By Casey Neill Following a mate into the Navy changed Gordon Murray’s life in ways he could never have imagined.

The Noble Park resident received a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List on Monday 12 June for his service to veterans and their families.

“I don’t want awards,” he said.

“My peers have put me in for that award.

“If they think I’m worthy then I’ll accept it, but I’ll accept it on behalf of the veterans down at the RSLs, (wife) Lynette and Vernon.”

Vernon is his guide dog of seven years.

Mr Murray’s nine years in the Navy started to claim his sight in the 1970s.

“I was the Indonesian confrontation and the Vietnam War,” he said.

“I patrolled the Far East on minesweepers and frigates. I was called an able seaman weapons mechanic.

“My specialty was gunner’s yeoman. I was in charge of all small arms and storing and handling of all explosives.”

He left the service in 1971.

“Come ’95 I was classified legally blind by Veterans’ Affairs,” Mr Murray said.

“It’s a blood-related thing from the services.

“It could be chemicals, they don’t know.

“I see outlines. I don’t see shadows.”

He’d been a Noble Park RSL member since 1973 and couldn’t speak highly enough of his peers, particularly now-president John Meehan, for their support as he came to terms with the diagnosis.

“That’s why I joined the committee,” he said.

That was in 1995. He became vice president the following year and president in 1999, a position he held for 13 years.

“I helped to start the welfare and pension office,” he said.

“They’re known all over Australia for the work they do.

“If anyone wants to see what mateship is, come down to Noble Park RSL on a Thursday and see what we’ve built up there.

“I’m in no official capacity now but I help out when I can.”

He said his condition didn’t tarnish his time in the Navy.

“I learned a lot about mateship,” he said.

“That’s where you learn to live, when you’re at sea with blokes for three months at a time.

“On the minesweeper there’s only 25 blokes.

“They become your mother, your father, your sister - they become your best buddies.”

cal certificate and left to become a metal spinner.

“Much to my father’s disgust I gave it up,” he said.

“I ended up becoming a junior postal officer.”

Then he signed up for the Navy.

“In the meantime I’d met Lynette at the age of 16,” he said.

“My first trip overseas for 12 months, our letters

crossed paths. We started writing in the same week.

“We got married in Noble Park in 1965.”

After finishing his service he worked in swimming pools and at Sandown Racecourse, and volunteered in lifesaving, scouts and more.

“Volunteering just came naturally to me,” he said.

“You’ve got to look after your mates.”

By Casey Neill Greater Dandenong youths will star in an original play built from their own thoughts and feelings.

Work in Progress is part of the Emerging Writers Festival, which made its first reach into Greater Dandenong last year.

Playwright Didem Caia ran writing workshops at Dandenong Library and jumped at an invitation to return as head writer on a project with theatre group SeaACT. The project had support from City of Greater Dandenong, Drum Theatre and Melbourne Playback.

“We had a six-week intensive process where for two hours once a week, all the guys would get together with me and we’d do a whole bunch of immersive writing,” Ms Caia said.

“After those writing workshops, the director would work with the language that the participants had written themselves and we’d do a bunch of improvisation and use the language in different ways.

“I was surprised at their openness.

“I thought I’d have to work a bit harder to get people talking.

“It was about empowering their voices in a space where that’s allowed and that’s welcomed, everyone was just really getting involved.”

Ms Caia took all the material generated and created a play.

“Now we’ve got this incredible script,” she said.

“It’s bilingual as well.”

As well as Arabic dialogue it features music, poetry and dance.

“It’s shaped up to be something pretty special,” she said.

tary on identity, loneliness, isolation in suburbia, finding a place in society, the strange limbo between adolescence and adulthood, and worries and anxiety about socioeconomic barriers.

“Reading about those sorts of things was really surprising to me because of the complexity of these people’s thought processes,” she said.

“That’s empowering to express that darkness.

“We’ve got a few participants who’ve experienced intense post-traumatic stress from where they’ve come from.”

They’re heavy topics.

“But I’ve really tried to work with comedy as well so there’s lightness running through it also,” she said.

The 14 to 25-year-olds will now perform their collated words.

“It was super exciting for them, especially the first time we had a round-table read,” Ms Caia said.

“Seeing themselves reflected back is really special as well.

“I’ve left their words to be their words, but I’ve shaped it and moulded it into something that has an arc.”

Walker Street Gallery and Arts Centre, corner Walker and Robinson streets, Dandenong, will host performances of Work in Progress on Wednesday 14, Thursday 15 and Friday 16 June at 7pm.

A family of four interrupted a home invader during a burglary on their Dandenong home.

Two adults, aged 35 and 33, and two children aged under 15 were inside the Seely Street address about 4.20pm on Sunday 4 June.

Four people attended in a vehicle the victim described as an older white-coloured Toyota Prado.

One, described as Middle Eastern in appearance, knocked on the front door before forcing it open.

He stole the keys to the victim’s home and vehicles, a wallet containing bank cards and an iPhone.

Wanted over death threats Kryzstof Chorazy is wanted over death threats, assaults and failing to appear in court.

Police are appealing for public help to find the 30-year-old, who’s known to frequent Noble Park, Pakenham and Boronia.

