Split draws fire The Victorian Government has vowed to separate volunteer and paid firefighters into two different authorities.

State Emergency Services Minister, James Merlino, announced on Friday 19 May that paid firefighters from the CFA and Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB) would move to the newly created Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV), leaving the CFA to continue as a volunteeronly organisation. “We’ll enshrine the CFA as a volunteer firefighting service under law and unite our career firefighters under one organisation,� Mr Merlino said.

The new FRV body will be responsible for fighting fires in Melbourne and major regional towns, bringing to-

gether career CFA members and MFB firefighters.

Volunteer CFA stations across the state will be unchanged under the new model, with the 1220 CFA brigades continuing to serve their communities.

The State Government also announced FRV will take over the areas currently covered by integrated stations, and boundaries will be redrawn by a new Fire District Review Panel.

The proposal has been met with criticism from the State Opposition and has divided CFA volunteers.

State Opposition Leader Matthew Guy has called the announcement part of a “political fix� that aims to “destroy the CFA�. “Victorians still ask that question why? Why is the State Government so

hell-bent on destroying the CFA?� Mr Guy said.

Mr Guy did acknowledge that $56.2 million for training and recruitment and $44 million for new stations is welcome funding for the organisation. “Yes, greater monies for the CFA is good news. Yes, presumptive rights legislation is a good step forward,� he said.

Of the 35 integrated stations that are to be affected by the changes, none are within the Yarra Ranges.

However, chief executive officer of Volunteer Fire Brigades Victoria (VFBV) Andrew Ford said the changes would damage the state’s capacity to provide surge capacity during major events such as the Black Saturday Fires.

Mr Merlino also hit back at the claims from the Opposition, and said that Mr Guy - in relation to the CFA could not be trusted. “Matthew Guy continues to say anything so he can keep using firefighters as political footballs ... one thing is clear: you can’t trust a single word Matthew Guy says.�

Garden status boost The National Rhododendron Garden in Olinda is set to become Australia’s newest botanical garden.

Member for Monbulk James Merlino on Friday 19 May announced the garden will undergo a name change and be formally gazetted as a botanic garden by Parks Victoria later this year.

The proposed changes recognise the significance of the extensive plant collections at the National Rhododendron Garden and enhance the Dandenong Ranges’ reputation as one of Victoria’s great garden destinations.

Mr Merlino encouraged the com-

munity to provide feedback.

“This is a great opportunity for the community to have a say in the future of the National Rhododendron Garden,” he said.

“I’d like to encourage the community to have a look at the information about the proposed name change and provide feedback to Parks Victoria.”

The National Rhododendron Garden is more diverse than the current name suggests.

In addition to Rhododendrons, the National Rhododendron Garden boasts a large collection of rare and exotic plants, including magnolias,

camellias, proteas and cherry trees.

It also features a collection of Southern Chinese plans, an alpine plant collection and examples of one of the world’s oldest and rarest trees - the Wollemi pine.

Many of these plants are endangered and are adapted to the coolclimate of the Dandenong Ranges.

Parks Victoria is proposing two alternate new names for the community to choose from as part of a public consultation process in May and June 2017.

The suggested options are Dandenong Ranges Botanic Garden and Olinda Botanic Garden.

Alternatively, members of the public can also suggest a new name.

The National Rhododendron Garden is one of seven diverse gardens of significant botanic, heritage and sightseeing value in the Dandenong Ranges managed by Parks Victoria.

The seven gardens cover 235ha and are located just 45 minutes east of Melbourne’s central business district.

Maiden Dreamtime game Football fans of all clubs from across the Yarra Ranges are being urged to support the inaugural Dreamtime in the Valley football match on Saturday 27 May. Police are urging members of the public to keep an eye out for a rare 1971 XY 500 Ford Falcon stolen from Monbulk between 30 April and 16 May. The vehicle was displaying number plates KWW416 at the time of the theft, and is highly sentimental to the owner.

Emerald school burglary Police are appealing for public assistance in relation to a burglary that occurred on Sunday 7 May 2017 at Emerald Secondary College.

It is believed the offender had broken into the college and taken a chainsaw, gardening tools and a computer.

The offender had then driven off in a green VT commodore.

Subway break-in On Sunday 21 May morning, just after midnight offenders have broken into and taken cash from the Belgrave Subway.

