I spent a couple of hours on Sunday with some genuine, down to earth people at Johns Landing whose lives have been turned upside down.

Over varying numbers of years the campsite residents have lived an idyllic life amid native bushland on the banks of the Noosa river.

They are visited by a variety of wildlife including a large male kangaroo they call Bruce and a white egret, Chris, who often shares their catch because “it can’t look after itself ”.

Looking out for one another has become their way of life.

It is no-one’s fault they have to leave and they don’t blame anyone.

Pat and Ben Johns have provided lowcost campsites on their property for many years but want to retire.

The campsite has powered and unpowered sites, amenity blocks and a store for supplies. Some residents have solar panels.

Government-funded community organisations are trying to find them accommodation elsewhere.

No-one wants to go, not even the Johnses - and who will look after Chris?

SHOW A LITTLE CARE FOR KOALAS As their habitat diminishes koalas are residing more often on privatelyowned properties and needing to meet the challenges that come with human habitation.

Car hits, dog attacks, disease and tackling fences are major obstacles to koalas’ survival - but the Koala Action Group is teaching people how to assist them.

Group co-ordinator Michelle Daly is inviting Imbil and Mary Valley to come and share their knowledge and experiences of local koala populations at a meeting at Imbil RSL Hall, in Main Street, on Sunday 18 June, from 9.30am.

“Most koalas live in habitat that is found on private land, so our actions are a key to their future. The more we learn and understand the complex world of wild koalas, how they live and breed and how they use the landscape, the better we can help them,” she said.

The meeting will feature

presentations from Wildcare, Wildlife Rescue and the Sunshine Coast University’s Detection Dogs for Conservation research team.

Michelle said guests could learn about threats to koalas, how to determine if a koala is sick or injured and who to call for help, as well as how koalas live and breed and how they use the landscape. Even collecting koala scats (poo) can help researchers understand koala health and distribution of the species, she said.

The Imbil meeting follows on from the Koala Action Group’s first regional meeting in Widgee, which attracted around 30 local residents who have now formed their own local koala group and are working together to protect koalas and their habitat in the Widgee region.

NO POWER FOR BUSES Both Noosa Council and TransLink say they will continue working “to investigate innovative transport technologies” following the cancellation of the Noosa electric bus trial last week. Mayor Tony Wellington said the project was halted because the supplier had been unable to meet “contractual target dates”.

But he expected smaller, electric shuttle buses were likely to be part of the answer to our congestion problems.

Noosa Chocolate Factory has been fined $12,200 (plus costs) after they were found to be charging customers for the weight of packaging as well as contents at their Brisbane stores.

Tobias Qld Pty Ltd, trading as Noosa Chocolate Factory, pleaded guilty to multiple offences under trade measurement law.

The fine was ordered by the Maroochydore Magistrates Court in proceedings brought by the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions on behalf of the National Measurement Institute (NMI).

The court was told that on three occasions in 2015 NMI trade measurement inspectors made trial purchases at Noosa Chocolate Factory stores, at Mt Gravatt on 27 May and at Queen Street Mall in Brisbane on 24 August and 16 December. Each time the weight of the packaging was included when the product was weighed and priced for sale, contrary to section 18KC(2) of the National Measurement Act 1960.

On 16 December 2015 NMI inspectors at the Queen Street Mall store also identified products packed in advance that did not include a weight statement on the label, contrary to section 18JA(2) of the National Measurement Act 1960.

National Measurement Institute General Manager Legal Metrology, Bill Loizides, said that the prosecution was launched because of an alleged history of non-compliance involving more than one store.

“The law is clear, customers should get what they are paying for,” he said.

“Normally offences of this nature design work and staff time” of council’s overall $500,000 commitment to the trial.

A TransLink spokesman said they had contributed $34,841 towards procurement, supplies and evaluation of the Noosa Council-led project.

As reported in Noosa Today (17 May, 2016) the preferred tender came from Chinese company Higer Bus and Coach which proposed a six-month lease cost of $131,200. At the time the cheaper cost was a factor in awarding the winning tender.

Cr Wellington told ABC radio on Monday: “The shame of it is there was no Australian business set up to manufacture electric buses at the time we went out for tender.”

A second tender under consideration had come from Bustech Pty Ltd, a Queensland bus construction company based in Burleigh on the Gold Coast that boasts on its website of successfully launching Australia’s first electric bus in 2015.

bout 90 per cent of Wilvos’ injured wildlife arrives due to the behaviour of people - whether it’s as a result of a car strike, dog or cat attack, barbed wire or a bird flying into a window.

Monday 5 June was World Environment Day and to mark the occasion, Noosa Today spoke to one of the Sunshine Coast’s foremost wildlife rescuers.

As a girl in primary school Sylvia Whiting wanted to be a vet. Now, after caring for wildlife for 30 years, vets often take the advice of the Wilvos president.

The Wildlife Volunteers Association, or Wilvos as it was dubbed was set up 30 years ago by the then Department of National Parks and Wildlife, initially to operate a helpline for people who found sick and injured wildlife after hours.

About 30 people joined up to answer phone inquiries and they were given a book with information on caring for the animals. A few years later the department became too busy to answer the daytime inquiries and it was handed to Wilvos 24 hours a day.

Sylvia said it was a tough road for the volunteers for a long time, with little equipment or money.

But when she was awarded a Pride of Australia Medal followed in 2011 by an Order of Australia Medal for her dedication to conservation “it was good for Wilvos”.

A “substantial donation” given by an anonymous donor, some grants and government funding have enabled them to provide training and equipment, such as nest boxes, to members and education in schools.

The organisation is now run by an elected committee with Sylvia as its president and has about 300 members including about 130 carers.

Based in the Sunshine Coast, it covers an area of about 6000 square kilometres from Gympie in the north to the northern Brisbane suburbs and west to Imbil and Kilcoy.

In any year the hotline which is manned by volunteers on a roster system can receive 10,000 calls.

“Not every call is for animal services, some just want to know information,” Sylvia said.

“It costs about $25,000 a year to run,” she said and a portion of that money is used to bring in animal experts who deliver workshops to members.

Sylvia, who takes in about 400 animals a year, has her daily life dictated by the feeding times of her wards.

“At the moment I have six macropods. They have fourhourly feeds throughout the night. There are possums on formula feeds and birds are short-term, they come and go,” she said.

