Split draws fire The Victorian Government has vowed to separate volunteer and paid firefighters into two different authorities.

State Emergency Services Minister, James Merlino, announced on Friday 19 May that paid firefighters from the CFA and Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB) would move to the newly created Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV), leaving the CFA to continue as a volunteeronly organisation.

“We’ll enshrine the CFA as a volunteer firefighting service under law and unite our career firefighters under one organisation,” Mr Merlino said.

The new FRV body will be responsible for fighting fires in Melbourne and major regional towns, bringing to-

gether career CFA members and MFB firefighters.

Volunteer CFA stations across the state will be unchanged under the new model, with the 1220 CFA brigades continuing to serve their communities.

The State Government also announced FRV will take over the areas currently covered by integrated stations, and boundaries will be redrawn by a new Fire District Review Panel.

The proposal has been met with criticism from the State Opposition and has divided CFA volunteers.

State Opposition Leader Matthew Guy has called the announcement part of a “political fix” that aims to “destroy the CFA”.

“Victorians still ask that question why? Why is the State Government so

hell-bent on destroying the CFA?” Mr Guy said.

Mr Guy did acknowledge that $56.2 million for training and recruitment and $44 million for new stations is welcome funding for the organisation. “Yes, greater monies for the CFA is good news. Yes, presumptive rights legislation is a good step forward,” he said.

Of the 35 integrated stations that are to be affected by the changes, none are within the Yarra Ranges.

However, chief executive officer of Volunteer Fire Brigades Victoria (VFBV) Andrew Ford said the changes would damage the state’s capacity to provide surge capacity during major events such as the Black Saturday Fires.

The Black Saturday Royal Commission also warned that expanding the MFB boundary would “probably decrease the critical surge capacity of the CFA“.

John Schurink, a Dandenong Ranges CFA member for 34 years, said the proposed changes could result in a mass exodus of volunteers from the integrated fire stations.

He said it would effectively make volunteers at those stations redundant.

“Surge capacity is something that’s vital for our organisation,“ he said.

“Personally, along with my colleagues behind me, we’ve been to Adelaide, Sydney, Wye River, Wangaratta.

“The role of a volunteer, from a separate organisation in the same station, will continue to dwindle, and they

will drift away as there will be nothing for them to do.“ Both Mr Guy and Mr Battin claimed that fire services in NSW which the proposed FRV restructure is modelled on - have less volunteers than Victoria’s CFA. However, annual reports from the CFA show that the organisation has 54,530 volunteers and the Rural Fire Service in NSW has 74,162 volunteers.

Mr Merlino also hit back at the claims from the Opposition, and said that Mr Guy - in relation to the CFA could not be trusted.

“Matthew Guy continues to say anything so he can keep using firefighters as political footballs ... one thing is clear: you can’t trust a single word Matthew Guy says.”

Dreamtime footy hits hills

By Derek Schlennstedt Yarra Valley will host its maiden Dreamtime match between Healesville and Woori Yallock, and will recognise and celebrate Indigenous players and culture.

Fittingly, the local match will take place at the Woori Yallock Football ground on 27 May, the same week as the Sir Doug Nichols ‘Dreamtime at the G’ AFL game.

The traditional custodians of the land will be acknowledged prior to the match to be played under lights.

Many players of local football clubs in the past have been Indigenous, and Aunty Joy, who helped organise the game along with Leisl Morrey, said that this match was recognising those previous football players in the region. “This will be the first time we’ve had this kind of ceremony,� Aunty Joy said. “It could be called a recognition and reunion match, and I think in the Indigenous round it gives respect to those who have laid the foundations across the Yarra valley.� “For younger generations who continue to play, and indeed families from elsewhere, they come here knowing there are roots in the Yarra Valley and that other Indigenous players have played here for a long time.�

The Dreamtime event will be held at the Woori Yallock Football club and include the under-18s, the reserves and also netball games.

The main event will be the seniors match between Healesville and Woori Yallock to kick-off at 7pm.

