Union slams ‘false’ hopes

By Luke Voogt A campaign to bring a federal agency’s “700 jobs” to Geelong has created false hopes, according to the boss of Australia’s biggest public service union.

Nadine Flood was scathing of the Committee for Geelong and the TAC’s campaign for relocating Comcare to Geelong.

“Relocating Comcare’s central office to Geelong wouldn’t bring anywhere near the hundreds of jobs that some people are speculating about,” said the Community and Public Sector Union national secretary.

Trader fury at rates hike

By Luke Voogt City Hall will again “screw” Geelong small businesses to make up revenue shortfalls, according to local store owners and investors.

The City flagged increasing commercial rates by 4.3 per cent in its proposed 2017/18 budget.

Belmont store owner Vince Albanese said his rates had more than doubled in the last five years.

“It was about $2600, now it’s $6125 without rubbish (collection). All they care about is how they can get their bottom-line increases.”

Mr Albanese, who was Belmont Business Association president for 10 years, said the suburb was struggling.

“You come to Belmont you’ll seven or eight shops closed now.”

But Mr Albanese said the latest rise was just one of many. “Four per cent sounds like nothing to what I copped this year.”

He added that the latest round of rates combined with “forever-going up” rents “finished a considerable amount of businesses in the Belmont area off ”.

Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins introduced a cap on rate rises of 2 per cent for the 2017-18 financial year.

But Geelong investor Bill Votsaris said that meant the burden of budget shortfalls would fall on local business.

“People don’t understand that only applies to residential rates,” he said.

“All its done is allowed councils to shift the rates increases from residential to businesses.

“The rates are out of control and the services are dwindling.”

Mr Votsaris said local businesses payed “four times” the rates of other municipalities.

“Geelong has one of the highest commercial rates in all of Australia. Our starting point already is too high.”

Greater Geelong needed to consider commercial rates if it was serious about local employment, Mr Votsaris said.

City Hall finance director Joanne Moloney said these matters had been raised through the budget submission process.

Geelong’s Administrators will hear the submissions and discuss them at the Budget Submission Panel Hearing meeting next Tuesday, 30 May.

Thieves have stolen a Bobcat excavator and a trailer worth a combined $40,000 during a raid at Waurn Ponds, according to police.

The burglars struck between 1.30pm and 2.15pm Saturday before the stolen items were seen passing through Ceres then Bannockburn on the way to Ballarat, police said.

“It’s not an enormous group of volunteers, but they have showed a great commitment to dignity therapy, which is a really time-intensive therapeutic intervention.”

Geelong palliative care volunteers have won state recognition for their work preserving dying patients’ treasured memories.

The State Government this week awarded a Barwon Health program where 14 volunteers recorded the patients’ life stories and messages for loved ones.

Dignity Therapy Volunteer Team’s Tonya Court said it was humbling and gratifying to become connected to strangers through such a unique and bittersweet experience.

In the case of Corio MP Richard Marles, maybe it’s when the step up involves forsaking the lush beauty of tropical islands for the war-torn landscapes of the Middle East.

Federal Labor’s shadow defence minister managed to keep smiling this week in images from a recent trip to Iraq and Afghanistan, where he donned flak jacket and helmet to meet diggers on scorched-earth wastelands.

At least it looked like he was smiling.

It sure was a long way from his Gillard government gig as parliamentary secretary for South Pacific Affairs, when his itinerary sounded more Love Boat than Black Hawk Down.

Back then, the man himself once revealed, the biggest threat during tours of duty was obesity from the roast-pig hospitality of islander hosts.

At least now he can walk it off in the desert!

A stone’s throw away at City Hall, council administrators chair Kathy Alexander was a notable absentee from this week’s big monthly meeting (it’s easy to notice a missing admin-

istrator when there’s only three of them).

With controversial decisions aplenty up for voting, not least the fate of two Geelong libraries, Laurinda Gardner and Peter Dorling were left to make the fraught official calls before a packed, simmering public gallery.

So where was the chair? On “leave”, was the answer from City Hall.

Fair enough, she’s been in the job for 12 months - on an annual pay packet of more than $250,000 for two days a week.

Nice work if you can get it!

Meanwhile, a familiar face actually at work last Friday certainly made a good impression.

Veteran sports broadcaster Bruce McAvaney was preparing for a busy night at Simonds Stadium, with the opening of the new stand and the big match between Geelong and the reigning-premier Bulldogs.

Rushing through Simonds Stadium to make it in time for the cameras, Bruce was asked to stop for a photo with fans.

He happily obliged, smiling all the while before rushing off again for his national broadcast.

And what did his fans say? Speeeecial!

By Luke Voogt Campaigners have ridiculed council administrators’ decision to delay closuring Highton and Chilwell libraries.

About 200 people protesting the closures attended Tuesday night's council meeting, where the three administrators decided to keep both libraries open an extra couple of months before closing them simultaneously with Barwon Heads' library.

All three will shut at the end of September, a month before the administrators leave and voters elect a new council.

