The hills communities will in due course have access to a modern, multi-purpose community hub within Ferntree Gully, with Knox Council signing off on the purchase of land at 100 Station Street.

Though, it could come at a cost to local business.

Council believes the construction of such a hub is in keeping with its vision for a modern centre, which will continue to serve the community for years to come.

However, the development could affect numerous existing shops and businesses that are located on the 2492m2 parcel of land, although council has assured owners their shortterm future is safe.

Council expects the planning for the site could take as much as five years.

Knox Council Mayor Darren Pearce said the purchase was a significant, strategic step in the revitalisation of Ferntree Gully Village.

“As laid out in the Ferntree Gully Structure Plan, there is a clear vision for Ferntree Gully Village to be a modern, vibrant and thriving Village centre, featuring a new multi-purpose build community hub,” Cr Pearce said.

“A key challenge has been identifying suitable sites to potentially locate the new community hub and with the purchase of 100 Station Street, we are

now in a position to do so.”

Cr Pearce said council would continue to work in partnership with the local community in progressing key priorities identified in the Ferntree Gully Structure Plan.

Ward Councillor Jake Keogh said, upon completion, the site would be a fantastic asset for the community.

“The site is centrally located within easy reach of local shops, the train station and other services and - with the development of the new hub - this site will become a focal point for community activity into the future,” Cr Keogh said.

“Given the longer-term planning that will be required as part of this project, council is committed to working closely with the community and other key stakeholders.”

The decision comes at a time when restrictions on building heights in the area have come under close scrutiny.

In April this year, the issue had been on council’s agenda to set mandatory limits within Upper Ferntree Gully.

This came after a decision to scrap an Amendment, which would have allowed for strict 8.5 metre controls.

The decision went against the recommendation, with the Upper Ferntree Gully activity centre now covered by a discretionary maximum building height of 7.5 metres.

Anglicare Victoria worker, Tori Smith is looking for a foster family for four siblings aged between 7 to 14. She spoke to us about what a difference a loving family could make to their lives.

What are the children like needing care?

Ben*, Alisha*, Jane* and Jenna* are four siblings needing a long-term foster family who can provide them with a safe and nurturing home on a full-time basis. All the children are bright but require extra support on how to express their emotions and feelings appropriately. They respond well to structure and routine. Unfortunately, they have all experienced some tough times and can no longer live with their birth family.

A display that tells the story of Emerald icon Carl Axel Nobelius and his Gembrook Nursery was launched on Sunday 28 May at the Emerald Museum.

More than 100 people attended to help celebrate the event, including descendants of Nobelius and Cardinia Shire Mayor, Cr Brett Owen.

Kitty Owens from Museums Australia was also on hand to give great advice to the committee.

Emerald Museum President, Chris Britton, said the subject was an incredible person.

“The display only touches on the surface of this far-sighted man, his nursery and his family,” she said.

Last year, Nobelius Heritage Park achieved state and national significance.

The Emerald Museum is located in the scenic heritage site and is the only remaining remnant of the nursery, with many specimens of trees once stocked by the nursery.

“Featured in the displays are ledgers with orders from all over the world, the labelling machine and the rare typewriter, dating back to 1884 and used in the Nobelius office,” she said.

“These are housed in new display cabinets that were made by the Emerald Men’s Shed.”

The committee have also produced a new brochure to match the map located in Nobelius Heritage Park, showing the name of plantings, and the

interpretation of trees and heritage sites.

New benches are located on the museum verandah, with wood made from the old cypress hedge that was removed from Worrell Reserve to make way for ‘a place of last resort’ in case of fire in the area.

Meanwhile, Beryl Bartacek was honoured for her long service and commitment to the museum over 20 years.

The community is encouraged to check out the display, which will be a permanent exhibition.

The museum is open every Wednesday from 10am to 3pm; and Sundays from 1.30pm to 4pm.

The committee meets on the first Tuesday of the month at 4pm and are looking for new members.