Healesville Football Club president, Felix Fraraccio, said the club was honoured to be part of the event and looked forward to being involved in it in future years.

“Our club is more than excited to be part of it and our players as well. “I know our club and others embrace it and we hope a lot of people get along to it as it will be a great night,�

Tapping water power

By Kath Gannaway A small, picturesque creek that runs through the Warburton Golf Club is at the heart of the proposed return to a hydro electricity supply in Warburton.

The fast-flowing Ythan Creek is a natural feature of the course which over 80 years ago provided the water energy to power a hydro scheme that provided energy for local street lights and a nearby timber mill.

Warburton Community Hydro (WCH), backed by Upper Yarra Community Enterprise Ltd (UYCEL), the community-owned company that owns and operates the Warburton and Yarra Junction branches of Bendigo Bank, has applied to Yarra Ranges Council for a permit to resurrect the hydro scheme, saying it is an exciting and unique opportunity to invest in a renewable energy project.

The total investment would be around $1million with $500,000 to come from UYCEL and around $450,000 dependent on a successful grant from the State Government’s New Energy and Jobs Fund.

It’s money, however, that Warburton resident Sue Slusarek says could be better spent in a town which, she says, is in need of an economic boost.

Ms Slusarek says there has been no community consultation around the project which will give residents the opportunity to question some of the claims made about the projected energy production and benefit to the wider community, whether other renewables such as solar would provide more benefit, the environmental welfare of the creek and whether the bank’s investment is in line with community expectations.

UYCEL chairman Peter Kimberley, who is also a member of WCH, says however that the project is a separate investment for the bank and should be seen as that.

He said the idea was first mooted in 2011 but changes to the feed-in tarrif quashed the project.

In brief Trailer taken On 19 May at 6.55am, a grey trailer was stolen from the Warburton Golf Course driveway.

Caught on CCTV, a dark coloured Holden Commodore with five spoke wheels is seen unhooking a trailer from a parked car at the golf club and has then driven off with it.

It is described as a gunmetal grey trailer measuring 6 feet in length and 4 feet in width, and police believe that there were at least three people in the car at the time of the incident.

“Renewables is the way of the future and we judge the (Warburton) community to be sympathetic to what you could call environmental issues,” he said.

“If you think about the vision of UYCEL, it’s about building community capacity for a sustainable community, and we think this project fits very neatly.”

Mr Kimberley said the golf club would benefit from use of the power generated, as well as funds from the lease of the land, with power also being fed back into the grid.

He said the project would generate around 800,000 kilowatt hours of power - equivalent of the power required for up to 150 homes, and said the retail

value of the power would be in excess of $200,000 a year.

“It is an investment that will generate a return to shareholders and to the community in the same way our banking profits are distributed.

In terms of other projects in the town, Mr Kimberley said UYCEL had the capacity to do both.

Mr Kimberley said a lot of work had been done to put a proposal together and to get to the point of applying for council permits, and that they had entered into two important partnerships.

River Power Tasmania has built three similar schemes, and negotiations are underway in regard to possibility of the company managing the project.

Another is Powershop, an emerging player in the retail/wholesale renewable energy industry.

Powershop CEO Ed McManus said they were excited to partner with the

Warburton Hydro project.

“We are looking forward to seeing this project get off the ground,” Mr McManus said and added, launching a retail offer to residents of the local area was part of their plan for the project.

A Yarra Ranges Council spokesperson told the Mail their planning department had requested further information in relation to the planning application and are therefore unable to provide details of proposed advertising of the application, community consultation or whether the proposal will be decided at planning level, or be decided at a full council meeting.

Ms Slusarek in the meantime has launched a Facebook page ‘Real Investment in Warburton’ calling for input into what local residents want in Warburton.

A male driver was lucky to escape uninjured after his van flipped on the Healesville-Kooweerup Road on Tuesday 16 May. His van veered into oncoming traffic, before clipping an approaching vehicle and rolling.