Wilvos acts as an indicator of the broader wildlife population and over the years they have witnessed development expand while wildlife and natural habitat decline.

Birds such as the scaly-breasted lorikeets are rarely seen now where once they flew in flocks as large as the more common lorikeet and the phascogale, a carnivorous possum, quolls and gliders are no longer commonly seen.

Sylvia said people sometimes phoned very excited to have found a bilby, but they always turned out to be bandicoots.

She says she’s always amused at the denial of pet owners who ring when their dog or cat has brought in a bird.

“About three months ago a woman rang to say her cat had brought in a rosella,” she said. ‘She didn’t hurt it’ the

Sylvia says when people assume their pet has done no damage to a bird and put in back in the bush, that bird will die.

“Just the saliva from a cat is enough to kill them. It is full of bacteria and when they clean themselves they ingest

it. We always wash them and give them antibiotics. Dogs shake them and that causes internal damage. Sometimes they’re very traumatised.

“We make them warm and give them pain relief.

Everything feels pain. And we give them a go.”

The organisation runs regular induction sessions to enlist the help of more volunteers.

Bob, in some tricky situations.

Once she had a call about an injured kangaroo. When they arrived they found a mob of kangaroos with a very protective male. A female that had been hit by a car had made it to a paddock close to the road and had died, but its joey was injured and needed help.

“The male was grabbing her to get her up,” she said.

The Wilvos hotline runs 24 hours every day of the year.

“It’s surprising how protective they are and how hard they work to get their mate up.

“We drove the car out there between mum and dad.

I jumped out and grabbed the joey. The little thing had a badly fractured leg. I said quickly get in the car. Here comes the male. He was roaring at us. He would have had us.”

Sylvia said the protective nature of wildlife regularly caused their demise, particularly when birds hit by cars were left on the road.

“If a bird’s dead on the road its mate will keep swooping at it to try and get it off,” she said. “They often get squished as well. It’s really sad. These things have feelings.”

Despite her thousands of wards over many years there are two breeds that stand out - the greater glider and phascogale.

She was delighted when a baby phascogale came into her care.

“A Yandina vet had this tiny creature. She called me and said would you like to give it a go.

“I said could you give it some fluids. It survived. It was so cute. As it got bigger it was so fast. I had to catch moths to feed it. It would zap around the cage to catch them.”

The greater glider still eludes her.

NEWS COUNCILLOR FACES COURT Noosa Councillor Frank Pardon appeared briefly in Noosa Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday morning on six charges of indecent treatment of children under 16.

The case was put back until 4 July and the magistrate ordered bail be enlarged.

Cr Pardon said outside court he would be fighting the charges. ●

NEW DOG BREEDER REGISTER Queensland’s new Dog Breeder Register will require every puppy born - apart from some exempt working dogs - to have a supply number before it is sold or given away.

Acting Agriculture Minister, Dr Anthony Lynham, said the register would help locate those who profit from cruel dog-breeding factories.

Over time the register will enable the authorities to trace breeders, inspect properties and ensure conditions meet acceptable animal welfare standards.

To register, regular and occasional breeders will need to log their details on the new Queensland Dog Breeder Register within 28 days of their puppies being born.

Compliance with the new laws will involve a partnership between local councils, Biosecurity Queensland and the RSPCA Queensland. ●

The hotel and Lion have partnered to again brew the much-missed Eumundi beer.

Lion Brewmaster Chuck Hahn said the partnership would revive a much-loved local craft beer.

Eumundi head brewer Chris Sheehan said the tanks, which hold up to 2400 litres, would now begin to be assembled.

“The weeks ahead will see us piecing it all together, like a giant Meccano set,” he said.

CLEAN SLATE FOR NEW BOARD Dick Barnes chaired his first meeting of the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation (NBRF) this week, with the aim to bring a “different team spirit” to the board which, he said, “everyone was happy with”.

Mr Barnes said after years of ill feelings towards the NBRF across the community, the new team wanted to begin the healing process.

He said the tenure review was on the agenda as the NBRF had until the end of the year to renew its status with UNESCO. “We have an advisory group together and they are working on it,” he said.

Mr Barnes said the tenure report would show what had been done over the past 10 years since the NBRF’s inception and would form the basis for planning the next 10 years.

“There’s been people who have done good work and we want to get these people on board,” he said.

Mr Barnes said new aims of NBRF included improved governance, communicating better with the community, increasing awareness of the NBRF and getting people to live sustainably in the environment.

Noosa Council is calling for expressions of interest from businesspeople keen to take part in a new Innovation Master Class led by International businessman and innovation expert Colin Graham of Causeway Innovation.

United Synergies, a local not-for-profit organisation that works vulnerable people facing issues, including affordable housing and homelessness, is the recipient of a generous donation of $5000 from the Noosa Heads Rotary Club and the Tewantin Noosa Lions Club.

Jo Dillon is a busy Noosa woman who juggles her roles as marketing manager for Palm Lakes and Noosa Blue Resorts with home life.

I hear you are a busy woman! What does an average day look like in your world, Jo? I do the marketing for Noosa Blue and Noosa Lakes resorts so often I am there showing off the property. Looking out over Laguna Bay or the hinterland can be hard to take. Or meeting in Noosa Blues Puzzles Cafe or over at the Marina at Cafe Vin Cinos with various business people that will help sell Noosa.

How do you power through each day?

Berocca! And coffee helps a lot.

Do you get time to keep fit and healthy?

I love walking the river morning and or night. You never know who you’ll run into.

What’s a great quick and easy meal you whip up after a busy day?

Boeuf bourguignon would probably be my signature dish. Might have something to do with the red wine ... once its opened.

What do you love most about living/ working in Noosa?

Walking the National Park, kayaking around the river, driving up the North Shore, boogie boarding on Main Beach can’t beat it.

Do you have a dream travel destination and why?

I would love to do the “Year in Provence” and try living in another country in a little village for a time. I think it would probably be somewhere in Greece.

What are you passionate about?

Noosa, of course! And I have always been passionate about women making the most of themselves. Comes from growing up in a time when women were still expected to marry and look after the family - my Dad wouldn’t let me go to university because he thought it would be a waste of time. So I was working at 15 and over the course of my career often came across the glass ceiling. I think my girls have it so much better. I have always said to them you can be anything you want to be. We still probably need to push for the equal pay in some fields but that’s another story.

