The year 2016 was the 150th anniversary of the commencement of St Patrick’s School on its current site - a significant milestone which makes St Patrick’s one of the earliest schools in this area. Principal Mick O’Brien said St Patrick’s provided an atmosphere that gave each child a sense of selfworth and provided encouragement, in a secure environment. “I believe that children learn best when they are happy - when the learning is relevant to their lives and to their stage of development and readiness. They learn when there are good relationships among those involved in the learning process. This will obviously include parents as the primary educators of their children. “The education programme provided by teachers must take account
of the individual needs of each child and build independent, empowered learners who are risk takers and deep thinkers. Explicit teaching and support of each child must target specific needs for each individual. “Thus an explicit, coherent, sequential plan for curriculum delivery will be enabled, where teachers have an understanding of the continuum of learning and where each child sits on that continuum. “Differentiation will be a requisite part of each teacher’s documentation and planning. Learning experiences for all children must be engaging and meaningful and students need to be able to articulate clearly the intention of what it is they are learning and how they will know that they have achieved this."

At St Paul’s Anglican Grammar School, learning is about more than just what takes place in the classroom. St Paul’s has pastoral care structures so that each child is well known and can develop meaningful relationships with adults and other students. Utilising ‘Trust Mapping’, an online survey mapping tool that identifies students who are not feeling connected in Years 3 to 9 and also Smartabase, an online wellness software used in Year 8; St Paul’s takes a proactive approach in regard to so-
cial and emotional issues that typically arise in adolescence, and identifies where appropriate support may be required. Year 7 students take part in an extended transition program during Year 6 that includes meeting senior staff in enrolment interviews, receiving individual primary school visits from the head of Year 7, friendship morning in July to meet future peers, and a three-day orientation program in December. In term one, students attend a camp run by peer support leaders who guide, mediate, support
and encourage students, helping them to have a confident start at secondary school. Currently over 90 students travel to St Paul’s from the Cardinia Shire on two St Paul’s buses. Is bullying an inevitable part of school life? The potential for bullying is certainly always present in schools because of inherent power differences when children of different size and strength are put in the same place. Pete Wells, principal at the Pakenham campus of Chairo Christian School, said: “Kids are still developing social and cognitive skills, and don’t always have the maturity to cope with the stresses that exist in a community, or to self-regulate behaviour that can be impulsive, selfish or mean. “But all these factors don’t mean that a school should settle for anything less than a well-functioning community where everyone feels safe, valued and able to develop to their potential.” Mr Wells is himself the father of three boys. “Any of us who are parents know that we don’t have to teach our children to misbehave! Those motivations are already within the child. “Instead, we have to work hard to ensure that our children learn to
speak kindly and politely, to share with others, to show courage and compassion, and to resist the urge to lash out.” The foundations for character development, positive relationships and productive learning at Chairo are defined by the school’s Code of Respect, which requires students to agree to respect others, themselves, authority and property, together with respecting the privilege to teach and learn, and respecting Chairo and its Christian foundations. “I won’t say that bullying never happens in a community of several hundred children,” Mr Wells said. “However, it is not something that is regular or persistent. It gets dealt with. “Our caring staff members are committed to the Code of Respect. Lakeside College is thrilled with the commencement of a new extension to the junior school. This project, jointly funded under the State Government Capital Grants Program, assists schools in high growth areas to provide much-needed infrastructure. The project is managed by Brand Architects, highly regarded for its educational de-
sign, and will be constructed by local firm King Built. The development will meet the growing needs of the community, providing seven new classrooms, a central collaborative space and multiple break out spaces. These additional learning areas will allow the college to accommodate the growth of a second class of students from Prep to Year 5.
