Queen Elizabeth II herself has vindicated what many in the region already know ... the hills communities are bursting with amazing individuals.

An incredible seven generous highachievers throughout the Yarra Ranges were included on the Queen’s Birthday honours list 2017 on Monday 12 June, with six residing within the Dandenong Ranges.

Those included on this year’s role are: Denis Cunningham (AM; Belgrave), Marilyn Rowe (OBE; Olinda), Dorothy Scott (OAM; Emerald), Geoffrey Fitzpatrick (OAM; Sassafras), Karin Orpen (OAM; Ferntree Gully), Donalea Patman (OAM; Ferny Creek) and Sandra Hills (OAM; Yering).

While the group’s achievements are many and vast, the link they share is an invaluable contribution to their community and country.

Donalea Patman OAM From her home in Ferny Creek, Donalea Patman has led an international campaign on behalf of wildlife.

In 2015, her efforts resulted in the Australian Government implementing a ban on the importation of lion trophies and body parts - the first country to do so.

Ms Patman was pleased to get support from the Federal Member for Latrobe, Jason Wood, and then thrilled when in March 2015 the Minister for Environment, Greg Hunt, announced the ban.

“It was a visionary and courageous stand on the part of the minister,” she said.

It all started for Ms Patman with a trip to Africa in 2011.

It was the first sight this passionate animal-lover had of lions in the wild - and her first introduction to ‘canned hunting’, which she explained was when the lions were essentially bred to be hunted.

“I was shocked by this practice, and then when I heard that there are fewer lions in the wild than there are rhino I was motivated to do something about it,” she said.

From Front Page Geoffrey Fitzpatrick A lifetime of service to industrial and interior design has earned Sassafras’s Geoffrey Fitzpatrick an Order of Australia Medal (OAM).

Mr Fitzpatrick said the award was totally unexpected but greatly appreciated.

“I am absolutely delighted and thrilled,” he told The Mail.

Mr Fitzpatrick has been an active member of the Design Institute of Australia for more than 40 years.

This includes over 20 years of involvement at board level and the management process.

He was the inaugural editor of the prestigious design magazine ‘Artichoke’, which he is pleased to see still in publication 17 years later.

Published by Architecture Media, this is the official magazine of the Design Institute of Australia.

Mr Fitzpatrick worked in the commercial furniture industry for many years and then moved into practising as a design management consultant, which he continues to this day.

In 2010, he became the inaugural chairman and director of Australian Design Alliance, an alliance of the major design professions in Australia.

Although he is gradually winding back some of his activities in the design industry, Mr Fitzpatrick is still very much involved in an important project at RMIT. “I’m working with RMIT’s design archives, archiving all the work of major Victorian designers across architecture and all the design disciplines. The results will be made available for research and prove a great resource,” he explained.

Professor Dorothy Scott They recognise the contributions and achievements of people from all walks of life, from Hollywood stars to humble volunteers.

And, while she may not be a Hollywood star, Professor Dorothy Scott, from Macclesfield, Victoria, has dedicated a life to those less fortunate than herself.

To recognise her incredible contribution to child welfare services in Victoria, Ms Scott, is one of a select few who was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia to recognise her ‘significant service to the community, particularly to child protection and well-being, as an advocate

for children’s rights reform, and to education’.

Upon receiving the award, Ms Scott, said she was deeply honoured, but, felt slightly embarrassed due to the people it overlooked.

“I felt very honoured but also humbled, because, in the field of child welfare there are many unsung heroes and heroines, particularly people who work at the coalface, like maternal and child health nurses,” she said.

“There are a lot of people who are volunteers and provide 24-hour support for children, year in year out ... so part of me feels a little embarrassed and awkward because the people who make the depth of that commitment don’t get the recognition that they deserve.”

Having spent a long and distinguished career in child welfare services, Ms Scott began volunteering at the age of 15 at Allambie - an Institution to which children in Victoria were taken into care - and where Ms Scott also found her passion to improve welfare services.

Since then she has been a pioneer in child welfare services and has done various studies into improving the services and also in preventing child abuse and neglect.

Ms Scott still remains very involved in child welfare services and said there was still a lot of work to be done in preventing abuse and neglect.

