THE LATEST IN FOOD

When I was a kid I rode a bicycle without a helmet and roamed the neighbourhood with friends seeking adventure.

Dogs weren’t registered and rarely contained in yards. Pools didn’t have fences. There were no seatbelts.

Kids walked to school.

I could go on.

My story is not unusual.

On Queensland Day I listened to actor and author William McInnes talk about growing up in Redcliffe.

He spoke of a childhood where children were much freer than today.

His parents were loud and funny.

They joked around, gave him insulting nicknames. They knew how to find enjoyment in silliness, to make the mundane special.

At this week’s council meeting Cr Brian Stockwell mentioned not being the fun police when he argued against allowing hang gliders and paragliders to launch at Sunrise Beach.

After much debate the council decided to take a risk and let the gliders fly.

It made me think about the connection between fun and safety. Do we all want our family to be safe all the time?

Smoke billowed across Noosa for several days last week - but there’s no need for concern.

The scheduled burns through the National Park at Noosa Hill are part of the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) Sunshine Coast winter burn program.

Senior ranger Omar Bakhach said it was the first burn on Noosa Hill in the 20 years he’d been a ranger in the area and it was a textbook exercise with a 70 per cent scorch across the terrain.

“In the winter months it’s a lot less devastating for the bush and wildlife than if we didn’t do it, or if a fire was to go through there in summer in extreme conditions,“ he said.

“We burn from the top of the hill down and it goes through with a low intensity.

“It looks a bit harsh immediately after the fire, but we’ll get a lot of greening in the next fortnight.“ Omar said the Link section burn between Cooyar Street and the Noosa Dolphins Rugby

Union fields would be conducted during school holidays if the wind and weather conditions were suitable.

“QPWS have been assisted by the Queensland Fire and Emergency Service including the Queensland Rural Fire Service which will be tasked with protecting infrastructure on the burn perimeter.“ Omar said this year’s burn program would complement major fire break upgrades by QPWS in the Noosa area over recent years.

“The national park and other green space areas make Noosa the special place it is, and we must manage the fuel loads to reduce the risk of wildfires later in the year."

Omar said with wind changes common near the coast, there was no way to direct smoke drift.

He said there might be some traffic disruptions as a consequence and he urged people with respiratory or other health problems to seek medical advice.

PAID PARKING TO FIX TRAFFIC WOES

NOOSA RUNNING HOT WITH TOURISTS

Paid parking may soon become a reality with Noosa councillors poised to endorse the Noosa Transport Strategy 2017-2027 at tonight’s Ordinary Council Meeting after voting to support it at the general committee meeting on Monday.

Cr Frank Pardon echoed the councillors’ sentiments when he said the transport strategy was “the most important thing facing council going forward” and called for its implementation to begin.

“We know the (traffic) issue we have at Christmas and Easter will soon face us every day,” he said.

Cr Ingrid Jackson said Noosa welcomed visitors, but to reduce traffic congestion they had to “stop making driving in and parking the solution”.

The strategy contains recommendations made by independent consultants Parsons Brinckerhoff to fix Noosa’s traffic woes.

It suggests within the next two years that council introduce car parking management controls such as paid parking, trial a “Noosa style” shuttle bus and investigate park and ride services.

In addition, it says council should implement walk and ride to school programs and investigate the feasibility of priority transport lanes for buses, bikes and scooters.

Noosa is again leading the Sunshine Coast and Queensland in tourist growth with both tourist visits and spending on the increase.

The latest international visitor survey (IVS) data for the year ending March 2017 shows Noosa’s positive tourism growth is continuing.

Tourism Noosa CEO Damien Massingham said that the international results revealed that international visitor numbers and spend in Noosa has been on the rise since 2013.

“Noosa’s international spend increased 7.1 per cent to $98.3 million as compared to the whole of the Sunshine Coast increasing by 1.7 per cent and the total Queensland spend up 2.6 per cent,” he said.

“Noosa visitor numbers are also up 16.7 per cent to 163,000 compared to the whole of Sunshine Coast increase of 11.6 per cent and Queensland increasing by 6.8 per cent.”

“This is the fourth annual increase in both international spend and visitor numbers in Noosa for a March quarter.”

Damien said the UK remained Noosa’s largest international visitor group with 39,000 visitors making it an increase in numbers of almost four per cent.

Parsons Brinckerhoff were contracted in late 2015 to conduct the study. A draft transport strategy that opened for consultation in March received 244 submissions and more than 1200 comments through the Your Say Noosa website.

The study identified challenges to the strategy which include the growing numbers of visitors, peak time congestion, people’s dependence on cars and the deterrent to cycling and walking of a warm climate and hilly terrain.

It also found council funding was limited and a third of Noosa’s population were living in the hinterland with little or no public transport. ●

And it isn’t only more British coming to Noosa with visitors from New Zealand, Germany and the US on the rise. Visitor numbers from NZ grew eight per cent to 22,600, they rose 22 per cent from Germany to 24,000 and there were 8.5 per cent more people or 9000 visiting from the USA ,up 8.5 per cent.”

Damien said the increase was a reflection of Tourism Noosa’s active marketing in key high-yielding international markets which was guided by the Noosa Global Market Strategy launched 18 months ago.

“This is great news for Noosa and benefits all in Noosa as this additional injection of dollars into our economy means that local jobs are retained and created,” he said. ●

Surfing has provided Liz with some pretty tough challenges, but perhaps none more than trying to break into the Australian magazine industry.

“In 2014 I was working at CQU teaching literature and popular culture when I heard of a new surf magazine being launched on the coast. I jumped on board as the editor, but with their family issues and an impending pregnancy, the two other girls had to step away from the magazine, so I took over as sole owner of Sunshine Surf Girls,” Liz says.

“The industry in Australia is pretty tough, and we’ve

really had to work hard to prove ourselves. Surprisingly, the international market is much easier and accepting of newbies,” she says.

Success overseas has meant the fledgling magazine could survive in our dicey climate. With Liz’s tenacity, keen willingness to take on a challenge and perhaps her habit of over-estimating her own abilities, Sunshine Surf Girls has managed to pull off its third year and prove it’s here to stay.

“I’ve had to learn a lot about stats and marketing to prove to advertisers that women do surf and that we are a viable investment.