“We can’t keep going the way it is,” Ian said. “We have to let it go. Easter and Christmas are good times. If it was like that all the time it’d be good.”

Pat and Ben want to retire but don’t really want to leave the quiet and picturesque property or the friends they have made there.

No-one will miss the property more than Ben, who has called it home his entire life.

“Age is the problem,” Ben said. “Time gets away.”

For many years Pat and Ben Johns have provided campsites at Johns Landing for people wanting affordable holidays and those with nowhere else to go.

Last month Noosa Council announced they were negotiating to buy the property for environmental habitat that could later become recreational land.

When council approached the couple to buy the 49-hectare property which borders Noosa River, Ben said it gave him “an option he didn’t know (he) had.”

“The council initiated the idea. They wanted to buy the place. I didn’t know what I was going to do,” he said.

None of the long-term residents Noosa Today spoke to this week want to leave and most have no place to go, but all understood the Johnses’ situation and had nothing but praise for them.

Emma McCrone has lived at the Johns Landing campsite on and off for the past 12 months.

“If it wasn’t for Ben and Pat letting us stay, we’d be homeless,” she said.

“We do understand they want to retire. We’re grateful for being here. Everyone is pretty sad it’s going to go.”

She has put her name down for social housing and hopes something turns up, but doesn’t expect it be in the expensive Noosa area. ●

BY MARGARET MACCOLL When Noosa Today visited Johns Landing, a group of residents were gathering in the afternoon to share food and play darts. “No-one goes hungry here. We look after each other,� Warren (Was) Riuhi said.

Was stopped work three or four years ago for medical reasons and has lived at his Johns Landing campsite by the river ever since.

He and fellow campers live mainly “off the river� on a seafood-rich diet. Was doesn’t know “where he’ll go or what he’ll do� and having a dog, Gypsy, makes finding a rental he could afford more difficult. He will miss above all the friendship. “I’ll be dragged away and shoved in a unit. It won’t be the same,� he said. “A couple have moved out to a unit and are sitting around wondering what to do. “I don’t blame the (Johns) wanting to retire. They’ve put people up for a long time.�

Snow Royle has lived six or seven years at Johns Landing. He prides himself on never collecting the dole and has always earned a quid as “a jack of all trades� but with no formal qualifications finds it difficult to gain a job.

Snow is philosophical about his future. “I’ll just hitch up my van and head north,� he said. “Life’s a challenge. I’ll just go with the flow.�

John, who is unable to work because of an injury, thinks there should be more places like Johns Landing for the growing numbers of grey nomads. “This place is a joy. You’ve got lovely people around to have a chat with every day,� he said.

John’s search of local rents has shown him there’s nothing he can afford in Noosa.

ROTARY TO CALL COTTAGE HOME Noosa Heads Rotary Club has found a new home at Tait-Duke Community Cottage.

The Rotary club this week signed a lease for the council property, which it will manage and make available to other local groups and agencies.

It comes ahead of TaitDuke Community Cottage’s official opening next week.

Rotary club president Jim Bennett said the organisation would use the cottage, on Earl Street at Tewantin, as a base for its community work.

“We are looking to provide more support for a range of local issues, and currently we’re in talks with United Synergies, Orange Sky Laundry and other agencies as to how we may be able to help out,” Mr Bennett said.

The Rotary club was one of several organisations involved in the cottage restoration project.

Noosa Heads Rotary will move into Tait-Duke Community Cottage once

Noosa District State High School Year 10 students investigated the demise of Noosa Junction as part of their unit on urban planning this term.

Students developed a re-design of the area to re-invigorate the precinct and sold their idea to their peers with insights provided by guest speakers, a field trip to the site and guidance from the University of the Sunshine Coast’s Associate Professor Jo Rosier. ●

GOD BLESS THE SALVOS FOR THEIR LOVE It was at the ripe old age of nine years, while living in Gympie, that I first really became aware of an organisation known as the Salvation Army.

Prior to this I had on occasion heard my father and some of his old Digger mates, veterans of the New Guinea campaign, refer to them in passing.

But then to me it was just a name.

However in the early hours of 18 October 1947 an incident occurred that made me stop listen and learn.

The incident was the Tamaree Rail Disaster.

At the small railroad siding of Tamaree, some 11 kilometres north of Gympie, two trains had collided head on leaving eight people dead and 20 badly injured.

With Gympie being the closest town, the response for assistance was immediate; doctors, ambos, town people, local farmers - and also amongst the volunteers, members of the Salvation Army.

Their contribution to the rescue effort became legendary throughout our small community.

Then in the early 1960s, my knowledge became more personal when a family member was stricken with a then relatively unknown virus, now known as multiple sclerosis.

The time and support given by the Salvos to our strict Irish family, imbedded in me the utmost respect.

So it is that I take the opportunity to help bring to those who may not be fully aware of the outstanding contribution that this Army makes, some facts figures and incidents.

Regarding fund-raising, an appeals committee under Chairman John Madill, has continued a foundation that results show is second to none.

The Surf Club at Noosa first became involved when club manager Anton Mogg, following discussions with Rob Pertot, threw the doors open and hosted a Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal breakfast in 2011.

Since then Lakes Convention Centre and Peppers have also shown great community support, by in turn hosting

is on the increase. Starting in 2012, $9582 was raised; 2013 - $13,213, 2014 - $16,770, 2015 - $19,921, 2016 - $34,197 and now in 2017 - $36,243, with further donations still to be received.

Instead she let us into the after-world that many of our elite athletes encounter, when as they say, the cheering stops and they face the realities of everyday life.

This is the start of a new life; new friends, having to plan their own day, no coach to turn to for help and advice and they are out of the limelight.

This then of course for some, leads into various stages of depression; and this is when those who dedicate their life to helping others are needed.

The honesty of both ladies really emphasised the need for helpers such as the Salvos - always there, always ready to help.

In his message of thanks to all communities contained in the 2016 Impact Report for Australia Eastern Territory, Chief Secretary-in-Charge, Colonel Mark Campbell said in part, “Because of you we can continue to walk shoulder to shoulder with people in crisis.”

From within the boundaries of our Noosa community, there have, over many years, been people and organisations, whose contribution has been outstanding.