The administrators decided to extend the closure date until 30 September for “community consultation” due to “strong public feedback”.

The decision failed to impress protesters fighting to keep the libraries open permanently.

“All we got was a stay of execution from the

two dictators who told us their vision for our libraries,” said Lynne Dowling, who attended this week's meeting.

“We’re not giving up.”

Former councillor Ron Nelson described the consultation as “token” gesture to placate protesters while depicting the administrators as listening to the community.

The “hangman’s noose” still hung over the libraries regardless, he said.

“I guess the administrators needed to save face. This new council is all about consultation and that certainly hasn’t occurred in this case.”

Highton Library met all its key performance indicators, such as visits per hour, Mr Nelson said.

“I think (the administrators) needed to listen to the community before they even decided to close this library. Democracy is gone for the people of Geelong.”

Mr Nelson was one of the 13 councillors who the Andrews Government sacked in April 2016,

alleging a "culture of bullying" at City Hall.

Acting chair of administrators Laurinda Gardner told a packed gallery at City Hall that the Highton and Chilwell libraries would now close the same day as Barwon Heads Library.

“We’ve listened very carefully to the many passionate people who attended and spoke at tonight’s meeting and taken on board the three petitions containing several thousand signatures,” she said.

But the administrators' decision to adopt a new model of library service was still in the “best interests” of greater Geelong, Ms Gardner said.

City Hall expects the three closures to save at least $300,000 a year, which could use to help Geelong Regional Library Corporation meet rising costs.

City Hall has identified the three libraries as poor performers on measures including visitation, loans and internet sessions.

Geelong’s imam has expressed his grief for his former home city Manchester following a suicide attack which killed 22 people, including children.

Shaykh Mohammad Ramzan lived in Manchester for 15 years and raised his daughter and two sons in the English city.

“We’ve been following the news very closely,” he said. “My children were very upset.”

At 10.30pm Monday (local time) a man Imam Mohammad detonated an impro- Ramzan vised explosive device as crowds left an Ariana Grande concert at Manchester Arena.

British police later identified the man as Salman Abed, a 22-year-old Briton of Libyan descent, and declared the bombing a terrorist attack.

Mr Ramzan condemned terrorists who committed crimes in the name of Islam.

“They are not Muslim and have nothing to do with Islam,” he said. “They are trying to hijack the message of peace and love in Islam.”

It’s not the first the first time Mr Ramzan, who became an Australian citizen in October 2016, has spoken out against terrorism inspired by Muslim fundamentalism. In 2014 he described Islamic State forces (ISIS) as terrorists.

“Islam has nothing to do with killing human beings, taking children,” he told the Indy.

But the policy defines regional communities as outside “150 kilometres by road of Canberra or the capital city of a state”, which would rule out Geelong for its proximity to Melbourne.

“We recognise that Geelong is not a regional city. We believe they need to look again at the policy parameters regarding second cities,” Ms Casson said The committee’s Winning From Second report highlighted Geelong’s potential as global centre of excellence for social insurance, she said.

“This is a specialisation that’s unique to Geelong and sets Victoria’s second largest city apart from every other regional city in the country.”

Comcare, which insures public servants, has 645 employees across Australia but a Canberra source told the Indy that relocating Comcare “wouldn’t even bring close to 700 jobs to Geelong”.

Comcare chief executive officer Jennifer Taylor said neither the Commonwealth nor lobby groups had approached the organisation about the proposal.

“Comcare’s workers’ compensation operations are based largely in Canberra and Melbourne where the majority of Commonwealth employers and employees are located.”

Committee for Geelong chief Rebecca Casson said moving Comcare could create 700 jobs and “bring millions of dollars” to Geelong.

MP: City has no call to fly the flag

By Luke Voogt Flying the Rainbow Flag at City Hall year-round would be an inappropriate use of ratepayers’ money, according to a Geelong MP. “The argument is not whether you believe in marriage equality or not,” Simon Ramsay said.

“Some councils seem obsessed with using public property and ratepayers money to pursue an agenda that is not the responsibility of local government.”

The West Victoria MP made the remarks after marriage equality advocates called on Greater

Geelong to keep the flag year-round in last week’s Indy.

City Hall had raised the flag on 17 May for an international day against homophobia.

In parliament on Thursday Mr Ramsay made a speech slamming the Surf Coast Shire’s recent turmoil over the flag while there were “more pressing matters”.

“This was done with little consultation with the community and even less with the councillors who are tied in their support.”

Mr Ramsay said he didn’t have a view “either way” on marriage equality.

“I don’t see it as being a significant issue.”

Geelong priest Father Kevin Dillon said councils were better suited “tuning into areas which they are responsible for and can make changes.”

“I’m not a great fan of council getting involved in political and social issues, those levels of law which involve state and federal law.”

“I don’t necessarily want the council to go down the track of literally raising the flag where there are a variety of community perspectives.”

Fr Dillon said it would be “inappropriate” for the council to raise a flag for other political issues like “better funding for catholic schools”.

He said he supported civil unions between same sex couples but not marriage.