“The solution is not to take children from their families, the solution is to prevent children from being abused and neglected,” she said.

“If the African proverb that it takes a village to raise a child is correct then the question is what does it take to rebuild the village?”

Marilyn Rowe Marilyn Rowe has devoted her life to ballet, and from 1964 when she was one of the first students accepted into the Australian Ballet School’s inaugural two-year course until 2014 when she retired from the role of director of the Australian Ballet School, she has made many contributions to the elegant dance form.

To recognise those contributions, Marilyn, a former Order of the British Empire (OBE) awardee, has also been awarded a Member of the Order of Australia (AM).

Marilyn received the AM for her ‘significant service to the performing arts, particularly to ballet, as an artistic director, administrator, internationally acclaimed performer and competition jurist’.

In receiving the award, Marilyn said she was ‘deeply honoured.’

Marilyn was also one of the first Australians to be invited to dance with the Bolshoi, Riga and Vilnius ballet companies in Russia and had many leading roles, including Glen Tetley’s Gemini, Ronald Hynd’s The Merry Widow and Andre Prokovsky’s Anna Karenina.

Her contributions to the ballet world have been vast and distinguished and she held the position of Director of the Australian Ballet School from 1999 until 2014 and was been appointed a member of the jury for the Asian Pacific International Ballet Competition, held biennially in Tokyo.

She has also sat on juries for the Prix de Lausanne, the Youth America Grand Prix, and the Beijing International Ballet Competition.

David Cunningham The Belgrave-based educator has filled executive roles with national and international language teaching organisations.

Mr Cunningham is the recipient of an AM in 2017 and his service is not only extensive, but occurs over many years.

Among his service includes Secretary General, International Federation of Language Teacher Associations (FIPLV), 2007-’15 and 1993-’97; President from 1998 to 2006; and Honorary Counsellor since 2015.

He has also been involved with the Organising Committee for Linguapax X - Dialogue on Language Diversity, Sustainability and Peace; as well as the Scientific Committee of the World Congress on Language Policies.

He is also a member of the Editorial Board, South African Association of Language Teachers (since 1999), a patron of Modern Language Teachers’ Association of Sri Lanka (since 1995) and member of the Association of Indian Teachers of French (since 1989).

Mr Cunningham is the author of many articles and has given many presentations in English and French on language teaching, distance education, open learning, continuity, profiling, Linguapax, language rights, policy, cultural diversity, associations and French topics in 28 countries.

Karin Orpen The Ferntree Gully local is the recipient of a 2017 OAM for her service to local government and to the community of Ferntree Gully.

Ms Orpen has served Knox City Council since 1994 and has been a member of range of council committees.

She has also served as mayor on three occasions: 1999-’00, 2002-’03, 2012-’13.

Her involvements include roles with the City of Knox District Scout Group and Scouts Australia.

Ms Orpen has also been a supporter of the Upper Ferntree Gully and Ferntree Gully fire brigades since 1996.

She has been involved with the Knox Historical Society, Ferntree Gully Cemetery Trust, and Knox and District Woodworkers Association.

Briefly Birthday blitz Police were out in force over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend undertaking Operation Regal which targets speed, fatigue, distraction, failure to wear seatbelts, and drug and drink driving.

Drink driving About 12.55am on Sunday morning, Knox police intercepted a vehicle on Adele Avenue in Ferntree Gully.

The 43-year-old male driver from Ferntree Gully failed a preliminary breath test and was taken to the Knox Police Station where an evidentiary breath test was conducted.

Police allege that the result of the test was 0.206 - more than four times the legal for a full licence holder.

Further inquiries revealed that the driver was also unlicensed to drive a motor vehicle and was driving an unregistered vehicle at the time.

Family violence Overnight on 10 June, Knox police arrested a 29-year-old Dandenong North man in relation to a family violence incident at Ferntree Gully.

The alleged offender was charged and faced court, where police applied to have him remanded in custody.

Mr Wood said it was important to protect this local attraction.

“The 1000 Steps in the Dandenong Ranges have been an icon and a huge driving force for tourism since its creation in the early 1900s,” he said.

“We have seen exponential growth in the number of locals and tourists using this track, with roughly 700,000 people visiting every year.