“I feel like SSG is the culmination of everything I’ve done to date work-wise. It’s the perfect combination of my love of surfing, my interest in women’s surfing, my grammar nerdiness and my desire to effect positive change for women in the surf industry by creating an international community of women surfers,” she says.

Being a mum of two has helped her to become wise in the pursuit of balance and happiness.

“I think that the most important thing in life is to stay true to yourself and to care less about what other people think. You only have one life, why not live it to its fullest?”

“It probably won’t be easy, in fact there will be times when it will be so much easier to give in and it will really suck trying to be you. But in the end, you can’t be anyone else or please everyone else, so just do what you can to be you. And sometimes, it will take a while to find out who you are. That’s OK too,” Liz says.

As a young girl, she dreamed of being the first female prime minister. As a woman, Liz worked hard to achieve a BA in Humanities, a Graduate Certificate of Education and an MA in Community Development and then on to teach Communications at USC, which is her day-job.

With a 10-year-old and a seven-year-old in tow, Liz and her husband of 20 years, Gabe have managed to pull off the hat-trick of juggling family life, careers, a magazine and a passion for surfing and travel.

“We all surf. My daughter has recently been surfing with Noosa Boardriders, and it’s great to be part of such a supportive group of surfers. We love it.”

“Being so busy, I don’t get out in the water as much as I’d like to, so staying fit to surf is a challenge. I do surf training with Joe from SurfFit to make sure I get as many

waves as possible when I do get in the water. It’s hard, but I love it,” she says.

Keeping all these balls in the air isn’t easy. Being true to what you love and committing to that path is part of Liz’s ability to pull off her busy lifestyle.

“Because it’s something I’m so passionate about (Sunshine Surf Girls) I’m happy for it to take over sometimes it’s easier than others and I do get overwhelmed. But I really believe in what I’m doing and in women’s surfing so in the end, it’s all worth it.“ Always on the hunt for some warm water, Liz and her family have made travel a part of their plans and have surfed in some of the world’s most idyllic oceans.

“I’ve travelled a bit with my husband and family and now with the magazine so have made it to Tahiti, Brazil, Mundaka, Hossegor, Indo, Fiji, Vanuatu, New Caledonia and the Maldives.

“My husband juggles being an environmental scientist with being a surf judge, and we lived in the Solomon Islands for a few years.

“We worked on a sustainable livelihoods project in the islands while I completed my masters in community development,” she says.

These days, Liz is finding herself keen to create a nest here and undertake just one more project as she embarks on owner building their first home - a little off-grid hippy house.

“I’ve been dreaming about this house for decades, so sometimes dreams do come true!

“I’m also going to keep following this dream of creating a world-class surf magazine for women. I’m not sure where that will end up, but I’ll keep working on it.“ With a determination for turning her dreams into reality, Liz is walking proof that she can do whatever she sets her mind to. ●

QUEEN’S HONOURS FOR LOCALS

David Thomas Restoring the Noosa River is a project “close to the heart” for David Thomas of Noosa Heads who was awarded an AM in the Queen's Birthday honours list for his philanthropic support of medical research, environmental conservation and cultural institutions.

David, who is already an OAM recipient, and his wife Barbara, who passed away in 2015, set up the philanthropic organisation the Thomas Foundation in 1998 after selling their business Cellarmaster Wines to Fosters for $160 million.

Describing himself as “an enabler” David said the foundation seeks out people who are the best in their field and works with them “to do what they do better”.

The Thomas Foundation recently co-funded, with Noosa Council and The Nature Conservancy, a study of Noosa River titled Historical ecology of the Noosa Estuary Fisheries by Dr Ruth Thurstan.

The study forms part of the work of

the Bring Back the Fish Project being undertaken by the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation.

David hopes it will revitalise the fish industry in the river for both recreational and commercial fishes.

“It’s our first river project. If it’s successful it will catch on in other rivers,” he said.

Another of the foundation’s projects, the Fight for the Reef Campaign, has landed some considerable punches.

It has helped secure a ban on capital dredge spoil dumping in the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area and protected untouched parts of the Reef coast from new port developments.

“When we began only one in five people knew the Barrier Reef was under threat,” he said.

The Thomas Foundation initially supported projects in education, the arts and conservation. In 2013 David’s love of the sea directed the foundation’s focus toward marine issues but it continues to support projects in the health, arts and education sectors and organisations including Nature Conservancy Australia, World Wildlife Fund Australia and The Australian Marine Conservation Society. ●

Leslie Hall A lifelong contribution to the conservation of Australasian bats through research, student mentoring

and public engagement has earned Dr Leslie Selwyn Hall of Maleny recognition as a Member of the Order of Australia (AM).

Fifty years as a bat scientist and researcher, the publication of more than 200 articles and four books and numerous national and international forum presentations began in 1962 with a CSIRO scholarship.

Dr Hall said bats were critical to the pollination of many plants such as eucalypts which had flowers that only opened at night.

He said the fear that they spread hendra virus directly to horses was incorrect and after 23 years since the virus was first detected the link between the bats and horses had yet to be determined.

Dr Hall was a senior lecturer at the

Department of Veterinary Anatomy at University of Queensland from 19882001 and a visiting fellow at the University of Malaysia between 19922005.

Among his many roles he has been a scientific advisor for Bat Conservation International and a member, Chiropteran Specialist Group, International Union for Conservation of Nature, since 1987.

He is currently a flying fox adviser to Sunshine Coast Regional Council and a member of Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve Management Committee.

Neil Rees Emeritus Professor Neil Robert Rees of Peregian Springs has been honoured with a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for his significant service to the law and education, legal reform and mental health.

Professor Rees has been a member of a number of statutory tribunals including the NSW Administrative Decisions Tribunal, the NSW Mental Health Review Tribunal and the Victorian Mental Health Review Board.

Professor Rees was Foundation Professor and Co-Head of University of the Sunshine Coast Law School, Faculty of Arts, Business and Law, University of the Sunshine Coast from 2013-'15. ●

Hang gliders and paragliders look set to continue launching their aircraft from Tingira Crescent Sunrise Beach, despite council concerns residents' complaints about privacy and nuisance would result in litigation.

The majority of Noosa councillors voted in favour of the continuation following a strenuous debate on Monday during Noosa Council’s general committee meeting.