Lakeside offers single year level classes that allow students the best opportunity to achieve their potential. An emphasis on pastoral care and partnership with families is at the heart of the college’s educational philosophy. Kinder fund-raising gets a welcome boost By Helena Adeloju Pakenham Heights Kindergarten has received a welcome boost to its playground restoration fundraising efforts. Barry Plant Real Estate agent Terri Fellows presented a giant cheque for $500 to the kindergarten on Friday 28 April. “I just want to do whatever I can to help the Pakenham community because these children are our future,” Ms Fellows said. The donation comes after Car-
dinia council notified the kindergarten earlier this year that much of the original playground equipment was no longer safe. The 40-year-old wooden playground is currently cordoned off until enough money can be raised to restore or replace it. The old play equipment has been used by hundreds of children over the past four decades with little or no maintainence. Pakenham Heights Kindergarten fundraising committee member Emma Spoard, whose son Thomas
attends the kindergarten, said the existing wooden equipment needs to be repaired. The fort and hill area of the playground, which was a much loved site for the kids’ games, is currently out of bounds because of splintered wood and protruding nails. “The children love the fort, it’s definitely a favourite for them,” she said. Ms Spoard said the fort and the hill area will be an instant hit with the kids when enough money has
been raised to complete the work. For now the kids are making do with playing on the slides and monkey bars. Ms Spoard said the playground project relies on donations and fundraising. “We are incredibly grateful for Ms Fellows’ generous donation,” she said. Residents of an unsealed section of Beaconsfield’s Rix Road are fed up with the road’s condition; however council says it has identified no concerns with the pavement. Rix Road residents Marilyn Brown and Shareen Mollenhauer are sick to death of having to “fourwheel-drive it” out their own driveways while works are underway at the neighbouring Beaconsfield Roses Estate. For the last 12 months since Ms Mollenhauer moved in, coinciding with the development’s works, the neighbours say they have battled pot holes, drainage issues and uneven road surfaces and have witnessed “a number” of construction trucks getting bogged in the mud. The pair have contacted Cardinia Shire Council multiple times requesting Rix Road west of Brunt Road to be sealed, but are unsatisfied with the “Band-Aid solutions” and its delayed response. “We want something done with the road, not this sub-par grading,” Ms Brown said. “Ideally, we’d like the road sealed and the drains dug out to get the water flowing again, but it’s very hard to get answers from council.” Ms Mollenhauer said the pooled water as a result of the “poor drainage”, posed a health risk to her young children. “It’s a health hazard, it’s not good and attracts the mossies,” Ms Mollenhauer said. “I don’t want my kids playing on the street with stagnant water.” The residents argued council had a responsibility to ensure the road was fixed, but its failure to act left them feeling like the “poor end” of Rix Road. “We pay rates just like anyone else, yet we don’t get any services. We’re always forgotten about,” Ms Brown said. “We’d probably be better not getting council’s help, but doing it (the road upgrade) ourselves. It would probably be quicker.” Cardinia Shire Council’s co-ordinator of operations, Mark Howard said the unsealed road was “proactively inspected” in accordance with council’s road management plan. It had been graded as recently as last week, he said, following a resident inquiry. “An inspection of the unsealed section of Rix Road was completed last Friday 12 May, which identified no concerns with the pavement surface,” Mr Howard said. “However, minor issues with the open drains were identified and works to rectify these issues will be completed by the end of June. “Additionally, the section of Rix Road to the west of the Brunt Road intersection is currently being upgraded by the developer as part of the development of Beaconsfield Roses Estate.”

Vet warns against toxic garden treat By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Berwick vet has called on dog owners to ward their dogs from feeding on toxic mushrooms and toadstools. Jeremy Jones says he’s treated several local dogs for severe vomiting and diarrhoea after eating toxic fungi in recent years. “Last year we had a situation in which two dogs from the same household ate fungi, which had popped up in the
grass between mows. “They became so ill with such severe vomiting and diarrhoea that they needed hospitalisation, strong pain relief and intensive monitoring. “I feared one might die but with prompt treatment a full recovery was made.” Mr Jones said the danger season is in April, May and June. Already this year, he’s treated several minor poisoning cases at his clinic, The Berwick Village Vet.
Each day, dog owners should scour their yards for mushrooms and toadstools and dispose of the fruitbodies safely, he said. Most of the patients are puppies and young dogs, with those most at risk having dietary indiscretions. Other cases have been dogs with large appetites or where two or more dogs through competitive instincts are “driven” to eat more of a toxin despite its unpalatability.
A magistrate has pondered how to protect a Narre Warren woman from a man who texted a barrage of sexually-derogative abuse and had apparently stalked her at her own home. The 24-year-old man, of no fixed abode, had been blocked on Facebook and her phone by the mother of their two children. She has since moved to an undisclosed address, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard on 8 May. On 3 March, the accused made 40 phone calls and sent 14 abusive texts calling her a “c***”, “sl**” and “piece of s***”. The next day, he fired off further abuse, after a male friend visited her house. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen rebuked the man’s lawyer for “blaming” a picture of the partner “dressed provocatively” on Facebook. “So it’s about victim blaming?” Mr Vandersteen said. “It’s about what she’s wearing? “We’re back down to that, are we?” The man - being blocked on Facebook - claimed a friend showed him the Facebook post. It seemed to be a type of stalking, Mr Vandersteen said. The man apparently knew
more about what happened in the house than what was posted on Facebook, the judge said. The man’s lawyer said the accused was a “fantastic father” and a “hard worker”. Mr Vandersteen retorted: “Why is he behaving like a twoyear-old?" “His children (watching) in court are better behaved than he is.” At 2.15am on 23 April, the court heard, the accused began thumping on the home window’s roller-shutters and calling out the partner’s name, as well as repeatedly driving past the house. He’d called 80 times and left 27 voice-mails before his interception and arrest by police at 4am. At the time he was driving while suspended, and his Holden Commodore was unregistered. He was caught two more times driving while suspended this year, showing a “sense of entitlement” and “non-compliance”, Mr Vandersteen said. The lawyer played down the man’s brief period of using ice four years ago. “If you’re saying there’s no drug or mental health issues, what is it behind this behaviour?” Mr Vandersteen said. “Something is not quite right.”