By Derek Schlennstedt The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) is the independent agency responsible for implementing the NDIS which will be introduced in the Eastern Region (including Yarra Ranges) from 1 November, 2017.

Residents living with permanent disability, their carers and family members are invited to learn more about the NDIS and how it will affect them at upcoming information sessions being held in the Yarra Ranges.

A community information session about the National Disability Insurance Scheme

(NDIS) will be held on Thursday, 8 June, from 10.30am-noon at The Memo in Healesville.

Following this an evening session will also be held at Box Hill Institute’s Lilydale Lakeside Campus’ LC Auditorium from 6.30-8pm.

Healesville residents, Gary and Anthea Forbes, whose son Adam lives with a disability, will be attending the meetings.

Under the NDIS, Anthea said Adam’s care would be more person-centred, and tailored to his specific ability and disability.

This, she said, would improve Adam’s quality of life and help him reach his full potential.

“He always needs a carer; he can never go on his own,” Anthea said.

“The NDIS is for people who are living with lifelong disability. It’s about giving them the best potential, best outcomes, the best they can achieve.

The NDIS is a new way of delivering services and support to people with permanent disability in Australia.

By July 2019, it is estimated that 105,000 Victorians will have transitioned to the scheme.

Artists fire up to help

By Derek Schlennstedt Firefighters at Belgrave CFA are gearing up for their 34th annual art show.

With more than 300 pieces from local and national artists on show and available for puchase, the community is being welcomed to come and participate in supporting the brigade.

The iconic art show is used as the brigade’s major fund-raiser, with a small percentage of each painting going to the brigade.

There are various different styles

being featured at the show and Kirstin Cross, community education officer at Belgrave Fire Brigade said visitors could expect a wonderful array of art.

“There are so many different styles, you can have abstract work, watercolour works, and the detail in all of them is incredible, it really does take your breath away,” Kirstin said.

The art show is renowned throughout Victoria, with some artists sending their work thousands of miles to exhibit in the show.

“We’ve got one artist who couriers his

work to us from the other side of the city and then some of the other artists paint just for the art show which is really lovely,” Kirstin said.

Kirstin encourages and invites everyone to come along to the event to see a diverse range of intricate and beautiful art.

“The beauty of having it over the four days is you can come on opening night and meet everybody, and the artists and it’s a really nice atmosphere.

Then throughout the weekend you can have a look, go away, think about it, and you can always come back a day later

and get the painting,” she said.

“People can come in and walk out with something beautiful.”

The Belgrave Fire Brigade Art Show will commence with a champagne opening on Friday 9 June from 7.30pm which will also include a presentation of awards to various artists.

The opening costs $15, but, from 1012 June, entry is free.

The art show is supported by businesses in Belgrave and Tecoma which take out advertising in the show’s catalogue.

Spirit of the Mountain concert shines

By Derek Schlennstedt On Monday 29 May, Tecoma Primary School held a special assembly for the 20th anniversary of the Spirit of the Mountain Concert.

The ‘Spirit of the Mountain’ was a bushfire recovery project for Ferny Creek Primary School and the community after the 1997 Mt Dandenong bushfires which killed three people.

From the recovery project came the song ‘Island in the Sky,’ which was written

by Suzie Davies Splitter and Phil Splitter using the children’s words.

To remember and recognise the importance of the song, Tecoma Primary school worked with Suzie and Phil in holding a concert 20 years on.

Sally Connell the music teacher at Tecoma Primary School said the students loved singing the song, which included references to their towns.

“They loved it because it mentions their towns and they really enjoyed singing about their community," Sally said.

“It was really nice to be given the opportunity to do that.”

Following the 1997 bushfires Susie Davies-Splitter and Phil Splitter, as music educators and therapists, were invited by the Dandenong Ranges Music Council to help those affected by the fires Karen Noonan, the original music teacher at Ferny Creek Primary School, and current arts administrator for the Dandenong Ranges Music Council, said it helped her students at Ferny Creek express their feelings towards the devastation from the bushfires.