“But I think the people pushing for it have every right to do so and good on them for doing so.”

Surf Coast Shire councillors voted to raise the rainbow flag on 26 April but mayor Brian McKiterick used his casting vote to carry a motion to take it down on Tuesday.

Councillor Rose Hodge lodged a notice of recession deferring the decision until the shire’s 27 June meeting.

Harmony’s sweet with Perth places Geelong Harmony won second place in their division at a national singing competition in Perth on Sunday.

The chorus placed second in the medium division of Sweet Adelines Australia, and sixth overall in the all-female competition.

Musical Director Alex Morris was proud of his singers’ “nuanced performance”.

“This is a brilliant result for us given that, with 33 singers on stage, we’re one of the smaller choruses in the medium sized division.”

The Geelong ladies belted out songs like There Goes My Heart and Never Say Never Again.

“This year we wowed the audiences and judges with one of our most musical performances to date,” Mr Morris said.

“Geelong Harmony always gets an enthusiastic reception at our national competitions as we are renowned across Australia for our genuine and energetic performances.”

Singer Helen Booth was thrilled with the result.

“We were really happy for Alex because he put in so much work for us,” she said. “It was wonderful to perform but it was also wonderful to watch all the other choirs and quartets. There are some very talented women around Australia.”

Money pours in as a tribute to Lou

By Luke Voogt Donors have raised more than $20,000 in just two weeks for a Geelong charity in honour of the late Collingwood football legend Lou Richards.

Belmont’s Ange Liston-McCaughly said the Richards family had “catapulted“ Type 1 Foundation into the “national spotlight” by urging people to donate instead of sending flowers.

“We’ve had some really big donations come in - it’s been massive to be on TV.” Ange’s daughter Lila, 13, has Type 1 diabetes and sees the same paediatrician as Richards’ great-grandson Jack.

“Lucy (Jack’s mother) and I will probably end up working quite closely,” she said.

Geelong football great and TV personality Sam Newman raised $10,000 of the figure when he nailed a bullseye in a Footy Show tribute to Lou’s Handball.

Ange missed the segment but said the Richards family sent her a video of them watching it.

“They were all going crazy,” she said.

She went to the funeral of the Collingwood legend where she heard of his generosity. She said the Type 1 Foundation would help carry on his legacy.

“He was a huge charity man,” she said.

Cats supporters Ange and Lila collected money at the MCG when Collingwood faced Hawthorn, which included a tribute to Richards.

“We had to barrack for them which was a bit weird,” she said. “My husband barracks for Hawthorn, so it’s kind of funny.”

In December 2013, Lila fell severely ill on a family holiday in Queensland.

She had been sick a few months before but doctors did not diagnose her condition until she ended up in a Gold Coast Hospital.

“They said she had diabetes and was an hour (away from) falling into a coma,” Ange said.

“It was a very scary time. When Lila was diagnosed, there was no support.”

In 2016 she ran in 10 marathons, in every state in Australia, to get the foundation off the ground.

“There’s a lot of money being put in to research in care,” she said.

“But there are a lot of people living with Type 1

diabetes who need support - (the foundation has) just grown from there.”

Lila has an expensive insulin pump connected to her stomach, counts carbs in everything she eats and checks her blood sugar many times daily.

Her family also checks on her and worries about long-term complications like blindness, kidney disease and heart failure.

“Type 1 diabetes is very much a family disease,” Ange said.

Ange planned to spend a large portion of the donations on an online module to educate teachers on diabetes. She said the module would cost $10,000 to introduce to Victoria alone.

“We want to make that a national thing, so every teacher knows how to treat a child with diabetes.”

Coles spends up, employs 80 more Coles has created 80 jobs at Drysdale after opening a new supermarket as part of a $150 million investment program in the Geelong region.

Coles opened the Drysdale store on Wednesday, adding to new supermarkets built at Waurn Ponds, Lara and Torquay over the past four years.

The company has invested more than $150 million in the four stores and refurbishments at Corio and Belmont.

In addition to the 80 new recruits, the Drysdale supermarket would employ 70 team members transferred from other stores in the area, bringing the total team to 150, Coles said.

The new market-style supermarket featured “an in-store bakery with freshly-baked bread, a continental delicatessen with a large selection of cheese, fresh seafood and a meat counter with a slice on request service”, the company said.

“Drysdale shoppers will also be able to enjoy a

self-service olive bar, a scoop-and-weigh station and an extensive fresh produce area with fruit and vegetables displayed on ice.”

Store manager Jared Bond said he was excited to introduce the Drysdale supermarket, which would provide the community with benefits other than just employment and choice.

“Coles is heavily invested in the local community and we’re committed to supporting a range of causes close to the hearts of customers and team members,” he said.

“We’ll provide food at the Drysdale Primary School’s Mini Mudder fund-raising event later this month and team members will pitch in at the school next month when they build a new vegie patch at the school so kids can enjoy wholesome, healthy snacks. The team is eager to extend service beyond the checkout and excited to open our doors.”