The crash occurred about 5pm, just before Albert Road, and the driver, a Healesville resident who lives near the scene of the accident, emerged from the crash shaken.

The road was later closed after Healesville Fire Brigade and SES attended the scene.

Investigation into the incident is ongoing, and police are making inquiries.

However, Senior Constable at Mooroolbark police, Christopher Moloney, said fatigue might have been a factor.

“It’s a long straight section of the road, so not an area where you would expect a collision to occur,” he said.

“There’s also good visibility, so it does appear it may be fatigue-related.”

Sen Const Moloney said the crash could have been worse.

“It wasn’t quite a head-on, but it was only centimetres away,” he said.

Sen Const Moloney reminded drivers, if they’re feeling tired, to stop and pull over.

Kind helpers raise a grand total for move-ability Twenty-two children with a disability in third-world countries will gain a level of mobility, thanks to the students of Yarra Junction Primary School and the Rotary Club of Wandin.

The students raised $4473.15 through a wheelchairathon held at the school on Friday, 28 April.

School chaplain Ed Eadon said the whole school community was excited to be part of an event which would make such a difference.

Wheelchair for Kids is a Rotary Club Australia project supported by Wandin Rotary.

Having spent more than half my life in Queensland, my footy code is League and I love watching the NRL. A couple of weeks ago, the NRL celebrated its annual Indigenous round.

Some of the statistics that came out of that were surprising.

That is, only 3 per cent of our nation’s population are Indigenous however Indigenous players make up 16 per cent of the NRL and 20 per cent of the State of Origin players.

This, of course, is to be expected when you consider that the cradle of Rugby League is far north-Queensland.

Great coaches like Jack Gibson and Wayne Bennet have nurtured and encouraged Indigenous players for years, while there is none better than Cowboys captain Jonathon ‘JT’ Thurston.

A great memory from my childhood is watching Lionel Morgan running around with the Wynnum Manly team in the Brisbane League.

Indigenous sports men and women have, and continue to, do us proud.

Time to move When will local, state or national government get off their butts and do something about the Maroondah Highway between Coldstream and Healesville?

How many people need to die or suffer critical injuries before something is done?

The Yarra Valley attracts an enormous number of tourists, particularly on the weekends (but also through the week)

where local traffic and tourist traffic literally collide.

I have only lived in Healesville for four years but travel back and forth between Healesville and Lilydale.

Almost daily, there are near misses caused by frustrated tradies or residents coping with tourists who want to travel anywhere between 20km/h and 40km/h under the limit on a mostly 100km/h highway.

At the very least, there should be double the number of overtaking lanes (preferable a double highway) and signage that makes it clear to tourists that when they pull out in front of traffic, that traffic is travelling at least 100km/h.

Something needs to be done before more deaths or casualties occur.

Whatever happened to the money collected as petrol excise that was intended to go to road improvements?

Healing the Spirit

A collaboration that aims to put people with a disability into the workforce is kicking goals.

Growing Together in Horticulture (GTiH) draws its inspiration and grass-roots experience from Bernie Sullivan who was a team leader and instructor for many years working with people with a disability in a community nursery in the Yarra Valley.

Bernie’s vision is to provide the training and opportunity for people to gain a qualification and paid work, and to provide businesses and government bodies with a skilled and trained workforce.

The work includes horticulture, parks and gardens and some landscaping, tapping into the industries that thrive in the Yarra Valley such as orchards, vineyards, flower growers, nurseries, and environmental projects through government instrumentalities.

With Apprentice Groups Australia (AGA) and Eastern Access Community Health (EACH) on board, along with TAFE, all the training and support elements of the vision are well in place.

Bernie said disability can cover a wide range of perceived limitations from mental health issues to physical impediments.

“As long as they can do the work, the door is wide open to give someone the opportunity to show their real worth instead of crushing them,” he said.

A solid plank of GTiH is that the work is charged out at award rates, addressing a situation Bernie says is a flaw in many systems which provide funding to hire people with a disability.