The man had a record of drug, assault and weapons charges in Queensland, as well as being subject to five family violence orders. Mr Vandersteen, in noting the man’s abusive words reflected the man’s thoughts, pondered: “How does a court deal with that risk?” The accused man addressed Mr Vandersteen from the dock. The partner had said she wanted to be a family while she was seeing other people, the man claimed. He said he just wanted to know whether to continue the relationship or not. Mr Vandersteen challenged the man on how he’d respond if the man’s daughter was later spoken to in the same alleged way. “I didn’t make it comfortable for you,” he told the accused. “I can’t risk you thinking I’m agreeing with you by being silent. That’s the risk with family violence.” The accused was put on a 18-month community corrections order including judicial monitoring, drug assessment and mental health treatment. He was banned from any contact with his ex-partner and children, except through a family lawyer.

Jail for ‘rage’ attack By Cam Lucadou-Wells A man has smashed the inside of a car windscreen with his fist, then punched his pregnant girlfriend in the face and stomach after being enraged during a call with Narre Warren police, a court has heard. Soon after his violence on 27 January, Jeremy Arvidson, 23, allegedly told the victim he hated her so much he felt like killing her. Arvidson was sentenced at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 15 May for assault and threats to kill his partner as well as for stabbing a Dandenong man in the stomach. He pleaded guilty to the charges as well as stealing a car from a Pakenham
mechanic’s garage in February. The car was found abandoned at Fountain Gate shopping centre on 21 February; Arvidson’s DNA was swabbed from an empty Red Bull can on the car’s floor. Arvidson, who had been recently living in Doveton, Dandenong and Melbourne’s west, was also charged with handling a stolen go-kart, a stolen motorbike and a stolen mechanic’s electronic diagnostic tool in Hallam while on bail in October. At the time of the first attack, he had been sitting with his girlfriend in a car at VicRoads’ office, Dandenong. Police had just hung up on Arvidson after he swore and got angry when told he couldn’t register his girlfriend’s sus-
pectedly-stolen vehicle. In a police interview, he said he’d kicked the car’s windscreen out of frustration and told the victim to “f*** off”. He denied ever hitting her but claimed her black-eye occurred when he pushed her over “hard” at home during an argument on 31 January. On 8 February, Arvidson accused a man of harbouring his former girlfriend in the man’s Dandenong unit. During an argument outside the unit, he stabbed the man in the stomach with a three-inch pocket-knife. As Arvidson ran away, he yelled: “If you call the cops I’ll kill your family and everyone you know.” He later denied to police that he
stabbed the victim, who suffered a threecentimetre gash to his abdomen. “If I would have stabbed him I would have done a better job,” Arvidson allegedly said. “I wouldn’t have stabbed him, I would have shot him.” Arvidson, who appeared in court via a custody video link, accepted magistrate Barry Schultz’s sentence indication of 18 months’ jail with 12 months nonparole. At the accused’s request, Mr Schultz didn’t deduct the pre-sentence detention term. It is being “kept” for an upcoming County Court prosecution against Arvidson.

Business with purpose delivers meals on the move By Victoria Stone-Meadows Pakenham based Khan’s Hospitality Services has teamed up with the Cranbourne Food Truck to give the most vulnerable community members in Melbourne’s south-east a hot meal. Khan’s Hospitality is providing the Cranbourne Food Truck with a prepared meal to serve from the truck on a weekly basis. Khan’s Hospitality Services owner
Adam Sadiqzai said the business providing food for the most vulnerable in the Cranbourne community is part of his business ethos. “I first became aware of the food truck through local media and it sparked interest,” Mr Sadiqzai said. “I liked they were helping the local community, particularly in Cranbourne, which is an area that really needs a bit of help and support.” “It fits in with my business philoso-
phy of having business with a purpose and we have been doing things like this for a long time, helping a lot of groups in Casey and Cardinia.” Khan’s cooks meals for the food truck using fresh ingredients that than get be given to those in the community looking for a hot meal and place to go. The Cranbourne Food Truck’s client base has grown over the last few months where they attract between 250 and 300 people a month.
Chris Marsh from the Cranbourne Food Truck said the food donations from Khan’s has been a great help in keeping the truck up and running. “It has been a really good relationship and it has helped us in a sticky moment when our cooks are away on holiday,” she said. “Because the truck is all volunteers, it can be hard to find people to slot in; it’s not like a workplace where you can cover shifts so this has been a godsend.”