TAC backs women after axing Cats A Torquay women’s soccer club has signed a “major” partnership with the TAC 10 weeks after it dumped a $250,000 Cats sponsorship over skipper Joel Selwood’s lost licence.

The deal is the TAC’s second arrangement with women’s sport since Selwood was caught driving at 127km/h in February. A week later the TAC announced a partnership with the AFL’s under-18 women’s competition.

The new deal with Torquay-based Galaxy United FC would promote road safety among drivers aged 18 to 25, said TAC boss Joe Calafiore.

Soccer was popular among the age group, which also accounted for the most road fatalities in Victoria, Mr Calafiore said.

“The TAC’s partnership with Galaxy United FC is about creating road safety awareness and conversations among young Victorians and their families,” he said.

“It’s important we keep finding new ways to engage with young drivers about risk-taking and help them get the experience they need to be safe on our roads.”

Under the sponsorship deal, TAC’s logo appears on Galaxy United uniforms and at its home ground in Torquay’s Banyul Warri Reserve. Galaxy United is Victoria’s only regional club in Women’s National Premier League.

The TAC officially dumped its 11-year deal with the Cats in early March after Selwood lost his licence for a month. Other player driving indiscretions had strained the sponsorship relationship before Selwood.

“In January 2015, the GFC (Cats) stated publicly that in the event of any further serious incidents, the partnership would be relinquished, and the TAC respects the club’s integrity,” the TAC said in a statement announcing the split.

Geelong could have to wait 38 years for a major container port on its doorstep, following recommendations from Infrastructure Victoria. The authority recommended Bay West, a proposed port near Werribee, over the Port of Hastings in Melbourne’s south-east, in a statement on Tuesday.

But Infrastructure Victoria chief Michael Masson said the Port of Melbourne would not reach its capacity of eight million standard containers until 2055.

Mr Masson said moving container trade to Bay West would make more “economic, social and urban planning sense” than Hastings.

“Bay West has strong transport, land use, environmental and amenity advantages when compared to Hastings.”

At $6.42 billion the Bay West option would be half the estimated $12.886 billion cost for Hastings, according to a Infrastructure Victoria report.

Geelong Chamber of Commerce welcomed the authority’s endorsement for Bay West.

Chamber chief executive officer Bernadette Uzelac said Bay West would generate significant investment and “hundreds - potentially thousands - of jobs" in the Geelong region.

But the State Government has declined to commit to either option and would respond in its Freight Strategy later this year, Transport Minister Luke Donnellan said.

The Indy reported plans to build a second port near Geelong in 2010 after the Brumby Labor government had previously ruled it out.

In 2011, then Minister for Ports Dennis Napthine floated the idea of a port at Point Wilson, east of Avalon Airport, as an “option”. But the Coalition government decided on Hastings as its preferred location despite a Western Transport Study identifying Bay West as the best option.

In 2012, then Opposition Leader Daniel Andrews announced his support for Bay West.

Labor promised to refer the question of location to Infrastructure Victoria during the 2014 election but talked up Bay West’s prospects.

Stolen watches may be in circulation Police have released images in their hunt for $6500 of stolen watches and clothes which they believe are circulating in Geelong.

Burglars stole the watches earlier this month from a surf shop in The Terrace, Ocean Grove.

According to investigators, an unknown number of offenders smashed the front display window of the store at 2am on 1 May. They stole distinctive Rip Curl and Nixon brand watches and surf brand clothing valued at $6500.

Letters Married with children They campaign for same sex marriage; got frontpage billing in last week’s Indy.

Having read the arguments for “marriage equality”, I wonder whether advocates really understand the significance of the institution. Marriage is not primarily about love but rather procreation and nurturing children. Marriage’s meaning would be destroyed if marriage was extended to same-sex couples. Marriage can only ever be between a man and a woman. If two people of the same sex want to formalise their relationship, fine, they can give it any name they like but not marriage.

When surveys about “marriage equality” include the care and raising of children 70 per cent vote against “marriage equality”. The role of defining marriage and enacting laws pertaining to marriage is the prerogative of Federal Government, so it would be reckless of City Hall to cause dissension within the community by publicly supporting one side openly. It’s not the role of City Hall to act as a social change agent, but to attend to issues affecting the interests of ratepayers, such as waste collection and the provision of services like libraries.

Keep libraries, cut staff If council has such urgency about saving a few hundred thousand dollars by closing libraries (Geelong Indy, 19 May), then why is it not of a mind to cull a few highly paid staff? Of the $300 million-plus that council harvests each year, over $125 million is spent on wages and salaries. Given that locals are generally miffed about a lack of services they want, like Chilwell Library, a culling of some seemingly moreuseless positions at council, like ‘community life manager’, might be in order.

CFA volunteers across the state. The reforms will not change the way CFA volunteers operate or impact on the valuable service they provide to the community. Our staff will also continue to be an important part of CFA now and into the future. The changes will see more than $100 million invested into CFA, which will open up a range of opportunities. The funding includes: a new $56 million CFA Support Fund to strengthen volunteer recruitment, retention and training options, expand brigade support and develop leadership; and a $44 million CFA capital expenditure program. As well, the changes will give volunteer firefighters access to compensation for cancers contracted in the line of duty.