They also want to interview him in relation to criminal damage and committing serious offences while on bail.

Chorazy is described as Caucasian and 186 centimetres tall with a medium build, blond hair and blue eyes.

Life-threatening crash injuries An unidentified man is in hospital with lifethreatening injuries following a Keysborough collision.

Greater Dandenong Highway Patrol officers are appealing for witnesses to the Wednesday 7 June crash.

They believe a silver 1998 Toyota Camry sedan was travelling south on Perry Road about 7.50am when its driver took a right-hand bend and lost control.

Police said the vehicle crossed double lines and collided with the passenger side of a northbound Mercedes van.

A 42-year-old man, the sole occupant of Mercedes, was not injured.

The man driving the Toyota sustained life-threatening injuries.

Axe-wielding carjackers deliberately crashed a stolen sedan into their victim’s car in Springvale.

Police are appealing for information about the incident, which occurred about 9.40pm on Monday 5 June.

The victims, a 21-year-old Rowville man and a 25-year-old Glen Waverley woman, were in a black Holden Commodore VF with registration ABI 332 travelling on Springvale Road.

Police said a stolen red 2014 Toyota Corolla, with registration 1AT 9MT, hit the car from behind and the two vehicles pulled over into Young Street.

The victims got out of the Commodore and two men got out of the Corolla, one armed with an axe or similar weapon.

The victims handed over their keys when they were threatened and the carjackers drove off in the two cars down to Peace Street, leaving the victims stranded but uninjured.

“Lowlife” thieves have stolen a firefighting uniform, tools and gym equipment from the Keysborough Fire Brigade.

Captain Paul Townsend appealed for thieves to at least return his structure fire gear to the station, no questions asked.

“What are they going to do with it? Wear it to a fancy dress party, maybe,” he said.

His phone started ringing at 6.43am on Monday 5 June. It’s linked to the alarm system at the Chapel Road CFA station.

“It took me a couple of rings on the phone to work out what was actually going on, to be honest,” he said.

Capt Townsend lives about 300 metres away and was on-scene within minutes.

“The roller door of our garage was open,” he said.

“I saw the lock had been cut and was on the ground and straight away called the police.

“They stole hand tools, gym equipment, and my structure firefighting uniform.

“They left all the power tools.

“I think they got really spooked by the alarm going off.”

He pointed out that the CFA was a volunteerrun organisation.

Capt Townsend said insurance would replace the stolen items but “in the interim we’re without those tools”.

“My uniform could take a month to get reissued,” he said.

“They’re made to measure.

“It leaves me with one uniform and if I get that dirty at another incident, then I’m without a uniform.

“I can turn out in my wildfire gear but I can’t enter a building and that sort of stuff.”

He appealed for anyone with information to contact police or Crime Stoppers.

“There’s a lot of tradies around the area,” he said.

“They might have seen a car in the driveway or something like that.”

Capt Townsend said his uniform was in a square, red bag with a CFA logo.

“Once they realise what’s inside it, I think they’ll toss it,” he said.

He urged anyone who came across the uniform to return it to the CFA or hand it into police.

The hall was decorated by the committee and a brisk business was done by the stall holders, every article being sold, a net sum of £102/19/1.

Mrs D Houghton, president of the Federation of State Schools Mothers Clubs, says some mothers are working roaster systems to put out flags on school crossings because it is too much responsibility for children.

The Victorian Council for School organisations has asked parents to stop children supervising school crossings.

The secretary of the Victorian Teachers Union has said teachers could not be expected to supervise crossings because of their classroom commitments.

One company has eliminated its need for tipping by developing a system which converts its waste to compost.

5 years ago 11 June 2012 Awarded for the ‘honour’ of teaching Dandenong North-based principal Christine Ash is grateful for the Queen’s Birthday award.

But she said that she considers teaching school children to be a daily “honour and privilege”.

Ms Ash has been today awarded an Order of Australia Medal for her service to education.

It was in particular recognition of her stint at the helm of the Victorian Association of Catholic Primary School Principals.

She formed the association so principals could share their experience and support each other.

An educator for 40 years, Ms Ash sees technology as essential to keep schools contemporary.

She said that technology opens up “once unimaginable” possibilities of connecting students.

Deliveries took me across town The late Jack Johnson was the author of When The Clock Strikes, a fascinating account of growing up in Dandenong, his years tending to the city’s pipes and drains as a plumber and bringing up a family with wife Frances in their beloved home in Macpherson Street.

On Tuesdays I was sent by Mothers Domenic and Anthony to the produce market to pick up their week’s supply of vegies and fruit.

Most of their fruit was supplied by generous parishioners in the way of cases of apples and oranges etcetera.

Then each week after school, I think on a Wednesday, I was sent out to Leigh’s Abattoirs to pick up the week’s meat supply for the convent.

The Leigh homestead was on the corner of what today are Claredale Road and Box Street.

The abattoir was at the top end of the property, as were their pens and their primitive load-

ing ramp and sheds, all of which were reached by a track that, in those days, ran through the gums from McCrae Street bridge and up through the middle of the farm.