“It was a way for the children to express themselves and a positive way for them to start dealing with what they’d been through,” she said.

The song which goes for seven minutes took students at Tecoma Primary a few weeks to learn and the performance was reminiscent of 20 years prior when ferny Creek Primary performed it.

Both Phil and Suzie joined the children in the live performance and Karen Noonan said she was thrilled to see that it was still being sung in the Dandenong ranges.

“It’s hard to believe it’s been 20 years ... that the song continues to be sung really says a lot," she said.

Stolen Holden A 2014 Holden Colorado was stolen from outside Kooringal Road Upwey overnight on 1 June 2017.

At the time it was stolen, the vehicle was displaying personalised registration plates that read GMH888.

Operation Regal Victoria Police will be launching Operation Regal in a bid to prevent road fatalities over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend.

The operation targets the main factors of fatalities, including speed, driver distractions such as mobile phones, fatigue, seatbelt offences and drugs and alcohol.

Captain is seriously sci-fi

Two tip trucks stolen from Nature’s Soil in Silvan have been found and returned and a 32-year-old male from Kurunjang was arrested.

It is believed the trucks were stolen over the weekend of 20 May when the offender broke into Nature’s Soil and grabbed the keys for both trucks. The male was arrested on 1 June when police located the trucks on a residential property near Pyalong.

High school vandalised On Saturday 20 May 2017 at 10.30pm, two people walking through the Emerald High School smashed a glass door and windows to an office building.

Following an investigation and a post on the Eyewatch Cardinia Police service, the two offenders have been allegedly identified.

Cardinia Shire Council is calling on local professionals to donate pre-loved, interview-appropriate clothing to its new ‘Spare Change’ program to assist local youth prepare for interviews. The program, which started in March, is already off to a good start, with donations from council staff and other local professionals. It’s the way forward I encourage all Yarra Ranges residents and ratepayers to read through the budget and council plan and share their thoughts.

We provide more than 120 services across the Yarra Ranges and have along list of priorities and expenses, to which the budget allocates essential funding.

Council has allocated $8.6 million to aged and disability support services, $4.4 million to delivering world-class art exhibitions and performances at our six cultural facilities, $3.8 million to our libraries and $3.3 million to our maternal and child health program.

Our capital works program budget of $57.54 million (which includes $11.23 million in projects carried forward from last year) is our biggest to date.

Last month council released its draft budget to the community, along with documents that map our way forward for the next four years.

Residents can submit their feedback about the draft budget, council plan and long-term financial plan until 5pm on Thursday, 8 June.

This feedback will be taken on board as we prepare the documents for councillors’ final endorsement at the end of June.

Of that total, $1.5 million will be allocated to the Belgrave MultiPurpose Health Hub construction, $306,000 for a new playground in Queens Park, Healesville and $4.4 million for the first stage of the $28 million Lilydale civic centre redevelopment, among numerous footpath, drainage and road improvement works.

Despite a large annual operational budget of $163.94 million to accompany the Capital Works program, council is well-placed to continue under the Victorian Government’s rate cap of two per cent.

We’re focusing on delivering high-quality services close to home and maintaining our infrastructure, while finding better and more innovative ways to carry out that work to keep costs down.

These documents were all formed with the community in mind, off the back of our recently-developed vision and values statement.

We asked community members about what was important for them as part of our Big Picture consultation in 2016 and gathered almost 3000 responses.

These responses told us that you care about community connections, vibrant culture, accessible services and protecting the natural environment.

That collective voice of the Yarra Ranges has shaped our vision and values statement and our direction as a council.

Take a stand for gender equality

By Derek Schlennstedt Football and netball clubs in Melbourne’s east are being encouraged to take a stand to support gender equality.

A study by Australia’s National Research Organisation for Women’s Safety indicated that intimate partner violence is the leading cause of illness, injury and death for Victorian women aged 18-44.