Two events in the Yarra Valley will mark Reconciliation Week 2017.

Aboriginal health, connection to culture and land management practices will be discussed by a series of speakers at the Yarra Ranges Reconciliation Week event in Healesville on Thursday, 1 June, and Yarra Valley ECOSS will host a Reconciliation Day event in Wesburn on Sunday, 28 May. “We’ve been around for 30 years and do the right thing including all entitlements and relevant training,” he said.

“We charge out at award rates and we comply to industry standards ... everything is done by the book.”

Consistency of work is the big challenge for GTiH and both Bernie and Ray say they are extremely pleased with the connections they are forging, including with Yarra Ranges Council and other bodies but would like to see more State Government funding put into projects they can tender for.

The satisfaction is mutual.

Yarra Ranges mayor Noel Cliff said the council is proud of its work with GTiH and Mr Sullivan, and has

an ongoing commitment to work with the group and its members where possible.

The GTiH group has delivered over $10,000 of maintenance activities at Birdsland and other sites including weed control, amenity whipper snippering and mulching over the past 12 months with other programs currently running and potential programs to be confirmed.

GTiH is now speaking with other councils and government bodies, and Bernie and Ray say the potential to grow the organisation is limited only by the work they can provide to their people.

Flow sweeps river clean

There's something fishy about the amount of water flowing down the Yarra and Watts rivers over the coming weeks ... and it’s called the Australian grayling.

Melbourne Water has started releasing millions of litres of water from the Upper Yarra and Maroondah reservoirs with the great flow starting on Thursday, 18 May and expected to continue until 15 June.

Apart from the spectacle such a release creates, the primary purpose of the release is to support juvenile Australian grayling migration and spawning.

Cheryl Edwards, Environmental Water Resources, Melbourne Water said the release was important for the success of the species which spawn in the freshwater reaches of the system before the eggs and larvae drift out to sea.

Macquarie perch also spawn in places where the river flows quickly over a pebble bed, and these locations tend to get clogged with silt during the year.

“The flow from environmental water releases enables the spawning grounds to be cleaned up in preparation for spawning and a steady stream flow allows the eggs to remain stable in the spawning grounds,” Ms Edwards said.

Other species expected to benefit from increased environmental flows include regionally significant river blackfish and the platypus.

River levels can be expected to rise up to 90cm in the Yarra and up to 120cm in the Watts River through Healesville during the release and are within the normal natural variation of these rivers.

In Millgrove, peak flows in the Yarra River will be up to 600 megalitres a day for seven days from 27 May to 4 June.

A total of 400 people gathered at the summit of Mt Donna Buang on Saturday,13 May, to create a giant human sign spelling out support for the proposed Great Forest National Park.

The human sign measured over 60 metres long and 50 metres wide and spelled out the word, ‘We love parks,’ with the word love in the symbol of a love heart.

Hundreds of Warburton residents made the trek up the mountain to take part, and the Victorian National Parks Association organised people into their respective groups and letters.

“People were allocated to be either part of the heart or part of a letter as soon as they arrived,” president of the Warburton Environment Group, Karina Doughty, said.

“Friends of Leadbeater’s Possum, Warburton habitat group, Healesville groups and Toolangi groups, and many individuals came together to support the need for the creation of the Great Forest National Park.”

The Great Forest National Park proposes a new 355,000 hectares of protected forests to the existing 170,000 hectares of parks and protected areas in the Central Highlands of Victoria.

The Central Highlands region of Victoria is located around towns such as Healesville, Kinglake, Toolangi, Warburton, Marysville and Woods Point, and this region includes the vast majority of remaining (and declining) leadbeater’s possums.

“The Andrew’s Government is running out of time to give Victorians a clear commitment that it will create a new Great Forest National Park.“ Karina Doughty said the day had an incredible atmosphere, and was

amazed at the number of passionate people who came out to support the creation of the Great Forest National Park.