Cr Ingrid Jackson said there had been on average only three to four complaints a year, a survey of Sunrise Beach residents showed the majority supported the activity and about 50 Noosa Shire residents were participants. Legal advice showed litigation was unlikely to succeed, she said, and wind and weather restrictions meant the launch site was used only about three days a month.

Councillors Tony Wellington and Brian Stockwell, who opposed the continued launch site use, argued there were safety and privacy concerns.

Cr Wellington said the entanglement of a paraglider on powerlines at the site last month showed the activity was not suitable in the populated urban area.

The launch site permit will be issued subject to annual reviews, can be revoked by council at any time and requires the development by Sunshine Coast Sports Aviators (SCSA) of a management plan.

SCSA already requires pilots to be SCSA members and adequately educated.

A paraglider who hit powerlines at Tingira Crescent Sunrise Beach in May is the only recorded accident on the site.

They have banned the use of inflight cameras and are working with council on a management plan.

SCSA secretary Paul Reilly said it was good to see council had listened to what the club had put forward to work with residents.

“The sport's been going on there for 50 years. To stop it on the basis of complaints of a few is unfair to those who so enjoy the sport,” he said.

Council's decision was to be ratified at the ordinary general meeting.

Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service manage launch sites at north Sunshine Beach and Teewah which has just undergone renovation.

Other hang gliding and paragliding launch sites will be considered in the development of a Regional Sports Facility Plan to be funded by a State Government grant of $75,000. The plan aims to provide for a range of activities across the Sunshine Coast, Noosa and Gympie Regional Council areas defined as difficult to locate.

NEWS MINISTER ANNOUNCES INNOVATION FUNDING Leeanne Enoch, State Minister for Innovation, Science and the Digital Economy and Minister for Small Business, took the time to meet Dewey, the Council’s Library Service Robot, while in town this week.

As part of her visit to announce $500,000 for Noosa and the Sunshine Coast from the State’s new innovation fund, the minister toured Noosa’s high-tech Cooroy Library, with its grassed roof and technology centre. She also met-with Noosa-based entrepreneurs.

Last year, Cooroy Library was named one of the world’s coolest libraries. Noosa Library Service was the first public library in Australia to enlist the help of a NAO Humanoid robot to provide coding and computer programming training to residents. �

It’s thanks to a donation of a “little library� from Noosa Library Service.

Practice owner Dr Ann Buchan and practice manager Wendy Haebich took delivery of the little library, stocked with 30 new books, from Noosa Library Service staff last week. “These free books will be great for young children,� said Dr Ann, a keen reader since she was three years of age. “We plan to make this a central part of our new children’s waiting area.�

The little library, funded by State Library of Queensland’s First 5 Forever family literacy program, was built by Noosa Men’s Shed.

BIZARRE EVERYDAY LIFE The small but bizarre happenings in everyday life are often the strongest memories for actor and author William McInnes, who shared a few tidbits with an audience at Noosa Library on Queensland Day on Saturday.

William grew up in Redcliffe with an Irish father and Welsh mother who used to “yell a lot�. “Never be afraid to let the world know you’re alive,� his father used to tell him. William recalled how even household chores like adjusting the

television antenna became “Indiana Jones� events in his boyhood home.

These stories of childhood incidents, acting mishaps and practical jokes have become fodder for his growing collection of books and newspaper columns.

Not taking yourself too seriously and just writing what you see was his advice to others who were considering taking up writing. “Life can be great but you don’t have to be Winston Churchill to have a great life,� he said. �

Local celebrities and business people will be caged up at Noosa Civic Shopping Centre this week to fundraise for the Noosaville State School chaplaincy program.

Until Friday 16 June those caged including former Perfect Match co-host Kerrie Friend - will be helping to secure funds to pay school chappy Michelle Gameiro for her services.

Michelle said in order to run her full-time chaplaincy service she needs to raise 72 per cent of her service costs.

“As chaplain, my role takes on many forms. I provide a free breakfast program each morning and offer one-on-one as well as group social skills programs. I also support students and families through their many issues including grief and loss, financial difficulties and isolation,” she said.

JAZZING UP THE JUNCTION Noosa students want to liven up Noosa Junction by bringing in businesses like an Apple Store and nightclubs to attract young people to the precinct.

Noosa District State High School Year 10 geography students Jasmin Smith and Bailey Cannell took to community radio to voice their opinions to announcer Pete Dillon last week.

Pete surprised the students with the revelation that he owns a business in Noosa Junction and was concerned a new big businesses might take customers away from existing shops.

“With any change to an area, it is very difficult to please everyone, but we hope that the introduction of popular shops like the Apple Store will create more foot traffic for existing businesses," Jasmin said.

The students were guided in their Noosa Junction redesign by University of the Sunshine Coast’s Associate Professor Jo Rosier and Noosa councillor Jess Glasgow. ●

BY MARGARET MACCOLL Musicians roamed the Noosa River foreshore on the weekend as Noosa hosted its inaugural Australian National Busking Championships regional finals.

The Noosa Busking Championships are part of a nationwide cultural celebration of music and street performance with five regional competitions around Australian in 2017.

The busking championships were presented by the Rotary Club of Noosa Heads and the Noosa Come Together Festival with profits to be distributed to local disability charities including the Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club’s Sailability program.

Winners from regional competitions will compete in the grand final of the National Busking Competition to be held in Cooma, NSW, in November. â—?

Horses are kicking up a stink with residents at Noosa North Shore by leaving behind their droppings.

Local resident Nick Hluszko said over many decades organisations such as the Noosa North Shore Residents Association, NPA, Noosa Council, State and Federal bodies had worked to protect the North Shore from development and to protect and enhance environmental values.

“Numerous arguments were used to do so including the impact upon flora.

“Yet we allow horses here that graze in paddocks on the southern shore somewhere or get fed commercial feedstock, all of which can contain seeds that can easily be sewn on the North Shore.

“It therefore perplexes me that over the past 20 years as horse riding activities have gained popularity that there are not tighter controls over commercial and leisure activities associated with this pastime.

Specifically I am asking the question as to why horses are not ‘bagged’ to capture their droppings or excrement?”

Nick wants to know if it’s not too much to ask that horses be bagged on the beach.