Sour note to pay dispute By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Melbourne-wide fruit and florist business, with stores in Fountain Gate, Parkmore and Dandenong shopping centres, are set to face court over allegedly underpaying two workers a combined total of more than $130,000. A & S Wholesale Fruit and Vegetables, as well as its director Stephen Fanous and operations manager Etherah Louli, are also accused of providing false records to the Fair Work Ombudsman. The FWO alleges that A & S underpaid a manager $114,977 over nearly three years at its Chirnside Shopping Centre store. The manager, from a nonEnglish speaking background, was underpaid for his entire 130 hours of work per fortnight, including $10 cash in hand per hour for his overtime. A florist was also allegedly underpaid for her work at the business’s Fountain Gate, Parkmore and Dandenong stores. The FWO stated it was unable to calculate the underpayments for a 17-year-old worker due to the business’s “non-compliant record-keeping”. Fair Work Ombudsman Natalie James said toll records from work vehicles were used to calculate the manager’s work schedules and alleged underpayments. “We take matters very seriously when we come across examples of employers falsifying records or failing to keep required records which compromise our ability to determine a worker’s entitlements. “We know that younger workers and workers from migrant backgrounds can be more vulnerable in the workplace as they are often reluctant to make complaints and may not be aware of their rights.” The matter is listed for a directions hearing in the Federal Circuit Court, Melbourne on 3 August. The FWO seeks penalties against the company, Mr Fanous and Ms Louli, as well as rectification of nearly $133,000 of underpaid wages. A & S Wholesale Fruit and Vegetables was in the news in October 2015 denying claims of a former manager of “appalling” food safety and hygiene standards at its Fountain Gate outlet. At the time, the business claimed its hygiene was given the all-clear by a subsequent City of Casey inspection. Star News has attempted to make contact with A & S Wholesale.

By Victoria Stone-Meadows Five individuals and three community groups have had their hard work recognised at the 2017 City of Casey Volunteer Awards on Friday 12 May. Roman Nowak from Cannons Creek took out the coveted Casey individual volunteer of the year award for the many and varied volunteer roles he undertakes in the municipality. Mr Nowak, 65, is an independent person with the Youth Referral Program who helps young people who have been taken into police custody when a parent or guardian may not be available. He has attended 69 call outs to police stations throughout Casey to support young, vulnerable people who otherwise may have had nobody. Mr Nowak is also second in charge of the Cranbourne Salvation Army where he has volunteered for 22 years and co-ordinates relief efforts to help the most vulnerable members of the community. His volunteer efforts extend into other areas as well; having been a member of the Devon Meadows CFA for almost 20 years, a member of Langwarrin Landcare and a town support worker helping people with tasks such as budgeting in the local area. Mr Nowak said he wasn’t expect-

Libraries plan a bright future By Victoria Stone-Meadows Casey Cardinia Libraries (CCL) will be undergoing a drastic change in the next four years if the 2017-'21 Library Plan is approved by the community. CCL will officially unveil the draft plan at Pakenham library on Wednesday 17 May with CCL chairwoman Cardinia councillor Jodie Owen. The draft plan details the libraries' ambitions in upgrading IT equipment, renewing the furniture and refreshing the feel of libraries, and creating new and better learning and activity spaces. CCL CEO Chris Buckingham said that the much-needed upgrades to the libraries will bring them into the 21st century. “We have a clear mission to encourage lifelong learning, increase literacy and build strong resilient communities across the Casey Cardinia region,” he said. “We want our libraries to be places where people can share stories, gather knowledge and be creative.” “All our surveys told us that the community love our libraries, but we have a lot of work to do to ensure that they meet the needs of a rapidly growing community.” The Library Plan is available on www.cclc. vic.gov.au and physical copies are on display in all CCL branches. Berwick breast cancer survivor Debbie Brettoner recently hosted her third awareness luncheon since being diagnosed in 2014. The 5 May luncheon underlined the
importance of early detection tests. “We hope every person who attends tells 10 people about the crucial importance of getting check ups, so it has a ripple effect throughout our community,” said Paris Brown, a work colleague of Ms Brettoner at Harcourts Berwick.
As a result of Ms Brettoner’s efforts, at least two women were prompted to take the test and received crucial early diagnoses of breast cancer. The event at Shanikas Pakenham held a fund-raising silent auction supported by a range of local businesses.

Casey Council is tight-lipped on the ongoing cost of managing a Cranbourne former landfill nearly a decade after high levels of methane leaked into homes at Brookland Greens estate. On 16 May, the council approved tenders for the continued post-management of its Stevensons Road landfill for at least another three years. The contract costs were kept secret under commercial-in-confidence provisions. Following the decision, a Casey spokesman declined to give a global figure of the debacle’s cost, including the legal settlement, an extensive three-year landfill gas soil clean-up and ongoing monitoring. The spokesman said a figure was unable to be released due to commercial-in-confidence contracts and funding coming from government sources. The council and the Environment Protection Authority Victoria settled a $23.5 million class action with more than 750 residents in Brookland Greens in 2011. At the time, the council expressed confidence it would recover much of its $13.5 million contribution from nine other defendants, including the landfill’s managers and
technical experts who had provided advice. Residents collected up to $130,000 from the settlement, seeking damages after gas from the adjoining closed tip was detected in the estate in 2008. In the subsequent emergency incident, alarmed residents were evacuated from their homes. Nine homes are still monitored inside by methane-detection monitors that were installed in September 2008. According to a council report, the landfill post-monitoring will largely continue at the same levels as 2010 though the in-home monitoring exercise was considered “redundant”. A contract with Run Energy for in-home monitoring would continue on a month-by-month basis. The landfill post-closure monitoring and groundwater testing contracts with Run Energy and Ecowise Australia will run for three years, followed by three options of one year. The council also agreed to wind down its professional indemnity insurance coverage of Run Energy from $20 million to $10,000. According to the council report, this will save $87,525 over the next three years.

