‘Breach of trust’

By Peter Douglas Bayswater woman Marion Myra Mills, 62, had suffered a stroke and was enduring financial hardship when she stole more than $28,000 from the UpweyBelgrave RSL Sub-branch, according to defence lawyer Beth Warnock.

Mills, a former Upwey-Belgrave RSL treasurer, on 24 April was sentenced to four months’ jail, wholly suspended for two years, after she pleaded guilty to obtaining financial advantage by deception.

Over an almost three-year period - from 26 November 2010 to 5 August 2013 - Mills made 80 fraudulent payments on her and her husband’s accounts, totalling $28,918.

Mills had issued fake RSL gift vouchers to pay back the tab.

In a court recording obtained by the ‘Mail’, Ms Warnock said around the time of offending, Mills had stopped work due to eyesight issues, with her husband also ceasing full-time work in 2012.

Although Mills received an income insurance payout, the couple were forced to sell their home after struggling to meet mortgage repayments and racking up credit card debt.

Ms Warnock said that Mills had been battling significant health issues. “(She) also suffered a stroke and is still recovering from that physically ... (she) also suffered personality changes after that (often becoming) quite nasty and easily frustrated,” Ms Warnock said.

“Both from her eyesight and stroke, her self-confidence disappeared and it affected her ability to find work.

“I think it’s very clear to the court it’s been a horrible few years for my client.”

Ms Warnock said Mills had no prior convictions and had not committed any further offences.

Mills also reported a history of heavy drinking and a gambling addiction.

In handing down the sentence at the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court, Magistrate Susan Armour said she took into consideration Mills’ clean record, guilty plea and her health issues.

However, she said the seriousness of Mills’ actions could not be ignored.

Sport a health catalyst

Forget the white sands and blue beaches of Bondi, instead Mt Dandenong’s rolling hills could play host to the next Bondi Vet television series.

Dr Tom Cook, a resident vet at Gembrook Veterinary Clinic, is one of many veterinarians who have been fuelled by friends, clients or colleagues to enter into a nationwide search for the next Bondi Vet. Tom the vet has thrown his stethoscope into the ring to help bring the stories of pets in the Dandenongs to the small screen - of which he tells there are many.

“We’ve had everything,” he said.

“A saltwater crocodile that was from a petting zoo, a camel called Gobi, who needed surgery, and we’ve even had an elephant once from the circus, years ago.”

Although having treated a range of exotic animals, Dr Tom also said that being in the Dandenong Ranges they regularly received wildlife cases.

“We also get a lot of wildlife, kangaroos, wombats, sugar gliders, greater gliders, and all sorts of birds.”

“You never know what’s coming around the corner,” he said.

Dr Tom has been a vet for 15 years, and moved to Gembrook 10 years ago to be closer to family.

From being a flying vet at Charters Towers in Northern Queensland to volunteering in Africa, Tom said he always wanted to be a vet and although a brief stint in chemistry while studying, he had never thought about being anything else.

“I grew up always wanting to be a vet.

“All creatures great and small, Harry Butler, David Attenborough, all these naturalists and conservationists were on the telly at the time, and I think that just reinforced that genre for me,” he said Out of the 400 vets who have been

“Respectful relationships and gender equality between men, women, boys and girls is the key to preventing violence against women,” he said.

“No matter what our differences are, or our gender, it is important for each person to feel respected, valued, safe and appreciated.”

Car theft devastation

By Derek Schlennstedt You always remember it, your first car, whether you bought it, inherited it, or took over the car payments from your older brother, no matter how you define it, there’s always a story and there’s always fond memories.

For Adam Versteege, his rare XY Ford Falcon was all of this, a capsule of memories, filled with experiences and adventures formed over 20 years.

But, while Adam was overseas on a business trip, his pride and joy was stolen from his father’s property in Monbulk.

“Me and my dad bought it from a 76 year-old, 20 years ago in Pascoe Vale,” Adam said.