“It was really exciting for us to see how many passionate people made the effort to come up the mountain and be outdoors and be in our national parks,” Ms Doughty said.

“It was a really great atmosphere.”

Great time for cancer cure

By Kath Gannaway Carmel Pignataro has been a passionate supporter and advocate for the Cancer Council for many years through her involvement with Mont De Lancey’s Greatest Morning Tea. But in November 2015, this advocacy was made all too personal when a devastating cancer diagnosis for her husband, Mick, sparked her own journey in supporting those searching for a cure.

Mick grew up in Wandin and was an integral part of Wandin community not only through business, but also through the lifelong bonds and friendships he developed over the years.

Enduring six months of continuous chemotherapy and two surgeries, Mick showed incredible determination and strength for his family, but tragically lost his battle at the age of 47, leaving behind his heartbroken wife and three devoted sons.

Through her own grief, Carmel realised the urgency in raising awareness and fund-raising for organisations like the Cancer Council, to help fund vital research, support services, prevention programs and a cure.

Organisers of Mont De Lancey’s Greatest Morning Tea event, Alison Jones (Sebire) and Natalie Pye have been a great support to

Mick, Carmel and their family.

“For me to be able to help with this event, in Wandin ... I really feel like I’m doing it for Mick,” Carmel said.

Carmel said baking and just being part of such a positive event had been a good experience and urged people to support the morning tea on Thursday, 25 May. The Biggest Morning Tea will be held at Mont De Lancey Historic Homestead from 9am to 11.30am, and will include a delicious morning tea, raffles, a guest speaker and a guided tour. REGIONAL TOWNS ARE AFFORDABLE FIRST STEP WHILE housing affordability remains a hot topic in Melbourne, new REIV data shows buyers are able to get a foothold on the property ladder in multiple regional towns for less than $250,000.

The REIV’s March figures show the state’s most affordable towns are located in regional Victoria with many areas boasting house prices well below the statewide median of $377,000.

In the year to March, the Latrobe Valley in Gippsland dominated the most affordable list with three towns recording median house prices below $200,000.

Moe and nearby Morwell recorded the state’s lowest median house prices at $165,000 and $170,000 respectively.

Despite its affordability, Morwell has experienced double-digit price

growth in the past year.

Churchill in south-east Victoria was also at the affordable end of the market with a median house price of $186,500 while buyers on a budget may also want to consider Maryborough, north of Ballarat, where the median house price is currently $190,500.

Red Cliffs and Stawell were also among the state’s most affordable towns with median house prices of $203,500 and $210,000 respectively.

Both towns recorded capital growth over the year, with house prices in Red Cliffs up 4.4 per cent while Stawell’s median house price rose 14.4 per cent.

Myrtleford, between Wangaratta and Bright, is another affordable option for homebuyers with a median house price of $218,750.

Other towns making the most affordable list include Newborough ($230,000), Kyabram ($232,500) and Horsham (235,000).

Meanwhile, Mildura in northwest Victoria had the state’s highest number of sales with more than 575 transactions in the year to March.

This was followed by Traralgon and Warragul with 380 and 291 sales respectively.

High turnover of homes was also recorded in Ocean Grove (262 sales), Drouin (252 sales), Ballarat Central (251 sales) and Highton (231 sales).

The winners in senior football: Olinda Ferny Creek, Monbulk, Mount Evelyn, Upwey-Tecoma, Wandin, Belgrave, Powelltown, Alexandra and Seville.

A Grade Netball winners: Olinda Ferny Creek, Monbulk, Mount Evelyn, Wandin, Belgrave, Alexandra, Yea and - in surprise results - Upwey-Tecoma versus Emerald, and Powelltown versus Kinglake, were draws.

Next week, Healesville take on Woori Yallock in the Valley Dreamtime game, while, in Division 2, the undefeated Yarra Glen make the trip to Belgrave, and Seville and Powelltown will be playing for second spot.