“But, unfortunately, much of the debris created around the area comes from discarded water bottles.

“With so many people using this track each year, the amount of rubbish being left behind is becoming an issue.”

Mr Wood says the Federal Government is ensuring that local environment tourist attractions, such as this one, will be maintained and upgraded where necessary.

“We understand that the community needs these kinds of safe and serene places to foster a love of the outdoors and involvement in physical activity, while promoting tourism in the area,” Mr Wood said.

Snippets Book stall The auxiliary is holding a book stall at the Ferntree Plaza on Saturday 17 June from 10am to about 2pm. They have a great range of secondhand books, selling for $1 each or three for $2. La Trobe MP Jason Wood announced on Monday 5 June that the $50,000 plan to install new drinking fountains at the 1000 Steps will be delivered.

As part of an election commitment, the proposal aims to not only provide users of the track with clean drinking water, but also assist in reducing rubbish left at the site.

In turn, this will greatly reduce rubbish clean-up operations from Parks Victoria rangers, with an estimated 100 hours annually dedicated to cleaning rubbish

Trail will be a boon for all

By Peter Douglas Cardinia Shire Council believes the Gembrook extension to the EmeraldCockatoo multi-purpose trail will be a boon for Emerald, Gembrook and Cockatoo residents.

The project had been identified as a high priority for the community, through the recent Draft Pedestrian and Bicycle Strategy.

The aim is to offer improved, safe access to local amenities, so trail-users can walk or ride for enjoyment, or commute to work.

The Emerald to Gembrook MultiUse Trail will provide further access to important community, commercial and recreational facilities.

Council’s Manager Infrastructure

The trail extension will be a great asset for hills communities.

Services, Andrew Barr, said the benefits of this investment were many.

“The trail will create enhanced opportunities for physical activity for

young people and seniors in the hills area of Cardinia Shire, with positive implications for health and well-being,” he said.

“Providing township-links like this also helps to increase tourism and improve safety for users by separating the trail from the main roads.”

As the council recently passed its 2017-’18 budget, it was announced more than $2 million in funding had been committed to the project.

The trail will create enhanced opportunities for physical activity for young people and seniors in the hills area of Cardinia Shire, with positive implications for health and well-being.

The project will offer convenient and safe access to shops, public transport stops, schools, community facilities and open spaces.

The funds have come through a grant of $545,000 provided by the Victorian Government under its Growing

Suburbs Fund, as well as a further investment of $755,000 from Council’s Capital Works program.

This follows $1 million from the Federal Government, which was an election commitment.

The funds will complement an additional council commitment to revamp to community infrastructure over the next five years, with shire-wide commitments confirmed as $19.4 million on roads, $3.86 million in building upgrades and $2.55 million towards playing surfaces.

In addition, $1 million will be directed towards the Gembrook pavilion upgrade, as well as $525,000 for the completion of the Emerald netball pavilion and courts.

The bag that comes back is making its way out there

More than 500 bags have been handsewn and placed throughout various hills shops.

Customers are encouraged to borrow them, before returning them upon their next visit.

Upwey IGA has been one of the major supporters of the initiative and hosted the Boomerang Bag launch on Saturday 27 May. Stalls, sausages and songs were plentiful at the launch, with a ‘flashmob choir’ appearing in the aisles, along with Peggy the Platypus.

Bags’, a song written by local musician Cath Russell.

The choir comprised children and their families from Tecoma, St Thomas More, Upwey, Upwey South and The Patch primary schools.

Members of the Mountain Singers choir also participated.

Yarra Ranges Mayor, Cr Noel Cliff, and Member for Eastern Metropolitan Region, Samantha Dunn, also attended.

Also, there was the launch of Swap the Straw Dandenong Ranges, which aims to recruit every cafe and restaurant in the hills to stop using disposable straws and replace them with steel or glass straws.

Jen Ellison, from Plastic Bag Free Dandenong Ranges, hoped the community would support the Boomerang Bag initiative.

“The idea is to give people an alternative to plastic bags,” she said.

“Use our Boomerang Bags and then return them to any of the participating stores, ready for the next customer.”