“I was 17 at the time, and it was my first car and I’ve owned it ever since then; I drove it as a daily driver for three to four years.”

“I remember going and looking at the car with my dad; it was beautiful, completely original.”

Since buying it, Adam has kept it in

It’s because of this that he is concerned that whoever stole it may only be using it for parts.

“The car itself is completely original, original engine, original chassis; there’s been absolutely no modifications.”

“My concern is that it has been stripped, and may never be seen again,

which would be very sad," he said.

Despite fetching large amounts of money when sold, for Adams the XY Falcon's sentimental value far outweighs the monetary value.

Adam used the car for his wedding and was planning of having it as a family heirloom eventually passing it onto his 22-month-old son.

“The wedding was a lot of fun," he said.

“All my friends were there, and we all grew up in the era of wanting these classic cars, so when we brought the car out it was a massive talking point ... it was like a time capsule - we all reminisced about the times we’d had driving and doing roadtrips."

“I would have liked to have passed it onto my son.”

It is believed the XY Ford Falcon was taken from the Monbulk property between 27 April and 2 May, and anyone with information is urged to contact Mooroolbark police 24/7 on 9725 9999 or Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.

In brief Subway break-in On Sunday 21 May morning, just after midnight offenders have broken into and taken cash from the Belgrave Subway.

Emerald school burglary

Pittosporum replaced by trees Friends of Glenfern Valley volunteers in Upwey recently hosted 140 international students and eight teachers from Trinity College, Melbourne University. As part of an educational field trip to study the Australian environment, the students planted hundreds of trees in an area recently cleared of sweet pittosporum. Twelve expert volunteers helped out over the morning and afternoon sessions. In addition, volunteers ventured out again on Saturday 20 May to plant a further 200 trees. They will continue to revisit the area to maintain the area over the next couple of years.

Real-world commerce has the edge There is a lot of hype and mythology about the threat of internet sales to small business, says respected business analyst Damian Morgan.

Police are appealing for public assistance in relation to a burglary that occurred on Sunday 7 May 2017 at Emerald Secondary College.

It is believed the offender had broken into the college and taken a chainsaw, gardening tools and a computer.

The offender has then driven off in a green VT commodore.

Anyone with information in relation to the male driver is urged to contact Detective Senior constable Sheree Osborne at Cardinia Criminal Investigation Unit on 5945 2585 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Operation Lookout A police operation in the Yarra Ranges has found more people driving under the influence of drugs than alcohol.

Operation Lookout has been in place since March, and targets drivers driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Since March, Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol has stopped and breath tested 319 vehicles.

To date of the 319 vehicles stopped, there have been 112 offences in total.

Of the 319 cars stopped 50 had been drug tested and 14 were found to be driving under the influence of an oral fluid illicit drug.

Sergeant Graeme Rust at Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol said the statsistics showed there was a large number of people driving under the influence of drugs than alcohol.

“To date, we’ve given preliminary oral fluid tests to 50 drivers, with 14 of those facing driving with an oral fluid illicit drug charges."

“It is showing that there are more drug drivers on the road, and we are trying our best to remove them to make the road safer,” he said.

‘Breach of trust’ From Front page “My concern in particular is that she was the treasurer ... she was the treasurer of an RSL that was in significant financial difficulty,” Magistrate Armour said.

“Despite all of that, there were some 80 transactions over a three-year period ... which had only made the situation worse.

“This is a really serious breach of trust and it’s the type of offending which does warrant a term of imprisonment.”

Mills’ fraudulent actions were uncovered after an audit was ordered on the sub-branch, due to the financial difficulties.

Funds had been required from the state branch at Anzac House to prevent the sub-branch from closing its doors.

Initially, the matter involving Mills had been listed for contested hearing, but was resolved when Mills pleaded guilty in January this year.

Magistrate Armour said an immediate custodial sentence was not required in this case.