Division 1 Seniors Football Olinda Ferny Creek 14.16(100) d Gembrook-Cockatoo 4.12(36) Gembrook had a tough day at the office, taking on one of the contenders for the premiership and were never really in the hunt from the outset. Gembrook, too their credit, held Olinda to only one goal in the first, but could only manage two behinds themselves.

Olinda kicked 4.5 to 2.1 in the second and got out to a 23-point lead at half-time. They extended that lead to 30-points at three-quarter time but really put their foot down in the last, kicking 5.7 to Gembrook’s three behinds and a big 64-point win.

Monbulk got off to a good start but were inaccurate in front of goal and the margin could have been more than 15-points at quarter time.

Monbulk went on the rampage in the second, kicking 11 goals to nil and the lead had blown out to 83-points at half time. Monbulk were on fire and the momentum continued in the third with them kicking eight goals to three and it was now all about Warburton fighting back to make the score not so damaging. Warburton kicked two goals in the last but could not stop Monbulk kicking another six. A big first win for Monbulk and Warburton were left stunned.

Healesville got off to a good start and were very economical in front of goal, kicking 5.1 to 4.4 and had a slim lead of three points at quarter time.

A five-goal-to-three in the second to Healesville would take them into the main break feeling rather confident with their 16-point lead. They certainly were taken by surprise in the third and had no answers to stop the running play of Mount Evelyn in the third. Mount Evelyn dominated the third term, kicking 5.5 and held Healesville to 1.2 and were within one point at three-quarter time. It was game on and the question was asked, “had Mount Evelyn spent all their chances?”. It was a tough 30 minutes of footy as Mount Evelyn had to wait until the final siren until they could breathe a sigh of relief and sing the song when they came home with a two-point win.

Upwey completely turned it around in the second kicking 8.5 to 2.2 and the lead was now in Upwey’s favour by 12 points. Upwey certainly had the momentum and kept the pressure on in the third, kicking three goals to one and their lead had extended to 26 points at the final change. Another impressive eight-goal last quarter and the win was 60 points and a very handy percentage booster.

A one-goal lead was all that separated these two at quarter time and supporters were settling in for a tight game. Wandin got the jump on Woori in the second by kicking 5.4 to 2 straight in the second, and it looked like Wandin were going to run away with the win. Woori Yallock regrouped and got their running game going in the third and kicked 5.3 to 2 straight to reduce the lead to seven points at three-quarter time. The last quarter was tightly contested but Woori could not arrest the momentum back that they needed to weigh Wandin down and could only manage 4.3 to Wandin’s 6.4. This win has Wandin undefeated and they are starting to firm as premiership favourites.

Powelltown took the early lead with a five-goal-to-three first quarter and a 13-point lead. Kinglake started to play the running game that got them to the grand final last year and piled on 7.3 to 2.3 to take control of this game at halftime and a handy 17-point buffer. Powelltown got their second wind in the third and stunned Kinglake by kicking 5.4 to 3.2 and Kinglake now had a game on their hands with only a threepoint lead at three-quarter time. Powelltown were relentless in the last and did not allow Kinglake anywhere near the ball. The final margin was only 10 points in Powelltown’s favour but it has left Kinglake with some work to do if they hope to play finals in 2017.

quarter time. The game was in the balance but Alexandra had the legs in the last to pile on 7.4 to 2 behinds and come away with a win that has set their season up nicely.

The third was much of the same as Seville did not take the foot off the pedal and kicked 8.6 to Yea’s five goals. The entire game was a bit of a goal feast bit Seville were the hungriest and kicked another 5.7 in the last to come away with a 104-point win.

Alan, Sam and Steuart share classic win WARBURTON GOLF WEDNESDAY A Three Person Ambrose and the Johnson/Hyndman Classic was played. The holding of this very popular event for the 10th time saw a win to one of the hosts - Alan Johnson partnered Sam Patrick and perennial winner Steuart Hawke to win with an impressive nett score of 56.67. Not far behind were Ian Garside, Paul Long and Mike Dobson, with 57.33. The NTPs were snared by Kevin Conway 3rd, Allan Hubbard 5th, CHB 9th and to

Steuart Hawke 12th.