That track finished at Leigh’s gate opposite an unmade Claredale Road. Another track ran through grass to a second entrance to the Forest Hills Golf Club.

Just inside this entrance were a couple of tin sheds for storing horse-drawn gang mowers used to mow the fairways and also the mainte-

nance equipment. Plunkett Road was then another walking track weaving through the gums to Princes Highway.

A small track that later would become Box Street went past Leigh’s house and finished at the post and wire fence at the Dandenong Council’s gravel pits where we often played on our way out to Narre Warren and Harkaway.

To go to the abattoirs I would set off down McCrae Street with a convent basket on the handlebars of my bike, and my own gunnysack across my back.

Sometimes I arrived at the abattoirs and the council health inspector, who at the time was Mr Williams, had not arrived to do the meat inspections so I had to wait.

If I was lucky, while I waited I would get to drive the fertiliser cart around whatever paddock was being rested.

the abattoirs, helped me to harness up the huge draughthorse into the shafts of a Furphy tank they called the blood cart.

It had a wide spreader bar across the back with a large control valve.

I would catch the giant draughthorse, which often when it was in the paddock had a headstall with a fly-fringe on it.

I stood the docile creature near the banked earth loading ramp or beside the pig and sheep pens and I’d climb onto the wide ironbark top rail.

This old loading ramp was not as high as today’s ramps as it was only used for pigs and sheep, because at this time most farmers carted their own stock in small two-wheeled trailers.

There were very few large stock transports in use then, and most of the bigger bullocks were taken around the roads, along regular routes, by professional drovers and their dogs.

He said Dr Coventry would look at what, if anything, needed to be done differently in Mr Marks’ case and what could be done differently to prevent a similar situation in future.

Passengers on MH128 restrained Mr Marks shortly after the flight to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, took off from Melbourne Airport.

Police allege the catering student tried to enter the aircraft cockpit armed with what appeared to be a bomb, which was later found to be a speaker.

The flight returned to Melbourne Airport about 11.30pm. Police safely evacuated everyone on board about 90 minutes later.

On Thursday 1 June, Magistrate Suzanne Cameron remanded Mr Marks to appear at a mention hearing on 24 August.

That day Premier Daniel Andrews said there would be “a proper examination” of what led to the event, and hosed down suggestions there should be flight restrictions on people who’d received mental health treatment.

“I think we need to be very careful about not driving people away from the treatment that they need,” he said.

“We don’t want to be stigmatising any more than mental illness already is stigmatised.”

By Casey Neill Monash Health has welcomed a review into psychiatric care provided to Dandenong man Manodh Marks.

The 25-year-old Sri Lankan national is accused of threatening passengers and crew during a Malaysia Airlines flight on Wednesday 31 May. He’d left voluntary psychiatric care at Monash Medical Centre in Clayton earlier that day.

On Friday 2 June, Health Minister Martin Foley asked the state’s chief psychiatrist Dr Neil Coventry for an urgent report into Mr Marks’ treatment.

“Monash Health welcomes the decision for the chief psychiatrist to review Manodh Marks’ clinical care,” a Monash Health spokesman said.

“We have already commenced our own internal review of his case, which includes senior clinical staff and independent experts.

“We will work closely with the chief psychiatrist to conduct a thorough review of the circumstances surrounding this incident.”

Mental review

INJURED AT WORK?

A former imam has been found guilty of marrying a 14-year-old girl to a 34-year-old man at a Noble Park mosque.

Ibrahim Omerdic, 62, was the imam of the Bosnian Islamic Society and Noble Park Mosque at the time of the wedding in September last year but was later sacked, Melbourne Magistrates’ Court heard.

His licence to perform marriages has since been revoked.

Magistrate Phillip Goldberg said on Thursday that evidence showed Omerdic had used the text he normally used in a marriage ceremony and wore robes even though he knew people could not be married under the age of 18.

Omerdic claimed that he did not recognise the couple to be a true husband and wife but that they were just in love and that the marriage wasn’t formalised under Australian law.

He also said that he thought the girl was 17 although he had not seen her identification.

However, Mr Goldberg found that Omerdic didn’t issue the pair with a marriage certificate because he was concerned about being detected by the authorities.

“The evidence is compelling. The accused performed a ceremony which constitutes a marriage,” the magistrate said.

Omerdic is due to return to court for a presentence hearing on 21 June.

Childhood mischief coupled with cowardice put Tom Hartley on a path to great success.

The 80-year-old Endeavour Hills resident received a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List on Monday 12 June for service to youth through Scouts and to the community.

He was “absolutely thrilled” to receive the nod and pinpointed the moment that started it all.

Mr Hartley grew up in Leeds, England, and had a run-in with a vicar over some mischiefmaking.

The ultimatum - join the choir or the vicar would take him home to his mum.

“Being a coward, I joined the choir,” Mr Hartley said.

Through the singing group he met children that he’d seen tending a fire in a park.

They told him they were Scouts and he was welcome to join.

“I suppose it changed my life,” he said.

“I came across other people that cared, particularly my Scout master and he pushed me through to getting my Queen Scout, which opened up a new world for me.

“It taught me leadership and teamship, to be resilient, to care for other people and the will to succeed.