“You reported a history of heavy drinking, which is consistent with the nature of these offences and also that you’ve had a poker machine addiction,” Magistrate Armour said.

“In November 2013, you suffered pulmonary embolism, as well as a stroke that caused some right-side weakness and slurred speech.

“I am satisfied ... a term of imprisonment is not necessary.

“I should also indicate if there were to be a breach of the suspended sentence, it is my intention you would serve that period in custody; you will be convicted.”

Meanwhile, in January this year, the Upwey-Belgrave RSL told the ‘Mail’ it was facing the prospect of closure at the conclusion of this year’s Anzac Day services.

Incumbent treasurer Beth Quilty said they would fight on to keep open the RSL, but community support was required, particularly for the bistro.

Just before Anzac Day this year, the sub-branch confirmed they had enjoyed a strong showing of support from the Dandenong Ranges community.

In addition to support from the Healesville RSL, local MPs Edward O’Donohue, Jason Wood and James Merlino had offered their assistance.

The revamped bistro also proved to be a financial benefit.

Sub-branch president David Eaton confirmed the local RSL would remain open into the near future.

“The bistro has been going great guns since opening and it’s now looking like we’ll stay open until at least the end of the year, staving off the threat of poker machines,” he said.

“The bistro has been going crazy since the story was published; we’re not out of the woods but in a much more positive spot.”

The Nobelius Heritage Park and Emerald Museum Committee of Management is seeking new volunteers to help run the Emerald Museum and contribute to the preservation of local history.

New committee members will be appointed at the committee’s biennial general meeting on Tuesday 4 July.

The museum is managed and operated by volunteers, and features more than 3000 local artefacts.

Volunteers are vital to the community; in Cardinia Shire alone, the volunteer numbers are in the hundreds, and are spread across more than 560 organisations, each making

significant contributions to our diverse community.

Many organisations, including the Emerald Museum, would struggle to achieve goals or deliver services without the help of volunteers.

Cardinia Shire mayor Brett Owen said volunteers were extraordinary individuals.

“It takes a special kind of person to volunteer time and energy to serve others, without expecting monetary reward,” Cr Owen said.

“Our volunteers do what they do because they are passionate about helping their local community.

“Council is proud to support

the valuable contribution of volunteers across all community sectors - from arts and culture groups to young people and children’s organisations; from sporting and recreation groups to education and training; and from aged care and disability providers to emergency services.”

A group of Emerald Secondary College students are promoting equality and inclusiveness, as part of their participation in the competition, Future Problem Solving Australia.

The organisation brings together more than 140 schools nationwide to try to solve the issues that the next generation believes are the world’s greatest.

Future Problem Solving is an international educational program for students of all ages, focusing on the development of critical, creative and futuristic thinking skills.

The program challenges students to apply their minds to some of the significant issues

facing the world of today and the future.

Principal Jodie Doble said she was incredibly proud of the young group, comprising Year 8 and 9 students, who are working hard to launch a concept they’ve called P.R.I.D.E. Through this initiative, the group is trying to better the community by making others feel happy, healthy and safe.

Group member Jessica Tilson, 14, said they wanted to promote an inclusive community.

“Our version of P.R.I.D.E is not just about gender and gender identity ... we are promoting an inclusive community no

matter race, age, gender, ethnicity, disability or mental health issues,” she said.

Fellow group member Daisy added, “We are creating a community for everyone, without judgement or stigma”.

The students have drawn upon new research that suggests people suffering from mental health problems do not seek help due to stigma.

They believe their campaign is one way to address this problem.

The P.R.I.D.E team recently helped to spread the word through a parent and community information evening on Tuesday 16 May.

CFA embroiled in politics

By Derek Schlennstedt The State Labor Government has been accused of ‘playing politics’ after it combined the firefighters’ presumptive rights compensation and the fire services legislation amendment into the same bill.

Under the new legislation, Victorian firefighters would only get presumptive cancer compensation rights if the parliament agreed to the Andrews government’s controversial planned CFA split.