CFA will always be there to protect the community, and this will not change. I appreciate that the changes are big, but they represent great opportunities for CFA in Geelong and surrounding areas. In coming days and weeks, key CFA personnel will visit brigades across Victoria to talk to staff and volunteers about the reforms.

The safety of the community and our members is our number-one priority. Our capacity to do so will be enhanced, and CFA’s ability to protect lives and property across the state will be strengthened.

Renewables first, fracking never I was alarmed by Alan Barron’s advocacy for fracking to be included in the mix of sustainable energy production options (Letters, 5 May).

Doesn’t he realise fracking is one of the most harmful and polluting methods of gas extraction, with capacity to destroy millions of hectares of prime agricultural farmland and to permanently poison underground aquifers and the water table.

The process is unreliable, unsafe and uses carcinogenic chemicals that stay in the water and soils.

Fracking is only on the table because Federal Government has allowed energy companies to exploit Australia’s readily available gas reserves and to export LNG ad infinitum with total disregard for domestic gas supplies. Australia is already an arid country, so why allow this filthy industry to jeopardise our food and water security? Australia has many alternatives to solving its so-called energy crisis. The first should be a massive infrastructure upgrade of the national electricity grid, so it can accommodate and utilise all forms of power generation.

Using renewable, non-polluting forms of energy

first, such as solar, wind and hydro-electric, would surely preserve our non-renewable reserves. Experimental technologies could be improved and added, such as wave-power generation. As last resort we could keep several clean-coal power stations on standby. We could also revisit nuclear power, which has had numerous technological advances and improvements both in flux density capacity and storage of nuclear waste. But utilising the safer, free, non-polluting, renewable and sustainable options must be paramount for the sake of posterity.

Putting regional funding on track Aside from federal-state rail funding bickering, oversights and anomalies, there are positives.

While V/Line’s Warrnambool-return services regularly wait 15 to 20 minutes for a Southern Cross green light to proceed prior to Waurn Ponds, funding for a Geelong-Waurn Ponds rail duplication joins another dot. Additional Andrews Government passenger rail-stock orders and Chinese investment means jobs and surety for manufacturers, yet approximately $1.8 billion in upgrades of the GeelongMelbourne line can’t top the commute time of early 1950s steam-train services.

Furthermore, while a glaring need exists to transform North Geelong Railway Station into an integral rail hub precinct, award-winning Southern Cross station enables convenient proximity and public transport linkages to a sports, commercial, hospitality and arts smorgasbord of the highest order.

Conversely, Mildura is a tourism gem and food bowl centrepiece, but does not have a direct passenger rail service but a $100 million upgrade of the Warrnambool line remains on the table.

As an aside, positive proof of what’s possible even in the bush when city-centric governance acknowledges the importance of primary producers and allied decentralisation is the rate of knots at which the duplication of the Princes Highway between Colac and Winchelsea, with $181.7 million each from the Turnbull and Andrews governments, is proceeding.

Serenading Lane hits Celtic note

By Luke Voogt Folk music isn’t Ari Lane’s “cup of tea”, but that hasn’t stopped her and the Drowsy Maggies serenading crowds at the National Celtic Festival.

The quartet has an eclectic mix of pop, indie and rock tastes which they’ve mixed with their Celtic sound.

“It makes our music sound different to everybody else,” Lane said.

She and fellow Ballarat singer-guitarist Rhiannon McArthur met Campertown bass player Jordy Hicky and Adelaide violinist Caity Brennan at a music camp in 2015.

“Each year they try to put together a band,” Lane said. “They put them all together in a room and make them practise for a week.”

The quartet named themselves after a classic Irish tune, and Lane and McArthur combined their song-writing talents for an original, 13-track album.

They won an award for young musicians at the 2016 National Folk Festival and took out Best Celtic Act at the same festival last month.

“It went better than we expected,” Lane said.

The 21-year-old now lives in Daylesford, and is chasing her rock dream in her own three-piece band. She plays guitar, but her natural talent is percussion.

“I’m like a really bad Dave Grohl,” she said.

“I’m a front house supervisor, but I’m a wannabe rock star, so I’m trying to balance that.”

The sweet-sounding quartet played at the festival in 2016, including a show aboard the tall ship Enterprize.

“It’s one of the main festivals we play at,” Lane said. “We got to play on the pirate ship which was one of the most challenging gigs we’ve done.

“It was a pretty smooth ride, but it was also a freezing cold, windy day. It was very intimate - everyone had to get in really close to hear because it

Lane loved jamming with other bands during late-night pub sessions.

“It’s really fun going away for a weekend,” she said, “it’s like going to another world.

“There’s lots of different music which I haven’t really heard before. And I like the crepes - they’re delicious.”

Portarlington’s National Celtic Festival showcases a huge line-up of Celtic bands and artists from Scotland, Wales, Ireland and the US.