Presently, there are numerous participants, including Upwey IGA, Selby General Store, Kallista General Store, Belgrave Book Barn, Hillztribes, Sushi Express and Unwrapped Pantry in Belgrave Heights.

Ms Ellison said much work had gone into creating the bags.

“Our sewing volunteers have made over 500 beautiful bags, but we are always accepting more,” she said.

“So, if you have a re-usable bag you’d like to donate, please drop it off at any of our Boomerang Bag locations.”

MCN opens a new door

By Wendy Williamson After years in the planning, last Friday 9 June saw the official opening and dedication of Monbulk Care Network’s beautiful new building.

The current minister of the Open Door Community Church, Brian Tunks, welcomed the big crowd which packed into the spacious shopfront at 61-63 Main Road.

“It has been a long journey,” he said. “All sorts of people have journeyed with us, and it has been a journey of blood, sweat and tears.”

It was a journey begun under the leadership of Mike Folland, and the community was delighted to welcome back the one-time local minister, who had travelled down from Queensland for the occasion.

Mr Folland recounted how he had come to The Patch Church of Christ in the early 1990s wanting to grow the church in the community. This led to the formation in 1995 of the Monbulk Care Network which now works with other local agencies to serve the community.

A tutoring service for struggling young people, subsidised with the help of Rotary, was an early initiative. This has since developed into parenting education classes and much more.

He paid tribute to all those people, from network management to community volunteers, who had contributed to the development of the new building, in particular church and Network treasurer Raoul Picot, and shop managers Judy Thornburn and Alison Brain.

As he cut the ribbon to officially open the building, Federal Member for Casey Tony Smith said that however hard it had been, he had never had any doubt that the community would eventually achieve its goal of getting the building it required to carry on its good work.

The not-so-great wall of Olinda

By Peter Douglas A wire fence erected inside the former Olinda Golf Course grounds is at the centre of a growing dispute between Parks Victoria and a community action group.

The Hills Common Alliance has said the construction has gone up without consultation and is not in keeping with agreements as per the Olinda Precinct Plan, which was released at the beginning of last month.

Also, the group’s members say the style of fence is “inappropriate” for the area and is an “eyesore”.

The fence divides the old course grounds with the neighbouring National Rhododendron Gardens, with work starting in recent weeks.

Hills Common Alliance member, Jenny Oxer, said the group would fight to have the fence removed.

“We have come to a crisis, resulting from the fact that a large cyclone fence has gone up in haste and without any reference to the plan and with no community consultation,” Ms Oxer said.

“It looks like a land grab, which pays no attention to the lie of the land.

“This is a stunning piece of countryside, with a lot of people coming to visit, a good 30,000 visits per annum at present, with the numbers growing rapidly, even without facilities or any formal publicity.

“Running the fence through in its present position ruins a glorious view and negates the entire community consultation process.

Marketing guru Damian Morgan will be in the Yarra Ranges next week helping businesses think smarter.

Mr Morgan will lead a series of free Mail Newspaper Group Business Excellence Seminars.

Mr Morgan says one of the biggest mistakes small businesses make is they advertise sporadically instead of making marketing a core business function.

“That has two effects: they don’t buy the right advertising because they advertise casually rather than have a commercial arrangement and secondly, the temptation is there to only ever advertise when you’re on sale - you are then telling people 'we’re cheap’ rather than ’we’re good’."

The sessions will look to encourage small businesses to realise the power of marketing, create a marketing budget at the beginning of

the financial year and commit to a 12-monthly spend.

“Corporate companies have got big budgets and engage highly qualified advertising people, whereas in small business you’re in charge of advertising, HR, inventory," Mr Morgan said.

“What we are doing is learning from the big corporates and distilling it down into a simple action plan that small businesses can take out and make worthwhile."

Mr Morgan is a former creative writer and business journalist with an MBA, and is also a regular media commentator.

He has a passion for helping small and medium-sized businesses grow.

“I am a small business owner myself,” he said.

“My great passion is helping small businesses beat corporate - we are generally better.”

Survey supports sign push

By Effie Caloutas Concerned parent Jason Fox says a recent survey shows the urgent need for electronic 40km/h signs to be installed near Kallista Primary School.

Pleas for the signs to be put in place have been ongoing over many years.