“I suppose Scouting taught me how to look after kids at first, and then look after and organise adults.

“That put me in good stead to run a business in the sense that you’ve got to do all the right things with volunteers or they can quickly leave you.

“If you can do it with volunteers, you can certainly do it with paid people.”

Mr Hartley’s been a Scouts Australia member since 1956, has served on national and state committees and received honours including Scouts Victoria Life Membership.

He started the 7th Doveton Scout group and helped to establish a Hallam group.

“Our two boys were both in Scouts, and we hope that our grandchildren will come through,” he said.

“I’m still involved in scouting. I’m vice president of Scouts Victoria.”

Mr Hartley arrived in Australia in 1956 as a third-year apprentice toolmaker.

He lived with his parents and two sisters in Holmesglen Hostel and then in a Housing Commission home in Doveton, and after marrying Margo lived in Springvale, Hallam and Endeavour Hills.

It was through the youth group at St James Anglican Church in Dandenong that he met Margo, who received an OAM in 2014.

“I felt a bit embarrassed when I got it before Tom,” she said.

“Tom has been involved in Scouts now for 60 years. It’s so lovely to see him recognised for all his work to the community, work, family and everything.”

They are still involved with the church and have shared a dedication to Scouts, Mercy Ships Australia, a children’s holiday program in Broome, and their Dandenong South business

Hilton Manufacturing. Hilton’s beginnings were in 1976 “in a little tin shed” after Mr Hartley was twice retrenched.

Margo said: “It was a great big family. It was never employees. We always took them as our family. That’s why that place has grown.”

Today it employs hundreds of people and is growing rapidly, and son Todd is at the helm.

The company earned an induction into the Victorian Manufacturing Hall of Fame in 2008.

In 2014 Mr Hartley joined the Victorian Manufacturing Hall of Fame Honour Roll, a nod reserved for individuals or organisations that have made an outstanding contribution to manufacturing excellence in Victoria.

Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce inducted Mr Hartley into its Hall of Fame in 2015.

“You get strength from people,” he said.

“God puts people in your path that mentor you and inspire you, support you.”

Next steps mark a milestone at reconciliation event

Let’s Take The Next Steps was the theme for the week, which ran from 27 May to 3 June, so the staircase to the public space played a key part in the ceremony on Friday 2 June.

Wurundjeri elders provided a traditional welcome and smoking ceremony at the flag-raising event.

Reconciliation Week commemorates the 1967 referendum and the Mabo decision, and this year these events reached significant milestones.

It is 50 years since the 1967 referendum and 25 years since the Mabo decision.

The referendum approved an amendment to the Australian Constitution to include Aboriginal people in the census and allow the Commonwealth to create laws for them.

The landmark High Court of Australia decision in the case of Eddie Mabo versus Queensland recognised native title in Australia for the first time.

Afghan heart’s made for stone Your pathway to a brighter future

“It’s like turning something dead into something alive.”

Afghan-born Australian Mohammed Ali Razamani has been a sculptor for more than 30 years.

“When he was introduced to stone, he fell in love with it,” his son Aref said.

That love shines through in the travertine table he created for the refugee art project Heartlands.

The stone carving is on display at Dandenong’s Walker Street Gallery and Arts Centre until Sunday 2 July and will also be shown at the Atrium at Federation Square in Melbourne in September and the Box Hill Community Arts Centre in October.

Mohammed, from Hampton Park, said a handmade wooden basket he used back in his hometown in Afghanistan inspired the piece.

It took him only 20 days to create the curved table bottom, including an intricate flower design.

He started working with stone in 1991 and later established his own company in the industrial city of Herat, Afghanistan.

“In 2014 I started to import travertine stone from Iran to Australia and started my stone decoration work here in Australia,” he said.

“I can proudly say I can make anything out of stone.

“Some of the problems that prevent me from entering the Australian stone decoration market is language and my lack of knowledge about Australian stone industry.

“I am willing to partner up with those who are in stone industry in Australia and willing to help me enter the market and provide them my stone work.”

Mohammed and his family fled Afghanistan in 2009 and arrived in Australia by boat.

“Our lives were in danger,” Aref said.

“We risked everything just to get to a safe place.”

Dandenong police put a bunny bandit behind bars after it broke into their car park.

Officers spotted the wascally wabbit peering from beneath a car at the Langhorne Street station during their morning coffee break on Monday 5 June.

Acting Senior Sergeant Kym McKenzie said the intruder hopped for freedom, with police in hot pursuit.

“We tried to coax it out with some grass and he did come out for a little nibble, but when we tried to grab him he hopped back under the cars,” she said.

After a few laps of the car park, “one of the other girls managed to nab him with some apple - he has a sweet tooth”.

Act Sen Sgt McKenzie said little Bugs appeared to be an escaped pet on the hop.

He’s now being cared for at the Lost Dogs Home in Cranbourne West.

“Corporate companies have got big budgets and engage highly qualified advertising people whereas in small business you’re in charge of advertising, HR, inventory,” Mr Morgan said.

“What we are doing is learning from the big corporates and distilling it down into a simple action plan that small businesses can take out and make worthwhile.”