They have passed our way and to these people we are - and always will be - eternally greatful.

At present the Appeal Committee consists of John Madill (Chairman), Rob Pertot, Steve McPharlin, Chris Murfin and Adam Madill.

There can be no doubt that these names are but a drop in the ocean of the many that have preceded them; and by acknowledgment of the present, we also acknowledge the past.

This we must do for they are, one and all - OUR PEOPLE. ●

When we look at some of the breakdowns, it is easy to see the necessity for these appeals; but most importantly, it shows just where your money goes. A sum of $10,000 can provide over 2000 meals to people during natural disasters; $15,000 will help fund 75 sessions of youth homelessness awareness workshops in schools.

To help a family out of poverty, through professional financial counselling for a year, $1000 and $3000 will provide six months of case management and support for four families in crisis situations.

Then the amount required to fund the placement of one person in a 46 week residential program, to recover from drug and alcohol addiction, $37,000.

To those who may think that these are just words on a piece of paper, please take the opportunity to attend next year’s Salvos fund-raising breakfast.

You may get the opportunity to sit, and personally hear from someone who has walked the streets of domestic violence or fought their way back from the dark world of drugs and depression; you won’t be disappointed for it is these people who speak from the heart.

After a warm welcome from Chairman John who bid us ’The top of the morning’, an honest and heart-wrenching speech, delivered by a lady who has experienced the above, made us who have never been there, appreciate our good fortune.

Following this lady was guest speaker Libby Trickett, Olympic Gold medallist and world swimming champion.

WEEDS BATTLEFRONT FOR GREEN ARMY RECRUITS The latest Green Army team to help support Noosa Bushland Care groups’ war on weeds earned their stripes this month.

The nine participants have spent the past 23 weeks removing environmental weeds from Noosa’s bushland reserves.

The Green Army participants officially graduated on 19 May, days after a celebratory morning tea in recognition of their contribution to local conservation efforts.

Noosa Council Natural Areas officer Michael Lyons said the group of 17-24-year-olds were the third Green Army team to join conservation efforts

in Noosa since 2014, and had shown great enthusiasm.

“The Green Army program is a fantastic way for young people to enter the natural resource management industry and the workforce in general,” he said.

“Some participants are continuing within this field, and others now have a clearer direction in which to take their careers. It has been an absolute pleasure working alongside them.”

The Federal Government’s Green Army program aims to involve 17-24-year-olds in conservation projects Australia wide, to teach them about conservation issues, and equip them with work and life skills. ●

There’s an energy at a well-run auction that puts the power firmly in the hands of the vendor. The vendor is the one who gets to say yes or no to the highest price on the day. Once yes is reached, the pressure is on for any other interested parties to show their hand now, or lose the chance to play the game at all.

Take the other alternative, where the

seller says no and the property is passed in. Of course the next step is to negotiate and sometimes, that negotiation will still yield an exceptional result. But the minute the auction is over, the pressure on buyers has immediately lessened. In many cases, the power base shifts away from the seller and over to them.

’AHEAD OF THE PACK‘ THE Century 21 Conolly Hay Group trophy wall may need to be extended to make room for the agency’s most recent swag of awards.

The Noosa-based team walked away from the Century 21 quarterly awards ceremony with their arms full and their smiles wide, winning the award for the top office for the first quarter for both the number of properties sold and the gross closed commissions.

The biggest success however waited at the end when Century 21 Conolly Hay Group picked up the highly-prized award for the top office nationwide.

Vicki Bond, Century 21 Queensland Service Area and Development manager, said the Conolly Hay Group team were “ahead of the pack” when considering their results and achievements throughout the quarter.

Starting as a team of two in 2012, the Century 21 Conolly Hay Group has since expanded to four offices, Noosa Heads, Peregian Beach, Sunshine Beach and the soonto-open Tewantin, with a staff of 21 including high-achieving sales agents, award-winning property managers and exceptional support staff.

NEWS MARKING RECONCILIATION WEEK

WILDLIFE CAPTURED IN HABITAT

Noosa District State High School marked Reconciliation Week with a reconciliation tree planting ceremony held at both the Cooroy and Pomona campus.

The planting of native hibiscus plants symbolises healing for the Stolen Generations and the impact of past policies that disconnected Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with their culture and whole Australian community.

Indigenous liaison officer Kristal Muggleton undertook the ceremony with students at both campuses, and also helped with the running of a number of other activities. ●

The importance of photography in scientific research has led the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) to introduce a photographic course for animal ecology students.

Students of USC’s new Photography for Animal Ecologists course recently took part in an intensive four-day workshop on Fraser Island to record images of its diverse animal species.

USC lecturer in animal ecophysiology Dr Christofer Clemente said photographing animals in the wild for scientific purposes differed from general wildlife photography, where the emphasis was on visual appeal.

“Animal ecologists use photographs to document wildlife in their natural settings and convey information about their behaviour, health, habitats and anatomy,” he said.

“Despite images now being an essential element of almost all forms of scientific literature, from research papers and scientific journals to blogs and websites, most scientists do not receive any formal photographic training.”

He said the USC students were taught how to illustrate specific aspects of wildlife, such as anatomical features and habitats, while making the images visually engaging.

One imaginative student created a life-sized papier mache imitation of a jabiru to attract a live bird which students were able to capture photographically. ●

NEWS MAGIC OF WORKING WITH CHILDREN Animals, circus acts and magic tricks are turning occupational therapy into a fun activity and gaining results with children, according to USC occupational therapy lecturer Dr Ann KennedyBehr.

Dr Kennedy-Behr and University of Queensland Emeritus Professor Sylvia Rodger have edited a book which outlines these techniques in a hands-on guide for clinicians and OT students.

The Occupation-Centred Practice with Children: A Practical Guide for Occupational Therapists details evidence-based approaches for working with children and families, including coaching, interventions within schools and using animals.

“Activities like learning to perform card tricks are fantastic motivators - they let children focus on a fun activity or experience while also improving their motor skills and self-confidence,” Dr Kennedy-Behr said.

“It was fantastic getting to work with some extremely experienced and talented authors both from Australia and around the world.”

Occupation-Centred Practice with Children, published by Wiley, is expected to be used as a required text for OT degrees at universities across Australia and Europe. Dr Kennedy-Behr said she was honoured to have co-edited the book with Professor Rodger who died recently.