For more than 12 months, there have been calls for the Victorian Government to address the issue of many vehicles exceeding the 40km/h speed limit during school hours.

Since VicRoads last year refused to install the signs near the school, more than 200 people have signed a petition.

Mr Fox has led the push through forwarding a report to Victorian

Education Minister, James Merlino, about numerous drivers travelling at high speeds.

In April, VicRoads conducted testing on Monbulk Road outside the school, recording traffic volumes and speeds that Mr Fox says show the number of vehicles travelling at high speeds around the area.

“It clearly shows the need for electronic 40km/h signs, as it shows during school times that up to 79 per cent of vehicles travelling through this speed zone are actually speeding and doing up to 73km/h," he said.

“That is 1500 to 1600 vehicles per day speeding through the school zone.”

According to the five-day Traffic

Focus Counts Survey, recorded on Wednesday 26 April, it was found that 67.55 per cent of drivers travelled above the posted speed limit of 40km/h, which increased to 79.05 per cent as of Tuesday 2 May. It was found that a high percentage of people were going over the speed limit between 2pm and 4pm, with 55.53 per cent of drivers going over the speed limit on Thursday 27 April.

Mr Fox said he hoped the findings from the survey could be a step in the right direction.

“I don’t think that it can be any clearer on how dangerous the school zone can be. Now we have evidence to back it up,” he said.

Letters Greenie fanatics I am seriously concerned that people do not understand the meaning of ‘conservation’.

We are continuously bombarded with propaganda purported as “conservation” via greenie fanatics.

Why is it so hard to accept change and then reflect back on our heritage and support its conservation?

Every country in the world has developed since the Stone Age (don’t forget “indigenous” is even further back!); yet, “indigenous” is all that they seem to think about.

The Dandenongs and Yarra Valley have a rich heritage of immigrant settlement, which is how these unique environments were created.

Whether we agree with what’s happened in the past or not, we are all part of its creation and ‘must’ conserve its heritage; it represents who we are/have become, and it’s why people stay and visit.

Vitally, now the shire has the capability of protecting and conserving these areas properly via the new planning amendments, hopefully the subject matter of the prior letter is just the start of the shire’s conservation work going forward.

Tree tragedy I totally agree with Kevin Ide in his letter ‘All too clear’ (Mail, 6 June); I loved the sycamore maples that grew along the roadside between Monbulk and Kallista.

It was such a joy to drive past them in autumn.

The destruction of these beautiful trees is a tragedy.

Tradies on the job I was sitting and talking to a couple of friends when the subject of ‘tradies’ came up.

One lady said she had asked the man who had cut down her tree to do the stump; she paid him, but the stump is still there.

There were other tales as well.

Me, well, I don’t have bad stories about workmanship.

I have lived in Cockatoo for 29 years and had no problems.

However, what I really dislike is a tradie coming to my home, looking me in the eye and saying ‘yes’, he would do the job.

It was a small one and to not turn up, I think you should be honest and say ‘no’, you don’t want to do it.

I am not the only person this happens to.

I know, the telephone is a marvellous invention, too.

This person came highly recommended, too.

The upshot is the job is to be a bigger than first thought; needless to say we won’t be making contact.

Short weekend big on food It may be the shortest weekend of the year, but there is plenty to fit in at the progressive winter wine and food festival, The Shortest Lunch on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 June.

Melbourne’s buoyant property market is boosting the median house price of towns within commuting distance of the city.

The latest REIV data shows Greater Geelong accounted for almost half of the state’s top growth suburbs in the year to 30 March.

East Geelong experienced Victoria’s largest price growth over the year, up just shy of 30 per cent to a median house price of $575,000 - an increase of more than $100,000 on March 2016 figures.

Significant annual price growth was also recorded in Geelong West with the median house price increasing 19.1 per cent to $585,000 in March. This was up from $491,000 in March last year.

Hamlyn Heights was another top performing Geelong suburb with house prices increasing 17.6 per cent over the year to a median of $450,000.

Other Greater Geelong suburbs recording double-digit price growth over the year include St Leonards, up 15.6 per cent to a median of $445,000; Geelong, up 14.9 per cent to $701,000; Belmont, up 14.7 per cent to $460,000; and Barwon Heads, up 10.8 per cent to $908,750.