State Budget is cordially welcomed. As a leader in providing sector-wide professional development on topics such as trauma, Kinders Together also welcomes the additional investment in coaching, training and mentoring for educators in the State Budget. However, there is no use in greatly improving the supports and interventions available at kindergarten if access to kindergarten for all children regardless of background is not maintained. What use are excellent kindergarten facilities, educators and support services if the number of kindergarten hours is reduced. The Victorian State Government has done their bit in committing to ensuring a strong future for our children and families over the long-term, it is time the Federal Government did the same. In the 2017 Federal Budget, the National Partnership Agreement on Universal Access to Early Childhood Education (NPA) has only been extended for another 12 months. The lack of certainty and stability over ongoing funding for the sector will continue unless a long-term commitment is made regarding this. The Victorian State Government has committed to providing long-term ongoing funding for the kindergarten sector to improve infrastructure, support and raise the capacity of workers in the sector which will benefit all children once they are at kindergarten, but much of the positive impacts of this will be undermined if there is reduced access/hours to kindergarten. The Federal Government needs to step up and commit to long-term funding under the NPA. The announcement of the 2017 Victorian State Budget is a welcome acknowledgement of the importance of early childhood education and care to not just children but also their wider communities. However, this is only a starting point, so much more needs to be done before we can claim we are a so-called ‘Education State’ and the Commonwealth has a role to play in this as well. The announcement of in the 2017 Federal Budget of the extension of the NPA for another year is welcome, but not good enough, a longer-term commitment is required. Furthermore, 15 hours of funded kindergarten in the year before commence school is only the bare minimum, many countries provide substantially more hours and for more years prior to the commencement of school. To really be seen as an ‘Education State’ we need to be leading the way with this, to truly be seen as an innovative and agile nation we need to secure greater kindergarten access for all. The motorcyclist was airlifted to The Alfred hospital and as of Tuesday 16 May, remained in a critical condition at The Alfred suffering from serious head injuries. Old-fashioned way works Angela and I celebrate our 60th anniversary on 8 June, 2017. We arrived at Station Pier with our three children on April 2, 1968, from Morecambe in north-west England, and were put on a bus and taken to a migrant hostel in Broadmeadows. We had nothing; only the suitcases we carried and had to start again from scratch at the hostel. I got told to visit the employment office in Glenroy for a job interview (I am still waiting) and after only four days I got a job in a stone quarry in Epping. It was very long hours, six days a week and six hours on a Sunday doing maintenance on the camp. I only got one meal a week because the canteen was closed when I went to work and closed when I got back. We stayed on the camp for nine months and then we got out and rented a house. In March 1974 we moved to Hampton park and still live in the house 43 years now. In February 1997 I had to retire from work due to a work injury that never got treated and later had to have a hip replacement so that was the end of my working days at the age of 61. I am proud to say my wife and I never got any handouts from anybody. We both worked hard for what we own. We have five grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren spread out around the country. D. At home for good health Federal Health Minister and Flinders MP Greg Hunt paid a visit to Berwick on Monday 15 May where a 12-month trial of the government’s new opt-in Health Care Home program is set to begin. Mr Hunt visited the Casey Superclinic in Berwick with La Trobe MP Jason Wood to announce that the clinic will be one of the first 20 of 200 clinics across the country to trial the new program. Along with Emerald Medical Centre, the Casey Superclinic will be a trial for the new system of care from October. The remaining 180 clinics that will run the trial will be offering comprehensive health care co-ordination from 1 December. The program aims to ensure patients suffering from longterm chronic illnesses have a comprehensive and cohesive access to ongoing consolidated healthcare. The trial will see doctors, nurses and community health
care providers working together under a shared care plan that will give the patient a complete overview of their treatments and needs. The drive behind the initiative will see local clinics and medical centres transformed into ‘home bases’ that will coordinate the care and needs of patients with ongoing needs. A Health Care Home clinic will receive a monthly bundled payment to the clinic to allow flexibility in the type of treatment patients with chronic illnesses need on a changing basis while still allowing patients to access Medicare coverage for treatments outside their plan. Mr Wood said the program will allow GPs and other health professionals to target health care for patients to get the best out of the new healthcare model. “Patients of GP clinics in Berwick and Emerald will be eligible to take part in the program which will see their GP develop a plan which co-ordinates support from other medical specialists and nurses,” he said.
Health Minister Mr Hunt said the program will reduce the overall cost of healthcare to the government by improving patient outcomes over the long term. “This trial is an Australian first and although I will be guided by our GPs and those patients taking part, I am hopeful that the program is a success and we will continue to roll it out,” he said. The Health Care Home Program will be funded by a $110 million commitment by the government in the 2017-18 Federal Budget. Other medical centres and clinics in the south-east region that will be part of the wider trial beginning in December include The Chandler Road Medical Clinic in Noble Park, Hallam Family Practice, Lakeside Square Medical Centre in Pakenham, Lynbrook Village Medical Centre, Thompson Road Clinic in Cranbourne and the Hampton Park branch of the first Health Medical Centre.