Opposition Leader Matthew Guy warned there would be “no guarantee (the legislation) will pass the upper house,” and accused the government of “playing politics with firefighters’ health”.

However, he said that if Labor had introduced a standalone presumptive cancer Bill it would pass the parliament this week.

Premier Daniel Andrews defended tying the changes together and said that when the Coalition was in power, it had failed to introduce the compensation laws.

“We don’t run our reform agenda based on what the opposition might vote for, or vote against.

“They have been all over the place on these issues.”

“The government drafted the Bill, and we’d expect all fair minded members of the Victorian Parliament will vote for that Bill,” Mr Andrews said.

The compensation scheme will formally be open to firefighters who have developed cancers since June 2016.

Following the State Government’s legislation announcements, the State Opposition, came under fire for running a robo-call campaign that claimed the planned CFA restructure would put Victorians at risk.

The fate of the CFA split and new presumptive cancer compensation legislation now lies with the upper house. 168903

The robo-calls were made to Labor electorates over a 24-hour period and the Country Fire Authority’s chief executive, Frances Diver, said the organisation was ‘flooded with complaints’ from people who had received the calls.

“This is a highly irresponsible and unfounded claim, and not an authorised message from CFA,” Ms Diver said.

“CFA is deeply concerned that these calls may erode confidence in public safety and unfairly cause alarm across the community.”

The automated calls introduced listeners to Glen, a CFA volunteer, who directed listeners to sign a petition to save the CFA. “Hi, I’m Glen a CFA volunteer, the

CFA is under threat.”

“No one was consulted about this, not the CFA volunteers, not the CFA leadership and not the community.”

Opposition emergency services spokesman Brad Battin defended the calls and said the Coalition would “continue to ramp up its campaign to

protect the CFA that helps keep Victorians safe.”

Earlier this month on 19 May the State Government announced that paid firefighters from the CFA and Metropolitan Fire Brigade would move to the newly created Fire Rescue Victoria, leaving the CFA to continue as a volunteer only organisation.

Dream of a time Opinion by Peter Douglas I take great pleasure in reading letters submitted to the ‘Mail’, because, to some degree, the content is an indicator of overall community sentiment on issues important to the Yarra Ranges.

One of this newspaper’s more regular letter-writers is Stanley R. Burgess, who has penned his opinion on everything from Lady Gaga, to local and national affairs.

I was most impressed with Mr Burgess’s most recent letter, which featured recently in the ‘Mountain Views Mail’ and ‘Upper Yarra Mail’, praising the contribution of Indigenous footballers for his beloved NRL. In the letter, he cited some incredible statistics, which he wrote were highlighted during the NRL’s recent Indigenous round.

These included that only three per cent of Australia’s population are Indigenous, though 16 per cent of NRL players - and 20 per cent of State of Origin

players - are Indigenous.

Not to mention many of the greats, such as Cowboys star Jonathon ‘JT’ Thurston, are Indigenous.

In the AFL, too, many of the greats have been Indigenous: Andrew McLeod, the Krakouer brothers, Michael Long, Adam Goodes ... the list is almost endless.

In fact, as a Collingwood supporter, my favourite player to watch over the past decade has been Leon Davis, despite his tendency to polarise supporters.

But it was off the field, too, where he was most impressive, despite his reluctance for the spotlight.

He was, and still is, incredibly humble, as well as dedicated to his Indigenous community in his home town near Perth.

On Saturday 27 May, the Healesville and Woori Yallock football clubs played off for the first Dreamtime in the Valley match, which will pay tribute to local Indigenous contributions -

on and off the field.

What an incredible initiative and one we should all support.

The AFL Yarra Ranges league, and all those involved in putting together this day, should be duly congratulated for their efforts.

Let’s hope this marquee match continues for many years.

Because while we often highlight the feats of the great players, such as those listed above, we shouldn’t forget their predecessors and the challenges they faced; trailblazers such as Carlton great Syd Jackson, and Nicky Winmar and Sir Doug Nicholls.