The offenders have damaged the front door on their entry.

Blanket cover for homeless Ferntree Gully’s Le Pine Funerals is calling on the community to show their support for those sleeping rough through donating their spare blankets to the business.

The blanket appeal will return this winter, in partnership with Anglicare Victoria, encouraging people to help warm up the streets.

Mark Osborne from Le Pine Funerals says the blanket appeal is a great way to raise awareness of the plight of homelessness, while supporting those less fortunate.

“As the nights get colder during the harsh winter months, many disadvantaged and homeless Australians are living without winter essentials,” he said.

“Having a comfortable and cosy blanket to keep you warm at night is unfortunately a luxury many people are unable to afford.”

Le Pine Funerals will be collecting blankets until the end of June, with all donations being distributed by Anglicare Victoria to those in the community feeling cold this winter.

Still time for hardy garden Winter has landed!

For me, this means it is time to search the drawers and wardrobes for colourful old school thermals and to don a hoodie or two.

Being wrapped up allows me to keep exploring the outdoors and attend to my gardening for three months of cold weather.

In winter, consistent rain and reduced sunlight hours provide favourable conditions for some edible vegetables and fascinating fungi.

If you haven’t planted your winter vegies yet, it is not too late!

Hardy greens, such as rainbow chard, silverbeet and kale can handle cold weather and will thrive after rain.

Unfortunately, all three of these

Unhealthy plants release pheromones which indicate to predatory insects that their surface is weak and therefore easier to attack.

To keep your produce organic, reduce insect damage by using a garlic and pepper spray every now and again.

Consistent rain also creates favourable conditions for annual weeds, which began to compete with your seedlings.

By hand weeding twice a week, you will keep on top of unwanted growth and will also find a couple of edible weeds for your stir-frys and salads.

Chickweed and fat hen are common European weeds found in the northern suburbs of Melbourne.

Chickweed is high in vitamin C and fat hen can be substituted for spinach.

Wildflowers provide seasonal displays in spring but in winter it is time for mushrooms to take the limelight.

Mushrooms are the fruiting body of fungi.

They appear above ground to give spores the best chance of spreading to an environment favourable to new growth.

Spores will spread with the aid of wind, pressure from water droplets or in the dung of native animals.

Fungi are an essential part of the forest ecosystem.

In association with plants, their underground hyphae (similar to the roots of plants) search for nutrients in the soil.

When they have stored food they

exchange with plants for carbohydrates.

Without an association with fungi most plants including acacias and eucalypts would not survive.

Native mushrooms come in a myriad of fantastic shapes, colours and textures.

Some have cone heads, some are bright blue while others have form of a bird’s nest or a table tennis bat.

Most mushrooms in a forest ecosystem grow on rotting wood so keep your eyes peeled to the ground.

Remember almost all mushrooms are not edible.

Unless you have expert advice and guidance in identifying edible mushrooms, it is strongly advised that you do not risk a potentially fatal ingestion.

Letters So much more than just firefighting WITH National Volunteer Week just passed, as a member of Volunteer Fire Brigades Victoria (VFBV), I would like to take the opportunity to thank our District 13’s volunteer CFA firefighters and those who support them.

The CFA’s 60,000 skilled volunteers comprise around 95 per cent of Victoria’s firefighting force.

This 24/7 volunteer capability is unique, setting the CFA apart from other fire services in the world.

CFA volunteers are from all walks of life and are highly trained to professional, nationally recognised standards.

This enables them to protect our communities in a wide range of situations, including urban and rural fires, motor vehicle accidents, rescues and hazardous material incidents.

Our district has around 2500 CFA volunteers in 46 brigades; three of these brigades com-

It is about community spirit and resilience and is proof volunteers can be relied upon to give tirelessly when others need it the most.

prise paid and volunteer firefighters stationed together and working seamlessly to protect the community.

Overall, we respond to over 4000 incidents per year, including urban and rural fires, motor vehicle accidents, rescues and hazardous material incidents.

We cover the Dandenong Ranges, Yarra Valley, Knox and Maroondah areas.

While last summer was relatively quiet, Victoria is one of the most fire prone in the world and this means the CFA needs to maintain a huge surge capacity to provide skilled resources, like ours, to combat Victoria’s multiple and large incidents.