“We ask dog owners to pick up their dogs' excrement why not horse riders?” he said. ●

More than the usual numbers of sharks have been spotted around Noosa and locals say they are looking for a feed of bait fish and mullet. One of the morning swimmers at Noosa Main Beach last week was startled when he raised his head to take a breath and saw a bunch of people waving and shouting shark to him from the shore. He looked up to see a couple of sharks too close for comfort and headed at super speed to the beach. A large shark was also reported off Granite beach last week. ●

NEWS STUDENTS SAFER ON ROADS More than 120 students from St Teresa’s Catholic College should be safer on the roads after taking part recently in the Rotary Youth Driver Awareness (RYDA) program.

Students take one day out of school to learn practical road safety delivered through the program.

RYDA targets 16-18 year old students and includes six interactive sessions delivered to small student groups covering topics such as hazard perception, distraction management, vehicle safety, stopping distance, fatigue and experiences of a crash survivor.

Rotary Club of Noosa president Tess Alexandroff said if even one life can be saved from this training, then it’s all worthwhile.

“Since 2009, the combined Rotary clubs have held 44 program days, with 3778 Year 11 students having attended the RYDA Program locally,” she said.

“To illustrate the larger point, more than 500,000 have attended RYDA Australia-wide since the program’s inauguration some 16 years ago.”

The combined clubs of Noosa, Noosa Heads, Noosa Daybreak and Cooroy assisted at the program held at the House With No Steps in Doonan.

Rotary hopes the program which now attracts about 64 per cent of students will attract all Year 11 students.

KOKODA TEACHES MATESHIP Forty four students from Good Shepherd Lutheran College tackled the recent Kokoda Challenge through the beautiful D’Aguilar National Forest, raising over $2500 for the Kokoda Youth Foundation. There were 11 teams of four students each accompanied by a teacher or parent leader, which participated in the 15km, 30km or 48km course. Co-ordinator Jason Green said it was awesome to see the Kokoda spirit in action among the students.

“Mates helping mates through the tough times - that’s what it is all about,” he said.

The Kokoda Youth Foundation takes its origin from Australian soldiers who fought on the Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea during WWII. A HOME OF THEIR OWN Esme Tait’s wish of seeing her former home become a place where the community can come together became a reality last Wednesday.

Ms Tait cut the ribbon of Noosa’s newest community facility with a grin ear to ear.

“The house looks beautiful in its new setting. I’m so pleased to see my old home transformed for the benefit of the community to enjoy,” she said.

The cottage has been a labor of love for a number of volunteers giving up their time to bring this space to life.

After being relocated in Earl Street, Tewantin in 2005, Noosa Council partnered with United Synergies and Hutchinson Builders and Noosa Heads Rotary Club to restore the beauty back to her old self.

recognise Tewantin today after nearly a century of residential and commercial development. What I am sure they would recognise is the community spirit shown by their daughter, Esme.

Esme was born in 1922 and lived in this house until 2009. She donated this historic Queenslander to the Noosa Shire Council so the public can enjoy it for generations to come. The house will serve as a community hub for Tewantin, giving local community organisations much needed meeting and office spaces.

It is now the long awaited home of Noosa Heads Rotary and with a heartfelt speech from Jim Bennett, who after 15 years with the club said that “finding a permanent home means a lot.

Some of the visionary members are no longer with us and I am sure they are watching. This day is also for them”. ●

SLIPPED HIS MIND It seems the mayor forgot to mention more than $100,000 in defined costs (i.e. $77,000 for the purchase of two bus battery chargers) and May’s Financial Report shows council has only completed $12.8 million actual of the financial year’s $24.6 million capital works budget (two months left).

As a regular observer of Noosa Shire Council meetings I think this council is in disarray - they are an under-resourced council that many believe was de-amalgamated with a flawed submission.

In his latest “electoral update” Glen Elmes attacks the Queensland Labor Government and claims that “only the LNP has the experience and competence to power up the economy, generate jobs and manage the state’s debt”.

Does Glen think Noosa and Queensland voters have such short memories? It was only a few years ago that Glen, as a minister in the Newman LNP Government, was sent packing into opposition when Queenslanders rejected the arrogant way he and his party ran this state.

Recently the Queensland LNP has been described as “Not very good. Very, very mediocre” by none other than the Federal Attorney General George Brandis.

With the Queensland LNP this year rejecting important reforms such as dying with dignity and legalising abortion, Glen should think very seriously before going on the attack.

It is very difficult to make sense of Noosa Council’s financial plans given that rates increases 2014-’15 were 0 per cent, 2015’16 were 1.9 per cent and at the same time council had borrowings of $40 million from Queensland Treasury Corporation that required service costs of $6 million (interest and principal). Borrowings of $40 million represent approximately 50 per cent of council’s yearly revenue. Perhaps more realistic rates increases would have been better and reduced borrowing and subsequent service costs.

Council’s mayor has always claimed that council has significant cash reserves of $17 million, so why did council borrow from QTC an additional $0.8 million in 2015 instead of drawing down from cash reserves.?The mayor has always highlighted the significant cash reserves held by council, however nothing is said about the significant borrowings with QTC. ZERO TOLERANCE As with many other local arterial roadways, Beckmans Road traffic is often congested and may also feature, at any time, some inscrutable person stolidly travelling with impunity at up to 30km/h below the various speed limits, some of which have been lowered already in lieu of providing some more passing lanes. Decent four-lane upgrades of problem roads are required yesterday of course, starting with Noosa-Eumundi Road and Beckmans Road but government planning and our politicians respectively have been simply inadequate.

The routine gridlock on Beckmans Road at the school is epic, being compounded grievously by the 40km/h section operating for four hours a day on five working days of the week. There appears to be no designated access along Beckmans Road for buses

Traffic would still be slowed by negotiating the roundabout near the school. No standing signs or guard rails for a suitable distance along both sides of Beckmans Road could serve to prevent anyone from pulling over and having their child/ren scale the school fence.

OILS AIN’T OILS I would assume that the Noosa “brand” has taken a lot of money and effort to be as successful as it is. It seems a pity that it can be so easily tarnished by council employer decisions. Boating is one of the many pursuits enjoyed by both tourists and locals, yet the council seems to treat these users with indifference. About November last year, apparently someone complained about an oil spill near the Gympie Terrace boat ramp, and as the council must respond to every complaint, they promptly stopped the boaties from washing the salt off their boats (assuming that a boatie did this - not sure how this can happen even with smoky two-stroke motors). I’ve been using these ramps for 11

years (and yes I don’t consider myself a local - yet!) and have only ever seen the tannin from the trees accumulate in the gutters. But if the council has seen oil, it must have been there.