These players had to work many times harder than non-Indigenous players to earn the respect they clearly deserved.

Matches such as the ‘Dreamtime in the Valley’, and the AFL’s and NRL’s Indigenous rounds, serve as a great tribute to acknowledge how far we’ve come, and how far we’ve yet to go.

Currently, during a major fire, the surge capacity for volunteers is largely boosted by volunteers coming from outer-urban CFA stations, and these stations will no longer be part of the CFA. In recent years, there have been eight reviews conducted into fire services, not one of which recommended breaking up the CFA. It is distressing that Daniel Andrews failed to consult with CFA brigades before making this decision.

Indeed, the only consultation he did was with the secretary of the United Firefighters Union, his buddy Peter Marshall.

Letters Old king coal I would like to thank the motorists and truck and bus drivers that tooted their horns in support of our protests outside local MPs’ offices on May 17, 18 and 19.

Their waves and the encouraging nature of their toots showed us that yes, like us, many in the community are concerned about the proposed Adani coal mine. Our message to MPs Michael Sukar, Tony Smith, Jason Wood and Alan Tudge was that the proposed $1 billion in public funds should not be used to assist this climate, Great Barrier Reef and tourism damaging project.

Premier burns CFA Last Friday 19 May, Daniel Andrews ripped apart 160 years of proud history of volunteer fire-fighting in Victoria by his decision to tear apart the CFA. His decision will be detrimental to volunteers and will result in a big decline in volunteer numbers, reducing the capacity of the CFA to fight major fires during the fire season.

Cailie’s eye for colour

By Derek Schlennstedt Cailie Coney is a prolific painter.

At every opportunity the 31-yearold will use her pastels, paintbrushes and gel pens to create vibrant and colourful images.

Every Monday she travels from Warburton to Monbulk to attend her art classes at Monbulk Open Door Community Church, and despite being born with Down Syndrome, Cailie has shown her ability as firstrate artist.

Since primary school Cailie has been interested in all forms of the arts, including music and dance, but it was art that Cailie truly excelled in.

For her first exhibition, she will be presenting her work on the walls at Monbulk Community Church.

Teacher Yvonne Picot has taught Cailie for six years and said she was an inspiration to all the students who attended her class ‘Explore Art’ at the Monbulk Community Church.

“I take the group Explore Art and I encourage my students to find their own abilities.”

“Some work with pastel and some with acrylic paint, other works with water-based pencils or watercolours.

"Cailie has worked with all of them but the latest she is into is the gel pen, she has an incredibly good eye for colour,” Yvonne said.

“She’s very committed, and she’s an inspiration for our group as she

always does her homework and is always drawing or painting.”

As a young adult, Cailie was interviewed and accepted into the Arts Project Australia, which she attended for two years.

The Arts Project Australia supports artists with an intellectual disability, promoting their work and advocating for their inclusion in contemporary art practice and dialogue.

first and Yvonne invites everyone to visit Monbulk Community Church and see the artworks which include bright tones and colours.

Cailie’s mum, Margaret, an artist herself, said that Cailie had improved since joining the art classes in Monbulk and that she had created her own style which included vivid and bright colours.

“Since joining the exploring art group, Cailie has found her own style,” Margaret said.

“She’s currently doing a roadscape with tall buildings and a bright focal point of the sun down at the end of the road.”

“I always loved art too, but I was quite used to old-fashioned artistry and didn’t use much colour - Cailie however taught me the importance of using bright colours.”

The exhibition opens on Monday 29 May and can be viewed every Monday between 2-4pm.

Directed by Danish filmmaker Lone Scherfig, Their Finest is a poignant, charming film about the role entertainment plays in wartime optimism.

In 1940 London, screenwriter Catrin Cole (Gemma Arterton) is enlisted by the British Ministry of Information to help write a morale-boosting film about the evacuation of Dunkirk.