Much of this volunteer surge capacity comes from CFA’s outer metropolitan and large regional town brigades, so it is vitally important to maintain a well-trained volunteer and integrated firefighting capability to protect Victoria.

I would like to sincerely thank the families and employers of our volunteers as being called to duty at any time often places a strain on those left behind.

Her light burned bright

By Bonny Burrows The family of the 27-year-old Gembrook woman who was tragically killed in a single-car accident just minutes away from home on 10 May have remembered the model as a free spirit with a heart of gold.

Erin Elphinstone was on her way home from “a really good day” in Melbourne when her black Suzuki sedan went down a steep embankment along Belgrave-Gembrook Road, Cockatoo, about 11pm.

Police had searched the area on Thursday 11 May but had initially failed to locate he vehicle because it was under thick bush.

She was found after a second search the next day.

Speaking from the family home on 16 May, almost a week after Erin’s death, Garry and Michelle Elphinstone described their daughter as “very spiritual” who lived life to the fullest and whose greatest fear was running out of time.

Her parents said she often spoke of the socalled 27 Club - a list of popular musicians, artists or actors that have died at age 27 - and had planned her funeral down to the finest of details.

She was independent, refused to settle down and wanted to do everything and anything.

She loved travelling, fashion, horses, motorbikes and skydiving.

She had no desire to marry or have children she just wanted to live, her family said.

“Her spirit knew her time wouldn’t be long,” Mr Elphinstone said.

“She packed a lot in 27 years - you can’t begrudge her for that.”

On the day of her death, Erin had kissed her mother goodbye before heading into the city for the day as she had done so many times before.

She donated blood in the morning before sharing her lunch with a homeless man.

In the evening, she had dinner with her best friend, Hayley Swanson.

Her sister Suzie had spoken to Erin on the phone about 4pm, unaware it would be the last time they would ever talk.

“She was really happy and said she had had a

“And knowing what she did that morning, it speaks volumes to the person Erin was.

“She was so kind.”

Erin, a business and marketing student at Swinburne University, was renowned for putting others before herself.

She would often stop on the side of the road to rescue injured animals and would drop everything to “make you feel special”.

Younger sister Jennifer said she idolised her big sister.

“She always looked so beautiful and had such a great sense of style,” Jennifer said.

“Whenever she gave a compliment, it made me feel like a million dollars because I looked up

to her so much.”

Mrs Elphinstone described losing her eldest daughter as like losing her best friend.

Their relationship was more a friendship than a typical mother-and-daughter relationship, she said.

“We used to sit down in the paddock and have many mother-daughter conversations. Not many mums get to share,” she said.

Mr Elphinstone said Erin would often joke to her mum that she should “try and be a mother instead of a sister”.

“They had a very special relationship,” he said.

After Erin’s death, her father posted on Facebook “I’ll look for you at night when the Gembrook stars are out. I’ll love and miss you forever”.

Despite the tragedy, the close-knit family, which also includes brother Bradley, is determined to keep Erin’s memory burning bright.

Each day, they have decided to have ‘an Erin moment’ - a sharing of stories to reflect on her life.

They will also celebrate her birthday each year by “doing something crazy”, just as Erin had done.

Suzie and Jennifer will also keep another tradition alive.

“We always used to go up to Belgrave to see a movie. We had a pact that we’d got see the Marvel movies. We must continue that - she’d like that,” Jennifer said.

Erin was farewelled at an emotional service last Friday.

Adventure at the top of the world 12352971-RC21-17

by World Challenge, nine Upwey High School students will spend an entire month living in remote Nepal.

While on the trip, teachers will take a hands-off approach and all the decision-making will be entirely left to the students. The expedition will test the students both mentally and physically, with students even embarking on a 200km hike through the Annapurna Sanctuary, which sits at 4130 metres above sea level.

They will also be helping local communities who are still recovering from the devastating earthquake that hit the region in 2015.

Part of that volunteer experience will be at Pokhara, an isolated township where they will teach English to Nepalese students and help restore the school grounds. Courtney Watson-Andrews is taking part in the expedition, and despite having never travelled to a third world country is excited to learn about Nepalese culture.

Keep centre afloat plea

By Bonny Burrows A community centre born from the devastation of Ash Wednesday is at risk of closure due to a lack of revenue.

In a blow to the hills community, Cockatoo Neighbourhood House has revealed it will close its doors if it doesn’t fund-raise $2000 by 30 June.