Meanwhile, Castlemaine, north west of Melbourne, recorded the highest annual growth outside of Geelong. House prices in the town increased 19.1 per cent over the year to March to a median of $452,500, up from $380,000 for the same period last year.

House prices in the commuter town of Gisborne also increased significantly over the year to a median of $691,000 - a 17.3 per cent increase on March 2016 figures.

Strong annual price growth was also recorded in Stawell with the median house price up 14.4 per cent to $210,000.

Double-digit increases were also

experienced in Warragul and nearby Drouin, up 12.2 and 11.5 per cent respectively to median house prices of $388,000 and $379,500.

Solid annual price growth was also recorded in Morwell, up 11.3 per cent to a median house price of $170,000; Kilmore, up 11.1 per cent to $368,000 and Heathcote, up 10 per cent to $292,500.

By Wendy Williamson A forthcoming exhibition at Upwey’s Burrinja Gallery is inspired by the three participating local artists’ shared love of nature and is testament to the diversity of the region’s creative community.

‘Paintbrush, Loom and Hammer: Three variations on a natural history theme’ will open Saturday 24 June, featuring the work of mosaic sculptor Jessie Yvette Journoud-Ryan, hand weaver Michele Fountain and botanical tattooist Amy Duncan.

It was friendship, the Dandenong Ranges Open Studios and this shared passion for nature that seeded the idea for this exhibition of new work by the artists. They hatched the exhibition concept during their time as Open Studios participants earlier this year and have now been working together and getting to know each other’s practices and processes for six months.

“We are all immersed in and inspired by the beauty of nature ... as artists living in the Hills, our shared love of and heightened attention to our environment is reflected in our work,” Journoud-Ryan said.

their own experience and perspective on natural history to the exhibition. They explore their ideas through their distinct practices - expressed with a paintbrush, a loom and a hammer. The exhibition is an opportunity for visitors to explore these unique interpretations of the forms that plants and flowers can take.

“It is enriching for us to draw on the similarities within our creative processes, getting to know each other, sharing ideas and working together,” Duncan said.

Warm and WHYLD this winter

By Wendy Williamson One wonderful way to warm up this winter will be to attend the WHYLD Winter Warming this Sunday, 18 June.

‘WHYLD’ brings together the residents of Woori Yallock, Hoddles Creek, Yellingbo, Launching Place and Don Valley.

Community members are invited to rug up in winter woollies, bring a stick for the bonfire and gather from 3pm to 7pm at the Wickhams Road Reserve, Launching Place.

This year’s celebration of the winter solstice will have a circus theme.

There’ll be free activities for all ages and the opportunity to marvel at a spectacular fire twirling performance by local volunteers and Fireworks Dance Company.

Warm up inside and out with hot food and drinks, including roasted chestnuts and toasted marshmallows. Grab a bargain from the Red Cross stall and then gather around the bonfire as the sun sets.

Our feast of fine films

By Derek Schlennstedt Each year around the middle of June, capacity crowds shuffle through the Warburton arts centre to enjoy a thrilling variety of internationally coveted movies and lesser-known local pearls.

This year from Friday 16 June to Sunday 18 June, the Warburton Film Festival will celebrate movies of every kind from emerging local directors in the Yarra Valley to international movies from diverse countries.

This year eight highly acclaimed contemporary feature films, including drama, comedy and documentaries from five different countries will be featured, and a special tribute will be given to the great Australian film director Paul Cox. Paul Cox was also a longtime patron of the Yarra Ranges Film Society and Warburton Film Festival Society and sadly passed away last year.

Keith Wade, president of the Yarra Ranges Film Society said that despite being ill, Paul had tried to come to last year’s showing of one of his films.

“He was a patron of the film society and he’s made some quite dramatic Australian films,” Mr Wade said.

“His last film was shown at last year’s festival and he was

“He was quite ill but was determined to come and on the Saturday afternoon we heard the news he passed away.”

The festival includes a variety of hand-picked movies and films, starting on the Friday night and going until the Sunday night.

Its not just movies though and directors from some of the films will be there to introduce their work - including one of the most dramatic films of the festival, Tanna, which is a modern day Romeo and Juliet set on a

remote Pacific island.