The Dandenong Divisional Response Unit executed a search warrant on the morning of Tuesday 9 May in Clarendon Street, Cranbourne. Police said they seized methyl amphetamines, prohibited weapons, and stolen property from the premises but called in special help to remove the large snake. The wildlife resource and protection and management team from the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning were responsible for removing the reptile. A 28-year-old man from Cranbourne has been interviewed by police and has been released pending further inquiries.

As part of Spinal Health Week 2017 (22-28 May), local chiropractors are raising awareness of chronic back pain and encouraging Australians to seek help. Spinal Health Week is a health initiative of the Chiropractors’ Association of Australia and as part of this year’s campaign, Dr Renee O’Connor from True Potential Chiropractic is encouraging Pakenham residents to seek help for chronic back pain. Chronic back pain is a national issue. One in six Australians suffer from the physical and psychological effects of chronic back problems - that’s an estimated 3.7 million people suffering. “The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare defines chronic back pain as a health condition that lasts for three months or longer,� Dr Renee O’Connor said. A sedentary lifestyle and poor posture are risk factors for chronic back pain. Originally from South Africa, Dr Naidu obtained his primary medical degree from The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. He returned to South Africa and worked in the public, private and academic environment for 20 years before migrating to New Zealand in 2002. In New Zealand, Dr Naidu worked in various medical roles. These included in general practice, accident and medical emergency, mental health and occupational medicine.
Currently, he is the senior medical advisor for The Accident Compensation Corporation and Medical Advisor for Air New Zealand. He is highly qualified and obtained his Fellowship (specialist GP) from The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners and The Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners. Additionally, he obtained his Post Graduate Diploma in Medical Science (Occupational Medicine) from The University of Auckland. He also holds a Masters’ in Business Leadership from The University of
South Africa. His main interests include all aspects of general medicine, orthopaedic injuries, mental illness and chronic pain. He is an experienced occupational medicine practitioner, assessing fitness and return to work following illness and injury and rehabilitation. What is driving prices up in real estate? BEACONSFIELD
The answer is simply! “Demand.” There is an under supply of land into the market currently which is denying new home owners the opportunity to build their first, second or third home. This is forcing them to look to the established market to buy instead. As a result, we are seeing land prices push up and prices being achieved in the established market also push up at a rapid rate. Only about 18 months ago, the average numbers of buyers attending most open for inspections was only 2 to 5 people. A well-advertised open for inspection in Pakenham today can attract upwards of 40 to 50 buyers, which will often yield 5 to 10 offers. With this many buyers competing for properties, we are seeing prices well above expectations being achieved. It would not be unreasonable to suggest the market value of homes in the under $400,000 bracket has jumped by between 10% and 20% in the last 12 months alone. This is now flowing through into the higher price brackets as the demand also increases at this level and the under supply of houses and land to the market continues. With the council forecasting the population of Pakenham is set to increase by about 80% over the 20 years, developers are going to be kept very busy trying to get enough land releases ready to keep up with demand. Time for tough love Great businesses are forged during tough times. That’s the opinion of Star News Group Business Excellence Seminar guest speaker and national business commentator Damian Morgan. Mr Morgan will exchange ideas with some of Cardinia, Casey and Greater Dandenong business leaders during a series of free seminars he will be holding across the region in June. He will host seminars in Dandenong on Tuesday 20 June, in Pakenham on Thursday 22 June, and in Narre Warren on Friday 23 June. While he has a positive attitude to business success during economic slumps, Mr Morgan isn’t afraid to be blunt when giving advice. “The truth is there are some boom-time businesses that will only work in a boom,” he said. “Great businesses that are well planned and developed are sustainable - they can thrive in any conditions.” Mr Morgan is a former creative writer and busi-
ness journalist with an MBA, and is also a regular media commentator. He has a passion for helping small and medium-sized businesses grow. “I am a small business owner myself,” he said. “My great passion is helping small businesses beat corporate - we are generally better.” One pitfall for many small business owners was a lack of self-promotion, Mr Morgan said. “So many small businesses are very good at what they do, but they don’t make the profit they should make because, in many cases, they don’t promote themselves well,” he said. “It’s one of the things corporate (businesses) do really well. Ayden pumped By Victoria Stone-Meadows A young man from Cranbourne West had his hard work and dedication to his craft recognised at the 2017 Master Builders Association of Victoria Apprentice of the Year awards. Ayden Horyna was named Roof Tiling and Slating Apprentice of the Year at the awards ceremony at Etihad Stadium in Docklands on Friday 12 May. As part of being awarded the title, Mr Horyna also received almost $2000 with of tools, vouchers and workwear. Mr Horyna was one of 12 apprentices from across the state to receive an award and be named the best apprentice in their field of work and study. Master Builders Association of Victoria president Melanie Fasham said all apprentices were a valuable asset to the country and deserved to have their achievements recognised. “One of the best investments Victoria can make is in the training and skills of young people in the building and construction industry,” she said. “When we prepare them, we prepare Victoria for the generations ahead and the communities that will rely on them.” “Tonight’s group of award recipients reflect the continuing importance of apprenticeships as the critical and enduring pathway for skills in the Victorian building industry.” The awards ceremony was attended by about 1000 people and saw the best and brightest of Victoria’s future tradespeople honoured for their hard work. Master Builders CEO Radley de Silva said all the winners faced tough competition and the talent of young apprentices shone brighter every year. “It’s edifying to see this pool of building talent among our Victorian apprentices every year,” he said. “Ours is the fastest-growing state, and these are the builders who will serve our communities in the years to come. The challenge, as always, is selecting just one winner.”