The centre, which provides lowcost classes and workshops for people of low socio-economic backgrounds, has failed to run at a profit during the last financial year.

Cockatoo Neighbourhood House co-ordinator Hanny Schoen said at least 80 per cent of its clients were low-income earners, posing the problem of how the centre met financial requirements while attracting clients.

“Because of the low fees, we break even at the end of each financial year,” Ms Schoen said.

“But this year we’re short. We need a minimum of $2000 to break even by 30 June otherwise we close.”

Founded in 1983, the community house was initially a drop-in centre and a provider of after school care.

It has since grown to include dance classes, computer courses, and cooking and craft sessions, to name a few, but its focus has always been on promoting social inclusion and a sense of community.

While the centre has attracted strong numbers and has scraped by financially in previous years, this year’s shortage has left its co-ordinator fearing the worst.

Class prices were raised last year in a bid to increase cash flow; however the higher prices resulted in reduced attendance.

Ms Schoen said previously “extremely popular” cooking classes were now attracting just a handful of people,

In a last attempt, she and assistant co-ordinator Annie White have turned to the general public for donations to get the centre into surplus, but have so far had little luck.

Ms Schoen said the community had been “overwhelmingly supportive”

but the donations weren’t coming as the clientele and the community were cash-strapped.

“We can see it in the support we get, people want us to stay open and not close, they just don’t have the spare money to give,” she said.

“We are a not-for-profit organisation that now needs to find a way to make a profit while keeping class costs down,” she said.

The co-ordinators hate to think what would happen if the centre closed, but said an increase in social isolation was

a real danger.

“It’s really hard; we don’t know what’s happening. It’s scary actually,” Ms Schoen said.

“A neighbourhood house is very important in an isolated area like Cockatoo ... it needs to stay open.”

If the $2000 goal is achieved by the deadline, the centre management has formed a plan to ensure a similar situation doesn’t occur next year.

“We are currently formulating a strategic plan which includes ways to generate income and save money,” Ms White said.

“The appeal for donations is a oneoff request. We really just need to make it through this financial year. We can’t close.”

Battin hit wicket again

By Bonny Burrows Pressure is mounting for Gembrook MP Brad Battin to resign from his shadow emergency services portfolio, after an apology for his parliamentary on career firefighters at Black Saturday fires also proved incorrect.

During the Legislative Assembly’s question time on 10 May, Mr Battin wrongfully stated “when we go back to February 2009, the (emergency services’) minister should be able to tell us how many career firefighters were on the firefighting ground on 7 February for the first 5 1/2 hours of Black Saturday. I can tell the house that it was zero.”

Following the error, Mr Battin apologised for offending career firefighters across the state who did in fact turn out to the 2009 fires. He told the Gazette and other media outlets on 15 May he was only referring to the Bunyip State Ridge Fire but had mistakenly referred to Black Saturday as a whole.

However, this apology has further landed the local MP in hot water, with government and fire services calling him out on the fact that professional firefighters did battle the Bunyip blaze.

The Australian Workers’ Union (AWU) Victorian Secretary Ben Davis on 18 May called for Mr Battin’s immediate sacking, after “systematic smears” against Forest firefighters who fought during one of the state’s darkest times.

“Forest firefighters, many of whom live in his own electorate, were at the Bunyip fire not only on Black Saturday but in the days leading up to it,” Mr Davis said.

“Mr Battin displays his lack of understanding of his portfolio and the challenges faced by all firefighters with his absurd allegations.

“Matthew Guy has run out of excuses - he must show some backbone and sack him."

Mr Battin said he had no plans to step down from his position and would continue to fight for the rights of all firefighters.

Speaking to the Gazette on 19 May, Mr Battin called out the Labor Govern-

ment for its plans to split volunteer and career firefighters into separate fire services in a bid to resolve the ongoing enterprise bargaining agreement dispute.

“Today, the Andrews Labor Government has decided to tear the heart out of the CFA and show the ultimate disrespect to volunteers,” Mr Battin said. “They have not consulted, and they are putting lives at risk.”

Quality of life key at Fernlea From the outside, Fernlea House looks like any other ordinary home nestled in the hills. Inside, things are far from ordinary. In fact, they’re extraordinary.