After questioning a council employee he advised that they had investigated putting in some sort of oil trap, but have now said this will not happen. I have spoken to many boaties since then, especially during the holidays, and they have been annoyed and amazed that this facility is denied to them. It certainly did not enhance their experience. While this is not one of the more serious issues of the day, it seems incredible that such a standard facility as running water that is present at most concrete boat ramps, is denied to us.

One might suggest that the council be consistent in their approach to stopping oils entering the waterways by turning off all the taps and showers near the beaches. Those highly toxic chemicals in suntan lotions are also being sent to the drains that lead directly back to the beach.

Lake McKenzie on Fraser Island has signs requesting that you put on the suntan lotions after the swim, in an aid to keep that water pristine. I think our “brand” people would not like that approach, so why do it to the boaties?

We are so lucky to live here ... I can’t stop saying it.

I’m a volunteer at Noosa Regional Gallery and this week I was walking to the gallery along the river when a great flock of white birds flew past me. I knew that they weren’t cockatoos as they weren’t ‘squawking’. Their sounds were so pleasant, lyrical, wonderful.

I’d never seen them before. There were more in a tree at the entrance to the gallery.

Lucy from the gallery came out, placing the gallery signs and she was intrigued as well. A council man came out. We all looked, admired and wondered about these birds.

I’ve since researched and I think that they are little corellas.

Description from Birdlife Australia: “Little corellas often indulge in an activity that is uncommon in the bird world - they like to play. Sometimes they slide down the steep roofs of wheat silos, falling off the edge and then flying back to the top to slide down again. They have also been seen perched on the blades of windmills, spinning round and around, falling off and then regaining a precarious grip on the blades. Even when perched, little corellas often hang upside down, or dangle below the perch, holding on with its bill.”

BUYERS SHED CITY FOR THE GOOD LIFE MORE people are ditching the city life for a tree or sea change, according to the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

CoreLogic research analyst Cameron Kusher said the latest internal migration data shows an increasing number of inter-state and intra-state population movements are to either sea change/ tree change regions or the outskirts of the capital cities.

“Each year the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) publishes data on internal migration across the regions of Australia.

Internal migration data counts the number of residents moving within the state as well as across state borders,” he said.

According to the data, the Gold Coast

New data shows more people are choosing a tree change over the big city lights when it’s time to move. saw the most internal arrivals at 6428 persons over the 2015/16 financial year, a 39.4 per cent increase on last year and the first time the Gold Coast has seen the

nation’s highest rate of internal migration.

The Sunshine Coast came in a close second with 6200 internal migrants over the 12-month period, followed by Melbourne’s West with 5491 and Geelong with 4216 internal migrants.

“Of the top 25 regions for nett internal migration over the past year, 13 were located outside of the capital cities generally in areas either adjacent or close to capital cities,” Mr Kusher said.

“These regions were a mix of sea change and tree change type locations.

Interestingly, each of these regional markets has recorded an increase in nett internal migration over the year."

Mr Kusher said the overall data indicated migration was gathering pace

in select regions of the country, a number of which were sea change/tree change areas.

The data also showed an 8747 net internal migration loss over the same 12-month period for inner south-west Sydney, which Mr Kusher attributed to the high cost of living.

“Sydney is increasingly shedding residents to other parts of the country and this is most likely linked to the high cost of housing. Coastal, regional areas of NSW and Victoria along with Melbourne and Brisbane appear to be significant benefactors of the deteriorating housing affordability in Sydney as an increasing number of people leave the city for more affordable locations,” he said. ●

Aboriginal singer-songwriter Scott Darlow releases heartland rock single ‘Runaway’ from his 2016 critically-acclaimed album ‘Sorry.’

Runaway is a strikingly beautiful ballad based on a true story about a refugee couple escaping political danger from their home country with only each other for support. The catchy track is layered with summery guitars, smooth vocals, light percussion and a hooky chorus that will have you grooving along to the couple’s incredible journey.

As John Lennon once said, everyone has their own little story. Radio and television personalities Hamish and Andy, complete with matching velvet jackets, have not only discovered this but they’ve brought it to the small screen - real everyday Australians telling real stories.

The stories are supposed to be funny, though the first one was more squirmingly embarrassing with moments of humour.

The dynamic duo, who are pretty good at spinning a tale or two themselves, interview the storyteller and then it cuts to the re-enactment. And while it won’t be everyone’s cup of tea and might miss the mark here and there, it is something that hasn’t been tried for a while - something different, fresh and original and not a copy of a show made somewhere else in the world and there is no cook/singer/home renovator trying to win anything. ●

SPAN'S THE MAN This Saturday night, Eumundi is set to rock as blues harmonica legend Doc Span joins forces with guitar virtuoso Tim Gaze at the Imperial Hotel.

RECORD NUMBER OF ARTISTS AT EXHIBITION Sunshine Coast artists are working industriously on their submissions in preparation for the upcoming Tall Trees Exhibition in the Noosa hinterland.

The annual exhibition in Cooran aims to recognise, promote and bring together

local artistic talent, and provides a unique opportunity for artists to share their work in a public space and offer them for sale to patrons from near and afar.

This year’s exhibition, featuring over 70 local creatives, has set a record for the number of artists participating in the exhibition which has established itself as a must-see event in the local arts calendar.

For the first time, this year’s exhibition over the 1 and 2 July will take place at multiple venues in Cooran in a collaboration between local businesses and the community. The exhibition will stretch from one end of King Street to the other, inviting patrons to meander about as they enjoy the hinterland scenery and view the work of local artisans in various mediums in a variety of settings.

Exhibition venue opening times will vary from 7am to 5pm over the 1and 2 July and between them will cater for breakfast, lunch and dinner. COOK CLOUD EGGS' BRIGHT FUTURE Q: What are cloud eggs?

A: Cloud eggs are eggs, prepared with a technique that makes the whites puff up. Like clouds. But also kind of like roasted cauliflower, which would not be as catchy a name.

