriors experienced

some further controversy when an offside call was missed allowing Oliver White receive a well weighted ball to simply tap past Marko Stevanja.

With fire in their belly, the Warriors kept coming and pegged one back on 67 mins when Nicholas Jurcic crossed from left of the area to find the incoming Andrew Doig who chested down from Josh Pugh to drill home.

Soon after, Bulleen began to dominate more, and on 76 mins took the lead again when Jordan Templin tried to barge his way through the defensive line, the ball bobbled around and seemed to hit his hand as he advanced through to drill past Stevanja, but calls for handball were waved away.

The final nail was driven in on 83 mins when Luke Gallo was the beneficiary of a low cross wide of goal that was flicked on in front the Warriors defence to the waiting Gallo to tap in.

There are further opportunities to try and lever back some points and make for a grandstand finish however time is drawing quick with nine rounds to go.

Anglers made the most of the long weekend, getting stuck into a wide mix of species.

Whiting to more than 40cm were taken off St Leonards, with evenings and pippie baits working best. The town’s pier produced squid on size-three artificial jigs cast around the lights at night.

Corio Bay remained the standout location, especially for sort plastics anglers chasing salmon and pinkies from Geelong’s waterfront to the entrance of the grammar school lagoon.

Andrew Whitford spent another cold night out on the bay for a snapper of 4kg.

Garfish were taken at the rocks at Limeburners Point and St Helens on silverfish under a stick float.

Surf beaches continued producing Australian salmon, with Bancoora and 13th hot spots on the run in tide. The beaches also gave up gummy shark on fresh squid strips at night.

Many anglers travelled down the coast to chase school tuna on skirted lures off Portland and Port Fairy. Barrel-size fish were boated out from Apollo Bay. The estuaries produced good numbers of bream and estuary perch on vibe-style lures and Z-Man Grubz.

Lake Purrumbete was a popular destination, with anglers snagging a variety of fish. Redfin were a prime target for anglers who rounded up schools to jig with soft plastics, while big brown trout snapped up lures trolled or cast along the east bank at first or last light.

Lake Bullen Merri was consistent for Chinook salmon. Trolling 13.5g Tassie Devils down deep with the aid of a downrigger worked best.

Stony Creek Reservoir was solid for trout and redfin. Brown trout just on 1kg took Paco spoons cast from the lake margins, while bait anglers also found browns along with the odd rainbow trout.

Next week could provide some worthwhile squid action in 3m to 4m off Clifton Springs, along with good fishing for salmon along local surf beaches on incoming tides.

Cruising our coastline for big tuna could also be worthwhile, while freshwater anglers should head to Lake Bullen Merri for its consistent Chinook salmon.