Mr Morgan is a former creative writer and business journalist with an MBA, and is also a regular media commentator.

He has a passion for helping small and medium-sized businesses grow.

“I am a small business owner myself,” he said.

“My great passion is helping small businesses beat corporate - we are generally better.”

Melbourne, recorded the highest annual growth outside of Geelong. House prices in the town increased 19.1 per cent over the year to March to a median of $452,500, up from $380,000 for the same period last year.

House prices in the commuter town of Gisborne also increased significantly over the year to a median of $691,000 - a 17.3 per cent increase on March 2016 figures.

Strong annual price growth was also recorded in Stawell with the median house price up 14.4 per cent to $210,000.

Melbourne’s buoyant property market is boosting the median house price of towns within commuting distance of the city.

The latest REIV data shows Greater Geelong accounted for almost half of the state’s top growth suburbs in the year to 30 March.

East Geelong experienced Victoria’s largest price growth over the year, up just shy of 30 per cent to a median house price of $575,000 - an increase of more than $100,000 on March 2016 figures.

Significant annual price growth was also recorded in Geelong West with the median house price increasing 19.1 per cent to $585,000 in March. This was up from $491,000 in March last year.

Hamlyn Heights was another top performing Geelong suburb with house prices increasing 17.6 per cent over the year to a median of $450,000.

Other Greater Geelong suburbs recording double-digit price growth over the year include St Leonards, up 15.6 per cent to a median of $445,000; Geelong, up 14.9 per cent to $701,000; Belmont, up 14.7 per cent to $460,000; and Barwon Heads, up 10.8 per cent to $908,750.

Innovator’s future fuel A Dandenong South innovator was in the running for a state youth award.

Dale Barnett, 29, was a finalist for the Small Business Achiever Award at the Victorian Young Achiever Awards, presented on Friday 26 May. He didn’t walk away with the honour but received plenty of praise.

Mr Barnett is the co-founder and director of Biofuel Innovations, which turns waste oil into biodiesel, an environmentally friendly alternative to petroleum diesel.

He’s a chemical engineer by trade and learnt basic welding and electrical work to help with the plant’s construction.

Biofuel Innovations generates $2.4 million

revenue annually and provides a course-accredited internship program for university students.

Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said the awards showcased “the incredible talent within our community and the ways that young people are continuing to inspire others”.

“Dale is a fantastic example to the young people of Dandenong that they can make creative and valuable contributions to the community,” she said.

Awards Patron and Youth Affairs Minister Jenny Mikakos congratulated every nominee.

“You are all making a real difference to our state and it’s important that we celebrate your contribution to Victoria,” she said.

The Biofuel Innovations plant can produce

about 30,000 litres of biofuel per month, and expansions are planned. The biodiesel can be used in any diesel engine without modification as a replacement for fossil diesel.

Biofuel Innovations received a Greater Dandenong Council business grant in 2015, and last year was a nominee for a Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce Business Award.

Mr Barnett met business partner Dr Rebecca Yee through friends. They shared a commitment to sustainability that grew into their business.

“A lot of people don’t think about their waste,” Dr Yee said.

“Fish and chip shop owners have a lot of things to manage, and in many cases up to 20 litres of oil a week is just dumped.”

Career options open up as pathways expo shows the way for 1000 More than 1000 Keysborough students learnt about their study and career options at a pathways expo.

Keysborough College hosted the seventh annual event on Tuesday 30 May. Banksia Campus principal Patrick Boyd said all senior students were involved and heard from more than 70 presenters.

“The Careers and Pathways Expo is the ‘gateway’ for our students to our pathways decisionmaking process, which culminates in our senior school information evening to be held at the college in late July,” he said.

“We invite university, TAFE, other training organisations, apprenticeship providers and local businesses to provide a cross-section of possible pathways for our students to learn about and network with.

“Our students have told us that the in-school experience is by far the better way to gain career and pathways information, and many will then visit the open days of the various institutions to

SPORT Mindfull of mental health risks

By Russell Bennett Six months ago Shaun Ross took his own life. He was just 22.

The lovable larrikin who’d give the shirt off his own back to anyone in need made an unforgettable impact on anyone close to him, and thousands of people across the south-east will never be quite be the same again.

They won’t get to hear his laugh again, or see his smile, or simply confide in one of life’s good guys.

Shaun had a heart of gold, but his was a troubled life from a young age.

Yet through the darkness of his passing, there is a light - one that will shine in his honour on 16 July.

The Hampton Park Junior Football Club - the former home of a talented young Shaun - will hold its second ever Legends Game which will welcome a host of its favourite sons back to the fold.

But this year it carries much more significance, serving as a way to honour Shaun and direct the spotlight onto suicide prevention among young people.

The day will be held in partnership with Mindfull Australia, a suicide prevention charity founded by Shaun’s great friend and former clubmate at the Cora Lynn Football Netball Club Matt Runnalls.

Mindfull’s purpose is to encourage those affected by mental health battles to come out of the shadows of stigma through self-acceptance and education of the wider community.

At the time he founded Mindfull, Matt was a 24-year-old tradie who played country footy.