The festival features Australian acts Eric Bogle, The Bushwackers, Melbourne Scottish Fiddle Club and Claymore.

On Sunday night, the festival will stage ‘Lantunda’ - an inaugural community arts project of shadow puppetry, stories and music.

Geelong Scottish Dance will bring some local flavour to the event while Portarlington Harmonica Band will take on the challenging gig aboard the Enterprize.

The festival includes countless dance, theatre,

comedy and literature acts, and the Trail of Celtic Tales for children.

Competitions on the weekend include bagpipes, the Scottish Highland dance and the Portarlington Limerick Competition.

The Celtic market features stalls selling an array of crafts, produce, beverages and, of course, Guinness.

Celtic martial artists will visit, while resident Vikings will settle in for a weekend of wrestling, animal hide curing and iron mongering.

A brand new gig for Stingers cop Ian Stenlake, best known as Constable Oscar Stone in Australian police drama Stingers, will sing his acting career to life in Geelong next week.

Each song comes with a colourful tale from his past, the 47-year-old said.

“I talk about my life and how I became an actor, where I come from and where I’m heading.”

Stenlake spoke to the Indy Monday after winning a lead role in the latest stage version of Mamma Mia. He will play ‘Sam’, who Pierce Brosnan played in the original film, and start rehearsals in October.

“It’s fantastic - I remember seeing the first Australian production of Mamma Mia in its opening night in Sydney," he said.

“Rarely as an actor can I look forward to the next 18 months, and think ‘it’s going to be lashings of fun’.”

Stenlake's career began during a trip to Rome when he was convinced to become an extra in a movie that was being filmed there - as a waiter in the Godfather III. He acted in Stingers for four years before transitioning onto stage with a production of Cabaret in 2003.

He worked with actual police to learn skills like shooting and weapon handling.

“I got a motorbike licence out of that job,” he said. “I even remember doing archery at one point.”

But at the time his acting resume was “a bit empty” with just Stingers on it.

“It read very quickly, it was just one job and I thought ‘I need to get more experience here’,” he said.

“Musical theatre was a little bit like an inch that hadn’t been scratched. I wanted to do some things I had turned my back on as teenager due to peer pressure.”

Stenlake took singing lessons at age 30 as he finished working on Stingers.

“I had the basis for a decent voice, but I didn’t have the training,” he said.

“I was doing singing practice in the car all the way to and from work for the last 22 episodes.”

Stenlake will tell his life story of “dangerous situations“ and “new beginnings" through music theatre classics like Falling and You Raise Me Up. “There’s a little bit of participation,” he said.

He will also perform the Tom Jones classic It’s Not Unusual from his favourite play Georgy Girl.

“It’s an unusual song to be able to sing in a musical-theatre-based concert,” he said.

“It’s literally a pop song they were able to get into the play because it was a dream sequence.

Once you go into the world of dreams you can do anything.”

Stenlake will return to Geelong Performing Arts Centre’s Musical Mornings next Wednesday and Thursday at 10.30am.

“I have a great connection with Geelong, and I look forward to getting back there,” he said.

Stenlake has won best male leading artist in a leading role twice at the Green Room Awards, Melbourne's premier performing arts awards.

He won for his role as Vernon Gersch in They're Playing Our song in 2003 and as Curly in Oklahoma! in 2005.

MAMMA MIA: Tribute act BABBA will be back in Geelong Saturday.

Tribute living on nals - BABBA is still going with numerous Australian and international tours under its belt.

“At our peak, we were doing 180 shows a year,” Ingvarson said.

The band was a regular fixture in Geelong in its early days, he said.

“At one stage we’d play down there every Friday.”

Often the gigs wouldn’t finish until 3am and the band wouldn’t get back to Melbourne until 5am, he said.

BABBA mimics the originals down to their Swedish stage-accents, Ingvarson said.

“We feel like we do justice to their songs by playing them correctly with the right harmonies in the right places.”

For Ingvarson, one of BABBA’s biggest accolades was Molly Meldrum’s description of the band as “dare I say it, as good as Abba”.

“He played such a huge role in getting ABBA known in Australia,” he said.

Ingvarson would go on to marry BABBA’s original Frida, who played with the band for 13 years.

Unlike the real Frida and Benny, they’re still together with three children.

The reincarnated Benny, Bjorn, Agnetha and Frida will rock the Sphinx Saturday with all of ABBA’s classic hits.

Michael Ingvarson has played as Benny Andersson for 23 years in one of Australia’s most famous tribute acts, BABBA. “And we’re not sick of playing him,” he told the Indy.

The iconic ABBA cover band will again return to Geelong Saturday after a recent gig with the Canberra Symphony Orchestra in front of 15,000 people.

It rained at the three-quarter mark of the concert at Canberra Park, but that didn’t stop the saturated crowd from dancing, Ingvarson said.

“It was awesome.”

Ingvarson has played in BABBA most of his adult life, while James McDonald, “Bjorn Ulvaeus,” and drummer Paul Edsall have also been in the band since day one.

The band started not long after Ingvarson finished studying music at the University of Melbourne.