“The most dramatic one is on Sunday, where we have the film Tanna and one of the codirectors is coming along to introduce the film.”

“The festival and the films accommodate everyone, including movie buffs and people like you and me who are just enthusiastic about movies," Mr Wade said.

Head of steam for oil paintings

By Effie Caloutas Hills-based artist Claude Ciccone will present two oil paintings at the 2017 Camberwell Art Show next month.

The local artist, who has taught oil painting for the past 10 years, said that presenting the two paintings at the Camberwell Art Show is “a good opportunity to showcase my work”.

Ciccone has taught oil painting to a group of students at the Hut in Ferntree Gully for the past three to four years, and previously taught students at the East Ringwood School of Arts for three to four years.

He has been volunteering at the Puffing Billy Cafe in Belgrave for the past two months and said that work has inspired him to produce the paintings.

The iconic Puffing Billy locomotive inspired the hills-based artist.

“I have occasionally visited The Puffing Billy in the past but actually working there really gave me a better sense of the atmosphere and the light at dif-

ferent times of the day,” he said.

Fun beach-side romp

Though it doesn’t leave much of an impression, Baywatch is still a fun beach-side romp.

Hot-headed athlete Matt Brody (Zac Efron) is inducted into the elite Baywatch lifeguard squad. Meanwhile, the team begins investigating a drug ring operating on their beach.

Baywatch is an enjoyable diversion with some surprisingly strong character writing.

Mitch (played by the ever-dependable Dwayne Johnson), the leader of the Baywatch team, is the film’s

protagonist, but Brody is the focal point.

Brody becomes quite sympathetic as vulnerabilities emerge from his brash exterior, and he gradually learns the value of helping people and being part of a team.

The film discards the lifeguard soap-opera theme of the show for more of an offbeat crime drama feel, while also poking fun at the show’s titillating schlockiness. Unfortunately, these moods don’t mesh together well.

The investigation plotthread is swiftly-paced and

straightforward, but the humour is often forced and crass.

I’m reviewing the Baywatch film from the perspective of a non-fan who has never seen the original show.

Fans may be put off by the film’s satirical tone and flat gags.

Thankfully, the bright and summery cinematography, impressive stunts and strong chemistry among the cast compensate for the weak humour.

Unmemorable but fun and well-made, Baywatch is a decent sunny distraction from the cold Australian winter.

By Cameron Hutchison AFL YARRA RANGES Round 8 had some surprises and drought-breaking wins.

Division 1 Football saw Olinda, Monbulk and Woori Yallock get the wins they would have been expected to get.

Healesville surprised Wandin with a big win, while there was a nail-biting draw between Mount Evelyn and Upwey.

In Division 2, Yarra Glen got home after an injury halted play for 30 minutes.

Belgrave, Seville and Yarra Junction were also expected winners.

Netball saw Olinda, Monbulk and Wandin get the points but it was a bit closer for Mount Evelyn and Woori Yallock in the end.

Division 2 saw Yarra Glen and Belgrave win comfortably, while Yarra Junction was challenged and Thornton-Eildon saluted the judges for the first time since late in the 2015 season with a win over Seville.

After Wandin’s loss, they still share top spot with Olinda.

Healesville and Woori Yallock are one game behind and Upwey-Tecoma shares fifth spot with Mount Evelyn.

Yarra Glen, Seville and Belgrave share top spot in Division 2, with Alexandra and Powelltown making up the five.

In netball, Olinda hold on to top spot with Wandin only half a game behind.

The battle really is on for fourth and fifth spot.

Belgrave are one game clear in top spot in Division 2 and should hold onto that position for the rest of the year.

Yarra Junction and Yarra Glen look comfortable in second and third, but it is also a battle for fourth and fifth.

Division 1 Seniors Football Olinda Ferny Creek 17.12(114) d Emerald 10.6(66) Olinda travelled to Emerald and certainly did not have this game in their holding until the last quarter.