He had no real financial worries, his professional life was in order, and he had a strong network of family and friends. But since he was 17 he

Up until late last year, Shaun was a constant source of inspiration to Matt through his journey with Mindfull.

“I don’t think anyone ever really got the destined talent out of him that we all knew he had,” Matt said.

“It’s not just a cliche that people say when someone passes - he literally would give you the shirt off his back.

“Even when he was struggling, his attitude to fighting his mental illness and his demons is something that still drives me.”

Young gun Newman, who also represented Victoria at Under-19 level last season, took great strides, scoring 197 runs at 28.1, including a 71 not out against eventual premiers Fitzroy-Doncaster.

After the Bushrangers made history last season by becoming the first Victorian side ever to win three Sheffield Shield titles in a row, Victorian Chairman of Selectors Andrew Lynch is placing one eye on the future to keep Victoria at the forefront of Australian domestic cricket.

“The side we’ve picked for the winter training program this year is much younger than we’ve previously had, which is a big part of our strategy going forward,” Lynch said.

“We’re looking to bring these talented young players through our system, which we have a lot of faith in and has proven to be successful in the past, and prepare them as best we can for future possibilities at first-class level.”

The squad will train together at the MCG throughout winter under the tutelage of Victoria’s high performance coaches, including David Hussey and Mick Lewis.

Coaching the side for his second season, Hussey has a clear structure in mind to keep the squad busy over the winter and prepared for the season ahead.

“It’s great to be able to bring the squad together during the winter, which gives us plenty of time to work on developing their skills and techniques for both batting and bowling,” Hussey said.

“We’ll hit the ground running towards the end of June and it’ll be good to finally get back into the swing of things.”

Players will complete numerous sessions between June and September, which will be a combination of skills, strength and conditioning, and performance management sessions.

The program commences on Thursday 22 June.

particularly telling moment at Shaun’s funeral in November.

“His parents noticed a change in him when he was 10,” he said.

“I’ve got an 11-year-old son, and that really hit home with me - to think that he might be struggling and I may not know about it.”

So, the Redbacks and Mindfull have joined forces in an effort to shine a light on the mental health battles facing so many youngsters in each and every local community.

On 16 July at the Cairns Road Reserve, former Hampton Park players and a whole host of people close to Shaun will don a special Redbacks jumper featuring his initials and the number 15 - his number in his days in the red and black.

After the game there’ll be a sit-down dinner and a presentation from Matt on suicide awareness.

There’ll also be one other feature on the day - a balloon release, to remember all those in the community lost to suicide.

“I think it’d be a real eye-opener to see just how many balloons do get released,” Matt said.

“It’s pretty rare to walk anywhere these days and start the conversation and talk to anyone who hasn’t felt the loss of a friend, or who doesn’t know someone who’s struggling or living with a mental illness.”

Tickets to the dinner are limited, while entry to the legends game will be a gold coin donation, or $5 per car with all proceeds going to Mindfull.

Clubs left on a sticky wicket It may well and truly be the middle of the football and soccer season, but the news out of the Dandenong District Cricket Association keeps on coming.

With the boom signings of Steven Spoljaric to Springvale South and Matt Chasemore to Berwick raising the eyebrows of many, there have been many other player movements that have strengthened some clubs and weakened others.

North Dandenong is currently in the process of searching for a new captain after the departure of star all-rounder Jurgen Andersen (Buckley Ridges), and is believed to be in the market for a few players that could help fill the void left by the Kiwi.

Dingley has bolstered its playing stocks for 2017/18, signing on Hallam batsman Corey Booth as captain and former oneTest Sri Lankan spinner Dinuka Hettiarachchi.

Booth, a former Dandenong player back in the early 2000s, scored 310 runs last season at an incredible average of 103.3 - the Turf 1’s highest average.

It’s all positive news out of Dandenong West which has pulled off a brilliant recruiting coup, securing former Premier Cricket star Shanuka Dissanyaka as captain/coach.

Dissanyaka played just one season at Footscray but scored an extraordinary 175 not out in the 2013/14 grand final against Essendon at Junction Oval.

Former Victorian paceman Will Carr will coach Berwick in a non-playing capacity as it looks to get back into the premiership race next season.

Carr, 41, played six matches for Victoria, taking 25 wickets at 20.88.

Nelly’s dream still alive after Magpies selection

By Nick Creely Never give up on your dreams, because the moment you do, you give up on yourself.

This sentiment embodies everything that Rowville Football Club’s Nelly Yoa stands for.

He is a former soccer star who despite enduring a devastating and life altering situation, has risen up in the face of adversity to firmly set himself into the sights of AFL club Collingwood.

In 2011, after attending a beauty pageant in Braybrook with some close mates, Nelly, one of the most sought after young soccer players in the country, was savagely attacked by a group of men with machetes after trying to defend one of his friends - sustaining life-threatening injuries.

The Journal has closely followed Nelly’s journey from the time he was attacked to his remarkable recovery.

“The doctor informed me at the start that I had a 1 per cent survival rate of even being alive and the chances of playing sport - let alone walking again - were very minimal,” he said.

“It was truly heartbreaking - once you’ve been told that you just don’t know what to do - I felt lost.”