In response to these statistics, the ‘Be the Change Forum’ aims to inspire and create discussion surrounding what actions local sporting clubs can take to create equal and respectful environments for men and women.

The forum will see special guests Collingwood AFLW player, Emma Grant, and former AFL player, Luke Ablett, share personal stories and thoughts on what clubs can do for gender equality.

Monbulk MP James Merlino on Thursday 25 May announced the Victorian Government is providing support to ensure local youth at risk of disadvantage can continue their education.

Applications have opened for a $1100 scholarship to students who live in public or community housing, or who are at risk of homelessness.

There are 230 scholarships available, designed to assist with expenses such as books, laptops and course fees.

The program provides financial support to help young people to continue their secondary education.

Students are eligible to apply for a scholarship if they are under 21, experiencing financial hardship, and living in social housing or at risk of homelessness.

Students must be studying in Year or 11 or Year 12 at a Victorian Government school - or the equivalent TAFE - for the 2018 academic year.

Honeyeaters quietly thrive

By Derek Schlennstedt While they may be difficult to spot, the helmeted honeyeater population is thriving.

In a report by the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP), 62 helmeted honeyeaters were bred in the wild during the 2016-'17 breeding season.

With a wild population of just under 200 birds, a boom is a relative concept.

However, this is the highest number of helmeted honeyeaters in the wild since the recovery program began in 1989.

Senior ornithologist at DELWP, Bruce Quin, is thrilled with the results, nonetheless.

“This is such fantastic news and is the second-highest number of fledglings we’ve had from a breeding season since the recovery program began 27 years ago,” Mr Quin said.

“The past three years have resulted in very successful breeding seasons and is in part due to the work that has gone into the revegetation of different sites within the Yellingbo Nature Conservation Reserve.”

That revegetation is helped by the volunteer group, Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeater, who produce 100,000 tonnes of plants for revegetation purposes every year.

Each bird will be given a unique colour-band combination and its DNA will be sampled by performing a blood prick test.

“This is a laborious task that takes hours of time waiting, while you battle mosquitoes and leeches, and wait for the helmeted honeyeaters to enter the feeding stations,” Mr Quin said.

Letters Powerless Again, we poor, suffering residents of Mt Toolebewong have been denied electricity by AusNet due to unforeseen circumstances.

The planned outage for last Saturday (27 May) was accepted in good faith, so I personally worked outdoors as it was a mild day.

The outage was supposed to end at 4.30pm but was not restored until 7.12pm.

Not only have we had in the past, poor internet coverage, and until recently, poor mobile phone coverage, but have had to weather the horrendous winds of late winter which usually cause even more power outages, plus trashed and fallen trees everywhere.

We put up with a muddy five-kilometre long road in winter and endure dust and more dust in summer covering all our verandahs and outdoor appliances (are we too spoiled, huh?)

Can’t we even get reliable power supply?

I can imagine the outcry should this happen in ‘hipster’ Brunswick and inner leafy eastern Melbourne suburbs.

You may ask why I live here, as even now barking dogs have accompanied their owners to this once peaceful area, as well as the other inconveniences just mentioned.

I initially thought my residency was to enjoy the great Australian bush, but I now wonder why I even bother anymore, after 37 years of an endurance race.

Country living is for the dreamers or the gullible.

But I guess I am still living in ‘paradise’.

All too clear Disappointed in the current allocation of valuable ratepayer funds in clearing of sycamore trees (and other deciduous trees) in Mount Dandenong.

On seeing recent clearing in Kalorama along the Tourist Road, I had been hopeful a new path extension was being built linking Fiveways to the Kalorama oval and Silvadale General Store.

That would have been a worthy use of money.

Not only has removing the sycamores created a mess, but the hills have lost some of the wonderful autumn colour and shady groves that locals and visitors love.

What a wasted effort!