“Sylvia was extremely well regarded within the OT field and was considered a leading expert on working with children with autism,” she said.

“I’ll be promoting the book in her memory.” ●

POLICE DOG BROCKY WELCOMED The Queensland Police Service welcomed three new Police Dogs to its ranks last week as part of an induction ceremony conducted by Commissioner Ian Stewart.

CHICKEN GROWERS JOIN FARMERS FEDERATION The Australian Chicken Growers Council (ACGC) has joined the National Farmers Federation (NFF).

NFF President Fiona Simson said having ACGC join the NFF, meant they could get a more informed understanding of the challenges and

opportunities before chicken growers and, as a result, be better able to advocate in their interests.

ACGC president James Mifsud said the sector was growing by up to three per cent annually. “As is the case for all farmers, remaining competitive is the key to our long-term success,” he said.

“To be competitive we need investment in infrastructure including road and telecommunications, a tax and regulatory system that supports growers and a fair return for what we produce. ●

LOSS OF POWER This pipe dream was to be a crowning legacy for ex-Mayor Playford but it was always dogged by setbacks and should have been canned in 2014. GHD’s commissioned feasibility study reported highlighted the many problems associated with this type of electric battery transport, yet council persisted and engaged Optare at an approximate cost of $800,000 to provide two electric buses which needed recharge systems costing at least $30,000 (much more for the optimal fast charge).

When Optare said they could not proceed under the terms of the contract, in early 2016 council engaged Chinese company Higer to provide two electric buses at a cost of approximately $1 million - TransLink to equally share the cost. Energex were approached to supply two charging stations. We know they were unwilling partners.

The latest contract has now been cancelled and if Mayor Wellington says council has only spent $18,000 on this project then he must be dreaming. I know he’s stressed but this is a ridiculous statement.

Perhaps he’s using the Playford de-amalgamation costing method of calculation, but with respect he’s wrong.

Former Mayor Playford had a council officer working on this project from February 2014 (SCD, 23 February 2014) and this project has been operational since that time.

How much did the 2014 GHD feasibility report cost? What are the staff costs for this project? Did council buy two ultra-capacitor charging stations?

Though an under-resourced de-amalgamated council, councillors seem to have a predilection for outlandish schemes, eg New Democracy’s Community Jury and some NBRF initiatives, but basic research would have shown this type of electric bus trial was too ambitious for Noosa.

As stated, I think this council is in disarray.

The propaganda is “establish oyster reefs to cleanse our Noosa River”? If you check the Waterwatch monitoring back to 1996 when I got involved and led Nica, you will find we have been around an A+ or pristine and have been the benchmark for river systems in Queensland.

So why then do we need to spend loads of

WATCHING YOU We would like to advise anyone engaging in unlawful activity that the police have been advised and if caught they will certainly be prosecuted, as we are sick and tired of the threats, the bluffs, the bullying and now the outright vandalism which seem to be the only weapons of some of those supporting the Ecocamp proposal. I wonder if those behind the Ecocamp proposal are aware of the lengths to which some of their supporters are apparently willing to go, in order to back a lost cause?

A decision from the Department of Parks and Recreation on the Ecocamp/Discovery Group’s application for a fish habitat downgrade at Elanda is expected this week. Regardless of that decision, there are further approval stages which the project would still need to go through. The right to free speech throughout this approval process must be maintained - we are watching you.

I am still scratching my head trying to understand Noosa mayor, Tony Wellington’s recent comments in the local press about his council praying for dry weather, to achieve their target of 90 per cent capital works.

the last two years, only achieving an abysmal two-thirds of their capital works and this year struggling to reach 90 per cent!

But it seems that this year the council has a good excuse for it, “we have had a fair bit of wet weather" the mayor was told ... which comes as a big surprise to me, as I live near Noosa, and the dam on our property dried up for the first time in 17 years!

Mr Wellington also seems to have a rather high opinion of his art exposition, qualifying his work as 'quirky, witty and very zen’... nothing less! I guess if this council keeps up their poor management and failures, like the recent electric bus fiasco, Mr Wellington will soon have plenty of time to practice his painting.

It would seem that some of the Discovery Group’s supporters are resorting to desperate means in their attempts to suppress all opposition to the company’s proposal for converting a peaceful and affordable recreation camp at Elanda Point into the HabitatNoosa fantasy world. FROM THE GOLDEN YEARS OF JAZZ It’s been a while since we have heard these fine players in Noosa - Michael, Sandra and Richard were last here together with the “Sweet Lowdowns” and were thought of then as one of the finest small groups around. Michael has since traveled the world playing with various groups including the Hot Jazz Alliance. On this occasion as the Michael McQuaid Quartet, they team up with esteemed Jo Bloomfield on piano.

Michael McQuaid plays jazz and swing from the 1920s and ’30s with remarkable energy and originality. He is an Australian multi-instrumentalist, regularly performing on clarinet, saxophones, trumpet and even occasionally piano.

He has recently returned to Melbourne after spending 2015 travelling and performing around Europe and America.

McQuaid began performing with professional bands at the age of 15. He was mentored by many of Australia’s finest jazz musicians, including Ade Monsbourgh, Tom Baker and Paul Furniss and is considered, these days, to be an acknowledged authority on this era of music by critics.

2/3 cup thickened cream.

2 eggs, separated.

2 tablespoons caster sugar.

After-dinner mints, to serve.

METHOD 1. Place chocolate in a heatproof microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on medium (50 per cent) for 2-3 minutes, stirring with a metal spoon halfway through cooking, or until smooth. Set aside for 10 minutes to cool.

2. Using an electric mixer, beat cream for 2-3 minutes until soft peaks form.

3. Add egg yolks and half the cream to chocolate. Stir to combine. Fold in remaining cream. Wash and dry the beaters and bowl.

4. Using electric mixer, beat egg whites for 3 to 4 minutes until soft peaks form. Add sugar. Beat until glossy. Fold half the egg white mixture into chocolate until combined.

Fold in remaining egg white mixture.

5. Spoon mixture into four 1/2 cup-capacity glasses. Refrigerate for 3-4 hours or until set. Serve topped with after-dinner mints.