Caring for people of all ages who are in the palliative stage of an illness, or who have a chronic condition or dementia, Fernlea House is the only respite service of its type in the Dandenong Ranges.

As chief executive officer of Fernlea House, Sue Mclvor explained, the staff and volunteers of Fernlea provide a welcoming and compassionate environment for those faced with the challenges of living with the dying.

“What sets Fernlea apart is the absolute focus on the individual and their changing needs,” Sue said. “Within a home-like setting, Fernlea offers activities tailored to the client’s interests and abilities, a home cooked morning tea and lunch, as well as complementary therapies such as reiki and massage.”

Although Fernlea employs clinical staff, the focus is not on the medical conditions, but on improving the quality of life of its inmates. Away from a medical setting, Fernlea House gives guests back some of the control over their lives they have lost through illness.

“Fernlea gives guests a break from being defined by their illness, as well as giving their carers a break from the often relentless and emotional task of looking after a loved one who is seriously ill,” Sue said.

Fernlea House was opened in 2005 after a long community campaign for accessible palliative care in the hills.

That need has now spread, and Fernlea also offers a centre-based service in Berwick on Fridays, as well as caring for people in their own home through its Fernlea Life Care business. Together, these services enable people with life limiting illness to stay independent and in their own homes for longer.

“Engaging with the community has always been key to Fernlea’s success,” Sue explained. “More than 60 local volunteers give their time to Fernlea each week, driving guests to and from the centres, providing support to guests or working in the op shop - in fact, Fernlea couldn’t do the work it does without its volunteers!”

Guitar hero goes solo

By Peter Douglas Rare guitar talent Justin Bernasconi is returning to the hills to delight local music-lovers, with a special performance at the Skylark Room, Upwey, on Friday 9 June.

After last gracing the region at the Selby Folk Club early last year, Bernasconi will unveil new material from his latest album, ‘Barefoot Wonderland’, released on Friday 19 May. The album is the follow-up to the critically acclaimed ‘Winter Pick’ from 2014.

The recent solo works have been a progression for Bernasconi since he first rose to prominence through his work with The Stillsons, with the band releasing three highly acclaimed albums.

Bernasconi told the ‘Mail’ just last year he felt there were some exciting solo projects ahead.

“The songwriting I was doing probably led me that way,” he said.

“Sometimes you don’t know where the song will lead you, some-

times you’re not in control; my songwriting led me to going solo.

“It has taken a while for the solo show to develop, to get used to not having a band around.”

His influences range across many genres, including folk, bluegrass, ragtime and blues.

But Bernasconi said it always came back to the guitar.

“Guitar is still the love of my life ... I started about age 9, bugging my parents for a guitar,” he said.

He felt his technique had changed slightly since his work with The Stillsons.

“The past three years in particular, I feel like I’ve had more time to practice, to focus in different areas,” he said.

“My love of guitar has never changed, the more, the better - a new practice regime.”

The album opens with ‘Speed Camera’, which is the true story how Bernasconi’s partner was hit by a car while riding her pushbike.

KAGE, a multi-award winning dance company has been selected by Burrinja and Yarra Ranges Council as the successful candidate for their inaugural Creating Tracks Program.

The dance company was founded by Kate Denborough and Gerard Van Dyck and they will be creating a new hour-long work to be performed at three venues across Yarra Ranges in late 2017.

Titled ‘Tonic,’ the work will be a part of the Yarra Ranges annual Culture Tracks program which is now in its fourth year.

The submission by KAGE was selected from a strong field of choreographers, directors and companies vying for the new Creating Tracks opportunity, which provides professional support of up to $22,000 for the creation of the work.

Several judges from the national dance industry made the decision and the assessment panel also included practitioner representatives, as well as key partners.

Executive director of Burrinja, Dr Ross Farnell, said Burrinja was excited by the prospect of KAGE working in the region to develop work that responded specifically to the unique Yarra Ranges area.

“KAGE brings significant experience and originality to the project, collaborating within the region to develop a new work for our cultural venues and our community.

“We can’t wait to see the final performance come alive on our stages,” Mr Farnell said.

KAGE will begin development of the new work in July, and the work will be presented across a week of performances.

Performances will begin in early October at Burrinja in Upwey, The Memo in Healesville, and the Upper Yarra Arts Centre in Warburton.