Please revert back to community consultation in selection of funded projects so ratepayers can decide what is important.

Trees halt progress

By Derek Schlennstedt Following discussion at the 23 May council meeting, the localised planning document will not be submitted to the State Planning minister after controversy surrounding forestry amendments.

Councillors were divided over last-minute changes to the document that included suggestions around the transition to plantation forestry.

Introduced in 2014, at the request of the State Government, the localised planning statement is aimed at identifying and protecting areas of Victoria that have highly significant geographic and physical features.

The document is the combined work of the Yarra Ranges Council and the Community Reference Group and in 2016, a draft was exhibited to the public and attracted a number of submissions.

These submissions were considered by the council on 23 May, and Councillor Mike Clarke, on behalf of some members of the reference group proposed amendments to the document.

Cr Clarke highlighted the need to ‘fine-tune the wording’ on certain points and although the scheme looks at planning around a number of areas including the urban growth boundary, it was forestry, and the wording surrounding “sustainable forestry,” that brought about passionate debate in the council chamber.

“The notion of sustainable forestry, while it can be read as dealing with native forests, indigenous forests and harvesting them in a sustainable manner - I feel, it is really important that we put the emphasis more on plantation forestry and not try and have an opening where we encourage harvesting of natural forests,” said Cr Clarke. Which he noted was strongly supported in his ‘community’.

Councillor Child argued for no changes to be made to the document and said that the timber industry already had to work to strict regulations.

“We’ve got to look at what’s in front of us at the moment and what supports that sustainable industry - there’s no fewer than nine state government Acts which that industry has to work to, it is too tight in regards to regulation,” Cr Child said.

“All those Acts have to be abided by for that sustainable industry.”

Councillor Mike Clarke suggested council adopt the localised planning statement with amendments that had been put forward by some members of the reference group.

Fiona McAllister were among those concerned about the timing of the amendment which they felt had come at the ‘11th hour’, but all councillors agreed it was an ‘excellent document’.

The motion to amend the document was lost however a following deferment put forward by Cr Heenen was carried with Cr Avery, Clarke, Cliff, Cox and Heenan voting in favour of deferring the document to a later date - which has not yet been confirmed.

Rick Houlihan a member of the reference group said there had not been any indication within the reference group that changes needed to be made to the document.

“The problem is that a few members of the group decided they wanted to change the document for the last time without telling the rest of the group,” Mr Houlihan said.

“It’s been a long process and we’ve ended up with a brilliant document - that’s why we’re upset that some individuals want to change it, whether its improving or fine-tuning - the issue is re-open the document and altering it and revising the whole process it’s gone through.“

Workshops run by Melba Support Services’ Able Bakehouse will teach residents and students how to make simple and healthy meals at home.

The ‘Paddock to Plate cafe' workshop is a series of 12 monthly workshops, run by the Able Bakehouse in partnership with Mount Evelyn Primary School and community groups.

Aptly called paddock to plate, the program teaches participants how to prepare delicious food using seasonal local produce plucked from the Yarra Valley’s backyard.

The monthly workshops take place at the Mount Evelyn Community Hall and the Able Bakehouse has teamed up with local cafes whose chefs will demonstrate their signature dishes.

Kerry Kift, project manager for the program said it would not only teach residents how to eat healthy but also show them how affordable it could be.

“It’s all about engaging cooking workshops, and teaching people on how to make healthy meals,” she said.

“We’ll have a demonstration to show how to make it; it will be really hands-on cooking as a group with guidance from the chef.”

I had always battled with weight issues, but it was worse after having my three children.

I tried Gloria Marshall, Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig, which was a significant financial outlay with little long-term success.

Is surgery really the best treatment for Type II diabetes?

The surgery performed for Type II diabetes is fairly much the surgery we’ve always performed for morbid obesity.

However, there is now international consensus that when we are operating primarily for control of Type II diabetes and the metabolic syndrome, professionals should use the term metabolic surgery.