“I got a call from a girl I went to uni with,” he said.

They and three others got together for a Battle of the Bands competition at the Royal Derby Hotel in Fitzroy.

“There were 450 people at our first gig,” he said.

“It got a pretty good response - we thought well ... we’ll do this for a while.”

If the reviews on social media are anything to go by, Sakuratei Japanese Cuisine in Manifold Heights is a gem.

The addition to Geelong West’s culinary culture has been reviewed as one of the best Japanese restaurants outside Japan.

Cop bares emotional toll at clinic When “people expect you to be superhuman” it can take its toll, says a Geelong police officer.

“In a way, you buy into their notion and you can fix anything because you do to an extent,” she says.

“The hard thing is when you believe you’re strong enough to deal with anything, the emotional toll of many and varied traumatic incidents over a sustained period can bring it all undone.

“You realise that you’re not superhuman, and suddenly it all falls apart.”

The officer, who wishes to remain anonymous, suffers from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

“I felt weak,” she says, “you feel guilty because you weren’t strong enough. You feel you have let

the community down, as well as your colleagues and your family.

“Many friends tell me they don’t know how I do my job - I can’t anymore. The memories and visions will never leave me. They are a part of me, they torment me.”

But thanks to a new partnership with Worksafe, The Geelong Clinic is now offering PTSD treatment to first responders - like the policewoman.

“My treatment at The Geelong Clinic has been fundamental in starting to rediscover a lot of what I have lost,” she says.

“I’m not ‘fixed’ but I’m on the path towards recovery. I don’t feel weak anymore, and I know now that I’m not alone.”

First responders are the first to arrive at an emergency, and deal with crashes, death, violence and other circumstances well outside of ‘everyday life’.

The policewoman found herself suffering from sleeplessness and round-the-clock anxiety, and wanted to withdraw from friends.

But the xlinic’s 12-week PTSD program is helping her deal with her symptoms.

“When you begin to understand how your brain works, it takes some of the fear out of the PTSD symptoms,” she says.

The PTSD program is offered to veterans, and is funded by the Department of Veteran Affairs.

Serving ADF Personnel are also eligible to re-

ceive treatment, and the program is accredited by ACHS and endorsed by Phoenix Australia, the Centre for Post Traumatic Mental Health.

The program involves anxiety and anger management, trauma-focused cognitive behaviour therapy, drug and alcohol education, and individual and group therapy.

“It also gives me the ability to articulate what I am feeling and experiencing,” the policewoman says.

“The strength of the bond formed with this PTSD group at the Geelong Clinic is enormous.

We have bared our souls to each other, shared our stories and our fears.”

“We’ve gotten away from being traditional butchers - although we still have all your steaks, chops, minces and traditional cuts.”

Cut Above has tapped into a different market with its quick and easy meal solutions.

The butcher has created a range of pastries and meals for people on the go, with the freshness and flavour of homemade food.

“You can go home, chuck them in the oven and prepare a few things but that’s about it,” Daniel says.

“We work to that 30-minute bracket for cooking.”

The butcher prepares ready-to-go meals including chicken pizza pockets, Mediterranean lamb parcels, chicken enchiladas and butter chicken.

“We make everything on site,” Daniel says.

And don’t forget sausage rolls made from Cut Above’s award-winning Bonza Burger mince, which is choc-full of carrot, red onion, cheese and beetroot.

The Bonza won Australian Meat Industry Council’s best burger in Victoria and runner-up in Australia in February.

It was “good for promotion” but the popular burgers sell themselves, Daniel says.

“Even now getting to winter we would sell 3000 a week so they just love the product.”

Daniel just missed out on being the best in the ‘Butcher Wars’ at this year’s Meatstock.

“There was a point between me and the guy Adelaide - that’s how close it was,” the 37-year-old says.

In a test of speed, creativity and showmanship, Daniel had 30 minutes to process a leg of lamb and side of pork by hand into products.

“I made 13 products and the winner made seven,” he says.

Daniel started as a butcher at 15 and is now

passing on his knowledge to the new generation.

SPORT New venue does us proud as Cats fans make stand

By Luke Voogt Geelong fans celebrated the new Charles Brownlow Stand with the biggest regular-season crowd at Simonds Stadium in two decades and a Cats triumph Friday night.

But the 30,275-strong crowd failed to test the ground’s new 36,000-person capacity, with a wet forecast keeping some fans at home.

The Indy caught up with veteran commentator Bruce McAvaney, who agreed to greet some Cats fans despite being due for a TV segment.

The “gentlemanly” footy host posed with Steve Barry and his family, who were thrilled with the new Charles Brownlow stand.

“It’s an amazing stand with good facilities,” Steve said.

Cats fan of 67 years, Christine Ronaldson, was similarly impressed with the new stand.

“I’ve been here since 3pm this afternoon,” she said.

Christine remembered coming to the ground when the first three rows of the stand were wooden seats.

“I would race in and get the first row,” she said.