But true to himself, he overcame the voices in his head telling him he couldn’t, and he not only walked, but ran towards a dream. “‘Whatever doesn’t kill you makes you stronger’ is what I’ve lived by, I guess, and that saying played a massive part for me - I use that saying to motivate others now - there is always a light at the end of the tunnel,” he said.

“I had a lot of friends for support - some of my friends were competing for the Paralympics - the chances of them being successful was obviously hard because of their disability, but they pushed through and they inspire me - I realized I had all the ability to come back again, but disability is permanent and I had a great opportunity,” he said.

Trying to find direction in his life, Nelly turned to many people for support to find the answer, with a legendary mentor helping him find direction and steering him into the right path.

“Usain Bolt is one of my mentors - he is someone who has encouraged me to never give up and follow my dreams - he has played a massive role for me and he has been a great friend,” he said.

“He is someone who I can call up when I need something or need a word of encouragement - he certainly helped in many ways.”

Then last year, Nelly decided to switch codes on the advice of another high profile figure, electing to try out Aussie Rules after spending his entire childhood and early adulthood life plying his trade with the round ball.

“I was approached by Eddie McGuire (Collingwood President) a few years back - I’ve been on his radio program a few times on Triple M, and he sort of convinced me.

“He said if I ever considered playing AFL, they would have a look at me at Collingwood. He was very persistent and eventually I thought about it and did some training,” he said.

“Collingwood definitely have me on their radar now after just missing out, and they recommended I play for Rowville in the Eastern Footy

League, which is a strong league just under the VFL. “They asked me to go down there - they have a great set-up who have produced a lot of AFL players.

“I’ve now moved there to play football. I was asked to move there by Collingwood for the next 10 games until the season concludes and then,

hopefully, be in the frame for November’s AFL draft - I want to be on the main list for next year’s campaign.”

Nelly is eligible to be taken by Collingwood in 2018 as Category B Rookie as a migrant rookie after just missing out last year, meaning he won’t need to go through the draft to land at the Pies.

Testing times for Doveton

By David Nagel Doveton’s ability to seriously challenge for this year’s South East Football Netball League title will be put to the test this week with a visit to Narre Warren.

Currently fourth and fifth on the ladder, at least one of these two was expected to improve to the point where it could seriously challenge the grand finalist of the last two years, Berwick and Cranbourne.

The Doves, who went on a serious recruiting campaign in the off-season, looked a serious threat after knocking off thirdplaced Beaconsfield in round six, but subsequent losses to Berwick and Tooradin has slipped it back in among the pack.

The Doves were injury ravaged against the Seagulls, but will still be massively disappointed that they couldn’t take a firm hold on that top-three position.

This week’s game, well it’s probably the most important between these two since they met in consecutive grand finals in 2005 and ’06.

Apart from 2009, when the Doves played off in the grand final against Pakenham, Narre Warren has been the better team.

It won nine in a row against the Doves from 2010 through to 2015, before the Doves started a fightback.

They’ve won their last three against the Magpies - but haven’t been able to convert that advantage into a higher ladder position at the end of the season.

This is a new-look Doveton side.

Youngsters Jake Blackwood, Josh Bradley, Sam Muirhead and Malis Lokeron have really provided a spark - Blackwood particularly impressive at centre half back - while regular faces like Ryan Hendy and Michael Henry have had consistent seasons to date.

Dual league best and fairest winner Russ Gabriel has had a great season in the ruck, while nippy types like Nick Battle, Clayton McCartney and Kyle Hendy have produced some stunning football at times.

The Doves just need to get more consistent.

At their best, they should get the points against the Magpies.

Meanwhile Hampton Park has had a rare occurrence of good news, with SEFNL’s governing body AFL South East releasing its draft recommendations from its Senior Football Competition Review.

AFLSE, which governs 31 clubs across three competitions, SEFNL, Nepean and Peninsula, will introduce divisional football in 2018, with the composition still to be decided.

What it does for the Redbacks is give them high hopes of being more competitive after winning just four games since the start of 2012.

They haven’t been able to compete with growing towns like Beaconsfield, Berwick, Cranbourne and Narre Warren and have had a massive voice in the push for divisional football.

The new divisional set up will see promotion and relegation across three divisions.

The final composition is set to be announced by the end of July.

Clubs look to youth and experience for roster rejig

By Nick Creely The NPL Transfer mid-season deadline is officially over, with the three major Dandenong based clubs Dandenong Thunder, Dandenong City and Springvale White Eagles making some hefty changes to their roster for the remainder of 2017.

Thunder and City are jostling for promotion into the top tier of Victorian football and the two clubs have added a nice blend of youth and experience.

The Thunder has made perhaps the biggest acquisition of them all, with returning midfielder Iqi Jawadi signing on at George Andrews Reserve.

Jawadi, 23, played 36 matches for the Thunder from 2012 to 2013, before joining South Melbourne where he went on to play 79 matches and kick six goals from 2013 to 2016, winning two championships and a best and fairest.

He has since played a handful of matches for Oakleigh Cannons in 2017 but now adds another

dimension to the powerful Thunder side.