The committee, on behalf of the members, want to greatly thank Alan and Noel for sponsoring this unique and popular event. Now that it has survived a decade of competition, we all look forward to the next decade.

SATURDAY A Stableford event and the Peter Bartlett trophy was played.

This time-honoured board event was won by Jason Kennedy with 38 ‘strong’ points. This is a fitting result, as Jason’s dad, P.K. (im-

mediate past Captain), was a great golfing mate of both Peter Bartlett Senior and Junior. Jason also won A Grade on the day to boot. B Grade went to Geoffrey Ireson, in a welcome return to form. Geoff accumulated 40 grand points for the best score on the day. New member, John Wheatley, was runner-up with 37 points. If you scored 34 points, or better, you can claim a ball. The daily NTP winners were Butch 3rd, Willo 5th and 12th, Geoff Fall 9th and to Mr Sunderland (Andy Lockey) on the tough 15th.

Prodigal son returns

As part of this season’s 50 Year Anniversary Celebrations for the WarburtonMillgrove Football Netball Club (1967-2016), the third Reunion Function - for the 1987-1996 decade - will be held at the home ground, the Mac Sparke Oval, on Saturday 3 June.

The club will be playing Emerald.

All past players, officials and members from that decade are invited to the Burras Supporters’ Club Function at half-time of the senior football game.

Guest Speakers will be former club president and 1995 premiership captain, Rohan Hubbard, and reserves premiership coach, Ian Hancock.

The club looks forward to another enjoyable get together as part of their 50 Year Reunion Celebrations.

YARRA GLEN BOWLS Mathew O’Brien has accepted a contract as playing coach for Yarra Glen Bowls Club.

Mathew - or ‘Twisties’ as he is fondly known as in the bowling community - started playing with the club at the ripe age of 11 and his career is illustrious with many state and club titles to his name.

He has represented Victoria in the Under 18 sides and has achieved many singles and team titles for the state, region, club and individual competitions.

“I’m very excited to be back with Yarra Glen as the club has special memories for me, to be able to give back to a club that has supported me for so many years and has many great friends will be challenging and rewarding all at the same time,” he said.

President Peter Nelson and his committee have been working hard to re-establish the club and identify Mathew’s appointment as the first step in the process.

Mathew recently had a short stint away from the club to better his bowls but has now returned to share his knowledge and will lead the club onto great things over the next two years.

Rallying to the cause

Bradley and Paul have raised more than $7000, which Paul said would not have been possible without the amazing support of the Healesville community.

“We have had to raise a minimum amount of money for the Cancer Council, but with everybody’s generous support we have almost doubled that.

“A huge thank you to everyone who has donated, spread the word, got interested and involved with

what we are doing, and why we are doing it,” Paul said.

“The experience has been very humbling, and incredibly motivating to meet so many wonderful people along the way.”

The Shitbox Rally will begin on Saturday 28 May and the pair’s trials and tribulations can be followed on their Facebook page Bradandadshitbox Rally 2017.

They will be travelling with a tracker so they can be followed at www.shitbox.westoznet.com.

Healesville father and son Paul and Bradley Van De Ven are getting ready to drive their $350 Ford Falcon wagon across Australia.

The pair will leave at 5am on Thursday 25 May and will travel with other participants to Adelaide for the start of the Shitbox Rally.

“We’ll travel across to Adelaide in a convoy with half of the other Victorian teams,” Paul said.

“That way we can look after each other on the trip.

“It’s an eight hour drive so, fingers crossed, we all make it there safely, especially because we have a long way to go after Adelaide.”

The Ford Falcon has been dedicated to the memory of Healesville resident and close friend of Paul’s, Bryce Crow, who passed away in 2014 from melanoma.

To pay tribute, the car has a sticker of Bryce and the words ‘cruising for Crowy’ along the side.
