Trail cash boost The proposed Emerald to Gembrook Trail has taken another major step forward, with Cardinia Shire Council committing $2.2 million to help bring the project to life. In its 2017-'18 Budget, which the council approved at last week’s meeting, one of the bigticket items on its impressive $44.86 million Capital Works Program was the announcement, which seals local government support for the anticipated project. The funds will complement an additional revamp to community infrastructure over the next five years, with shire-wide commitments confirmed as $19.94 million on roads, $3.86 million in building upgrades and $2.55 million towards playing surfaces. In addition, $1 million will be directed towards the Gembrook pavilion upgrade, as well as $525,000 for the completion of the Emerald netball pavilion and courts. The council had also committed $150,000 to the project in its previous 2016-'17 Budget, with Deputy Mayor Jodie Owen saying resident feedback had driven the decision. “It was fantastic to see so many people willing to share their thoughts and ideas with council on which services they
value, so thank you to everyone who took a few minutes to complete the survey,” she said. The Emerald to Gembrook Trail aims to provide the missing link to the existing Emerald to Cockatoo multi-purpose trail and the Emerald Lake Park walking trail. The $2.5 million, 11km project will comprise shared paths, as well as a combination of sealed and unsealed paths. The trail will suit all types of enthusiasts, with topography ranging from medium to high. Cardinia Shire Council has highlighted the potential to link the trail further into the hills region, including through Menzies Creek and Belgrave. Although, the possibility of such an extension would be dependent on talks with the neighbouring Yarra Ranges Shire. Meanwhile, the adopted budget meets the lower rate environment of 2 per cent, while delivering the extensive capital works. Council acknowledges the Victorian Government for the introduction of the Growing Suburbs Fund, which has allocated Cardinia Shire $9.59 million over recent years, without which significant capital works programs already approved as part of the previous five-year financial plan could not have been funded.
Show of support at heart of art Kirstin Cross and Ian Warburton from the Belgrave Fire Brigade are getting ready for the annual art show, which will exhibit over 300 pieces from local and national artists. Now in its 34th year, the art show is renowned across Victoria and attracts a range and diverse array of art, including - for the second year running - a dedicated photography section. The iconic art show is used as the brigade’s major fund-raiser. Kirstin and Ian invite the community to participate and buy some amazing art. 169023 Picture: ROB CAREW