Olinda held a slim lead of two points at quarter time and were well held by Emerald. Olinda kicked 5.4 to 2.2 in the second to take a comfortable lead of 16 points into the main break. Emerald regrouped over the break and kicked 4.1 to 2.4 to claw back the margin to a gettable seven points at threequarter time. James Charge was on fire up forward and kicked 11 of Olinda’s final 17 goals. Olinda were impressive in the last holding Emerald goalless and piled on 7.1 to come away with a nice 48-point win.

The game started at a slow pace but Monbulk still managed to kick four goals to one to have a lead of 22 points at quarter time. Gembrook had a horror second quarter with Michael Langworthy and Shane Williams causing all kinds of trouble for them up forward and they failed to register a major in

the second, while Monbulk kicked 7.6 and the lead was now 70 points.

Gembrook got on the scoreboard in the third with 1.1 but Monbulk did not relent and they kicked 5.5 to now be in front by 98 points at the final change.

To their credit, Gembrook held Monbulk to only seven behinds in the last but the game was already run and won.

Mount Evelyn 12.14(86) drew with Upwey Tecoma 13.8(86) Mount Evelyn played host to Upwey on Saturday and it was absolutely the game to watch. Mount Evelyn got the early lead with a bit of a goal feast in the first with nine goals being kicked and a 9-point lead at quarter time.

Mount Evelyn held Upwey goalless in the second and it looked like it was going to be a win for the Mounters as they took a 22-point lead at half time.

Upwey outscored Mount Evelyn in the third, kicking 4.3 to 2.3 and the lead of 10 points was now achievable. Upwey finally got their game going in the last and kicked 5.2 to 3.4 to claw back the lead but ran out of time and had to share the points with Mount Evelyn and still share fifth spot on the ladder.

Healesville 21.9(135) d Wandin 7.14(56) Healesville shares third spot on the ladder and have inflicted the first loss for Wandin this season after a surprise win on Saturday. Wandin were undermanned but you can only beat the side that is on the park and that is just what Healesville did. They got out to an early lead by 10 points in the first and were never headed or even looked in danger of dropping the game. Holding Wandin to one goal in the second is no mean feat while they managed to slot three themselves and take a 21-point lead into the main break. Healesville came out charged in the third and piled on 7.2 to 3.5 and the lead was 42 points at three-quarter time. Healesville answered any critics in the last and totally dominated the quarter kicking 8.3 to 2.2 to show Wandin a clean pair of heels and some food for thought for the rest of the season.

It was anybody’s game but Aussie Smith and Lachlan Telford were causing problems for Alexandra with their attack and run at the footy.

The third quarter was stopped for 30 minutes due to a serious injury to an Alexandra player but recommenced with 11 minutes to play in the third and Yarra Glen had a lead of 21 points at three-quarter time. In the final, Yarra Glen kicked 5.4 to 2.4 to come away with a good win at the final siren.

Women to vie for cup

By Effie Caloutas Yarra Junction and Mount Evelyn will go head to head in the inaugural Women’s Community Bank Cup on 17 June at Yarra Junction Reserve.

The game will begin at 10am, before the senior men’s match at noon.

The marquee match is an initiative supported by the Yarra Junction District Community Bank and the Mount Evelyn Community Bank. Director of the Yarra Junction Community Bank Branch, Jess Vickers,

said it will be a great event for women’s football locally.

“The Community Cup is a great way to celebrate the operation and growth of women’s footy,” he said.

Yarra Junction and Mount Evelyn are two of nine clubs competing in the Eastern Region Girls Football League.

Mount Evelyn has been one of the stronger clubs in the competition, while Yarra Junction has shown some positive signs.

Yarra Junction Football and Netball Club committee mem-

ber, Georgia Strahan, believes it is important that everyone comes along to support the event.

“Anything that is bringing people to come along is important to all competitions, including women’s football,” she said.

“It’s important that we support women’s footy and the Community Cup, as it gives an opportunity for other young girls to participate in the near future.”

Community Bank Direc-

tor and Treasurer of the Yarra Junction Football and Netball Club, Sally Brennan, said without the support of the community banks, there wouldn’t be a women’s Community Cup match occurring.

“We’re very appreciative of the support we get from local community banks,“ she said.

“Without their support, a lot of initiatives and good ideas wouldn’t have been achieved.”

Entry is free for the Round 7 encounter between Yarra Junction and Mount Evelyn.