Sweet success for Jackson A Berwick baker has risen to the top of Coles’ apprentice bakers in Australia. Jackson Taylor won the category as well as $1000 in the supermarket’s inaugural bakery awards after starting the apprentice program in January. He and other finalists had a cook-off across a range of sweet and savoury foods - as well as serving up their own unique treat. The creations were judged on appearance, texture, aroma and taste. Jackson cooked up a lamington jam scroll based on it being a big hit with his colleagues at Coles Parkhill Junction store. “I began the apprenticeship earlier this year because I’m a hands-on person and have enjoyed working in the bakery and learning from the other bakers,” he said. “It was a great feeling to be nominated and to be named a finalist shows that I’m on the right track in the early stages of my apprenticeship.” Store manager David Visser praised Jackson’s teamwork and passion for his craft. “The wacky lamington scrolls were a team favourite and we’re all so excited for him.” Meanwhile, Samantha Shores, of the Casey Central store, was recognised as Coles’ best trade qualified baker in the state. She cooked up a Nutella pull-apart during the finals.

of the Cranbourne community for 20 years, offering a space for themselves since 1997. Now with over 200 members, the club enjoys boisterous get-togethers as well as organised outings and trips. Clyde North resident Sam Grant has been awarded the highest volunteer honour available to Camp Quality volunteers after four and half years helping children with cancer. Mr Grant has received the Victorian Dick Gillard award for his tireless efforts in improving the life of children suffering from cancer. Mr Grant became involved with Camp Quality after he took an early retirement package and wanted to help out people who needed some extra care. “I took an early retirement package and I’m not a good golfer and I thought I had seen something on the TV about Camp Quality,” he said. “I wanted to put something back into the community again and the bond between volunteers is amazing; everyone is a winner, the volunteers are great, the kids are great, the families are great.” He said the unfiltered joy children express when they have a chance to forget about their illness is what keeps him going with his volunteer duties. “It has become a real passion seeing the joy and fun upon kid’s faces when we go away or at the family camps,” he said. “I’ve been lucky enough to never experience the fear of possibly losing a child so to take families and allow them to interact with each and the appreciation of what Camp Quality does.” Fund-raising specialist for Camp Quality Victorian Jo McKeown said no-one was more deserving of the award than Mr Grant. “From being an amazing companion, who does incredible work with kids on camps, to bringing a shining light into the office, Sam is an all-round brilliant person who celebrates life and appreciates every moment,” she said. Perfect score for Warriors By Russell Bennett The Pakenham Warriors’ Big V basketball teams made it a perfect five from five across the weekend as their senior men’s, youth league men’s, and youth league women’s teams won each of their games in a perfect weekend for the club. Brent Russell’s men’s side backed up their 93-85 win at home over the Altona Gators on Saturday with an 8680 triumph away to Wallan on Sunday. Big man Brad Bridgewater was simply outstanding across both games, with 28 points and 13 boards on nearly 80 per cent shooting on Saturday, followed by 25 points on 83 per cent shooting, 14 boards, and 2 blocks on the Sunday. “It was our first double-header for the season and our focus during the week was recovery in between each game to make sure we were as best we could be leading into second game of the weekend, which was the game of the round,” Russell said. “Altona came out on fire and have shown why they have been on a winning streak over the last few rounds. “We just had a lot of Thursday’s training slip into this game - lazy passes, silly turnovers, ball watching, and
no communication, so I think it was a good wake-up call and something we will definitely be touching on this week at training.” But the Warriors pulled through when it counted in overtime, with some more spectacular highlight plays from Bridgewater - including a spectacular alley-oop to force the overtime period in the first place. “The local support and crowd that night was huge, and again the boys fed off that so a big thank you to the crowd for their support,” Russell said. On Mother’s Day, the senior side headed to Wallan for a top-of-the-table clash. The Warriors expected the home side to come out firing, but perhaps not as emphatically as what transpired - 28 points in the first quarter and 53 for the first half while holding the Warriors to just 35. “The half-time message was don’t stop, keep pushing - our run will come,” Russell said, saying disciplined defence and strong communication were also huge determining factors in turning the game around. “The fight in the guys to come back after being down 20 points at one stage early in the third shows how much