Following on from Jawadi, the Thunder has also added Jordan Seeto to its roster, a 24-year-old defender who moved to Victoria in 2015 and has been involved in college football in the US. Originally from Bendigo City before joining Richmond, he made 25 senior appearances and was a part of the 2015 NPL2 Championship and promotion.

He then departed mid-way through last year and joined Moreland City, playing 25 matches in an impressive season.

Dandenong City, the top of the class in NPL2 East in 2017, has also been fairly busy throughout the transfer period, bringing in former junior Damien Miskulin.

After making his debut with City in 2013, Miskulin was snared by Melbourne Victory where he played 29 games, netting three goals in a stint from 2015 to 2016, before joining Melbourne Knights in mid-2016.

But souring the signing of Miskulin is the departure of reliable defender Luke Burgess who has signed with Whittlesea, bolstering its defensive four.

The 23-year-old, who has been impressive in his 24 games with City across a season and a half, will join Epping Stadium in a big change of environment.

Springvale White Eagles has also pulled off an impressive mid-season transfer coup, signing up Nate Foster from the Oakleigh Cannons.

Originally from Dandenong Thunder, the 27-year-old failed to fire with the Cannons, but now has another chance to resurrect his career.

At his damaging best, Foster is a notable goal scorer, as shown by his 13 goals in 23 games with the Thunder, but he has been hampered by form and injury since leaving George Andrews Reserve.

Coincidentally Foster made his debut for the Eagles in last Saturday’s blockbuster derby clash against Dandenong Thunder.

In the heat of natural leadership

By Nick Creely The Under-18 National Championships provide Oscar Clavarino with a unique opportunity.

Not only will the star young backman ply his trade in front of AFL recruiters as the most sought after key defender in this year’s draft, but he will also co-captain the Vic Country side in another chapter of his impressive development as a l eader.

He has a natural born leader of men, and a young man who thrives with responsibility.

“To be recognised in the football region of Vic Country as a leader is really special - it’s an absolutely honour,” he told Star News Group.

As a member of Vic Country as a bottom-ager in last year’s National Champs, Clavarino said the lessons learnt will hold him in good stead this time around.

“The biggest thing I learnt from last year is simply how ruthless and switched on you have to be at that level,” he said.

“The fast ball movement and elite skills makes it especially hard as a backman but at the same time it’s a great challenge and I can’t wait to be a part of it all again.”

His development as a leader continues to evolve - he has been described by many recruiters and team-mates in the last few years as a potential AFL captain in the next decade, and someone who will fight tooth and nail to get his team over the line.

“I feel as though I’ve gained so much experience in the way I lead,” he said.

“It’s the best way to learn and develop, to be right in the heat of it.

“I’ve probably made a couple of mistakes but nothing major but, more importantly, I’ve learnt from it and continued to develop.

“Of course there’s still a long way to go but I love the direction I’m heading with my leadership.

“Working with ex-St Kilda captain, a 300game player and now a leadership mentor in Nathan Burke is a great way to learn as well.

He anticipates a strong carnival for Vic Country, with a number of prospective first rounds picks set to shine - and he simply can’t wait to get stuck in.

“This year’s squad looks really strong in my opinion,” he said.

“With the likes of James Worpel (fellow cocaptain), Hunter Clark and Luke Davies-Uniacke running through the midfield, we will be a very strong force.

“Having said that, the other teams also look quite strong on paper so I think it will be how well we can bond together and work as a team that will

define our success and I reckon we’ve got that in us, it’s just something that the Vic Country boys can traditionally do.”

Clavarino’s Country side kicked off its under-18 games against the Allies in Blacktown, NSW, on 11 June, and return for three matches in Victoria.

Eighteen-year-old Chloe Bibby was part of the Dandenong Rangers’ grand final team last season - now she’s set to represent Australia.

Following a final selection camp at Basketball Australia’s Centre of Excellence (CoE), the Australian Gems have named their team of 12 to compete for the FIBA Under-19 World Cup from 22 to 30 July.

Six Victorians are included from that team in Monique Conti, Jazmin Shelley, Maddison Rocci, Kiera Rowe, Bibby and Ezi Magbegor.

They are joined by Abby Cubillo (Northern Territory), Samantha Simons (South Australia), Lara McSpadden (New South Wales) and Zitina Aokuso (Queensland) while WNBL player Anneli Maley (Victoria) and CoE scholarship holder Rebecca Pizzey (Victoria) round out the team.

Dee Butler will lead the Gems at the World Cup, replacing Paul Goriss who has recently been named as the Australian Opals assistant coach.

“Selection was not easy with the quality of the squad but we are really excited about the depth and versatility of the team,” Butler said.

The Gems have been drawn into Group D for

the tournament and will be aiming to get on the podium for the third straight time after winning bronze medals in 2015 and 2013 while they were also silver medallists in 1997 and gold medallists in 1993.

“We know that we will face strong opposition with a number of the European teams and Japan and Korea as always will be highly skilled and extremely quick,” Butler said.

Bibby, who is set to head overseas to play college ball with Mississippi State in the US, is one of the rising stars of basketball in Australia and was highly impressive in the WNBL finals series with the Rangers.