After the success of her debut novel, ‘In the Quiet’, which she wrote at just 25 years of age, the new novel is sure to resonate with local audiences, given the combination of themes that include trauma, bushfire, loss and recovery.

Henry-Jones has a background and qualifications in psychology and trauma counselling, lived experiences which she has drawn on to craft this novel.

exploration of how a family and a community reconfigures and recovers in the wake of a tragedy.

Henry-Jones has recently completed an honours year in creative writing, exploring bushfire trauma.

The winners in senior football: Olinda Ferny Creek, Monbulk, Mount Evelyn, Upwey-Tecoma, Wandin, Belgrave, Powelltown, Alexandra and Seville.

A Grade Netball winners: Olinda Ferny Creek, Monbulk, Mount Evelyn, Wandin, Belgrave, Alexandra, Yea and - in surprise results - Upwey-Tecoma versus Emerald, and Powelltown versus Kinglake, were draws.

Next week, Healesville take on Woori Yallock in the Valley Dreamtime game, while, in Division 2, the undefeated Yarra Glen make the trip to Belgrave, and Seville and Powelltown will be playing for second spot.

Division 1 Seniors Football Olinda Ferny Creek 14.16(100) d Gembrook-Cockatoo 4.12(36) Gembrook had a tough day at the office, taking on one of the contenders for the premiership and were never really in the hunt from the outset. Gembrook, too their credit, held Olinda to only one goal in the first, but could only manage two behinds themselves.

Olinda kicked 4.5 to 2.1 in the second and got out to a 23-point lead at half-time. They extended that lead to 30-points at three-quarter time but really put their foot down in the last, kicking 5.7 to Gembrook’s three behinds and a big 64-point win.

Monbulk went on the rampage in the second, kicking 11 goals to nil and the lead had blown out to 83-points at half time. Monbulk were on fire and the momentum continued in the third with them kicking eight goals to three and it was now all about Warburton fighting back to make the score not so damaging. Warburton kicked two goals in the last but could not stop Monbulk kicking another six. A big first win for Monbulk and Warburton were left stunned.

Healesville got off to a good start and were very economical in front of goal, kicking 5.1 to 4.4 and had a slim lead of three points at quarter time.

A five-goal-to-three in the second to Healesville would take them into the main break feeling rather confident with their 16-point lead. They certainly were taken by surprise in the third and had no answers to stop the running play of Mount Evelyn in the third. Mount Evelyn dominated the third term, kicking 5.5 and held Healesville to 1.2 and were within one point at three-quarter time. It was game on and the question was asked, “had Mount Evelyn spent all their chances?”. It was a tough 30 minutes of footy as Mount Evelyn had to wait until the final siren until they could breathe a sigh of relief and sing the song when they came home with a two-point win.

Upwey certainly had the momentum and kept the pressure on in the third, kicking three goals to one and their lead had extended to 26 points at the final change. Another impressive eight-goal last quarter and the win was 60 points and a very handy percentage booster.

A one-goal lead was all that separated these two at quarter time and supporters were settling in for a tight game. Wandin got the jump on Woori in the second by kicking 5.4 to 2 straight in the second, and it looked like Wandin were going to run away with the win. Woori Yallock regrouped and got their running game going in the third and kicked 5.3 to 2 straight to reduce the lead to seven points at three-quarter time. The last quarter was tightly contested but Woori could not arrest the momentum back that they needed to weigh Wandin down and could only manage 4.3 to Wandin’s 6.4. This win has Wandin undefeated and they are starting to firm as premiership favourites.

Kinglake started to play the running game that got them to the grand final last year and piled on 7.3 to 2.3 to take control of this game at halftime and a handy 17-point buffer. Powelltown got their second wind in the third and stunned Kinglake by kicking 5.4 to 3.2 and Kinglake now had a game on their hands with only a threepoint lead at three-quarter time. Powelltown were relentless in the last and did not allow Kinglake anywhere near the ball. The final margin was only 10 points in Powelltown’s favour but it has left Kinglake with some work to do if they hope to play finals in 2017.

quarter time. The game was in the balance but Alexandra had the legs in the last to pile on 7.4 to 2 behinds and come away with a win that has set their season up nicely.

Kids are playing great footy MONBULK JUNIOR FOOTBALL CLUB Another fine day of football for the Monbulk Junior Football Club.