Q: Uh, why is this a thing?

A: Because they look good on Instagram. People make them, photograph them, and post them using the hashtag #cloudeggs. Also because they are “fun”, I guess?

Q: What do they taste like?

A: They taste like egg-flavoured marshmallows.

Q: How do you make them?

A: You separate the eggs and the yolks, then you whip the egg whites until they form stiff peaks, according to a popular recipe. Then stir in some parmesan cheese (and chives and ham, if you desire), and scoop out the fluffy eggs onto a baking sheet covered in parchment paper.

Make a little indentation for the yolk, but don’t put it in yet - first, bake the clouds for two minutes, then take them out and add the yolk, and bake for another three. But watch them carefully, because if they get too brown, you’ll have the aforementioned cauliflower problem.

BY HOLLIE HARRIS If you are over 55 and have been wanting to improve your mental health and wellbeing then Sunshine Coast Council’s free Healthy Sunshine Coast Seniors Mental Health Program could be for you.

The 16-week program will start on Monday 3 July at Community Focus Maroochydore, from 10am to noon.

The sessions will include a light lunch allowing participants to socialise and make connections with each other.

Community Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said in 2016 council launched Healthy Sunshine Coast, a health and wellbeing initiative which had proved extremely popular in the community and council was once again shining the spotlight on our seniors.

“I am pleased to announce another round of the Healthy Sunshine Coast Seniors, Mental Health and Wellbeing Program will again be delivered in partnership with Community Focus and the Queensland Mental Health Commission,” Cr McKay said.

“This program was specifically tailored for over-55s providing an opportunity for 30 participants to acknowledge and reflect upon their mental health, taking action to improve their wellbeing, while giving participants the tools to participate fully in

The Healthy Sunshine Coast Seniors Mental Health and Wellbeing Program will be delivered in two stages: · Stage one will assist seniors set goals to improve their physical health. Participants

will gain a better understanding of how important a good diet and regular exercise is to our mental health. This will be followed by an experiential session connecting participants with existing community-based activity programs. · The second stage will see participants supported by a Peer Support Worker who will continue to work on cognitive and physical tools to improve participants’ mental wellbeing.

COMMUNITY UPDATES LEARN ABOUT CLEVER CORVIDS For most people crows are little more than annoying scavengers with harsh calls and even worse reputations. Crows are members of the Corvid family and in Australia our local species the Torresian Crow is the typical corvid of the tropics. “A huge amount of recent research paints an interesting picture of these so called ‘bird brains’, with corvids now recognised as among the smartest animals of all, including mammals” says Professor Darryl Jones of Queensland’s Griffith University.

Professor Jones is a behavioural ecologist and will share his recent research findings about ‘clever corvids’ at Noosa Parks Association’s Friday Environment Forum on June 16 at the Environment Centre, 5 Wallace Drive, Noosaville. BY MARGARET MACCOLL The Biggest Morning Tea held in Peregian Beach Village was hailed a success as residents and business owners joined in to share cake and raise money for the Cancer Council Queensland.

Organiser Jan Romanowski said Annie’s Books on Peregian had run the event from the bookshop for many years.

This year the knit and charity group, Vegie Village and Peregian Beach Community House lent a hand and baked.

There were plenty of delicious treats on sale and five entries in the competition for the best cake judged by Noosa MP Glen Elms and won by Chevrolet (Chevvy) Jones.

Jan said that, more than a fund-raiser, the event brought people together.

The Under 7 Gold boys played a strenuous match against the Buddina Sea Lions to secure a 4-1 victory. Ryan Atkinson scored Noosa’s first goal in the opening minutes of the game, and backed it up by scoring again in the second half. Nate Morgan also scored twice for the team, demonstrating his impressive power off the boot. Player of the Match this week went to Byron Connell for his determination and

positional play. Well done to all!

Under 9 Black took out another outstanding win against Buddina, with the score finishing at 11-4. Awesome efforts by everyone on field. Goal shooters were Lenny, Rohnan, Cooper and Kallum.

VICTORY TO NOOSA’S OWN CROQUET TEAM NOOSA CROQUET Both Noosa’s pennant and shield teams were active this past week with the Noosa Pennant team hosting Heradlam-Buderim at home.

As usual the Pennant matches are hard and closely fought.

Noosa finished the victors winning six matches to four, with total hoops just one head for Noosa - 63 to 62.

At the end of the singles, the matches were tied at four all, so it was Noosa taking both doubles that gave the victory to Noosa.

A GENTLE TWEAK OF THE TRUMP RUMP I’ve laid off Trump for a few months now, mostly out of respect for the couple of readers who supported him - and possibly still do, despite the mounting evidence of his narcissism bordering on insanity.

But after his scuttling of the Paris Accord and his increasing belligerence towards all forms of environmental commonsense, it’s time to sink the slipper in, just a bit, while also noting that Queensland Labor’s sycophantic embrace of Adani’s plan to extract the beating heart of western Queensland has equally frightening ramifications closer to home.

One of the things I most love about my subscription to the New Yorker Online is its Sunday reprints from the archives. Editor David Remnick digs deep to find quality journalism from the past that reflects the world we live in, and I’ve read no better example of this than last weekend’s republication of Rachel Carson’s magnificent and monumental “Silent Spring”.

Over three hefty instalments, that first appeared in June 1962 (when America was pre-occupied with the Kruschev menace and Jackie’s plans to tart up the White House) Carson forensically details in her classic and compelling style the dangers of the pesticide DDT. As Remnick notes, the articles jump-started the environmental movement and resulted in the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency and many other layers of protection that Trump is now dismantling.

Here is just a taste of the power of Carson’s prose: “The history of life on earth is a history

of the interaction of living things and their surroundings. To an overwhelming extent, the physical form and the habits of the earth’s vegetation and its animal life have been moulded and directed by the environment. Over the whole span of earthly time, the opposite effect, in which life modifies its surroundings, has been relatively slight. It is only within the moment of time represented by the 20th century that one species - man - has acquired significant power to alter the nature of his world, and it is only within the past 25 years that this power has achieved such magnitude that it endangers the whole earth and its life. The most alarming of all man’s assaults upon the environment is the contamination of the air, earth, rivers, and seas with dangerous, and even lethal, materials. This pollution has rapidly become almost universal, and it is for the most part irrecoverable; the chain of evil it initiates, not only in the world that must support life but in living tissues, is for the most part irreversible ...