1. Queensland Day When: Saturday 10 June Where: Noosa Library, Wallace Park, Wallace Drive, Noosaville Price: Free Behind Queensland’s Words is a special program designed to promote Queensland’s rich literary culture and raise awareness of Queensland Day through a Writers Festival, showcasing Queensland’s high-profile and popular authors. It also includes a Pop-up Book shop which provides our community with the opportunity to engage with other local, inspiring writers and leading industry

professionals from Queensland.

Noosa Library Service will also highlight Queensland Day through Queenslandthemed informational displays, storytelling events and staff dress-ups.

2. Noosa Come Together When: Sunday 11 June Where: Noosaville Lions Park, Gympie Terrace, Noosaville Price: Free entry Noosa Come Together is a family-friendly event with live music, silent auction, international food court, sailing, kids rides, cooking classes and more, raising money to support sporting activities for children with disabilities.

The festival includes the finals of the Regional Busking Championships to decide who will attend the Australian Busking Championships.

Noosa Come Together is a fund-raiser for sporting activities for Sunshine Coast children with a disability, including Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club’s Sailability program, Riding for the Disabled and Disabled Surfers Association.

3. Australian National Busking Championships When: Saturday and Sunday, 10-11 June Where: Gympie Terrace, Noosaville Time: Saturday 9am-5pm; Sunday afternoon Price: Free See musicians performing in the Australian National Busking Championships regional finals, being held in Noosa for the first time.

Busking heats will be held along Gympie Terrace, Noosaville, near the Noosa River foreshore on Saturday 10 June from 9am to 5pm. The finals concert will be held as part of the Noosa Come Together Festival on the

River Stage on Sunday 11 June.

Musicians including solo performers, choirs, ensembles, junior and senior school groups and others will perform at selected sites along the Noosa River in 20-minute spots.

There will also be international food, kids entertainment, water activities, dancing and more street fun.

Roaming judges and people’s choice busker dollars will be used to determine three finalists who will perform at the Noosa Come Together Festival.

The Noosa Busking Championships are part of a nationwide cultural celebration of music and street performance with five regional competitions around Australian in 2017.

All profits will be distributed to local disability charities including the Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club’s Sailability program. ●

3. Check your head Mental health is really, really, really important. Think about several things: Are you drinking too much? Are you paying attention to signs of depression or other disorders? These days, it’s common practice to make your head a priority. Meditation or yoga is invaluable, and for things needing more attention then see that doctor you found.

A recent Australian report found that in 1911, there were about 2.3 million males living in Australia (51.9 per cent of the total population). The median age of males was 24.6 years, 11 years younger than now (2017), and 86 per cent were aged less than 50. Compared to today’s statistic of 70 per cent males under 50. The findings also show that males living beyond 65 years has tripled from one in four in 1911 to now being one in 12. So, as a population base, men are seemingly living longer than any time in history.

In contrast to increased life expectancy was the findings of increased mortality/ death rates of men under the age of 65 caused by chronic diseases such as heart and lung disease. This has shifted from infectious diseases such as measles and influenza. The study attributed these changed rates in the Australian male populations health status over the century to technological, historical, social and economic factors, which include, a move from an agricultural to industrial economy, from active to sedentary vocations, from the consumption of non-processed foods to processed food choices. Combine these social changes with a reported reduction in physically activity levels among Australian men and we have a statistic of 42 per cent of Australian males being considered overweight and at risk of exposure to preventable lifestyle diseases.

What is the solution for Australian men?

There are a myriad of answers, however, according to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, “Sport and other forms of physical activity can improve male psychological wellbeing and may foster social networks which provide support and opportunities for developing healthier behaviours choices”. Regular sufficient physical activity is also associated with a healthy body weight and a reduced risk of many chronic conditions and injuries.

In light of the 42 per cent obesity statistics, the health status of Australian males is more than ever in our history,

influenced by risk factors that are preventable in nature.

The solution to a healthier Australian male population may vary from one individual to another; however, one thing that remains constant, prioritising exercise at least three times per week is imperative in reducing the exposure to risk factors of chronic conditions.

Sport-related goals maybe the critical component to maintaining a healthy lifestyle, it’s just a matter of prioritising this into our schedules. ●

BY MARGARET MACCOLL Noosa Council is acting to meet the demands of skaters to build an enclosed or in-ground skate bowl in a major upgrade of Sunshine Beach Skate Park beginning this month.

NOOSA LANDCARE MEET THE AUTHOR

Project officer Dallas Bickley said every surface of the new skate park was designed with skating in mind, including the new concrete seats.

“The existing park is more than 13 years old, so it’s due for an upgrade,” he said.

“Resurfacing of the park plus the addition of water taps were other popular requests from skaters during last year’s community consultation. This upgrade will deliver all of that.”

The new park will cater for both street and transition skaters, with key elements including a mini-half pipe, rollover with A-frame hubba, flat bank and jersey block and loveseat quarter pipe.

On 15 June, it’s meet the author night at Noosa Landcare. Glenn Leiper, co-author and key photographer of the local native plant bible, Mangroves to Mountains, is presenting our next workshop. Once the team established which direction was forward - with a lot of patient support and direction from the coaches - they really hit their stride. All the work done at training became apparent as passing skills showed some real improvement this week. Lincoln and Matthew were unstoppable once they started running, and scored some of the team’s tries, along with Chayse, Owen and Luke. Player of the match went to Henry and Owen.

Noosa Reds 90 def Saints 15 An early turnover set the tone of the match as the Reds ran in several early tries. Alfie lead from the front by protecting possession at every ruck and thereby allowing the backs clean ball to run at will.

Defence will be a focus at training this week as three soft tries were allowed over the Reds' line. Counter rucking was a strong point this week and the team held a lot of ball possession as a result. As we approach the halfway mark in the season it is evident that the boys are learning the value of every player doing their role and learning to trust each other’s different abilities and specialties. UNDER 9 GOLD Under 9 Gold are coming into their own in the second half of the season. They notched up their sixth win out of nine games when they won a close home game against Palmwoods.

'Bella the Boot' got the team in front with a goal early in the first half but despite a number of chances by the other forwards - Joel and Harrison -they couldn’t convert.