Even with the Blitz underway, war is more of a thematic backdrop to the events of Their Finest.

Even so, the film does a remarkable job of drawing parallels between its characters’ personal struggles and the broader tragedy of World War II. The engrossing narrative also derives strong tension and even tenderly-observed humour from the hard job of spinning hope out of horror.

Arterton delivers an Oscar-worthy performance of graceful confidence and dignity as Catrin, portraying a diligent woman who is passionate about storytelling and who craftily works around the chauvinistic attitudes of the time.

Sam Claflin plays Tom Buckley, Catrin’s adversarial writing partner who gradually comes out of his prickly shell, and Bill Nighy is endearing as Hilliard, a veteran actor who must set aside his inflated pride.

Scherfig also integrates some clever, subtle commentary on modern issues in film, such as gender representation and studios exerting pressure upon writers and directors.

Much like the film Catrin is writing, Their Finest is a compelling, funny and insightful movie about perseverance through art and the uplifting effect of film.

By Cameron Hutchison Round 6 was the Indigenous Round and it was celebrated with a night game between Woori Yallock and Healesville, which saw Healesville come away with the four points.

Other winners were Wandin, Olinda Ferny Creek, Mount Evelyn, Upwey Tecoma, Belgrave, Kinglake, Seville and Yea. The Under 18s had some surprise winners and none more than Emerald over Wandin.

Monbulk, Mount Evelyn, UpweyTecoma and Healesville also defeated their opponents.

A Grade netball also had some surprises and big margins and the winners were Wandin, Olinda-Ferny Creek, Warburton-Millgrove, UpweyTecoma, Woori Yallock, Belgrave, Kinglake, Powelltown and Yea. The game of the day next week in Division 1 will be Olinda Ferny Creek versus Mount Evelyn, while in Division 2 Kinglake play host to Seville and Powelltown take on Belgrave.

Yarra Glen never led at any change and found themselves six points down at quarter time. The conditions were a bit blustery but not enough to have an enormous effect on kicking. Yarra Glen played the first part of quarter number two better; however, Belgrave were able to answer and both sides ended with 4.5 in the quarter. Belgrave are very hard to play on their home turf and play behind the ball very well which showed in the third, with them booting 5.3 to 3.2. A 19-point deficit was going to be hard to peg back.

Yarra Glen fought back in the last and even levelled the scores in the last but Belgrave managed to find their second wind and piled on three late goals to come away with a well-deserved win.

Powelltown outscored Seville in the second, kicking 4.5 to 2.2 but the damage was already done. Powelltown could not match it with Seville at all and Seville kicked another 12 goals to five in the second half to come away with a big 83-point win.

Both teams kicked 4.1 in the second with no one giving anything away and the game was certainly in the balance.

The third quarter was very much the same with Yea kicking four straight to Thornton’s 4.3 and the scores were all tied up. It was going to be survival of the fittest and that ended up being Yea who kicked away with 4.5 to just one behind in the last, and Thornton will be disappointed that they let this one get away.

By Jamie Strudley An excellent cross country course around the picturesque grounds of Cruden Farm was what greeted Yarra Ranges Athletes for Round 3 of the XCR17 season.

Rolling hills and one very muddy bog made for a fun day of athletics.

Georgia Laven once again showed her class with a powerful run to win the Women Under 16 event 6km, outrunning the under 16 and under 18 women.

Georgia’s sister, Maddie, was the club’s other podium finisher, with a well-fought third place in the Womens Under 14 4km race.

Juniors battle under hail With Sunday being cold and wet, Monbulk Junior Football Club players took to the field in what was the first true winter conditions for the season.

Many experienced hail and all were glad of a warm shower on their return home.

Under 9s Another little step forward today with the team learning to pick up and play on an opponent. It is terrific to see this group of kids growing and learning each week.

The last three quarters were very competitive, and the side put into place things the players had been working on at training.