“As Albert Schweitzer has said, ‘Man can hardly even recognise the devils of his own creation.’ It took hundreds of millions of years to produce the life that now inhabits the earth - eons of time, in which that developing and evolving and diversifying life reached a state of adjustment to its surroundings. To be sure, the environment, rigorously shaping and directing the life it supported, contained hostile elements.

Certain rocks gave out dangerous radiation; even within the light of the sun, from which all life draws its energy, there were

short-wave radiations with power to injure.

But given time - time not in years but in millennia - life adjusted, and a balance was reached. Time was the essential ingredient.

Now, in the modern world, there is no time.”

I hope The Donald found time between tweets to read and reflect. And pigs might fly.

RELICS WREAK HAVOC As forewarned in these pages, Australia’s oldest competitive surfers washed up in Noosa last weekend for Noosa Malibu Club’s annual Wrecks and Relics Get-Together, and while there was no need to lock up your grandmas, the elder statesmen and women of our sport cut loose and demolished a reasonable right-hand bank down by the second groyne.

The club calls it a “get-together” because it’s meant to imply it’s all in fun, but in fact nothing could be further from the truth.

Even this year’s slightly taste-questionable slogan, “stoke before stroke”, suggests a no-holds-barred battle for just a few more waves before time’s up. Make no mistake, the Wrecks are here to take a trophy home, even if it means a little collateral damage.

Just one example: a member of the group of elderly thugs known as the Wednesday Wanderers (who shall remain nameless but let’s call him Mick) received a world record four interference penalties (one of them on your columnist) in a single heat! His explanation - “I was out of rhythm.”

It all became the stuff of good storytelling over a few beers at The Reef on Sunday night, of course, and, God, Allah

A NOTE FROM THE OTHER HAPPY PLACE By the time you read this I’ll be reclining by the pool in my other happy place, a good book in hand, having surfed the left at the end of the street for an hour before enjoying a leisurely breakfast on the terrace at Nyoman’s while watching the local hotties tear up the rivermouth right.

I know, I know, it’s a dirty job but someone has to do it. And as soon as the sun gets near enough to overhead I’ll be slaving away over a hot laptop in my little tropical office, pausing between paragraphs to swim a lap or two. I’ve written three books and countless articles in this little bolt-hole, and I’ve come to regard it as a place of great productivity, even though it’s just a tiny desk in the corner of our bedroom.

And there’s no need to rug up in the mornings! ●

SWAG OF MEDALS FOR KYLE’S STYLE Noosa Gymnast Kyle McCartney has returned from the Australian Gymnastics Championships in Melbourne with an Australian Title and three other awards.

Competing at the end of May over two days at Hisense Arena in Melbourne, Kyle was the first representative for the Cooroy Gymnastics Club to compete for the Queensland State Team at Nationals.

Kyle won his National title on Pommel finishing a clear first and scoring well on the pommel over the two days of competition.

The pommel is probably the most technical of all gymnastics apparatus for men.

He kept his routine clean and was rewarded for his consistency with the highest scores on both days.

Kyle finished on the podium with a second place on floor which is his favourite event.

His floor routine was packed with difficulty including layout triple twist as well as sticking his double back and front somersaults.

Kyle also finished in third place on parallel bars contributing to his overall achievement.

Competing over the six apparatus with such consistency over two days of

competition saw Kyle awarded third place in the all around division.

His all-round two day score of 138.06 ranks him 14th in Australia amongst the Senior International Men's Division despite him turning 18 just days before the competition.

This is a great achievement for the Sunshine Coast Grammar student who is also completing Year 12.

Kyle has now been short-listed for an international open tour at the end of the year where he hopes to compete at his first international event. ●

TENNIS KIDS MAKE A RACQUET THANKS TO PARTNERSHIP Ninety students at Sunshine Beach State School have received brand new tennis racquets, thanks to ANZ and Tennis Australia’s School Partnership Program.

ANZ’s support of the ANZ Tennis Hot Shots program has ensured students in their first year of school at a Tennis Australia partner school receive a brand new tennis racquet, with an astonishing 80,000 taking up the opportunity since January 2015.

ANZ Tennis Hot Shots ambassador Alicia Molik is delighted to see the opportunities the program offers to young children around Australia.

“ANZ has helped us deliver 80,000 racquets to children around

Sunshine Beach Prep students ready to hit the courts! the country and you can’t wipe the smiles off the kids’ faces,” Molik said. “It’s fantastic to see so many tennis racquets in the hands of young children, which really encourages them to participate in physical activity while doing

something that is fun.”

Sunshine Beach Physical Education teacher Cameron Porter said the ANZ Hot Shots tennis program is designed specifically to meet the needs of children.

“With the inclusion of smaller

courts, lighter racquets and low compression balls it makes tennis fun and easy to learn,” he said.

“In addition to the skill improvement students also benefit from such programs in terms of the child gaining a sense

of achievement, self-worth and confidence. It helps their social skills and develops a sense of sportsmanship and fair play.

Evidence also suggests a positive correlation between children’s physical activity participation and academic achievement.”

Tennis Australia CEO Craig Tiley firmly believes sports like tennis are vital to children’s health and wellbeing at a young age.

“Sport has, and continues to play, a very significant role in the lives of all Australian families and communities,” Tiley said.

Prep students were delighted to receive their racquets from their respective sporting house captains. ●

YOUNG BOXERS HAVE HARD-HITTING IMPACT

BY RON LANE For two Noosa's boxing clubs, Impact Boxing Academy Cooroy and Noosa Box Office, there has been plenty activity.

The Impact amateur team, last weekend had two novice fighters taking part in a tournament at Beau Desert and a third fighting in Sydney.

At Beau Desert, in only his second fight, Impact's 10-year-old Cohen Robinson, won a points decision against an opponent from a club in Roma.

"The lad started well forcing his opponent to take a standing eight count in the first round. However his opponent came back stronger than ever, with both the second and third rounds being really tough going. It could have been anyone’s fight; however Cohen came home really strong with good combinations which saw him get the decision,” Coach Mark Evans said.

In the second fight, Cohen’s 11-year-old sister Paige was having her first bout.