Strong goal keeping by Oliver gave Noosa a clean sheet for the first half. Palmwoods slipped one by dedicated keeper Eli early in the second half. Tight defence and solid midfield kept the Palmwoods' attackers out. It was a great team effort that found Harrison with the ball at his feet in front of goals, a calm head prevailed as he slotted the winner away. A great effort by the whole team, but it was Cooper that showed his true colours as a strong midfielder and took home Player of the Match.

Standouts for this week as we now have two awards were: Best Player of the Day to Lachlan Boully for outstanding defence and attacking skills and the Most Improved Player went to Johny Wyspianska for his continued hard work and commitment on the field and training.

There were others who toiled hard and could have also been named.

AWESOME BIG WAVE PROJECT A few months back cinematographer Frothin’ Tim Bonython jetted into the Noosa Festival of Surfing to give us a taste of his long-awaited Big Wave Project, a labour of love that has broken his heart and nearly killed him more than once over five years of shooting the biggest waves ever ridden from close proximity.

Tim managed to squeeze us in between a lightning dash to Nazare, Portugal, for a swell the size of a block of flats, and a month in the edit suite putting the finishing touches to his big wave epic, and, alongside our own surf-cine veteran Greg Huglin, he gave us a jaw-dropping preview of what was to come.

Well, what was to come has now arrived, and Tim will present Big Wave Project for one show only at the Noosa Cinemas on Saturday night after a sell-out tour of southern states. If you’ve never experienced a Frothin’ Tim presentation, book now, if not sooner! In the old style of surfing’s roadshow men, Tim calls the action from an on-stage microphone, often getting so swept up in the humongous wipeout or miraculous emergence from a deepthroated barrel that you forget that he’s seen the action a hundred times before.

It’s impossible not to share his stoke.

I got Tim on the phone a few days ago at an airport transit stop after full houses in Melbourne and Geelong. He was still buzzing. “Mate, people are just getting carried away by the emotion of watching these guys putting everything on the line to ride the biggest waves ever. One lady was in tears last night.”

THE WRECKS ARE BACK Meanwhile, over the hill (and I do mean over the hill) at Halse Lodge, competitors in the Noosa Malibu Club’s annual geriatric knees-up, the Noosa Wrecks and Relics Contest, will be wheeling their zimmer frames up the driveway for a more sedate evening. The Noosa National Surfing Reserve will be screening the surfboard pioneers documentary, Men of Wood and Foam, for those who haven’t caught up with it yet, as well as the short feature, Cup of Tea With God, which explains what the Noosa Surfing Reserve is all about.

Now in its 13th year, the Wrecks and Relics, which is exclusively for the over-50s, has become one of the hottest tickets on the surfing calendar, with its age divisions - all the way up to 70 plus - filling to overflowing long before contest weekend. What began as a little local get-together back in the early years of the century, has morphed into a global (well, trans-Tasman at least) battle for surfing supremacy between some of the gnarliest old bastards who ever stood on foam. With not many good years ahead, these silver surfers (your humble correspondent included) will stop at nothing to get one last trophy for the mantelpiece.

Despite this, or perhaps because of it, I have to say it’s the event I most look

Wrecks HQ. forward to competing in each year, and will move heaven and earth to ensure that I’m in Noosa for it. The main reason is the spirit of bonhomie that’s surrounded it from the get-go. Even former champs who’ve been paddling you up the point or snaking you all their competitive careers, do so now with a smile from ear to ear, their approach to their surfing, and to their sundowners, finally imbued with the enthusiasm and good graces that come only with advanced age.

The Wrecks - not just the old blokes, but old gals too, and a handful of oceanic sweepers - will be disporting themselves from around 7am at a beach near you, hopefully First Point, right through the weekend, so come along and give them a cheer, and if you’re in the water, give them a wide berth.

If you hear a manic cackle and a crackly old voice yell, “old fart coming through”, be very afraid.

Jack O Neill, RIP FOOTNOTE: I try not to make this column too much like the obituary page, but we lost another legend of our sport and culture, just days after the passing of John Severson. Jack O’Neill is usually credited with inventing the neoprene wetsuit. The story is a bit more complex than that, but one thing is for sure: generations of cold water surfers have had plenty of reasons to be thankful since Jack first started selling his primitive suits in San Francisco and Santa Cruz from 1952. The O’Neill company went on to become an industry leader. Jack always looked like a bit of a pirate, but never more so than after his surfboard ricocheted back at him while he was testing son Pat’s leg-rope designs in the 1970s and took his left eye out. He died last weekend surrounded by family, with the Pacific lapping the deck of the Santa Cruz beach house he had lived in for 60 years.

He was 94. ●

BY DONNA FREY NOOSA DOLPHINS Anticipation of the local Noosa Under 11s derby increased when it was revealed that there would be community pizza after the game.

At 5.10pm sharp, the Fins and the Reds emerged on the field through a guard of honour provided by the junior members of the club.

With many players having known each other since pre-school, the stakes were high as the winner gets first dibs on the pizza.

Looking like warriors raised from Mordor, the teams exchanged steely looks in

The coaches engaged in a firm white knuckle handshake that was a sign of things to come, while the players assumed their field positions.

Not since before Mark Coyne’s miracle try in game one of the 1994 State of Origin was a crowd this quiet!

This was never going to be a walkover, and previous form does not count when you play your mates for honour and bragging rights.

Like heavyweights slugging it out, the Fins and Reds traded tries, fought at the breakdown and set about imposing

themselves on the team.

With the score tied at half time and the oranges eaten, both teams set about breaking the spirit of the other.

On display was the future of Noosa Rugby Union - where mates can go hammer and tong before sharing a laugh and a good feed.

The level of skill was admirable and the game technical, the effort on par with any “Origin” series.

Before running out eventual winners, the Fins were kept honest by a mighty Reds outfit.

HAPPY ANGLERS IN NOOSA AND SURROUNDS Noosa has been fishing a treat as we move into prime time for tailor and jewies off the beach.

The Noosa north shore has been inundated with anglers and their 4x4 heading up the beach in search of those elusive tailor, anglers will not disappointed with some good catches reported.

Along with the tailor, there were some nice bream, flathead, whiting and bigger dart.

Most anglers are bait fishing with pillies, mullet strips, and salted bonito. Don’t despair if you don’t have a 4x4 as the gutter just outside the Northshore Caravan Park are also holding good fish.