Clearly, the evidence supports the fact that there are tens of thousands of Australians who could benefit from metabolic surgery for their Type II diabetes or polycystic ovarian syndrome.

By Derek Schlennstedt The 11th annual Belgrave Lantern parade is just around the corner, and you can not only take part in the event but also learn how to make wonderful and intricate lanterns.

Belgrave Library will be holding Lantern making workshops every weekend until Saturday 17 June.

The workshops, are split into advanced, beginner, and intermediate classes, and Lantern co-ordinator Renate Crow said the classes were tailored for all different skill ranges.

“There are different types of levels for everyone,” Renate said.

“There are super simple ones, then there are also intermediate lantern workshops which include star shapes and snowflakes - these take longer to build and the paper is a bit trickier to put together.

“The advanced workshops are where you can basically make any shape you like ... previously we’ve had rhinoceros heads and a blue tongue lizard, so that’s where that workshop is aimed.”

Each year, the festival has attracted thousands of people and this year the festival promises bigger and better lanterns.

There’s also the chance to become involved in the festival, and to ensure the event runs smoothly organisers rely on volunteers.

Volunteers can expect to do a variety of jobs in the lead-up to the event and also mainly during the festival.

These jobs include, carrying lanterns, directing traffic and helping put out signs.

“It would be great to have some help," Renate said. “On the night is probably where our greatest need is at the moment, but we’d could also use some

help probably two weeks before putting up signs.“ “On the festival night, we’ll need some lanteneers to carry lanterns, especially some of our big stock lanterns such as the big cockatoo.

“We also need marshalls to help mind the street, they actually get the best view of the entire parade because they are in the middle of it all.“ The workshops taking place in the lead-up to the festival do have costs associated with them, however Renate said she was running a free workshop on 11 June teaching how to make balloon lanterns.

“I wanted something to be free, so everyone can be included, no matter your financial situation you can come in and build a lantern.”

Wonder Woman has solid pacing, and Jenkins deftly balances harrowing war drama with intimate character depth and fanciful elements. The cinematography is breathtakingly vibrant, and the action scenes are jaw-droppingly cool, full of dynamic choreography, concussive impacts and artful, flowing slow-motion.

Jenkins and Gadot have delivered a thrilling, uplifting experience worthy of Wonder Woman’s legacy as a hero and feminine icon.

By Cameron Hutchison Round 7 is done ‘n’ dusted, and there were big winners in Division 1 with the smallest margin being 55 points.

Winners in Division 1 Football Woori Yallock, Healesville, Emerald, Olinda Ferny Creek and Wandin.

Division 2 and the closest game was Belgrave by six points over Powelltown.

Alexandra, Seville and Yarra Glen were also on the winner’s podium.

A Grade netball winners were Woori Yallock, Monbulk Hawks, Olinda Ferny Creek, Wandin and Warburton Millgrove, and in Division 2 Yea, Kinglake, Belgrave and Yarra Junction got the points.

Ladder positions are tight in both divisions of senior football with just two games separating the top four.

Wandin’s win has kept them one game clear on top.

Division 2 and Yarra Glen, Seville and Belgrave are all square on top with Alexandra just one game behind.

Netball in Division 1 sees two wins separating the top three.

Division 2 has Belgrave clear on top by one win, but Yarra Junction and Yarra Glen are knocking on the door.

Division 1 Seniors Football Woori Yallock 14.14 (104) d Gembrook Cockatoo 3.3 (21) Woori Yallock travelled to Gembrook, and unfortunately for Gembrook it was not the day they would have hoped for. Woori Yallock got off to a solid start, kicking four goals to one and a lead of 18 points at quarter time. The second quarter was not the prettiest football; Woori Yallock could only manage 1.5 while Gembrook could only add one behind. The lead had grown out to 28 points at halftime, and it was always going to be hard for Gembrook to win from there.