heart they have. “Not once did they give up and they pushed each other over the line and walked away for the win. “Our goal was 2-0 for the weekend and to walk away after the weekend and go 2-0 was a great outcome for us.” The Warriors youth league men were even more emphatic in their two crushing wins - by 41 points over Chelsea on Saturday - 104-63, and 42 over Wallan on Sunday - 89-47. Tobie Dean led the way on Saturday with 20 points, with 17 apiece from Lee Belton and Tom Greer, while point guard Matt D’Arcy - fresh from his stint in the US - returned for a special appearance before heading in for shoulder surgery. On the Sunday, Aidan Jenkinson led the way with 17 points, 5 boards, and 3 assists as the Warriors forced Wallan into 37 turnovers. Simo Pajdic’s men now sit on top of the table with a 10-2 record. Aiming for a remarkable sixth consecutive victory in the AFL Victoria Community Championships, coach Michael ‘Jock’ Holland and his side ran head first into a full strength Bottle Green outfit led by former Brisbane champion Jonathan Brown. The Demons looked outclassed at times, but rode brilliant performances from Michael Collins in the midfield, Michael Riseley down back, and a virtuoso five-goal effort from Andrew Dean to take a well-earned nine-point lead into three quarter time. But Hampden packed too many punches in the final term, the Demons feeling the effects of limited interchange rotations after the loss of gut-runner Lucas Jellyman-Turner and under-sized ruckman Troy Tharle. It’s no stuck in the mud By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring Range Rover Sport SVR is one of hardest accelerating 4WDs on the planet. Its 405 kW 5.0-litre supercharged V8 has it screaming from zero to 100 km/h in just 4.7 seconds. This is a genuine off-road vehicle that can handle harsh conditions that would have many so-called competitors stuck within the first few metres. For example, wheel travel remains identical to the standard Sport, with 260mm at the front and 272 mm at the rear. Wading depth continues to be to ‘real’ off-road standards 850mm. So we’ve just spent a week in real world road testing of an SVR, that is boring motorways, clogged peak hour traffic, shopping centre carparks and so on. Range Rover Sport SVR makes a strong visual statement, including a new front bumper with trapezoidal air intakes. There’s dark Range Rover script on the clamshell bonnet, which has revised vents. Its new grille has a dark finish that contrasts with the headlights’ graphics. And all-new aluminium fender panels incorporate a new design of vents while unique side mouldings add further muscularity. At the rear there’s a high-level
spoiler with a central brake light. The revised rear bumper features a gloss black diffuser and houses the SVR’s quad exhaust pipes. Inside, the Sport’s sport seats are finished in luxurious Windsor leather with ribbed, quilted centres, Ebony Black top stitching, eye-catching reflective piping, and all feature the Range Rover Sport SVR logo. Range Rover Sport SVR uses an evolution of the company’s all-aluminium 5.0-litre supercharged V8 engine. It has cast-iron cylinder liners and cross-bolted main bearing caps among other features often found in ultra-high performance engines. Larger air intakes in the front bumper increase airflow to the two chargeair coolers. This reduces the temperature of pressurised air generated by the supercharger before it enters the engine thus producing high performance even in extreme conditions. The eight-speed ZF 8HP70 automatic transmission has been optimised and now receives additional torque in its lower gears. We fell in love with ‘our’ Range Rover Sport SVR, not only because of the virtually instant acceleration provided by a supercharged engine no turbo lag here - but also because it sounds the part. The SVR has a two-stage active
exhaust featuring electronically controlled valves. A racecar-like soundtrack produces a purposeful, modulated pulsing at lighter throttle openings combined with a higher-frequency, staccato sound as you approach peak performance. Yet it’s not so loud as to upset the neighbours. In country driving on our favourite test roads we experienced the delights of Range Rover’s Corner Recognition technology. steering input and maintains one gear through a bend to provide stability that could have been hampered by unnecessary ratio changes. It recognises that the bend has straightened and that the driver may then want to accelerate hard. Clever stuff. Torque Vectoring by Braking is recalibrated over that of the standard Rangie Sport and provides more extreme handling when desired, balancing the distribution of engine torque between the four wheels to reduce any
understeer that might try to spoil the fun. Active-Roll Control (ARC) replaces traditional anti-roll bars and uses actuators powered by a hydraulic pump to reduce body roll, adapting up to 1000 times a second. It’s tuned to behave specifically for the Sport SVR during performance driving. Cleverly, it automatically reverts to the same software map as other Range Rover Sport derivatives once it senses it’s no longer doing track work. During testing and development, the SVR recorded a Nordschleife (Nurburgring) lap time of just 8 minutes 14 seconds, a ridiculously fast time for a production SUV. Fuel consumption? Despite my fears voiced at the end of my January news story on the SVR’s accelerative performance it wasn’t as high as anticipated. Around town it was usually in the nine to 11 litres per 100 kilometres range. When squirted on the open road in twisting hilly roads it got to the mid to high teens. Efficiency of high-performance engines means they use fuel remarkably well. On motorway running with the eight-speed automatic transmission keeping the engine ticking over at about 1200 to 1500 revs it sipped around seven litres petrol each 100 km. Brilliant.