With a great display of straight punching, her opponent, very early in the first round, took a standing eight count and with Paige’s aggressive follow up and well directed punches the referee stepped in and stopped the event. “A first round TKO in her very first fight. The way she picked her shots for a novice was really outstanding. For these fighters it was a great performance; both showed plenty of promise,” Evans said.

In the Sydney bout which took place on Friday night at Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs PCYC Leagues club, veteran Luke Martin, also of the Impact Academy, fought local lad Tameur Tafari.

Several new members have joined the amateur ranks and are also preparing for their first fights.

The Noosa District State High School (NDSHS) Year 7 and 8 rugby league team won 30 to 26 against Nambour State High School in last week’s match, with the two teams facing off again this week in the finals.

The NDSHS team showed much courage against Nambour, with coach Martin Stieger very proud of his team’s efforts.

“Our boys came up against a much bigger opposition and really stood up to be counted. They showed courage, team work, determination and a willingness to win by never giving up. These are some of the qualities that need to be encouraged to shape these boys into young men,” Stieger said.

NOOSA RIVER REALLY PRODUCING The Noosa River has been a real standout over the last week and with the water getting cooler, those great winter species are starting to shine, starting at the river mouth and dog beach: there have been plenty of quality bream being landed off the rocks at the river mouth and around at the dog beach sand bags.

Most anglers are using fresh strips of mullet, whole small Hardy Heads, white bait and prawns.

On the other side of the river, the Frying Pan has also seen good bream.

This time of year you’ll often find some good tailor around the frying pan, medium size poppers and walk the dog lures are a good option and provide plenty of entertainment as you see the fish crunch the lure.

Woods Bays and The Noosa Sound have had mixed schools of trevally including golden, diamond and big giant trevally with early morning and late afternoon the prime times, again the surface lures have been very popular here.

Another great option is to fish Micro jigs these lures are a standout for chasing trevally throughout the river and allow you to cover a lot of area and fish the entire water column.

Soft plastics are another consistent producer with a good mixture of baitfish and prawn imitations producing the goods.

Take the time to rig your plastics nice and straight and use a scent for best results!

Up on the Ski Runs, the odd jewfish has been coming from the deeper holes, large flathead up to 80cm have also been reported from the same area with soft plastics and live baits doing the job.

On the offshore scene, things have again been a little hit and miss depending on

Stuart Hargraves with a couple of quality reef fish. the wind and swell, with the wind blowing offshore the pick of the reefs has been the closer reefs with Sunshine and Jew Shoal at the top of the list.

on the most wanted list. The closer reefs are really starting to produce with some good quality snapper coming from Sunshine Reef, Jew Sholes and Halls Reef.

Other options you will see when fishing

these reefs are grass sweetlip, pearl perch, Moses perch, Venus tusk fish, cod and Maori cod.

Fishing plastics is great, as at this time of the year there can be a fair few smaller picker that will destroy a bait as soon as it gets to the bottom; leaving nothing but a clean hook, so fishing plastics keeps you in the game.

A little further afield the Barwon Banks fished extremely well for those with larger craft that could handle the conditions, large snapper, pearl perch, cobia and jew are all on the menu.

The reefs off Double Island are also a great hunting ground and have also come up with some larger snapper and nice coral trout.

On the beach, the fishing has been excellent, with the start of the migration of tailor up to Frazer Island, big winter bream are also on the menu and of course the everpresent dart.

Most anglers are gearing up for the tailor run at this time of the year with the area between Teewah and Double Island on Noosa’s North Shore a real favourite with anglers, the good old-fashioned pilchard is still the favoured bait of many.

Rigged on ganged hooks and cast to the back of the gutters and then rolled under the white water has always been the most successful method.

Casting slugs is also a great way to get amongst them - especially if you have a good school of fish in the gutter. Larger winter bream are also on the chew and fish well over the 30cm mark not uncommon.

FAREWELL BOPPO TALLON - AND THANKYOU It must have been a strange sight for people passing by; three men, two in their early fifties and the third in his late sixties sitting together in the departure lounge of the Maroochydore Airport with documents on their laps and nearby vacant seats.

The three men were lifesavers Ian Young and yours truly from Noosa and seated opposite was our advisor the legendary Ron “Boppo” Tallon.

The documents were two constitutions and correspondence, relevant to our discussion.

Reason for the meeting was that we needed clarification regarding a certain matter; the best to approach was without a doubt Boppo.

A life member of not only his club Mooloolaba, but also Australia, Queensland and Branch Associations and Nippers.

As an administrator he was second to none.

The reason for the airport, he was on his way to Sydney for a meeting. However he said on a phone call, “Meet me at the airport - I will go an hour earlier, we will talk and I will give you two my advice and help.”

Several years later Noosa again needed help; our March Past team had been allowed to disband.

Invited to Alexandra Headlands, who were strong in this event, we arrived and a voice welcomed us saying, “Need a bit of a hand Noosa?’’ I didn’t need to turn, I knew the voice - it was once again Boppo; also a legendary official and March Past coach.

Always there, always ready to help, small club or big - all lifesavers were his mates.

Ron gained his bronze medallion in December 1944 at Mooloolaba Beach at the age of 17. This was to be the start of an incredible 74 year career. Apart from lifesaving his competition career saw him compete in belt racing, R&R and even boats.

His employment with the Queensland Fish Board saw him transferred to the Gold Coast in 55 where he joined the Southport Club.

His dedication to coaching saw him, in 1964, win the big one the blue ribbon event, the R&R Premiership of Australia.

This is just the tip of the iceberg, for with the formation of the Nipper movement his dedication just added to the legend.

A lot of what we have achieved in Australian beach safety was also in part, due to Boppo.

So to you Ron “Boppo” Tallon, OAM, SLSA Hall of Fame and 2007 Lifesaver of the Century, our memories of your help will forever linger, your company was our pleasure; Vaya con dios, old friend, Vaya con dios.

The statistics for patrolling at Noosa/ Peregian have been released and all are very positive.

The preventative action numbers are impressive; 3686 for Noosa and 965 for Peregian.

First aid cases were 1076 at Noosa and 188 at Peregian.

Rescues were 11 at Noosa and three for Peregian.

These figures again emphasise the importance of preventive actions.

It is these that stop bad situations arising and tells us that our lifesavers have been fully alert. ●