To the south, the Maroochy north shore and Yaroomba Rocks has been the place for some quality jewies, this time of the year is one of the strong for big jew.

Try not to strike on the first bite but let the fish run, many a quality jew is lost in the enthusiasm of an angler striking too soon, jew love to pick at baits, or roll it round in their mouths scaling before they swallow. Strike too soon and you will simply pull the hook from the fish’s mouth.

In the Noosa River, the mouth has been really firing with quality bream, tailor, trevally and school jew. Flesh baits like mullet and bonito strips have been one of the best performers, soft plastics and slugs are also claiming some quality fish.

Down towards the sand bags on the Dog Beach quality whiting have taken a liking to worms, peeled prawns, and yabbies.

Smaller popper and surface walkers have also claimed there fair share of fish.

Woods Bay has again been the home of some quality trevally, tailor and queenies.

Anglers have been enticing them with surface poppers in the low light periods and soft plastics through the day.

Gympie Terrace stretch of the Noosa River has fished well with families enjoying whiting, bream and the odd flathead.

In the ski runs, flathead have been plentiful with the run-out tide - the best time to plan your attack. Soft plastic in reds and pinks have been very productive.

Offshore, things will be equally amazing, and as the swell settles down we should still see those quality spotted and spanish mackerel, look for that bird activity as these speedsters of the sea smash the bait balls from underneath.

Fast trolled lures are a great way to cover a lot of ground when things are a little quiet, work those drop off and edges of the reef, this is where these fish like to congregate and feed on smaller bait schools.

There has been some real advances in deep trolling lures with most able to travel at up to twelve knots.

Sunshine Reef is producing some great coral trout, fish your lure or soft plastic hard to the bottom here and you will be rewarded.

Also at Sunshine, the sweetlip are on the chew as well as good parrot and snapper.

The deeper reefs like Chardon’s and North Reef have also come up with the goods, with larger snapper, pearl perch, sweetlip, cobia.

Up towards Double Island and the Banks Snapper, venus tusk fish, pearl perch, moses perch and lots of amberjack will all be on the menu.

Don’t forget to load those spanner crab traps as there are still plenty on offer with many traps coming up loaded.

HONOURING OUR GREAT LIFESAVERS At the Annual Dinner and Presentation of Trophies, the Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club president, Ross Fisher, welcomed honoured guests, Life Members, sponsors and club members by saying “This year, our 89th year of patrolling, we have again upheld our proud tradition of no lives lost between the flags while members on patrol.”

After thanking the patrol members, he acknowledged the results of the club competition team and gave a big thank you to Chairman Ian Young OAM and Anton Mogg for their work in running the Surf (Supporter) Club.

He then addressed the important role of the club sponsors and also welcomed new sponsors into the Noosa family.

“We cannot say enough for your support, it is most vital and without you our work things would indeed be harder.”

For the presentation of trophies, Club Captain Roger Aspinall covered Life Saving and Peter French, Director of Surf Sports, stood for competition.

The major awards went to the following: Life Saving - Senior Patrol Person of the Year: Chris Clark; Junior: Robert Lemon; Most Patrol Hours: Roberta Gordon (Female) and Pablo Aguirre (Male); and most prestigious - the Dave O’Donnell Perpetual Trophy - Patrol Captain of the Year: Olivia Blight.

Surf Sports - Open Mens Champion: Rhys Burrows; Open Female: Lana Rogers; Most Improved Junior: Riley Dixon; Team of the Year, First Aid and Best Boat Crew of the Year: Spangled Drongos.

There were many other awards - well done to all recipients.

Sunshine Beach Surf Life Saving Club has also finished off their season with a gala annual dinner.

Once again, the two local clubs Noosa Heads (and Peregian area) and Sunshine Beach have made an outstanding contribution to beach safety within the community.

With visitations to the area going gangbusters, the vital role played by these people within the tourist industry should not be taken for granted.

When we speak of outstanding contributions, there are two groups whose efforts are definitely above and beyond all else, and they are the Seahorse Nipper and the IRB (Noosa and Sunshine) training teams.

Good to see the Seahorse teams receive Noosa's President's Medal. Presented by President Ross Fisher, this is one of the top awards of the year, so to the recipients Steve

and Nicole Mawby, and Lorna Gardner - well done to all. This concept has now spread throughout Australia.

With the courtesy roving IRB patrols (North Shore to Alexandria Bay) on the increase, achieving and maintaining a high standard of drivers and crews is the responsibility of the training teams: Chris Grandemange, Trevor King and Steve Crisp from Noosa, and Scott Summers and Bill Twigger from Sunshine. Your dedication and time is noted.

On Monday, lifesavers from all over the state gathered at Buderim to bid a sad farewell to one of lifesaving's greats, Ron “Boppo” Tallon OAM, Hall of Fame. To wife Vonnie and family - our best wishes.

Thirteen Noosa Masters Swimming Club members competed in the spectacular new AUT Millennium National Aquatic Centre, and at Takapuna Beach.

brought home a swag of medals.

The Open Water swimmers confronted the risk of hypothermia to comply with FINA regulations of ‘no wetsuits allowed’ - to swim 2.5kms in cold - but calm and sunny - conditions.

Now their sights are set on the next World Masters Games, to be held in Kensai, Japan in 2021. ●

Long jumper Zane Branco, 17, along with coaches Mick Hooper and Bec Brice, have been selected to participate in the Athletics Australia Under 19 Talent Squad for 2017.

Originally introduced in 2007, athletes selected to join the program are recognised as having the potential to become senior international athletes.

Athletes and their coaches travel to the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) in Canberra twice a year to work with some of Australia’s best coaches, building the athletes' understanding of the behaviours and commitment required to be an elite athlete.

Athletes receive training and education sessions in several different areas including psychology, injury management, nutrition, high performance life skills, ASADA education, strength, conditioning and recovery.

For Zane, who has been a member of Noosa Athletics for the last five years, selection on the squad has come at the right time.

“It’s great to be given this opportunity and I believe it’s an important stepping stone on my journey to qualify for the 2018 World Under 20 Championships to be held in Tampere, Finland next July,” Zane said.

For Noosa’s specialist jumps coach Bec Brice, the opportunity to work with National Junior Coach and former Olympic long jumper Nicole Boegman-Stewart, and the likes of Olympic coach Gary Bourne, is priceless.