UNDER 10s MAROON Up against Wesburn in the fresh air of the Warburton Highway, the boys took another step forward - they were all switched on and staying in position, they moved the ball really well and gained plenty of scoring chances. Again against some older kids, but they tackled and chased hard. Great signs with some good passages of footy.

UNDER 10s GOLD Fantastic effort by the team again - the team work was impressive and the hard-running position was great to watch.

UNDER 14s MAROON A four-quarter effort was what the coaching group was looking for. Up against a stronger team, the contested ball was great and we couldn’t ask any more of our boys. Their ball movement into space resulted in scores. A great effort.

Yarra Ranges Athletics competed at the Knox Little Athletics Club cross country open day on Saturday, an opportunity for the athletes to compete against 15 other athletic clubs at the picturesque Nortons Park.

Up for grabs was the Perpetual Open Day trophy for the champion club.

With courses ranging from 500m to 3kms, and in warm conditions, the club held off some strong competition from Sherbrooke to retain the trophy for the fourth consecutive year.

Congratulations to all the athletes, young and not so young, who competed.

Results will be posted to the club website as soon as they are available.

Next Saturday the club is at Margaret Lewis Reserve, Coldstream from 8.30am.

The seniors will be competing in Round 3 of the XCR17 season at Cruden Farm.

Another fun filled, busy weekend.

Motoring Young gun wins state title

The nationally sanctioned SSA Junior Sedans feature was won by Kasey Garlick from Lilydale. Kasey stamped her authority early in the night in qualifying racing and was just too good in the final winning from Courtney Meakins, Caleb Lincoln, Tyler Barton and Nick Cherry.

Lenny Bates also from the Eastern Suburbs took victory in the Street Stock final ahead of Jamie Lock, Matt Nelson, Colin Tate and David Barrie.

Alexandra returns on the Queen’s Birthday weekend when the 100 Lap Derby for Open Sedans is held.

One hundred competitors from right across Victoria - and possibly from Canberra and other parts of New South Wales - will compete for the prestigious victory along with other major events the Shamrock Cup for Standard Saloons and the Victorian Short Circuit Championship for the SSA Junior Sedans.

Fastest one lap times for the weekend were: Ricky Cornwall in VSC Juniors - 35.786s; Courtney Meakins in SSA Juniors - 36.728s; Tim McPherson in Sports Seedans 33.669s; Lenny Bates in Street Stocks 34.980s; Tim Cole in Crash and Bash 35.039s

Jake Young, from Melbourne’s South Eastern Suburbs, won his first Victorian title when he was able to bump and grind his way through the 30-car starting field and then out-gun everybody else on his way to a Crash and Bash Association title win at Alexandra Speedway.

Young was one of five winners at the recent meet, with Lenny Bates winning Street Stocks, Brendan Miller the Sports Sedans, Ricky Cornwall the Victorian Speedway Council Juniors and Kasey Garlick the Speedway Sedans of Australia Junior Sedan winner.

With 30-plus cars in the Victorian title feature race, a massive crash in the first turn of the dog leg entry with a number of cars jammed up against the concrete wall put out some of the main players, a re-start and a crash on the out section of the dog leg again before any lap had been completed also took out a number of cars. Grant Attewell, Lee Beach, Rod Disher were three strong competitors knocked out before a lap had been run.

Damien Miller was early leader and didn’t look like he would be in trouble or under pressure from his competitors for a number of laps.

Then a flat tyre meant he had to go off track and have the tyre changed and come back into the course to continue.

This happened three times for him.

Young never had to enter the pit enclosure at all over the forty laps, while others had to a number of times.

Young went on to win by a lap over Rob Bushell, Andrew Corlett, Daniel Williams and Beau Evans.

In the Victorian Speedway Council Junior Sedans feature Ricky Cornwall competing in a Sports Sedan with race rubber, was to strong and took victory ahead of the Victorian Junior Standard Saloon champion Adrian Lawrence competing with only four millimetres of tread as per rules he must abide by, Toby Carmichael, Jack Brudenell and Ally Morrison.

Brendan Miller sent a clear message out to entrants in the upcoming 100 Lap Derby when he won the Sports Sedan feature in front of Alexandra local Luke Fallon.

Steve Kershaw form the Eastern Suburbs was third with Tim McPherson and David Donegan rounding out the top five competitors.