Woori Yallock’s third quarter was a bit cleaner, kicking 4.3 to 1 straight and it was now game over. Another five goals to one last quarter and Woori Yallock got the four points. Not as convincing as they would have liked, but they now sit fourth on the ladder, percentage and one game clear from Upwey-Tecoma in 5th.

Things were tight in the first, with Healesville only having an eightpoint lead at quarter time. Healesville got their game going in the second and piled on 6.4 to 4.3 to extend the lead to 21 points at half-time.

The momentum stayed with the Bloods in the third as they kicked another 5.5 to 2 straight and the game was all done by three-quarter time.

Healesville held Monbulk goalless in the last, while kicking four themselves and the final margin was 70 points.

The scoring was tough in the first as both sides struggled to get a score on the board. Olinda were wasteful, kicking 1.6, and a scrappy Mount Evelyn could only manage one behind. Things swung into motion in the second with Olinda kicking 3.5 to 2.4 and Olinda’s lead had increased to 12 points at halftime. The game was tight and neither side were looking very impressive.

Olinda came out in the third, and they must have had their boots on the opposite feet because they could not kick straight to save themselves. They managed to kick 4.6 to the Mounters 1.1 and extend their lead to 35 points.

Finally, in the last, they found the big sticks and booted 9.2 to 1.4 and a big win by 81 points.

Brayden Norris was on fire kicking seven for the day. Patrick Rattray was the spearhead for Yea, kicking seven himself, but it was not going to be enough. Alexandra kicked 5.3 to 4.1 in the third and the quarter was even as was the last with nine goals being kicked but the honours went to Alexandra at the end of the day.

1.2 to extend their lead out to 29 points at three-quarter time. Josh Fraser was on fire, kicking 8 goals for the day. It was goals a plenty in the last with 9 goals being kicked but Seville saluted the crowd at the final siren.

Things opened up in the third and goal kicking was on display with 10 goals being kicked and the margin was only six points at three-quarter time. Powelltown turned it on in the last, but could not find the big sticks and in the end kicked themselves out of it with a 2.10 to 3.4 last quarter and gave Belgrave a hard-earned win of six points.

Motoring Nelson breaks through After knocking on the door for many years, Woori Yallock’s Matt Nelson finally broke through on Saturday 20 May at Waikerie’s Sunline Speedway to claim his maiden state title in a national class, winning the South Australian Street Stock Title.

Contesting 20 race meetings in Street Stocks and Modified Sedans during the 2016-'17 season, Nelson has achieved some pleasing results, having finished runner-up in the Victorian Street Stock Title and third in the Victorian Modified Sedan Title.

However, Nelson managed to go one better on Saturday night, after delivering what was a consistent performance.

Starting out of position five for the 25-lap South Australian Title-deciding feature race - by virtue of a fourth, a win and a third in his heat races - a determined Nelson made his way up to third in the opening laps, before quickly moving into second on lap five.

Nelson’s second-place stint lasted only two laps, as Anthony Beare managed to pip him on lap seven.

However, it was not to be for Beare, who was sent rear of field when he lost a muffler on lap 11, once again pro-

moting Nelson to second.

The Vic #61 Wayson Oil/ Smooth Suspension supported VY Holden Commodore racer then set about attempting to chase down race leader Mark Gartner, who sustained a flat tyre on lap 20 while controlling the pace out front.

With Lady Luck smiling down on him, Nelson was able to capitalise on Gartner’s misfortune to take over the lead on lap 23 and holding on to it to claim a comfortable win ahead of current National Champion Rhys Heinrich and Gartner.

Nelson, who has previously won numerous state titles in a range of VSC classes, said it was reward for much effort.

“It means so much to win my first state title in a national class,” he said.

“It takes a lot of time, money and effort to travel around the country as much as we do in Street Stocks and Modified Sedans, so to be able to achieve this result in the South Australian Title really makes all of the sacrifices worthwhile.

“I have to say a huge thanks to my family, who put so much hard work

For his next appearance, Nelson