“Except for one day when Hawthorn supporters got in there before me and jumped the fence. I wasn’t happy, I’ll tell you that.“ The 72-year-old was enjoying a cheeky wine or two in the stand’s new social rooms, despite a minor hiccup earlier in the day.

“The scanner didn’t work when we tried to get in,” she said. “But they’ve really looked after us.”

For Newcomb’s Marion, 76, and Keith Goodwin, 81, it was “never too late” to get to a Cats game.

“This is the first game we’ve been to,” Marion said. “We’ve just taken out memberships this year.”

The couple, formerly of Ballarat, had watched their beloved Cats on TV for 50 years, but were thrilled to see their first game live.

“The atmosphere is so good,” Marion said.

And the Goodwins were in for a treat with Geelong prevailing by 23 points, despite a dominant third quarter by the Bulldogs.

Geelong put on a relentless display of pressure which saw them record a club record of 134 tackles, after dismal tackling performances earlier in the season.

Politicians, dignitaries and Geelong celebrities gathered in the new stand’s Pivot and Presidents rooms for functions throughout the night.

Geelong was scheduled to play Port Adelaide in a consecutive Thursday night home-ground match at Simonds Stadium after the Indy went to press.

Needed mood lift for Warriors after eleventh-hour win

No better way to get self-belief back into a squad than to do it with a last minute sealer in front of your faithful.

With a deserved 1-0 nil win under their belt last weekend against Pascoe Vale, North Geelong Warriors can head into their next challenge with a lift in mood.

Their challenge comes in the form of Bentleigh Greens, who many at North Geelong will say undeservedly walked away with three points in the reverse fixture when the Warriors led for much of the match and missed a penalty that ended up hurting deeply.

Bentleigh will host Friday night’s match after a five-match period of two wins, two draws and a loss. With the likes of Matthew Thurtell prodding nine goals away this half of the season as well as ever-reliable Chris Oldfield in goals, the task ahead for the Warriors will be to create a battle and not allow the Greens to enjoy any free flowing

football that they prefer.

Resilient and persistent was the best way to describe the performance of the Warriors in the win over Pascoe Vale, and it will take many more of those to climb up the ladder.

In the first half, the Warriors were unlucky to not receive a penalty for a handball call however the referee waved play on and in a see sawing affair neither side were able to create cutting edge chances.

Requiring a change to keep the side in the contest and requiring an injection of pace Micky Colina introduced Michael Anderson and Nicholas Jurcic.

It was the latter who paid the faith in the gaffer by charging down a switch in play to push forward, cutting in on the edge of the box to cross perfectly for the charging Andrew Doig who headed the ball under Andrew Pavlidis to seal the match in the 95th minute.

With the relief that they can do it, now it’s a question of how many more can they win?

Anglers land good catches ON THE BITE Chris Pitman Anglers crossed paths with Australian salmon to just over 1kg while casting around Geelong’s waterfront Carousel area.

Trelly’s Fishing World Geelong Adam Van Der Lugt cast soft plastics on 1/8oz jig heads during a morning walk around the waterfront, snagging some impressive salmon. At times, the salmon put on a show, erupting on the surface in feeding frenzies.

Pinkie snapper and flathead were also taken from the waterfront.

Plenty of garfish were available from the rocks at Limeburner’s Point boat ramp and even further round to the grammar school lagoon.

Squid kept anglers busy around the Bellarine Peninsula, with St Leonards through to Queenscliff giving specimens just over 1kg.

Gummy sharks were boated on fresh squid strips in 20m off St Leonards. Whiting were on the chew all along the section of water labelled Bourke Street, with the evenings producing bag-limit captures.

Queenscliff Harbour was again a great land-based anglers option for silver trevally on soft plastics.

Surf fishing really fired up with salmon, gummy shark and mulloway. Casting lures on a rising tide during the day was ideal for salmon to more than 2kg, while fresh salmon fillets or squid took gummies to 8kg and the odd school mulloway after dark.

The best local beaches were from Bancoora through to Jan Juc, with the run-in tide again fishing best.

Bluefin tuna began schooling in larger numbers down the coast. The 55m-to-65m line held the biggest numbers of fish, which averaged around 15kg.

Samaki Pacemakers in the 140D were great lures for the tuna, along with green skirted designs. Dolphin fish were even taken as a by-catch off Portland.

Freshwater fishos found trout with Wurdee Boluc, mostly rainbows to 1kg taken on spoon-type lures. The odd large redfin to 45cm was also banked.

Stony Creek Reservoir continued producing brown trout to just on 1kg. Anglers fishing all tactics caught fish, with fly anglers having a ball around the shallower margins.

Lake Purrumbete remained on fire for large numbers of redfin, although most anglers had their sights set on large brown trout.

Lake Bullen Merri was consistent for Chinook salmon and rainbow trout, with the odd brown taken too. All methods worked well, making Bullen Merri a great option for land-based fishing.

Next week should provide good fishing along Geelong’s waterfront for salmon, pinkie snapper and flathead, especially on soft plastics. Surf fishing should also be worthwhile, while freshwater anglers would do well to make the trip to Bullen Merri.
